Wednesday ramblings

• Two former Warriors — linebacker Brashton Satele of the New York Jets and center John Estes of the Jacksonville Jaguars — are training in Arizona while awaiting a permanent resolution to the NFL labor dispute. While camps might or might not be open because of the injunction, the two players have been instructed to stay put.

• Offensive lineman Kainoa LaCount also is working out in Arizona. He was contacted by the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons.

• Offensive lineman Adrian Thomas, who was training in Arizona, had to return to his native Australia to renew his travel visa. Thomas, who was on a student visa while playing for the Warriors, earned a bachelor’s degree in December.

• The volleyball Warriors will suffer a significant loss with the  expected departure of student assistant Robyn Ah Mow, who earns her bachelor’s degree next month. Ah Mow, an Olympic medalist, was a key member of Charlie Wade’s coaching staff, offering keen observations, fiery competitiveness and administrative efficiency. Wade expects Ah Mow to be hired to a college coaching staff.

• After missing 20 school days because of travel in 2010, the football team has been exploring the option of returning to Hawaii between the road games Sept. 10 at Washington and Sept. 17 at UNLV. As Ferd Lewis reported in today’s paper, seats on commercial flights to Vegas are filling up. Instead of mulling — and this has been discussed since November — why not just book as many Vegas seats as possible now. The entire team doesn’t have to travel together. The main thing is that everyone is present for the walk-through practice.

• If I were in charge of a university in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, I would give my head football coach a two-year extension at $1 million per. But the payout would be  stretched over eight years. The coach would get his money and, at $250,000 per year, would have a smaller tax bill. Consider it an IRA plan: After the contract extension expired, he would receive a quarter million a year for the next six years. The per-year savings for the first two years would help get the school through these difficult financial times. And part of the savings could be put into a CD, of which the interest could help pay for the remaining contract. What I wouldn’t do is, say, reduce his salary with the difference to be made up by meeting incentives. If, say, an additional $400,000 or $500,000 could be earned by winning a certain number of games, that money has to be held aside should the team meet those goals. What’s more, it puts the school in the position of rooting against the team to save money. That’s never a good idea.

    Gigi:

I don’t like the idea of incentives or bonuses because those amounts should be built into a budget, but aren’t always. They work in a reverse way: They’re bonuses for the budget if the goals aren’t met.

  8. chopsueyboy April 27, 2011 6:34 am

    good morning Tsai-kos

  9. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 6:37 am

Plus, there’s the assumption that winning generates more money. Not necessarily so. The promise of winning — reflected in season ticket sales — generates money.

  10. CoolEthan April 27, 2011 6:39 am

I agree, the bonus incentive has evolved way out of control.

Heck, they already signed an agreement of employement with pay wages.

Give ’em a nice first place trophy instead with an engraved plaque, with a blue ribbon included.

  11. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 6:48 am

If you’re going to have incentives, they should be revenue based.

If a team earns a certain amount, you get to share in the prosperity.

Of course, it’s always tricky when dealing with the books. Isn’t the writer of “Forrest Gump,” who signed a back-loaded deal, still waiting for that movie to become “profitable”?

  12. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 6:49 am

Well, I tend to think that incentives are just that: incentives to make you work harder and smarter.

  13. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 6:50 am

If incentives are to be revenue based, then the coaches have to agree to a certain percentage — with Mack getting the largest percentage. How do you agree to a percentage, though?

  14. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 6:51 am

From a 1995 NY Times article:

How can a huge hit film like “Forrest Gump,” the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, not yet show a profit? The answer is, well, Hollywood bookkeeping and the strange ways studios spend money.

Paramount Studios, which made “Forrest Gump,” contends that despite having sold more than $660 million in tickets worldwide, the film has not yet earned back all the money the studio spent making and marketing it.

Tom Hanks, the star, has so far got about $31 million for his work on the movie; so has the director, Robert Zemeckis. But Winston Groom, the novelist whose book was the basis for the film, has yet made only $350,000, part of an arrangement that also calls for him to earn 3 percent of the net profits, profits that Paramount says it doesn’t yet have.

Mr. Groom has hired Pierce O’Donnell, the same lawyer who successfully represented the newspaper columnist Art Buchwald in a similar dispute with Paramount over the 1988 Eddie Murphy film, “Coming to America.” Paramount strongly defended itself, saying “Forrest Gump” would ultimately earn sizable profits and pay off the team that made it. The studio has given Mr. Groom an additional $250,000 as an “advance against profits.”

  15. Stretch April 27, 2011 6:56 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Mack should be paid $100,000 per win. Would that be enough incentive him maximize the practice time on the field??

This past season, at 10-4, he would have been paid $1,000,000, which is already his salary. BUT, instead of the automatic 1 month salary bonus for just getting into the Hawaii Bowl, he would have lost out on $100,000 with the lack of preparation.

  16. CoolEthan April 27, 2011 6:56 am

I like how they portrayed Chuck Yeager in the movie The Right Stuff.

When confronted by the top guys in the govt. to help trial fly the experimental rocket planes, they ask Chuck how much he wan’t to get paid for that service.

Chuck replied how the air force already pays him with a monthly check.

He is a true, american hero.

    Done deal.

  17. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 6:57 am

Although I liked Forrest Gump, I considered it a low-budget film — less expensive to make than Star Wars, for example. I’m surprised that the studio has not raked in any profit yet.

  18. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 7:01 am

    Gigi:

I think the movie made a lot of money, but that’s the beauty of book-keeping. And that’s why Rich2176, who audits expenses for studios, works so hard.

  19. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 7:02 am

    Cool analogy, Mr. Cool Ethan.

  20. rage777 April 27, 2011 7:02 am

Who are the Warriors training with? I thought Chad moved back to Hawaii?

  21. rage777 April 27, 2011 7:05 am

    ST,

Your plan wouldn’t work. I can’t imagine how many people would be complaining if you are paying a State employee $250,000/year if they are not actually working for the State anymore. People have short attention spans and they would forget that his salary was spread out over the other years.

  22. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 7:05 am

I think the pay-per-victory idea would be good except: 1) No coach would want to play a challenging schedule, 2) The assumption is UH would reserve $1.4 million in the event of a perfect season, but that wouldn’t necessarily be the case.

  29. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 7:30 am

    rage777:

Not sure how much he charges, but I’ll get you the info when he moves back to town.

  30. Dennis Halloran April 27, 2011 7:35 am

Tough to incentivize college coaches. The NCAA limits the amount of time they can spend with the team. Not quite like the Pros who sleep in their offices a lot

  31. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2011 7:49 am

Dennis McKnight used to live in his office.

  32. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 7:53 am

Dennis McKnight — has he already married that UH coach? Will she be relocating to Canada?

Sun God — has he already married that pretty gal from Texas? Is his previous wife still working at Kapiokani Med Ctr?

I think it is… I can walk further … I don’t get gassed. I still feel some tightness between the 1/3-2/3 mile but then I’m good to go for 2 more miles. I’m currently walking three 20-minute miles per day. Doing carpentry on a friend’s house three hours a day… keeping up with my orders and still got a lot of energy to spare. I’d be happier if I didn’t feel any tightness whatsoever, but this increased stamina, overall sense of good health and lowered blood pressure throughout the day is a good start.

  46. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 10:40 am

MIH, last week when I was admitted to the hospital, I was placed on the cardiac floor because they said I had tachycardia (rapid heartbeat) and had to be monitored.

Electrodes all over my chest and a heart monitor in my shirt pocket.

They kept asking me if I felt “anxious.” I kept saying “no.”

Now that I am home, I feel much better. There’s something about hospitals that makes me feel worse.

It seems that most diabetics can reduce their insulin dependency by 1/2 or more.

Well, I just made out a check to UH Foundation with a memo that it go to the Na Wahine Softball Booster Club. I enclosed it with a cover letter.

If you want to help the club or any other UH cause, here’s the address:

    UH Foundation

    University of Hawaii

    Bachman Hall

    2444 Dole Street

    Honolulu, HI 96822

  77. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 2:35 pm

BTW, your check has to be made out to UH FOUNDATION.

  78. Stretch April 27, 2011 2:39 pm

gigi – you could also have done it online, straight to the softball team.

    https://www.uhfoundation.org/give/giving-gift.aspx?allocation=12569204&site=AKA

  79. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 2:43 pm

If all UH alumni donated at least $50 each to their alma mater, just think how the campus would be transformed.

I hope to see Gartley Hall (the Psychology Dept) rebuilt so professors and students can have classes there again.

I used to work as a student clerk for Dr. Mansson at Gartley back in the late 1960s. What great memories! I had my own office and desk. Perfect for studying for exams between classes.

  80. gigi-hawaii April 27, 2011 2:44 pm

    Stretch,

Doing it online sounds so complex. Besides, I like having a canceled check for tax purposes. Easier to keep track of donations.

Aloha! I haven’t posted in some time but I think that you all would be very interested in this latest post by some 49’er experts. They predict this tommorrow!!!!

    “49er Pick 4th Round”

Greg Salas, WR, Hawaii. Salas has great size and pass-catching ability and would be perfect working out of the slot. He’s in the mold of Packers receivers James Jones and Jordy Nelson – not a burner, but smooth with the ability to pick up yards after the catch.

Hedge: Stanford’s Ryan Whalen is tough and smart, and he knows the offense.

    Read more: http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2011/04/you-might-say-t.html#ixzz1KmHpncGf

  85. Kazz April 27, 2011 3:39 pm

There seems to be some apprehension with donating online for some individuals.

Speaking from personal experience, it is VERY easy and safe to initiate a single donation or to set up monthly donations via online at the URL Stretch just listed (https://www.uhfoundation.org/give/giving-gift.aspx?allocation=12569204&site=AKA).

One time donors will receive a receipt from the UH Foundation to the address you provided during the online process and monthly donors will receive one receipt, usually in January that reflects your monthly donations for the past calendar year.

As far as softball is concerned, people’s online donations fall into the same account as the booster club account with the UH Foundation.

So if someone donates an “X” amount of dollars online to the softball program it would fall into the same account as another person doing what Gigi just did by writing a check payable to “UH Foundation” with “Na Wahine Softball Booster Club” in the memo line.

  86. Kazz April 27, 2011 3:41 pm

Ultimately, to each his/her own. The main thing is the sentiment and it all goes to the program anyway a person chooses to do it.

Like the cliche goes: “it’s the thought that counts”.

  91. SUPPORT RAINBOW WAHINE SOFTBALL April 27, 2011 5:36 pm

    SENIOR NIGHT!!!

RAINBOW WAHINE vs New Mexico State

    Friday, April 29th @ 6:00pm

    Saturday, April 30th – double-header to start @ 4:00pm.

*There will be NO television for this series. If you tune to K-5, you going see hula so das why no mo softball.*

This Saturday night, following the regular season home finale double-header against New Mexico State, the three seniors of the 2011 Rainbow Wahine Softball team will be honored in a way that only the University of Hawaii can pull off.

Melissa Gonzalez, Jenna Rodriguez, and Jasey Jensen will be playing their last home game as a Rainbow Wahine and their careers as student-athletes at the University of Hawaii will be celebrated.

Jasey Jensen, from Layton, Utah, transferred to the University of Hawaii from the University of Utah where she played for two years as a Ute following a transfer from Salt Lake Community College. The 2007 Layton High School Outstanding Athlete of the Year and Mountain West Conference academic all-conference team member helped bring speed and defense to the 2011 Rainbow Wahine team. Jensen has been a valuable asset to the program contributing in the outfield, second base, and designated player positions throughout the 2011 season and her first home run as a Rainbow Wahine, helped the team start off their 2011 Western Athletic Conference season right resulting in a 5-2 over the Utah State Aggies.

Jenna Rodriguez arrived on the University of Hawaii campus a little later than she had hoped for. Before becoming a Rainbow Wahine in 2010, Rodriguez was celebrating a JUCO National Softball Championship as a starting pitcher and infielder for the Yavapai Lady Roughriders at Yavapai College in Arizona. The Acradia, CA native made her mark in the annals of University of Hawaii athletic lore by hitting an epic walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning with two outs to secure the program’s first-ever Women’s College World Series. It will forever be argued as the biggest moment in University of Hawaii history as the 16th seeded Rainbow Wahine upset the #1 seeded Alabama Crimson Tide on their home field. By comparison, in both situational and quality of opponent, no other team in the history of University of Hawaii athletics has accomplished such a feat. To add to the historic moment, Jenna Rodriguez’s walk off home run was nominated for a 2010 ESPY award for “Biggest Upset of the Year”.

Melissa Gonzalez experienced many obstacles throughout her early career as a Rainbow Wahine. Injuries were a pesky part of Gonzalez’s tenure in her first two seasons, but the Moreno Valley, CA native kept her focus and persevered. Gonzalez has worn many “hats” for the Rainbow Wahine seeing playing time in the infield and in the pitching circle, but found her niche at 3rd base and in the batter’s box in 2010. In her first full season as a starter, Gonzalez became only the third Rainbow Wahine ever and first American-born player to be selected as a first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American. The third baseman finished her junior campaign with 25 homerun’s placing her 4th in the nation amongst the top home run hitters in NCAA Division I women’s fastpitch softball. Her overall contributions throughout her career as a Rainbow Wahine comes as no surprise. A 2007 graduate of Valley View in Moreno Valley, Calif, Gonzalez lettered four years in softball, earned all league honors each season and in her senior year, she was team MVP and was named the league’s top pitcher.

I’m beginning to think that the NCAA may actually come down hard on Ohio State when their investigation is over…and Ohio State would look much better to the NCAA if they fired Tressel. Plus, Ohio State would save a ton of money…

Jim Tressel could lose a ton of cash — $3.7 million a year — if he resigns or is fired over his role in the Tattoogate mess at Ohio State University.

Besides the $3.7 million in annual pay, plus other benefits, the contract promises him a job as associate athletics director, at an annual salary of $150,000, when he retires as football coach. It also includes a provision that says Tressel is not entitled to further compensation or benefits if he is fired for cause.

    UH vs UNLV 2011

Okay folks, now that spring is here and I’ve gotten through visiting the tax man, it’s time to start organizing for the game. My hat goes out to SteveM for compiling the preliminary ticket count, which is currently at 77. A few of you have emailed me with ticket requests. I’m not sure what happened to those emails. PLEASE email your ticket requests to SteveM so I can get an idea of how many tickets to get this year.

As in past years, UNLV won’t sell tickets to the general public until season ticket holders get first crack. If I can’t somehow use my charm to get the tickets earlier, I will fly to Vegas the first day of ticket sales and see what kind of block I can get. Regardless, I should know how much the tickets will be prior to flying out there, and I will pass them along to you at cost. (Of course, an extra $1 or $2 to cover my travel costs is always appreciated, but not required.)

Use stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com or any other email addy/means you might know. Also note that your number of tickets requested is understood to be tentative for now. Final confirmation later.

This is the 3rd time Rich2176 is generously doing this, so there is not much uncertainty or mystery involved here. Same with Rasu Begasu’s tailgate buffet and optional bus. Please provide any other info and tentative RSVP requests as listed at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2011.html

I know some people who went straight to Rich the last 2 times did not atttend any Tsai-ko functions–so may be hesitant to contact me. No problem. Getting tickets from Rich does not require you attend Tsai-ko activities, although you are certainly invited. Similarly, just because you already have tickets doesn’t mean you can’t attend the Rasu Begasu activities… 🙂

It’s interesting how many of the ESPN radio guys believe that Tressel’s good works and overall good-guy-ness should merit leniency. But a major violation is a major violation.

If you can’t do the time, don’t cover up the crime.

On this day (April 27) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … count is only 232 comments. The Warrior beat blog is placing very high naionally in a blog contest that Garret entered ST in. Rob25 posts for the first time and ST announced the date and time for the Gordon Biersch Cattle Call.

Excerpt from ST’s blog entry posted on: April 27, 2007 at 8:22:42 am

    * * *

Today’s shout-out is to Garret, who entered this blog in an on-line contest.

I appreciate the response and support.

This is my 26th year at The Advertiser and I’ve covered UH sports since 1987, but until the blog started, most of the people in our building thought I was a mail-room worker. (Which might explain why your Uncle Walter didn’t get his birthday card in 2002.)

At a banquet a few weeks ago, a stranger said he reads this B-Log.

At a recent wedding, a relative said: “I don’t know what a blog is, but — wow — that was a big picture of your head.”

    I guess people are reading.

So, kids, here’s the lesson: Goof off in school, befriend smart people and learn to make fun of those in authority. Then one day you, too, can have your own B-Log.

    ST,

Thank you very much for the mention on your blog. Your blog is deserving of the recognition, so I just had to nominate it. The votes wouldn’t be climbing each day for this nationwide contest if you hadn’t somehow enabled the community here to form.

When Clinton’s name was announced as the winner of the award for the best public school sports story of the year he was so happy and excited that he was shaking.

“I was just so stoked,” said Clinton, who deftly profiled Moanalua math teacher and super sports fan Jason Nagaoka. “Journalism can be thankless sometimes.”

I have realized some new things from your internet site about personal computers. Another thing I’ve always thought is that computers have become something that each family must have for several reasons. They offer convenient ways in which to organize homes, pay bills, shop, study, hear music and in many cases watch shows. An innovative strategy to complete these tasks is with a notebook computer. These pc’s are mobile ones, small, effective and lightweight.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Many countries have a notion of common or conforming mortgage loans that define a perceived acceptable level of threat, which may be formal or perhaps informal, and may be reinforced by regulations, government intervention, or market practice. For example, a standard mortgage may be considered to be one without any more than 70-80% LTV no more than one-third of gross income going to mortgage credit card debt.

Now some idiot English judge has passed an injunction banning Twitter and Facebook from naming names in a privacy case – quite apart from the fact that both are based in America and so completely beyond UK jurisdiction, what about blog comments? The law simply can’t keep up with technology and it looks stupid when it tries.

I believe that avoiding refined foods would be the first step in order to lose weight. They may taste good, but highly processed foods have got very little nutritional value, making you take more in order to have enough vigor to get throughout the day. If you’re constantly feeding on these foods, switching to whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates will assist you to have more power while taking in less. Thanks alot : ) for your blog post.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

My first reaction is: where are your transcripts? What does MIA mean? Your high school should have your transcripts. You have to request them from the high school. Have you done that? I find it hard to believe that, in this day and age, with the importance that society places on transcripts, that yours have simply vanished. And if they actually have, I would contact your high school and see what they can do about it. This is a huge problem for you and your high school will know what a huge problem it is.. . Without them you will have very little chance of getting in anywhere good. A diploma is a worthless piece of paper as far as that is concerned. Recommendations will not be enough. The bottom line is that you will find it very difficult to apply (as you have found out) without transcripts. If you really, truly, can not get your transcripts, then all you can do is call up the admissions office and explain the situation, and plead with them to look at your application anyways. However, you will need a better explanation than ‘my transcripts are MIA’. Everyone’s initial response to that will be ‘I bet they are MIA because they are bad’.

Hey, I am a devoted Crimson Tide fan for thirty years. There are a lot of new drafts picks this football season. I calculate a lot of number crunching for this team because I think that history will usually show us what we will expect this season. As you know it may be hard to know who will stand out. This is the main reason why I like using statistics to help.
