LAS VEGAS — Well, that was surprising.
The UH coaches will have to address several areas in this week’s practices. And after UC Davis, the Warriors are back on the road. With the bye between the Louisiana Tech and San Jose State road games, fans will have seen the Warriors at Aloha Stadium only twice in the season’s first seven weeks.
Which brings us to what appears to be the majority opinion for the Warriors: No more back-to-back road games.
Eleven days on the road — and eight missed school days — are just too much, even for the most business-minded teams.

It could be a significant loss if defensive tackle Haku Correa’s injured ankle keeps him out of the rotation.

Very disappointing road trip with 2 loses. Lots to work on this coming week. We’ll see how well Mack can keep the guys motivated. UC Davis might be what is needed to figure things out but we can’t be taking them lightly.

Before you bet the house on Hawaii and give away 18-20.5 points, remember 2003 and 2009 when the Warriors came into Vegas as a big favorite after a week at a PAC10 school (USC ’03 and WAZZU ’09) and looked at the UNLV game as Tune Up, Practice Session, Cake Walk, etc.
Our inexperience Oline at the start of the year is now without Chauncey and Sean on the right side, replaced with former walkon Faaumu and 5th year junior Legay. Our most consistent receiver Miah is out. UNLV’s WR Payne (6’3”) is back for his senior year and will be watched by Tank (5’10”), again.
Did the Rain storms, hinder the impact on the Warrior’s practice this week?
I know the Warriors will win, but I hope they prove me wrong and blowout the spread..

It’ tough to win on the road, no matter how weak the opposition is perceived to be. Even the 12-0 2008 Warriors struggled to win at Nevada and San Jose St. Go Warriors!!

Still stinging from last night’s debacle in the desert. And I’m not talking about Mayweather-Ortiz.
We didn’t take care of the ball.
UNLV was very opportunistic, and took advantage of everything, including the one-way officiating. As if they needed any extra help.
We gotta get our act together. Get our heads in the game. Still early in the season to make a huge difference. Can be done. Has been done as recently as last year. Everyone has to go into this for the team. Some are obviously giving 110%, while others seem to get rattled when not facing our scouts.
Everyone’s gotta be hungry every play, even after suffering setbacks. That body language is just communicating to the rest of our teammates that we’ve mentally given up. That does not belong on our side of the field.
Keep your heads up, Warriors. Fix things, heal up, and move on. Remember this sick feeling, and vow to never experience it again. Leave it ALL on the field… ALWAYS!!!

Besides, Haku Correa, I noticed that on Jackson’s long run late in the game, Art laurel got up slowly, favoring his left arm or shoulder. What’s his status? Anyone else we missed? How about when Tank got rolled on? Was it his ribs or right knee?
That was one of the hardest games I’ve ever had to watch… Hawaii’s had their fair share of disappointing losses in the past few years… But last night was atrocious… Hope we can bounce back hard against UCDavis… It’s gonna be a loooooong week

Any word on when that officiating crew will be handed their fines and suspensions, and sent back to Pop Warner officiating, with heavy emphasis on impartial and fair judging of sports competitions?
That was definitely one of the worst jobs of officiating I’d witnessed in ages. Not only the flags, but also the review booth.
And what’s the rule on that UNLV catch-n-make-a-football-move-then-get-popped-so-the-ball-comes-out fumble? Hawaii scooped it up as immediately as possible, given that the ball squirted out.
Because I knew this was going to be a close game and possibly an upset, I actually had a nice evening with the Wife and Sons… Normally I would be all Habut and put myself in a cave. I didn’t bother listening to the Call in Show after the game and refused to watch the News…
I’ve come to realization that this is not a great team and double digit win total should not be EXPECTED.
We could go 7-6, but I’ll be elated if this happens:
1) Win the WAC, even if it’s co or tri champs
2) Win A Bowl Game for the 1st time since 2006
3) BEAT BYU!!!!!

Don’t blame the refs? Didn’t you watch the game? We made more than enough mistakes ourselves to lose. But UNLV didn’t need the extra help they got from the one-sided officiating. That was so blatantly obvious. Crybabies? That’s the best you can call me for calling out that crew? When an injustice has been done, especially over and over in one game like last night, how can you not question it?

But when the team loses like how it did, we fans shouldn’t be like Michigan St, Nevada fans, coaches and players (Colin Kappernick) and blame everyone but themselves.
I can see if the game went down to the wire, but even if the refs were 100% on their mark, Hawaii still would have lost to a team that was getting 19-20 points from the get go.
Hawaii was on the road.. The HOME Team ALWAYS gets the calls… As much of a homer that I am, I gotta admit Hawaii has had it’s share of call gone their way at Aloha Stadium. One’s that actually affected the outcome of the game

The refs did NOT change the outcome of this game. I was at the game and saw a *lot* of penalties that should have but were not called on UH. There were calls that went in favor of UNLV of course, but there were also calls in favor of UH too. You get upset when UNLV benefited from the calls, but probably were happy when UH did so.
The game was lost by UH fumbling the ball so many times. That had NOTHING to do with the refs.
UH fans were brutal towards fans and players of other teams when they complained about the refs in the past. This game simply wasn’t close enough for the refs to have any impact in the outcome.
After last night, I’m officially calling the WAC D.O.A.
So many quality games yesterday, and not one team from the WAC was able to offer competition.
Yes, the refs did not change the outcome, but still looked dazed & confused through the game. Must be something in the air with the Vegas atmosphere.
The game wasn’t as close as the score at halftime. UNLV’s QB missed a wide open WR for a TD late in the first half. UH’s first TD came after the refs called two penalties against UH after they had stopped UH…without the penalties, UH would have punted instead of getting a TD.
UH was lucky to be down just 10 at halftime since that should have been 24 points. UH had a great chance to win. UH fumbled 3 times in the first 4.5 minutes of the second half to give away the game. That had nothing to do with the refs…UNLV was trying to give the game to UH in the first half and UH didn’t take it.
The best thing, and most surprising thing to me, about the game was how cordial it was. Unlike 2007 and 2009, I didn’t see a single fight and didn’t see a single fan kicked out of the game. It was very, very different in past years in Vegas.
The only bad fan behavior that I thought was over the line was when a UH fan stood up and flipped off the UNLV fans after a UH TD…when UH was way behind still.
Come home.

So what if the refs did not change the outcome of the game? That’s not even the point. You might have been at the game, but can you see up close, and replays, like we can at home?
I already stated we made a ton of mistakes. Not once did I say that our loss was solely due to the refs. THAT would be crying about it and blaming the refs. I may not be an expert, but I played for many years. When blatant infractions are not called, and most things that are called go against you, it gets stuck in your psyche. There were a ton of non-calls in UNLV’s favor. It’s over and done with. But, I’m sure Coach Mack and staff will go over the film and submit formal complaints on this one.
Like when that UNLV RB got stopped and pushed back at the goal line. He got up and swung and hit the back of one of our guys’ helmets. No call, even though the refs were there. You can bet top dollar that if we did that, we’d have an ejected player.
Receivers were often in the same area, running similar routes, or even giving up on a route when the play is not even dead yet. This, on top of not catching very catchable balls.
Turnovers gave UNLV a short field too often, although our defense got burned on a couple of big plays.
QB-Center exchange has been poor these past couple of games. Plus, going for the home run too often instead of going back to moving the chains efficiently with the short passes.
Whatevas. I pau. I concede to you experts. Perhaps I’ll try lurking. Can’t even try to make a point without it being twisted around into something else.

Went to bed, rocked my newborn son, and walked the dogs this morning. And I still can’t get that yucky UNLV taste out of my mouth. DAMN!

Very disappointng game to attend. To be so highly favored and with a large fan base in attendance the warrior football team and coaches did not show up to play. It was a total embarressment. The team lacked any type of leadership. Mcmacken and the team owes the State of Hawaii and the thousands of fans in attendance an apology for their poor effort and performance.
Three straight games that Sila been struggling with bad snaps. At Washington, I thought it was just because Alameda Ta’amu was giving Sila fits. If this is not correctable, time for London or Kody to get their chance. The snap is the lifeline of our offense. Bad snaps throw off the timing.

So far, Darius Bright and Billy Ray have NOT lived up to their billing. I’m sorry because I know there are a lot of Billy Ray fans on this board. Just calling a spade a spade. We need more Justin Clapps — backups who are HUNGRY for their chance and make the most of their time when they get in. And maybe we need to accept the reality that Mo is not a long ball guy. I don’t think he has completed any long balls like Colt and T. Chang had us accustomed to seeing.

So why did Mack keep the troops on the mainland? There was no long flight to La Tech, Army, or anywhere else that made staying in Vegas so important. No one is asking this one out loud. Seattle is a hop across the pond, and that game ended early, Seatac airport is 20 minutes from Husky Stadium the boys could have napped on the flight back home and been in their beds here on Oahu, all week. Then they would have practiced all week in Hawaii, gone to their classes like the student athletes they are supposed to be and prepared to win a very important football game after losing at Washington. Vegas isn’t a big haul the troops could have left early on Friday morning from Hawaii, with the UNLV game being a reasonable Saturday start time, and had a late Friday afternoon walk thru and headed to bed early for battle Saturday with UNLV. This was picked as an easy win and a week of good times and strutting around sin-city town by Mack and his staff and we all know Mack has a home in Vegas. I think this is a lesson for the whole athletic department on how and when to travel like a program that puts winning first and partying second. Nice wake up call and time to roll up the sleeves and get back to work.

The guys in charge crunch the acct. #’s. I trust them for the right decision. Might not make sense from the players/Fans perspective, but it’s all about the $ right now.
Staying all week in Vegas with catering costs, rooms and the like is in no way any cheaper than flying back from the Washington game. This was a party and an easy win in the staff’s eyes and a nice week on the slot machines at night for Mack and it blew up in their face. That’s reality.

They say that 80% of all communication is non verbal and it was obvious from the start, at least to me, that the Warriors did not exude the confidence and or swagger that is required to just compete. Moniz was a poor leader last night and not because he fumbled twice. His demeanor was anything but inspiring and his poor decisions should have resulted in more points for the Rebels. Not all his fault obviously because the special teams and defense fanned the flames for sure.

The scheduling of back-to-back games on the road is to blame, if you ask me.
Fatigue, mentally and physically sets in and all of a sudden towards the end, everything seems out of sync. I’m no doctor, but I’ve been there, so I’m just sayin. I saw a drastic fall off from the Washington game and last night…I’m sure I’m not alone in that observation.
Got to agree with Westside here. I did not see in his initial comment placing all the blame on the outcome on the officiating. It was, as I read it, a part of the UH debacle. The blame as I interpreted his comments was squarely on the no-show UH effort.
Don’t lurk, that was a good observation. And yes, I agree that there were a bunch of calls that went our way also. The consensus could be that the refs were simply terrible and possibly with a slight MWC slant.
My take on the game.
Offense needs to go to ball control, short passes and runs, to help out the defense.
Defense needs to by simplified. Too many substitutions and schemes, they seem to be confused. Go back to McMackin style defense.
Bright seems to be injured and unable to get clear and often drops the ball when it does get thrown to him.

Not entirely accurate, there are still a few players on this team who were on the Sugar Bowl team or grayshirted that season and started in 2008.
And on another note, while Mack had voiced a preference for staying on the continent, there was already a problem with getting a flight to Vegas as “Ferd” explained in April. So who was responsible for dragging his arse and not booking the flights?

Ahhh #43 finally I totally agree on the defensive schemes being too complicated. Too many schemes is confusing to these players. Yes keep it simple, keep to your assignment areas, attack from those areas and execute. On the offense take a hard look at our new receivers and see who is ready to rumble. Bright needs to heal up. He is just not ready for prime time. Keep supporting our team no matter what. These young student/athletes needs our support.

Tired of the secondary getting burned. When are people going to start questioning the DB coach? Isn’t that Miano? Our DB’s have long been the demise of our defense, yet I never hear anyone call out Miano.
Players still having problems with their alignments and seem to be confused at times. It is the fault of the coaches. They need to do a better job.

One word describes the teams performance and that is pathetic. Like big wave said, we lost the game in every faze possible. There once not one thing you could look and say, hey we have hope. Like Strech said above, we need to use the UC Davis game as a fix it game and we need to fix alot of stuff.
…meanwhile, as Tsaiko-Vegas#3 winds down, rash begasu has suggested a Tsai-ko dinner at 7:30 pm at the Main Street Station buffet.

You know, I don’t think any of use realistic fans need an evaluation. Just stating some facts.
Yes it is hard for even someone like me to say that the team look pathetic but it is what it is and if you ask any knowledgeable footbal player or coach, they would probably have the same assessment. They probably wouldn’t use the same word but have the same concept.
The bottom line though is that the team gotta dig deep and so do the coaches. Yes we have alot time left to fix our problems but in the scope of things, we really do not have alot of time when all three fazes of the game have failed us in one way or another.
As a coach myself, I would say fixing small stuff here and there are no problem but fixing major gap protection, offensive blocking schemes, special teams blocking schemes, even something like scraping techniques are not as simple to fix as people thing. I just hope the coaches can go back and see what needs to be fixed.

How did we fumble so many times (four)… snap/roll/dink the ball to the QB so badly… Warriors played like it was their first day of Spring Practice… miss two field goals… only got 1 third-down conversion out of 9 attempts. It was a day of infamy. UNLV had possession of the ball 11 minutes more than UH.
Must have been the solar flares…
GARRET and CoolEthan have the right stance on the game. Half of the teams playing yesterday lost. We were one of them. It wasn’t referees – though they did not help any – it wasn’t staying over on the Mainland – one player summarized it – we did not execute – the other team did.
What interest me now is the move by Syracuse and Pittsburgh joining the ACC. What will happen tomorrow when the Big12 people meet. Whether the MWC should think about having Utah State and some other basketball teams join the MWC (and Hawaii, of course) so that the conference could be a basketball powerhouse.
P.S. Let’s not get into the “Off with their heads” mentality.
I don’t think fans that are frustrated need an evaluation. Being critical of poor performances does not mean I have given up on my team, nor do I feel it is the end of the world, nor do I think it should be off with anyone’s head. An organization would not be doing its job if weaknesses are not examined and fixed. Our DB’s and Miano, in my opinion, are weaknesses. Maybe the system they run is too complex. I have heard it talked about that the system is very complex and difficult to play. Maybe that needs to be fixed.
I have the right as a fan to convey my frustration. NO WHERE do I ever waiver in my loyalty and support of UH. I am an alum and will always support the green and white. I get disappointed just like anyone else, and am merely expressing my opinion.
I for one think that our Warriors are talented enough to beat ANY team we step on the field with. ANY TEAM. We just need to correct our mistakes.
I guess I should say I support the mostly black, some green, and white.

The players played like they over-anxious to make a big play. Their minds already took off while their bodies stayed behind.

Bad loss. Now we see complaints about staying on the mainland too long, the extra cost, etc. We don’t see these when the Warriors win.
Several areas of concern: 1) Special teams have consistently hurt the team, 2) Lack of effort on the O line. Saw one play/replay where the UNLV defender ran past two UH blockers with only receiving a love tap on his way to Moniz, 3) Moniz wasn’t super sharp but I wonder how much it has to do with the receiving corps? Last year with Salas, Pilares and Bradley they made it look easy. Noticed Stutzman always coming out after a catch and run. Bess & co. weren’t big but they played every snap and blocked fiercely.

Still here as a loyal fan but it’s just disheartening when the Team just doesn’t seem to be very much IN the game in either mind or spirit.
Whatever challenges there are, they all together must figure things out, do what it will take to motivate themselves and bring things back to their advantage.
It’s a lot about WILL, and the will to SUCCEED.
So if I could write to The Team, I’d say:
Dear Team (= players, coaches, and etc.),
If you WANT to succeed, from the outstart waaaaaay before the game is even played, you will do everything you can, go above and beyond to use anything and everything to check everything twice and three times over twice and thrice more to ensure things you can control would most likely give the best outcome possible.
If you cannot think of why you want to do this, then maybe this is not for you.
If it is, perhaps –
. Plan with the end in mind.
. Think strategy, and how you want to achieve your plan and the outcome you want.
. Control what you can.
. Don’t worry about what someone is not doing and concentrate on what you can contribute to the team effort for the good of the team.
. Within the rules, think outside the box to drive the opponent go crazy with confusion.
. Take each aspect of play, whatever that may be, and make them interesting as challenges.
. Break things down and constantly be challenging yourself first then each other to do everything better and better, and then even better after that too.
. Always be thinking “what if ?”
. Out do yourself and be ready to adjust for anything and everything all the time, and make doing that a habit.
. Succeed because you planned well, not just because you might have been lucky.
. Do Constant Evaluation and Adjustment –
– – If you’ve planned well, it will show on the field.
– – If it turns out that you didn’t plan a particular part well but still you want to succeed, then you’d better do what you can to do everything you can to affect what you can.

Personally I’m sick and tired of listening to you.
Last week’s Call the Show: Your words. Muir will be seeing a lot of reps in the UNLV game. Muir will be a starting by season’s end. Muir will be a pro.

In last weeks WAC teleconferences you were quoted as saying that Loyd will be starting in place of Shigematsu.
Loyd didn’t play.
On the same show, like it’s a recurring theme every week for you, you continously and routinely elevate your players and assistants.
My point is for you to stop the caressing already.
There’s no place for it in Warrior football.
Coach Jones never did it. You do.
Coach Jones didn’t have any pom-poms and milk and cookies by his side. You do.
Add to this, your little Santa’s outfit and it doesn’t bold well for this team and the future.
The trail to success is for the players to hear the sound of the whip, have intese practices, and have a head coach breathing down the player’s necks not one, like you, that’s like a pussy figure to them.
Looking back at how your team practiced last week was a joke. Monday the team had no practice, but instead weight lifting and cardio. Mean while all the other teams in the nation had practices, including the Washington team that devoted most of their Monday practice to special teams. UH-nada. Wednesday (?), Thursday and Friday practices, players come out in shorts. Great. This how we get our player ready for battle on Saturdays…brilliantly shameful. I think the Warriors will go on a slide if you continue your Santa ways.
One of the best coaches ever, advocated you practice how you play..true. I see pictures of the players practicing last week, mostly, in shorts. Gees.
The irony is that when the team hits a lull you then step up the intensity. Maybe.

Its still early ladies an Gents they NEED to fix the mistakes IF THEY WANNA WIN THE WAC!!
But I still back coach Mac! I think the offense needs to gel an if they recievers arent getting the job done then put out people that will I like what I saw from Clapp. I’d like to see more of Sampson, an if Pollard doesnt live up to the expectation then they should give some other guy some playing time. June Jones wasnt afraid to bench a player if they werent giving it their all on game day. It’s still early Mo had a off game but all this talk about our D this offseason being the strength the past 2 games they gave up 80 points. Though some of it not all their fault but still all 3 phases need polishing FAST before we go into conference play. I still think we should re-new mac an keep his staff but I think everyone on the roster needs to be re-adjusted I trust the coaches as it is still early but our Recievers other than Miah & Clapp dont seem to be on the same page with Mo! Feels like a re-building year but last year they went 1-2 an people were calling it quits after that lost in Colorado yet went 10-4 correct mistakes an they will do great Go Warriors
Yesterday at 3:15 (HST) I received a call here in Kailua from a former Warrior named Murray Cassidy who played in the late 60’s. He lives in the greater Seattle area but the call was from Boyd Stadium where Murray and a group of former players were seated, awaiting the UNLV game. They called just to keep in touch.
Murray has been a driving force keeping former Warriors across the mainland in contact with each other (they call themselves the Mature Rainbows). It was Murray’s kokua that helped fill Fox Sports Grill prior to the WSU game, the fundraiser at the CAL for the previous UNLV game, the tailgate prior to the Army game, and the post game reception in Boulder. Previously he sent some .jpg’s of a significant number of former Warriors at a private get together prior to this year’s UW game. I hope to receive more photos from the UNLV game and forward them on to ST.
Mahalo to all of the former Warriors from the Pacific Northwest who came out in force for the UW game (as well as Mutter and Letz from that ’73 team who flew in from Chicago). Mahalo to all of the former Warriors who supported the efforts in LV as well.
In my conversations with these former Rainbow Warriors there is a very strong sentiment that is often expressed; We are proud to have been Warrior Football players; We will give our full support , always, to our fellow Warriors who are on the field.

I think the one thing we fans can all agree on is that this loss hurt. We looked bad. Period.

1. Stay on the mainland 11 days and you get tired. Playing football or not.
2. Don’t know why anyone would put UH as 18 point favorites on the road. We lost last time up there. We were down 21-0 in seconds to Washington. We beat a poor Colorado team at home after we got whupped by Tulsa last year. Where’d the optimism come in?
3. You can’t lose two NFL quality recievers and not have it hurt.
4. I’d play the young turks at O-line and get them experience for the future.
5. Some of our dbs get beat way too easy. If Clapp played good off the bench, maybe there’s some other dbs on our bench we can try too?
Just saying that “we did not execute but the other team did” is not the question. The real question is why? This was the 3rd game of the season, but it looked like it was spring practice. Sure injuries did have something to do with their performance, but a good team, with good players and coaches (Boise State) can overcome, especially a team that is 0-2 and will likely be near last in the MWC. There is really no excuse. Why was hopkins covering payne who burnt him before? A good coach would have made changes.

…i hope that the Coaches never do a two-week stay on the mainland ever again…losses to UNLV(2009)…Colorado(2010)…and again UNLV(2011)…bear that out…fatigue and loss of focus contributed to our poor performance (especially evident in the trenches – UNLV dominated us).
…furthermore, missing so much class time really puts the issue of “student-athlete” into question…just saying…does “student” really come first?…or does the $95K we save on travel costs? Didn’t we have players who were academically ineligible for our Bowl last year due to grades?
…$95K equates to about 2 thousand tickets…think that many people will choose to skip the game this week knowing we are 1-2 while falling vs 2-1 rising…?

This is the 2nd week in a row that the defense came out flat. Coach Aranda is responsible for the defensive schemes and adjustments, but as a fan, didn’t see any changes as the game progressed. His “wait and react” defense is not working.

Coach Rolo needs to look at his offensive players more closely in real game time situation. If any player is not up to par, he should be replaced. None of this pro football mentality that if you are on the first team, you deserve to play. That is “bull” and is hurting the offense. Should he have benched Mo earlier in this game?? Yes, and he should have talked to him about why he is being benched. When Graves came in to replace Mo, nothing changed on the offense except for the qb and they drove and scored within minutes. The qb position should not be set in stone because we got too many quality qbs’ on the team that should be given a chance to play.
Remember when we had so much hope in many of these players?

Al posted some ideas on how we might want to consider mixing up the offense…more specifically utilizing the “run” aspect of the RnS.

We ran all sorts of run/read-option, bootlegs, roll-out passes against Colorado…Why not again with UNLV seeing we had OBVIOUS problems with pass protection.
Where was the use of Iosefa and more importantly Jackson (the true runner)?
When Rolo called for the roll-out pass, it seemed to confuse the defense enough to make some decent grabs.
The decision concerning whether to return after the first game or to stay on the continent is not a simple one to make nor is it a decision to be made by the head coach, the Chair of the Department of Athletics nor the chancellor working together collectively – although they do have a significant impact on the decision-makers’ decision. That’s the budget people in the UH System office and the Board of Rrgents.
I’ve had these conversations on several occasions over the past ten years with people not directly connected with UHAD – except through $$$$ issues – dealing with all sports, not just football.
No matter if financial times are tight or the economy is booming, University leadership must establish priorities as to where the money will be spent – and travel costs are definitely not on the TopTen Priority List.
Here is a summary of what I heard from these folks: No matter what sport – baseball, basketball, football, volleyball, softball – the bottom line is the critical issue and that in order to move up into big-time intercollegiate sports, UH must get the larger community to dirrectly support through financial contributions – not just taxes – the costs of running the program.
We are not just talking about Platinum and Diamond-level corporate support here, but contributions from the general public. For example, the adult population here on O`ahu is about 700,000. Were half of this base – 350,000 – were to donate just $20 a year to support UH sports programs, that would raise about $7 million a year.
That could go a long, long way towards reducing the financial impacts of travel costs. That money could also be used to support recruitment costs or summer school scholarships.
Perhaps while in-house discussions are going on concerning shifts/changes in recruiting or play-making, there also needs to be a major, significant evaluation about how Ahahui Koa Anuenue is set up & run. I like the people who work there, but maybe it’s time to revisit how fund-raising support is handled.

I like this Warrior team a lot. They maybe struggling in some areas and tweaking things a bit but I feel there is plenty talent on the field to compete on any given Saturday. I tend to agree with many of you no matter if your opinions be positive or negative. the game was hard to watch and the loss bitter to swollow. but like the team we need to regroup and move on, yea easily said than done I know cause yesterday I was angry. let us not bicker among our selves but band together like we tell the team, example example is what we tsaiko’s got to show. so let it out, have your say then take your one snap, 24 or 48 hrs and return stronger. let’s heal together.

Miah and Legay were grayshirts that first arrived in Spring 2008. At this point I don’t remember which were scholarship players, invited walk-ons, or walk-ons off the street. This information is from the media guide.
144 – that kick had a nice generous tail wind. That was a ‘whoa’ amoungst our group..Nice to see! I wouldn’t expect much of the same deep kicks in HNL. 2000 ft elevation + tail wind could be mis-interpretered as a loaded leg.

The Big East has an exit clause, $5 million and a 27 month notice to vacate. Time for UH and the MWC to be proactive. The Big East, Big 12, ACC and SEC are making changes starting with Texas A&M, Syracuse and Pitt.

Just finished watching the replay on OC12 while catching up on WB posts. I have nothing to add in evaluating the game or the Warriors’ performance that hasn’t already been said here.
I do have one question having to do with the broadcast. When we join the MWC next year, has it been determined yet whose broadcasts we’re going to watch — our own (OC PPV) or the MTN? And particularly when games are played in Honolulu? I didn’t like listening to the commentary of those “homers.” I hope the contract with the MWC doesn’t require us to give up our own announcers for the mainland guys.

One of the highlights of last night for me was the opportunity to sit in front of Garret and listen to his chatter and wide perspective on UH football and the whole NCAA Conference scene while the game was going on. Sudden change is happening everywhere and it isn’t going to stop any time soon.

There wasn’t much chatter.
Attending the Wahine volleyball game and the subsequent Five-0 filming took some, but not all, of the hurt from the UNLV game. The crowd had a great time performing what they do best for the filming.
Nowadays, many students always go into raptures at the mere mention of the coming life of high school or college they will begin. Unfortunately, for most young people, it is not pleasant experience on their first day on campus.
Big mistake for our football team to stay in Las Vegas for so long before the game. Too many distractions, food, slot machines, lack of sleep, the best plan is to ambush the Rebels. Remember the Wahines lost also to Utah State in Las Vegas last year.

The secondary from UNLV and UW seemed to be doing well. However I don’t think Moniz has “it” when it comes to passes beyond 20 yards.
Anyway can go watch the replay and see that he threw uncatchable balls when it came to deeper passes.
Either that or the WR are just not getting to where they need to be.
In any event, deep balls seem to be a thing of the past. Makes it easier for the secondary.

I agree with your assessment of Moniz on the long pass routes. He has never shown the accuracy on long passes for the past two years. That’s why I believe the opposing defenses can just load up in the short-medium zones and go after him. Our receivers’ YAC and our minimal running game suffer when there is very little deep threat.
I am not blaming anyone for the lack of long-term general community financial support for the University of Hawai`i at Manoa’s Department of Athletics. What I am doing is suggest that the University of Hawai`i do what other major PUBLIC universities do across the continent in supporting ALL major sports – create a vibrant and exciting supporters’ environment which is not impacted that much by the win-loss records in particular sports – or even the economy..
Take a look at universities in states like Alabama or Georgia or Arkansas or Idaho – they are not exactly high-end states such as Florida, California, or New York. However, these states are passionate about their basketball, baseball, football, softball team – and even their women’s volleyball teams – and are willing to spend some of their limited incomes on supporting their state universities.
Here in Haiwai`i, most of the time, most of the major sports teams have winning seasons.
Build on that rather.
Currently, there are 19 intercollegiate sports at UH-Manoa. A 20th one is being added next spring. Why not have a TWENTY FOR TWENTY fund-raising drive that includes a free ticket to the donor’s choice or a coupon discount at one of the refreshment stands.

most of the time the tv crews do not pick up enough of the field to tell the rest of the story. there were at least a couple plays where the ball seemingly went to no one. i am pretty sure that on those occasions the qb was thinking deep and receiver short or vice versa. and once left vs right cuts.
billy ray and clapp had nice numbers, with each gettiong 9 rec each and 136 and 85 yds respectfully. they appeared to be in the right spot at the right time. both displayed good hands and made earnest efforts to get the yac.
my concern was that the wr’s dropped too many passes and often appeared to be out of sync with the qb. it could have been vice versa, but, i tend to think that they were reading different books.
the oline continues to be a work in progress. they seem slow afoot when moving laterally. scary is the fact that the depth is being stretched with this group already.
we have to play smarter to be able to play faster.
seems like the slots had double coverage often while the wr’s were on solo flights a lot of the times………but.

Still devastated by yesterday’s loss… But I wanted to make sure you all catch the Rams/Giants game. I’m a Giants fan but I know their secondary is awful right now… Greg Salas is making the start on Monday night. He’s bound to have some great numbers…My hope – Salas puts up big time numbers but lose to the Giants in a shootout. To make it in the NFL, you gotta have an opportunity; Bess did it in Miami. Colt never get a shot in Washington… Lets hope Salas can take advantage of his on monday night….
i think that if the qb got rid of the ball in the 2-3 sec, the oline would be able to progress, but when we have a qb that cannot see over the oline or holds on to the ball, then we have problems and problems we had. the oline is only as good as the qb makes them and right now, the qb ain’t helping them by holding the ball over 3 sec.

Just caught the first 10 minutes of the 3rd Q. Vegas was rushing 4 and getting pressure. Blitzed once and got a sack/turnover. Center snaps looked shakey but we scored on a bad snap.
People always talk about the importance of reps for the receivers and QB. Just as important is the reps the Oline get as a unit. Kinda got the feeling, with what little I saw, that the Oline was shakey, not playing their best as a unit.
Can’t have Moniz looking for the leak in the protection rather than looking down field going through his progressions. Moniz didn’t seem comfortable.
Not saying the Oline was the reason for the Warriors poor execution but to my untrained eyes they were the area that needs the most fixing. The best fix is going to be reps, reps and more reps. It’s fixable.
To me the main reason why we played so poorly as a team, We just weren’t hungry enough.

Its still young in the season but this is exactly what the diference between UH an the other team Warrior this reminds me of a quote about UH from a Boise State player in 06 “Usually you get 21 points up and they’re done and want to go back to the island or whatever.” Thats the problem they have that mindset that UH only PLAYS Hard at Home Now that is exactly how people should think that when they come to the island we will fight hard an defend our stadium. But People should feel that whenever they see Hawai’i on the schedule their gonna be in for WAR! What words I wrote either directly place blame or infer blame on particular individuals? All I did was state how things are done. Frankly, I am not sure that I would want to have it be done any other way – checks & balances are not necessarily a bad thing.
What I was saying both in my original post as well in the followup ones is that Hawai`i citizens and supporters of the entire University of Hawai`i System need to take a different but well-proven approach to underwriting the costs of intercollegiate athletics because these sports have a major & profound way of influencing how much money comes into the schools for nursing education, academic libraries, and theatrical productions – to name just three products of higher education.

With an abbreviated recruiting effort following his hiring, Coach Mack was able to sign only 1 Olinemen in 2008…..Tuiatua Tuiasosopo….who’s no longer on the roster.
UH signed 4 Olinemen (Brett Leonard, Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, Jordan Loeffler, Benson Ma’afala) in 2009 with Ma’afala never joining the team. Unfortunately, UH also missed out when greyshirt walk-on David Garness decided to transfer to City College of San Francisco following Spring 2009 and is now is on scholarship at USC.
Fortunately UH was able to sign 5 Olineman (Sean Shigematsu, Frank Loyd Jr., London Sapolu, David Lefotu, Kody Afusia)….who are all on the team.
Greyshirts Ben Dew & Blake Muir joined the team in Spring 2011, but Thomas Olds was the only Class of 2011 Oline signee to join the team this season.
With Ben Clarke already enrolled at UH and set to join the team in Spring 2012 as a greyshirt, UH will still lose 6 scholie Olinemen (Hansen, Leonard, Lefiti, Laurel, Faaumu, Sapolu) following this 2011 season after already having lost 5 part-time starters (Ginlack, LaCount, Letuli, Tiwanak, Thomas) from the 2010 season…and 4 starters (Estes, Histake, Ieru, Kia) from the 2009 season.
That’s losing 15 Olinemen over 3 seasons…..while bringing in 11 Olinemen over the same period. Shouldn’t be a surprise that there’s a lack of depth…especially quality depth…on Oline when there’s a few injuries.
Even with OL Dustin Adam verbally committed thus far, JMHO that it should be pretty obvious that UH will need to sign at least another 5 or so more Olinemen to shore up its Oline depth. Hopefully some of the local HS kids (Matt Sparks, Pasoni Tasini, McKenzie Togafau, Chris Loyd, etc.) realize this….that they might play sooner than later….to help convince them to sign with UH for this next coming Class of 2012.

Please don’t stop posting. I understand your passion and I’ve done a lot of ranting about the refs on and off the blog in the past. I *agree* with you that there were calls missed/made that went against UH in the game. However, my point is that there were calls missed/made that went against UNLV in the game.
The pass interference calls were pretty consistent to me–they seemed to let the DBs from both sides make contact with the receivers before the ball got there. You are correct that there were times that UNLV could have been called for PI but the refs didn’t throw the flag. I was actually focusing on that during the game and I think I pointed out at least 4 times that UH could have been called for PI or defensive holding that were not called.
Of course, letting the DBs play a little extra aggressive may have been consistent…but it would hurt the team that relied on the pass more. So, even if the refs were 100% consistent on that (and we know that the home team gets more calls/non-calls from the refs), it would be worse for UH’s offense than UNLV’s.
One problem for UH’s depth is that UH had a number of freshman recruits not qualify. Combine that with more JC recruits in the past year or two and we have a case where UH will have a lot of seniors graduating and not as many freshmen and sophomores.
I agree that OL has to be a huge priority for this recruiting class. I think that is the case every year, but UH has a serious depth problem now that makes it doubly important.

To UC Davis football team,
The key to your success is getting in front of Hawaii. Catch a break on the coin toss, take the kickoff to start the game and go on offense first (just like Washington and UNLV did). Put all caution to the wind, exploit the UH defense and go for the home run ball (long plays, quick strikes), like UH’s past two opponents, Washington and UNLV, did in exposing UH’s weaknesses.
UH has history under Coach Mack of not coming from behind. No killer instinct. No rising to the surface. Nothing. Instead the UH team very rarely rises from adversity. A couple of good punches and they’ll stay down. So the key to beating UH is to get out into a quick lead, keep the foot on the pedal and don’t allow them quick strikes on offense.
The UH play calling goes into panic mode once they get behind. Remember that. They’ll pass most of the time. So that should allow your D-line to lick their chops and not worry about a balance attack.
When the UH team gets behind the player get rattled. Players make mistakes. Players mess up. The leadership on the team goes into remission. The coaches are in a trance.
Getting to the QB is key. He will gets rattled when he gets pressured and will make mistakes, overthrows, presses and fumbles.
Another thing. At the start of the game watch the Warrior players do their ceremonial dance and chanting (it’s called the haka) as a motivational tool. Let the UH’s chanting incite your team to greater heights ( I have to think it helped the Washington and UNLV teams watching the UH players do the haka on their turf before the start of the game).
Days leading up to the game give UH all the props, tell them how humbled you are at playing a great a team. And how the players are great, and that their coaching staff is excellent. They will bite the hook. It’s not hard… getting the UH team in becoming complacent. Maybe even telling them that they are 40 point favorites will do the trick.
Just go out there and beat the UH team. You can. Looking at UH’s tendencies is the big key.

I’m sure that everyone has seen the news about the Pac-16 probably being announced soon. Oklahoma will authorize the move at 1pm on Monday and Texas will authorize it at 3pm. It sounds like Texas’ bluff for the ACC might let them keep all the $300 mil from their Longhorn Network plus get an equal share in the regular TV revenue.
The Pac-16 having 9 conference games is too bad, since if they had just 8 games then UH would have a better chance to schedule games with their teams. If they tried to use the Hawaii Exception (like Colorado is doing this season), they will have to play 13 games in the first 13 weeks of the season (like Colorado this season)…

I believe that UH will beat UC-Davis pretty badly, with extra motivation from the UNLV game. I am worried about how many fans will show up for the game.
It was very interesting to see Liz continually take videos, photos, and post/upload/email/text what she recorded during the game. She really takes her recording role seriously, even having to leave her seat to go somewhere to charge her phone so that she could come back to take more photos.

One UH fan way behind our group was pretty unhappy throughout the game, and from the second quarter on he could be heard shouting out derogatory comments towards Mack and Moniz. Things were actually worse when I went to the UH game in Corvallis–a lot more people were shouting negative comments then and a bunch of UH “fans” left before halftime.
If the Pac-16 includes Texas/TT/OU/OSU, then the Big 12 will be down to 5. I really hope that the Big 12/Big East remnants combine to form a conference, as I do not want the Big 12 to use their NCAA basketball money and TV money to get the MWC teams that have already been contacted.
We will – and if we can convince Hawaii 5-0 to film the crowd (all wearing green) for an upcoming episode, we could almost fill the stands.

Although I didn’t watch the game, based on the comments and the box score, it turned out pretty ugly. 18 point favorites and losing is one thing, but losing by that wide a margin was sickening. I almost threw up a kidney when I .found out the final score.

K State, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa State would be good additions to Big East basketball, and the football teams will be competitive.
In BB, the are reasonably close to Marquette, Norte Dame, Cincy, Louisville, Depaul and West Virginia. New York, Jersey and Penn may take another hour of flight time but not much further than going to Austin,Texas.

I don’t think Kansas and K State would want to compete in the MWC, too weak. They would lose their prestige and ranking in basketball, and their rpi would sink to the abyss, just saying.
Similar in stance to Na Wahine volleyball and softball, our conference rpi is weak, either you win the conference to play on in the NCAA, Na Wahine vb is an exception, Na Wahine volleyball can finish second and play on but the other teams are usually on the bubble if they were to finish second to Na Wahine.
The NCAA rarely invites two teams from the WAC in softball, Fresno State has been the exception when they finish second in the WAC
Clowns, I feel your pain. Another embarassing loss that shouldn’t have happened. Everyone who’s emotionally invested in this team is just as frustrated as you. Venting is good, get this loss out of your system then come back with a renewed faith in the team.
My take on the coaches part in the losses. Seems Aranda correctly identified the strenght of both teams’ O was the run. He came up with game plans that would take away the run and make them one dememtional, it worked against CU. What he didn’t count on was the other teams’ OC figured this is exactly the approach he would take. They gamed planned to use the pass to set up the run. Seems they were smart enough not run directly at the tackles until they had UH guessing rather than anticipating. They also knew they could get UH guessing by showing something Aranda never saw on film. Aranda is meticulous in his prep and is adept in identifying most new wrinkles but his weakness seems to be effectively communicating the necessary adjustments on the fly. Seems he needs the quiet of the locker room to get his points across.
What can you say about Rolo other than the Oline let him down.

Billy Ray is coming around and did some good things… Miah, is Miah and when he’s healthy he’ll be a big contributer, but Clapp has shown that he can get open consistently and needs to be in the mix, too.
Bright hasn’t lit up the boards and Pollard has been quiet but effective.

When you think about it…we only came up 20 points short.
I know some are critical of our WR group but I kinda like the mix of Clapp, Stutz, Pollard, Miah…and well jury still out on Bright but he has the potential.
We need to fix the center… got to get those snaps to Moniz clean so that he’s able to make his reads and get the ball out faster. We need to firm up the Oline so that our RBs can become a threat. We gotta be less greedy and play shorter patterns, take care of the ball, and give the Defense a break. Those sweeps, bubble passes, screens, all worked and helped the Warriors move the ball… but anything 12 yards and beyond were usually well covered and the receivers weren’t breaking open clean. Play patient, … get in rhythm … then let all hell loose.
agree that Coach Mack show leaves a lot to be desired. Just a rehash and no new insights that have not already been expressed here. Comes across as a “rah-rah” show and the moderators refrain from asking the harder questions. Could definitely benefit from getting some pointers from the “60 Minutes” school of journalism
#205 Right on the money with your comment. Also IMO a problem that we’ve had consistently since Mack took over. Since 2008 he seems to have shown an alarming pattern of taking run-first QBs and trying to “fit” them in to the RnS offense which has proven to be challenging. In 2008, we struggled mightily with Inoke and Alexander who held the ball too long and then tried to run when it was too late. In 2009 still struggled with Alexander and Moniz holding the ball (missed bowl game). In 2010, struggled against all good teams but won against lower tier teams, mostly because of Salas, Pilares. For me, because this is a passing offense, should have a passer in there who can read the D and get rid of the ball on time. After seeing Austin in the USC game and Shutter in the spring game last year, I am more convinced than ever that we need passers who can stretch the field and get rid of the ball on time. I think things would be different now if Mack would have given Shane a legit shot but he seems to be intent on trying to fit runners into our passing offense…in the end it may be his ultimate downfall. Time will tell.
I think Darius’ turf toe is still affecting him as a receiver. Moniz played with turf toe last season, but he didn’t run routes like receivers do. When you’re running with pain, it affects you. As for catching the ball, maybe he just needs more practice time. He lost practice reps because he was trying to heal that toe. The JUGS might be a solution. Did the generator that was stolen from the field shed get replaced? Didn’t they use that generator to power the JUGS machine?
Will need to see the guys at practice. Won’t be able to go to the Na Koa luncheon tomorrow. 🙁

And the two previous losses on long road trips, one was lost in the final minute. The other one, the Warriors were dominating the first half. And none of the players or coaches use the road as an excuse, plus a “home crowd” of 10K?

If the 2 conferences are looking to merge teams together, why wouldn’t the MWC schools go to the Big 12? The Big 12 could actually pick the teams they wanted for these reasons:
1. Big 12 has earned the NCAA basketball tournament credits to get $19 mil/year while the MWC has earned $5 mil/year. If the Big 12 sticks around, that is a huge amount of money being left behind by the teams that are leaving.
2. Big 12 has the TV contracts and Bowl Games under contract that dwarf what the MWC has. Their TV contracts may be cut, but even in the worst-case scenario the TV money would be 5x more than the MWC’s TV contract. The MWC should get a big raise in TV money in 2016 or 2020 when the TV contract runs out…but that is a long time to wait while the Big 12 already has ESPN and Fox contracts.
3. Exit fees will give the Big 12 leftovers a ton of money to throw around…and money is power in conference realignment. If they each pay the $30 mil, that would be $150 mil in exit fees! Maybe that would be cut to $75 mil, but that is still a lot of money.
The MWC doesn’t have a big TV contract to offer the Big 12 people, has only 1/4 the NCAA basketball money, and doesn’t have $100+ mil in exit fees to seal the deal. If the 5 Big 12 schools stick together, they have all the power when they talk with the MWC–they could get Colorado State, UNLV, and SDSU if they wanted. That is why I’m hoping the Big East and Big 12 get together.
We also should remember that the Big 12 has AQ status and will have it through 2013. None of the current AQ conferences are being judged in the 2008-2011 AQ evaluation period, that is only for conferences that want to become the 7th AQ conference.
The Big 12 already has the contract with the Fiesta Bowl that doesn’t run out for awhile, so the BCS already said that the Big 12’s AQ spot is safe through 2013.

Really though…..unless I’m not seeing it right; there was a significant drop-off in performance/execution from Washington-UNLV…..don’t you agree???? That’s why many fans feel back-to-back road games is a killer. I know when I’m on the road, my mind doesn’t get the proper rest as being home in my own bed…and that affects the body machanics…well, what do I know?, i’m not a doctor….just sayin.

Aloha mctruck, u r rite. We all saw the same thing. Traveling teams always have a disadvantage and that’s why road wins are significant. But performance/execution is also relative. Weak teams make u look good. Good teams make u look bad. UNLV showed way more desire but also this game revealed areas of significant weakness that others may/will exploit-the oline and small dbs vs big receivers. Oh, special teams. What excuses are the coaches and players offering?

Coach Mack clarified some things regarding the past 2 games last night on his show.
I remember reading/hearing that UH was not expecting that UW was going to come out strong and firing on all cylinders and being aggressive and therefore we weren’t prepared.
Last night on the show, Mack said that they knew both UW and UNLV were going to come out the way they did.
So who else is going to Na Koa lunch?
UC-Davis had 412 passing yards in its win over USD.
The other 2 games which were losses seemed much more balanced.
A loss to UCD would be unbearable.

moniz is not on. i was impressed with graves.
o-line needs work, a lot of work.
rb is a problem. iosefa can block, but cant run, jackson can run but cant block!
slots did well. clapp and stuz were the only bright spots. stuz (yac) can run. i was at the game and he and clapp were consistanly open. both have great hands. i noticed clapp got the short outs and stutz got the stuff over the middle in stride.
outside wr did not do that well.
bright slow, lack of hands. could be cause he is hurt?? does not do well in traffic.
pollard drops! but he needs to get more involved in the offense.
the wr screen is stupid. sets everyone up for getting killed.
i would move clapp to left wr

I think UNLV just wasn’t prepared for Graves and I’m not sure they were playing their first team at that point. I’m sure Graves was given a shorter leash with quick developing plays just to keep it safe. No telling what would have happened if he were to have waited longer for the deeper patterns to develop. Hard to compare the two from this past game.
On that point… I’m wondering why Moniz isn’t told to go for those quick developing plays more often and take a chance with YAC rather than always waiting for someone to break open 10-15 yards deep.

Wonder if not having their trip home after UDub and not being able to practise against their service squad at home might affect how team performed? Just wondering since 66 players minus injured, doesn’t seem to provide the necessary preparation opportunity. Think I’d rather see them fly home between road games for classes and preparation for next game. Plz book seats or charter now for next years road games.

Prepaid transportation for next UNLV game should be the rule too. Been an unusual year with Rich also having to hustle around to sell the remaining unpaid for tickets. Thanks guys!
