Filling out the 104

The Rainbow Warriors are close to finalizing their 104-player roster for training camp. The newest additions are:

β€’ Quarterback Adonis Phillips, a UH sophomore who will be used on the scout team.

β€’ Defensive lineman Haani Tulimaiau, a Leilehua High graduate who recently returned from a two-year church mission.

* * * * *

Also, slotback Levi Wilson will join once he completes summer courses at College of San Mateo. He has been accepted into UH, but needs an associate degree to meet the NCAA requirements to play this season.

* * * * *

Duane Kurisu and Norm Chow will be hosts of a luncheon for the coaches and athletic department staff today at the Pagoda restaurant. No state, athletic department or Na Koa money will be used.

* * * * *

Wonder why we like him?

It’s because today is his birthday.

Birthday wishes to I Wonder Why They Hate Me.

    #9,

Berry good. It was getting beyond annoying. When I read a post from DPK, I want it to be the real DPK, even if in reality the fake DPK may at times sound more coherent. =P. Jk brother!

  12. rage777 July 31, 2013 8:13 am

Another quarterback? Can’t one of the third or fourth string QBs take the scout team? I think we need more O-line players. Isn’t that usually where the injuries occur. People will say they are deep at the line, then one guy goes down, another has to shift to that position which was already thin, then all of a sudden we are not as deep as we thought.

  13. WWF July 31, 2013 8:15 am

Can we have a free day to impersonate the impersonators? That would be interesting.

  14. NotNasti July 31, 2013 8:17 am

Good job ST (holding imposter posts). But humbug for you huh? Why do people have to post as other people? There’s a certain level of anonymity anyway.

How about starting an impersonator thread, and toss all of those crack blocks head over heels into that blog?

  17. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2013 8:27 am

The late Vincent Price was an art collector. He noted that some forgeries were so good that the artist creating them could have become famous if he painted original art. Some impersonated comments are creative and intelligent, and probably would be worthy of our praise and admiration if they didn’t hit the cutting-room floor.

  18. boolakanaka July 31, 2013 8:36 am

    Aloha all….!

  19. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2013 8:37 am

Teams need players like Adonis Phillips, guys who understand their unheralded roles.

In the past, there probably were too many quarterbacks on the team. It probably creates distraction when players who believe they should be starting are working on the scout team.

  20. boolakanaka July 31, 2013 8:41 am

Little blurb on Greg Salas out of Eagles camp: “Greg Salas has come out of nowhere to be consistently impressive. He is a natural slot receiver.”

On a more serious note, a very well written piece by Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega

It’s Time to Change the Redskins’ Racist Name

    July 30, 2013

The fact that the NFL and Commissioner Goodell continue to deny this is a shameful testament of the mistreatment of Native Americans for so many years. It is quite obvious that once the American public understands why the word β€œredskins” is so offensive, they will know that the word should never be used again.

The origin of the term β€œRedskins” is commonly attributed to the historical practice of trading Native American Indian scalps and body parts as bounties and trophies. For example, in 1749, the British bounty on the Mi’kmaq Nation of what is now Maine and Nova Scotia, was a straightforward “ten Guineas for every Indian Micmac taken or killed, to be paid upon producing such Savage taken or his scalp.”

Just as devastating was the Phips Proclamation, issued in 1755 by Spencer Phips, Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of the Massachusetts Bay Province, who called for the wholesale extermination of the Penobscot Indian Nation.

By vote of the General Court of the Province, settlers were paid out of the public treasury for killing and scalping the Penobscot people. The bounty for a male Penobscot Indian above the age of 12 was 50 pounds, and his scalp was worth 40 pounds. The bounty for a female Penobscot Indian of any age and for males under the age of 12 was 25 pounds, while their scalps were worth 20 pounds. These scalps were called β€œredskins.”

The question is quite simple: suppose that a β€œredskin” scalp that was brought for payment was your mother, your wife, your daughter, your father, your husband, or your son? The fact is Native Americans are human beings, not animals.

The current Chairman and Chief of the Penobscot Nation, Chief Kirk Francis, recently declared in a joint statement that β€œredskins” is β€œnot just a racial slur or a derogatory term,” but a painful β€œreminder of one of the most gruesome acts of . . . ethnic cleansing ever committed against the Penobscot people.” The hunting and killing of Penobscot Indians, as stated by Chief Francis, was β€œa most despicable and disgraceful act of genocide.”

The NFL – Modern-Day Institutionalized Racism

Recently, I and nine Members of Congress explained the violent history and disparaging nature of the term β€œredskins” in a letter to Mr. Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington football franchise. Similar letters were sent to Mr. Frederick Smith, President and CEO of FedEx (a key sponsor for the franchise), and to Mr. Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League.

As of today, Mr. Snyder has yet to respond. Mr. Smith ignored our letter as well, opting instead to have a staff member cite contractual obligations as FedEx’s reason for its silence on the subject.

Mr. Goodell, however, in a dismissive manner, declared that the team’s name β€œis a unifying force that stands for strength, courage, pride and respect.” In other words, the NFL is telling everyoneβ€”Native Americans includedβ€”that they cannot be offended because the NFL means no offense. Essentially, Mr. Goodell attempts to wash away the stain from a history of persecution against Native American peoples by spreading twisted and false information concerning the use of the word β€œredskins” by one of the NFL’s richest franchises.

Mr. Goodell’s response is indicative of the Washington football franchise’s own racist and bigoted beginnings. The team’s founder, George Preston Marshall, is identified by historians as the driving force behind the effort to prevent African Americans from playing in the NFL. And once African Americans were allowed to play in 1946, Marshall was the last club owner to field an African American player – a move he reluctantly made some 14 years later in 1962. It should be noted that Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy presented Marshall with an ultimatum – unless Marshall signed an African American player, the government would revoke his franchise’s 30-year lease on the use of the D.C. Stadium.

Congressman Tom Cole, the Representative from Oklahoma, Co-Chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus, and a member of the Chikasaw Nation, states: β€œThis is the 21st century. This is the capital of political correctness on the planet. It is very, very, very offensive. This isn’t like warriors or chiefs. It’s not a term of respect, and it’s needlessly offensive to a large part of our population. They just don’t happen to live around Washington, D.C.”

Congresswoman Betty McCollum, the Representative from Minnesota and Co-Chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus, states that Mr. Goodell’s letter β€œis another attempt to justify a racial slur on behalf of [Mr.] Dan Snyder,” owner of the Washington franchise, β€œand other NFL owners who appear to be only concerned with earning ever larger profits, even if it means exploiting a racist stereotype of Native Americans. For the head of a multi-billion dollar sports league to embrace the twisted logic that β€˜[r]edskin’ actually β€˜stands for strength, courage, pride, and respect’ is a statement of absurdity.”

  35. Old School Dave July 31, 2013 10:04 am

It might be better for UH to hold their entire fall camps in the future at one of the military bases here. They seem more supportive of UH Football than the University and the entities within.

ST: It must take much of your time to cleanup the posts by spammers, impersonators, and the rascals who try hard to make everybody else mad. Thanks for doing the deletes.

Maybe there should be a system where posters can get negative charkmarks by others for offensive and inappropriate comments. Too many checkmarks and you are out!!

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Getting excited for fall camp. Adonis is a great name for a football player! Good luck to him!

I think its a wonderful idea to use some form of crowd control here on the WB. Thanks for erryting you do to keep things rolling, Mr.Tsai! To your title of hardest working sports reporter in town, you may also add the ultimate Tspaminator!

Sounds like a movie – “In a world ravaged by Grease, Spam and Zombie sock puppets, there would be one man to stand against them all… The Tspaminator!”

    40. Sad, but apparently true. Ben-Apple need to get all those highly paid UH-Manoa administrators on the same page & support UH athletic teams 100% (legally of course) instead of trying to find excuses. Put that in as a performance goal to keep their lofty salaries.

  50. Da Punchbowl Kid July 31, 2013 11:31 am

  53. Independent Thinker July 31, 2013 11:40 am

@ 41. If ST does what you are suggesting, there will be no one here except cheerleaders. What fun would there be at that point? The danger with that kind of thinking is it forces all to conform in thought, allegiance, expression, and belief or face expulsion from the island.

Mao Tse Tung and Pol Pot (1.7 mill of his own people killed for not thinking like Pol and his henchmen) come to mind when I think about the “thought police” idea you are suggesting. Anti-American, that idea certainly is…

Otherwise, glad to see chow is finalizing the roster. Still hoping the St Louis guy gets the nod. There is still time and hope he might, even if only remote.

  54. Independent Thinker July 31, 2013 11:42 am

  58. boolakanaka July 31, 2013 11:51 am

OK, I need the sage counsel of the board here on a non-football related subject. I am going to be back home in September, and I usually take the family out for a meal when I’m home. About 20 or so usually folks make it out, and in the past, the usual suspects have been, Side Street, Willows, Happy Day or Duk Kee Chinese in Kaimuki. Also, I have some momona family members who can flat tear it up, and as well, some older aunty types, that don’t go for the whole nouveau Alan Wong aesthetic. Plus, I always flip for the entire thing…my goal is to try and keep it under a 1000, but when you get hungry relatives, what can you do….suggestions??

  59. kawika49 July 31, 2013 11:56 am

ST, could you ask your IT people if they could limit the word count per response/comment?

That way they can bounce the long spammers/crazies.

If you have more to say, re=enter and post a continuing response.

  70. Old School Dave July 31, 2013 1:34 pm

    Stephen Tsai:

    May 27th, 2013 at 11:36 am

The Warriors were willing to pay for the dorm rooms. Then they were told that they would be assessed an additional daily fee of $5 per person. So, 104 players and two coaches (to do nightly monitoring) and that comes out to an additional $530 per day.

    What’s the extra fee cover?

    Apparently to wash the linen.

So the UH coaches said the equipment folks will wash the linen.

Then the coaches were told that, no, whether they wash their own stuff or not, they have to pay the fee.

And that’s how they ended up in the dance studios.

    *******************************

UH dorms remain empty for the most part, except for some summer school students. I can just imagine the UH housing official who wouldn’t allow the football team to be put up in the dorms (even though they were willing to pay for it) during fall camp.

“No, no, no. You have to pay the extra fee for laundry, regardless. It’s university policy. No, no, no!! It doesn’t matter if you wash your own linens. You will still be charged. You have to follow UH policies in place. Now don’t bother me with such nonsense.

Whoa, those football coaches are such a pest. They keep me from watching my Korean Dramas on my computer!!”

Mahalo Coach Chow for bringing back the player’s name on the back of the jersey and you made Leahy happy for breaking the news on their show.

  98. Bowwar July 31, 2013 7:50 pm

Chow is doing damage control…I hope he can turn things around.

  99. Stephen Tsai July 31, 2013 8:01 pm

It was always his plan to bring back the names. They took them off to promote team unity, then planned to bring them back. He’s also changing the intro music and way they enter the field.

Is it replayed on cable later this week?

  102. mo808 July 31, 2013 8:11 pm

ST, I am so very happy to hear tha some of the game time things like entrance and music will be different! We really need the 12th man on the field!

  106. AllG July 31, 2013 8:29 pm

ST, any update on Tigi Hill?

  107. Jack Flash July 31, 2013 8:31 pm

I wish they would play “Welcome To The Jungle” by Guns n Roses for the intro music when the players run onto the field. The buildup to the song is similar to Metallica’s “Sandman” and is appropriate for the crazy atmosphere we are trying to create.

  108. Leron July 31, 2013 8:34 pm

#109 good song….but keep in mind that the song was popular before any of the players were born. πŸ™‚

    Still going get the sing-a-long?

    “Country road, take me home,

    to the place I belong,

    West Makaha, Mount Ka’ala.

Oh, take me home, oh, country road.”

  111. Jack Flash July 31, 2013 8:49 pm

@Leron- good point. I was just thinking of something similar to what Virginia Tech does with the “Sandman” entrance. That stadium “rocks!”

Last year, Hawaii competed and hung around against USC at their place. USC was probably 10-20 times better than this years squad, and now, Hawaii is 10-20 times better this year. We’re playing at home and confidence is much higher. BEAT USC
