Feeling the draft

In their circles, there’s optimism that former UH receiver Greg Salas and running back Alex Green might be selected as early as tomorrow, when the NFL conducts the second and third rounds of the draft.

More than 20 teams have remained in constant contact with Salas. And yesterday, the New England Patriots met with Green in his home in Portland.

Former UH safety Spencer Smith is exploring options beyond a playing career.

By not signing with an agent, Smith remains on UH scholarship. He earned a bachelor’s degree last summer, and is taking online classes toward a master’s degree.

He also has been hired as an assistant coach in charge of defensive backs at his alma mater, Kell High in Georgia. Kell opens spring practice May 9.

Smith is in a program in which he is allowed to teach at Kell and draw a coach’s salary as long as he works toward earning a master’s degree in a five-year period.

“This is my primary plan if football doesn’t happen,” Smith said.

As for the approach of spring practice, Smith said, “I’m excited, nervous. It’ll be a good experience. I learned a lot from coach (Rich) Miano on DBs. I’ll probably call him up and ask him for advice.”

With two weeks remaining in the spring semester, the Warriors already have started their offseason conditioning program.

Linebacker Aulola Tonga, who redshirted in 2010, is now the backup buck linebacker to Aaron Brown. Because of his long vertical hair, one of his teammates called him Bu Laia. And, yes, Tonga remembered him.

Give equipment guru Al Ginoza credit. The medicine balls are in team colors.

  6. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 7:41 am

how heavy is the medicine ball? Do you need to take aspirin after lifting it?

  10. koakane April 28, 2011 7:49 am

st is the off season conditioning held in groups or just one time a day?

  11. rage777 April 28, 2011 7:51 am

So you don’t need to play football to use up a scholarship? That doesn’t make any sense to me. As long as a person on scholarship goes to school, the scholarship is still good and UH has to pay for it? If that was the case, I would think there would be a lot of doctorates in colleges.

Isn’t he taking up a scholarship that could be used by another player? A player that doesn’t actually get paid for playing football. It sounds a little selfish to me.

  12. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 7:54 am

    Koakane:

Every group has a different session. When a group is on the field, another might be in the weight room. There also are different slots to accommodate people’s schedules.

  17. d1shima April 28, 2011 7:57 am

  18. d1shima April 28, 2011 7:59 am

Why would it matter if the Blog Host has to take aspirin?

  19. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 7:59 am

    Gigi:

Went to the doc yesterday. He said tests showed I had a vitamin D deficiency, which causes fatigue and memory loss. Lactose intolerant, so I can’t drink more milk. He gave me two options: 1) Take some vitamin D pills. 2) Get some sun, dammit.

And that’s how I stumbled on to yesterday’s workouts.

  20. d1shima April 28, 2011 8:00 am

    😳

    Great Morning All!

  21. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 8:02 am

    ST,

as a stay home grandma, I don’t get much sun. I make up for it by taking CALCIUM PLUS D every morning after breakfast.

    Also good for bone density.

  22. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 8:05 am

    “Bone density”?

I will not go there. This is a family blog. I will not go there.

  23. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 8:06 am

I won’t go there, then, ST. lol.

I scream for more ice cream.

  26. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 8:11 am

Is it such a good thing to be the #1 draft pick?

Doesn’t that mean you are joining the worst team? Wouldn’t a player prefer to be picked by a top team instead?

Better chance of winning the Super Bowl?

  27. koakane April 28, 2011 8:12 am

st no forget sun block protection, no use getting oddah stuff besides vitamin D

  28. rage777 April 28, 2011 8:13 am

OK, I get it now. Thanks for the clarification ST. I thought it was way past his eligibility. I don’t think that is selfish anymore, although he probably should give it up because he has a full time job now. But he has every right to do what he is doing.

Aren’t you in the sun most of the day covering practice?

  29. d1shima April 28, 2011 8:13 am

Or you could be the savior to that franchise. Look at Peyton Manning, Tim Duncan and David Robinson, etc.

  32. A-joe April 28, 2011 8:18 am

    Gmorning gang-

So, I’m reading Dave Reardon’s opening blog post today and it goes about saying he interviewed up and coming sports editor, Clinton Winham, from Moanalua High School who won this year’s award for Best Public School Sports Story of the Year. Clinton won with a story that deftly profiled a particular “Moanalua Math Teacher” who just happens to be a “Super Sports Fan!”

    Hmmmmmmm… =)

Does anyone know where we could obtain a copy of this article to read?

  33. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 8:19 am

Speak of Tim Duncan, I couldn’t believe how the Spurs came from behind to save their okole one more time.

Incredible how they won in OT yesterday.

Great pics, Mr. Tsai. Do there seem to be more players participating on the off season work outs over the last couple of years?

Best of luck to the Warrior draft hopefuls.

  41. NYUH April 28, 2011 9:00 am

Surprised by Ferd’s article. Since when is a NFL payoff the criteria for a successful Warrior career? I wish Salas all the best in a pro football career but if getting a degree, experiencing the team comraderie, enjoying the competition, and being in Hawaii are not sufficient rewards for playing football at UH, by all means, that is something I would like to hear about that.

  42. Pride. April 28, 2011 9:06 am

    Experts scource for info– Wikipedia

    History of the Medicine Ball

Medicine ball training is one of the oldest forms of strength and conditioning training – the first reference to wrestlers training with sand filled bladders appears in Persia nearly 3000 years ago. In ancient Greece the physician Hippocrates had them sewn out of animal skins and stuffed with sand. His patients threw them back and forth for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the words “health” and “medicine” were synonymous. The so-called “Four Horsemen of Fitness” were the dumbbell, the Indian club, the wand, and the medicine ball. This is where the beginnings of the modern medicine ball originate.

  43. NCAA April 28, 2011 9:14 am

The Indian club and the wand? Wot dat?

  44. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 9:15 am

    NYUH,

I think most students attend college to get a job that pays better than one they’d get with just a high school diploma. Few students go to college just for fun. Most are serious about their future.

So, if Warriors manage to be drafted by the NFL, then all the best to them! After all, how many college grads can hope to earn millions after graduating from college?

  45. NCAA April 28, 2011 9:20 am

Don’t most college grads hope to earn millions after graduating? I do.

  46. NCAA April 28, 2011 9:25 am

Good to see the dedication and motivation of the players. Go Warriors!

  47. NCAA April 28, 2011 9:31 am

There’ll always be someone training and working harder.

But there will be fewer of them.

  55. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 10:18 am

    Derek:

Indeed, the next couple of months will determine a lot.

For instance, I think about five receivers were cut. But UH is trying to bring them back for the first day of school, when rosters are expanded. A lot of that depends on how hard they work over the next couple of months, if it is indeed their wish to remain with the program.

  56. BG April 28, 2011 10:22 am

    Good morning folks!

Thanks for the pics NK-Mike. We know you have your own tailgate, but you’re always welcome to stop by the Tsaikos…just be sure where we are, we move up to our “luxurious accommodations” from time to time 😀

  57. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 10:23 am

I think Cam Newton has to be the No. 1 pick. I think if a team has a need for a quarterback, and quarterback is the most valued position, then grab quarterbacks early. For instance, I hear that the Colts are looking for a backup quarterback for Peyton Manning. So the Colts are willing to wait a couple of rounds to pick up a QB. Know what happens when you pick up a QB later? It means you’re picking up a guy who’s going to be a backup, at best. Why fool around? And sure we hear about a Montana or Brady. But those late picks come around every 15 years. So if a QB is on the wish list, grab one early.

  58. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 10:27 am

ST, there are some #1 QB picks who bombed, though. Russell comes to mind…

  61. D April 28, 2011 10:39 am

Medicine ball- in the 19th century the word medicine and health were synonomous. The ball was used for health so basically is was called a health ball.

  62. gigi-hawaii April 28, 2011 10:40 am

    superb pic of BG!

  73. mctruck April 28, 2011 11:13 am

Many analysts on tv are supporting Cam Newton as a #1 pick; I wonder why they’ve not discussed the possibility of injuries seeing how nearly half of Newton’s td’s came via his running with the ball for td’s? If memory serves me well, it was something like (30) td’s thrown and (20) td’s running. I say this because doesn’t the nfl really want the qb to remain in the pocket and throw 1st??

  74. mctruck April 28, 2011 11:17 am

I predict Newton will have a very short nfl career if he thinks he’s going to run around the field and score td’s like he did in college; defenses are just waiting to prove this point.

  75. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 11:24 am

    Newton will be safe.

You’re telling me that glasses is a real disguise? If ST took off his glasses and wore skin tight under armour we wouldn’t notice he really is ST?

  117. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 1:19 pm

    NCAA:

My skin is already skin tight.

  118. Slugger April 28, 2011 1:26 pm

    ST ~

Using sunscreen will prevent you from absorbing vitamin D through your skin.

  119. NCAA April 28, 2011 1:31 pm

    Mr. ST,

That answers my question. A naked ST without glasses is recognizable.

    Enjoy your cod liver oil!

With the No. 1 pick, the Carolina Panthers select ___ ______ .

There were all kind of China government officials at our church this Sunday. Supposedly they were interested in the expansion of Christianity into the nation of China. I hope that is true and not for this bogus report 12 hours ago.

No. Not if the outfit came from DPK’s secret transmorgification collection. Could make you look 6″ taller/shorter and up to 135 lbs lighter/heavier.

  124. NCAA April 28, 2011 1:40 pm

Chinese government is interested in Christianity? The same Chinese government that kills and tortures Christians in their homeland?

I’m very disappointed in the 49ers pick.

Cowboys are up next. I’m done watching why go such a low pick with Aldon Smith?

I hope he’s very good fit for 49ers.

  153. Ralph April 28, 2011 2:51 pm

Redskins up! JMxxxx are you hyperventilating?

At least Cowboys did much better going for OT he will be a ALL Pro very quickly.

  155. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 2:57 pm

Mel Kiper must be getting paid big bucks. 1 wrong and everything is screwed up. Last year he bombed. I don’t think he got very many right with his predictions. To do this on national TV is nuts. He complains about the pick that he got wrong. Like the team is stupid for not taking his pick.

  156. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 3:00 pm

Saw Kiper had Alex Green at #5 for running back and Greg Salas #6 for receivers. Or was it versa vice?

  157. Ralph April 28, 2011 3:00 pm

hey, Jac picked, Skins now pick at 16.

So far the most interesting thing about the royal wedding is that “Crown Imperial” will be performed. Just really like that piece especially when it is performed with an organ! We did it at LCC in the late 70’s. Heck, we did the Overture 1820 with cannon at a park overlooking Pearl Harbor.

  168. wafan April 28, 2011 3:43 pm

Interesting about the OSU coach. Will the NCAA actually punish him and the school or will it just give both a very stern finger wag with the cautionary reminder not to get caught again.

  169. NCAA April 28, 2011 3:45 pm

    I’m going to punish him.

  170. mctruck April 28, 2011 3:49 pm

Eh!?, now espn is flashing Mel Kippers top picks and now showing, (Greg Salas) at #5 top WR’s; also showing (Alex Green) at #6 top RB’s.

  175. mctruck April 28, 2011 4:05 pm

Well, I guess Miami’s need for a Center that they drafted, shows that swapping Satele to the Raiders for their center didn’t workout so well??

If the blog wins, our nominator, Garret, will represent us.

By the way, the women in our office — Liane Yim, Gwyneth Pang, Leslie Kawamoto, Shauna Goya and Sandee Oshiro — voted for the blog. Some voted twice, too. Not sure if the guys in our office were any help.

    Steviem-poo,

Why did you delete my name from the last mainland tsai-ko group listing.

I am extremly upset with you!

In fact, I may have to beat you over your head with my conjoined twin brother Fester!

I will forgive, if you introduce me to that nice fellow you promised last time. [WreckinEyez

In fact, I still have that new can of Right Guard so I’ll smell fresh, and maybe I’ll take a bath even though it’s still only April, not due ’till July.

    A WOMAN’S POEM

Before I lay me down to sleep,

    I pray for a man, who’s not a creep,

One who’s handsome, smart and strong.

One who loves to listen long,

One who thinks before he speaks,

One who’ll call, not wait for weeks.

    I pray he’s gainfully employed,

When I spend his cash, won’t be annoyed.

Pulls out my chair and opens my door,

Massages my back and begs to do more.

Oh! Send me a man who’ll make love to my mind,

Knows what to answer to “how big is my behind?”

I pray that this man will love me to no end,

And always be my very best friend.

    MAN’S POEM

    I pray for a deaf-mute nymphomaniac with huge b**bs

who owns a liquor store and a golf course.

    This doesn’t rhyme and I don’t give a s**t.

Here’s the update from tonight’s Football ʻOhana Festival. First, the tailgate. A bunch of the Tsaikos and SportsHawaii.com guys got together in the parking lot. I was already waiting when I saw these guys setting up; when they started to hang up the black banner, I walked over to join them. We all had a good time talking and eating. We need to do that more often — just need to remember to bring chairs, hehe.

As for the football. I sat with Tom Mui and the gigis. The first third of the 90 minutes was spent in various drills. Quarterbacks threw to receivers, o-linemen were yelled at by Dennis McKnight, small stuff. Then for the second third of the practice, there was one group of linemen working out, while the others worked in a passing skeleton drill. Grice-Mullins looked a bit shaky, dropping a few balls and not really concentrating all that well. Colt shook off some early cobwebs (two Patek picks) to show his usual accuracy. Funaki immediately showed he has a real live arm.

The last third of the practice session was a light scrimmage between offense and defense. The offense under Colt looked sharp, despite heavy blitzing by the defense. Grice-Mullins improved a little to make a few nice catches. Funaki came in with some subs, and showed that while he has a good arm, he still has a way to go with regards to making reads and accurate throws. Kepoʻo showed a live arm as well. Saw a little of “the Castle kid,” as I call Kalauokaʻaea.

My impressions — the offensive skill players look solid, although none of the running backs really stood out (Pilares made a few nice plays that would probably put him a bit ahead). Offensive line looked a little weak, but they faced heavy blitzes on every play of the scrimmage. Not sure how they would perform in a game. Defense did a solid job of minimizing gains and making some nice hits. Overall, it looked okay, but that’s expected; with the turnover, you don’t expect everything to work as well as it did during the 2006 season.

Wow. Maryanne is funny. I wonder how long her beard is. Is she still around SteveM?

  190. Curt April 28, 2011 9:08 pm

Remember the song, “C’mon Marianne” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons? Gigi, have you heard of Frankie Valli?

  191. SteveM April 28, 2011 9:13 pm

Curt — I haven’t seen Maryanne on the blog for a couple years–after Jason left her when she was working as a bouncer on Koreamoku street. Last I heard she was heading to Mongolia to train at sumo stable?

  192. Curt April 28, 2011 9:13 pm

If you like the Four Seasons, you’ve got check out Jersey Boys while in Vegas. We really enjoyed the show. I know some of the other Tsaikos did at the last UNLV game.

  193. Curt April 28, 2011 9:15 pm

Bouncer? Sumo stable? Wow. Datz some wo-man.

  194. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 9:16 pm

I like Wilkerson. He’s a 315-pound beast who can play d-end, d-tackle and nose tackle. Plus, he’s a three-down guy. UH needs one of those. UH needs to play a 3-4 like the rest of the world.

  195. Ralph April 28, 2011 9:21 pm

UH should have kept Glanville and his 3-4.

  196. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2011 9:22 pm

I love the 3-4. It requires big D-ends, and fast LBs. UH has both.

  197. Curt April 28, 2011 9:24 pm

    ST,

Interesting comment about UH needing to play the 3-4. I know running teams have a hard time with our 4-3…well at least most of the time. Are most of the top defenses a 3-4 or 4-3?

  208. Curt April 28, 2011 9:34 pm

    SteveM,

Is Maryanne and KoaMahu related? Their humor is at least.

  209. Curt April 28, 2011 9:38 pm

    al,

Any birdie tweets lately? Seems the big question now is what will Shaquille do?

  210. SteveM April 28, 2011 9:39 pm

Speaking of the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons…

My last cruise on the Norwegian Pearl had this foursome aboard doing shows. Video here…

    http://frankievalliandthe4seasonstribute.com/VideoPromo.htm

    also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L847TPKp1Ok

Their current web site says they also play on the Pearl in Alaska and the Caribbean (between short land gigs).

  211. Curt April 28, 2011 9:43 pm

    al,

Someone mentioned the John Ursua guard on another site. I like the way he handles the ball, always relaxed and under control, does a little misdirection, drives and dishes it off time after time for a basket. He doesn’t look flashy but he looks a smart point guard.

  212. SteveM April 28, 2011 9:44 pm

  216. al April 28, 2011 9:57 pm

the other question is…who is the big guy?

  217. al April 28, 2011 9:57 pm

    ursua is not a candidate.

  218. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 10:06 pm

Ha ha. I just got back from Vegas on Saturday and saw the Jersey Boys on Friday night. What a show. Many of their newer songs, I heard of but didn’t know it was from Frankie Valli and the 4 seasons. Many, many hits. Thanks SteveM. Great show!

  219. Curt April 28, 2011 10:06 pm

We don’t need role players anymore. At this point, he should shoot for the moon.

  220. SteveM April 28, 2011 10:08 pm

I do not think Koa-Mahu and Maryanne are related.

No, haven’t seen Jersey Boys. Limited budget, which I save for cruises. At least there’s a free show every night, besides the lounge acts. I suppose you could say I wait for the “rerun” appearances on the ships as the entertainers leisurely travel the world.

Did you know the Blue Man Group, Second City troupe, Cirque Dreams, etc. are performing on the Norwegian Epic? Garret, Momo and family will sailing on the Norwegian Epic this summer.

  221. Curt April 28, 2011 10:10 pm

Welcome back papajoe2. It’s really hard not to enjoy it. You’re right…great show.

  222. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 10:14 pm

SteveM, are they the real groups on the cruise ships? I saw the Blue Man Group 2wice in Vegas awhile ago. They were very good but I think the Jersey boys were just a little better. I also saw Ka, but with their moving stage, I don’t think they could do it on the ship.

  223. Curt April 28, 2011 10:17 pm

With coaching ties to Australia, Brazil, Europe, Africa, and other planetary systems, you would think that at least one of this year’s recruits might be from overseas. Whatever the case, go go Gib.

  224. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 10:18 pm

If you go to Vegas to see shows, check out Vegas.com for discounted tickets. Jersey Boys cost me $245 including taxes for 2 tix. Also saw Gordy Brown at the Golden McNugget. Good thing I saw him first or I would have been disapointed after the Jersey Boys. He was pretty funny with his impressions and jokes and “only” $34.

  225. SteveM April 28, 2011 10:19 pm

BTW– unlike land gigs, there’s no security force and limos to whisk away the stars after the performances. They usually stay after the show, sign autographs, and sometime sell CD’s and DVD’s. 🙂

I’ve met and sometimes spoke with many performers in the buffet or on the pool deck too.

    How about you papajoe2?

  226. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 10:20 pm

Curt #224, You forgot Senegal. LOL. I tink its on Mars.

  227. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 10:26 pm

SteveM, On all the cruises that I went on (9) I don’t think they had really big time performers, unless they were a pianist, magician or guitarist which I wouldn’t know if they were famous. We once saw a guitarist headlining a show on the ship, that I thought my beachboy friends could play better. But a lot of the entertainment is very good on a cruise ship, especially the ship’s cast. The rest of the entertainment depends on your taste.

  228. SteveM April 28, 2011 10:27 pm

papajoe2 — yes, they are the real Blue Man group. Cruise lines spend a lot on entertainment I hear. I never saw a performance that I thought was second-rate… well, until the lounge show with the passenger karaoke finalists last cruise. 🙄 Darn, so many Tsai-kos could have won that with ease.

  229. papajoe2 April 28, 2011 10:27 pm

I like the wahine dancers on the ship. Once got an email address from a very beautiful one but my wife threw it away.

#230 My wife would not be happy either if I got a beautiful wahine dancer’s email address. Ha-ha. But would your wife let Koa-mahu dance for u?

Curt I searched cheap tickets for any flights originating from Senegal this weekend. nada, so don’t camp out at the international baggage area, go directly to United for flights out of New York. Be patient.

  237. NYUH April 28, 2011 11:06 pm

Gigi, agree with your #44 as every college football should have some aspirations to play for the NFL, CFL or whatever other professional opportunities are out there. But that is not the reality for the majority of UH football players so dissing the whole college experience because a shot at the NFL falls through seems unfortunate distortion of their experience.

  238. NYUH April 28, 2011 11:09 pm

    Interesting plug for Colt

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/683030-2011-nfl-draft-results-who-won-and-who-blew-it-with-first-round-2011-draft-pick/entry/74703-2011-nfl-draft-results-blaine-gabbert-to-jaguars-is-david-garrard-out

How in the world does Jake Locker go ahead of Gabbert? Short answer: Tennessee has an interest in losing big without Jeff Fisher. My prediction: Colt Brennan is signed out of the UFL by the third week of preseason for “veteran” support.

  239. Ralph April 28, 2011 11:09 pm

#230 papajoe2 you should have read the email address carefully, it was for double vasectomy at one low price.

    Ralph,

#237 Okay. I’ll be patient. But did you check for any flights out of the moon called Pandora? The players/avatars there are really big and are blue in color. They’re also really athletic. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gib was bringing one of them in soon.

  246. SteveM April 28, 2011 11:20 pm

I never got the email address of a beautiful wahine dancer on a ship. Get plenty but too young. Well, except for the Chinese acrobat dancers…Peaches pulled me out of the theatre after that show. 🙁

BG really has a good glove, and covers more than his share of the outfiekd. He gets his share of base hits, and has homered as well.

(Besides, he pays me very well to say all these cool things about him!)

    RE: my #211 and papajoe2’s #228

Looking at the web site for the Oh What a Night! group, in 2010 they appeared at such venues such as:

    – Holland Rotterdam (Tahiti-San Diego)

    – Sun Coast Hotel & Casino (Feb 27-28)

    – Holland Rotterdam (San Diego-Guatamala)

    – Norwegian Epic (Inaugural Cruise Southhampton-NYC)

    – Norwegian Star

The extravagant stage productions I have seen (mini-broadway shows, cirque) on the NCL cruises were done by the Jean Ann Ryan Company. They work for many cruise lines and claim:

Jean Ann Ryan Productions is a full service entertainment company specializing in Las Vegas Entertainment, “Cirque” and Award Winning Broadway Shows. We are the World’s most respected and highest rated Cruise Ship Entertainment production company.

anyone hear about Colts release from the Redskins last year was more of a SPITE move by Mike Shanahan towards June Jones??? herd that the whole situation with Ashley Lelie left a sour taste in his mouth and didnt want to have a June Jones guy under his wing??? just somethin i herd through the grapevine. anyone in the Know hear of such a thing, if theres any truth to that??? ……personally i thought Colts release was based on the fact that if things didnt go well for Mcnabb, which it didnt, the fans would be calling for the coach to give Colt a chance and Shanahan wanted to avoid that scenario and i think that scenario would have played out if Colt wasnt released and who knows what could of been?!?!

Most image forensics are done in a way called “copy and paste”, which means part of the image is copied from another part of it. A site named Photoshopped Image Killer can detect such kind of image forgery very well. It identifies the forgery by detecting repetitions in the digital bits that comprise the imageeven if those repetitions are too subtle for the eye to detect or damaged by image compressions like JPEG.
