Tupai to undergo surgery

By Stephen Tsai on August 5, 2013

After giving it the old college try for a couple of practices, offensive lineman Elijah Tupai decided it was best to undergo surgery for an ailing right shoulder. He likely will miss the 2013 season. Tupai initially suffered the injury in high school. It was hoped a combination of rest and rehabilitation would ease the discomfort and strengthen the area. Tupai said he made his decision Saturday night following the second of this training camp’s non-padded practices. The Rainbow Warriors […]

Sunday notes

By Stephen Tsai on August 4, 2013

• Our thoughts are with defensive end George Daily-Lyles, whose father recently died. Daily-Lyles, who had been in Long Beach the past week, is set to rejoin the team. • Thoughts and prayers also are with defensive back Mike Martin and wide receiver Keelan Ewaliko. Both were excused from practice yesterday because of family matters. • Fitting for a team that is staying in the dance studios, the Rainbow Warriors had a dance-off last night. Running back Willis Wilson represented […]

Iosefa targets opener

By Stephen Tsai on August 3, 2013

If all goes according to plan, running back Joey Iosefa might be available to play in the Aug. 29 opener against USC. “It’s been a week since I’ve been out, and I probably have three more weeks before I start (practicing),” said Iosefa, who suffered a displaced fracture in his left foot last week. Is playing against USC a possibility? “Yes,” he said. “But I have to be smart about myself.” He said he suffered the injury while performing the […]

Aaron Price no longer with UH

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2013

Norm Chow announced this morning that offensive coordinator Aaron Price is no longer with the team. Price did not resign nor was he fired, meaning  his one-year contract — which runs through March — apparently remains in place. He earns about $118,000 annually. UH is not seeking to hire a replacement. Price joined the staff in February after nine years at UTEP, where his father Mike Price was head coach through his retirement in December 2012. There were indications that […]

Start it up

The first practice of training camp begins at 10 a.m. today with 21 five-minute periods of drills. We’ll post pictures from practice later. * * * * * The Rainbow Warriors already incurred one setback. Wide receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann was involved in a car accident a couple of days ago. Stutzmann is better off than the car, which was totaled. He is scheduled for a concussion assessment tomorrow.

ETA is now

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2013

Like the blog’s clock, college football is set to its own timetable. And so while this is Aug. 1 — the 41st day of summer — in football time, this is the start of fall camp. The Rainbow Warrior newcomers reported yesterday, and most of the 104 players on the training-camp roster are expected to check in today. (The Warriors are holding a couple of roster spots for players needing official acceptance into UH.) There will be orientation sessions and […]

Filling out the 104

By Stephen Tsai on July 31, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors are close to finalizing their 104-player roster for training camp. The newest additions are: • Quarterback Adonis Phillips, a UH sophomore who will be used on the scout team. • Defensive lineman Haani Tulimaiau, a Leilehua High graduate who recently returned from a two-year church mission. * * * * * Also, slotback Levi Wilson will join once he completes summer courses at College of San Mateo. He has been accepted into UH, but needs an associate […]

Mustafaa accepts UH offer

By Stephen Tsai on July 30, 2013

Defensive end Naim Mustafaa told the Warrior Beat he has accepted an offer to join the Rainbow Warriors. Mustafaa said he cannot comment further or participate in training camp until he is accepted into UH. He has paid the application fee and submitted his documents. The Warriors open training camp tomorrow, with first-year players reporting. The rest of the players report on Thursday. The first practice is Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. Mustafaa initially made an oral commitment to Georgia […]
