Green to Titletown

With the next-to-last pick of the third round, the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers picked former UH running back Alex Green.

Green’s mother, Phyllis Smith, said they were ready to call it a night with a few picks remaining in the round. But then Green’s name “popped up on the (TV) screen. … We yelled so much I think we woke up the entire neighborhood.”

Green was picking up his daughter, Harlym, at her mother’s house when he received a call from the Packers.

“Are you having a good day?” Green said he was asked.

Green reponded: “Yes.”

“It’s about to get better,” he was told.

Soon after, the Packers announced their selection on the ESPN2 telecast.

Green was selected with the 96th pick. The Cincinnati Bengals took cornerback Brandon Ghee with the 96th pick in the 2010 draft. Ghee signed a four-year contract, with a signing bonus of $648,000.

Of course, facilities and academic services are important.

But as high school counselors always say: If you want to go to college, you’ll find a way to go to college. It might take 40 years or on-line classes (or, in the case of one of my kids, a History 150 class on channel 55). This is America. Everybody has a chance to go to college. But not many get to attend on a football scholarship.

And every college football player — no matter what size, shape or medical history — harbors, at some point, the NFL dream. And why not? Early in his UH career, James Fenderson was a walk-on living in his car. He ended up playing in the NFL. Lawrence Wilson was the fifth nose tackle on a depth chart that went only three deep. He ended up as the last cut in the Baltimore Ravens’ training camp.

With stars in their eyes, recruits are aware of which college programs can lead to NFL rosters. The Warriors’ staff includes guys who have played in the NFL (Rich Miano, Ashley Lelie) and coached there (Greg McMackin, Dick Tomey, Mouse Davis). Offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich and running backs coach Brian Smith were in NFL training camps. The Warriors try to help. They run practices the way the pros do. They host scouts for an on-campus junior day. They stage an annual pro day. The biggest sellers, though, are the players who are drafted. And that, of course, is where Greg Salas and Alex Green can shape the future of UH recruiting. We’ll find out today and tomorrow.

* * * * *

There isn’t much of a difference between Salas’ performances against BCS and non-BCS opponents. As a starting slotback, Salas averaged 8.6 catches per game against non-BCS teams. His BCS average was 6.75. But against BCS teams, he averaged 16.44 yards per reception; against non-BCS, his average was 15.32.

The NBC telecast was interesting. They said they were going to turn off the studio mics. Meredith Vieira then decided to do speed commentary before the mics were turned off.

A lot of guys watched the wedding.

Kekaula kept grumbling about the wedding … until 1 in the morning.

It was a spectacle, and those are fun to watch.

The analysis was pretty good, too. From a back-view shot, an analyst was able to identify the dress designer by the use of the lace.

    Phil Simms couldn’t do that.

i don’t get it, why watch a wedding of someone you don’t know?

at one o’clock i say, oh now what?

is this the honeymoon you are watching?

the boss quips with that glare, “no, the birth of their first child!”

miffed, i got to have a comebacker.

so this morning she is watching the replay…here’s my chance i thought.

  52. warriorsun April 29, 2011 11:43 am

great stat on mr primetime– greg salas. doesnt matter who he went up against. i would venture to say his drop-off in catches for bcs teams was primarily due to his qb being sacked or hurried by a better rush. his yac against bcs teams is a better barometer–however, that was not included in the stats published, but maybe inferred by his higher average per catch.

Traffic collision claims life of former San Jose State star pitcher.

WESTMINSTER – A 23-year-old woman died after being rear-ended on the I-405 during a multi-vehicle crash, Orange County Coroner’s Office officials said Thursday.

Authorities say Deanna Mauer was in a 2006 Hyundai that was rear-ended in the No. 1 lane of the northbound I-405 near Edwards Street just before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Mauer was a four-year letter winner on the Fountain Valley High School softball team. Mauer went on to play at Central Arizona College and at San Jose State, where she majored in health science.

Sitting at an airport…I hope that Salas and Green are drafted before I land tonight. It would be great for 1 or both of them to be drafted today…recruits look at the NFL draft and this year there weren’t that many non-AQ players taken in the 1st round.

  59. Garret April 29, 2011 12:05 pm

Looks like Karl Benson is trying to bail on the WAC and get the Fiesta Bowl position. If he becomes the head of the Fiesta Bowl, I’m guessing that the BCS would soon kick out the Fiesta Bowl and replace it with the Cotton Bowl…that would be a nice parallel for all the teams Benson lost in the WAC.

Big East senior associate commissioner Nick Carparelli, Pac-12 associate commissioner Kevin Weiberg and WAC commissioner Karl Benson all have either been mentioned in college circles or are interested. Fiesta officials here for the BCS meetings would not discuss any specific names of candidates.

It is not known whether any of three is on the Fiesta’s short list. But it is known that at least Benson is interested in pursuing the job.

    http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270202/28909079

  60. Garret April 29, 2011 12:06 pm

Nice spin…Benson should get credit for having so many schools leave the WAC.

Benson deserves credit for doggedly keeping one of the lower-tier conferences together over the years. In May 1998, he was flat on his back on the couch after eye surgery as the 16-team WAC began to crumble underneath him. Half the teams bolted to start the Mountain West in 1999. In the last year the WAC has lost Boise State, Hawaii, Fresno State and Nevada. All four will leave the league within the next two seasons. Benson and the WAC have kept the league alive adding Texas State and Texas-San Antonio in future years.

the donald is worth $8 b and has one of the more successful shows on tv and that demonstrates he knows how to run a business. the ability to solve problems are inferred. obama, has zero experience in business and has demonstrated how to ruin an economy by monetizing our debt, printing more money while increasing spending. as the morons in hawaii are learning, you dont cut your deficit by spending more and growing govt…..taxing the wealthy increases regressive taxes, which everyone, including those on fix incomes–eventually pay.

  68. Garret April 29, 2011 12:39 pm

Trump knows how to run a business? Here is a partial list of his bankruptcies:

1991: Unable to pay a $3.5 bil loan, he declared business bankruptcy. His investors lost millions but his personal assets were protected. Until less than a year later…

1992: Trump Plaza Hotel folded and Trump declared bankruptcy. Trump had to give up many of his assets including the Trump Shuttle.

2004: Trump filed for personal bankruptcy. He gave up the CEO title to his business and reduced his ownership of his Hotel & Casino business to 27%.

2009: Trump filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, since he had just $50 mil in assets and owed $500 mil in debt.

Trump has lived a lavish lifestyle and has always done well for himself, but his investors have repeatedly lost millions because his businesses failed. He has shown that he CANNOT balance a budget, but he gets away with it by declaring bankruptcy and walking away from his debt…but that is *not* what a country can do to solve its problems.

  69. Garret April 29, 2011 12:42 pm

Trump has one of the more successful shows on TV?

List of the top 20 shows…his show is not on the list of course:

    http://www.zap2it.com/tv/ratings/zap-weekly-ratings,0,7508066.htmlstory

Trump not only doesn’t have one of the highest rated shows on TV, his show normally comes in THIRD during his timeslot…and consider that for half of his TV show, there are only 3 TV networks operating (Fox ends an hour early).

    Political party loyalty…

Like back when Kerry tried to run against Dubyah.

Democrata had their faith in the talking tree from Lord of the Rings as if he was a suitable candidate.

Republican backers should learn from that.

Vince McMahon, Jr., who’s company survived a $400,000,000.00 loss due to his XFL experiment still flourishes today.

Based on that alone, McMahon would be a better candidate for the Presidency for the Republican Party. 😆

…..misleading what u say about the donald, he has a net worth exceeding $8b.

he will be announcing in may along with his personal worth–hopefully, the american public won’t be waiting two years.

didnt obama just bail out banks, the auto industry and wallstreet?

your cite of tv shows is broad-based and does not include particular categories, which advertisers look at.

as an example fox news is #1 among cable news shows but has less viewership than many cable shows and network news.

the point being, the donald is a serious rep presidential primary candidate and according to the latest polls (rasmussen) is a frontrunner. i wouldnt be so dismissive and for many americans, he says what many feel…..we shall see, pelosi dismissed the tea party as an astro-turf movement–where is she now? lol!

#82 I think you reversed the order of Bailouts. Bush gave the Banks/Insurance/Financial Industry the monies in 2009, better known as TARP. Yes Obama bailed out the Domestic Auto Industry to stem the flow of unemployment and extend unemploymrnt insurance to stabilize the economy. Oh and by the way; Most of the investments made in the Auto companies have been repaid.

Think of it this way Bush=Trump. Bush messed it up and Obama has tried to clean it up; with not a peep and a lot of resistance from Bushes allies.

#85 u r correct about the subprime bailouts (tarp) but challenged on your interpretation of obama’s administration whom has spent more money than all presidents combined.

true, obama inherited a deficit which both parties had a hand in esculating. he made it worse. also, the 2008 obama promised transparency. promised to bring down unemployment and while a sitting president dismissed the recommendations of his own deficit comission he appointed. his stimulus bill was an abject failure and testimony that our private sector, not govt, needs to get healthy for our economy to improve.

further, the election in 2012 will place significantly more democrat senators at risk for reelection than republicans. if 2010 was any poll-signal, by the time hawaii voters cast their votes in 2012, both houses as well as the resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW will be decided and obama declared a one-term wonder.

since when is corporate bankruptcy illegal?

Garret did NOT say BKs were “illegal”, he just pointed out that while you were busy saying Trump is a good candidate for the Presidency based on his business dealings, he pointed out facts that said he is not bulletproof.

Don’t put words into people’s posts. Now, if you are just making a general statement that BKs are not illegal that is fine, but kind of out of place since, as I mentioned, NO ONE said or inferred it was illegal for Trump to file BK.

newspapers go bankrupt and so did hawaiian air? and?

…..misleading what u say about the donald, he has a net worth exceeding $8b.

he will be announcing in may along with his personal worth–hopefully, the american public won’t be waiting two years.

There is NOTHING misleading about factual information as he laid out. Garret never said anything about Trump’s net worth NOT being $8,000,000,000,000.00. His post was in response to your:

    warriorsun:

    April 29th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

the donald is worth $8 b and demonstrates he knows how to run a business.

How you gonna run a business when you cannot pay your debts?

You can dance around the opposing questions as much as you want and rant on and on about what Obama did or didn’t do, which are INDEED factual, but at least present some CONCRETE factual information on why you believe:

Trump presents a better solution to this country’s financial woes. If you want to essentially say “Anyone but Obama” that’s fine. I’m not going to lie, things are NOT getting better and don’t appear to be getting better, but just because Trump wears the same political party colors as yours doesn’t mean he is a flat out “better” solution.

There, you all just saw the most unbiased political statement of the day.

  95. Kazz April 29, 2011 1:46 pm

I got $600 something dollars from Uncle Sam in 2008. Others received the same or more.

I don’t think that worked either.

    Kazz, Pomai,

The thunda in the area has stopped. I can see some blue skies in the west and over the Ko’olaus behind Manoa, but still some grey clouds over UH. Hope it moves off.

You cannot seem to get around an argument without getting sidetracked from the issue at hand.

To that, I don’t what to say. For an individual that posts in a manner that portrays an educated individual, you retort to things like this. You always have. 😆 😆 😆 😆

I don’t pretend to be what I am not and post in a manner reflecting just that.

    To Warriorsun,

Trump is not a real businessman– just because he has a reality TV show. His reputation as a businessman is poor. He is a good promoter, though– good for some sound bites.

Opra beats the pants off of him. So that makes her a much, much better businessperson than Trump. But I would not want either one to be President (on your standard– I guess it would be Oprah).

You obviously have no idea what an ad hominem argument is, otherwise you would have realized the irony/idiocy of your post.

  142. Ralph April 29, 2011 3:13 pm

so Oakland picks Wisnewski as a potential center candidate, his uncle is a former Raider and the team’s OL coach, where does Satele fit in this situation.

  143. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2011 3:18 pm

I’d rather take Salas over Pettis.

  144. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2011 3:19 pm

He was noted for his immaturity before the draft, but when he was selected as the 13th player, he didn’t seem happy at all.

  217. Derek April 29, 2011 4:38 pm

Pretty shocking that Oregon doesn’t have a single player taken in the first 3 rounds. You are talking about the #2 ranked team last year.

ST, 110%…that’s like another whole discussion…but anyhoo, I like that the draftees will all get a chance to pursue their dreams. The past couple of days is like an prolonged Christmas for the NFL hopefuls. Exciting times….hoping for more Warriors to be selected.

  241. tommui April 29, 2011 5:16 pm

Would like to see Salas and Pilares drafted soon.

But going the free agent route could be better – you get to look at the teams and find out what your best chances are to make the team and that may be better than being chosen at the bottom of the draft.

Mahalo once again, everyone! I need to go relax. Gave up drinking in Korea, back in ’91… so, just gonna chill with da kids, den go sleep.

    See you all tomorrow!

  244. Shoko April 29, 2011 5:31 pm

    MW,

Mahalo for the stats. Relax with the kids and reminisce about the good times. I’m sure your Dad is doing da same. 🙂

  245. Kekoa April 29, 2011 5:32 pm

Rest easy MW. All our prayers are with you my brother. I’m glad you were able to make it home for a good visit with your ohana.

  246. Shoko April 29, 2011 5:35 pm

I really think whoever drafts Salas tomorrow will be getting a good deal. As I always believed, its not where you get drafted, but what team you selects you. Money always come when you produce and surprise those so-called pundit and prognosticators. See you guys on Saturday!

  247. wafan April 29, 2011 5:37 pm

I would have never thought I would ever like Colin Kaepernick. Now that he’s with the 49ers

(my favorite team), somehow I like the guy. How things change in a day. Hoo-ah!!!

  251. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2011 6:57 pm

    Derek:

Kaepernick is really a good guy. Talked to him several times, and he’s really nice.

  252. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2011 6:58 pm

    Shoko:

Salas will be good because he can catch the ball. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know that’s a receiver’s job. But you’d be surprised at how few natural receivers there are.

  253. pcwarrior April 29, 2011 6:59 pm

Congratulations MR GREEN. We are so proud of you!!! Now I have a reason to follow the Packers!!!

  254. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2011 7:02 pm

    From the Green Bay Press-Gazette:

The Green Bay Packers suddenly have a crowded backfield.

Throw Alex Green of the University of Hawaii into the mix. General manager Ted Thompson used his third-round pick, No. 96 overall, on the 6-foot-0¼, 225-pound halfback.

As the roster stands today, it means the position group includes veteran starter Ryan Grant, up-and-comer James Starks, last year’s in-season pickup Dimitri Nance and short-yardage runner John Kuhn. Plus, there’s potential free-agent Brandon Jackson, whose value as the team’s third-down back shouldn’t be underestimated.

Taking Green almost surely means one or more players from that group won’t return, but perhaps there’s room for an extra halfback in 2011 if the Packers are willing to short another position, possibly fullback, which has been overloaded the past two seasons.

“In this league, you can’t have enough running backs,” said Jerry Fontenot, who took over as the Packers’ running backs coach in February. “It pretty much seems like running back by committee is blanketing the league right now. We’re no different than any other team. I’m happy as heck to have Alex Green as part of our team now. He’s a kid that has some versatility and can catch the ball out of the backfield. He’s an explosive back. For his size, there weren’t many guys coming out in the draft that can run like he can.”

In his lone year as Hawaii’s starter, the former junior college player rushed for 1,199 yards, averaged 8.2 yards per carry and had 18 touchdowns last season. In a pass-heavy spread offense, he also caught 27 passes for 363 yards (a 13.4-yard average) as a senior.

“I was used in a lot of different aspects in the game, especially blocking in the Hawaii system, the run-and-shoot,” Green said. “I caught a lot of swing routes out of the backfield (and ran) a lot of draws and inside zones, so I was used quite a bit in every aspect.”

The native of Portland, Ore., has experience in a more traditional offense, too. He ran from an I-formation at Butte Community College, the same Northern California junior college that produced Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Green, who said he went the JUCO route because of academic issues, said he never met Rodgers but did play with his younger brother, Jordan, at Butte.

At the combine, Green ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds, did the vertical jump in 34 inches and the broad jump in 9-6. Thompson also attended Green’s Pro Day when the Hawaii prospects worked out in Southern California.

“He’s a big back, he runs, he catches, he’s got very good feet, very good instincts,” Thompson said. “He plays in a spread offense. We saw him at the East-West game. He got really good exposure there. He was clearly the class of the group in the East-West practices.”

Green was the third straight offensive player taken in this draft by Thompson after he took Mississippi State tackle Derek Sherrod in Thursday’s first round and Kentucky receiver/kick returner Randall Cobb in Friday’s second round.

All three come into crowded positions, where immediate need was only moderate, but none appears more crowded now than running back.

Perhaps the Green pick came with an eye on the future. Grant is expected to return from a serious ankle and leg injury that occurred in the regular-season opener last September and ended his season after only eight carries, but he is entering the final year of his contract and will be 29 years old by season’s end.

Starks, a sixth-round pick a year ago, is a promising prospect after his late-season contributions, including a 123-yard game in the playoff opener at Philadelphia, but he hasn’t done enough to show he’s not an injury risk after missing most of his rookie year while recovering from an offseason hamstring injury and all of his senior year of college because of a shoulder injury.

Jackson’s return isn’t out of the question. Depending on the rules for free agency, he’ll either be restricted or unrestricted. Either way, the Packers value his ability to pickup blitzes and protect Rodgers so much so that they might considering bringing him back.

Or perhaps Green could fill that role. First, he’ll need to prove he can take on blitzing linebackers and defensive backs plus shore up his ball security. He fumbled eight times in 271 touches during his two years at Hawaii.

“I had a couple of problems early on in my career at Hawaii, high pad-level issues,” Green said. “So I worked on that quite a bit and got it fixed by the end of the season.”

  263. Slugger April 29, 2011 7:59 pm

what happened at the Wahine softball game? I’m home watching Merrie Monarch…

  264. SteveM April 29, 2011 8:05 pm

    Wahine-Namasu tied at 1.

    Going into extra innings.

  265. Guy in the office April 29, 2011 8:12 pm

Wahine down 2-1 entering bottom of 8th. Unfortunately, error with two outs in top of 7th allowed NMSU to tie score and send it to extra innings.

  266. Guy in the office April 29, 2011 8:15 pm

Iwata doubles in tying run with no outs in 8th.

  267. al April 29, 2011 8:31 pm

so #2 son and i were positioning to bet who would get it drafted first from the warriors. we both argued and both agreed in the end that alex green would go first.

i think salas will now get plucked in the late fourth or fifth round.

i see pilares going in the sixth round.

and in a real surprise mana silva getting tagged in the seventh round maybe by the black n silva/

  268. al April 29, 2011 8:33 pm

talking about the black and silva…i see samson having his best year in 2011, if it ever gets off. nothing like getting a high draft pick to push him and bring out that fire that he showed in his four years in manoa.

  269. Curt April 29, 2011 8:33 pm

Anyone have an update on da Wahine?

  270. Guy in the office April 29, 2011 8:35 pm

    2-2 after nine innings.

  271. al April 29, 2011 8:36 pm

congrats to the basebows on a very impressive win over the fresnecks.

  272. Curt April 29, 2011 8:37 pm

Thanks Guy in the office. Long gone is the team that mercy-ruled others left and right. How can a team drop off that much?

  273. al April 29, 2011 8:38 pm

curt you gonna try for 300 tonight?

  274. Curt April 29, 2011 8:40 pm

    It’s like a 220 average bowler now averaging 105. Someting’s not wright.

  275. Guy in the office April 29, 2011 8:44 pm

Curt: NMSU is 14-1 in WAC, and took a TEAM batting average of .344 into the game. Ricketts had a no-no through five so actually Wahine playing tough.

  276. Curt April 29, 2011 8:45 pm

    al,

#273 You kidding? I no likee get boned again and again. I feel like Charlie Brown tinkin’ this is it; I’m weally goin to kick da ball dis tyme. Wright al. U da man. Every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess, that al iz da man.

  281. Curt April 29, 2011 8:52 pm

Best wishes to the d1, Bulla/Beast, and MW ohanas.

  282. al April 29, 2011 8:53 pm

curt…ok. i’ll relent and let you take #300. (hee, hee.)

  283. Curt April 29, 2011 8:55 pm

Props to Alex Green! I would think that his blocking and his pass catching is what separated him from the pack. Green Bay really needs a back that can help protect their QB.

  284. Guy in the office April 29, 2011 8:56 pm

Aguirre singles with bases loaded and one out in 10th, Wahine win, 3-2.

  285. gmahoney April 29, 2011 8:57 pm

    Yay Wahine! Way to battle!

  286. Curt April 29, 2011 8:57 pm

  291. SteveM April 29, 2011 9:02 pm

Last night I mentioned the Franki Valli and Four Seasons mimic group on a cruise ship. In 2005 there was a pair of lounge entertainers on a 10-day Norwegian Wind cruise that I really liked. They sang mostly 50’s-80’s songs. Checking last night, they have web site now. Jose & Patti…

    http://www.joseandpatti.net/

Jose (Jo-say) played guitar and used a laptop to play MIDI accompaniment. Patti could sing…maybe an American Idol if not for age. After the preview variety show in the theatre on the first night at sea, they settled into the main lounge every other night.

They invited us to sing along all night. We did.

They invited us to dance. We did.

They asked for requests. We gave and got.

They talked and joked with us before shows, during, and after.

Here’s a video of Jose & Patti doing 60’s. You can tell they are recorded live in ship lounges.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7UuuU5sNHI

Here’s a video of Jose doing Neil Diamond. Noet they are all live videos and the first scene is on the main stage in a ship’s theatre…

  314. al April 29, 2011 9:36 pm

so i am thinking that if salas, pilares, gets the call tomorrow it would up the ante for recruiting.

having both pilares and salas drafted coupled with hot rod bradley getting a free agent look-see (lock out lift providing) would stamp us as wide receiver u.

  315. Curt April 29, 2011 9:39 pm

Thanks al for the Carole King mix. Even tho I won, I feel “So Far Away.”

  316. Da Punchbowl Kid April 29, 2011 9:39 pm

You’re right al. If Bradley gets in, that probably means we’ll have 3 receivers in the pros for this year. After the 2007 season, we also got 3 receivers in: Bess, RGM, and what’s his name. Don’t know why Jason Rivers didn’t give it a shot. Seems like he had the physical tools more so than the other 3 receivers.

  318. Curt April 29, 2011 9:45 pm

🙂 Funny DPK. Of course Green gets more dineros for his pick.

  319. Curt April 29, 2011 9:47 pm

    SteveM,

I assume you give a thumbs up to Non-Stop Travel. Is that right?

Yes. I have booked a Panama Canal cruise tour with them and my first two Hawaii cruises. Good attention to detail.

Disclaimer: A high school classmate of Al, hawnstln, and myself runs the place. He knows us well enough to throw us out of his office whenever he wants, but he does listen. Another classmate who I did not know coincidentally became my mom’s and cousins agent through independent routes. Small world stuff. Good travel agent.

…but the best agents I ever used and knew were Paul and Didi Ah Yo. So sad on their sudden passing years ago.

  321. al April 29, 2011 9:47 pm

  329. Curt April 29, 2011 9:55 pm

We lost a great group of receivers. But holy moly, we’re reloading with some studs in the wings. Be interesting to see Bright, Sampson, Doe, Pollard, Bell, Gant, Miah, and a bunch of others. Spreading the playing time will be very difficult. You would think that the newcomers will prob have to redshirt.

  330. Curt April 29, 2011 9:59 pm

    gigi,

Are your ears burning? Someone’s talking about you. I’m sure you know the twist. You and al can do a demo at the next function.

  331. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc April 29, 2011 10:01 pm

Back again after three-plus months of doing My Thing – burned out and bummed out – but there’ll be another day. This was my worst year at the Capitol by far. Even bills without any $$$$ attached flopped. Maybe it’s time to move on to my 16th career.

Congrats to the Soft & BaseBows. Went up on campus to see the former, but the carppy weather and the junk seats under cover made it easy to decide to listen to the game on the radio in the car and at home.

Will bring raingear for tomorrow’s DH – that’s something we won’t miss – unless there’s another tsunami on its way.

Question: Does anyone here have any solid information about what Colt Brennan plans to do with the rest of his life? Coach? Run a car dealership? Broadcast sports? Somehow playing football in the equivalent of a minor league team without any indication that something in The Bigs might open up strikes me as simply sad.

Again, circle Sunday, July 3, on your Must Do Calendar. More information to come in about a month.

  332. Curt April 29, 2011 10:04 pm

  333. SteveM April 29, 2011 10:07 pm

    RE: #325

Curt — I can dance as good as Al can sing. 🙄 But I only dance on cruise ships, where only strangers see me, we’re all partying, and we all go our separate ways in a week. Say, why am I trying to get a blog cruise going? 😕 OK, I won’t dance then.

Jose and Patti were the only entertainers where Peaches got up and danced. The first and only time. The place was rockin’ and all the audience of 50 got up. Audience also had a lot of grey and white hair too…and more and more came every night as word spread. 🙂

  334. Curt April 29, 2011 10:10 pm

#331 For Colt to get a chance at the next level, he’ll have to perform on the field. If he does well, there’ll be interest. I think he has two major problems: 1. He’s probably rusty and needs some time to get his mojo back. 2. His competition on the team is the league’s best passer. It’ll definitely be tough. We’re all hoping for the best.

  335. Kekoa April 29, 2011 10:11 pm

Green Bay selected Mississippi State offensive tackle Derek Sherrod in the first round, took underrated Kentucky receiver Randall Cobb at the end of the second, and capped the night by tabbing Hawaii running back Alex Green, a third-down threat, with the penultimate pick of Round 3.”

Draft Day 2: 3 more Warriors drafted, 5 sign free-agent deals

If you’re keeping score at home:

    • Running back Reagan Mauia was picked by the Miami Dolphins in the sixth round of today’s NFL draft.

    • Defensive end Melila Purcell III was picked by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round.

    • Running back Nate Ilaoa was picked by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round.

    • Left tackle Tala Esera agreed to a free-agent deal with the Miami Dolphins.

    • Right tackle Dane Uperesa agreed to a free-agent deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

    • Safety Leonard Peters agreed to a free-agent deal with the New York Jets.

    • Cornerback Kenny Patton agreed to a free-agent deal with the Oakland Raiders.

    • Nose tackle Lawrence Wilson signed a free-agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

    Nice photos, Gigi.

I actually was curious as to what Tom Mui looked like.

Because it was raining, and I had to write my draft stories, I went to the baseball press box yesterday. Great view. No wonder all of the higher-ups always sit there. You really can see the full scope of the plays from there. And you also realize that Colt’s throws to the sidelines are really difficult passes.

I saw some reporters from the other paper in the baseball dugout trying to write their stories. I told them they should to the press box. But, naturally, they don’t trust me, so they stayed put.

    jason,

you crack me up, did you get wet in the rain… we moved up to the blue section, then moved back down to the orange and sat down by the north end zone where the defense were working out…good to see you again!!!

    04/29/07 @ 20:58

    Comment from: Jason [Visitor]

Yeah, gigi made us move to the blue because she didn’t want to melt and all — her words, not mine!

We didn’t get to go up too far — I was concerned about Tom and all those stairs — and the rain stopped pretty quickly anyways. gigi kept on complaining that it was cold, and that she wanted to be on the mauka sideline because it’s more sheltered from the wind and rain.

    04/29/07 @ 21:05

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Actually, I said I wanted to be in the North blue section as somebody at the tailgate told me it was protected from the wind and rain. I am just not an outdoors sort of person. I’ve always preferred to be indoors reading a good book. Too sedentary for my own good.

It is true that most years it can be better to be an undrafted free agent and pick the right team instead of going to a team that might not be as good a fit. However, if the lockout is going to continue, then undrafted free agents won’t get to be signed by teams…so, only draft picks will know what teams they will be with and be able to start learning the system. So, this year I hope that the Warriors on the bubble will be drafted.

I know that Salas will be taken pretty early today, but hopefully Pilares and some other Warriors also get drafted.

The Advertisers pay for the 18-49 demo, which is why I always provided that information when we discussed Hawaii Five-O. The “most popular” shows on TV would be at least in the top 10 on this list you might think.

The number after the slash is the TV share–that is the percentage of people watching TV that are watching that show.
