New game: Post No. 675 gets the tickets

Maverick won the tickets … then deferred.  Then Wafan, but also deferred. So, post No. 675 gets tickets to tomorrow’s game (Mauka brown section).

* * *

One of American Samoa’s top prospects is visiting UH this weekend.

* * *

Did I mention that Bronson Tiwanak, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound guard/center, is enrolled at UH and joining the Warriors as a walk-on in January? Tiwanak is a 2006 Damien grad who played at Fresno City College in 2006 and 2007.

I think bettah for Rocky to really sit out the rest of the season, so that we can have him 100% for his senior year next year. We really going to need him next year for sure….

    question:

do any of the alternative parking lots sell out?

Sadly i need to arrive late to tomorrows game. I really want to avoid those sites that require a shuttle. I want to park at Radford High School but I dont want to aim my car there only to get turned away.

    Have we reached 488 yet?

  39. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 9:46 am

QB/DB prospect from Samoa..I guess we can use him as a running back if he decide to join the Warriors.

I feel that the offense we have, we need someone with an arm and some good judgement thinking regarding to who and when to throw the ball to that person

  40. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 9:48 am

no offense to any present players but we need to sustain the ability and the athletic of personel players we bring aboard to keep the tradition of our Warrior nation. Best of luck to our Warrior men and lets go to war with the wolfpack

So Nevada comes to town with a vaunted running attack and an experienced O-line and slick QB…It’s going to be a war in the trenches! Can’t wait to see the action.

(J)J – Well after I wake up I get the newspaper from outside, look for the sports section and go straight to the bathroom.

If you mean t-gate then around 10:30 – 11:00. Also, gotta wait for the boss lady from Kauai to call…

  68. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 10:24 am

    Homey,

true on the prospect, but maybe we can put him on a different position that will make an impact to alleviate the problems on other key positions. For example, people complain about a quartrerback that always running outside of the pocket because of pressure, but they dont think if we had good linemans that can sustain the block and key on the person in front of them maybe the quarterback can read his progressions and have time to throw the ball. Im just saying if we have 3 good quarterback and one is a great runner with good hands, well lets put him as a runningback or a slotback…

  69. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 10:36 am

  72. homey ☑ October 24, 2008 10:41 am

Warriorpride – okay, but don’t forget the Warriors have a good recruit from Cali. It’s going to be a shootout next season for the QB’s!

Do you think there will be 2 QB’s in the backfield this game? Is there something up Ron Lee’s sleeve?

  73. homey ☑ October 24, 2008 10:43 am

488 is so far away! Winner may not be decided till Saturday.

  74. what's wrong October 24, 2008 10:47 am

    what’s wrong !?

So, Warriorpride, you are so quick to judge this prospect from Samoa. It appears as if you are stereotyping this young man and not even giving him a chance at what might possibly be his natural position.

    I don’t get it man.

    Have you seen him?
    Have you seen him play?

There have been many Samoan quarterbacks in division one ncaa as well the NFL. So, I don’t get your point or how you even have the audacity to pre-judge this young man.

I happen to know several Samoan qb’s who made it to those levels and the biggest thing that they battled was people who doubted their ability to become a successful quarterback at the highest of levels.

    geeeesh.

This is the 21st century brother.

  75. LizKauai [Believer] October 24, 2008 10:47 am

  77. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 10:51 am

Whats wrong…dont get me wrong…Im not stereotyping my own people. Im samoan myself and I know who this kid is and the family. so please dont make any assumption of me stereotyping. All Im saying is that the coaches will put him in the right place where we need him to play. Hes a great runner with good hands..

Put it this way, hes a tough kid and if the Warrior nation gets this kid it’ll add some spice to the offense or even be a deadly Free Safety…

He’s a fierce person like Leonard peters with some speed and hands and built like Jason Rivers.

    Hi, gang,

How’s beautiful Hawaii today? Hope all’s well in the Homeland.

37,500 tickets sold as of two days ago. Deducting the inevitable no-shows and adding the walk-up sales, we still might get over 40,000 in the stands. That alone would be worth at least three points.

  109. djmitcho October 24, 2008 11:19 am

    HiFlyer,
BSU v. SJSU on the “deuce” at 6pm pacific/ 3pm Hawaii

A little trivia – Neil Lomax plays in JJ’s Foundation Golf Tournament. Knows the islands well and knows this would be a great place for Jack to attend college. I spent a good deal of time speaking w/ Neil this past June. He’s a class act!

Funny when I opened up this blog, he has Murph’s logo for one of the Pigouts up for his post today. I’ve been checking this guy’s blog for NWC/Linfield stuff for gameweek info.

I’m excited about all our verbal commitments but we need to increase the quality of our recruits. Our state’s top players don’t even consider us (ie. Manti Teo) and were getting some 1 star recruits. I’m not unhappy with any of the ’09 recruits but I just hope we can get more talent into the system. Well at least having early verbal commitments is a good start to Mac’s recruiting. This QB/DB should be athletic and would probably be a great fit.

This guy is going to be really good. I don’t think he’s being recruited as a quarterback, though. But, hey, you never know.

    Warriorpride:

Thanks for the insight to the QB/DB recruit from Samoa – general info is good for now, but I bet several Tsaikos are “chomping at the bit” to get more.

And I agree with you 1000% that we ALLl need to look around and see if any student athlete, in our opinion, can help UH in any sport to reach higher levels and bring glory to the University and themselves. And no shame ask family and friends to keep the eye searching.

Hope you can join us at the tailgate tomorrow at Cabana A tomorrow – tremendous fellowship and fun – bunch of crazies – I know that Mrs A-House would like you to sign her book and perhaps acquire more info on the recruit.

And, for Hawainbod – hope you make it too as Mrs A-House has promised to stalk you until you sign her book which is very special to her with so many Tsaikos who have signed and other very noteable public figures close to UH sports.

Rich, check if there is an option at picasa to do this. I use Photobucket and it has the option to reduce file size.

Or, if you are trying to reduce file size before you upload, try Irfanview which you can download from irfanview.com. It’s free and is an excellent image viewer with basic editing tools. One click to downsize, one click to crop, etc.

    Happy B-Day to Robbie…

dj…sorry my Monarch brother…I just saw a show on the Food Network last night about this place in Chicago that sends care packages of all the Chicago known foods…like Vienna Beef Dogs, Malnati’s Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, etc. to expats across the country including Hawaii. They ship overnight for about $70 and you get a bunch of food to feed a family of 4 – 6 people. They said they receive thousands of orders a year. I wonder if that would work for Hawaii people living on the mainland????

Speaking of Monarchs, dj/wafan/KK/gorge/Hoohiki’s brother….DMHS Class of 87 is planning a 40th birthday bash in Vegas the same weekend as the UNLV game (I believe) next year….if you guys can show up for the game there may be a ton of Monarch brothers in town….

    Coach Malloe:

No hurries to come back to work.

  286. Robbie October 24, 2008 2:29 pm

    Lilmermaid,

My fav place is Krazy Karaoke. I’m not one to invest in a home karaoke system. However, I found MySpace karaoke not bad. Just bought a mic for $18 from Best Buy. Download some program app. from MySpace real quick and you’re good to go. Selection is broad in genre but limited in song selection. Might have 1-3 songs for some very popular artists for example. Cool that you can playback and record and send with message to your friends. Also can adjust rhythm, volume of music, etc.

  287. LizKauai [Believer] October 24, 2008 2:34 pm

SteveM- hmmm. boarded in Honolulu, came to Kauai (got seasick crossing the channel at night and then the ship had to lay off on the leeward side off Waimea the next day) and I really don’t remember the rest- #2 son was about 6 mos old and demanded my full attention.

Rich2176: I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager. For example, a picture that was originally 3,024 KB (2816 x 2112) was shrunk down to 221 KB (800 x 600). You open the program, click on Edit Pictures, then Resize. In the drop-down box for Predefined width x height, I use Web – Large.

Probably won’t be around when the magic number hits, but congrats to the winner. If I’m not around, I’ll see you all at the Tsaikogate tomorrow.

Hey, no make pride. confused. Still get damage from the last time he got confused 🙁

  324. Garret October 24, 2008 2:59 pm

Article about Mac in the Reno paper. Great to read! Let us see what the Warriors have to say about Mac.

“He’s totally different than Coach Jones or any other head coach I’ve been around,” said senior linebacker Solomon Elimimian, who at least by name is a king in his own right. “He’s real, real sincere. He means what he says. I have a lot of respect for him.”

  325. Pete Jek October 24, 2008 3:00 pm

UH Total # of tackles (solo & assisted): 84
Leading TACKLERS’ total # of tackles (solo & assisted): 12
Leading Tacklers: Tie b/w Solomon Elimimian & David Veikune, followed by Keao Monteilh with 9, and R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane with 8.

  326. Garret October 24, 2008 3:00 pm

“He’s different,” quarterback Inoke Funaki said. “He’s got a different personality (than Jones). He’s very personable. He tries to get to know everybody on the team as individuals. A lot of guys look to him as a good influence, not only on the football field, but off the field and in school. He’s a good guy.”

  327. LizKauai [Pride] October 24, 2008 3:00 pm

djmitcho- brand X paper had a nice article about Mraz and how he made the video. Google Mraz and Kauai.

  328. homeyPride. October 24, 2008 3:00 pm

XXLiz – I see why ST picked 488 to be the winning number.

  329. Garret October 24, 2008 3:01 pm

“Coach Mack is real concerned about how you’re doing as a person,” said Elimimian, who has 363 career tackles and is four away from the school record. “When you have a conversation with him, it’s not just, ‘How you doin’?’ and then he walks away. He’s a great person.”

  330. Ronnie October 24, 2008 3:01 pm

WOW! We have a homey hybrid!

  331. djmitcho October 24, 2008 3:01 pm

    (j)j,
A food service like the one from Chicago would be neat, but I’m guessing shipping would be crazy expensive.

  332. Garret October 24, 2008 3:01 pm

“He’s the biggest competitor I’ve ever been around,” Elimimian said. “He wants to win. He’ll do anything to win. As players, we respect him for that. He gets fired up during game days. He’s real emotional. His passion for football comes out.”

  333. LizKauai [Pride] October 24, 2008 3:01 pm

homeyPride. den who going drive ???

  334. lilmermaid October 24, 2008 3:02 pm

    SteveM – will do 🙂

  335. Garret October 24, 2008 3:02 pm

This next article is about Nevada’s starting RB. I hope that the Warriors shut him down tomorrow!

The sophomore ran for 122 yards on 17 carries and scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter as Nevada improved to 2-1 in the WAC and 4-3 overall.

For the season Taua has carried the ball 115 times for 736 yards, an average of 6.4 yards per carry. The total yardage ranks him 18th in the NCAA Football Subdivision and his 105.1 average per game leads the WAC.

The Utah State game was the fourth time this season that Taua has rushed for over 100 yards. His 9.4 points per game ties him for the lead on the team in scoring per game with the Wolfpack quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

    488???

  338. Pete Jek October 24, 2008 3:03 pm

Anyone know the line for this game?

  339. Garret October 24, 2008 3:04 pm

Interesting trivia from a different Nevada paper.

Can the Wolf Pack football team actually go to Hawaii and win? Good question. The last time that happened was 1948 with Team of the Century players Stan Heath, Tommy Kalmanir, Ken Sinofsky, Dick Trachok and Scott Beasley, led by coach Joe Sheetketski. Great players. Great coach. Great team. Maybe the greatest team in Pack history. They whipped Hawaii, 73-12, in Honolulu 60 years ago. That team, keep in mind for next week, also beat Fresno State, 53-7. Chris Ault was 2 years old in 1948. Yes, it was a long time ago. But the hunch here is that the Pack will party like it’s 1948 all over again on Saturday night. They might want to score 73 again, just to make sure.

  340. LizKauai [Pride] October 24, 2008 3:04 pm

    oooh. (Jesse) James Mraz….yowza!!!

I like how this high school athlete answered this question!

    8. If you could play football at any college in the country, which one would it be, and why?

University of Hawaii, because every day you’re in paradise.

  345. Ronnie October 24, 2008 3:06 pm

They’re favored by 4 and they expect to put up 73 points? Wait, didn’t they lose to NMSU?

    Whatever!

  346. JessePride October 24, 2008 3:07 pm

    Who’s making Pride confused????

  347. Garret October 24, 2008 3:07 pm

The SMU-Navy game tomorrow has so many UH connections! Here is just one example.

Ken Niumatalolo was a redshirt freshman quarterback at the University of Hawaii in 1983 when he crossed paths with June Jones, then in his first year coaching quarterbacks after his five-year NFL career had ended.

The relationship was brief, as Jones left after that season on a well-traveled road that eventually led to head coaching stints in the NFL and a return to Hawaii as its head coach in 1999. But the impression Jones made on Niumatalolo was lasting.

“I don’t remember much from my freshman year back in ’83, but I do remember he’s a very smart man,” Niumatalolo said of Jones. “He knows his stuff. He’s a very good football coach. You’ve just got to look at his record. He’s done some great things.”

They will meet up again tomorrow in Annapolis when Niumatalolo, in his first season as Navy’s head coach, will face Jones, in his first season as coach at Southern Methodist.

  348. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 3:07 pm

It is too bad that Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada will miss the SMU game…but he’ll be coming back just in time for two huge games for Navy. Playing Notre Dame and Army back-to-back is pretty hard to top when you are at Navy!

Senior Jarod Bryant will start again at quarterback for the Midshipmen. Though Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada did participate in some drills at practice this week, it appears as if he will continue to sit out because of a hamstring injury, and try to return for the last two games against Notre Dame (Nov. 15) and Army (Dec. 6).

Now lets get some Bess updates. It is amazing that Bess has beaten out the WR that Miami gave a $6 mil bonus to before this season.

Wilford and Hagan have missed each of the past two games.

Wide receiver Greg Camarillo is too consistent; Ted Ginn Jr. is showing improvement; Davone Bess has a clear role as a punt returner and third-down slot receiver; and Brandon London accounts for at least 20 plays on special teams.

This is interesting- and produced great results for Colt’s team:
    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/redskins/2008-10-23-sw-cover_N.htm

” Zorn’s fiery outburst took Campbell aback.

“One of the things I screamed in his face was, ‘Don’t you know that we have to trust you?!’ ” Zorn recalls. “I screamed at him because he just homed in on Santana.

“That’s when I said, ‘What are you doing? I’ve got to be able to trust you to come off that guy and go to the next guy who’s open.’ ”

What Zorn calls “a teaching moment” proved an invaluable lesson in shaping Campbell’s impressive emergence, which has keyed Washington’s 5-2 start.

“It’s moments like that time he screamed at me I’ll always remember got me to the next level,” Campbell says. “He told me he was going to be real critical of things I need to improve on because he expects me to be an elite quarterback.

“I was like, ‘Let’s go for it.’

    “He’s coached me super hard.”

Pro Football Talk says that Bess has established himself enough at Miami to earn a roster spot for next season.

For as pleased as they’ve been with the grunt work on the line, a WR corps headlined by Greg Camarillo isn’t going to get the job done. “They love Camarillo’s toughness, but it’s obvious they’re going to be looking for a true No. 1 receiver in the offseason,” the source said. He went on to say that unheralded youngsters Davone Bess and Brandon London have staked legitimate claims to roster spots for next year, but more touted veterans such as Derek Hagan and Ernest Wilford could be conceding their spots on the team in favor of pass catchers offering more promise.

Article about the 6’4″ WR that has been benched while Bess is playing.

Last season, he led the Jaguars with 45 catches for 518 yards and three touchdowns. He was expected to be Miami’s featured receiver after signing a four-year, $13 million deal in March, including $6 million guaranteed.

Wilford’s size and experience are unmatched by the Dolphins’ top three receivers – 6-1 Greg Camarillo, 5-11 Ted Ginn Jr. and 5-10 Davone Bess.

  374. Pete Jek October 24, 2008 3:16 pm

If the UH offense can tough out at least 34 pts. tomorrow, they should be able to get the win. That’s a big IF though.

Warriors’ defense is solid. But, with the assumption that both teams have equal number of TO’s or UH ends up with more, then Nevada will be able to score at least 3 TD’s in the game. Plus FG’s.

It is crucial, therefore, for the UH offense to: #1, try and move the chains; #2, burn as much clock as they can while they do so; #3 put up some points in each drive (TD’s preferred, FG’s acceptable). Also equally important, UH MUST score in the 2nd half. Warriors cannot afford to go cold in the 3rd and 4th Q’s, as they have this season.

ScoutNFLNetwork discusses Minnesota’s QB situation when someone asked who would be the Vikings’ starting QB next season…Colt’s name came up.

One thing is for sure — he’s not currently on the roster. Cardinals QB Kurt Warner is the most talented thrower who will be an undrafted free agent at the end of the season. He could be worth pursuing as long as the Vikings also seek a younger quarterback to develop, perhaps through a trade, such as Washington’s Colt Brennan.

Colt talks about the pranks that his teammates have pulled on him, highlighting the best one.

Perhaps [Jason Taylor’s] best feat was lacing my [Colt Brennan’s] helmet and visor with Vaseline, which meant I spent the practice in a slippery helmet and no visor, because I couldn’t see out of it (the Vaseline took forever to wipe off).

This is the tragedy of bad circumstance that has become Colt Brennan’s life, as the cruel Football Gods put his locker betwixt Jason Taylor and Chris Cooley. It’s a trap.

Article about SJSU facing BSU. Go Coach Tomey!

Here they are again, the feisty home underdog facing a ranked team under the Friday night lights. On national television. With Bowl Championship Series implications.

Is there any reason to think the San Jose State Spartans, who haven’t beaten a ranked team in nearly a decade, won’t endure another gut-wrenching loss?

Is there any reason to believe the Spartans are better equipped to topple No. 13 Boise State than they were two years ago, or four years ago?

And is there any reason to think the Spartans won’t implode in the final minutes, as they did last year against Hawaii?

“We’re building a culture of winning here,” Coach Dick Tomey said. “The guys expect to win, but we have a long way to go if we want to get to Boise State’s level.”

SJSU has come so close to these big wins (I was at last year’s UH-SJSU game and saw them not be able to stop UH’s comeback)…maybe they will breakthrough against BSU?

So close to major upsets of Boise State in 2004 and ’06 and Hawaii in ’07, the Spartans instead took painful paths to defeat — losing in the final seconds, in overtime and in double overtime. (Three-game point total: Ranked opponents 121, SJSU 104).

The Spartans haven’t beaten a top-25 team since they took down No. 9 Texas Christian eight years ago. How can they understand what it takes to win Friday night if none of the players has done it?

“When you’re playing a champion — you have to double-beat them,” Tomey said. “They’ll come back if they’re behind. They’ll make all the plays down the stretch.”

  409. Warriorpride October 24, 2008 3:27 pm

BSU talks about how they approach big road games.

“It’s just about playing hard — you keep playing to the final snap and then look at the scoreboard,” Boise State Coach Chris Petersen said. “I know that sounds very cliché-ish, but that’s the bottom line. You can’t tell them they’ve got to win games. You can’t give them confidence. You just have to earn it and make plays when it matters.”

That’s precisely where SJSU came up short against Boise State in ’06 and Hawaii in ’07.

The Spartans led Boise State in the fourth quarter, then watched the Broncos reel off 11 points down the stretch to remain undefeated with a 23-20 victory.

They led Hawaii by 14 points in the final four minutes, then faltered as Colt Brennan rallied the BCS-bound Warriors to a 42-35 overtime victory.

“It hurts like hell,” Tomey said afterward.

About how things are different this year because SJSU is tops in the WAC.

There is another difference this week, and it has nothing to do with SJSU’s opponent.

In each of the bitter losses, the Spartans played the role of wide-eyed spoiler — hoping to knock their foe out of the BCS race, energize their fan base, impress recruits and gain recognition for the program.

This time, the Spartans (5-2, 3-0) are playing for something far more palpable: They’re playing for the Western Athletic Conference title.

If SJSU ends up winning the WAC, though it may be deserving, the perception will be that the conference is much weaker than the MWC, or even Conference-USA. Though it is true that we have a couple of the worst teams in NCAA-1 football (Idaho & Utah St.), I think that the WAC, collectively, has the best football teams and the most talent among all the non-BCS Conferences. The only argument that can be legitimately made by anyone is that MWC is the better conference. But I don’t think anyone in his/her right mind, can honestly say the other conferences are superior to the WAC.

  569. chawan_cut October 24, 2008 6:02 pm

    Hoohiki,
good point. i think peterson is scooped up after this year. he’ll be offered big bucks by a big school. he’ll leave just like hawkins did. but the question is, if boise has to hire a new coach, will they hire within and keep the trick/motion offense going? or will they hire outside and start from scratch? peterson made the offense go under hawkins and now under his regime. how much does their Off. coordinator do without his input? its kinda just like JJ. i don’t think boise can survive running a normal offense.

  570. kama krab October 24, 2008 6:02 pm

  583. lab rat October 24, 2008 6:22 pm

Peterson inherited a good team and program. How would he do if he had to rebuild from the bottom?

Rodrigues left West Virginia and is taking a beating at Michigan. West Virginia is still doing pretty good without him.

  584. chawan_cut October 24, 2008 6:26 pm

    from the broncos’ site.

Petersen came to Boise State as Dan Hawkins’ offensive coordinator following the 2000 season from Oregon, where he was the wide receivers coach. He joined the Oregon staff in 1995 and immediately helped contribute to a passing attack that ranked among the nation’s elite each of the six seasons he was an assistant.

i don’t recall what type of offense boise ran before that. i think they joined the wac in ’01.

  585. chawan_cut October 24, 2008 6:28 pm

west virginia is surviving on rodriguez’ left behind players. talk about them getting the shaft. not sure how they’ll do once those players leave.
i don’t think michigan was ready for this type of season. that is a different style of offense that they’re ever been used to.

  631. FloridaTed October 24, 2008 7:49 pm

The Washington Jobs are one hell of a challenge, just like SMU, but in Hawaii, JJ had a bunch of smart and tough seniors who believed and played some defense. In 2000, with his own new players, it was like SMU.

If SMU expected JJ to repeat the Hawaii wonder, they were fooling themselves. For some weird reason, he always neglects the defense. No doubt he will turn them around, but if he doesn’t build himself a defense, it will take a lot longer. It is no coincidence that 99 and 07 were his best years, with McMackin as DC.

Boise will promote from within and not much will change. They have a great OC and DC, either would make a good headcoach. It is however, far from a foregone conclusion that Peterson would leave. He’s thrown down serious roots in Boise and if one doesn’t mind the cold, it’s a great place to live, low crime, good quality of life and still a very good economy. He has little kids, that could be a very important consideration. If he makes another BCS bowl, I’m sure he’ll get another fat raise. Whatever the case may be, nobody should expect Boise to go down.

We must come up and get them. McMackin will have this Warrior ship righted in no time. Promoting from within was another one of the correct things UH did since JJ left.

  632. HawaiianbodPride October 24, 2008 7:50 pm

I really think SJSU’s D can play ball with any teams ranked # 8-25. The Nacho brothers are sneaky good and will be playing in the NFL.

BSU crashing hard on the BCS! Great for the WAC

Thanks for congratulatory post. But, you are correct. Sadly, I cannot use them. Shucks.

BUT! Just for kicks I did go to check on airfares leaving tomorrow morning and returning on Sunday afternoon. I definitely cannot use the game tickets.

What is particularly frustrating is that I was really kind of, sort of trying to win one of the autographed Rainbow Dancer posters — did not even get close. So tonight I am goofing around to push up the numbers and, sadly, voila. Darn it.

    FLA Ted,

Have you really watch closely how well SMU runs that offense. I am so impressed with Bo. He, no doubt will be a super star. Lookout for Jones to recruit heavy in the next years.. Dont laugh, but I see a better program than Tex Tech in a few short years if JJ stays. How easy would it be to recruit top talent with a pro NFL team right in your back yard.. They can hire talent DC’s. They have the commitment. I really think JJ wont stay too long, This may be just a lay over – KC Chiefs next stop..

  646. Garret October 24, 2008 8:09 pm

    FloridaTed,

JJ is *not* neglecting the D at SMU. His 2008 recruiting class and his 22 commits for 2009 actually have a *lot* of players on D…I think that 2008 had more players on D than on offense! I was surprised when I looked at his recruit list and saw so many defensive players…but if you look at the stats for SMU’s D in 2007, it makes sense.

    2007 SMU D:
Scoring D: 117th in the country, 39.8 ppg
Total D: 116th in the country, 498.7 ppg
Opponent’s 3rd down conversions: 119th in the country (last), 53.93%

The sad thing is that they recruited very, very poorly in the past so they just don’t have much talent now. Their OL is something like 3 freshmen, 1 guy who used to be a TE until this season, and 1 returning starter. That is why JJ got a ton of OL in 2008 and 2009…aside from the D and some slot receivers, that is where their scholarships went.

  647. HawaiianbodPride October 24, 2008 8:11 pm

Garret – my prayers go out to Katie. It must be hard on the family. Hopefully, the girls will not take it too hard. I’m sorry.

Someone above asked if Bronson Tiwanak would have 3 years to play 2. If he played in 2006 and 2007, and isn’t playing this year, that should mean that he has 2 years to play 2…his eligibility clock started in 2006.

  649. FloridaTed October 24, 2008 8:12 pm

    Postmanke,

We have no disagreement on anything you’ve said. Bo will be a great one and their offense is really starting to click. On the other hand, they have no defense, otherwise they could have 4 wins already.

ST’s favorite judge is upset that her salary is so much less than Simon’s.

“American Idol” former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe recently revealed that Simon Cowell is earning $36 million a year from the show.

It’s not news that Cowell makes some serious coin — he’s been ranked in Forbes — but the approximately $22,000 per minute (according to Lythgoe’s calculations) that Cowell earns has fellow “Idol” judge Paula Abdul especially angry. Rumors put Abdul’s salary at closer to $5 to $8 million per season.

“Paula knew that Simon was getting paid more, but she never imagined it was this much more,” says a source who works with Abdul. “This could really put her in a bad way.”

“She has a lot of concerns with feeling appreciated,” says the source. “First, they bring in another judge (Kara DioGuardi) and now it’s ridiculously obvious that she’s getting pennies compared to Simon. If you thought she had reason to run late to the set now, imagine what the future may hold. I kind of feel for the assistants who are going to be made responsible for getting her on set on time. It’s always a challenge, but now? I don’t want to think about it.”

As for why there’s such a salary discrepancy, Lythgoe told an Australian newspaper it’s because “it is believed (Cowell) brings more to the table.”

  652. Postmanke October 24, 2008 8:17 pm

I really do think JJ has his sights set KC Chiefs in a few years

  653. Garret October 24, 2008 8:18 pm

    HawaiianbodPride,

The girls didn’t mind going to the vet a couple of times today…but after we got home we had to answer questions about the possibility of Katie dying. My girls are too young and innocent to understand death, but they confused when Katie all of a sudden lost the ability to walk.

  654. FloridaTed October 24, 2008 8:22 pm

    Garret,

Like I’ve said earlier, he will turn around SMU, but it will take a couple of years. Hawaii was different in 99. We had some smart and tough seniors who could play, they were just cursed with a lousy coach, they embraced JJ’s style and especially REAL coaching, from the beginning.

  655. Garret October 24, 2008 8:24 pm

I just looked up the list of SMU recruits for 2008 and I was wrong–they had 16 offensive players and 13 defensive players listed, so they did recruit more on offense than D. However, that was skewed because they signed *8* offensive linemen…the OL needed a lot of work.

Roundtrip was a mere $450 to HNL. About half the price I paid for my flight last December. Still, I do not have the extra cash in my discretionary budget to buy them. Of course, if I did not pay for my utilities and car insurance I could afford it. Alas, I got used to electricity and heat during the cold months, and walking to and from school in the rain and dark.

Hey! You want to give me the cash and you can use one of the tickets? HA!

    So sad.

    ok, I’m on a roll…

  668. Garret October 24, 2008 8:42 pm

    FloridaTed,

UH had decent lines and some great playmakers on D in 99. That senior-led group had been through the tough years and were sick of losing, which provided extra motivation. I agree that upgrading the coaching, especially the assistant coaches (many of whom are still at UH), was a big key.

SMU had most of their top defensive and offensive linemen graduate, so they have to play freshmen. Everyone focuses on Bo Mitchell starting as a true freshmen and they don’t notice the other freshmen starting or getting significant time. I knew they would have a hard year, especially on D.

The weird thing is that at UH JJ relied on JC players a lot, especially on D (like the 2006/2007 secondary). I guess he felt like he had to win continually and couldn’t do a full rebuilding effort his last few years…which is partly the reason why UH is having difficulty now. However, the D is senior-led with playmakers all around, so it is no surprise that UH’s D is solid this season.

I think that JJ knew that this year would have been a rebuilding year on offense (though if he stayed I think RGM would still be here), which is why he probably would have started over with Bo Mitchell. However, UH might have gotten Kevin Craft to commit if his recruiting hadn’t been disrupted by the period of time UH didn’t have a coach. SMU doesn’t have nearly as good talent on the OL and their WRs are really new to the system, but Bo threw for 29/39, 365 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs in the last game vs. Houston.

At SMU JJ has truly embraced rebuilding, probably because he had no other choice with the talent they had on their roster. And because he has the security of a 5-year contract. Something like 2/3 of their roster are underclassmen and they are playing very few seniors. The young OL are doing well (41 passing attempts last game with 2 sacks) and the rest of the offense is learning. Their D is slow, undersized, and inexperienced…not a good combination. At least their special teams has improved significantly this year–Gansz has done an amazing job and I wish that he could have been convinced to coach at UH back when that might have been discussed 5 or so years ago.

  686. Garret October 24, 2008 8:55 pm

    Hoohiki,

The way I look at things, JD+Mac is much, much better than HF+JJ. If JJ stayed at UH, HF would have taken credit and the Sugar Bowl money would have insured that HF would get his bonus for “balancing” the budget. Coaches can come and go but the Athletic Director is key for *all* sports to improve…

What stings me is how JJ offered to take a pay cut and have the extra money used for the football program and HF turned it down. How many coaches with a winning record offer to take a pay cut?

  687. wafan October 24, 2008 8:57 pm

I sure hope Hoohiki calls Mr. Tsai right away! Otherwise there will be another contest. Soon it may be post number 4008 will win the tickets.

  692. Postmanke October 24, 2008 9:06 pm

    past article…

Nearly three years ago, the billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens donated $165 million to Oklahoma State’s athletic department so it could remake its facilities into a Shangri-La for Cowboys sports, complete with an indoor practice center and new facilities for baseball, equestrian, soccer, tennis, and track and field. Pickens was so true to his school that he also allowed Oklahoma State to take out a $10 million insurance policy on his life.

..Yeah we can move forward now!

  693. wafan October 24, 2008 9:06 pm

    Okay, game day up here!!!

  694. Hoohiki October 24, 2008 9:06 pm

  695. Stephen Tsai October 24, 2008 9:07 pm

    Yikes. I meant dj.
    Whoops.
    Call me.

  696. Garret October 24, 2008 9:08 pm

    Postmanke,

I agree with your statement. However, donors tend to be more generous when the athletic teams win…

When you say Oklahoma State, you really should just say that Pickens is changing the face of college athletics. He could eventually end up giving their school $500 million or $1 billion…with that type of upgrade for athletics AND academics, they will be a force. This is kind of like what a certain Nike head has done for the University of Oregon…

It would be nice if some rich UH alum was a billionaire and wanted to change the school. However, I check out the list of the richest people in the US and don’t see anyone like that. And I check out the list of the people at the top of the Fortune 500 companies and don’t see anyone like that. So, UH might not be able to rely on a single huge donor and JD will need to get a lot of nice sized donations (Tom Mui helped with a big one already!).

In a perfect world, the Hawaii economy would be booming and donations would be flowing. With the current state of Hawaii’s economy, JD had a very difficult job.

  697. Stephen Tsai October 24, 2008 9:08 pm

And hoohiki is donating an autographed Rainbow Dancer poster to Wafan.

    Good night all!

  700. Garret October 24, 2008 9:10 pm

    Postmanke,

Pickens has actually given a LOT more than that. Unfortunately for him and Oklahoma State, the recent stock market crash has reduced his net worth by over $1 billion and Oklahoma State has been forced to delay some of the construction they were planning to do with his money.

  701. al October 24, 2008 9:11 pm

Pickens lost 300 million two weeks ago in his hedge portfolio when the market dropped 700 points, but that was just 10 per cent of his personal portfolio…

  705. Garret October 24, 2008 9:21 pm

But Pickens’ recently acknowledged that his investments had lost $1 billion this year. That has forced Oklahoma State to hold up the building of an athletic village until Pickens’ economic situation improves.

The NY Times published an article this week about how the economic downturn has hit boosters of college programs hard.

When Aubrey K. McClendon, the chief executive of Chesapeake Energy, recently announced that he had to sell some 32 million shares, or more than 5 percent of the company he founded, worth nearly $600 million, athletic officials at the University of Oklahoma were rattled. The bankruptcy proceedings of another energy company, SemGroup, has brought unwanted attention to the University of Kansas, where the company’s ousted co-founder, Tom Kivisto, had pledged $12 million for a recently opened football complex.

Europe’s lawmakers have decided to NOT require the full-body scanners for airport security. The scanners would do a better job in detecting potential hazards…but it also would reveal all details (including the private parts covered by clothes) of the people being scanned. If it is an optional thing and the quality is only that of a negative from a photograph, I’d choose to go in the full-body scan line since that would move much faster than the other line.

The government is trying out one way to save money that makes a lot of sense to me–employees with Government-issued cell phones will have their landlines removed. Going wireless-only should save a far amount of money, especially considering 11,623 cell phones have been issued to government employees.

  713. Postmanke October 24, 2008 9:26 pm

True on the delay, but that may be because he probably wants to power all his facilities with a on campus wind farm.

Nonetheless, it is not affecting football team. they are threatening as a possible National Championship team! They are already realizing Pickens’s vision. Amazing what donors can do for a program. It’s Boone time at Ok St.

JJ was brought over with donor money. I think we can do the same and JD, as good as he is will do just that in the future. We dont need a multi billionaire. He’ll get the donors.

Long Beach Poly won big today.

Fennell completed seven of 11 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, both of them to Jordan Johnson, as Poly used quick drives and big plays to take a 34-7 win over Wilson at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.

Poly, claiming its 76th consecutive league victory dating to 1994, is now 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in Moore League play.

GARRET:If some of those folks, like Pickens, had created a charitable trust and transferred some of his stocks over, he could have gotten a sizable tax deduction, the stock donated would have been what the market value was at the time of the donation (and not what he bought it for) and he could be getting the dividends during his lifetime!

  720. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 24, 2008 9:43 pm

Kymry! YOU are the bomb! I think those at the table who just met you were blown away by your expressions of love and support for the Warriors and for Colt and crew!

Click on my name for the pix.

  721. Garret October 24, 2008 9:45 pm

    Tom Mui,

I think that Pickens didn’t care about getting the dividends. I hope that he did things to maximize his gift and shield himself from taxes (so that he could give even more later)…but he might have just told Oklahoma State to take his money.

  722. Garret October 24, 2008 9:48 pm

Good night everyone. I won’t be on the blog much tomorrow since we have gymnastics class in the morning, party in the afternoon, and Legoland at night. I’m glad that the UH game doesn’t start until after my kids will be asleep!

  723. Postmanke October 24, 2008 9:49 pm

    Article:

Fox 31 reported Friday the NFL has had a “rash” of positive tests under the league’s policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances.

Citing a “highly-placed NFL source,” the station reported that there have been as many as 10 positive tests, resulting from players taking water pills in an effort to lose weight.

Rumor is that Jason Campbell is possibly one of the ten. Playing time get nearer for Colt?

  724. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 24, 2008 9:57 pm

Hawaii stands to benefit a million times over – more than any other state, imho, just by being the embodiment of aloha in the world. If our worry over economics brings us down to the dregs of human behavior, every person for himself- we will indeed have much to worry about.

If, however, Hawaii pulls together with aloha and does what it can do best- trust Ke Akua- take care- malama- be generous with what it has- share, and never lose the positive attitude, the blessings will flow from far and near.

There are still many people in this world that are looking for something worthy to invest in or donate to. Hawaii has more than a local or regional appeal.

As we embrace people from far and near, so will the blessings flow.

  725. Postmanke October 24, 2008 9:58 pm

The case with Pickens and the University is that he was tired of losing and wanted a National Championship team with Ok St. Almost everything involving a major sport with the university he has a strong say in.. He basically is calling the shots and the AD is basically his puppet.

    i.e. firing of Sean Sutton

Mahalo my friend! We’ll encourage those that are heading in early from the t-gate to stop by. Perhaps some Tsai-kos could meet up with you.

Awesome! Keep up the good work.

    Quick question:

Does the band already play for the team as they disembark the bus at the stadium? If not, could they?

Not sure if you read past posts but, I did hear you guys jam some new cadences at the Spring Green and Black game. That was awesome. Hopefully it could be worked into the bands’ repertoire.

  763. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 4:38 am

    hoohiki,
is that your name because that’s where you live?
    that’s a street in PC….

  764. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 4:43 am

    addahknowjoe,
if things are still the same as when i was in band, they are in the tunnel eating dinner at the time when the teams are walking down the tunnel. the drumline must eat a short dinner and then head out to play around the stadium.
i kinda like that idea. kinda like usc. i was also at a seahawk game the other week and they have a drumline that does the same too. their name was “Blue Thunder” like that airwolf look a like helicopter.
i also liked that the Seattle fans has taken the whole “12th Man” thing to heart. they sell jerseys and gear with the #12 on it. it really gets them going.

  765. chawan_cut October 25, 2008 4:43 am

  774. wafan October 25, 2008 5:28 am

    Garret . . .

I wanted to thank you for that link to the presidential commercials you mentioned the other day. I gave the link to my kids in my Civics class and asked them to compare and contrast the differences between the various campaigns over the years. A couple of the kids were to compare and contrast the differences between the parties through the years.

One of the first things they noticed was how often the word CHANGE was used.

    Thanks, again!!!

Ouch. That kine kala needs to be somewhere else right now.
    Thanks again ST.

  810. whitey October 25, 2008 7:46 am

Good morning and long time no see Tsaikos. Great trip to city of lights, had “small cc” with las vegas and 702 warrior, got my touch back at the “craps” table, lost at slots, etc.

I can sympathize with Maverick cause whenever I have to go to Hilo or Kona, even in advance, the air fare is over $250 and then they charge you an additional $15 for your first bag, so add $30 and you looking at $300 (no forget the tip).

I travel almost always with Hawaiian Air whenever I can, but they are now getting the “eastern mainland” mentality and even tho they say they are Hawaiian, they are losing the spirit that drives most of us in Hawaii. I go to the airport to go to the city of lights, they tell me that the 1st bag is $15 and the 2nd bag is $25, total $40 one way additional. They already when raise the airfare and now they still want to collect more from you. Some may say that this is the norm, but lots of people in Hawaii don’t know that the airfares on the mainland is much lower than here for the same distance. Case and point, you can go from Los Angeles to NY less than 50% of what you pay for HNL to LAS. Hawaiian “meals” is stale sandwich and they call it a meal. Lucky that the “employees” (not the upper management) have the Hawaiian spirit and aloha. They are what make the company, not those with the eastern mainland mentality. If you need to know what is eastern mainland, very similar to hao——, who tell you that our way is superior.

    whitey,

I know what you saying. Flew NWA on my trip last week. Terrible!
Felt kinda bad for the employees; the way mgmt sets things up puts plenny pressure on the employees on the front line who gotta face da public. They catch all the h*ll…

  814. whitey October 25, 2008 8:07 am

d1, i wonder what it would be like if the upper management had to check in passengers either at curbside or gate. i don’t think they would last 4 hrs. But, to top all of this off, at the end of the year, Hawaiian going show a profit and they going give upper mgt a bonus for making money at the “peons” expense. What a kick in our arses!!!!!

  815. wafan October 25, 2008 8:08 am

    d1 . . .

Best part is taking some ono food on board NWA. The local stewards are hungry and look at the food. Offer them some for $10 — cash. Most of them laugh. A few sour ones give you a go to someplace hot and evil look.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  816. whitey October 25, 2008 8:15 am

wafan, you get the right idea, but just share the fuud with them, no charge, otherwise lose aloha spirit. somehow, the flight attendants love it when you do little things and share it with them (that is aloha, hawaiian style).

At this time of global economic crisis, when stock market and Forex speculations become more like a casino gambling, smart people start searching for more secure and stable sources of their income.

These few years have given me valuable experience in online investing. Today I spend almost no time, as all my business process goes by itself. All I do is manage the financial flows.
Monitoring websites of investment programs are irreplaceable in this passive making money scheme:
    [url=http://hyip.com]HYIP.com[/url] – the leading online investment monitor;
    GoldPoll.com – the oldest HYIP-monitor;
    HYIPBanker.com – a monitors’ reviewer.

I’m Thomas Moor, I was looking for the way how to make online investment in the net, and someday I’ve found [url=http://www.stoic-capital.com/index.php?partner=6912867083]www.stoic-capital.com[/url] the investment portal.
The main point of online investment was really far from my understanding. It was something new for me, something unexplored.
I never thought before that investment can be so easy and simple.

I have spent much time for reading feedbacks about Stoic-Capital on boards and monitoring sites.
And I realized – Stoic-Capital really works and makes a profit for customers. So, I have decided to put some money in. First of all, in April I put $2000 and gain approx. 2 percent daily. I mean EVERY business day. I had $40 daily 5 days a week. It’s $200 per week – not bad for beginning, and not bad for doing nothing. Money been working without my meddling in process.

I’ve never known before and even couldn’t imagine that such slight investment can bring such sizeable profit. City banks and mutual funds surely can not give such profit consider my amount of first deposit. When I’ve got $1000 for a bit much more than a month I certainly decided that Stoic-Capital is serious project honestly paying its investors and taking care of their prosperity. So, I open another deposit. I’ve trusted so much to Stoic and I decided to deposit my savings of $25,000. I’ve just withdrawn it from my Bank of America account with their paltry percents.

Right before putting my deposit I found out that for amounts of more than $20K Stoic-Capital offers VIP plan. It’s 2.2% – 2.8% per every business day depending on day-trading results. These results are e-mailed to investors daily. Then I contacted the support of Stoic, their live-chat, which thanks God works 24×7 online. (It’s really convenient to get advice and explanation). So, right at that time I received information about such tool named COMPOUNDING. Compounding means re-investment of gained profit back to deposit, so it brings maximum profit to the end of deposit term.

That’s why in the middle of May I deposited last $25K of my cash and set up 100% compounding.
In the beginning of February 2009 I will have $2,700,677.20 exactly. I calculated it using Stoic calculator.

At the moment I’ve earned profit of approx. $4500, withdrawn and cashed it out. That means that by now my profit return has already exceeded the initial investment more than twice. And I will gain the same amount of profit again till the end of the deposit term of 190 business days (24-12-2008). Profit from the second deposit together with the deposited amount of $25K will become available for withdrawing in 190 days, in Feb 2009, just because I’ve set up the 100% compound. Let all of day profit be added to the deposit for the next day interest be accrued on the bigger amount of deposit every day.

In May I knew about one more tremendous opportunity to make money that Stoic provides – their referral program. And I joined it to invite relatives, friends and mates to get wealthy too. Now I have 77 referrals who have already invested total amount of around $1,800,000. That brought me additionally $90K as referral fee.
Not really bad for the beginning, is it?!

Now I know how to make much money. I have stabile income and become wealthy man thanks to Stoic-Capital. Now I feel the illuminative way open to me. The Peace is plentiful – just get in right time in right place! That is the Stoic!
And my mission is to expand my experience to the folks! Let people have the idea how to join the world of prosperity.
    That is the right place!
And now it is the right time!
