By Stephen Tsai on July 13, 2013

Levi Wilson, a slotback/returner from College of San Mateo, had planned to play for Wisconsin this year. But Wilson did not meet that school’s requirements. He then applied, on his own, at UH — and was accepted. There still are  eligibility hurdles to clear, but if all goes well, Wilson might be joining the Rainbow Warriors this summer. Here are his highlights: Wilson video * * * * * Happy birthday to Myki.

Graves’ situation

By Stephen Tsai on July 12, 2013

David Graves admittedly did not have a good year in 2012. He entered 2012 spring training as the No. 1 quarterback. But after preparing three years in an offense that no longer existed, he struggled to adjust to the pro-set schemes. Four months later, at the end of training camp, he was a wide receiver. Graves rarely played and, after the 2012 season, he was rarely seen on the Lower Campus. His “whatever-happened to …” story is a short one. […]

“Samurai Mike”

By Stephen Tsai on July 11, 2013

The Warrior Beat was wandering around the Manoa campus this morning, minding other people’s business, and there was one of the greatest linebackers in football history — Mike Singletary. OK, everybody sing along: I’m Samurai Mike, I stop ’em cold Part of the defense, big and bold I’ve been jammin’ for quite a while Doin’ what’s right and settin’ the style Give me a chance I’ll rock you good Nobody messin’ in my neighborhood I didn’t come here lookin’ for […]

Mol has a contact reach of 11 feet, 4 inches on spikes. Mol also is one of the top beach volleyball players in Europe. * * * * * Belated congratulations to Ka Ulukoa 17s on winning the USVA Boys’ Junior Volleyball championship. Delay route for JC receiver

By Stephen Tsai on July 9, 2013

Terrance Polk, a wide receiver from Los Medanos Junior College, told the Warrior Beat he will delay enrolling at UH until January. He said he needs to complete work on an associate degree before transferring. Polk committed to UH in November 2012, then signed a letter of intent this past February. He was expected to compete as a receiver and returner. In 2012, his yards-per-catch average of 22.1 yards ranked second among California community college receivers. Thirteen of his 49 […]

The next phase

By Stephen Tsai on July 8, 2013

Four times a week the past couple of months, Ruben Guzman would work on position drills for two hours. After that, he would do conditioning drills. In the evening, he would go to the gym, sometimes spending up to three hours on various strength and cardio exercises. Guzman is a punter. UH kicker Tyler Hadden “told me we have a new strength coach (Gary Beemer), and he’s very strict,” Guzman said. “I didn’t want to be that one guy trying […]

Weight watchers

By Stephen Tsai on July 7, 2013

For offensive tackle Leo Koloamatangi and defensive lineman Marcus Malepeai, hard work can be measured on a scale. Each has been tasked to add weight and strength while maintaining agility. Koloamatangi now weighs 290 pounds. Malepeai is about 285. Those are significant changes for both. Koloamatangi Koloamatangi said he was 236 pounds when he joined the Rainbow Warriors in August 2012. He redshirted last year. Koloamatangi was rotating as a No. 1 tackle when he suffered ligament injuries in his right […]

Guiding lights

By Stephen Tsai on July 6, 2013

Since January, linebacker Art Laurel has been working to rehab a surgically repaired left shoulder. The past several weeks, Laurel also has been helping youth mend their lives. Laurel and defensive tackle Saui Matagiese are volunteers at Palama Settlement as part of their curriculum as family resource majors. “The kids we work with are mandated by the court to be there,” Matagiese said. “There are a bunch of kids with rough backgrounds. They all have POs. They have to check […]
