The real offseason

With help from ESPN the past several years, the NFL has done a great job of always being present.

In the gap between the final game of the season (Super Bowl or Pro Bowl) and the first preseason game, there are all-star games, the combine, pro days, Jon Gruden specials, Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay, the draft, OTAs and Albert Haynesworth antics to keep football fans occupied.

And now that the draft is over, the labor issue finally feels real. The distractions have ended. The house is empty.

That sucks, doesn’t it?

* * * * *

In past years, the hours after the NFL draft were a frenzy of activity. That’s when teams and undrafted free agents scrambled to find matches.

With the lockout reinforced, such signings are put on hold.

That’s tough on former Warriors, such as safety Mana Silva, offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli, cornerback Lametrius Davis and defensive end Kamalu Umu. All surely would have secured free-agent deals. Or, at least, invitations to OTAs.

During the seventh round, the Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers called Silva, indicating they might select him.

Now, Silva said, “I have to wait for the lockout to end to get a free-agent deal.”

His plans?

“Keep working out,” he said.

* * * * *

A very happy birthday to the Queen Pin and the leader of the Screechers — Jm2375.

Okay, back to cleaning again, since the rains have stopped.

michael haynesworth? you mean albert haynesworth?

  7. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 9:26 am

It must be heartbreaking to wait and wait for the final call that never comes. What will they do next? Go back to school, perhaps?

  8. jm2375 May 1, 2011 9:34 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Hoping this idiocy gets resolved soon. Good luck to all the former Warriors trying to reach the next level.

I hate this time of year. Only one more UH series for the year, then nada till August.

  9. kawika49 May 1, 2011 9:34 am

  10. mctruck May 1, 2011 9:40 am

I guess all that booing the fb-commish got during the nfl draft, fell on deaf ears!?…we shall see.

    Hiho!

I was trying to post Jm’s birthday wish and then the Internet went kaput.

I thought Wile E. Coyote finally killed Roadrunner.

    Happy birthday Jmxxxx.

    Hauoli Lahanau, jm2375 !!!

  15. jm2375 May 1, 2011 9:44 am

Thanks ST, but I am not the leader of the Screechers, I’m just the chauffeur. And when are we going bowling? Da guy at Pali Lanes was asking about you guys.

  16. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 9:46 am

You always hear billionaires vs. millionaires, etc., etc.

But now it seems as simple as this: Owners said they needed another $1 billion from the pot, won’t show why they need it, and when they don’t get their way, they shut down business and won’t let anybody play.

Well, as it turns out, all of those municipal-funded stadiums aren’t paid off. Want to bring this to a close? Just tell the banks to call in the loans. There won’t be a lockout for very long.

  17. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 9:46 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JM!!!

  18. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 9:47 am

We have to rule out Aiea Bowl. Didn’t know the parking lot was turned into a shooting range.

  19. LizKauai -iPad May 1, 2011 9:48 am

  20. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 9:49 am

This is what happens when I try to write while watching the NBA playoffs.

  21. mctruck May 1, 2011 9:50 am

Happy Birthday….jm2375, today is your day beneath the beautiful Hawaiian skies, enjoy with those whom you love. God bless.

  22. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 9:52 am

Ray Allen makes a jumper from 15 feet. Commentator said: “Ray Allen proves he’s much more than a 3-point shooter.” I guess so. He’s a 2-point shooter, too.

  23. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 9:54 am

ST, do you think Marc Gasol will join the Knicks this summer? That would be so cool…

  24. mctruck May 1, 2011 9:55 am

damn!!!, too bad Mana Silva just lucked-out, by just a sliver!!

  25. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 9:58 am

    Gigi:

    Knicks got no money.

They’re picking up Chauncy Billups’ $14 million option. I guess the cost of bricks shots has gone up.

  26. mctruck May 1, 2011 9:59 am

that marc gasol, is a player….really hustles on every play. I like him too.

  27. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:00 am

This is my 43rd year of disliking the Celtics, but I do admire Ray Allen’s work ethic. He’s got a 29-inch waist, which, coincidentally, is my neck size.

  28. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:00 am

who do you guys think will win the natl championship?

wouldn’t it be amazing if Memphis went all the way and won?

  29. mctruck May 1, 2011 10:03 am

besides chauncey billups….I think AC held his own during the playoffs. So I think he’s in a good place for the knicks next season….maybe even a rai$e because of his performance(s).

  30. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:04 am

    Gigi:

I think too often we hope that all siblings are alike.

The Knicks say they want one brother (Marc Gasol) because they can’t get the one they really want (Pau Gasol).

Sort of like people who come here because the better writer, brother Mike, doesn’t have his own blog.

  31. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:07 am

#30- hahaha. not necessarily true, ST! Brother Mike knows ST would have the better blog with more comments so why even try.

  32. mctruck May 1, 2011 10:08 am

Memphis has got a bunch of young studs with fresh legs, so nothing is impossible for them; get chaaanch!!

  33. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:09 am

anyway, Pau is getting old. Marc plays with more energy, methinks.

  34. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:10 am

Miami’s white-out is impressive. But not as impressive choreography as Boise State’s alternating blue-orange theme. Now that’s an obedient following.

  35. SteveM May 1, 2011 10:10 am

    Good morning everyone!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JM2375 !!!

  36. mctruck May 1, 2011 10:11 am

older sibling always wants to take care of younger sibling…story book like.

  37. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:12 am

It was only a week ago people were talking about OkC having the young legs and energy.

It’s better to be young and energetic than old and tired. Well, unless you’re old and have a 29-inch waist.

  38. mctruck May 1, 2011 10:14 am

    ST, forever!!!…IMOP!!

  39. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:15 am

Boston is really struggling. Bet Brother Mike is feeling depressed.

  40. Michigan Warrior May 1, 2011 10:15 am

Happy birthday, JM2375!!! Hope you have a great Lei Day!!!

  41. mctruck May 1, 2011 10:16 am

The next Walter Kronkite…..so that makes it just a matter of a half-dzn more years, right???

  42. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:17 am

Has anybody dined at Kit n Kitchen in Puck’s Alley near UH? What is the dress code?

Hubby insists on wearing a UH Tshirt and baggy shorts.

    Ewww.

I, of course, will wear a long muu…

  43. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 10:23 am

Happy Birthday, Jm2375! All the best to you this year and every year to come.

  44. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:25 am

Mike should have his own blog. But that would probably really detract from all the others currently running now. Between ST & Mike, hard to say which has the more sublime sense of humor–but I think Mike would have the edge in number of Tsaikettes. 🙂

  46. Slugger May 1, 2011 10:28 am

    Good morning, gang!

  47. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:33 am

    Our new favorite athlete?

    Uncle Mo.

Catch him at the Kentucky Derby.

Well, catch him if you can.

  48. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:39 am

    I think hubby is Pake.

For a measly $18, he is willing to count and CARRY 3 heavy bags of cans and bottles to his car, and then pull them out of the trunk at the recyclable place. Huffing and puffing!!!

If I ever become a widow, I’ll just give them to the city for free.

  49. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:41 am

    Gigi:

That’s a lot of alcohol consumption.

  50. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:43 am

actually, he drinks 6 beers a week.

    I drink 1-3 beers a week.

And all glass bottles, not cans.

  51. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2011 10:46 am

So, that’s a max of nine bottles. But there are three bags? Hoarder?

  52. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:51 am

we have 3 trash bins in the side yard. 1 for glass bottles, 1 for plastic, and 1 for cans.

when they get full, hubby takes them to the recyclable place on Dillingham.

  53. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 10:53 am

Dillingham recyclables doesn’t count the stuff, either. They take your word for it and give you cash.

    Like I said, pake! lol

  54. kawika49 May 1, 2011 11:03 am

Come on you slackers, I get at least $15.00 a month from my cans of various beverages.

  55. el burro sabio May 1, 2011 11:04 am

Kit n Kitchen is across the street from Puck’s. Dress code is shirt, shorts, footwear. $18 should cover most of a meal for 2.

  56. kawika49 May 1, 2011 11:04 am

I hear you, I am doing my bestest tom recycle.

  57. kawika49 May 1, 2011 11:08 am

  60. Slugger May 1, 2011 11:58 am

Happy May Day! If I can tear myself away from watching the Merrie Monarch ‘auana program I recorded last night, I might head to Kapi’olani Paka to check out the Lei Day display.

ST ~ How many players are going to be graduating this month? Have Kealoha, Alex, and Greg completed their degrees, or do they have one more semester because of draft preparations?

I was talking to Alex Dunnachie & George Daily-Lyles last night at the SB Senior Night. After finals, Alex said he’ll be practicing 5 days a week if we want to watch him kick. Have to figure out when & how often unsupervised practices are being pulled together by the players. I need to keep up on my walks to campus.

What they’ll do is increase profit sharing and then lower the the team cap. So all the teams will cut their top paid players as contracts expire and/or negotiate lower salaries for them with the team cap ceiling as an excuse….

  79. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 4:45 pm

Sad about Aiea Bowl and all the shootings that happened there recently. Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s we used to have a lot of fights in the parking lot, but never and knives or shootings. Just bare fists… mano-a-mano or tita-a-tita. Aiea bowl was my father and my “house.” Between the two of us, we used to win one to three jackpots a week there with each jackpot being about $125. That was a lot of money back then. I used to also take in a jackpot or two at Kalakaua bowl and work part-time fixing the pin setters, cooking up char siu, saimin, and chop steak in the little kitchen there, just so that I could take lessons from local pros Roy Anee and Mac. Gave it up after a couple of instances of kidney stones from enjoying too many drinking parties after winning a jackpot.

For those who have not heard yet

    Bin Laden has been killed.

  81. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 1, 2011 5:22 pm

Nice pair of softball games last night. The season turned out to be different than anticipated last fall, but after tracking the team closely since the start of the 2005 season, the Wahine as usual, play a great games. Wow – seven seasons! On the other other hand, we’re wrapping up our 37th year of watching UH baseball as a couple.

One more baseball home series and then it’ll be 104 days of dead time until the opening match for Wahine volleyball – the weekend before the start of the 2011 football season.

Final note: We just turned in over 2500 HI-5 containers to raise money for the Aloha For Japan Fund Drive.

  82. Ralph May 1, 2011 5:22 pm

good news on Osama Bin Laden..Gadhafi’s son killed in Libya bombing by U.S. forces. Glorious day for U.S. forces. Who’s next?

  85. Shoko May 1, 2011 5:47 pm

Nevermind, they just did an update.

  86. Shoko May 1, 2011 5:55 pm

  87. Kekoa May 1, 2011 6:04 pm

Hmmm…Bin Laden is brought down on jm2.3’s birthday. What an odd birthday event.

Despite all the excitement of the ‘kill’ I’m hoping that your hubby was able to top that event with a scrumptious dinner.

    Happy Birthday to jmXxxx!

  88. al May 1, 2011 6:10 pm

i thought that the aiea bowl incident actually occurred downstair in parking for the aiea shopping ctr.

a month or two ago a drug bust did occur at the upstairs parking lot adjacent to the bowling alley. hopefully hpd will camp out there to discourage the incorribles.

to bad for the bowling alley and all the other merchants who have to suffer because of some.

  89. al May 1, 2011 6:11 pm

the taking down of bin laden and omar’s son seemed to have been carefully planned to send a message to all.

AL: You going to the UNLV game?

  104. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 8:21 pm

That’s the reason why there was a looong line of cars stopped at the check point for the army base near where I live.

Reason: Bin Laden was killed by US troops.

We were wondering what happened to cause the slow down.

  105. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 8:24 pm

one might pity bin Laden’s children. He was, after all, a father, but what a lousy role model he was!

Can’t feel too sorry for him.

  106. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 8:26 pm

Security is tight in Hawaii. We used to be able to drive through the base to get to Kaiser Medical Center quicker, but not anymore.

Now, the guards tell us to turn around and go the long way.

I imagine security is at high alert now.

  107. al May 1, 2011 8:31 pm

kekoa…sorry, i would have played but i was finishing off my second bowl of oxtail soup.

    slurp.

it took me four open markets and supermarkets to finally land some mustard cabbage.

couldn’t find the dried orange peel. so i used the skin of a cara cara orange.

have to admit two things, one, the oxtails at costco is the best bang for the buck as well the tenderest. two, i make a mean oxtail soup.

  108. al May 1, 2011 8:33 pm

  109. al May 1, 2011 8:34 pm

I see coupons for 1/2 off the second bowl.

quite a nice lineup developing at the market city center, hiram would have been happy; toritos, gina’s, duck lee, kaila’s, pho ktichen, grace’s, anytime cafe, sumo ramen, g sushi, quizno’s, and that shave ice place.

  113. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 8:52 pm

have you guys tried the ox tail soup at Waimalu Shopping Ctr? Not bad, but they threw in too MUCH cilantro on top.

  114. gigi-hawaii May 1, 2011 8:56 pm

going in for my 1st eye exam in more than 5 years.

    will take 1-1/2 hrs.

i can see the computer screen just fine without glasses, but I guess I should check for glaucoma, as mom has it in both eyes.

  115. BG May 1, 2011 9:45 pm

    Happy birthday wishes to JM!!!

  116. BG May 1, 2011 9:48 pm

Had a command sergeant major in Afghanistan tell me they were going to get bin-Laden soon…but that was in 2003. Glad to hear the news, but the downside is that he just became a martyr to many on the dark side and this festering issue is not going away soon. tsigh

  117. BG May 1, 2011 9:51 pm

The talk about ox-tail soup just made me hongree! With all the thunder and lightening going on, don’t be going outdoors with a tall steel pole in your hand!

  118. BG May 1, 2011 9:51 pm

Time out to make something to eat.

BG don’t you have 5 lbs of chicken soaking, lots of left over for you and Betty. You missed two great games and a lot of camaraderie last night.

  122. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 10:58 pm

    “May 1, 2011 Bin Laden… May 1, 1945 Hitler. I think May 1 is a good day.”

No Martyrdom for the terrorist living in a million dollar estate, 8 times larger than any of the buildings surrounding it. Though it may depend on how the body is disposed of by the USA. Even the Pakistani seem glad it is over and that peace and normalcy might finally return to their neighborhood.

  123. jm2375 May 1, 2011 11:00 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! Screecher made me breakfast and then we took in a movie and dinner at Ruby Tuesday. I didn’t want to drive over the mountain.

    Momentous day today.

Hope all Americans at home and abroad remain safe. Hubby will have to leave for work earlier tomorrow morning…

  124. Ralph May 1, 2011 11:01 pm

MIH and JMxxxx was born on May 1, a good day indeed and we celebrate it with Lei Day.

  125. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 11:02 pm

I suppose the US will keep Bin Laden’s body to see what kind of reprisals and demands will come their way so that they can identify their next targets. Hmmm… that said, maybe they could preserve Bin Laden’s body in a standing pork freezer until they can decide what to do with it.

  126. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 11:03 pm

    Ralph..

    True.. true.. so true…

Wanted Dead or Alive: Ayman Al-Zawahiri and Hamza Bin Laden

  128. Ralph May 1, 2011 11:06 pm

MIH Bin Laden was buried at sea. Done deal.

  129. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 11:10 pm

    Ralph…

Really? Didn’t hear that….too bad.. but I guess that way he can’t be carried down the streets in some Middle East country and made a martyr on camera, eh? Besides, it might have gotten really ugly if they brought his body back and an unruly group of people with a grudge against him got their hands on him.

  130. kawika49 May 1, 2011 11:11 pm

Oh great, how about a little Osama with you Ahi.

  131. Ralph May 1, 2011 11:14 pm

MIH Muslim custom, once dead, the deceased must be cleanse and buried within a specific timeline.

  132. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 11:18 pm

    Ralph…

Done quickly and quietly, was probably the best way. And announcing it all after the fact, better still. I’m glad this hunt is finally over and a message of US resolve was sent.

  133. Kekoa May 1, 2011 11:39 pm

Happy Birthday MIH. Long time no see! It sounds like you have a good grip on managing your own health care.

    Many happy returns my friend.

  134. Ralph May 1, 2011 11:41 pm

Brother Mike, you got to edit your piece on 2 weekend crash victims, you got Shores driving at high speed, not Mench the victim who died.

  135. Ralph May 1, 2011 11:45 pm

don’t ask Curtis Murayama for recommendation or take any journalism class from him, he gives out a lot of C grades, hard man to please. Just ask the GM for the NFL teams who spent countless hours assessing and determining which fb player was best for their teams.

  136. Kekoa May 1, 2011 11:49 pm

Congratulations to the men & women who are in constant danger dealing with the bad guys on our planet. I know 1st hand what it’s like to go to ‘parts unknown’ on shadow missions. Leaving loved ones behind without being able to tell them where you are going is prolly the hardest part of the job.

Will they be able to stand down? No. The target list is longer than you will ever know. So they soldier on. God Bless ’em all!

    Hi folks,

Just wanted to send another reminder to vote for Moanalua High School (Southwest Region)! We’ve almost caught up to Rio Rancho (7,305 vs. 7,009), and we’re down to the last 18 hours of voting. We do NOT want a repeat of last year, when our furious last-second rally fell 37 votes short …

    http://www.vans.com/customculture/

MoHS is the only Hawaiʻi school in the contest. Please vote, or pass on the message!

  139. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 11:56 pm

The dim sum and cake that I’ve indulged in these past two weekends, however, have made my blood pressure spike. Time to go back on the plan… gonna cut dairy for a spell and see what happens. Did you know that women in China hardly, 1 in 10,000 vs 1 in 6 in the USA, ever get breast cancer… and the difference in their diet is that they don’t eat dairy? Cheese, milk, yogurt, etc… nada.

  140. madeinhawaii May 1, 2011 11:57 pm

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I really don’t like questioning any thing like this. BUT.. when we are lied to daily, by all that politicians, from our states to the white house and to the Congress. I would like to see a picture of your ex boyfriend dead. but that doesn’t mean I don’t believe he is not dead. I pray to God that he is. But. I still want to see him dead. and you can’t tell me. they didn’t picture it. if they did put his body in the underwater, they filmed it.. and they have shown everyone else’d dead body why not the most hated man on the planet? I don’t blindly accept anything any more. Especially when it comes from politicians mouths.. well maybe except for Trump… lol
