ETA is now

Like the blog’s clock, college football is set to its own timetable. And so while this is Aug. 1 — the 41st day of summer — in football time, this is the start of fall camp.

The Rainbow Warrior newcomers reported yesterday, and most of the 104 players on the training-camp roster are expected to check in today. (The Warriors are holding a couple of roster spots for players needing official acceptance into UH.)

There will be orientation sessions and team meetings through the day.

The first practice is at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

    Good morning everyone!

    The time is now…!

    Football season!

Re: Warrior Beat spam. In the past, as part of my job, I’ve had to help mentally ill patients. People suffering from paranoid schizophrenia tend to write long, rambling, disjointed letters and notes. Just like the spam we see on this blog. Maybe, just maybe, the spammer is schizo?

  9. Chee Hoo August 1, 2013 8:04 am

    Top 10. Ah it’s Thursday!

  10. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2013 8:05 am

They’re going to practice without a day off from tomorrow through Saturday, Aug. 10. All workouts will begin at 10 a.m. I think there’s some sort of a scrimmage-like session on Aug. 10.

  11. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2013 8:06 am

    NotNasti:

He just came from his physical.

He was sitting by his lonesome, so I introduced myself.

Mahalo nui for the invite Pomai, unfortunately, I’ll be back in New Haven by then. However, I will be at the Vegas and Navy games, and up to pa’ina the Tsaikos!!

  14. Ipu Man August 1, 2013 8:09 am

Thank goodness Tsai writes short blogs and postings…

  15. NotNasti August 1, 2013 8:09 am

Band aids on both arms? Veins hard to find? He looks like a good kid. Welcome aboard, Adonis.

  16. A-House August 1, 2013 8:13 am

    boolokanaka:

keep in touch – we would like to meet you at the Navy game.

Perhaps other Tsaikos living east of the Mississippi will attend and post this on this blog.

I would like to set up at date, time, and place for us to gather – would be great!

  17. Haleakala August 1, 2013 8:18 am

Good morning!! I wish I could go to an away game, especially at Navy in early November. But the travel schedule is filled for the year and my wife would say that is it.

  18. Haleakala August 1, 2013 8:23 am

Adonis is a Greek god. Adonis Phillips looks like his name. Welcome aboard!

  19. boolakanaka August 1, 2013 8:23 am

16-A-House, Will do, and I might try arrange something in Annapolis at either the hotel or maybe at one of their famous crab joints???

  20. Ran August 1, 2013 8:25 am

I saw on the newscaster that Colt Brennan finally has the DUI charge behind him. He still has hopes for an NFL future…a long shot at best though, but if I was his agent I would be making contacts now and even getting advice and contacts from June Jones. If I was June, I would send out feelers and put in a good word in for Colt.

yes, it is a long shot to get even a try out, but …….

  21. d1shima August 1, 2013 8:26 am

    Great Morning All!

…and a truly great morning, it is!

    Football is back….

    GO BOWS!

  22. Haleakala August 1, 2013 8:28 am

I think that there should be a system to get rid of spammers and nasty lurkers. Perhaps the ability of put a thumbs down check mark for each post. If a post gets 5 or 10 check marks, it gets automatically deleted. It will save ST from having to cleanup the blog.

Of course, the early readers will still have to see those objectionable posts, but they can have the satisfaction of putting their check marks down to help get rid of them.

  23. d1shima August 1, 2013 8:30 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

  26. SteveM August 1, 2013 8:35 am

Planning on attending any UH football road games this year?

Post here and.or email me for listing on the Tsai-ko Away Game logistics and planner page at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away13.html

Except for Vegas, I usually group email all known travelers a few weeks before game date so they might plan get-togethers and possibly share cell phone numbers. I list hotel and travel agency data since people might be on the same tour or in the same hotel and not know it… has happened. 🙂

  28. Ahikatsu August 1, 2013 8:51 am

Not sure if this has been covered before but why is it that we don’t play Boise St until 2015?

  29. Glenn August 1, 2013 9:11 am

    Mr. Tsai;

Adonis, being a scout team guy, will he and the other scouts be allowed to wear the uniform and run onto the field?

  30. Darren August 1, 2013 9:11 am

Re: Boise State…because of divisional play. If we really want play them before 2015 just gotta win our division.

  31. jimmy the lock August 1, 2013 9:14 am

Football every weekend from now till January. Cheehoo

  38. Darren August 1, 2013 9:25 am

Also for divisional play, IIRC, we play home/away with 3 out of division foes before moving on to the next 3.

  39. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2013 9:26 am

    Re: No Boise.

Luck of the draw. UH doesn’t play New Mexico, either.

Since Jack Flash brought the subject up on yesterday’s blog with his suggestion for “Welcome to the Jungle” by GNR to be used as entrance music….and the suggestion of “Enter Sandman” by Metallica as well…What other songs would be cool entrance themes that would get the place amped up and ready to rock?

  44. Warrior Dave August 1, 2013 9:53 am

Speaking f of recognition, thank god the names will be in the back of the jerseys. The fame wiill be easier for me to follow. Hole they also charge out before the games and dump the intro with intro king arms. ThD symbolism was good but not effective getti g into the flow of the game for players.

  45. Warrior Dave August 1, 2013 9:54 am

    Hi Al!

Or hope you’re the real Al.

  46. jimmy the lock August 1, 2013 9:55 am

When the defense takes the field the band should play the Imperial March, Darth’s theme.

  47. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 1, 2013 9:59 am

Want to say thank you for all the birthday wishes yesterday!

    Have a great one!

  48. Haleakala August 1, 2013 10:03 am

d1Shima: In regards to the first football poll, UH has three teams that had votes: USC, Fresno State and San Jose State. Surprisingly, San Diego State is not shown.

  54. jimmy the lock August 1, 2013 10:15 am

    Don’t forget Oregon St.

  56. Buffoman August 1, 2013 10:19 am

I think if Colt wants to give himself a good shot, maybe he could see if his agent could get him to spend some time with John Gruden to assess his strengths and more importantly, work on correcting his weaknesses.

That would could help better position him.

  64. Pomai August 1, 2013 10:42 am

I personally would like to see all 105 or so players dressed, all enter the field, then all 105 do the Ha’a in the middle of the field………awesome!

  65. boolakanaka August 1, 2013 10:45 am

IT–I’m in New Haven most of the week, but have a place in NYC (plus, we are putting a kid through law school, not our own, in the city) and I go to DC, a couple of times a month, for work. So, yes, I’m up and down this damn NE seaboard.

  66. Independent Thinker August 1, 2013 10:47 am

Do a poll, Pomai. All in favor of the haa? all opposed?

Count me as opposed for the reasons previously given. DPK supports that idea, I know, as we have already had a contentious back and forth on this topic already. Am curious where the majority of the Tsaikos stand on the haa.

  67. Independent Thinker August 1, 2013 10:49 am

kid + law school + new haven = Yale Law. Congrats boola!!! Good job! Hard to get the younginns nowadays to settle down, focus, get her done.

Hahaha…..well, we give it the old college try. But, to be honest, I like the energy and spunk of someone younger around the house, plus, it keeps stuff fun and fresh.

  70. gobows August 1, 2013 10:59 am

if colt wants a shot at the nfl, he should play some games. warren moon started his career in the cfl, and he landed in the hof. i think colt wouldn’t be able to pass the coach beemer test.

  71. markazulu August 1, 2013 11:01 am

Independent thinker espn did a special on usc offense said there deep at running back but silas redd is the starter with a flashy freshmen in justtin davis a speed back in dj morgan and 2 powerbacks also available.

Qb is a 3 way battle between max wittek, cody kessler, max browne with kessler and wittek being the more impressive ones

    Fb is 2 deep

Wr obvious star is lee but freshman darius rodgers, junior victor blackwell and they are saying nelson angular? is a capable replacement for woods

OL 5 guys with starting experience moved a guard in to replace center

    2 capable TE

  72. Hilo Moon August 1, 2013 11:14 am

Just a suggestion for the tunnel entrance onto the field — pump up the volume of the band so the sound comes blasting out of all the speakers with the band playing the opening of Aaron Copeland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” ( the first 30 seconds or so) and then segue into Hawaii 5-0 starting with the percussion intro and when the tune starts, the team comes running out. I think this would really work and get the “juices” going. The whole key to this is that the band gotta be amplified to create that “WOW” factor.

  73. markazulu August 1, 2013 11:18 am

Also stated OLB Devon Kennard and Morgan Breslin are expected playmakers with good leadership

Breslin lasr year had 13 sacks

DE George uko, Leonard williams are 2 De they kept mentioning

Williams had 8 sacks, 64 tackles and 1 int

Uko had 5 sacks and 31 tackles can play both DT and DE said to have good instincts great against run quickness to disrupt passes

WR Lee, AGHOLOR are gonna be the dynamic duo

  74. dream city mike August 1, 2013 11:20 am

Howzit going everyone? One down and four more, very antsy and anxious Thurs. to go! All excellent ideas on entry ambiance …#74 even better!

  75. markazulu August 1, 2013 11:29 am

Te : Grimble, telfer, Jalen cope Fitzpatrick

ESPN could be blowing smoke up our okole like they did last yr but i think our team is capable to hang with um with the staff chow assembled im sure we’ll be WAY better i hope SC gzets over confident

    #makeumhumble

    Mr. A House,

  77. Independent Thinker August 1, 2013 11:39 am

Thanks, Mark, but I was actually asking about UH’s starting lineup. Mahalo, though.

  78. DaveLetterMan August 1, 2013 11:46 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!

Good idea, Hilo Moon. You got my vote.

    Go Bows! Go Warriors!!

  79. Haleakala August 1, 2013 11:47 am

Man, it is so nice to read regular Warrior Blog posts without having to go through spam and the off balanced cut-throat ones.

  80. Haleakala August 1, 2013 11:49 am

If UH can hang in there with USC, attendance at Aloha Stadium will certainly go up for the following games. I do hope that USC does come in expecting an easy game.

  81. cocobean August 1, 2013 11:55 am

Music is fine to pump up the players and the crowd. But it’s the students that create that college game day atmosphere.

Ben Jay and his cronies should organize some kind of “Got USC” tailgate at the stadium. Have the coaches and players from other sports commit to attending. Have the band there. Invite any UH student with ID. Hold it in the hospitality area below the student section.

  82. dream city mike August 1, 2013 11:57 am

Get summer camp to deal with before even worrying about starting line up! I’m sure theirs some 3-4 deep personel in place but all that is tentatve, not counting incoming freshmen!

  83. Haleakala August 1, 2013 11:59 am

Boolakanaka: I see that you are on the east coast. I accompanied my wife and some others to New York and D.C. last month. We were at the capital during the 4th of July celebrations. We also spent a day in Baltimore to catch an Orioles-Yankees game. Of course, we had to eat crab and crab cakes while we were there. So ono!!

  84. Haleakala August 1, 2013 12:05 pm

I just checked how far Annapolis is from Baltimore. It’s less than an hour of driving from Baltimore. It’s very close.

  85. Haleakala August 1, 2013 12:07 pm

I spoke too soon earlier. The spam is coming in again.

  86. Independent Thinker August 1, 2013 12:13 pm

Thanks Mike, nice to know you are ST’s spokesman. Always nice to ask ST for the scoop, if any and if he can share it, and then to get someone else answering for ST.

  87. Warrior Dave August 1, 2013 12:16 pm

I’ve got to give credit to San Jose St for their success last year in the WAC. HOWEVER, i truly wonder how good they really are? The HC moved on this year which doesn’t help their program.

UH should never lose to the bottom 2/3’s of the MWC. If we do, our program will be below the performance level of the JJ era.

  88. boolakanaka August 1, 2013 12:23 pm

The Navy game will be great fun, but its too bad da gang is not in town sooner. Lobsters are super abundant at the moment, and if you know where to go, you can get them directly from lobster fisherman for around 3 dollars a pound. Bruddha lobster poke and tempura until your jaw cannot work anymore….plus, I make a mean lobster ciopinno.

Must be a generational thing…I had to Google “Fanfare for the Common Man”. For me…hard to beat the opening riffs of GnR’s “Welcome to the Jungle”, although I’m sure these preferences are based on fan age demographics. Young ones may have never even heard of GnR. What dat…Axl Rose??

  96. Darren August 1, 2013 1:23 pm

Interesting interview with Coach Chow. I recall when he first got hired and was asked what type of head coach he will be, the answer was “demanding”. Last night when he was asked about the greatest lesson he learned as a 1st year head coach, it was that he understood that he didn’t need to be (or perhaps shouldn’t be) riding players so hard…that they were already fully committed about their effort, the team, and the game within themselves. The effort part was quite apparent, as the players seemed to give 100%+ from beginning to end of game, every game, regardless of what the scoreboard was showing.

It’s pretty obvious that Coach Chow is not the personality type for every player, but I think it’s quite encouraging to see his willingness to adapt to better suit the needs of his current players and team.

For some reason I love this as an entrance for the Warriors, I can picture it on the jumbo tron. Clip from the 1:00 to 1:40 mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRM2YcGpmxg

Leaders who do not adapt tend to make bigger mistakes as they fail to see that the environment in which they operate is in constant change. Some can successfully and stubbornly resist for a period, but for the most part change cannot be stopped.

I see General Custer as one not understanding the environment and changing his way of command. Napoleon being another and the consequences were quite dire, for those in their respective command.

The examples may be a bit stark but those were leaders.

Some may call Coach Chow a flip-flopper. I think he is smart to see that change is necessary and that he does have great pieces (athletes and coaches) to the puzzle to begin to create successes. He may not win it all, but we will see change.

I am optimistic that we have a leader that can bring success.

gobows, Thanks for the link to Leahey & Leahey. Enjoyed the interview with Coach Chow, as well as the one with Athletic Director Ben Jay. These are the two who will shape the future of UH Athletics, along with Stephen Tsaiko, of course.

Good to hear names will be back on the jerseys & that was in the plan all along. What should follow, in my opinion, is now every healthy player should be suited up & on the sidelines at every home game. Every player deserves to be with his teammates on the field of battle. If you’re showing up & practicing everyday, you deserve to be on the field in your uniform on gameday. To me, that’s what “team” is all about.

It would be cool one day for UH players to walk out to something like this.

C’mon Ben Jay make the call to College Station!

  112. Independent Thinker August 1, 2013 5:58 pm

Muhahaha. Nothing funny to me about the chows losing serious bank the way they did. The day I get clowned by a chimp is the day I will wear a monkey suit to a uh game.

  113. dream city mike August 1, 2013 6:04 pm

I think anyone should be ready for change and be able adapt to them. Whether you’re coach and leader or student and player or husband and wife, making the proper adjustments for that change is the difference between success or failure!

  114. oldtimer808 August 1, 2013 6:31 pm

Mahalo markazula for sharing the 1988 UH win over Iowa. I was there what an upset. Our Rainbow Warriors have to believe and can do it over USC.

  115. lava August 1, 2013 7:34 pm

OK, so the scout team qb played high school football. What were his stats?

  116. d1shima August 1, 2013 7:49 pm

How about the team just run outta the locker room, kick some a$$ and walk back in for halftime…repeat for second half.

    I’d be happy.

    markazulu & old timer:

we missed the game because we were at a wedding at the Hilton Hawn Village – had our tickets and change of clothes, but the lion dance and introductions and etc, etc, etc – typical Chines wedding.

it was already half time when we started eating, but listening on the transistor radio – Jason Elam certainly made his mark that night as a true freshman!

  119. wafan August 1, 2013 9:16 pm
