Warriors kick off first practice

The Warriors opened training camp yesterday, and the first practice is this afternoon. Here are some key areas:

1. The offensive line: The preference is to be four-deep in training camp, which equates to 20 players. But to address other needs, there are 18 o-linemen in camp, and one of them (Austin Hansen) won’t be available to play until the bowl game. At lesat two might be redshirt candidates. That leaves an area three-deep across, which usually would be sufficient except more than half are sophomores or younger. The first 10 days of camp should bring clarity to the competition at right tackle (Sean Shigematsu or Levi Legay) and left tackle (Clayton Laurel, Jordan Loeffler or Frank Loyd).

2. Receivers: The three new starters — left wideout Darius Bright, left slotback Billy Ray Stutzmann and right slotback Miah Ostrowski — have been in the system for a while. (Ostrowski used to catch passes from Steele Jantz in practice.) Bright is coming off a foot ailment, and Stutzmann has never been a slotback in training camp. `There is time to work on cohesiveness.

3. Coaches: Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda and d-line coach Tony Tuioti returned yesterday from their internships with the Cincinnati Bengals. Mouse Davis also is back. Meanwhile, it appears that Greg McMackin will enter his fourth year without a contract extension. It’s not an immediate concern, but it could be problematic the closer it gets to the 2012 letter-of-intent day.

* * * * *

It’s too bad about Laupepa Letuli suffering from ailments as the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp opens. Letuli has found an ideal situation: The Cowboys prefer their o-linemen to be hefty, and Letuli, now back up to 320, isn’t even considered an overly heavy blocker in their system.

Leahey and Leahey had an excellent show last night. Warrior safety Richard Torres was their guest. It was great interview, young Torres is a quality guy, much like his father, Reggie.

Kanoa did an excellent summary of the current dynamic in play out at Kahuku’s football program. Here’s hoping that their recent problem can be resolved as quickly as possible.

  14. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 9:57 am

I was trying to illustrate how long Ostrowski has been in the program.

By the way, Jantz — a favorite of the A-House family — is now competing for a starting job at Iowa State.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid August 4, 2011 9:57 am

I actually had a dream about Ostrowski and Stutzman last night. All I remember from it is that they are each going to have huge seasons.

  16. Rich2176 August 4, 2011 9:58 am

A contract extension for Mac is a little tough right now. He was hired at a pay rate much, much higher than he would have ever expected, but certainly accepted. Now, JD has to figure out how to tell him we’d love to have you stay, but at a reduced rate. Honestly, I don’t think Mac is in coaching for the money. He’s one of those guys who has the passion for coaching and would probably work for much, much less.

  17. A-House August 4, 2011 9:58 am

I don’t know about others, but why does it take so LONG for UH to complete contracts, present to a coach, gain approval/both sides, and sign the papers? As Penny Marshall, in Laverne & Shirley always says in her Bronx accent, “what’s the problem”?

I dislike the seemingly “poor” effort by those in “power”. Do it or get rid on the coach!

    Is Coach Gib still “hanging”?

All this, IMHO, makes for mistrust among the coaching staff.

  18. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 9:58 am

Sorry for the late posting, but phone was ringing all morning.

    it’s Football time.

  21. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:00 am

    Re: Contracts.

It seems like UH was dilly-dallying at first with Arnold’s contract; now it seems like there’s a negotiation issue. Or so people tell me.

  22. madeinhawaii August 4, 2011 10:01 am

    Rich2176,

They still should have sat down and talked right after the bowl game loss… If the Warriors come out of the gate hungry and win the first three games, Mac will be in an even better position to demand.

  23. PONO August 4, 2011 10:01 am

What is wrong with Letuli? Will it prevent him from playing all training camp?

  24. gigi-hawaii August 4, 2011 10:01 am

AT 320 lbs, is Pepa too heavy for his ankles?

  25. gigi-hawaii August 4, 2011 10:02 am

When attorneys are involved in contract disputes, it is always a negotiation issue.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:03 am

    Rich2176 is correct (as always).

This is indeed a different economic time.

I’m pretty sure Mack would be agreeable to a restructured contract as long as the savings are recycled back into the football program. I don’t think coaches want to take pay cuts to pay off deficits they did not create.

  27. Rich2176 August 4, 2011 10:03 am

MIH – I’m not so sure the word “demand” would apply to his negotiations. I think the only thing he demands is a b@lls out effort from his team and coaches.

  28. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 4, 2011 10:05 am

    Get well SOON, Pepa!

    GO WARRIORS!

  29. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:06 am

    MIH:

I remember how JJ was agreeable to signing a contract extension, but he wanted to do it before the start of the 2007 training camp. That left a five-month window to negotiate. He never received an offer. By the time he received an offer, it was after UH was 12-0. We all know how that story ended.

  30. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 4, 2011 10:07 am

Re Coach contracts- good time to apply the 4 Way Test:

Of the things we think, say or do

    Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

  31. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:08 am

Kind of reminds me of situation with the Mets and shortstop Jose Reyes.

Mets, who may or may not owe Madoff victims up to $1 billion, have been dumping players so they can make Reyes an offer after the season is over. If I were the Mets owners, I would sign Reyes now, then worry about how to pay him later.

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid August 4, 2011 10:08 am

    #26 – Stephen

Both you and Rich are correct. Didn’t Mack say at the chat that he’s more worried about the money his assistants are making, rather than what he’s getting?

  33. wafan August 4, 2011 10:09 am

    Rich . . .

    Mail away!

  34. wafan August 4, 2011 10:10 am

And, thank you, again, for your help!!!

  35. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:11 am

I don’t like contracts based on incentives because: 1) You still have to set aside the money in case the coach meets the incentives, so where’s the savings? 2) It forces administrators to root against a coach to save money. 3) It implies that someone works hard only to meet goals. Incentive pay should be rewards, not carrots.

  36. madeinhawaii August 4, 2011 10:12 am

If Mack and company win the first three games, it will be harder to negotiate any cut in pay… It would make Mack the first UH coach to not only win against a ranked team on the road, but to win against two BCS teams in one season. Take UH to a bowl game and he would be 3 out of 4 in that regards. To bet against that, though is un-Warrior-like. 😉

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:13 am

One of the questions I wanted to ask Mack but didn’t get to was his philosophy on giving playing time to 2nd string/”future players” etc.

During JJ’s time (And now with Mack) when we have a comfortable lead we would send in the reserves. However the game plan seemed to change a bit. A lot more running (maybe to burn the clock or prevent turnovers?) and not as many pass plays that we would normally see during the “normal” course of a game.

I understand it might not be nice to run up the score on any given team. However I’d like to see our 2nd stringers go in with the goal of scoring more TD’s. Real time, real game experience imo.

  38. wafan August 4, 2011 10:13 am

Glad to see there are others who are getting tired of what seems to be game-playing when it comes to contracts at UH.

    Get it right.

    Get it done.

    Get it each time.

How many folks “in charge” have to nod their collective heads in agreement before something gets done? Apparently, those folks have learned little after the JJ debacle.

  39. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:14 am

I remember when everyone thought JJ was overpaid. So when there was no soap in the lockers, some felt that, with his salary, he could afford to pay for the soap or to subsidize his assistants’ pay. But that shouldn’t be the case. Then again, teachers shouldn’t have to use their money to buy school supplies, but they do.

  40. Dennis Halloran August 4, 2011 10:15 am

Stock Market Down 500 points today, so For lunch I went across the street and bought a lotto ticket with 98 million as the prize, I’ll show them!

  41. wafan August 4, 2011 10:16 am

Former coach said he was not running up the score. It was how the offense ran.

  42. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:16 am

So I kinda read that there is a “lag” in season ticket sales.

    How bad is it?

  43. d1shima (Aria'd) August 4, 2011 10:17 am

    Tough break for Pepa.

  44. kawika49 August 4, 2011 10:18 am

#39 Does’nt Gib’s salary get subsidized by external sources? Why can’t a few well heeled individuals get together to guarentee at least 20 pct. of Macs contract?

  45. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:19 am

    #41,

The RnS was designed to run the ball once the score was up high enough?

  46. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:19 am

    IWWTHM

My guess is there will be specific situations for Graves. It’s important that he receives some meaningful game reps this year.

But it’s a long season. There could be injuries or other circumstances that would allow players to gain significant reps.

  47. hawaiian August 4, 2011 10:20 am

    ST,

    Where’s Thor Salanoa?

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:20 am

    #44,

ST mentioned that the Chancellor didn’t want external sources to pay for a portion of his salary.

  49. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:21 am

    kawika49

Actually, outside sources pay for 1.5 assistant coaching positions.

    Arnold’s salary comes from UH.

  50. Garret August 4, 2011 10:21 am

Condolences to Letuli…I was really hoping that his health would hold up because he had a real shot at the NFL if it did.

  51. Ralph August 4, 2011 10:21 am

carrots are incentive pay, rewards are merit pay, and with an already huge deficit, it will be harder to make an offer that is based on income projections.

  52. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:21 am

    #46,

Lets hope there are no injuries though. I think once they hired the new trainer Heffernan, they started to do a lot better in the injuries department. Kudo’s to the S&T program. Whatever he is doing seems to be working well.

  53. d1shima (Aria'd) August 4, 2011 10:22 am

Got a percentage on the emphasis on “unit cohesion” versus giving the new guys a look in the receiver group?

  54. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:23 am

Chancellor wasn’t opposed to having outside sources pay for Mack’s salary. But that wasn’t the condition when he was signed.

When JJ agreed to his contract extension, he requested that outside donors pay for half his salary. Because the donors were anonymous and the money handled through Na Koa, it was never clear how much came from outside donors or if Na Koa subsidized that half of the salary.

  55. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:24 am

The Buff n Blue alums wanted Gibb. I am sure they are paying their fair share into BB booster club or Koa Anuenue.

  56. Ralph August 4, 2011 10:25 am

isn’t Thor an academic issue, waiting for completion of courses and grade check.

  57. Garret August 4, 2011 10:25 am

It is interesting to compare how the different conferences are doing in recruiting in the scout rankings. The SEC and Big 12 are doing really well, the Pac-12 is surprisingly lagging (probably because recruits out West seem to commit later than those in the south), and the WAC is at the bottom. The WAC is at the bottom even with UH/Fresno/Nevada counting for the WAC.

Having Mack’s contract being so close to running out and having all assistant coaches on 1-year contracts cannot be helpful for recruiting. Still, UH needs to work out a deal that is fair to both sides instead of a one-sided deal that is FAR above market value like last time. It should be pointed out that Chris Petersen, Pat Hill, and Chris Ault all recently took pay cuts to extend their contracts…those are the other 3 coaches moving from the WAC to the MWC.

    http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&view=2&yr=2012

  58. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:26 am

I think everybody gets an equal look for the first 10 days. After that, the first- and second-team players will get most of the team reps, while scout units are developed. But look for more non-offensive/defensive starters to earn playing time on special teams.

  59. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:26 am

When JJ came along people said he brought donors like the Maloof brothers (The Palm’s Casino) with him. I don’t if that was true or not.

  60. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:28 am

    Ralph:

I did not see Thor Salanoa on the tentative roster.

Monday, I received the training-camp roster. The names of the 16 players who will join the first day of school were redacted from that list.

  61. Garret August 4, 2011 10:30 am

Buried in this article about how the only WAC bowl next year will now be called the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is a note that the bowl in Boise is trying to beat out the Hawaii Bowl to become the MWC’s last bowl tie-in. However, the Hawaii location (and expense for sending UH to a mainland bowl) would seem to make the Hawaii Bowl an obvious choice. However, the MWC’s commissioner says that the Hawaii Bowl to the MWC is *not* a done deal.

If the Hawaii Bowl stays with the WAC and cannot get UH to play in it anymore, it will die quickly. It would be prudent for the Hawaii Bowl to up their payout before the people with money in Boise (they have a number of tech companies there that are loaded with cash now) do so…the New Mexico Bowl went from the WAC to Pac-12 by increasing its payout, the Hawaii Bowl could do the same if the $$$ was increased by $500k.

Boise State won’t be playing in the bowl game anytime soon, but Bleymaier said there is interest in incorporating the Broncos’ new conference — the Mountain West — into the bowl in the future.

“I think the board would like to see that happen, if it’s possible and obviously I think the community would like to see that, so we’ll have to wait and see how things develop,” Bleymaier said.

The Mountain West is looking to add one more bowl game next year and Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said last week that the Hawaii Bowl likely would be picked over the cold-weather bowl game in Boise.

No, the Maloof brothers were contributors to his foundation, not to the school.

When JJ realized that UH did not own the copyright to the H logo, that’s when he went out and created the eo na toa line. He also got Mike Post to create the sounds they played at games. JJ even paid for the speakers. JJ then offered to give the rights to that logo and music to UH. But when the previous administration did nothing with it for a year, he took it back, and gave it to his foundation.

  63. hawaiian August 4, 2011 10:33 am

    #16-Rich2176

Mac’s extension is tough because of the economy?

I disagree because he has already volunteered to take a pay cut (i believe) and was given a pay cut (due to his “reference to a type of person” during the 2009 WAC Media Conference. I don’t think he’ll get an increase-in-pay or incentive-laden contract…but I do believe he should sign-on for (at least) another 3-years at the same rate he was hired at in 2008…$1.1 million a year! He deserves it, just look at his W-L record and his graduation rates! Mac has greatly improved the quality of this team.

  64. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:33 am

Make HTA the 2nd title sponsor (after sheraton off course) and have them pony up $1M for the prize money.

    Ha ha ha.

  65. d1shima (Aria'd) August 4, 2011 10:34 am

    Garret,

Those companies in BOI may have had a lot of cash last month….

  66. Kevin August 4, 2011 10:34 am

It’s an old way of thinking isn’t it? Some people in Hawaii just cannot understand the concept of investing in success to compete with other programs for quality coaches and some still think incentives and bonuses are BS.

  67. madeinhawaii August 4, 2011 10:34 am

Maybe they’ll make it a condition that the turf be green for the bowl game.

  68. Garret August 4, 2011 10:34 am

The Big East is going from $5 mil/year for their current football TV deal to a much higher number soon. They rejected ESPN’s billion-plus offer and appear in line to get more TV money than the SEC! Sometimes it is nice to be on the market with 3+ bidders and having the previous contract (Pac-12) raise the ceiling on offers…plus, they have teams in huge population areas, covering 6x the population that the MWC has.

For comparison purposes, the SEC gets about $17 mil/school for football+basketball together, where the Big East could get more for just football and their basketball TV contract also will bring in megabucks.

Marinatto and the Big East had an offer on the table from ESPN (their current TV partner in football and basketball) for nearly $11 million per team in May. They turned it down, saying they wanted to wait, which is their option since the current deals won’t expire until the end of the 2013-14 season.

Marinatto sees something in the $19 million-$23 million-per-team range, the kind of deal the Southeastern Conference, Big Ten, and Pac-12 have signed off on in recent months.

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:36 am

oh yeah his foundation. I completely forgot about that. they did a lot of good things with that foundation. i thought the “warriors respond” music and lyrics were really good and inspiring.

too bad UH didn’t promote it further.

i think i still have one of there hats from sheraton bowl auction haha.

  70. d1shima (Aria'd) August 4, 2011 10:37 am

    “equal looks”

    Promise? 😉

  71. Garret August 4, 2011 10:37 am

The WAC’s only bowl game tie-in will be on the blue turf…in a city that belongs to a team that dumped them…that has to hurt.

  72. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:37 am

JJ’s thinking is that a program needs to constantly rebrand to sell more merchandise.

  73. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 10:38 am

    Garret:

There’s supposed to be an announcement in the next week. Not sure if the Humanitarian Bowl is in trouble.

  74. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:39 am

Wow! The rich getting richer?!!?!?! That’s crazy talk!!!…Next, someone is going to tell me we will soon be able to buy pre-sliced bread at the grocery store.

  75. Garret August 4, 2011 10:40 am

The Big East might expand further West? Coast-to-coast?

For the record, there is only FBS football team in Dallas…SMU.

Marinatto didn’t blink when a reporter joked that the Big East could stretch from coast to coast.

“If you would have asked me that question 10 years ago, I would probably have laughed and said, ‘That would never happen,’ ” he said. “But if there is a conference that is called the Big Ten that has 12 schools, what’s wrong with the Big East having a school in Dallas, Texas?

“It’s a brave new world, and we’re willing to push it.”

    http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/college/s_749713.html

  76. Garret August 4, 2011 10:42 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

This is news because if the Big East gets more TV money than the SEC, they could end up with $10 mil/school more than the ACC…which would enable them to snag some of the ACC’s schools and start the conference dominoes to fall in a whole different way than people have been expecting.

  77. Garret August 4, 2011 10:43 am

    ST,

The Humanitarian Bowl is now officially called the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, though they will still have that banquet honoring humanitarians as part of the FIPB festivities.

    Offense sells tickets

  79. Garret August 4, 2011 10:44 am

I remember when JJ’s foundation had to pay the bowl game bonuses for all of the assistant coaches because HF refused to release the money. That was a pretty sad way for HF to make the Athletic Department’s deficit look better.

  80. Slugger August 4, 2011 10:44 am

ST ~ We’ll wait for you. 🙂 See you at practice.

  81. AlaWai August 4, 2011 10:46 am

The athletic departments contract woes are the result of “stone statues” at the campus and the Regents. Teacher salaries and benefits are at a standstill, budgets are frozen, revenues are down and Fed cuts are imminent. The public sector has been silent and the Gov gnome is living up to his rep as a talking head without substance. In short we have what we voted for in the last election. Mac and his staff will see offers from elsewhere just like JJ. Watch for Aranda and Rolo to get courted heavily with some major bucks. Gib’s talent will make him an easy target within the next year as the move to the PW is a step back for MBB. I’m watching for a “white horse”

but don’t see one on the horizon.

  82. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 10:49 am

Woohoo! Hawaii and its Haka just showcased sorta on ESPNU.

  83. Garret August 4, 2011 10:52 am

Incentives tied to things like attendance are feasible and provides an incentive to do the things that bring in fans. Winning of course is the biggest factor for the casual fan to come to Aloha Stadium, but having an incentive tied to attendance would provide an incentive to promote the team more by giving interviews, appearing on TV/radio shows, etc.

Incentives for bowl games are also good because some of the money coming from the bowl game goes to the coaches. Without making a bowl game, that money isn’t there anyway.

Incentives for APR or team GPA may not be tied into money, but I think that stressing academics works nicely for a college team.

UH overpaid in 2008 relative to the market and failed to insert a common clause to protect itself that 99% of the rest of college football has. Since then the peer institutions to UH has had their coaches take *cuts* and UH has been pinching pennies to try to get under the deficit that HF left behind.

  84. SteveM August 4, 2011 10:52 am

    Good morning everyone!

  85. MCB August 4, 2011 10:54 am

ST – with all due respect, I don’t think adminstrators will cheer against a revenue sport because of an incentive-laden contract. I think if the revenue sport does well then more money will be generated to pay for those contracts. That is why non-revenue sports coaches do not typically have incentive-laden contracts.

  86. Pride. August 4, 2011 10:54 am

Maurice Jones-Drew is said to be very unhappy about the Jags cutting Vince Manuwai. Of course I’m very sure that Jones-Drew is a team player, but it isn’t a secret to those in the know in the Jacksonville area that Jones-Drew’s fantasy numbers skyrocketed when Manuwai was in the starting line-up. A lot of Jones-Drew’s success is attributed to the 330 to 340 pound Manuwai.

One of the things that the Raider’s coaches want is for Samson Satele to get his weight up also. With noseguards and DT’s hovering around 320 to 385 pounds, it is said that the NFL interior linemen need to be hefty also.

  87. Garret August 4, 2011 10:56 am

Due to his age, I’m not that worried about other schools trying to outbid UH for Mack. However, I am very, very worried that big-budget schools could come along to easily triple what Rolo and Aranda are making. I think that ST mentioned they were in the $100k to $150k range, where you have USC’s defensive coordinator making $1.5 mil and other coordinators making 5x to 10x what Rolo and Aranda are making.

If UCLA has a bad year, the LA media seems to think that their coaching staff will be let go. If they wanted to get either of UH’s coordinators, it would be hard for UH to hold on to them without major funding increases.

Watching Oregon’s spring game right now. They have this really nice 2-tone artificial FieldTurf.

I think that is what Aloha Stadium is going to look like.

  89. Kevin August 4, 2011 10:56 am

Personally, rebranding “constantly” is what you do when sales lag.

How do sales lag in college sports, especially in Hawaii???

    Losing games.

What is the #1 way to increase sales?

    WIN GAMES.

The rest, to be stressed on is an illusion.

The major rebranding of UH athletics in 2000 was good timing, now, what does it do, if we rebranded again once or twice since 2000 and now? A new logo? New nicknames? More colors/different colors??? Unnecessary and creates more confusion in a culture that does not adapt quickly to change.

What can EVERYONE adapt to QUICKLY???? WINNING.

Just because something isn’t done, doesn’t mean the opposite is automatically better.

The loyal and regular UH fan won’t care, they’ll still come, how does one attract NEW fans effectively without causing confusion on the program’s identity and without crapping all over it’s history??? WINNING.

Re-branding is unnecessary and only causes confusion to new fans. Like I said, change the logo again??? Add more colors again? Eliminate green altogether? Re-branding doesn’t mean new merchandise either, because that’s not re-branding.

  90. Garret August 4, 2011 11:00 am

    Pride,

Vince Manuwai was out of shape and injured, and in this shortened offseason that means an automatic cut for vets.

He suffered a torn tendon in his ankle while working out in Hawaii a few weeks ago and wasn’t ready to play. The Jaguars figured they didn’t have the luxury of waiting for him to heal the way he did last season, when he had a back injury.

Manuwai was expected to return as the starter before he suffered his latest injury. The lockout prevented Manuwai from even informing the Jaguars of the injury, much less getting any treatment.

An MRI he received this week showed he suffered a torn tendon in his ankle. Manuwai said he is starting to get better but he was out of shape from not being able to run and came in weighing 344 pounds.

  91. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 11:01 am

Silver and Black are really nice colors that standout on jerseys etc. But at games I would love to see a sea of green in the stands..white would also be good too.

  92. Garret August 4, 2011 11:02 am

Some Athletic Departments have responded to the constant poaching of their assistant coaches by offering assistants a 2-year deal. That provides some job security for the assistants and protects the school. UH unfortunately has not caught up with that development yet.

  93. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 11:03 am

    Kevin:

    What you say is true.

But if UH were to rebrand three times a year, you’d buy each new item.

Ah, I remember the day I used to have disposable income. That was a long time ago.

  94. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 11:04 am

    ST,

    Did you find your granddaughter?

  95. papajoe2 August 4, 2011 11:05 am

After last season’s 10-4 record, somehow it didn’t seem like such a great season because of the bowl game lost. Oh, it was a very good year, but, I just don’t get that feeling like it was a great year. Aren’t the Warriors in a bowl game losing streak? Maybe with the tight economy (the average homeowner will be paying $500 a month for both water and electric within the next 5 years) and the losing bowl games, that might be a reason that season ticket sales are down. Add to that the rise in gas prices, which effects just about everything in Hawaii, the choices may be to not renew or buy the season tickets. Hopefully a lot of the non season tickets buyers (myself included) will buy PPV. At least its better than not buying anything at all,but who knows what will become of the PPV when the Warriors join the MWC.

  96. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 11:07 am

Yep. I didn’t expect to be on the air this morning. So when they called me, my grand-daughter started wandering. I couldn’t call her because I was on the air. So Bobby kept asking me questions, but I wasn’t really listening.

  97. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 11:08 am

I think most fans have become accustomed to and like the RnS. That being said there are not that many RnS coaches out there with college or NFL experience.

If we wanted to run a Pro Style or West Coast it would be relatively easier to get replacements.

If we really want the RnS as a system to stay here in Hawaii, lets just go ahead and offer Rolovich a 3+ year contract with traditional buyout clauses etc.

I think Norm Chow at UCLA had a 2 year contract.

  98. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 11:08 am

    papajoe2:

    You’re correct.

The beauty of bowls is 32 schools have a chance to win a postseason game. The downside is if you lose, it’s a loooooong offseason.

  99. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 11:11 am

I don’t think UH is opposed to giving football assistants two-year deals. But you know this: Give one group something, everybody wants the same thing. I don’t think UH wants to tie up guaranteed money to assistant coaches in every sport.

  100. Rich2176 August 4, 2011 11:11 am

#63 – I never said anything about the economy. (Although it’s fairly obvious many, many folks have had to cut back – case in point: In 2009 I purchased around 230 tix for the UNLV game. It’s less than half that amount this year.) My point was that JD needs to keep the entire athletic department in the black on a current basis, and not pretend it is balanced like the previous AD applied his ponzi scheme. So, obviously to balance a budget, either some cuts need to be made or figure out a way to increase revenue. Increasing revenue is extremely difficult. Say ticket prices go up 10%. You risk losing 20% of the fans (10% due to economics and 10% to principle). Just like movie theatres. Ticket prices go up every year, and the number of paid admissions go down. Theatre owners complain they’re losing money so they increase the price on popcorn, soda and milk duds. They sell less…

  101. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 4, 2011 11:11 am

I think because of our offenses success I personally feel its RnS first and everything else (WC/AirC/Spread Option) a far second while the triple option/run-heavy a distant third.

    That’s just me though.

  102. Stephen Tsai August 4, 2011 11:11 am

What I find interesting is Nevada’s sports media relations director is on a one-year contract.

Imagine if that happened here. There would be pressure to turn out some nice media guides.

  105. Pride. August 4, 2011 11:23 am

#90 – Garret. It was actually a combination of the weight, injuries, and the money. He came into camp at 344, when he was asked to come in at 335. Nine pounds off is not really that much.

I wasn’t making excuses for Vince. I was merely pointing out that NFL teams like their linemen to be big, in reference to what the bloghost mentioned about the Cowboys liking hefty linemen.

I also wanted to point that out because more than a few times the Dolphins and Raiders mentioned how they wished that Samson Satele was stronnger in the running game at the point of attack. Being stronger at times is not only a function of physical strength, but also includes a player’s weight, or mass.

As Gigi mentioned earlier today, sometimes the more weight you carry, the more you are prone to injury. Although Gigi is not a rocket scientist, she is pretty akamai with some her observations and on the mark in this case.

  106. Kevin August 4, 2011 11:25 am

Well for me and others it wouldn’t matter.

I make a bad example in this case because I still wait for the new UA stuff every year and UH has not “re-branded”.

Now I dunno what it meant when it was said “constant” rebranding was the way to go as what is defined as “constant”? When I hear re-branding, we’re talking about a completely new look, a NEW logo, and maybe even new nicknames.

Pro teams re-brand themselves in that manner, but not every three years.

Now if “constant” truly meant a more periodic and calculated timetable then fine.

Right now, UH athletics doesn’t need a rebranding overhaul like back in 2000. Now if we can square away what to call our programs for sure then I guess that would count, but as far as logo changes or color deletions or additions, there is no need for that at this time.

  107. 808bowler August 4, 2011 11:27 am

  109. tommui August 4, 2011 11:30 am

KEVIN: #106 – I wouldn’t mind UA adding the UH Rainbow on one of their wares.

I still wear – on occasion – an Aloha shirt with the Rainbow logo on the sleeve.

  110. jeezy33 August 4, 2011 11:32 am

ST, any updates with Chris Gant? Has no pic on the UH site. But I am praying he can win one of the slot positions.

  111. clowns nose August 4, 2011 11:37 am

    It doesn’t feel right.

The newspaper was a window to Hawaii… and now it’s closed.

People from all over the nation and the world would navigate to the SA site to see what was going on in our fine state, but not anymore (esp. now once they find out about the paywall).

Editorials, featured artilces, letters to the editor, columnist’s columns, homegrown sports are all closed. The irony is that the bad stuff is open…breaking news about a killing or mugging. That’s the best the SA can do, open part of the window, and show the bad stuff.

Hawaii’s teams, and players, obscured for the most part, as they are isolated on a remote island, are even more obscured now.

It’s not about the subscription price (or paywall), it’s about the people that are driven away. The people that take a peek into the SA , articles about our fine state, and UH athletics, that see the window is closed and turn away. And never to come back.

For the last (…I don’t know exactly) 10 years or so of the SA and HA on-line newspapers– the Hawaii state visitors industry… and UH sport’s teams have been basking in the exposure the online newspapers offered to the nation and the world to see. That was a blessing. Now the exposure is minimized. It doesn’t feel right.

  112. Kevin August 4, 2011 11:38 am

What is not seen at the UH Rainbowtique stores is vintage UH gear.

I dunno who’s paying attention here, but officially licensed UH merchandise sold at stores like Fitted (which specializes in fitted hats and “Defend Hawaii” type shirts) are selling well. Right now their stock is down as it is only put out during the season.

There are a decent about of people my age and a little down to the college students, are preferring VINTAGE UH looking merchandise.

Current H logo with the yellow-green brim and white hats are sold upwards of almost $45.00 and they sold out last year. They even sold the classic Murakami days hat with the plain H on the yellow-green/white hat.

The overall vintage clothing trend for the age demographic of 18-35 is doing well right now and for sports apparel including UH gear, it’s being purchased. Funny thing is it’s being purchased by 20 year olds that do not even attend UH games, BUT they have the H logo with vintage colors on them and Fitted pays their licensing fee to UH athletics annually so there you have it.

  113. Garret August 4, 2011 11:42 am

    Pride,

I agree with your point about how NFL teams want their linemen to be bigger now–the days of OLs like Denver being focused on mobility and keeping their OL lighter seem to be over. When OL get bigger, more injuries can happen since they are carrying more weight on their frame.

I find it a shame that the NFL doesn’t appreciate Samson’s mobility more. Watching him pull on Nate’s runs and on shovel passes was so amazing for me…seeing the way he could move and deliver such force at the edges was something I’ll never forget. All I heard in Oakland and in Miami (after their coaching staff changed, the first staff appreciated Samson) was complaints about how he did against the bigger NTs.

I think that Manuwai would have been at the target weight for the Jags if he hadn’t had his injury. With the shortened training camp time, the timing was all wrong for that injury.

    #111 clown’s nose,

i have a far different perspective.

by closing their window to the nation and globe, the SA has preserved hawaii. they are the most journalistically corrupt newspaper i know. it’s an embarrassment how they slant news for political agenda and favor. no news, as far as the SA is concerned….is good news.

Do you usually get nausea and vomiting with the flu (as opposed to sore throat/sinus/cough)? Sudden onset of nausea/vomiting/fatigue is more symptomatic of Novovirus (Norwalk/gastroenteritis). Maybe look at where/what you ate yesterday.

  142. Garret August 4, 2011 1:46 pm

In addition to the ~$500k/year that Hawaiian is providing, I think that this line in the Star-Advertiser article was very important:

In addition, Hawaiian said it will help fund University of Hawaii travel costs.

Well I was WRONG and I am glad.

A BIG MAHALO TO HAWAIIAN AIRLINES FOR ASSISTING WITH THE TRAVEL COSTS FOR THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM!!

Now is NOT the time for people to get all huhu about advertisements and whatnot for the sake of “principal” or being worried about time being taken up to make advertisement announcements.

The cold truth is that these companies are going to cough up the change that the public won’t and donations can only do so much. If some company is willing to help with UH’s travel costs, then give it to them!!!

SELL SELL SELL!!!!! Beggars cannot be choosers.

  173. Kevin August 4, 2011 2:51 pm

    DPK,

I still watch a lot of WWE and this is the kind of stipulations often involved with their matches.

    “loser leaves town”

    “loser retires”

“winner gains custody of other’s children/wife” – (not making this up)

Sometimes I think sports should take some cues from ‘sports entertainment’. Some issues would be resolved a lot quicker with decisive results. 😆 😆 😆

  174. Kevin August 4, 2011 2:55 pm

Actually, the WAC already borrowed some pro-wrestling/sports-entertainment ideas.

You had the faction of the WAC vs the faction of the MWC in an elimination match. The special guest referee was Boise State.

For the WAC, you had all members pinned and eliminated and only UH, USU, FSU, and UNR remained. For the MWC, ALL members were still in the ring.

THEN, all of a sudden, FSU and UNR climbed out of the ring and grabbed steel chairs and as they were about to attack the MWC with them, they turned around and laid out UH and USU.

Seriously. Not going to develop the flu the same day as exposed. Your doc will laugh at you if that is what you are accusing. But, he will act on your revelation of the dropped temp not being cleaned before re-insertion.

  178. LizKauai (kauaikulolo) August 4, 2011 3:09 pm

gigi- has it been a week since you got your temp crown? Flu takes a few days to hit.

Could it be something you ate?

  184. LizKauai August 4, 2011 3:21 pm

gigi- of course. Cleanliness is of the utmost importance… but if THAT was the cause of your illness, it’s not the flu…

You could have been exposed earlier…

  187. Kevin August 4, 2011 3:28 pm

Speaking of WWE and sports… those skycams that are used for football games in the NFL and NCAA and even for high profile soccer matches, yeah… the XFL started that concept of adding more visual elements a live event.

Shouldn’t be no surprise considering WWE does more live televised (network TV and PPV) and non-televised events than any other entity of it’s kind or similar. WWE’s television production easily rival’s the NFL’s coverage of games and that includes the Super Bowl. Even in the 80’s, WWE produced Wrestlemania 2 in THREE different arena locations LIVE in New York, Chicago, and LA. This was in the 1980’s and to coordinate a live PPV/arena event like that back then would have buried a lot of organizations.

I think that’s why I still watch, for the production value on the scale that they do it. Being at Ford Field for Wrestlemania 23 live was humbling. 80,000+ and the way that the WWE enhanced the fan experience all weekend long puts the recent Super Bowl debacle to shame and the way that they balance the experience for the 80,000 people live in attendance to the over 1 million people watching on PPV is something to respect.

The Sunday edition of the New York Times was (and is) one of the pleasures of life on a lazy Sunday – Magazine, Book, News of the Week, Arts, section.

True, it is liberal leaning but aren’t all papers leaning one way or the other? The NYPost and Daily News are ultra-conservative, for example.

  197. Wes'side Warrior August 4, 2011 3:51 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

Good to see the excitement building in anticipation of this season.

Just went through Open Houses for elementary, middle, and high schools… all in one day. Man, this school district (or cluster, as they call it) has tons of kids!

Weird thing… the mascot for all three schools in this cluster is an eagle… and all with the same color scheme and school motto. Either a great way to save money, or a ploy to unite the whole city to cheer for “The Eagles”, no matter what school they come from. At least they wear the same shade of green as UH does! People were doing double takes all day to see “Property of Hawaii” on my shirt, and an “H” on my hat!

    Go, Warriors!

  198. wafan August 4, 2011 3:51 pm

Lots of airline type promotions can be played up, too!

UHAD will be getting help in travel cost from Hawaiian Air but travel itinerary is funneled through Panda Travel, so who benefits the most, Panda or UHAD?

    Re-NCCA Rules

    This one makes me sick.

During training camp, which starts tomorrow for the Warriors (if I interpreted what I read from pasts blogs), only players on scholarship are allowed to eat at the training table (?). So what that means for duration of the camp (some 3 weeks (?)) 85 of the scholarship players are chowing down on some good food, fruits, vegetables, meats, beverages… some three meals a day while 20 of the players have to fend meals for themselves. Or watch. Or starve. To me this rule makes me angry. I wish there was something that fans could chip in some meal money or something for the 20 players that are restricted from the training table because of NCAA rules. I tell you something…these 20 players practice all day (they are part of the team), exert themselves, and they will be hungry and thirsty, too, and they’re left out. Sad.

  211. jojo ® August 4, 2011 5:12 pm

  212. madeinhawaii August 4, 2011 5:18 pm

  213. madeinhawaii August 4, 2011 5:24 pm

Problem with re-branding insofar as the Warriors are concerned is that only a very small percentage of the proceeds get to the Athletic Department… and nobody really seems to be on top of or in charge of copyright protection.

  224. Kevin August 4, 2011 5:47 pm

Someone must be looking out for the H logo because there was that story a while back where several mainland high schools took the H and used it for their own. One school I remember was Hillcrest High School.

Can’t remember their mascot but their colors were green and white. I think the school is in the midwest or towards the Great Lakes area, can’t remember.

Another school in Alabama uses it and a few more. Those schools didn’t alter the logo or mimmick it, they literally just cut and paste, like Farrington and the Green Bay/U of Georgia “G” or the native american-esque feather for Kahuku akin to the Utah Utes.

Anyway, UH sent a letter notifying them of possible copyright/trademark infringement as long as they are not selling and profiting from selling stuff with that H on top.

Some fans here agreed that the H, in it’s design was mean for us as a culture and a state image. Some felt it was unnecessary to threaten legal action to high schools citing that we could allow them to use it to possibly build a recruiting relationship with them (personally, if this was an intention and verbalized I think the NCAA might have something to say about it).

Legal ownership of the H apparently belongs to the designer and UH athletics pays for the right to have it trademarked as it’s official symbol.

As far as I am concerned:

    1) UH is foolish in NOT doing what is necessary to file ownership of the H.

    2) UH did copyright the H and they can do whatever they want with it, including filing suit if they feel it is necessary to protect our brand.

    3) Someone needs to do what is necessary to capture the legal ownership of the H from the designer ASAP.

Another thing is, I don’t want to hear this idealistic GARBAGE about how since UH doesn’t fully own the logo then they have no right to say who can use it or what because that is complete bullcrap. FACT remains, the H now is established and UH would be stupid NOT to try to protect it’s interest and image for a logo they legally registered as their trademark.

In people’s personal grinds with UH administration, policies, or whatever, things said in spite of anything UH does is hypocritical and two-faced if your intention is to want what is best for the programs you support as a fan.

For some people there is no median or compromise and they are always looking to beat the drum of defiance. Keep fighting your imaginary battles and you get nothing done.

  225. d1shima August 4, 2011 5:49 pm

…and if that no work, tell ’em the Night Marchers coming.

Mickey Mouse vs. Vili…elimination match for UH mascot!

Lights dim and somber music plays. A lone spotlight appears on the entrance stage and Hawaii 78 starts playing.

The Rainbow Warrior makes his return, stands in the middle of the ring as Vili, who just dominated Mickey Mouse stands staring in disbelief.

As the stare-down between The Rainbow Warrior and Vili continues, Joe Moore comes out from underneath the ring to throw salt in Vili’s eyes. Disabled, the Rainbow Warrior executes the Kata Hajime chokehold and renders Vili almost lifeless.

The Rainbow Warrior stands over Vili and walks over to pull the also almost lifeless body of Mickey Mouse over Vili as the referee counts.. 1-2…………….and 3.

    The winner… Mickey Mouse.

Jim Donovan.. stunned, presents the contract to Mickey Mouse to sign to become the offical UH mascot. Rainbow Warrior and Joe Moore helps Mickey to his feet, but right before Mickey Mouse could sign, the Rainbow Warrior takes Mickey Mouse out with a Jacknife Powerbomb and picks up the contract and SIGNS IT HIMSELF.

The Rainbow Warrior and Joe Moore celebrate and embrace as “Aloha Friday” plays over the PA system.

In the audience, Herman Frazier is seen still trying to explain to Kitty Lagaretta what MWC stands for.

  228. Kevin August 4, 2011 5:58 pm

  232. Kevin August 4, 2011 6:05 pm

    BUT!!!!!!!!!!!

Before the Rainbow Warrior and Joe Moore are able to walk out of the arena, a furious Jim Donovan gets on the mic and calls the new mascot and his manager back to the ring.

Donovan flexes his authoritative muscle and demands that the Rainbow Warrior defend his title of UH Mascot against one more opponent.

    (enter Mortal Combat theme)

The SSC ERUPTS WITH CHEERS AS ALAN HACKBARTH SPEEDWALKS DOWN THE AISLE.

The Rainbow Warrior and Joe Moore are both beside themselves with anger calling for the match to be called off. Jim Donovan will not have any of it! He calls for the bell to ring and before the Rainbow Warrior could get his slippers, gold chain, and fanny pack off, Hackbarth catches him off guard with a bicycle kick to the jaw.

The Rainbow Warrior is on his back as Hackbarth ascends to the top rope and executes a Shooting Star Press.

    1-2-3!!!!

PAU. NEW UH MASCOT – ALAN HACKBARTH!!!

Vili and Mickey Mouse have regained their wits and celebrate with Hackbarth and Jim Donovan in the ring as confetti and pyro fill the Stan Sheriff Center.

  287. al August 5, 2011 1:48 am

clown nose…well, i guess…what if a scholie player or twenty forgot his seconds (plate). you know how the plate of food was left out by where the boys hangout after and/or during meals. you know, like they may have forgotten it on the concrete planter wall. someone could, er, pick it up and dispose of it for them. say twenty players did this at every meal…..

    wink, wink.

    I need a training table…

  294. Buffoman August 5, 2011 6:24 am

Read the article where Alex Smith is 27. Nothing about that being “old” but more about his being able to be a good QB. I guess thats the difference between being #1 in the draft and being #whatever (where Colt was drafted). Colt’s 28 and is always referenced as being too “old”, not about whether he can be a good QB or not.

Such is life. Easy to discredit and discard one that there is little or no investment in verses one that was invested in heavily where returns are expected or embarrassment follows the pick.

I’d have to say, Colt’s career as a NFL QB is over. If he wants to play, he needs to see if he can hook up in Canada..and that’s no guarantee, I’d assume.

  295. jojo ® August 5, 2011 6:33 am

No surf, no training table…all I have is me
