Iosefa targets opener
If all goes according to plan, running back Joey Iosefa might be available to play in the Aug. 29 opener against USC.
“It’s been a week since I’ve been out, and I probably have three more weeks before I start (practicing),” said Iosefa, who suffered a displaced fracture in his left foot last week.
Is playing against USC a possibility? “Yes,” he said. “But I have to be smart about myself.”
He said he suffered the injury while performing the L-test. “I kind of rolled on it and heard a ‘pop,'” he said.
Because the fractured area did not move, surgery was not required. The fracture can heal through the foot being immobilized with a medical boot.

Head coach Norm Chow said it is too early to set the depth chart, but this was the first practice’s No. 1 offensive line:

Wide receiver Vasquez Haynes was running with the 1s when he said he “tweaked” his right shoulder while trying to make a diving catch. He said it’s not a concern, and he expects to resume practicing soon.

Defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii gave himself so-so grades for his debut, but others were impressed with his first-step quickness. (And his second step, and third step …) Tulimasealii plays both the 3-technique and nose tackle, depending on the formation.

Iosefa need not rush. Depth at RB adequate. Young & inexperienced, but talented enough. Hope Vele gets some playing time this year – FB or elsewhere.

I’m very curious as to Chow’s approach, but moreover his application of his particular brand of football on both the staff and players. One item that is consistently reinforced, at least on the professional level, is “buying in” to a particular style of play and/or system. Now, its obvious that Chow is beyond competent as far as Xs and Os, but we are soon approaching the inflection point of whether he has the right temperament, leadership skills, and personality that will lend towards the program rallying around his system.
His history says we all should give him the benefit of the doubt until there is some measure or metric that says otherwise….

What’s interesting is that Chow said he’s a “passing guy.” That’s pretty much his background. Now he wanted to improve the physical part with run-blocking linemen and tight ends, but going with more of a running game last year was probably out of necessity. Basically, with a young defense that was hurt by injuries, he tried to shorten the game on offense with the running attack. This year, you’ll see more of what probably is considered his style.
By the way, Allen Sampson played well yesterday. He had a nice touchdown. He’s a deep threat, probably more on the perimeter than in the slot.
#280 post of Norm Chow interview I found him straight forward and a no nonsense coach who realize he has to produce this season and show improvement from last year. Very gruff demeanor who has had successful seasons at MAJOR college programs as an accomplish Offensive Coordinator but can he translate that being a successful head coach especially in Hawaii in which football is the KING of the islands.
I feel he can recruit and judge talent but can he relate to the players of today and surround himself around good assistants that can take on the tough schedule he has this season and use his EXPERIENCE to get the program back close to the June Jones era.
That question alone is going to take time but how much time you give Chow a gentlemen in his late years who has proven as a quality play caller that the run n shoot is out and back to a pro set offense that features the running game. Can he please a fan base that is use to exciting offense and tough defense while reporters wait patiently and ask tough questions on why this and that did not work.
The key to this season is the quaterback Graham I do believe setting the tone of the offense and the OFFENSIVE line that has been work in progress over the years. Time will tell good folks as we all will be watching very closely satisfied or mad “stink eyes” for the play or lack there of.

People are going to like Graham, not just as a quarterback, but he’s truly a nice guy. He’s also very competitive.
As a reporter, I respect Schroeder. For all the pounding he took last year, and for many of the one-sided outcomes, he always manned up and represented the team in post-game interviews. There were times he was really hurt, maybe even concussed, but he didn’t try to hide. You have to respect a guy like that.
And, of course, everybody likes Jeremy Higgins. He works hard, and he’s a good teammate.
Is this team better? The same?
I don’t know.
But this looks like a different team. Remember what it was like when Darius Bright first arrived? There are, like, five Bright-sized receivers. Graham has some nice targets.
Seemed like it was David Griffins job to lose at LT. Did he not impress or did Sean improve a lot? I always thought Sean footwork was too slow for LT but maybe could play guard

Day 2 has begun
Not our beloved warriors, but a little something on local boy, Brandon Hardin of Kamehameha. In short, he has a bunch of high expectations placed at his feet….from a bears blog from a day ago….Athletically, it’s clear that Brandon Hardin belongs. He’s imposing, and he has the kind of athleticism that doesn’t just raise eyebrows, it makes them jump off your forehead and ask how it is possible for somebody that big to move that fast. However, despite being a third-round draft pick just over a year ago, he’s going to be under the microscope all camp.
He seems to understand that, though, and nobody has higher expectations than himself.
“My No. 1 goal is to be healthy. Obviously, I have to shake that ‘injury-prone’ tag,” he said. “I just want to go out there and play football like I know I can, and once that happens I know everything else will fall into place as far as playing time, and eventually I hope to prove I can be a starting safety here.”

ST’s remark about Coach Chow being forced to run more last year than he liked due to necessity is on the mark.
Coach is known for his passing attack but realistically he knew that he had to run more to keep the defenses honest. The poor quarterback still took a pounding on passing downs.
A better offensive line this year will enable Coach Chow to play his game.
I hope to attend practice next week when I’m in town. Go Warriors!!! Cheewhooo! We got 104 guys on this team that want to kick some a$$ this year.
I’m impressed with Sully making the competition fierce as a newcomer. We’re all one team. Everybody needs to contribute. I do want Iosefa back by USC. Need his pass protect more than anything, being first game for a few.

You’re 100% right. Our Defense will be much better as well so it gives him that opportunity to throw the ball more as well…
It all begins with the O-line. They need to be much improved or it’ll be more of last year part 2.
JJ had the correct formula. As long as his team could score, it kept the fans interested and bought him time to build the defense. Last years offense was so terrible, it was painful to watch.
Expectations are much higher this year with the influx of new talent. Go Warriors!!!!
There is a nice article about Mike Milovale in the Montery Herald. Here is an excerpt:
“Last year was a big adjustment,” Milovale said. “I was learning a system, playing Division I football. I just feel like I can handle any position on the line this season.”
Part of that confidence stems from having an entire offseason to fully grasp the playbook and improve his speed and strength in the weight room.
“He’s trimmed down,” Collins said. “He came in with raw natural size. Now his physique has a completely different makeup.”
Hawaii, which opens its season hosting USC, struggled last fall, winning just three games. Five of its losses came against bowl teams.
Yet, Hawaii closed the season with a pair of wins to build momentum into this fall. While a core of the team is back, an infusion of talent has heightened expectations of a turnaround.
“We have a lot more team speed,” Milovale said. “We are faster and stronger. We ran a lot of no huddle last year. I think we’re going to be more balanced.”
No longer is playing in the NFL a youth’s dream. Milovale has a vision.
“It’s definitely a goal to play in the NFL,” Milovale said. “Coach Chow said I should have the NFL as a mindset. This might be my final college season. But I’m not looking at this as my final season of football.”

What folks should also remember is that even in the days of Tomey, it was not necessarily the most high powered and/or consistent offense. Rather, much of the game plan was around a very tenacious defense and stellar special teams play. No doubt, there were play-makers from Gary Allen to Ralph Cherry to Walter Murray, however it was in no way the centerpiece of the team. My point is that the offense, no matter the style, has to be efficient and moreover it cannot consistently place the defense in acute positions. (see the Super Bowl wins of Tampa and B-More)
Thus, even a rather staid offense like Alabama looks like a rocket when executed well, that and having 5 NFL bound O-lineman.

No doubt, but when you have entirely almost superior athletes at most every position, and this is go for most coaches, Saban included, they relish, no love to beat the sh*t out of the opponent, and snatch their will. See how he methodically destroyed Notre Dame. He would rather win on 36 trap play every day of the week, than a 45 yard post pattern for a TD.

I think with Graham as QB, we will see less sacks with his quick release time and possibly a little more agile. We’ll probably see more late hit calls this season than sacks.
Sean on the left could mean three things — the first, he is the best Tackle we got going for us and he will play the important role in protecting Graham’s blind side. The second might mean that we are thin at the tackle position. Third….It’s still very early. I think I’ll go with the third option. I like Kolomatangi, but the brother seems a little light. I know he gained 30lbs in the off season, but he still looks to be 285 at best. I’m sure Naeole is on it and the competition will progress. I thought the LT competition would fall between Griffin, Molivale, and Lloyd.

Now mind you I just got here as a freshmen so the honolulu ford commercial I was not privelage too but Mr. Wayne Crowe was as he had to sit out the first 6 games of the season.
Incidently, I saw Wayne just a year ago and I mention your name and he wanted me to thank you personally for you representing him as he was young and caught up in the whole fiasco of the frenzy that season. Wayne is doing well in the film industry and still articulate as ever.
See what good deed you accomplish when you saved young athletes they go on and perform on a wider stage knowing that there is liberty to truth and justice !
