Program provides a boost
It was a pleasant surprise last month when linebacker Tevita Lataimua, who was all but ruled out, met the requirements to play for the Rainbow Warriors this year.
What wasn’t a surprise was that LEMO had produced another successful graduate.
LEMO is a not-for-profit, California-based foundation that offers a program for youths assisting in academics, athletics and life skills. It’s a full menu, requiring youths to focus on all areas. There is no fee to participate.
Lataimua credited LEMO with providing support.
Two of Lataimua’s UH teammates — Leo Koloamatangi and Matt Koloamatangi — also are LEMO graduates.

You know what would probably solve your website issues? This season should be interesting. Kind of an “us against the world” attitude with the team, which can be a good thing.
Defense should be solid finally. Injuries can always mess things up.

Agree that the defense looks much more stout this season. Nice to have some depth, too. The key will be to stay relatively healthy. Should be interesting to see which newcomers in fall camp can contribute right away.
Used to be that a 10,000 square foot weight room was the norm in College football programs. Now you’re seeing 20,000 to 25,000 sq foot weight rooms at many schools, such as Oregon (UPK = Univ of Phil Knight).

Local recruiting is always going to be #1 priority so you gotta assume the goal is to land 2-3 studs from Texas each year and 2-3 studs from Florida, 2-3 kids 2-3 from Louisiana/Virginia pipeline. 7-8 players from Hawaii. 4-5 from Cali. Then the rest is wherever you can find them. I’m guessing Arizona, Utah Samoa, New Zealand, Australia.

48. You are right. I do think Aaron Price is going to help us in that aspect… Our issue is, unlike defense where we have solid leadership and guys who are returning with experience, we have a bunch of new guys.
Our O line is a huge question mark. We don’t know much about Hollis, Griffin, or Wiefels yet. I am hoping John Wa’a is a special type O linemen that starts 4 years. I just know that all of our good offensive teams took some set backs early on.
In 2005, Colt Brennan 1st year was a 5-7 record. Davone and Grice Mullins 1st years starting too I think. Then we all know what happens the following 2 seasons.
2000, Timmy Chang first year we were 3-9. Then he went on to have a pretty good career after that.
So as a realist, I think its very fair to think Graham will struggle early on and winning 4-5 games would be considered a step in the right direction. I wanna see this team grow… By next year, its possible Hawaii fans will be thinking MWC championship.

Also Dejon Allen may see lots of action, especially if Calen Friel moves to the Oline.
Penitito Faalologo should also add some depth to the DE. Though technically a true frosh, Faalologo 2 year removed from HS and he bulked up with muscle.
Also excited to see what DT Elijah Tupai and Nick Childs, DE David Manoa and CB Barry Higdon brings to the table.
jeezy is right on with his roster predictions. Let’s not forget that GDL was moved to DE, right? That might make it harder for him to have a significant impact. Only question mark for me is whether or not Kennedy will have as early an impact as some think. I hope so.

Of course we couldn’t win on the road too often as is still the case, but at least teams gave UH respect when they left the Islands win or lose…
NewWave, my guess is Tupai, Higdon, and Manoa will probably redshirt as freshmen. Physically, I think they need to add strength and weight just like Leo Kaloamatangi did last year. Manoa and Tupai have a good frame, just need to fill it out.
I do expect Dejon Allen to make an impact. I just don’t know if the coaches decided he is a O linemen or D linemen yet. He is a tank though.
I would have included Clay and Alo but I just made a 2 deep chart based on what I think Hawaii opens up the year with.

When UH hired Chow, I guess the UH knew that basically the decision to hire chow was an endorsement of the Utah football program. At this point, looks like all the UH did was move the Utah coaching staff over from Utah to the UH.
Had chow done more than just hire Utah players and pals (e.g., hire outside his comfort zone and pals), I might have had a little more hope for UH going into the first game. At this point, I am not as enthused about chow’s moves and decisions thus far. I understand the diehards here think chow can do no wrong and that is ok. Chow was the 30 year assistant coach and I can understand why he would be a little gun shy and lack confidence in making bold decisions. This is all new to him.
I continue to think the QB call thus far (who starts and current ranking) is flawed and will result in a losing season again, just like last year’s flawed call on QB. The call on QB also continues to favor out-of-staters over in-staters.
I hope I’m wrong, for the sake of the boys, chow.

When I asked if Higdon would redshirt, the answer was: “No!”

73. But we have more depth at DT then DE so it still more likely Tepa gets reps at DE. I could see Tepa playing DT on passing downs if he can create a pass rush from the inside.
DTs are solid. Matagiese, Samia, Malepeai, Tulimasealii, Dejon Allen. At this point, I guess it doesn’t matter too much considering its very early and the defensive alignments interchange throughout the season anyway…. Yap was playing inside and out last year. I assume Tepa can do both too.
When Coach Chow was hired, I gave him the benefit and courtesy of proving his worth in three years unless there was a major professional faux pas or the detrimental accruement of losses and lack of fan support. Every coach hires coaches and acquaintances he or she has either worked with or known in the past unless they have an unquestionably solid resume of experience that needs no introduction.
I do not believe Coach Chow is perfect, as no one is, but I am quite confident that he isn’t afraid to make bold decisions as not everything about him being a head coach is new to him.
I think he knows when to voice up and when to defer. After just one year, I have the optimism and belief that the entire coaching staff is solid and their impact will be seen in this, the second year.
As far as the QB situation and the favoring of “out-of-staters” theory; well, all I can say is that the coaches jobs are always on the line and that means winning. You win by putting the best athletes for their position on the field. It would not behoove any coach to show favoritism to anyone in any position much less the QB if it compromises the success of the team. It may happen, but I don’t believe that is the case here. Graham has the most upside in my estimation.
We shall see. The future is near. We will hear the rights and wrongs, truths or dares and the proverbial “I told you so” from both sides of the fence very soon. In the mean time, I am holding fast to the belief that the best is on the horizon and UH sports as a whole is about to set the sails to success.
Joey Iosefa is another impressive guy.
He’s bulked up, but yet he weighs the same.
Yap was a much more disruptive force from the outside. Laws of physics just took over when he was inside…
If Chow favored “out-of-staters,” then Graves would have been ahead of Higgins, right?
Taylor Graham is a very good quarterback, although I’ve never seen him in a real-game situation.
Higgins is a guy who just moves the chains. It was apparent, especially in that road start, that his deep passes tended to float. But he’s worked a lot on that. He’s smart, very accurate, and has that play-maker gene.
I don’t think we got to see a true representation of Schroeder’s abilities. He was hit a lot last year, starting with the opener. I’d like to see what he can do when he’s healthy and behind this offensive line.
Kekoa’s relative, by the way, has earned praise from the coaching staff. He’s a very good player.
Donovan also has been a pleasant surprise.
Yap admitted it was difficult playing inside, when he faced double blocks. There were a few times he was aligned at the nose.
But he said it was a good experience. Sometimes you need to go through the valleys to get to the peaks. Or something like that.
The biggest issue in my opinion with Iosefa is he’s a natural Fullback. It would make a ton more sense to have him in the backfield with a speedster like Wilson or St Juste. He’s a sub 3.5 yards per carry to runner who is suited more for Goal line and short yards situations while he can open up some monster holes for others on 1st and 10 and 2nd down situations…

I still think this is one of the most important years for the UH football program and for Chow. Lets hope these “changes” and “potential” actually mean something. And we don’t have to wait for the first game, we will be able to tell if these kids can play during practices in August.

90. ST probably knows more but unless someone gets injured, I don’t think he’s in the 2 deep rotation…. From what I saw, he isn’t quick enough to cover TEs, and lacked football speed. He was only a FR. but I would say JGW is much more talented. Heard Lataimua and Gener looking solid so might be hard to get on the field unless guys are getting hurt.

That’s great that you think Iosefa could be used as a fullback. But the fullback position is outdated. It should only be used in short yardage situations. I like Iosefa, but lets face it UH needs more speed. Speed kills and Iosefa isn’t fast

Why not? You have to push your coaches and players to be the best, end of story. 6 wins is all. Not asking a whole lot. What coach would tell their players “it’s ok if you guys only win 3 games. Once our linemen mature and get stronger, it can work. Boise St found a way to do it. San Jose St played a smash mouth style football last year. Granted they have a NFL QB and legit WRs too. San Diego St ran a pro style offense. So it is doable.
But I still agree with you. I prefer to spread it out and get the ball into our play makers hands…
It’s just hard because Chow likes a different type of Line then Mack had recruited. Last year, Chow had no other options but to play freshman or older guys who were from Mack’s recruiting classes.
I think when guys like Koloamatangi (6-5 275), Elijah Tupai (6-4 225), John Waa (6-4 310), David Griffin (6-7 315), RJ Hollis (6-4 285) fill out and get physically stronger, it’s possible to play more physical…. But that could be the optimist in me having wishful thinking… Im willing to give the recruits a shot… These guys seem more athletic than previous era guys tho.

I agree. And I think Chow realized during the offseason he had to change something with his style. Spreading the ball more, getting it into your playmakers hands, and using the whole width of the field to your advantage is something we will see more this year. I hope!

I dont think coach Chow realized anything during the off season regarding his offense…certainly not to open it up with passing; Norm Chow has run some of the NCAA’s most devastating offenses featuring Heisman QB’s that passed everyone’s lights out! Why would anyone think opening up UH’s offense to the pass would be a new idea for him??
For those of you who think that– my advice is ‘hey, pay attention, and do your home work’. Does Ty Detmer come to mind along with Steve Young and a couple of great USC QB’s? Chow is attemping to re-create those style offenses and he’s trying to find the football players who give him the best chance to be able to do that; that means ‘bigger and faster’. What? You people think that he could do that in a single season?

With some patience and a little bit of tweaking on the offense, a win will come. With all these stud, fast, huge and tall athletes coach chow brought in, it will take some time for these players to develop. Kudos to chow’s solid recruiting so far. Couple more years of solid recruiting, we should be solid. Been to unsupervised work out, but from what I observed, opponent will have there hands full win or lose.

Ok Stephen, it seems like other team’s pre-fall camp rosters were also released today…and there is an early enrollee DE from a substantial BCS school (who was previously committed to an even more substantial BCS school) that has disappeared from the earlier spring roster. Dunno if this is the guy, but no guesses or name dropping preferred? We supposed to keep this on the DL?

If we somehow beat sc, losing the rest of the season will be bearable. But I think we’ll win a few or two. It all depends on injuries. Gotta keep ‘um healthy though.
We needed to get playmakers who has special skills with the football and can score. Hopefully, we got some with the big wideouts coming in and some speed on the outside.
We need a special teams kick returner that is electric. With Iosefa, my main concern is ball security. He’s so tough and runs for every yard he can and the tendency is that defenders try to jar the ball out. Turnover! That can’t happens. It just kills scoring chances.
For Graham, the mantra is to just be solid. Don’t have to light up and wing it. Be efficient.
You are the leader of the team. Lead. A trait to have is that the QB is efficient in the red zone. Converting on opportunities lead to sustaining momentum.
Hey, I dont think Chow is a Messiah of UH football. He might not turn out to be a very talented Head Coach, I really have no idea. But to suggest that he doesn’t know what he’s doing is just plain nonsense.
The reason I defend him is that it should be obvious to anyone who has knowledge of the game, of what he’s doing. He’s recreating the UH football program. He was saddled with some players last year that are better suited for other schemes..styles in which their talents are better used. Thats not Chow’s fault.
Last season it was obvious that he was trying to fit the perverbial square peg in a round hole…and above all that, he was trying to figure out what would and would not work with the people he had. Thats called experimenting and frequently one has questionable results when doing that. Chow knew that, why would anyone think he didn’t? One thing I can feel certain about, when all is done, when he puts his pieces in place, your are all going to see a damn good football team that no doubt is going to have their share of wins and even upsets. This season? I dunno, I think it takes a little longer…don’t you think so?
I remember a couple of years ago when Utah had a high number of injuries on offense that Coach Chow came up with a makeshift offensive plan that got them to overachieve. Last year we had a young and overmatched O-line and a very limited Receiver corps. I don’t think he really wanted to a pure ground and pound offense but that was going to be the best of some poor options. Don’t get me wrong, it was a painful season to watch but it was surely much more painful for the coaching staff than for any of us. There will be more passing this year, not because Coach has come to his senses or listened to the fans, but because he has more tools to work with and players who are understanding the system better.
Last year was a brutal homecoming for coach chow but people who knows a little more about a game of football truly understand the real expectation. I’m anxious to see what’s ahead and might go to Vegas to watch them play.

I’ve watched games and practices since JJ’s days. We have had some terrific athletes on JJ’s, and Mack’s teams, especially when we won the WAC. After watching spring ball last year, I’m seeing a very athletic team and the newcomers are expected to make an impact.
We could surprise some folks this year. Optimism is good, patience is a must. These guys have the heart and the skills – the wins will come.

I have not watched much this year so far, but what I have noticed are there are no big bellies on the team, they all look in good physical shape. There seems to be a little more pop in their steps. I see us at 11 – 3.

Fall is in the air…That’s the only rationale reason for all this overhyped, over optimistic talk about Chow and the football team. To me, it is very troubling that Chow, supposedly an offensive guru, has to hire Aaron Price to be Offensive coordinator to change the offense. You never saw JJ doing that; JJ was a certified offensive genius who was running the run and shoot/spread back in the NFL in the 1980s and was way before his time. Look at the NFL now; every team runs some version of the spread. He brought it to UH and devastated defenses; college coaches took notice and now most of the college teams are running the spread. JJ believed in his offense and knew how to tweak his offense.
Chow is installing a new offense that he is not familiar with, proving that he does not believe in his own offense schemes!! That is very troubling, although in a positive spin, it does show that he is willing to change after recognizing that his own offense sucks. Graham has not played a live football game in three years. UH to go 0-5 in first 5 games. Criticize me now for being pessimistic and not a Warrior supporter ( I still have my season tickets for 30 years), but I am being realistic. I will eat my crickets if I am proven to be way off base.
UH has gobs of cash.
Insane spending on the No-Wonder concert and resultant hearing and investigation.

And now $24K per month to Greenwood as a prof.
But, do not worry! She will be here only 6 of 12 months. As a result she will receive just $12K per month.
Geez.
I don’t know but I always felt that life was much more fun when one felt that happiness was around the corner. There’s a study that proves people with optimism live more disease free than those who see the world with doom and gloom.
Looks like a lot of folks will have long happy lives.

As I see it, Chow maybe an offense genius as an Assistant Coach.
But additional duties that come with bring HC does not allow hi. To just focus on this function. I say bravo for realizing your limitations and making positive changes to fix what is wrong.
Believe me, just because Price was hired as OC doesn’t mean he has free reign to run his offense. Go back and listen to him comments when he was hired. He said he’s here to run Chows offense and will add an additional element.
Wafan! We had his discussion the other day. A portion of Greenwood’s salary will come from whatever grants she brings in. How much is unknown to us peons, but if she doesn’t bring in that amount, too bad, so sad. I’ve heard to some contracts being 70-30 grant to state funding. The grants will also pay for some of her staff’s salaries.

I know that Coach Chow likes to throw the ball, but I think you’ll see more of a balanced attack. He’s going to get the type of players he needs and I think it’s going to be awesome. It might take him a year or two to build but I think he’s a perfect fit for the job.”

Yup. I bring in grants for my program, too. But, never see a dime for personal gain. Particularly after the 21% NERCs.
Many would lament not having a $12k monthly salary.
If you expect and except mediocrity, that’s what you end up getting. Demand the best and even if you don’t get it, you might end up with something better than mediocre. Results rise to the level of expectation.

Across the nation, the rule in medical colleges/biomedical programs is that researchers self-fund not only part of their salary but the majority of their support staff as well.
One can argue she wasn’t a great administrator but a renowned researcher in the biomedical field is hired by our Biomed school…What’s that saying…”Nothing to see here folks…” Yup.

For me the buzz word was patience.
This season it’s “unproven.”
By all accounts this year’s team should be better than last year’s. The returnees have a full season and two spring practices in Chow’s system. They’re one year more physically mature. Their off season workout program is under the supervision of a football dedicated S & C coach.
The current recruiting class was touted as being the 2nd best in the MWC. A good combination of Frosh, J Cs and transfers.
Coach Price was brought in to help implement some spread option philosophy to Chow’s offense.
Everything points to a much improved team. I’m very optimistic about our chances this year. But my optimism is tempered by the thought that at this point and until a couple of games are played..most everyone is unproven.
Happy to see so many positive comments..Our Warriors need need positive vibes instead of so called fans tearing down our coaches and team. Maui Warrior your comments are right on!
