Up for the fight

Before departing for Seattle, safety Leroy Lutu asked the UH coaches what it would take to earn a football scholarship. The short answer: Earn significant playing time.

Lutu, who began his UH sports career as a basketball player before joining the football team last year, has set up an eight-week fitness program that he hopes will improve his athletic skills.

He will work out at EndZone Athletics in Seattle, focusing on weight-lifting, speed and agility training. Part of the program includes boxing.

“(Boxing) has all of the essentials — hand speed, foot speed, endurance,” Lutu said. “Safeties need good footwork. It’s the key to being a good safety.”

He said some of the boxing workouts will be at Cappy’s, a one-story, warehouse-like facility.

“Boxing workouts are really intense,” Lutu said. “After you do them,  you’re exhausted, and your legs are heavy.”

Lutu, who is 6 feet 3 and 212 pounds, said he hopes to gain eight pounds before returning to Hawaii in mid-July.

“I want to stay at safety,” Lutu said. “There are a lot of things I need to work on.”

He also has received a stack of football DVDs that he will study each day.

“I’m going to work hard, watch a lot of film, and try to progress,” he said.

Not a regular poster but had to his one time chance…

  3. kai kane May 23, 2011 9:00 am

since when does boxing(an endurance sport) and football(an explosive, long rest sport) go hand-in-hand? If he wants to get playing time why doesn’t he stay and work out with his teammates and coach heffernan? And why are you reporting about a walk-on safety, who’s not in the two-deep?

  4. Okole Maluna May 23, 2011 9:01 am

Wondering how many will join the Gibs team to China.

    Should be interesting tour.

8 games on tour is a full agenda.

I believe it was a human interest story. A teams can’t win without solid backups and third stringers, Leroy may never start for the Warriors but it looks like he has the attitude of a winner.

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    Go Lutu Jr!

DPK & homey – so waddya think of yesterday’s GOT?

  9. Okole Maluna May 23, 2011 9:09 am

This Weekend UH Sport news was all sooo positive. Made up or Hard Weekend I had.

    1. Baseball what how many runs? Win a WAC title since yeng yang.

    2. Football media guide for 2012? We’ve haven’t yet started 2011 season.

    3. Basketball team to China and Japan? Wasn’t it Junes Jones idea way back in 2000.

All great news ‘moving into the future’ of UH Sports Program.

  10. Bowwar May 23, 2011 9:12 am

Good to hear that Lutu is making the committment. His Dad was a great player, so hopefully, some of it rubs off. If anything, if Leroy can make special teams, he’ll add to his value.

Most of the defensive linemen have gone to some sort of boxing/martial arts training.

    Moniz also boxes.

This post touches my heart. There are so many deserving athletes and not enough scholarships for all. Good luck!

  16. Buffoman May 23, 2011 9:21 am

    Wow, top 100!

Does anyone do training in a pool? I’d think that working against the resisitance of water might aid in quickness once without that watery element.

  17. Okole Maluna May 23, 2011 9:22 am

Lutu, at 6 feet 3 and 212 pounds, and wants to gain eight pounds before returning to Hawaii in mid-July.

Boy that’s a LB size and he wants to stay at Safety? That is NFL Strong Safety Size at best. That I can’t wait to see.

  18. jm2375 May 23, 2011 9:23 am

Congrats to Kolten Wong on his WAC Hitter of the Week award!

ST – do any of the players incorporate dance into their training?

  19. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 9:27 am

    jm:

I have not heard of that, but that would make some sense.

I know Spencer Smith took some dance classes; not sure if they were for school or workouts. He also did yoga. What’s that yoga that do in the heated room in Kaimuki? A couple of players did that.

  20. Okole Maluna May 23, 2011 9:27 am

So where is Tae Bo? Isn’t he a boxing work out program?

Bring him down to UH Dance Studio for a Cardio Work out.

They tell me I need to strech my back.

  23. warriorsun May 23, 2011 9:32 am

how quickly some forget ikaika alama-francis who also turned in his sneakers for cleats.

Although ikaka and lutu are different football position players on D, they do share one interesting and noticeable commonality–genetics. Both their father’s were successful local football products and acheived accolades in the PAC-10 conference.

Secondly, boxing training methods are quite common in football summer training preparation as a tool for foot-quickness, endurance and as method in hand-to-hand tactics. many of uh ballers are training under the watchful mentorship of well known oxing-trainers in honolulu. i know of several uh starters whom have been skipping rope and battering bags in palolo. they swear by it.

Finally, you got to admire the bottomline spirit of lutu.

he aint demanding a scholie, but asking what it takes.

Leroy is willing to work for it and make the neccessary sacrifice….all the while, paying his own way as a walk on. Returning home to seattle to train, relieves expenses among other things. you canbet lutu will back in plenty of time before camp begins.

    best wishes to leroy lutu!

Haven’t seen the latest episode yet. If its anything like the others, it will be a doozy!

    Kekoa –

At least da nephew is looking *GOOD* in those scenes. I magine how WE might look in those same scenes. They’d have to change it to a horror movie! 😆 Aiiieeeeee!!!

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2011 9:39 am

You guys are thinking of “Hot Yoga” in Kaimuki. I cut my hair near there and see plenny sweaty people coming out of the classes. Looks like a great work out.

When I used to coach wrestling, I noticed the best football players were also the best wrestlers. Boxing sounds like it would help as a cross training techniqe.

Not to mention, all the Lutus you see locally are top athletes.

  26. bigislandkurt May 23, 2011 9:39 am

Boxing and football training absolutely go hand in hand. Boxing training will make you wish you stuck with just football (and basketball for that matter). For reflexes, stamina, toughness, quickness, endurance — hard to beat boxing.

    BIK

  27. bigislandkurt May 23, 2011 9:44 am

And remember, the post above does not mean that Lutu’s boxing training will supplant football training. If anything, it is used to take the usual football training to a whole different level. Just like the Ikkei experience in AZ that a lot of folks have heard about. The goal is obtaining optimal football bodies — via trainings that utilize many more unorthodox or out of the box ways of taking fitness beyond imagination.

    BIK

    Good morning, gangees!

All Warriors need to keep working through the summer. Hope to see the receivers working out with QBs this summer developing their timing with each other.

Spencer Smith took yoga and hula when at UH. I encouraged Siaki Cravens to continue taking tai chi because it develops your sense of balance, a 6th sense of awareness of who’s around you, & with push-hands, being able to throw your opponent down using their momentum. There’s a Wu-style tai chi master who teaches at UH. She might be teaching at the Mo’ili’ili Comm. Ctr. this summer.

  30. madeinhawaii May 23, 2011 9:49 am

Didn’t Moniz work out with a boxing trainer last spring and summer?

  34. Kazz May 23, 2011 10:03 am

Finally saw the ad with Moniz on the “beach” looking at the “horizon” with the H logo in the “sand”.

Is any of that real? Why does it look like Moniz is looking at something that looks more like a nuclear fallout? Real unnatural colors and just well… not very appealing.

I would NOT have bragged that the ad cost UH $4,000.00.

  35. Slugger May 23, 2011 10:04 am

That yoga style is called Bikram yoga.

  36. A-joe May 23, 2011 10:05 am

Judo and Wrestling makes some of the best D-line and Linebackers around. Played with and against some of those cats! Unreal them!

Another offseason sport being emphasized that compliments football is Rugby. Makes American football seem like a piece of cake there after.

  37. tommui May 23, 2011 10:06 am

I recall reading somewhere that some pro-players took ballet! Many thought it was sort of stupid but they claimed it improved balance and agility.

  45. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 10:57 am

I think the $4,000 pricetag is a sore spot on the Lower Campus.

  46. dcwarrior May 23, 2011 11:02 am

At that price point, isn’t the $4000 for the ad spot in the guide, not the cost to make the picture?

  47. Old School Dave May 23, 2011 11:07 am

Any type of training, boxing, martial arts, strongman, etc is good. The key is to watch your diet. Go easy on the rice (less and brown is better) and mac salad. Seems that there are less “problems” with players coming in overweight these last few seasons. Remember when Coach Singletary had to use a special scale to weigh a certain D-lineman who came reported to camp at over 400 lbs. Is Coach Heffernan holding beach workouts in the sand this summer?

  48. warriorsun May 23, 2011 11:07 am

most of the bcs football programs i know about provide, by the s&c coach, each baller with a summer training schedule tailored to their position and personal achievement. as of two weeks ago, these individual training schedules were not distributed en masse. perhaps, tommy has another method of distribution. idk. however, one thing noticeable, dk of any slackers among the warrior invitees to summer camp. continued improvement in this area will undoubtably contribute to better team conditioning when camp commences in aug together with a reduction in nagging injuries attributed to poor summer conditioning…..we will need a jump start this fall–colorado and washington have hawaii plastered over their weight-training walls!

….the pac-12 conference has determined that colorado has the toughest ooc schedule for 2011 among its membership. hawaii, colorado state, ohio state (all three on the road) and california. calif is inc as ooc bc it is the 10th pac-12 team the buffs will face and is considered an occ game for this purpose.

while the buffs D secondary remains questionable exiting spring, it will face four of the best QBs in college football in the fall–inc, andrew luck, (stanf), darron thomas (ore), matt barkley (usc) and bryant moniz (haw)….ouch!

….the lack of a go-to-te has plaqued huskie coach steve sarkisian in his first two years. now, he has three super frosh te’s–all 6-6 245-250 #s. projected to start from this precocious group following an outstanding spring performance is austin sefernan-jenkins, who enrolled early out of high school to attend huskie spring practice. sefernan-jenkins is 6-6, 250, and was rated #2 nationally at his position for the class of 2011 by rivals.com.

  49. Old School Dave May 23, 2011 11:14 am

Been mentioned before, but I hope there is more training together as a team on campus for those players spending the summer here as opposed to players training elsewhere on their own as was the case in years past.

  50. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 11:30 am

    Old School Dave:

There are two main summer sessions. The first is from today through July 1. The second from July 5 through Aug. 1.

A player is only on scholarship (tuition, room and board) during the summer session he attends. UH can afford only one summer session per player. If you’re a Mainland player taking the first session, that means you have to pay for your own living expenses for five weeks if you choose to stay in Hawaii until the start of training camp.

There’s a bridge program that ends about when training camp opens. But that means a Mainland player would have to pay his own way for about two months if he chose to stay here.

Many Mainland players absorb the cost and stay here; some can’t afford to do that.

But all have the offseason training books, and each has a list of self-created goals.

  51. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 11:35 am

A better analogy is if you were a player from Hawaii attending San Jose State.

Imagine having to pay Bay Area-rent and expenses for a month. Of course, you can get a job, but you’d have to get one during the spring semester (can’t have your first check two weeks into your first month on your own). Not many people offer one-month jobs, either.

And there certainly isn’t enough money in Hawaii to pay players to water FieldTurf. If there are, employers should call the UH football office. Or any recent high school graduate.

  52. madeinhawaii May 23, 2011 11:41 am

Colt took up Samoan.. worked wonders on his ability to stay in the pocket longer.

  53. warriorsun May 23, 2011 11:49 am

while our D is on a fast road to improvement with added perimeter speed from our lbs and corners, our DTs remain a key on the front to stop both the buffs and huskies. both teams will run the middle out of a power set to control tempo and run the clock to keep hawaii’s air game grounded.

kaniela and vaughn are well-mentioned starters, but dont forget haku correa led DTs in total tackles (45) and zac masch was on top in sacks with 2. both haku and zack looked good in the spring game and with this quality depth @ dt–aranda will have the luxury to rotate this group and keep his middle-front fresh.

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2011 11:55 am

    jm4321 –

    Watched it. Wow!

  55. warriorsun May 23, 2011 12:02 pm

we all know the difficulty our program faces in meeting 100% summer training participation at home for all camp invitees (105). unfortunately, good excuses for non-attendance dont replace team goals for 100% participation.

its like hearing riley and nash whinning about the difficulty in recruiting high school players on the mainland….until arnold came to town.

btw, tsai, if im not mistaken, u said hawaii had 100% participation during last years summer training schedule. if true, a remarkable feat. as an example, boise state has met that projection for a number of consecutive years.

  56. madeinhawaii May 23, 2011 12:13 pm

for $4000 I hope that includes a life sized billboard.

  57. Bowwar May 23, 2011 12:18 pm

In the world of advertising and marketing, $4000 is pretty cheap…

You have to get your product “out there” if you plan on being sucessful. We can have the BEST football team in the middle of the Pacific, but NO ONE will know about us unless we get ourselves out in the marketplace and let people know about WARRIOR football.

In this type of situation, we have to remember the adage that you have to spend money, to make money…Why isn’t anyone “yapping” about the money that the State may contribute to the Warrior BB team going to Asia this summer?

  58. papajoe2 May 23, 2011 12:28 pm

#57 Bowwar, I think the money for the basketbows will all be donated. They said that they do no expect to spend anything from the school.

  59. OTTO May 23, 2011 12:35 pm

#55. I think the 100% attendence during off-season training attendence created one of the violations that Boise got in trouble for. The Boise scholarship players were sharing rooms with non-scholarship players (since they couldn’t afford to stay in Boise). Its like the situation years back with Matt Leinart at USC. His family could afford to rent him a nice apartment when he was at USC. He let one of his team-mates live with him for free, but then they found out it was an NCAA violation. His family had to charge the other player rent, since the NCAA considered the free room as compensation.

Back in ’88, UH Football players were required to take dance, ballet, or yoga. My next door neighbor in Mokihana was Matt Anoai (6’4″ 340lbs). He had his picture on the front of Kaleo dancing next to a tiny Japanese girl.

Matt didn’t last at UH but I saw him a while ago on “Fat March” or some show like that. He was from Florida and his father wrestled as “Sika the Wild Samoan”.

  65. Old School Dave May 23, 2011 1:23 pm

Housing, in general for student-athletes can be tough, especially during the summer months. Rents around SJSU must be ridiculous. At the JUCOs in California I was reading about the problems Santa Barbara CC football coaching staff was having recruiting players there due to the lack on on-campus housing and the high housing costs in the community. On the other hand, their stadium has to be one of the most picturesque in the nation for a JUCO.

  70. Slugger May 23, 2011 3:34 pm

    tommui & al,

I heard Lynn Swann speak at a conference. He talked about using the talents you have to succeed.

When he was a kid, his mother sent him to ballet classes. He was so ashamed to walk down the street in his dance clothes to class. As an adult, in one of the Super Bowl games that the Steelers won, he was able to jump up, pirouette in the air, catch the ball and come down inside of the sideline. That was using his ballet dancing skills in the game of football.

Classes/training that help with movement, balance, awareness of your body, as well as awareness of movement around you.

Wu-style tai chi was developed by the Wu family. I was told that one of the founders was a Chinese boxer. The form is not as open as the Yang style tai chi. As a martial art, it really works.

  71. Slugger May 23, 2011 3:39 pm

“Classes/training that help with movement, balance, awareness of your body, as well as awareness of movement around you.” = incomplete sentence, but you know what I mean

  72. NYUH May 23, 2011 3:49 pm

A 6 feet 3, 220 pounds safety could be an awesome special teams player. Go Lutu.

  73. Slugger May 23, 2011 3:52 pm

    al,

What’s good at Maple Garden? Gotta order some food for tonight. What are those spareribs that I like? Honey spareribs?

  75. NYUH May 23, 2011 3:53 pm

Boxing would be an interesting training for a QB. Helps keep focus while taking a beating. Hope that will not be an issue this year. Once again the OL is in question. Hope they respond like last year’s OL.

  76. wafan May 23, 2011 3:55 pm

Hope all of the Warriors develop and keep the desire to improve and succeed!

The dry fried chicken is good too but …

  80. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 4:44 pm

    Re: Offseason.

UH did have 100 percent participation last summer in that every player attended summer school, and took part in Tommy Heffernan’s program.

But not everybody was here every single day of the summer, for reasons mentioned above.

But you know what? Not every one of Boise’s players participated in every single day of offseason training, either. Despite what it claims.

  81. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 4:47 pm

    Re: $4,000 ad.

No, $4,000 is not much for a national ad, even for a publication that few buy.

What has raised eyebrows is that zero dollars have been allotted to promote the team’s star quarterback this year.

There have been a lot of cutbacks at UH the past couple of years. For the athletic program, $4,000 actually is a significant amount.

  82. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2011 4:51 pm

Got to see some of the recruits wandering around campus today, like Brandon Leslie and Brendan Daley. Daley is a big dude.

  83. Kazz May 23, 2011 4:54 pm

Matt Anoai played for UH football?

He went on to some decent fame in WWE. He made his WWE debut as “Rosey” 1/2 of the “3 Minute Warning” tag team with the late Eddie Fatu aka “Jamal” aka “Umaga”. Then was billed as a Superhero in training.

Following his release from WWE, I believe he went to wrestle in Japan.

Saw his last WWE appearance as he inducted Afa and Sika, The Wild Samoans, into the WWE Hall of Fame at Wrestlemania 23 weekend in Detroit at the Fox Theater.

  84. wafan May 23, 2011 4:56 pm

So, no dollars were allocated to promote Moniz as a Heisman candidate. I thought UH planned to promote him? Have not heard anything yet. And, without any funds it is not any wonder why. Or, was talking about it the extent of the campaign?

Lots of talk. But, alas, little action, if any.

  85. wafan May 23, 2011 4:58 pm

    Nytal!

UH did the photo shoot on the beach with Moniz. When it was told it needed an ad for the magazine, it used a shot from the photo session.

But, no, there is no swag campaign for Moniz, such as DVDs or notepads.

Kazz… I don’t think Matt ever played a game, but he was on the team his freshman year. He didn’t take care of school work. When he left he was deciding on playing for Mississippi Delta CC or start wrestling.

  89. papajoe2 May 23, 2011 5:20 pm

I remember a UH starting running back named Tonni (sp?) Clay. He was a dancer and quit before his senior year to devote his time to dancing. Didn’t gain very many yards as a RB. Danced too much on the field with the ball instead of going forward. If anybody laid a hand on him, he would go down.

  90. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2011 5:26 pm

  95. al May 23, 2011 7:12 pm

speaking of bbq ribs…after taste testing hundreds of chinese style ribs (not the sweet sour kind) i have to conclude that while maple garden’s rank way up there although not as lofty a position as the old trader vic’s in the market place…the winner is the moist and juicy, simply tangy and tasty, finger licking, can’t eat only one, slow roasted in the chinese oven, fall off the bone tender are those ribs served at that other garden restaurant that serves some of the top chinese cuisine in the world…moon garden on vineyard avenue.

so good, you should pre-order a day in advance.

  96. warriorsun May 23, 2011 8:31 pm

I spoke about daley and tavita being immediate impact players as well as leslie, edwards and gant.

aranda runs a package D with different looks and personnel to fit each field situation.

daley has good speed to go along with his size and strength but maybe inappropriate in the middle on passing downs, where quickness and cover zones are designed. you can bet, given his size and assests coach will find a position or situational fit.

  103. warriorsun May 23, 2011 8:57 pm

as far as defining participation it is generally meant to mean the percent of players invited to camp that report early for a supervised summer-training cycle. the actual summer training cycles vary among programs but can run betw 6-8 weeks. each program differs, but usually the s&c coach determines the amount or extent each player participates bc coaches are precluded by ncaa rules to manage player training during this time period. participation is officially “volunatary” and supervised by a designated trainer or s&c coach, like tommy heffernan and his assistants.

    results are recorded.

traditionally, the cycle includes running in the am, weight and agility training in late morn and 7 on 7 in the mid-afternoon to early evening. each day can vary according to a schedule and the tempo increased for a particular segment.

football coaches arent allowed to supervise but their “eyes” are omnipresent and they are lingering about the facilities and offices.

when it actually runs according to design, it is truly a busy-bee business and sight to behold.

  104. Slugger May 23, 2011 9:11 pm

We did have the honey spareribs. I really like them. We also had the fish in black bean sauce that was also very good.

    Sala is making some news.

    http://www.stltoday.com/sports/football/professional/article_6e09be5a-af7e-590c-9f73-840a06797ebf.html

Salas showed up on Bradford’s doorstep in the wee hours Monday after a red-eye flight from California. “I rolled in at 4:30, got a couple of hours of sleep and got out here” to Lindenwood, Salas said.

He described his first on-field experience as an NFL player as “exciting.”

“It’s great to get out here, get to know the guys, and get to know the offense and everything we’re going to have to be learning,” Salas said. “You can see the difference with the leadership and the maturity of the men out here. I haven’t got to experience a full NFL practice yet, with the coaches and pads and everything. I’m looking forward to that as well.”

  111. al May 23, 2011 9:52 pm

i think that the neisman’s still live in kaimuki.

  112. chawan_cut May 23, 2011 9:54 pm

i know its kinda late, but i wanted to share my thoughts on KHNL/K5. i also posted this on SH.

KHNL sports was my introduction to UH games, and to be cliche, the rest is history. i was a young kid with nothing to do on the weekends, and i stayed up late at night to watch uh baseball, basketball, volleyball and football.

watching howard dashefsky, randy oyama, todd takayoshi, harold cabab, franz yuen, chris walz, fabio ribero, tony maroney, trevor ruffin, phil lott, troy bowe, kalia mcgee, jarinn akana, kaui wakita, judy mosely, fran vilarmia, toni nishida, jamie paet, mahina eleneki, martina cincerova, allen allen, damien hardy, just to name a few.

it was only until my parents finally let me catch the city bus that i could experience a UH game live at Rainbow stadium and watch the Rainbow lady run around with her pom poms. i got to watch trevor ruffin hit the first miracle byu buzzer beater from the top row of the blaisdell. i believe my first football game at aloha stadium was in the ’92 year when we beat pitt.

i finally got to UH and went to as many games as i could as a student. (i sure miss those student ticket prices, and if i had a free pass to every game with this current student fee, i’d be at every game, every weekend and never ever graduate). i became friends with many uh athletes in the dorms, and they were all cool. they were just regular students just like me. they weren’t super stars or celebrites. just trying to write a report, study for a midterm or final, except having to also practice and perform to win for us fans.

thank you KHNL, K5, and all of your staff and crew over the years. you created a lifelong fan from a young kid who knew nothing of sports. you helped me to learn math, as i constantly kept subtracting and adding to figure out how much we had to come back from or how much we were ahead of. to all of the announcers over the years, you gave the game life. you gave it history and you gave it personality.

i only hope that Oceanic does half the job you do, and they do not deprive current young ones out there from becoming a future Rainbow/Warrior/Wahine fan.

    mahalo and god bless you.

the home team will always be our team.

    c_c

    i love k5.

i am looking forward to see how oc16 will put together this new package. what i am looking forward to is there high quality high def broadcasts.

i am hoping that the likes of papa leahey will at least get to do some broadcasting.

i am still looking forward to some new guys as well.

i hope that robert kekaula can somehow find his way on to the oc16 football broadcasts. he would bring much color.

i wouldn’t mind kanoa replacing pops for basketball.

pops and pal though should be a fixture.

perhaps scott robbs finding himself behind the camera for volleyball would be a nice thing.

  124. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 23, 2011 11:57 pm

With the budget cuts and $4000 being an insanely large expenditure for our program…I guess I can’t complain much about the ad itself.

Although for $3500 I could get Moniz on the beach, bust out my iphone4 camera and take a real picture of the ocean and it would look a hell of a lot better.

  129. wafan May 24, 2011 3:21 am

    Mr. Tsai . . .

It just boggles the mind to watch how and what UH says and does. If cash is a problem why not ask for donations.

Heck, run a contest at the high schools to design a Heisman campaign (rules and expectations published by UH, etc.). Surely there are schools with offset presses or high speed xerographic duplicators that would be willing to help. I am sure UH has its own duplication services, for that matter. And, with some of the quality high school videos being produced why not utilize them as well? Copy? Easy solution with Marketing and English classes.

Good programs and students would find this an exciting challenge and a great opportunity to experience a live job in a controlled business setting.

Maybe it is because, “It is not the way we do things around here.”
