Snap decisions

With training camp opening in 16 days, the Rainbow Warriors still are awaiting confirmation of long-snapper Brian Hittner’s eligibility.

Hittner was supposed to join the Warriors for the 2012 season, but there was a glitch in calculating his transferrable credits. He also did not participate in this past spring ball.

Hittner has the edge because of his experience (a year of long-snapping at Saddleback College).

Freshman long-snapper Tyler Liana and JR Colton will compete, but their reporting dates have not been finalized.

If the Warriors stay in house, then safety Kawika Borden, defensive end Beau Yap and offensive lineman Kody Afusia are options. Borden handled most of the long-snapping duties during the spring, but he also is in the rotation at safety. UH would prefer that Yap and Afusia focus on their full-time jobs.

The Warriors have been spoiled because the Ingram brothers — Jake and Luke — were full-time snappers the past eight years.

Watched slotback Levi Wilson’s video last night. He was running away from people. His stats claim a 4.36 sec. 40 yd. dash. He’s quick, but are his stats legit?

    Woo Hoo….Top 15…

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!!

  12. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2013 9:19 am

San Mateo is a very good football program.

For some reason, there always are glitches when it comes to transferrable credits between San Mateo and UH. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a universal curriculum for all community colleges.

  13. NotNasti July 15, 2013 9:22 am

If Levi Wilson was accepted into UH, how is it that he is not eligible? The transferrable credits you were talking about? This means he was not an NCAA qualifier out of high school? This also means he has earned an associate’s degree from San Mateo?

  14. Old School Dave July 15, 2013 9:36 am

Hope Levi Wilson can work out these issues with the NCAA and can be on the roster when they open camp in a few weeks. Shows some initiative on his part to apply and to be accepted by UH. Wilson, based on his videos, could be a game-breaker, impact player for UH.

  23. jimmy the lock July 15, 2013 10:38 am

There were a couple of other Warrior Beat blogs titled “Snap decision”. Must be a popular title. Technically this one has an “s” but close enough.

  24. jimmy the lock July 15, 2013 10:46 am

Maybe your comments imbibe too much?

  25. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2013 10:55 am

actually, it appears that one bad apple is spoiling it for a lot of us. the lives some people lead are so pitiful.

  26. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2013 10:59 am

    1 year is an era?

And where would the money for that dispersion come from if you cut the sports that generated the ticket and TV revenue that you want dispersed to the academic programs?-_-

  27. Moocher July 15, 2013 11:07 am

i think what’s worse then the chow era of one season is when a person says they are a “warriorfan808” and talk about cutting football…..yeah buddy, a true warrior fan you are. i bet you like licking chicken grease.

  28. jimmy the lock July 15, 2013 11:07 am

What happens to the women’s sport programs if you cut football?

  29. Jesse(James) July 15, 2013 11:09 am

#28…plus, the elimination of football would eliminate the need for many of the scholies under Title IX….just saying…

With training camp 16 days away, it feels almost too soon, knowing that the new strength and conditioning coach feels our players, as a group, graded out lower than he expected. That sent up red flags. Makes you wonder if they will at their best come opening day against USC.

  44. LizKauai July 15, 2013 12:10 pm

if a trooper went AWOL and reports for duty on deployment date, he is immediately shuffled off to the MPs for confinement to be dealt with later – higher HQ must be notified of situation – however, they will also deploy with us and thus the “stud” is in a bind and will have to deal with the “Post Commander’s” office

  56. Derek July 15, 2013 12:56 pm

One of USC’s football players is Sua Cravens, a CB or safety. His older brother Siaki Cravens was a Warrior. Too bad be couldn’t land him but after we beat them maybe he made the wrong decision.

    It’s a turnaround year.

  57. Da Punchbowl Kid July 15, 2013 12:58 pm

No worry, mo. 51 is the new 50! 😉

  58. d1shima July 15, 2013 1:03 pm

    Top 59!

  59. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2013 1:25 pm

Warriors’ first practice is the first Friday in August. Rookies report first; then veterans.

  60. Bowwar July 15, 2013 1:27 pm

Lets hope the Warriors can keep the game with USC competitive…If so, then that bodes well for the entire season. However, if we get handed out “lunch” by USC, then it will be a tough mountain to climb for the rest of the season…

Nothing would make me happier than UH beating USC…

  61. Bowwar July 15, 2013 1:28 pm

What time is the USC game? When is kick-off time? Gotta see if I have to get off work to attend.

  62. d1shima July 15, 2013 1:32 pm

ESPN is showing an 11:00 pm Eastern time for kickoff which, I believe, still means 5:00 pm Hawaii time.

  64. haka July 15, 2013 1:45 pm

    ST

Did Iuta Tepa sit out spring? Haven’t heard anything on his health, availability, etc..

  65. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2013 1:52 pm

Instead of trying to cut free tickets to car dealers and looking under the couch for nickels, UH should figure out why it’s playing its marquee game on a Thursday afternoon without it being televised nationally. The lost gate is on UH.

  66. Bowwar July 15, 2013 1:54 pm

With the “long snapper” in question, I hope we can improve on our special teams…We had fairly good special teams last year, so it will be interesting to see how we do with new personnel in place.

  67. Warrior Dave July 15, 2013 1:54 pm

Warriors being competitive at Alabama in 2006 set the tone for the entire season and through Colts senior year.

Like Bowwar says, we need to be competitive verses USC. This will set the foundation block for the Chow era.

  68. Bowwar July 15, 2013 1:55 pm

66: ST…Is ESPN showing the game? If so, then maybe its worthwhile for UH.

  69. Bowwar July 15, 2013 1:56 pm

68: Dave…I’d go further, even if we lose to USC, let them go back home feeling like they were in a tough game. That alone will set the tone, as other teams will not look at us as a “body bag” game and take us seriously.

  70. haka July 15, 2013 2:01 pm

    We going beat USC!!!!!!

  71. jimmy the lock July 15, 2013 2:12 pm

Isn’t the USC game being televised on CBS Sports?

  72. jimmy the lock July 15, 2013 2:24 pm

  77. Konoman1 July 15, 2013 5:07 pm

    Wow25… Spoken like a”true”fan….

  78. lava July 15, 2013 5:10 pm

Re the conversation yesterday re Graves, his mistreatment has as much to do with his post-qb role as it did his competing for qb. Recall Chow said how Graves would be used as a weapon as a receiver. Really? Total waste of one of the more athletic Warriors.

  79. Old School Dave July 15, 2013 5:38 pm

The rumors of BYU secretly negotiating with MWC officials are apparently not true. They currently earn $1 million for each appearance on ESPN. If they return to the MWC they would not earn anywhere near that amount.

  80. Buffoman July 15, 2013 6:15 pm

Too bad how some folks live in the past dwelling on the negative. What an unhappy way to look at life. But to eah his own, as they say. Maybe like that unhappy spammer being angry to prove one’s point may be the only way one gets satisfaction.

  81. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2013 6:45 pm

When the roster is more than 100, and only 11 can play at a time, there are going to be a lot of unhappy folks.

In 1992, a player quit at mid-season. The Rainbow Warriors went on to win 11 games, capped by the victory over Illinois in the Holiday Bowl. The player then asked for a WAC championship ring.

There were unhappy players on the undefeated 2007 team.

You feel for guys who practice but don’t get to play.

That’s why there should be an appreciation for a skinny safety who practiced hard but whose career playing time could be measured in minutes. He never grumbled, and he ended up becoming one of the school’s most loyal supporters. That skinny safety was Alan Hackbarth, better known as the Rubberband Man.

  82. mo808 July 15, 2013 6:52 pm

Nice to see the blog without the youknowwhatkinestuffs clogging up da place…

  83. Warrior Dave July 15, 2013 6:56 pm

ST, very well said but some fans just don’t see it that way. They feel all 110 players deserve to play… Oh well such is life.

  84. Warrior Dave July 15, 2013 6:58 pm

    #80 Old School,

True that BYU TV money is better than possible conference $$$. But income stream from other sports are probable lower than conference money and the hassle to schedule games is difficult.

I think there are conversations ongoing but that’s just my 2 cents.

  85. Konoman1 July 15, 2013 7:10 pm

St you are right… At every level of sports there are always going to be unhappy campers and parents…You can see it in Little League and peewee football. It goes on thru High school.. It’s probably more magnified because of the visibility of our Warriors… There are always kids who quit because they are unhappy or they don’t like the coaches. And almost always the parents think their kids should be playing more and fault the coaches.

  86. Konoman1 July 15, 2013 7:11 pm

Hey people.. This ain’t AYSO soccer!!!

  87. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2013 7:14 pm

There’s a saying: Competition makes you better. Playing makes you happier.

OK, I just made up that saying.

  88. 3-Prong July 15, 2013 7:17 pm

ST: Ahhhh, Rubberband Man, The Legend! Guy should get comp season tickets!

  89. Moocher July 15, 2013 7:32 pm

    regarding DG

    …play your 11 best for a given situation…simple.

can’t play 10 and 1 iffy…..unless you are blowing a team out. And that is as ALL decisions are the coaches to make whether you let in the “other guys” or knowing your team has been so terrible all season that you leave guys in and get them more game reps.

  90. Warrior Dave July 15, 2013 7:45 pm

Everyone wants to think they contributed to a win Ing season. Some never make the playing field but are so important in prepping the starters to take the field.

As fans, ST was right that we should make all players feel appreciated for their contributions, no matter what it was and is.

  91. Old School Dave July 15, 2013 7:51 pm

Warrior Dave: Good points. I think a lot of the BYU fans are frustrated that Utah is “moving on” while the Cougars are filling out their football schedule with the likes of Idaho, New Mexico State, Idaho State, Weber State, and Middle Tennessee.

  92. Warrior Dave July 15, 2013 7:55 pm

Why do I feel like starting to shop for Xmas gifts all of a sudden?

  93. Old School Dave July 15, 2013 7:58 pm

Elroy Chong, Tim Feigh, June Jones, Steve Rakhshani, Mike Stennis (RIP), Rodney Glover, John Hao, Nick Rolovich (in 2000), among others could make a case of not being “treated fairly” by their respective coaches. It happens. I also remember when a group of unhappy players quit during the 1992 WAC championship season.

A couple of players I admired who made the adjustment due to changes in the coaching staff and offense were Warren Jones (1988) and Garrett Gabriel (1989-90). Both were recruited by Dick Tomey’s staff and played well under Bob Wagner (Paul Johnson’s spread).

  94. gobows July 15, 2013 8:20 pm

    warriorfan808,

you totally have no clue how much money the UH football puts into the general fund at the UH.

where did the money come from to write off the AD’s accumulated debt?

the AD loses $200k on a bad business deal…then the school pays over a $1 million to find out what they already knew. that they lost $200K. then they pay another $200k to learn how not to be swindled.

without football, manoa will turn into an over priced kcc.

btw, you should go to the food and sports expo on saturday and show your true colors.

  95. eat mor spam July 15, 2013 8:30 pm

The funniest thing about the Graves situation being blown up by some, is the fact that David is one happy Warrior, holds no ill will to anyone and loves the team and Hawaii. Get over it “men”, Coach Graves has and is all the better for it.
