Training Day

The Warriors began their official offseason conditioning program this week, with perfect attendance for everybody who is on the island (about 90 players). Some players who were cut or not invited to training camp participated in conditioning drills yesterday afternoon.

After conditioning coordinators Tommy Heffernan and Grant Steen left Ching Field, the players stayed around to conduct their own unsupervised workouts.

* * * * *

Left wideout Darius Bright displayed first-step quickness and breakaway speed in post routes and inside screens.

a-9

Bright said he has lost 10 pounds by running about 3 to 4 miles every day, cutting out starchy foods and sweets, and eating more salads and fruits and drinking more water. Bright, who is a little taller than 6-4, said he now weighs 230. It also is apparent he will create mismatches. Here’s Bright (defended by cornerback Kawika Ornellas):

a-11

* * * * *

Disregard the weight listed in UH’s on-line roster. Slotback Billy Ray Stutzmann said he weighs 185.

a-14

* * * * *

Quarterback Kevin Spain, who underwent surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder, showed no ill effects during passing drills yesterday.

a-1

* * * * *

Safety Jordan Gomes also appears to be fully healthy after recovering from a torn ACL.

a-17

* * * * *

The Warriors do not appear to lack student leaders. The defensive linemen took turns leading drills. Richard Torres, Tank Hopkins and Ornellas were among the defensive backs yelling out coverage instructions. Austin Hansen tutored the young offensive linemen. And linebackers Aaron Brown and Corey Paredes took charge. Here’s Brown:

a-2

And Paredes (healthy after undergoing an offseason shoulder procedure):

a-4

Paredes is making the move to middle linebacker.

* * * * *

Keep an eye on running back Joey Iosefa. Teammates say he’s the real deal.

a-6

* * * * *

Unsupervised workouts are serious deals. After buck linebacker Darryl McBride dropped a sure interception, he immediately gave himself punishment: 10 push-ups, on the spot.

Happy birthday to Cindy Cee.

    BCS head is meeting with the Justice Department. In pre-interview, he acknowledges the NCAA has no control over the BCS postseason.

    I’m thinking: If this is the case, then couldn’t the NCAA declare the BCS to be a professional entity, and that the $300 worth of bowl gifts be deemed improper? Then the NCAA could declare every BCS school to be in violation — which could be used as leverage to force a playoff.

    #5 – it reminds me of a few years back when I saw Adam Leonard dragging out the water jugs to the grass fields. As the senior, he could have told a rookie or one of the younger guys to do it, but as a leader he took care of it. It really impressed me.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid June 2, 2011 8:18 am

    Mr. Tsai,

    #14 The BCS system has always struck me as just plain wrong for supposedly “amateur” college athletics.

    Awesome photos! Mahalo Tsai. Just got my Phil Steele annual. Kinda disappointing — he has UH listed under his more “easiest” schedules, but goes on to write under their team description that the warriors got a grueling schedule. What gives? Maybe he mad that UH proved him wrong last year and fininshed as co champs as opposed to 5th in the WAC!

    Wondering how Kevin Spain’s looking? The first summer he was here, he was throwing looong passes; with Sampson’s speed, it could be sweeet. Hope he took the time to study the playbook and film while he was rehabbing. Now for the reps with the receivers. I think he needs to start putting on more muscle.

    UH VS UNLV 2011

    Ticket Status Update

    Okay, so in 2007, I had no problem getting a group discount from the UNLV ticket office and was able to pick up the tickets prior to single game seats becoming available. (I.e., they had group blocks to distribute.) In 2009, no more group discount, but I flew to Vegas on June 1, the first day of single season ticket sales and got our 240 tix.

    This year is starting to annoy me. A month or so ago when I called the ticket office, I was told single game tickets would go on sale the beginning of July. (A month later than in 2009 – perhaps to get as many season ticket sales as possible?) Today, I was told in the middle of July, but to call back in mid-June for a possible “pre-sale” to the Tsaikos. I’ll keep everyone posted.

    It is very important that you all let SteveM your ticket intentions since I’m going to base the group size from that list. Currently, it’s around 70 or so. I’m thinking by September we will have 150-200 committed.

    Ticket requests received to date are posted at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

    Requests are still considered tentative but Rich2176 might ask for confirmation soon. Please update ticket, RSVP, and other info via email: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

    Given their lousy TV deal, the BCS is the only real reason to jump from the WAC to the Mountain West Conference.

    http://www.lvrj.com/sports/mountain-west-gaining-ground-for-bcs-waiver-122766663.html

  61. madeinhawaii June 2, 2011 2:19 pm

    If the MWC does get AQ status, it would behooves them to try and woo BYU back into the conference. The combination of Boise, Nevada, Hawaii, BYU, and Fresno could help maintain AQ status for the conference.

  62. NCAA June 2, 2011 2:26 pm

    I thought Boise, Nevada, and Hawaii were all in the top 25 of the final BCS standings. This would help assure the MWC of AQ status for the 2013 season. BYU was not in the top 25, or were they?

  63. madeinhawaii June 2, 2011 2:29 pm

    NCAA

    BYU will find it’s way back to the top 25 soon enough. Not many other good options out there. And BYU vs Hawaii will sell tickets at Aloha.

  64. NCAA June 2, 2011 2:31 pm

    What I meant was that if a waiver is granted then the final BCS standing in 2010 would help the MWC in 2013.

    Kazz, you would know…

    Go Mizzou! 😉

  69. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 3:47 pm

    If the MWC gets the AQ exemption, maybe BYU should say — heh, heh — just kidding, and come on back. There”s going to be no room for an independent at the BCS party.

  70. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 3:49 pm

  107. Darren June 2, 2011 6:19 pm

    If Paredes is moving to MLB, what’s happening to his outside spot? Hasn’t base D been the nickel unless it’s a run-heavy opponent?

  108. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 6:23 pm

    Paredes will be in the middle most of the time. Brown is at one of the outside spots. Other most likely goes to Art Laurel or Brendan Daley. There also will be reps for Daily-Lyles in the middle.

  109. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 6:24 pm

    If they go to a nickel, then Kamalani Alo becomes the quarter, rolling up as a linebacker. That gives UH the flexibility of using Laurel, Daley or T.J. as the elephant.

  110. gigi-hawaii June 2, 2011 6:32 pm

    hubby is watching the game on the DVR.

    I am doing my best to keep a poker face.

    Just think: if Dallas wins the next 3 at home, they win the trophy!

    yippee!!! That is soooo doable!

    Saw him on TV.

    His new girlfriend looks so young, whereas he has aged quite a bit.

  116. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 6:37 pm

    Glad Gib is turning things around.

    There’s a different energy and excitement to attending an important basketball game.

  118. gigi-hawaii June 2, 2011 6:38 pm

    He’s Canadian so that’s why he has aged?

    Frowns a lot.

  119. gigi-hawaii June 2, 2011 6:41 pm

    Kazz, do guys in Hawaii still talk like that?

    I never hear that kind of speech anymore.

    why put bosch in for defense when lebron is one of the best defenders ever to play this game???????

    Steve Nash has a bad back. Probably why he frowns alot…

  126. gigi-hawaii June 2, 2011 7:34 pm

    The Heat had 1 foul left to give.

    So why didn’t they foul Dirk when they couldve?

    Good for me that they didn’t!

  127. gigi-hawaii June 2, 2011 7:35 pm

    slugger, yeah I have seen him lying on the floor during the games due to a bad back.

    redzone…but this is the last play of the game…..!

  132. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 8:41 pm

    I agree that LeBron, not Bosh, should have been on Dirk.

    Then again, for $14.5 million a year, Bosh should be expected to play defense for 15 seconds.

  133. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 8:43 pm

    I also thought the Heat should have saved a timeout. They had to go the length of the court.

  134. seasider June 2, 2011 8:54 pm

    #76

    FYI

    From the official rules of baseball, Rule 8.02(a)(1): “The pitcher shall not bring his pitching hand in contact with his mouth or lips while in the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitching rubber. EXCEPTION: Provided it is agreed to by both managers, the umpire prior to the start of a game played in cold weather, may permit the pitcher to blow on his hand.”

    The reason is that any substance, when applied unevenly to the surface of the ball, can make its flight unpredictable and almost impossible for a batter to hit. Saliva is just conveniently available in almost endless supply, and is particularly effective when mixed with, for example, tobacco juice.

    Up until 1920, players were allowed to do pretty much anything they wanted to the ball, but on August 16, Indians shortstop Ray Chapman was hit in the head by a pitch and killed. Doctoring the ball was subsequently barred, which helped bring about an offensive boom in that decade, though pitchers who depended on it were allowed to keep using it for the rest of their career. The last win awarded to a legal spitballer came in 1934, when Burleigh Grimes of the Pirates beat the Giants.

  135. Stephen Tsai June 2, 2011 9:09 pm

    Just don’t name kids Burleigh anymore.

    Or Honus.

  136. warriorsun June 2, 2011 9:36 pm

    ive been looking forward, with excited anticipation, to the day dailey snaps up his chin strap as a warrior. the others are leslie, edwards, tavita and gant. they will all audition for roles as immediate impact players in 2011.

    there is more to what, where and when daley will fit than whether he will fit.

    everything else has been pre-recorded. he is the real deal.

    football IQ is not discussed as passionately as other physical attributes, but to be an impact player out of juco, field smarts accelerates the learning curve and ultimately, positive performance outcome. i wait with bated breath for camp to begin.

  137. al June 2, 2011 9:39 pm

    today’s game showed the value of a good coach who can think on his feet. this is what separates the pat riley’s, phil jackson’s, red auerbach’s, from the norm.

  138. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 2, 2011 10:05 pm

    Mahalo for answering my questions concerning PIAA. I’m surprised that I didn’t know about it beforehand since I sent them a donation check sometime last fall.

  139. BG June 2, 2011 10:18 pm

    Since no one has played the devil’s advocate on the hurricane fund, I’ll jump up and do my duty. Since the politicos were only able to do so much cutting without getting into verboten territory and jeopardizing re-election chances, the money had to come from somewhere. Do the math. The amount of money in the so called Hurricane Fund wouldn’t amount to a small fart in a big hurricane should one hit Oahu. To designate it as something that would help in case of a hurricane is just so much shibai.

  140. BG June 2, 2011 10:23 pm

    W-Doc

    Whether or not Doris is there, PIAA is still there and doing a great job for the keikis. Your donation is being put to good use. The change came out in the papers so they probably thought it was sufficient notice.

    If you’re suffering from swelling and infection then the doctor may treat the decayed tooth but if there isn’t any remedy then you may have to go for wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth are incredibly crucial as it impacts the mouth and other parts of the body. You might see that the dentist will not get rid of both the wisdom teeth in one sitting. Wisdom teeth removal can be a complicated process and you must go to an expert so that you are in secure hands.
