UH gets JC d-tackle; Elimimian gets WAC award

Defensive tackle Nathan Mageo accepted a UH football scholarship last night.
Mageo played the past two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute.
He was raised in American Samoa, and attended the same high school (Samoana) as Isa‘ako Sopoaga.
Mageo, who is 6 feet 3 and 278 pounds, will enroll at UH in January.
He will participate in spring training.
Mageo is capable of bench pressing 360 pounds and running 40 yards in under 5 seconds.
Mageo said he turned down offers from Arizona, North Carolina State, Kansas State, Baylor, Troy and Southern Methodist.

* * *

Linebacker Solomon Elimimian today was named the Western Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. He had 10 solo tackles and assisted on three others in UH’s victory over Idaho.

* * *

UH created this poster of Davone Bess for the coaches’ offices. Don’t you think it should be made available to the general public?

smu is trying to piggy back all of our recruits.

mageo may be just what the dline coach ordered. we lose many, he could step right in. this also reopens the samoa hotline.

and doesn’t it seem like arizona is also trying to poach all of our recruits as well.

i hope we get to play them in the near future.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Good win on Saturday. No traffic, no crowd, no rain, entertaining ball game. Almost priceless!!? Had to crack up about the fan on the post game radio show accusing Robert K of “aggressive negativism”!?! That’s a new one for the books. At our next Tsaiko Blog Bash we need to give that out as an award! Then, we will need to spend the next 6 beers defining what that is!!???

Good to see the Warriors catching on to the offense. Defense was awesome.
    Go Warriors!

  22. Cheyah! November 24, 2008 6:49 am

Looks like Coach Mack’s philosophy on graduating players and the polynesian atmosphere played a key role in Nathan (and his Dad’s) decision. I’m pretty sure Tuioti had a hand in this as well. Great job by all!
Can’t wait to see him blasting opposing o-lines!

  34. Garret November 24, 2008 7:40 am

Interesting that the computer rankings will push Oklahoma ahead of Texas in the BCS rankings if both win this week. But if Oklahoma loses then Texas Tech will be in the Big 12 championship game. So, it looks like Texas is going to be shut out of the national title picture…

The Sooners can bolster their computer rating by defeating No. 12 Oklahoma State.

Texas, meanwhile, plays 4-7 Texas A&M, a game that will hurt the Longhorns’ strength of schedule.

“I don’t think this week was good news for Texas,” BCS independent analyst Jerry Palm told the Associated Press. “Oklahoma can only get better in all three parts of the formula and Texas can’t.

“I would expect if Oklahoma wins next week they’d finish ahead of Texas.”

“OU still trails the Longhorns in the overall BCS standings because of a decent-sized deficit in the computers, but that will be reduced significantly with a win over Oklahoma State in Stillwater.”

  35. Garret November 24, 2008 7:44 am

    duffer,

Thank you for posting that article–it sounds like ST’s blog gets around 240,000 page views per month, about as much as all the other Advertiser blogs combined. That is impressive…

  36. Cheyah! November 24, 2008 7:47 am

Tuioti is such a great asset to recruiting especially for American Samoa. Parents always look for someone that can relate to them. So its a big positive for them to see another Samoan and probably easier to open up to . Mack should send Tony to Samoa next time they recruit there. If we have competition for a recruit in Samoa, I guarantee that Tuioti would be a bigger sell than some mainland coach.

  37. LizKauai (iPhone) November 24, 2008 7:54 am

    Congrats to Solly!!!
ST- Twitter is how I keep up with Davone Bess. He tweets. 🙂

  38. Garret November 24, 2008 7:58 am

    Cheyah!,

I completely agree with you about the great job that Tony Tuioti is doing! He is making a difference that will benefit the Warriors for now and for future years too.

Unfortunately, there are restrictions on off-campus recruiting for Tony Tuioti because he’s a recruiting coordinator instead of an assistant coach…

  39. wena November 24, 2008 8:01 am

  43. d1島 November 24, 2008 8:09 am

  44. Bulla November 24, 2008 8:10 am

    lava,

Mageo is a ‘diamond in the rough’, and will continue to get stronger with better technique. to have that size and that motor, makes me want to ‘streeeeetch’ the beast in the off season between two Hummers….slowly of course 🙂

whew, what a looooooong weekend. of all games to go flat….that’s football. E. Washington came to play, and we had to look for guys ready to play.

got exciting in the end, but we still lost by a TD. Cameron had 4 int’s, not typical for him.

Ryan played some in the 1st half, but took a shower at half time and was in a sling to isolate his shoulder. he was very upset, because at one point they were 6 for 6 in 3rd down conversions….

we still go to san luis obispo and play Cal Poly, and if we win that, we head to Montana to play them. one game at a time.

SO HAPPY for the Warriors, saw the game on the internet, Defense was smothering….good to Sol getting the award, he is so deserving.

have a good day to all Tsaikos.

  53. Da Punchbowl Kid November 24, 2008 8:21 am

Welcome to the Warriors, Mr. Mageo.

With all of these great recruits and the steady improvement of the team under Coach Mack, I think the Warriors are going to be very tough in coming years. Good job by Coach Tuoiti as well.

When I see the word Twitter I always think of Tweety.
When Tweety Twitters, he often sez, “I tawt I taw a poody tat on Twitter!!!

  54. Stephen Tsai November 24, 2008 8:21 am

You know, every time I hear debates about Kama Bailey, I can think of a better guy UH should have offered: The Beast.
Bailey is very good, but a little perspective. He was offered a chance to join as a walk-on. And at the time, he was recruited, UH had Malcolm Lane and Ryan Mouton as kickoff returners. Also, back at the time, Michael Washington was considered to be a good punt returner (he returned one for a TD last year). And in UH’s planned offense, a bigger back was needed. Of course, in retrospect, Bailey would be an outstanding punt returner, and he could be the shifty back who would succeed Libre.

Congrats to Solly! Congrats to all the Warriors for a great game!

  61. Stretch November 24, 2008 8:32 am

Before the game, one of the Idaho coaches came out and had a real quick chat with him. He told us, “I’m the defensive coordinator and if we do a good job, you can give me a hard time.” Well… I had to be nice to him.

  65. expat November 24, 2008 8:48 am

We had family in town this weekend so no time to comment and barely enough time to watch football.

I switched over from the Boise State game to watch the last few minutes of the Apple Cup. Wow. I said a few weeks ago that one of those teams was going to have to win that game whether they wanted to or not. It looks like UDub really is the biggest disaster of the year. You have to hand it to Wazzu. After a truly inept season it says a lot that they didn’t give up when they were down, had no timeouts, and some 80 yards to drive with less than two minutes to do it in. They are going to come in next week with some enthusiasm.

I could not believe the beating that OK put on Texas Tech.

It was great seeing the Warriors keep the momentum up from the NMSU game. The defense was bizarre. For their two touchdown series Idaho moved the ball at will and pushed the Warrior D around. It was like they could do whatever they wanted. But the rest of the game Idaho just got punished. What’s up with that? I was disappointed that ESPN was picking up the Idaho feed. The announcers were pretty decent I thought but the camera work was mediocre at best.

It was great that Jake Santos got a series. Kudos to McMackin for putting him in. I hope that LWJ gets to play next week. Wazzu is the closest thing to his hometown team.

  66. (Jesse) James November 24, 2008 8:55 am

Congrats to Solly….and a welcome to Nathan from the Warrior family…

…also congrats to ST. Saw the story in yesterday’s Tizer about the web site. It said that the Tizer blogs were averaging 480,000 views a month, with over half going to ST’s Warrior Beat Blog…..awesome….

Great win on Saturday. Now, focus on WSU for this week.

Hope everyone has a fine day….

    Aloha and good morning everyone!

Wait a minute.. wasn’t ST already at practice? LOL…

That StephenTsai link on plurk is a different Stephen Tsai… someone in Taipei with the same name.

Looks like our Defense has pretty much reloaded. Hopefully the new guys will be able to spend spring and/or summer in Hawaii and bond as well as learn the bread and butter plays.

    morning tsaikos,

say it aint so!…we might have to play someone from the MAC? Man i really really REAAALLLY hope not.

I notice in recent times Hawaii has done that…either Pac or Mac. Has the Hawaii Bowl ever considered an agreement with the SEC or Big-12 etc etc before?

  76. SteveM November 24, 2008 9:39 am

    Good morning everyone!
Congrats to Elimimian and a big welcome to Nathan Mago!

At work today…shucks, I had hoped to make a Na Koa lunch and today would have been a good time with Garret here. Anyway, have fun and enjoy!

I’ll be back at lunch time…

  77. MattO November 24, 2008 9:41 am

Question: why was Idaho #6 ejected from the game? Heard earlier that he punched someone? And if so, why wasn’t there a flag?

BTW, great win this weekend – D stepped up big time. Love to see that intense pressure up front. And the offense finally seems to have found a consistent rhythm. Congrats to all!

  78. Stretch November 24, 2008 9:47 am

iwonder – the money that is paid out by the Hawaii Bowl is minimal so most “big” conferences will not send a team over since they would lose money. If the pot was fattened a little, then more conferences would be interested.

  79. Stretch November 24, 2008 9:49 am

Does anyone know if the team is practicing Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) morning??

  80. Garret November 24, 2008 9:51 am

    MattO,

The Big 12 has *9* bowl spots this year and minimal travel expenses to lesser bowls in San Antonio, etc. The bowls they travel to pay *much* more than the Hawaii Bowl. Plus, they don’t really need a 10th bowl…when 2 of the Big 12 teams make BCS bowls they won’t even be able to fill all of their bowl spots (the MAC will take over).

The SEC has *10* bowl spots this year considering that they will have 2 BCS spots. So, they will not be able to fill off of their bowl spots.

With the shortage of bowl-eligible teams, the Hawaii Bowl will be fighting with many other needy bowls who pay more and will cost less to travel to. I really hope that the Hawaii Bowl gets the #4 MAC team instead of the #6 or #7 MAC team!

  81. Garret November 24, 2008 9:53 am

Oops, my post was to iwonderwhytheyhateme and not to MattO!

I’ve got to run to a Clearwire store now (an option for my in-laws) and then will get to the Na Koa lunch. Hope I don’t get lost…this will be my first drive to a new place without a NAV system in a long time.

And now Citigroup is gonna get bailed out. Can I get bailed out, too?

  84. Bulla November 24, 2008 9:59 am

    ST,

#55, mahalo for the props for ryan. it all worked out for the best, he’s in a good place with the other Coach Mac. of course he would have loved to play here with his former team mates, but he is doing well with the other local boys in Ogden Utah.

he’s played all 12 games, started against Portland State and Coach Glanville, has 12 solo tackels, 9 assists, 4 tackle for losses 18 yds., 2 sacks for 13 yds., and 1 forced fumble. not bad considering he draws the double team more often than not. not bad for a True Freshman, and he’s only getting faster and stronger. he can only bench 405, squat 625, and power clean 345, and wishes he was faster than his 4.9, but for his size 6’1 and 275 lbs., he does alright.

his best games were UH, Utah, Montana, and Portland State. it’s all good, Weber State is limping into the playoffs, but hey, co champs for the Big Sky Conference and still playing, gotta like that.

mahalo to all the Tsaikos for the love and prayers for The Beast, he misses home, and he misses everything about Hawaii, but he is taking advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity….playing football at the next level and getting a FREE education.

we’ll definitely do a Cattle Call when he gets back in mid December!

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS

    morning every1

are da 2 LBP recuits coming in for da cincy game. hope so, that would probably be the best environment for them to see.

not gonna be able to witness my 2 alma maters butting heads this weekend, any of you know if the wsu game can be seen at da califronia hotel or anywhere else in downtown LV…

29 pt favorites against a pac10 team, WOW, and we score 20 or more pts and they go down as the worst defensive team ever in terms of pts given up…

  93. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 24, 2008 10:58 am

    stretch, garret

thanks for the info. makes sense. hopefully we can be more competitive in our payouts and attract bigger schools. i would take an ACC or Big-10 over a MAC any day.

buuut first thing is first. lets win out the rest of the season!

    go Warriors!!!!!

  94. Jack Flash November 24, 2008 10:58 am

    Aloha Tsaikos!
Great win for the Warriors against the Vandals. One more and we’re Hawaii Bowl bound! Who wants to see Notre Dame come play instead of a MAC team on Christmas Eve? That would be awesome (and a sellout.)

  95. NorthShoreFan November 24, 2008 10:59 am

    Aloha Tsaikos!
I luv this time of the year with all the recruiting excitment and hopes of next season stirring in the air.
Looks like the coaches are doing a fine job and I think the Warriors are their best recruiters. They play hardnose football and mix that with an exciting offense. How can it be better?
I hope we can get more local guys to represent UH.
Torres looks like a gamer. I was impressed with his heart and toughness. They really raise them well on the NorthShore!
Did UH offer some kids from Waialua or ask to walk on?
    Appreciate any info on this.

  102. J-Dog November 24, 2008 11:36 am

Davone Bess may become the Dolphins #2 receiver since it looks like wideout Greg Camarillo is done for the season.

Rookie wide receiver Davone Bess had a career day (five catches, 87 yards), but might need to grow up fast.

With leading receiver Greg Camarillo scheduled for an MRI Monday on his injured knee, the Dolphins may need Bess to handle a bigger role Sunday at St. Louis.

Bess, who lines up in the team’s three-wide receiver formations, had the most receiving yards by a Dolphins rookie since Dec. 22, 2001, when Chris Chambers had seven catches for 124 yards against New England.

A week ago, Bess dropped two passes against Oakland. But if Camarillo ends up on the sideline, Bess showed glimpses he might be able to fill in.

Four of Bess’ five catches were for first downs.

  103. bb November 24, 2008 11:38 am

    Questions on recruiting….

It’s great we got all these verbals so early. With that said though is the Coaching Staff going to try and “snake” other recruits that have verbally committed to other schools? In other words if a recruit verbally commits to Fresno State (but we had interest in the same recruit) are we going to try and snake the guy away from Fresno? You know..turn the heat on and try and get the kid to change his mind?

And what if we know we have a recruit that “without a shadow of a doubt” will sign on letter of intent day…can his trip/visit be given to another possible recruit instead of wasting the time and money on the kid you know for sure is going to sign with UH?

  104. chawan_cut November 24, 2008 11:48 am

my friends were asking about call the coach. is the $1 heineken special always there? if so, we’ll be there.

  105. BowsForever November 24, 2008 11:49 am

Thanks for the link, LizKauai! They need to get Davone in there too for when the AFC vids come out.

  106. BowsForever November 24, 2008 11:51 am

Also, I can’t help but smile hearing that Mageo turned down Southern Methodist. 😉

$1 Heinekens are always on special at Call the Coach, I believe.

  107. Jack Flash November 24, 2008 11:52 am

Bulla- howzit to you and the family. Sorry to hear about the Weber St. loss. I’m sure your son was frustrated with his injury. I hope he heals up soon! Are you and Mrs. Bulla coming to any of the last 2 Warrior football games?

  110. al November 24, 2008 12:05 pm

bb…my opinion on this is that mack has stated that they are nearly done with recruiting. just waiting on the players that they have offers to that have not yet committed or will not committ. he did say that unlike some schools, he will honor any recruit who has committed regardless of who comes along. he won’t throw anyone under the bus.

mack and tony are smart. they will keep one or two scholies open in case there is a prospect who suddenly appears and he is one that would be hard to pass up.

now if a prospect informs us that he is wavering and is interested in hawaii, it would behoove us to at least listen.

we are just about all but done recruiting already. it is now a matter of maintaining communications with those who have verballed.

  111. NorthShoreFan November 24, 2008 12:14 pm

    letsgowarriors. Mahalo for the info.
Been awhile since any players from the Bulldogs program went D1. Got some good material but lot of them the parents won’t let them play.

  119. duffer November 24, 2008 1:48 pm

When Boise played here last year, their fans gave them a lot of flack for choosing Hawaii instead of staying home to play in their bowl game.

But yes, it is a no-brainer!

  120. Jason November 24, 2008 1:49 pm

Tony Tuioti was the guest speaker at Nā Koa today. And Garret was the special guest. Shrimp curry was served, which we hadn’t had before. Glad to see a full table of Tsai-kos. Now, it’s time for me to study …

whitey said he thought he saw you, but having never meeting you, that would be hard to do! 🙂

  123. Kekoa November 24, 2008 2:33 pm

Tsaiko’s in attendance at Na Koa today along with Jason & Garret included D-1, Mei Ling, Myki, sj-macro, A-House, Me & Pops. ST & RK showed up later to police up the leftovers of Poke, garden salad, Kalua Pig and cabbage, Shrimp Curry, Sticky Chicken okole, and banana creme pie.

Tony T. gave a great breakdown of the key plays executed by both the offense and defense. As usual, there is a lot of extra-curricular activity going on away from the ball that he highlighted. Whenever he did, a roar of laughter would erupt from the near capacity crowd. He also covered Recruiting. A-House cornered him for his autograph to be placed in the A-House book of Fame.

The Tsaiko’s were shut out of the door prize drawings for the first time this season. The prizes are really kinda sparse, and the helmet is the only thing worth winning. I need to do the shopping for them so they can give better stuff away, with more variety.

I heard that fan too; and RK’s response to that was …”That’s a bunch of crock”… that too was priceless!

Speaking of camouflage, BG and his guest were wearing matching military fatigues and when they walked by the bushes they just disappeared.

Here’s another article about why Davone Bess may start this week:

    http://www.miamiherald.com/616/story/785510.html

Instead, though, the likely front-runner to move into the starting role is Davone Bess, a versatile slot receiver who has an understanding of all three wide receiver positions. Bess, who has 24 catches and 275 yards this season, had the best game of his career Sunday.

Four of Bess’ five catches against the Patriots resulted in first downs for Miami, and three of them came during critical third-down situations.

”I’m getting more and more confident each week,” Bess said. “I’m continuing to work hard. Now, I feel like I need to stay ready. I know every position on the field. That goes for all of the receivers, just in case something like this happened. So we’re all prepared.”

If indeed Bess moved into the starting role at wide receiver, he also would replace Camarillo as the team’s primary example of an overachieving player. Bess, a rookie who was passed up in the draft, could suddenly be vaulted onto a different stage.

  167. Jason November 24, 2008 6:41 pm

al: Geez, just talking about tonight. I decided to stop and head over to the SSC.

So how do you like this: I guess since they don’t pass out balloons to the students behind the basket anymore, they pass out rally towels. The entire first row gets a towel … but only the middle six on the second through fourth rows. I guess I need to remember to bring mine every game now, since I’m not getting any new ones. 😛

    That was a good saying:

  175. wafan November 24, 2008 7:25 pm

    al . . .

Thanks! I am guessing that is still an open date.

I hope a game is scheduled — because of the late Labor Day I might finally be able to go to a home game! YAY!

  176. wafan November 24, 2008 7:27 pm

To paraphrase C. Dickens’ Oliver Twist, “Please, Mr. Tsai, may we have those posters?”

  177. BG November 24, 2008 7:29 pm

    ST

Any word on Aaron Kia’s injury…he went limping off the field. And Vaughn Meatoga (he had to go to the locker room). Were they non-events?

BTW. I think Aaron’s father’s name is Malcom. Do you know if the dad is a Waipahu grad? I played football with a Malcom Kia at WHS.

  178. madeinhawaii November 24, 2008 7:30 pm

Isn’t it pretty expensive just to make one (1) poster?

  179. wafan November 24, 2008 7:31 pm

Just watched a program on the Food Channel. I did not know there was a cacao farm on the Big Island. Interesting. I have never heard of the Hawaiian Chocolate Factory.

  180. madeinhawaii November 24, 2008 7:32 pm

    wafan,

Hawaiian cacao is the best. Highest oil percentage and aroma. Going to be bigger than coffee.. just you wait!

  181. wafan November 24, 2008 7:34 pm

    mih . . .

Price depends on the printing process — laser, inkjet, plotter, dye-sublimation, . . .

It was probably more expensive for the computer seat time. HA!

  182. wafan November 24, 2008 7:37 pm

    mih . . .

WOW! The Hawaiian Chocolate Factory (I am guessing that also includes the farm) — do you know how long they have been in operation?

  183. djmitcho November 24, 2008 7:41 pm

I would love that poster of Bess, especially since I’m also a Dol-fan! Can we get a pic of Samson added to that poster?

  184. madeinhawaii November 24, 2008 7:42 pm

    Wafan,

Commercially, no more than a year or two, I think. I know that they have been experimenting with cacao on the big island for a number of years. There was a write up in the tizer about 6 months back, I believe and I think it reported that the Hawaii Cacao was already among the most prized. There might be other farms on Oahu and Kauai as well. You’d think that Molokai and Lanai would look into it as well.

  185. Stephen Tsai November 24, 2008 7:42 pm

    BG:
    Kia’s “tweak” is not serious.
    He should be fine.
    Same with Meatoga.
The concern is with Pilares. I think he aggravated his right foot. I’m sure he’ll play Saturday, but I’m not sure how much he’ll practice this week.

  186. Stephen Tsai November 24, 2008 7:44 pm

By the way, coach Mack gave a shout-out to the Tsai-kos at today’s news conference. He said he reads the blogs, and that the Tsai-kos have done a lot for the program.

  187. A-House November 24, 2008 7:44 pm

    ST:

By all means, Bess’s poster should be made available to the public, for a price. Use this as a money making project for the Athethic Dept.

Say, 50-50% split or 60% UH and 40% Bess. If he so chooses, he can “donate” his share to NaKoa.

  188. BG November 24, 2008 7:45 pm

Anyone going to the Call the Coach tomorrow. Please ask for the rationale for the defense to play so far off the gunners on a punt. Idaho was just blowing by the defensive guys and just going staight to the punt returner unimpeded.

  189. wafan November 24, 2008 7:48 pm

Pilares hurt his foot? I thought it was his knee. Oh dang, this year is pretty brutal on the guys.

That people in the athletic department actually publicly admit they read the WB is a huge leap forward from the recent dark years.

  190. BG November 24, 2008 7:49 pm

    ST

Mahalo’s for the info. Kinda neat that Coach Mac reads the blog. He won’t be surprised when we do the ha’a at Vegas next year. hehehehe

  191. wafan November 24, 2008 7:52 pm

Time to check for cracks in the eye lids!

One day closer to Thanksgiving — and this year there is a lot for which we should be thankful!!!

  192. Garret November 24, 2008 7:56 pm

Did I mention that my mother-in-law is a chef? And that my mother makes her own lau lau and my favorite chicken/mushroom skewer dish? I lost about 20 pounds (doctor’s suggestion) since my doctor’s appointment last year and I think I’m going to gain it back in the 5 days we are in Hawaii!

  193. BG November 24, 2008 7:57 pm

    Wafan

Before the Anniversary party, athletic dept worker bees (just like us!) said that they always read the blog. During the Frazier rumblings, that was how they knew what was going on!!!

  194. A-House November 24, 2008 7:57 pm

    wafan:

Believe that the Hawaii cacao is rated as one of the best worldwide and that all of their production is, at this time, reserved for the ‘high mucka mucka” chefs on the mainland.

The vanilla bean grown on the Big Island is also of very high quality and that is also being “exported” to well renoun chefs on the mainland. No locals sales to date, but correct me if I am wrong.

  195. Garret November 24, 2008 8:01 pm

    Jason,

I wasn’t a special guest at the lunch–I’m proud to be a regular Tsaiko and enjoyed talked story with everyone at our table. Tony Tuioti did a great job as the speaker and the food was as good as advertised. Knowing that the money helps the Warrior program makes it something I won’t pass up whenever I’m in Hawaii during a Na Koa lunch.

  196. BG November 24, 2008 8:01 pm

  197. Garret November 24, 2008 8:02 pm

    Ronnie,

Thank you for the article on Bess and on the Katie update. It is great that she gets so much attention at your home…she loved sleeping in our bed until Lori became allergic after we had her for a year.

    Nuff said.

Bess poster! If no stay printed, a PDF is good! I can get one printed at Kekaha Credit Union !

  199. Garret November 24, 2008 8:05 pm

It was pretty funny to read Ferd’s column and an article in the other paper that went over the Pac-10 chances for the Hawaii Bowl…they basically came to the conclusion I had on Saturday. I wish that Stanford would have beat Cal, but the better team won. It would be great if UCLA could get bowl-eligible, but winning their last 2 games including one against USC makes that highly unlikely.

  200. A-House November 24, 2008 8:06 pm

I don’t like “zebras” who officiate UH games, but after reviewing the game and Lane’s actions in the end zone, kudos to the officials who flagged him for unsportman like conduct.

One official, in particular, kept tell Lane to stop, but Lane kept doing it until flags were thrown. I, for one, would have “kicked him out of the game”. There is no place for such action on the field.

At the NaKoa luncheon, it was revealed that Keala Watson got the “15-yarder” for allegedly punching a ref, but no one saw the punch or who threw it, but Watson was nearby – wrong place at wrong time.

  201. Garret November 24, 2008 8:06 pm

I would love a Bess poster! I would love to see what would happen if ST got a poster and put it up for a blog contest! Or, if they don’t want to print a lot of them then one could be auctioned off with the proceeds going to Na Koa.

  202. BG November 24, 2008 8:08 pm

    Garret

Can you imagine a whole season of T-gates? We’d have you looking like an Akebono clone! Best wishes to you, Lori, the kids, and all the relations…have a fantastic time in paradise.

  203. Garret November 24, 2008 8:09 pm

It looks like there may be a LOT of media coverage for the UH-Cincinnati game…with some of that coverage because Cincinnati’s coach is rumored to be the target of the coaching search for Tennessee. I wonder if that speculation could distract their team and make them vulnerable to a determine Warrior team that will be on a roll after beating Wazzoo for their 3rd straight win.

As rumors continue to swirl about Brian Kelly and Tennesse, Kelly has instructed his lawyers to “keep this stuff off my desk. I don’t want to deal with it. I’m focused on Cincinnati. They call me every day. I won’t return their calls.”

Asked if he would entertain offers from other schools when the season is over, Kelly said, “I don’t know that I would. I don’t even want to get into the speculation that I’ve had to deal with last year and this year. I’m not even dealing with it, so keep it off my desk. We’ll deal with any of this stuff after the season, if in fact I decide that’s what I want to do and right now that’s not what I want to do.”

  204. LizKauai (iPhone) November 24, 2008 8:11 pm

    Hi Coach Mack!
I was so happy that they showed your chest bumps with the Dee when they held that 4th down line! I saw you from the stands and was poking people around me to look and they all thought I was delusional. Way to go! 🙂

  205. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 8:12 pm

    Howzit Gang,

Welcome to the Warrior Nation Nate Mageo…DLine going be big and mean…Mageo, Keli’ikipi, Williams…hmm?

Anybody know the score for the UH-Iowa State BBall game???

  206. A-House November 24, 2008 8:13 pm

D-line/O-line off-season training should include “sumo” training.

Afterall, they don’t just stay stationary and push guys; they are constantly moving, just like sumotoris. Got real good former Hawaii sumotoris who may want to be guest instructors.

And, why or what’s the philosophy behind the O-line dropping back for blocking and giving the D-line a significant advantage? Why not “charge” the D-line? Push the D-line back to give the QB and/or RB freedom to roam. Bet it would take them by surprise and may be very effective.

  207. Garret November 24, 2008 8:14 pm

    BG,

I ate like crazy on the cruise and gained a ton…but I lost it in a few weeks due to a lot of exercise. I think that 8 Tsaiko-gates wouldn’t be worse than a cruise…and since it would be spread out, I would have lots of time to work off each one.

Lots of walking around (especially pushing a stroller around Legoland, Disneyland, and the Wild Animal Park) and Wii Fit (motivates me to do 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and that hula-hoop game really is a good workout) would burn off those Tsaiko-gates! I decided that I had to lose weight but I didn’t want to deprive myself of food, so I just exercise extra.

  208. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 8:15 pm

Davone Bess poster would be nice…

What would be better is a poster of all the Hawaii produced NFL players which will probably never happen but that would be nice too…

Hopefully Travis Laboy and Davone Bess can make it to the Pro-Bowl this year, I keep voting online at NFL.com daily…

But it’s his right foot that’s hurt.
I was walking/limping with him today.

  213. Garret November 24, 2008 8:20 pm

    Liz,

The presentation went very, very well and my company was approached by two large companies for new opportunities. Things should hopefully go well and soon I’ll have to worry about hiring instead of making sure I can find enough work for the people in my company.

The analogy was appreciated by the reporter, and the story was turned in on Friday. It will be out in a few weeks and I cannot wait to see it! I hope that the reporter used the analogy…I couldn’t think of a good one and the other people in my company couldn’t think of any good ones, but the Tsaikos really came up with some good stuff!

  214. Garret November 24, 2008 8:22 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

25-22 UH ahead. My parents and nephew are at the game. I would have been there tonight in one of their seats, but I had to choose the game or the Na Koa lunch and I chose the lunch.

    Garret,
At least what you post is worth the read…very interesting stuff sometimes…

  240. Garret November 24, 2008 9:14 pm

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel had another quote from Bess about possibly taking over the starting WR job.

“I’m always ready when my number is called. This is an opportunity to step up,” said Bess, an undrafted rookie free agent from Hawaii. “Too bad it had to be in this type of situation, losing a key guy. Wherever coaches want me, where they need me, I’m ready to step up.”

  241. Garret November 24, 2008 9:16 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I guess today I was discussing the bowl situation with the Hawaii Bowl, something I’ve been thinking about for awhile and have done some research on. I actually could post a lot more about that, but I don’t want to go into too much fine detail on the issue.

  242. Garret November 24, 2008 9:18 pm

    Miami’s coach talked about Bess.

(On if Davone Bess has showed him that he’s ready to be a starter in this league and if this creates an opportunity for Brandon London and Ernest Wilford) – “There are opportunities for a lot of guys right now out there. I thought Bess did some good things yesterday, I really did. Really, I think he’s done some good things in the last couple two, three weeks. He’s caught the ball in the middle of the field, made some big first downs yesterday; it was good to see him run after the catch. I’m not quite sure, I didn’t really look at it, what our run after catch yards were yesterday, but I bet that was pretty high, too. I’m sure those guys are evaluating that, saying that’s too many yards after the catch, too.”

  243. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 9:19 pm

Bad luck for Camerillo but I’m glad Davone Bess will get a chance to start alongside Ted Ginn Jr.

  244. Garret November 24, 2008 9:20 pm

Another note about Bess. The work ethic he showed at UH (JUGS gun, etc.) has paid off at Miami–learning all the receiver spots took a lot of work and will pay off for him now!

Davone Bess will likely get the first shot, and he’s proven himself to be that quarterback-friendly type of receiver Pennington usually favors. Bess has learned every receiver spot since rookie camp, and the rookies experiences at Hawaii have taught him how to find open zones.

  245. Garret November 24, 2008 9:23 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I agree with what you said in #244. The Palm Beach Post says that there is a big gap between Bess/Ginn and the rest of Miami’s receivers. Remember, one of those receivers Bess is much better than just got a $6 mil bonus from Miami before the season!

Bess, an undrafted rookie, is coming off a career game (five catches, 87 yards). He had never had more than three catches or 50 receiving yards prior to Sunday. He has two catches or less eight times; Camarillo has two catches one time and never less.

The drop-off at WR from Ginn and Bess is incredible.

Brandon London and Ernest Wilford each have one catch this season. Wilford, a five-year veteran with 142 NFL catches, has been inactive seven games.

  246. Garret November 24, 2008 9:25 pm

The Palm Beach Post had another article on Bess. The PBP pointed out that Wilford is making $7 million this season and has just 1 catch this season so far!

“It’s definitely devastating,” he said of Camarillo’s injury. “He took me and some of the younger guys under his wing.

“I’m always ready when my number is called. It’s an opportunity for me to step up.”

  247. Garret November 24, 2008 9:27 pm

Okay, I’m done with the Bess spam now. My kids are asleep and the basketball score is 58-58, so I can turn the TV on now!

  248. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 9:28 pm

    Garret,
We all know Bess is good enough to start in the NFL. I’m sure after this season he will earn himself a bigger paycheck!

  249. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 9:34 pm

I’m hoping Colt Brennan will get a chance to start soon with or without the Skins. Maybe go to the 49ers and get all his receivers there, Bess, Grice-Mullens, Hawthorne, Rivers, and add Chad Owens and Ashley Lelie too… Only in a dream though…

Here’s a satellite picture of the burn area from a couple of weeks ago.
    http://sciencedude.freedomblogging.com/files/2008/11/terrafire.jpg

NASA says the Terra image uses false color, with red indicating vegetation, tan indicating bare ground, gray-blue indicating buildings and paved surfaces, and dark blue indicating water. “The (Triangle Complex) fire burn scar, stretching across the middle of the image, assumes a charcoal color,” NASA says. “Along its southwestern margin, the burn scar intrudes into the curving suburban streets of Yorba Linda and Brea.”

Unfortunately, the picture is part of an article about potential flooding to the burn areas because of a storm that should hit Orange County tomorrow.

Congratulations to Coach Nash and the players! That was an amazing ending to the game. Coach Nash should be proud of the job his team did, and he should be praised for the coaching he did at the end of the game. UH had the ball with 2.6 seconds left and ran a good play, throwing the inbounds pass deep, which set up the foul. If there hadn’t been a foul, UH had options on the play and the ball already past halfcourt.

Contrast that with Iowa State just throwing the ball to a guy right next to the sideline and having him throw up a shot from beyond halfcourt. The better coaching decision resulted in a UH win…kudos to Coach Nash.

So what do you guys think of the Bull Chit System standings? Bama is obvious at numero uno but who do you guys think should be Numero Dos? The candidates are Oklahoma, Florida, and Texas…with USC being a longshot! I think if Texas beats Oklahoma they go or vice versa. Same if Florida beats Alabama in the SEC title game or vice versa they go. USC will need these guys to get upset to make it. Meaning Bama would have to lose to Auburn and Florida. Florida would have to lose to Florida State. Texas A & M would have to beat Texas. But then Texas would have to beat Oklahoma. This confusion is why the stupid BCS has to go…

Only the aid of some tech groups were able to show that the teacher was not at fault. Unfortunately for her, the state refuses to let her get her teaching credential back.

Oops I meant Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma sorry confused myself…

  268. Garret November 24, 2008 9:52 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

Texas already beat Oklahoma on a neutral field–Dallas is halfway between Austin and Norman (where both schools are) and each school had half the stadium for their fans. Texas won by 10 points. Texas and Oklahoma won’t play again since they are in the same division, so only one of them could be in the Big 12 title game.

Florida and Alabama will play each other in the SEC title game unless they are upset before then, so the one of them that runs the table will have earned their title shot.

  269. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 9:53 pm

#266 Army, always playing games sheesh…haha

  270. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 9:54 pm

    Garret,

I know sorry I corrected myself I meant to say Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma…

  271. Garret November 24, 2008 9:56 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

This is how things stand in the Big 12. I expect either Texas or Oklahoma will be in the national title game, probably Oklahoma even though Texas beat them on a neutral field–Oklahoma has NOT been nearly as good away from home (Texas won 3 out of 4, Texas Tech won the last 2 away from Oklahoma).

If Oklahoma loses to Oklahoma State, Texas Tech will be in the Big 12 title game. I cannot imagine Texas Tech making the national title game, so USC would have a chance in that scenario.

If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, then Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma will be in a tie for the Big 12 South title. The tiebreaker will be whoever has the highest BCS ranking! Right now Texas is #2 and Oklahoma is #3, but Oklahoma will get more computer points from beating Oklahoma State than Texas will get from beating Texas A&M. So, Oklahoma will be in the Big 12 title game unless the voters remember that Texas beat them on a neutral field.

  272. madeinhawaii November 24, 2008 9:57 pm

You gotta pray for all the BCS leaders to lose another game and for Boise to go undefeated. That way the argument for a playoff or the dispensing of the entire BCS system is stronger than every. This is the third year in a row that a non-BCS team has qualified as a bowl contender. That means there is greater parity in the field of play and it’s time open the NC doors wider.

  273. duffer November 24, 2008 9:57 pm

    PB,

A little over $200 for the “deluxe” model.

  274. Garret November 24, 2008 9:57 pm

If Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma, then Texas Tech goes to the Big 12 title game…so, as long as USC can stay above Texas Tech in the BCS rankings, they would go to the national title game!

  275. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 9:58 pm

Anyway, time to TAP OUT…if was me I’d say let Utah or Boise State go for the National Championship if either can run the table. Alabama may be undefeated still but I think Florida is rolling right now and might pull the upset in the SEC title game!

  276. Garret November 24, 2008 9:59 pm

If Oregon beats Oregon State, then that opens up a spot in the BCS bowls that BSU might take. Cheer for Oregon!

    Garret..

The fungus for fuel … that’s the real magic mushrooms, eh? That sounds exciting, but we still gotta deal with the fossil fuel type emissions, I bet? Better emissions than no fuel, though.

That 4000 y/o pyramid. That’s kind of mind boggling. Isn’t that before the first self-recorded history of man? Before writing? Pre-petroglyphs?

  280. Garret November 24, 2008 10:03 pm

    madeinhawaii,

The fungus for fuel thing is amazing, especially because growing the fungus in some areas like factories could actually have the fungus *absorb* pollution while it is growing fuel! Growing our fuel while cleaning up the environment?

The pyramid is even crazier because they believe it was for a Queen. That type of stuff just doesn’t show up every day!

  281. Pauoa Boy November 24, 2008 10:05 pm

For me I dunno why but I’d like to see Florida vs. USC in the National Championship game. Floridas O versus USC’s D…

  282. BG November 24, 2008 10:05 pm

At least at WHS they taught me to count beyond 20 with my toes and fingers. Some schools get stuck at 20. I figured it out and his dad could have manufactured Aaron at around 40. Some of my friends from the PI told me that their grandpa’s still making babies at double that age. I did ask them to send me some of that water that they drink…must be the water, huh?

  283. Ralph November 24, 2008 10:05 pm

I don’t think Oklahoma will play texas again this season…Okies play Oklahoma state….all in the south division..numero ono in south between Texas and Oklahoma will play Missouri of the North for the big 12 conference championship, that is if OK beat Ok State and Texas beats Tex AM

  284. Garret November 24, 2008 10:06 pm

I think that the SEC and Big 12 deserve 2 spots in the BCS this year. I do *not* think that the Pac-10 deserves two spots in a year where two non-BCS teams deserve their spots. Oregon State will have won the conference if they beat Oregon…but their early season struggles shouldn’t give them a spot over BSU!

Even worse, the Rose Bowl will have the Pac-10 and Big 10 champions. Penn State already blew out Oregon State…why schedule a rerun?

  285. Garret November 24, 2008 10:08 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

If Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma (it is possible, and Oklahoma has beaten them fairly recently), then I think that USC has a good chance of making it to the national title game. But it would be a shame for a team to not win their conference title to get to play for the national title.

I’m still waiting for the fuel cells that turn hydrogen into electricity to power the car and the only by-product is h2o. And when you get home after work, you plug the car into the home grid to power the house! Even better, use renewable energy to produce the hydrogen.

  287. Garret November 24, 2008 10:13 pm

Update on Tepa. It doesn’t sound that encouraging, and I wouldn’t put him in the solid commit category…

Tepa was an early commitment to Hawaii but then backed off a bit saying he wanted to take his visits before making a final decision.

“I was supposed to take my official visit this weekend to Hawaii but I have to move it,” Tepa said. “We’re still in the playoffs and there’s a chance we could be playing on Saturday so I’m going to take that one later.

“I don’t have any other trip dates set up right now but I know I’ll be visiting Oregon, Colorado and Oregon State. I like UCLA a lot as well but I don’t know if I’ll visit there since it’s so close.”

  288. BG November 24, 2008 10:14 pm

Fun time over…see ya again tomorrow!

  289. Garret November 24, 2008 10:15 pm

    BG,

They actually have the hydrogen fuel cell cars available now, with some limited test cars in use on Southern California roads. The unfortunate thing is that the process to generate the hydrogen causes much more pollution than a regular gas-powered car would generate! They will hopefully improve that soon.

    Al,

At a lot of Universities, a Masters’ degree takes just one year. I don’t know if UH offers all of the classes each year to make it possible to finish in just one year…but the majority of Universities allow it.

  295. Garret November 24, 2008 10:25 pm

At Stanford, you need 15 classes (if they are the standard 3 credits) to get an MS degree. On the quarter system that is 4 classes each regular quarter and 3 in the summer quarter. Or, you can be crazy like me and decide sleep is overrated so you take 7 classes (just about half the degree!) in one quarter.

  296. MeiLing November 24, 2008 10:26 pm

Great poster of Bess. They ought to send one to his Mom in Oakland.

Garret, we knew Davone would excel; now his coach is seeing it. Thanks for finding the quotes.

  297. Garret November 24, 2008 10:28 pm

    Al,

Tepa has been giving hints for awhile that he’s not solid with his UH commit. The positive thing is that Mac and the rest of the coaches have had a LOT of success at recruiting top defensive players, so they will get someone else who wants to be a Warrior. If Tepa waits around too long, he might not have a spot left with the Warriors. However, he might be special enough that they leave one scholarship open for him…

  298. Garret November 24, 2008 10:29 pm

    MeiLing,

I agree that we knew that Davone would excel. He already established himself as a valuable slot receiver and a punt returner, which is what I had hoped would happen this season. If Davone does well in their final regular season games and in the playoffs as a starting receiver, his future contract value will go WAY up.

duffer – thanks, I heard of those flips, they look like cameras rather than camcorders…how much those things run nowadays???

Pauoa Boy — my non-professional buying strategy for a digital camcorder is simple: choose the least expensive one and have a knowledgable sales rep compare it to the next in line. Repeat. When I have no idea what they are saying, I drop one or two models down and punt 🙂

I have seen and used the FLIP camera. Fits in a shirt pocket and inexpensive (under $150 I think). Easy for a elementary school student to use and connect to a computer via USB. BUT– limited zoom, no focus, sensitive to light colors (flourescent vs. daylight), limited record time. Sound pickup is very weak. I am positive one should not try to record sports on it. Very good for casual situations, small karaoke rooms, etc. 🙂

Garret — your last cruise was 5 days so comparing to 8 Tsaiko-Gates is close 🙂 A better comparison might be eating 2 Camellia buffets and a midnight snack every day 😛 …and don’t forget the desserts.

Ralph — if I were looking for a video camera along the lines of the FLIP (rather than a camcorder), I would look at digital cameras in the $150-$250 price range (todays price). I am impressed by the small digital camera LizKauai used to record the videos she took at the karaoke calls and blog party. Good picture and sound and recording on common memory cards. Maybe Liz can tell us the make/model (I forgot).

    PB, SteveM, Duffer, Ronnie . . .

Our school has a couple of those FLIP’s (hey, no pun intended). I would never buy one for my program or for myself. They are terrible!

The software is difficult to install, the sound is bad, fixed focus, minimal zoom, and cannot edit.

Worse, the video can only be played on the computer that has the software. You can plug the FLIP directly into a TV or VCR, though. But, if your intention is to shoot video and then distribute copies it probably will not work for you.

I agree with SteveM. Get a point-and-shoot handheld digital camera with video capability. Just make sure you have a 2+ gig chip.

The D-SLR’s I use in my photography classes have the ability to shoot video.
