QB or not QB; LB won’t play for UH

The Rainbow Warriors are mulling whether to add a quarterback transfer to the training-camp roster.

The potential transfer appears to fit the criteria: He’s skilled and he would have to redshirt this year. In HR-speak, the former quality is a minimum requirement, the latter is a preferred requirement. The Warriors are seeking a quarterback to run the scout offense against the No. 1 defense in practices this fall.

The Warriors have four quarterbacks on the roster. None is considered a scout quarterback. Taylor Graham will enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback. Sean Schroeder, who started 11 games in 2012, is expected to be fully healed from April 1 back surgery by the start of training camp. Jeremy Higgins, who started last year, had an impressive spring. The coaches have praised Ikaika Woolsey, who redshirted in 2012 and grayshirted the year before that.

Keenan Ewaliko, who was a quarterback at Baldwin High, is now a receiver. He is not a candidate for scout quarterback because he is expected to compete for playing time as a receiver and on special teams.

A player transferring between FBS schools usually is required to redshirt a year before being eligible to play for the second school. But a transfer may practice — and the Warriors need a scout QB.

It appears that former Texas A&M linebacker Darzil Washington will not play for the Warriors this year. Washington signed with the Warriors in February.

Washington began his NCAA career at Texas A&M in 2011. He redshirted that year, then transferred to Eastern Arizona.

OK, I’ve been on vacation the past week (spending most of my blog time shoveling spam), so I’ve been off my game. It’s time for a do-over, so:

Happy, happy belated birthday wishes to:

Washington apparently has been AWOL from a lot of the things he was supposed to be doing.

  5. Old School Dave July 14, 2013 8:09 am

Too bad about Washington. Does this free up a scholarship for a transfer or a promising walk-on?

    Happy Birthday BIK and hoohiki!

  16. Moocher July 14, 2013 8:51 am

i think ESPN should have a classified section….

    like……

“Wanted…scout team QB for Hawaii. Must be willing to redshirt one year and must be highly competitive to grow within our system with potential to be a starting QB”

would this be within recruiting bounds? might be easier to recruit 🙂

    NOT A SPORTS ISSUE:

If you have basic carpentry skills and would like to have a free four-panel shoji screen which needs to have the paper replaced again – thanks to our cats – please contact me. The first time we repaired it, we had it done professionally for just under $300. Within three days, we had to pull the cats off it so we bought the paper on-line and did it ourselves.

The cats did it again so we decided no more fix-it. It’s not that difficult, but I don’t want to reward the cats anymore.

If you’d like more information, then send an email to swood at bokudotcom and be sure to include a daytime phone number along with your (real) name as well as your blog name

If I don’t hear from anyone by the end of the week, we’ll donate the screen plus the paper to Goodwill.

SPORTS ISSUE: Will the Tsaikos have an information table at next Saturday’s FOOD AND SPORTS EXPO for season ticket holders at Aloha Stadium? If not, then maybe we should all wear our t-shirts.

    ST:

your statement for Washington, “he will not play for the Warriors this season” – underlying message is that he will eventually join in 2014?

  33. tommui July 14, 2013 11:37 am

Michelle Wie = minus 15 for the tournament. Not top 10 but hopefully this may be a turning point for a better future.

  34. kapakahi July 14, 2013 12:39 pm

JMHO but woulda been nice to have a QB with extensive FBS starting and playing experience on the roster…..like Andrew Manley.

  35. ai-eee-soos July 14, 2013 12:46 pm

… but … Andrew Manley did/does NOT want to be a Warrior.

    He had his chances.

The last one recently occurred when he got his release to return home, due to a family situation.

He wound up at E. ILL. – yeah, real close to home.

  44. lava July 14, 2013 7:30 pm

More than any of else, players know when a player gets a raw deal. The poor treatment of Graves isn’t lost on anyone. It doesn’t really make anyone want to commit to Chow.

  45. Moocher July 14, 2013 7:53 pm

    if i recall correctly…….

graves was the #1 qb going into chow’s first season….and chow gave him his licks.

if anyone can say something factual let’s hear it.

if you drove automatic and next day your boss told you to drive a stick…either you learn it or look for something else you can do…like say be a mechanic. but keep in mind, if you want to be a mechanic, then you need to know just as much as and be at least as good as the other mechanics. there just may not be time for a learning curve or ojt. and if those other mechanics are “union” (or on scholarship) it’s an uphill battle for sure.

thats how i see DG’s unfortunate situation. unless DG himself says otherwise, i’m not going to speculate on the worst.

  49. Warrior Dave July 14, 2013 9:33 pm

    #66 Al,

Are you talking about the QB ST mentioned above? That’s too bad if it is. I think we need help on but sides of the ball to get the boys ready for the upcoming season.

  50. Warrior Dave July 14, 2013 9:38 pm

    #62 Moocher & Others,

DG may have been #1 going into Spring of Chows 1st year but he was not #1 after the Fall.

Chow chose the QB he wanted to run his offense for as long as he did. Like I said prior, I feel for the holdover players but it was Chows decision who played and he will suffer the consequences if he has a similar year to last.

Needs to at least show major improvement.

  51. al July 14, 2013 9:43 pm

    67. warrior dave…that s a false “al” at 66.

  52. Warrior Dave July 14, 2013 9:52 pm

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2013 9:59 pm

which recruit we talking about here? the QB? or Washington?

  55. Moocher July 14, 2013 10:33 pm

the good thing with last year is that chow will make changes this year. last year, how can you can make changes when so many parts of the engine aren’t working right.

you can see the difference now in recruiting with what chow needs and what he had. now we have a big line, big receivers, a QB with a big arm and speedy versatile powerful backs….i’d say this year a lot of wins or losses will ride with the D.

i think we will see an O that can power up when it needs to, and finesse it’s way in tight situations.

    my concern is the D

but hey…yes on paper it looks much better….but the turf will tell the truth
