Salas to the Rams, Pilares to the Panthers

Mom cried.

Dad yelled.

And former UH receiver Greg Salas yelled even louder after being the St. Louis Rams’ fourth-round selection in today’s NFL draft.

“This is a dream come true,” Salas said during the family celebration.

His father, Mark, was raised in Southern California and has cheered for the Rams most of his life. Greg Salas grew up rooting for the Raiders. “Now I’m a Rams’ fan,” he said.

“I want to thank everyone in Hawaii β€” Kealoha (Pilares), Mo, the linemen, the other receivers, the coaches,” Salas said.

Salas’ parents accompanied him on his recruiting trip in January 2006.

“Hawaii will always be special to our family,” Mark Salas said. “It’s very special to Greg. Hawaii won’t be our last destination. Hawaii will always be our first destination.”

Last year’s 112th pick received a signing bonus of $572,000.

And Kealoha Pilares has been selected by the Carolina Panthers.

Just spoke with Pilares. He was emotional when talking about his teammates, coaches (especially Rich Miano), parents, Shane Austin’s dad and the fans who befriended him on Facebook. He said Miano helped him after he received a release from the Air Force Academy. He said Austin’s dad, who is a motivational mentor, provided encouragement during his rehab from the knee injury.

Last year’s 132nd pick received a signing bonus of Β $215,512, which is a numerical palindrome.

A copule of hours after being drafted, Pilares was back in the gym, under the guidance of his trainer, Barry Toyama:

  12. NYUH April 30, 2011 7:27 am

    Great news on Salas!

The Green draft should help recruiting good RBs to Hawaii.

I wonder how much moving to the pistol helped Green?

My two brothers on the Big Island, coworker and good friend are stoked!

They’re all ready to see the Bradford/Salas Show to begin.

Are we starting to feel Mana Silva next?

  19. RedZone April 30, 2011 7:48 am

    Congrats to Packer Alex Green.

    Congrats to Ram Greg Salas.

    Congrats to Panther Kealoha Pilares.

I had no doubt that you would be drafted.

    One more to go.

  20. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 7:49 am

    …Or Laupepa Letuli?

  21. Derek April 30, 2011 7:51 am

Very nice comments about Salas this morning on the NFL draft coverage by both Todd McShay and Trent Dilfer along with some highlights, including a one handed grab as he was going into the endzone. Also, some catches against Tulsa in the Hawaii Bowl with close coverage. It was quite funny when Tilfer said the 4th round pick (Salas) is better than the 3rd round pick (Austin Pettis of Boise St.), also taken by the Rams. “If the 4th pick is better than the 3rd pick, why do they need two?” “Salas is better than Austin”. McShay, “I agree, I had Salas in the 3rd round and he has better hands, he catches everyting.”

My good friend will be happy. She’s a long time Rams’ fan.

Question: Who is the only player to throw for over 10,000 yards and ran for more than 4,000 yards in college?

Answer: Colin Kaepernick, QB, Nevada, now a SF 49ers.

  22. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 7:53 am

Everybody rips on Kaepernick. I think he’s pretty good. Not sure why he reminds me of Josh Freeman.

  23. djmitcho April 30, 2011 7:54 am

Hoping Mana Silva and Pepa can sneak into the 6th or 7th round

  24. gmahoney April 30, 2011 8:01 am

Kaepernick was a sore loser. Failed to give the Warriors their due. That’s all.

And he runs like a stork.

  25. RedZone April 30, 2011 8:02 am

Some teams haven’t picked up a db yet. Time for the ball magnet.

  26. Slugger April 30, 2011 8:03 am

Congratulations to Greg on going to the Rams!

Ho’omaikai, Kealoha! We’ll be looking for you on TV.

  27. Slugger April 30, 2011 8:04 am

    Good morning, gang!

  28. Pomai April 30, 2011 8:09 am

Old skinny legs is going to get his bell rung in the nfl. He’s a sore loser just like his coach the little general.

  29. gmahoney April 30, 2011 8:19 am

Pomai, you and I sound like bitter 49er fans.

  30. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 8:21 am

Hey, if I were a GM, I’d take Lametrius Davis, too.

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid April 30, 2011 8:22 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Byootiful! Congrats to all of our draftees so far, Green, Salas and Pilares!

  34. RedZone April 30, 2011 8:46 am

Speed in NFL won’t allow Colin to run free. I don’t know if he can make the throws thru those very tight windows.

  35. RedZone April 30, 2011 8:48 am

For some reason I really want to watch some pre-season games.

  36. RedZone April 30, 2011 8:49 am

  39. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 9:05 am

Chris Carter has been frozen on Mel Kiper’s “Best Available” list for 2 hours. Is this embarrassing for Carter or Kiper?

  40. rotation April 30, 2011 9:05 am

congrats to all warriors who got drafted thus far. you are more than deserving. thanks for a memorable 2010 season. Good Luck to the rest of the Warriors.

I LIKE IT!!! Way to go, WARRIORS!!

  42. mctruck April 30, 2011 9:11 am

As much as I hate to say it….whoever appeared on Kipers best available, has gotten drafted…sooner or later it seems, because both Salas and Green were on it; that being said, I thought Mana Silva’s name appeared somewhere on one of Kiper’s lists???

    Shiloh Keo to the Texans…

Chris Carter got picked by Pitt, #162.

  48. A-joe April 30, 2011 9:21 am

ST- any idea why the ESPN prognosticators have changed their outlook and chosen to overtly blow artificial positive smoke up every selections posterior?

In years past, no player was ever good. Each player was dragged through the mud.

I’m expecting any moment for Kiper to sprinkle flowers everywhere while Dilfer leads the panel in a warm fuzzy Kumbaya rendition.

  49. koakane April 30, 2011 9:31 am

  55. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 9:47 am

Now did Wisconsin’s John Clay get drafted? That guy was pretty good, too.

  56. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 9:48 am

Interesting how nobody wants Jeremiah Masoli anymore.

  57. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 9:51 am

Can’t believe the Jets traded up to take a special teams player.

That’s what happens when your GM was a capologist.

  58. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 9:54 am

Interesting that SMU’s receiver didn’t go higher.

  59. Ralph April 30, 2011 9:56 am

Oakland picked two on the OL, and 4 players timed sub 4.4, two were DBs, a rb and a WR. I guess Asomugha is on his way out as a free agent. E. Washington RB Taiwan Jones was timed on pro day at 4.27 and 4.35.

  60. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 10:01 am

Oakland loves speed. Doesn’t always love talent.

  61. SteveM April 30, 2011 10:05 am

    Congrats Kealoha

It’s been 25 years since a former Monarch & Warrior represented Damien in the NFL. The late Charles Aiu III was the first to represent DMHS…and he was so proud of that distinction.

  68. BG April 30, 2011 10:20 am

Thrilled for Green, Salas, and Pilares!!! I have confidence they will represent well and in helping themselves and their teams, they will give a big assist to Warrior recruiting.

I’m sorry I missed those comments! Although I believe them to be true πŸ˜€ it’s unbelievable that something like that would be said on the air. Hmmm, wonder if Dilfer’s background as a Fresno Bulldog factored into that lol

  72. BowsForever April 30, 2011 10:33 am

    Congratulations, Green, Salas and Pilares!

A big NFL draft success for the program!

    Make us proud, guys!

  73. BG April 30, 2011 10:36 am

Yesterday, I was very proud of the ‘Bows and Na Wahine. 17 strikeouts and still notch a win? Don’t like the strikeouts, but that’s the kind of intestinal fortitude I like. Was starting to have some doubts about Na Wahine, but before yesterday’s game I told myself hoping for the best was not enough. You gotta believe down to the core. I was happy that the ladies believed in themselves too, and even happier with the win! πŸ˜€

  74. BG April 30, 2011 10:39 am

Boise State softball team continuing its strong run at the end of the year. Just beat Fresno State so it takes the series. If it wins the next game it will have swept Fresno State too, besides Hawaii.

  85. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 12:16 pm

    There’s probably a list somewhere.

But not here, because I only cover UH football (and volleyball).

  86. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 12:24 pm

Ubercow from SportsHawaii said that there’s a big sale and the Rainbowtique in Manoa today..

k, just got back from the sale. lotsa merchandise, kinda like a warehouse sale. under armour jerseys are $16, (saw #6 & #11) and t-shirts $5 each.

hate ‘up to 75%’ sales, so I took a pic with my phone of what the sales were:

    $5 t-shirts

    50% off outerwear

up to 75% off aloha wear

    30% off kids & women’s wear

    75% off under armour jerseys

    40% off under armour apparel

    50% off shoes

    75% off hats

    40% off oakley

    40% off phiten

    $2 pez

    $200 authentic helmet

40% off spirit items (excluding helmets)

    Jimmy Wilson?

    Now they’re just drafting relatives.

  88. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 12:47 pm

OK, now I know who Jimmy Wilson is. Interesting story. Spent 25 months in jail before being acquitted of first-degree murder.

  90. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 12:53 pm

    Or the Buccaneers..

  91. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 1:08 pm

Give credit to Miano for pushing to get Green into the East-West game, and also for creating the UH pro day. UH didn’t give much publicity to Green o Pilares, but they did well.

  92. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 1:10 pm

    If you’re keeping track:

    Ron Lee recruited Greg Salas.

    Nick Rolovich recruited Alex Green.

    Rich Miano recruited Kealoha Pilares.

  102. Lanaiboy April 30, 2011 2:06 pm

Boise State just swept Fresno State in softball, just as it did to the Wahine. They won the 3rd match 12 to 9. Really tight race for the top of the conference standings. Now if the Wahine can pull off a similar sweep against NMS, that would be great.

  116. mctruck April 30, 2011 4:47 pm

That’s why I was rather disappointed Salas was not drafted at least in the 3rd round; in my opinion, too many wr’s who I believe Salas was much better than, were drafted ahead of him.

The WAC did pretty good in terms of players that got drafted this year with 16 total. Too bad, the WAC is soon to be gutted. MWC only had 10?

  122. Michigan Warrior April 30, 2011 5:34 pm

Just want to see if there’s any relation between Draftees and BCS voting.

Draftees by final BCS Standings (Dec 5, 2010):

    1. Auburn – 4

    2. Oregon – 1

    3. TCU – 5

    4. Stanford – 4

    5. Wisconsin – 5

    6. Ohio St – 5

    7. Oklahoma – 4

    8. Arkansas – 3

    9. Michigan St – 2

    10. Boise St – 3

    11. LSU – 6

    12. Missouri – 3

    13. Virginia Tech – 3

    14. Oklahoma St – 1

    15. Nevada – 3

    16. Alabama – 5

    17. Texas A&M – 1

    18. Nebraska – 7

    19. Utah – 1

    20. South Carolina – 2

    21. Mississippi St – 4

    22. West Virginia – 4

    23. Florida St – 3

    24. Hawaii – 3

    25. UCF – 2

Schools not in top25 BCS, with most Draftees:

    North Carolina – 9

    USC – 9

    Miami (FL) – 8

    Clemson – 6

    Georgia – 6

    Iowa – 6

    Pittsburgh – 5

  123. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 5:43 pm

Congrats to the Wahine soft bows and Basebows on the victories today!

  124. Michigan Warrior April 30, 2011 5:44 pm

UH(3, but should have been more!) had more Draftees than 32 BCS Schools(2, 1, or 0).

Hats off to our coaches, for doing a great job of recruiting and teaching our boyz, and bringing out their best!

Okay, pau for now. Gotta go sleep. Too tired. See you all tomorrow.

    Go, ‘Bows!

    Go. Wahine!

  125. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 5:49 pm

wait a minute.. dang stat board is for yesterday’s basebow game

  126. Chris Hilo April 30, 2011 5:54 pm

Auburn, Alabama, Baylor, Cal, Clemson, Colorado, UConn, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, LSU, Miami, Miss St, Nebraska, UNC, Ohio St, Oklahoma, Pitt, Stanford, TCU, Texas, USC, WVU, Wisconsin

Only 24 colleges had more players drafted into the NFL this year than UH Manoa; Oregon only sent one. When you consider the fact that big name schools have higher-rated recruits, this means that UH is one of the best schools in the country at improving athletes’ pro-potential. UH takes recruits that are not as highly-touted as most BCS schools, but does more for them – something I am sure they will use in recruiting over the next few years. This is not a one-year wonder, this is a trend spanning the past 10+ years since the run and shoot arrived.

    2000-2011 NFL Draft

UH has had as many players drafted since 2000 as Boston College and UW, and UH has had more players drafted than each of these BCS and big-name “mid-major/non-AQ” schools:

BCS: Baylor, Cincinnati, UConn, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi St, Missouri, , Oklahoma St, Rutgers, South Florida, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington St, West Virginia

Non-AQ: Boise St, BYU, Nevada, Fresno St

From what I have seen, the only two non-AQ programs with more players drafted over the past 11 drafts are Utah and TCU, both of whom are moving to BCS conferences – in other words, as of next year, UH will be #1 among all non-AQ schools in terms of players drafted since 2000.

  127. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 5:57 pm

How come North Carolina didn’t play for the national championship?

  128. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 6:00 pm

    Okay got it…. still a win by the BaseBows… 6-2…. whoo hooo…

  129. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 6:01 pm

    There are some life-defining moments.

For instance, if Laupepa Letuli had been drafted, he would impress in training camp and have a long career.

    Now?

Just don’t know. Because now it’s up to his agent to pitch him to the right team and show he deserves a chance.

Letuli is a talent who can do some amazing things. He just needs a chance.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don’t get that chance. There are a lot of amazing basketball players who never played in the NBA.

  130. Chris Hilo April 30, 2011 6:01 pm

This also destroys the myth that playing for Hawaii in the WAC with the run and shoot hurts your draft stock. If that were the case, Hawaii’s draft numbers would not be outperforming their recruiting rankings. If anything, the belief that the run and shoot and playing in the WAC hurts draft stock is more damaging to UH than the run and shoot and playing in the WAC is to athletes.

  131. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 6:05 pm

I like Shiloh Keo. And anyone who spends any time with him would like him, too.

But on that one play β€” a legal one, as it turns out β€” Rodney Bradley suffers a major injury that alters his career path.

Eighteen months later, Keo gets drafted and Bradley doesn’t.

If that play doesn’t happen, Bradley gets drafted this year.

    Life is complexing sometimes.

  132. Stephen Tsai April 30, 2011 6:08 pm

    Well said, Chris Hilo.

  133. RedZone April 30, 2011 6:31 pm

    Who would have thunk?

    UH 3 – BYU 0

  134. el burro sabio April 30, 2011 6:46 pm

#132 – it was stated in the past that it was a legal play, but when did a leg whip become legal?

  135. jm2375 April 30, 2011 7:03 pm

    Congrats to the BaseBows!

Congrats to the Wahine on their win in the 1st game today!! 2nd game – 2-1 UH bottom 4th

make that 4-1 UH. NaMaSU on it’s 3rd pitcher.

  137. Unkanesson April 30, 2011 7:11 pm

Mahalo jm2375 for the softball update. I wonder when we’ll be able to get streaming audio from AM1500 radio like we do 1420? Those of us who can’t pick it up over the air have no other way to hear the game broadcasts. I listened to the Bows beat Fresno today, a great win. But I’ve been frustrated trying to get any news on the softball team. No reports on the Star-Advertiser’s web site, nor anywhere else I could find. But I’m happy to be able to count on the Warrior Beat bloggers to pass along the info. Mahalo hou!

  138. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 7:26 pm

I didn’t even know the Wahine were playing a second game today until jm2375 posted the ongoing score..

  139. jm2375 April 30, 2011 7:27 pm

unkanesson – #138 – check the livestats on the UH website. According to ESPN 1420, they’re working on a ESPN 1500 site and mobile apps. I asked about an android app, and they said they’re discussing it. They have a iphone app.

(Note: the livestats for the basebows game is still for yesterday’s game…)

  140. jm2375 April 30, 2011 7:29 pm

mih – it’s Senior Night!! I wanted to go, but the blog mascot’s checkup took priority.

  142. WarriorMojo April 30, 2011 7:33 pm

    Re #132 and #135

Gonna have to agree with el burro on this one. I know that the play was reviewed, but it was a classic leg whip, which has always been banned as far as I know. I’ll concede that Keo probably threw his leg out there trying to make a play without any intent to injure RB, but it was still a play with a high likelihood of injury — that’s exactly why leg whips are banned — therefore it will always be a dirty play in my mind.

But for the injury, Rodney Bradley would have been regarded as one of the best WRs to ever play at UH. He had everything, size, speed, hands, fearlessness. Now he is in the class with Junior Lopati as guys who had potentially brilliant careers cut short by cheap shots.

  143. Unkanesson April 30, 2011 7:36 pm

I did check the livestats page, and also the S-A’s scoreboard page, but it was all yesterday’s news.

Thanks for the info on the future ESPN1500 site. I’m not smartphone equipped yet, so I use my laptop as a radio for UH sports when they aren’t on TV. With K5 sports going under soon, I’ll be relying on the laptop more and more in the future. Don’t have digital cable, so no can pay per view. Auwe…

  144. madeinhawaii April 30, 2011 7:37 pm

Dang! .. NaMaSu caught up… 4-4… top of the sixth

  145. Guy in the office April 30, 2011 7:42 pm

Re 143: Totally agree. Keo overran the play and instinctively stuck out his leg because it’s all he could do or Bradley was gone. I doubt he meant to hurt Bradley; it was a split-second decision that, unfortunately, wrecked Bradley’s career. In retrospect, maybe Bradley should have taken a redshirt year to fully recover. Didn’t he have that option?

  146. Guy in the office April 30, 2011 7:45 pm

Re: 144. The livestats on the UH athletics web site works fine. Had to reload it to start. Try it again.

  147. Unkanesson April 30, 2011 8:08 pm

Thanks, Guy. Took me awhile, but I’ve got the Sidearm Stats running. Frustrating not to be able to hear, but it’s better than nothing. Runner on first, one out, bottom of the 7th. Let’s go Wahine!!

  148. Hank April 30, 2011 8:10 pm

The emergence of Davon Bess imho may have helped Greg and Kealoha…their (as well as Alex) eventual success will award the Warriors of the future.

  149. Hank April 30, 2011 8:12 pm

Been a Ram fan for many years…excited to see Salas in Blue and Gold catching passes from Sam Bradford.

I think he has a legitimate chance to start.

  152. Unkanesson April 30, 2011 8:24 pm

Now I can get back to work…feeling good!!

#123 Michigan Warrior & #127 Chris Hilo thanks for the draft information. This is why even though I don’t always post I always read this blog every day.

  154. Lanaiboy April 30, 2011 8:49 pm

The Bows bats have come alive (but not all the way), especially Iwata and Rodriquez. Jenna has shown that she can be an effective relief pitcher; she won both games today. Very useful in the postseason. Guess who was sitting by meβ€”Donovan the AD; Dave Shoji was there too supporting the Wahine.

Posted on: April 30, 2007 at 9:55:51 am

    AD is being evaluated

For the first time in memory, UH’s athletic director is being evaluated by his staff.

UH’s Human Resource Department recently sent on-line evaluation forms to about 20 members of the athletic department. They are asked to specifically evaluate the performance of the athletic director.

The AD is out of town, having attended this past weekend’s Penn Relays. He will attend the WAC meetings this week.

I’ll leave JMI to Maryanne, she seems to be his type.

Every time I think of Maryanne, Ricky Nelson songs start popping into my head. And I think of Maryanne often, but I’ll give her up for JMI. I’m too young to be with a woman like Maryanne, she deserves a man, not a young lad like me.

One of the many things I learned this past weekend:

Dont come and make “house” in a stadium that is NOT YOURS and let your damn kids throw trash over the railing.

  186. al May 1, 2011 12:57 am

kazz…i am surprised that you didn’t accidently bump them over the railing.

  187. SteveM May 1, 2011 1:16 am

    RE: 181

No worry Al, we arrived already. You must have forgot. πŸ˜†

  188. al May 1, 2011 1:20 am

stevem…i’m not quite there yet. you must have flunked several times.

  189. Kazz on Droid_X May 1, 2011 1:23 am

    Al,

The kids? No. Not their fault they werent taught any better.

  190. al May 1, 2011 1:23 am

i need a new laptop. this one’s got old age problems.

    keyboard is malfunctioning.

tried cleaning to no avail and i broke a couple of keys.

so i suppose tbree years later i got my monies worth. can hand it down to #2.

i’ve been buying toshiba’s and have been satisfied with them.

  191. al May 1, 2011 1:24 am

were they cheering for the home team or the visitors?

  192. al May 1, 2011 1:26 am

    kazz

    my storm2 is a piece of s**t. i see you’ve upgraded to a droid x….any good?

or should i spend the big bucks on a thunderbolt?

  193. Ralph May 1, 2011 1:28 am

Crucial softball series in Las Cruces next weekend, WAC #1 Boise State at 15-3 visits the the #2 Aggies at 14-4 for a three game series. Fresno is 13-5, and Na Wahine 11-7. FSU faces Nevada, while Na Wahine takes on San Jose State on the road.

  194. Ralph May 1, 2011 1:29 am

Al wait for the Bionic, should be out this summer. Suppose to be a cut above the thunderbolt.

  195. Ralph May 1, 2011 1:32 am

Verizon rep said there are two 4G sites on Oahu, Mililani and the Airport area, so you’ll be paying for an upgrade that will do wonders for you when you travel to the mainland, in Hawaii, you pay 4G price for 3G reception.

  196. al May 1, 2011 1:34 am

ralph…for hawaii, i don’t matter who wins except for themselves.

bsu, nmsu, fsu, reno, who wins don’t mean nothing.

wahine are in must win come tourney time or no ncaa’s this year. they won’t get the call unless they win the tourney. chances are probably slim to none if the come in second in the wac tournament even with the good finish last year. there is no way that the wac gets three slots. two is an outside shot if the #1 seed is the runner up.

  197. al May 1, 2011 1:35 am

    who makes the bionic?

  198. al May 1, 2011 1:35 am

    199

  199. al May 1, 2011 1:36 am

    200

  200. SteveM May 1, 2011 1:43 am

Al — I must have forgoten. What grade were we in?

BTW, I gave Peaches my MacBook (PowerBook G3 from 2004) when we parted last year. Loaded her 8+ GB of music on it so she could rip her backup CDs. Chatted with her on Facebook last month. She is still using it.

  201. Slugger May 1, 2011 1:48 am

Good night, gang! ‘swonderful to hang out with you all tonight.

  204. Ralph May 1, 2011 1:54 am

Oklahoma vs Texas, SB, Sunday at 6 a.m. on ESPNU

  205. al May 1, 2011 1:57 am

    thanks ralph.

  206. Ralph May 1, 2011 1:59 am

I think the WAC will get at least 2 into the NCAA. Four teams are close, Boise, FSU, NMST and UH, so I think the WAC champs and number two goes. A few years back, 4 WAC teams made it when La Tech won the WAC championship played in Hawaii.

  207. Ralph May 1, 2011 2:13 am

Al I parked next to the pond, no Steve. I knew then I wasn’t going to have lunch, luckily we had a potluck after the DH.

ST waited for the call that never came, but WSF was at the game standing at the second level of the third base ramp.

  208. ζ„Ÿζƒ…ζŒ½ε›ž May 1, 2011 2:21 am

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  217. Garret May 1, 2011 5:39 am

Congratulations to Salas and Pilares! Salas went later than I thought (I feel sick to think about how Pettis will be his teammate and get a bigger signing bonus and salary), but I was happy with Pilares’ position considering the NFL is usually so concerned about injuries.

  218. Garret May 1, 2011 5:41 am

The Portland Tribune had a nice 2-page feature on Alex Green.

This process consisted of non-stop workouts, phone calls and flying to visit nearly every major football city in the country to showcase his skills.

The one twist in this whole scenario: He had never visited or officially spoken to the Packers organization as a real possibility.

β€œCan’t really describe how I feel,” he said. β€œI want to thank the great Lord for the many blessings. (Also) my family for the courage, friends for the confidence and the great town of (Portland) for the support.”

  219. mctruck May 1, 2011 5:48 am

With three(3) former Warriors being drafted over the past several days, one would think that poor Dave Reardon would be able to keep up with what round each player was selected??…reading his column this morning, he reports that Salas was picked,(#114), and not,(#112). Com’n Dave, you can do better than that.

  220. Michigan Warrior May 1, 2011 5:56 am

    Off Topic…

There’s been mention, on occasion, about Korean Dramas here on the B-Log. I don’t know if it’s too late or not, but there’s an article in the paper about a contest. Here’s the link to the story:

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/features/20110501__Korean_drama_fans_have_chance_to_win_in_drawing.html

Dinner and possibly some autographed items from Korean celebrities for the contest winners…

Oh, and gratz to Wahine Softball on that chicken-skin sweep of former 1st place NMSU! Mahalo again to our seniors!

  223. Deon Kehr May 1, 2011 6:08 am

I don’t bookmark sites but i will bookmark this! LOL!

  224. Kekoa May 1, 2011 6:17 am

Woke up still feeling the warmth of a great Wahine win!

Mahalo to Pomai, Kazz, Ralph, Slugger, sj, and his better half. These are the people who raised this Booster club from the dead. The rest of us get to support them and help grow membership…gladly…I might add.

Last night was the culmination of their supreme effort to lift the spirit of Rainbow SB. To feel the sincere appreciation of the players, coach Coolen and the parents was a *chicken skin* moment.

I knew it was gonna be a winnah-winnah chicken dinnah nite, wen Homey-papa joe, 808Ike, & DPK made their grand entrance! There’s your real ‘athletic supporters!’

Both games showed the grit and determination of this 2011 team. It was fun to see them scratch out the hits when they needed them, and underscore their effort with some bee-u-ti-full dingers out in dead center!

They did indeed, Finish Strong last nite.

  225. Kekoa May 1, 2011 6:29 am

…and so I would be remiss if I let this morning go by without mentioning the fuud at last nite’s pot luck party. Two words…incredibly deelicioso! (it was the crab salad, I’m tellin’ ya!)

I’m sure sj-macro will have some photos posted later of the entire event.

  226. gmahoney May 1, 2011 6:43 am

#174 DPK, glad to finally meet you. Finally a face to a name. My granddaughter said it was the best day in her life. She gaive a lei to her favorite player, Stephanie Ricketts and got to talk story with her later.

  227. Kekoa May 1, 2011 7:07 am

Gmahoney ~ Your grandkids were really living the dream last nite! They were so excited to be able to ‘hang’ with the players after the game. They asked me about the clubhouse when we were on the field. It was the first time they could see the room at ground level. That look of wonderment was a money shot.

It was nice to see that you have instilled Warrior pride in their upbringing.

  228. LizKauai (marco) May 1, 2011 7:09 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

    Yea, yea, yea!!!

So happy the Wahine pulled it up and pulled it off!

    Mahalo to the everyone!

Back to Nuuanu for the last day of our Hawaii Baha’i National Convention…

Everyone taking care of business 😎

    Hi Ho!

  229. gmahoney May 1, 2011 7:26 am

Kekoa, Honey girl was still on cloud nine at 11:00 last night on the way home, way past her bed time. But after seeing the games and talking with the players, she wants to wear UH Wahine green one day. Hope Coolen will be coaching for at least another 13 years!

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I wanted to go to the softball game last night but family wanted to have a birthday party – duty calls!

Congrats to Kazz, Pomai, SJ, Slugger, Ralph for the great job forming the Wahine softball boosters club – and a bigger hip=hip=hooray to the Wahine.

    Go Wahine

  237. papajoe2 May 1, 2011 8:44 am

tommui #236, sooo much food last night that you could have had the party at the games. Except finding a seat for everyone to watch 2 exciting games was hard to come by. The games itself was the entertainment. Would have entertained anyone, no matter what age or gender.

  238. papajoe2 May 1, 2011 8:46 am

HAPPY MAY DAY, LEI DAY, SUNDAY MORNING TO EVERYONE!
