Planning ahead

It will be a short break for the Warriors.

Next week, conditioning/strength coordinator Tommy Heffernan will be distributing the offseason workout book. The book has day-by-day guidelines leading to the start of training camp. It also will list the results of various tests — 10- and 20-yard dashes; bench presses; power cleans, etc. — of all of the players. That will help provide motivation.

The book will allow players to maintain workout schedules even if they choose to go to the Mainland this summer.

Article on Tyler courtesy of Google Translate:

Dresden will start the season in Braunschweig

Dresden’s new quarterback Tyler Graunke will start at the weekend the GFL Abenteuer.Der first opponent. The first classic. This Sunday, the Dresden Monarchs meet in Brunswick for their first league opponent of the German Football League 2011th With the New York Lions waiting the seven-time German champions on the team by Head Coach Gary Spielbuehler. Eintracht Braunschweig in the Stadium (Kickoff: 19 clock) is then the first two points table and the expected good start to the ongoing GFL-year. What else could be from 1 FFC Braunschweig expect? After the mixed record of the past two years, a change of the marketer and the associated name change, it remains to be seen how the lion city dwellers are trying this season to shine in the German Football League. Brunswick is again a top team?

Even if seven German championships speak for themselves for the big cats, the last season was again a disappointment. After four German championships in a row was Brunswick in both 2009 and 2010 very little. Three lean season victories were at the end of the 2009 season to book. Just one more victory could be won in 2010. The playoffs were 2009 for the first time since the GFL-affiliation of the Lions, so for 14 years, unparalleled. 2010 it finally moved narrowly in the final round. As the fourth season of the North Lions finally managed a turnaround. The master was dethroned and still not yet at the end of its tether. to pool the remaining forces, was the new motto. As for the Dresden Monarchs now expected next weekend remains to be seen. Test your game against Hamburg Blue Devils won convincingly with the Lions at least 41:6.

“We know from the strengths of the old Brunswick Lions and, hence, the new New York Lions not underestimate,” says Gary Spielbuehler reported before the first league duel his Monarchs. The former head coach of the Lions know all too well what to expect, even if the new Lions head coach, Seth Womack, another is unknown. “We expect to bear a strong defense and offense, by Dennis Zimmerman, one of Germany’s best quarterback out of his familiar. With power runners like Jabari Johnson and Sean Cooper, in the Brunswick series comes to our defensive line and our linebackers a heavy piece of work. But even through the air, the Lions are more dangerous than ever. Hemaseh Heidary, David DeArmas and the U.S. Import Douglas Fryer will try everything to us strongly einzuheizen “warns Spielbuehler his team. More helpful would have been the last training camp last weekend. Jointly prepared themselves thoroughly for the upcoming tough game. “I’m satisfied with what is seen,” said Spielbuehler. “Our team is ready for the first game and first to a heat victory.”

no need to emphasize the summer-training cycle work out schedule. it represents a period when heffernan takes charge and under ncaa restriction, warrior coaches recede to their cockpits and film room. you can bet , while tommy-the-bombardier takes over the controls of warrior team 2011, its skipper remains in constant contact and is closely monitoring its flight towards camp. last year, tf was was on target and the anticipation this summer is for another successful run. with a number of key players in rehab we need another smooth transition to camp. bring em home tommy!

    Aloha Kakahiaka:

These past several weeks have been something else!! Although we’ve managed to get to most of the BowsBall games, I don’t think that we’ve arrived for the first pitch at the top of the first inning for more than one game. Monday evening, we didn’t get there until the start of the fourth inning!

DrDoc wraps up the tax season today – the filing deadline for state taxes – while I’ve been working on three different Earth Month events – one last Saturday, one tomorrow at UH-Manoa and the other – a CELEBRATE EARTH DAY Community Service Project in Kailua – on Saturday.

Part of the latter includes a HI-5 Drive with all the proceeds going to the Aloha For Japan Fund as well as a non-perishable food drive for the Hawaii Foodbank. We’ll also take cash donations for both Good Causes. Please drop off your donations between 9 am and 11:30 am at the Triangle Park opposite the Mondel Airplane Field on Kapa`a Quarry Road. All donors will receive a free lunch and be eligible for the various door prize drawings. Look for the white pop-up tent.

Meanwhile, the Legislature is heading into the home stretch. Cuts in services & programs along with fee & tax hikes + fund transfers are prominent in the discussions along with some yackety-yack about expanding the economic base – particularly with respect to high tech & tourism. Some social issues are still on the table, but the lack of $$$$ to fund the programs will probably defer most of the proposed actions for another year.

The UH System is taking some hits, but the discussions as to how they will be implemented will not even start until after July 1.

UH-Manoa sports programs – both in terms of operating and capital budgets – will probably stay relatively intact as long as the teams continue their winning ways. Unfortunately, the UH-Hilo programs are not doing as well from a financial POV.

Off to work – will be at Thursday and Saturday’s Bowsball game – Protector has our Friday night tix.

Hint, hint: Block out late Sunday afternoon, July 3rd for a Very Special Event. Much more to come in a few weeks.

  65. BG April 20, 2011 9:58 am

  67. BG April 20, 2011 10:02 am

What I meant was…it’s hard enough with all the supervisory/administrative work of training the team and academic oversight. Don’t need the additional work associated with a bunch of young folks walking back from a game. They are still his/her responsibility until they are back on campus.

  68. BG April 20, 2011 10:03 am

  76. BG April 20, 2011 10:18 am

It’s hump day and I also have time to spend on the blog…life is guuuud!

There have often been comments (from coaches and fans) wanting to have more of a rotation at the receiver positions. I support that idea too. However, it seems that the reality dictates that one group be on the field as much as possible because of the requirements to develop a feel for the game and trust in the group in order to be successful. That said, it is a shame to have outstanding talent sitting on the bench. Are the two perspectives exclusive? It’s one or the other? One way around that might be to do as Boise does with its 2nd teamers and have the 2nd team O practice a select few plays and become super proficient at them. That way they can get in for a handful of plays each game. Anybody else have ideas on this?

  77. BG April 20, 2011 10:20 am

Good morning Kekoa! Good one…what a colorful juxtaposition of a guy in a dress and a picture of a mudhen! lol

  78. gigi-hawaii April 20, 2011 10:27 am

Kekoa, I guess Mudhens is better than Roosters. Can you imagine going further with Roosters and calling the guys the Cocks?

Oops! I am super surprised the blog didn’t put #80 under moderation…

The first opponent. The first classic. On Sunday, you make Dresden monarchs in Brunswick on their first League opponents of the English Football League 2011. Rainbow Wahine RPI drops down to #64 after winning series in Ruston 2-1.

The truth??? It was fully expected to be in the 60’s even if they swept LaTech. LaTech’s RPI is horrible at 173!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Winning the series against BSU or sweeping them works wonders for our WAC standings, but still won’t help our RPI. Boise State is at 120. New Mexico State presents the biggest opportunity this season for both the WAC standings and the RPI itself as they are at #54 and winning the series or sweeping the Lady Aggies is PARAMOUNT.

Honestly speaking, the Rainbow Wahine CANNOT help their RPI at this point considering the RPI of their opponents. The regular season ends at San Jose State and they have an RPI of 185.

Best thing to do is to focus on putting ourselves in a position to win the WAC tournament or at least finish #2 at the worst.

Those voting on the RPI panels tend to favor the SEC and the Big 12. Must be the ESPN influence cause ESPNU features a SEC weekly on all sports SEC.

The SEC has never won a softball championship. The three conferences, Pac 10, SEC and Big 12 features a lot of great teams playing each other, and to rate the SEC so heavily over the Pac 10 is interesting since the PAC 10, namely Arizona and UCLA, owns most of the softball championships.

Wake Forrest has a cool logo, but thought the name was too commercialized for a university.

Felt the name “Demon Deacons” was more suitable for and arena football team or a minor league hockey team. It doesn’t seem natural, it seems “forced”, it seems “contrived” like some pro-teams.

I bet you guys didn’t even miss me, but I missed you.

I was gone from 11:25 – 12:40 to visit my dentist who did a dental implant on the right side of my mouth 5 years ago.

Joyful news: there is an abscess in another tooth. Dentist estimates the tooth will be pulled in 3-4 yrs.

wot? Another implant. Fortunately, he participates with HMSA.

    Name: NEIL FURUYA, DDS

  120. mctruck April 20, 2011 1:16 pm

Bulla, ur#117…..dat wuz my favorite,(wac-it ball). Played almost everyday back in Hawaii in my younger days. My instructor wuz Randy Lau…don’t know if he still plays-o-not??, believe he wuz a former U.S. Champion, real super guy.

  121. mctruck April 20, 2011 1:23 pm

    gigi,

speaking off dentist?!, my dentist wanted me to pay for inplants!!!, just for four teeth, (4-5) thousand dollars!!…just a couple years ago, he discouraged it?!…..I guess he now see’s the profit from it and the economy being how it is???….get my drift?

  122. mctruck April 20, 2011 1:24 pm

    implants….does that look right???

  140. gigi-hawaii April 20, 2011 1:49 pm

nah, NCAA, you don’t know the whole story.

da tooth has already had an abscess and a root canal previously. It is getting loose already. no sense having a 2nd root canal and a new crown — and in the end, extracting it.

  141. NCAA April 20, 2011 1:52 pm

    SteveM,

you sound like a great inventor. Maybe you should patent it.

  149. gigi-hawaii April 20, 2011 2:07 pm

Maybe, I should get a 2nd opinion on that tooth.

You guys have got me worried about the present course of action.

  150. gigi-hawaii April 20, 2011 2:17 pm

OK, I did it. 2nd opinion coming up. Tanks, NCAA.

  151. NCAA April 20, 2011 2:18 pm

Or you can not worry and wait 3-4 years and just yank the sucker out.

So there was no mention of warm salt water rinses or a prescribed or OTC mouth rinse or antibiotic treatments or teeth splints to stabilize the loose tooth.

  152. NCAA April 20, 2011 2:21 pm

I would have tried the black sugar-free fast acting gel. Plus it comes with a lifetime warranty! 😆

Hansen named CU starting QB, Buff D yields 44 points in spring final scrim.

BOULDER – As expected, senior Tyler Hansen has been named starting quarterback for this fall for the University of Colorado, head coach Jon Embree announced Tuesday afternoon.

Hansen, named the team’s Joe Romig Award winner as the top senior-to-be following spring practice, had a passer rating of 188.9 in the three main spring scrimmages. He completed nearly 74 percent of his passes (39 of 53) for 531 yards and five touchdowns – with no interceptions – in those sessions. He had four rushes for 37 yards, as he ran the ball much less than earlier his career, and also avoided taking any sacks.

“Tyler did a great job all spring,” Embree said. “He has command of everything you need to have at quarterback and has also developed into a team leader. This was a goal of his heading into the spring and I’m happy that he was able to attain that goal.”

Hansen, who was 8-for-15 for 124 yards and a touchdown Saturday night, said he just wanted to be efficient and now was “night-and-day” more comfortable with the new pro-style offense than when spring drills started.

Embree’s assessment of Saturday, which saw his defense allow 44 points in the controlled scrimmage: “We moved the ball early well, but stalled out. I wish our kicking game had been a little better. (Justin Castor) was OK, but we need him to be great. We’ve got to improve there.”

“I thought the defense played well early; I was happy with their tackling, but they got a little shoddy at the end . . . That’s OK, I understand that situation.”

That would be the absence of numerous key players whom Embree said would have to work their way back into their positions on the depth chart: “The injured guys are going to have to come back in and compete – no one’s getting a job; you have to earn your job here.”

Looks like Colorado’s O is ahead of their D at this point and as far as the warriors are concerned, who struggled on O and displayed explosiveness on D–that matches them well.

  172. kruzen April 20, 2011 4:06 pm

A radio guy on the sports animals mentioned that Devone Bess was popular with the fans and coaches because of his play and character.

His great work ethic at Hawaii continues in Miami. Hopefully, the current UH players can follow his example.

  173. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2011 4:27 pm

I think UH’s offense will be as good as the offensive line is. OK, that’s stating the obvious, but I don’t worry about the receivers, QB or running backs.

But I do have concerns about 2012: Open at USC. With a new QB, new DTs, new LBs …

  174. d1shima April 20, 2011 4:52 pm

Let’s take it one year at a time

  175. d1shima April 20, 2011 4:53 pm

After all, the nature of the game is that there may be new (insert position) at any point of any season.

  176. d1shima April 20, 2011 4:56 pm

    I think Gruden:

    likes – Locker, Dalton

    no like – Newton, Mallett

(gotta watch the Gabbert one yet)

Fairley – Gruden didn’t know what to do wit dat guy

  177. warriorsun April 20, 2011 5:19 pm

im very concerned about our O–2 returning starters? hello!

the spring scrim gave no indication of a reload, unless i missed 100 plays.

the receivers that stood out arent on the select-4 list and not one warrior qb passed the gold stripe.

in fact moniz took off, where he ended in the hawaii bowl against the golden hurricane, with an int right over the middle.

naturally the 2011 schedule is not foreboding except for COL, WASH and BYU and the top wac tier, and this season 2011, according to many on this cyber-site, is supposed to be a breeze, correct? so much, that they are lamenting about 2012.

Monix tossed 4 ints in the tulsa game and we had 5-overall. Right into the heart of tulsa’s D.

those werent terrible passes, but rather, “gotcha-ints”, except for the flailing duck austin threw.

you can bet, every warrior opponent has that game clip and is on the phone with former hc todd graham or his former dc to borrow the formula or a valued opine.

embree is an nfl type–he thrives on film…..rumor has, jon, along with steve sarkaisian and a coach named bronco, can chew gum and walk at the same time…..and until, we show differently on O, hawaii wont be breathing easy, especially in september.

  178. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2011 5:28 pm

    d1:

    Love that Gruden show.

Straight-up interviews. Doesn’t try to simplify stuff.

  179. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2011 5:31 pm

    Re: Bess.

    How life changed.

Bess wasn’t supposed to be the starter. Grice-Mullins got hurt. And then Jason Ferguson got hurt. If Ferguson were healthy, he would have been a star.

But Bess worked hard. Played his first season with a lower-back strain, but never complained. Day after the season ended, he was back out on the grass field working out. Colt used to call up Davone and some other receivers, and they would toss the ball around.

  180. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2011 5:32 pm

Of course, Rolo was like that, too.

Rolo and Brian Smith were housemates in Kaimuki. They used to practice snaps in the hallway.

  181. jm2375 April 20, 2011 5:43 pm

UH Volleyball – both teams leave tomorrow for LA. Wahine for some spring games and the Warriors to demolish the Anteaters ( 🙄 ) in the MPSF playoffs. UCI’s home court has a capacity of 800 ( ❗ ). There should be a rule against anything smaller than 1000. Charlie Wade said it was “playing in a bad high school gym”. Bet the UH fans will far outnumber the UCI fans.

    GO WARRIORS!!

Yep, for some reason, the Bren Center is booked.

  183. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2011 5:54 pm

Bren Center is named after Donald Bren, a billionaire. In 1998, he married a woman who was 32 years younger. A couple of years ago, his adult children sued him for back child support. Asking price? $132 million. That’s a lot of Happy Meals.

SEATTLE – With the Washington football program’s annual Spring Game a little more than three weeks away, the Husky athletic department is busy making plans for a series of events that will make the event more than just a game.

The annual game is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. in Husky Stadium. While new coach Steve Sarkisian has not determined the game’s format, he does promise to make it “as much of a game as our personnel will allow.” It will be broadcast live on KJR 950 AM and will feature live online coverage on GoHuskies.com.

Hawaii players on the spring roster include:

Player to watch: Nick Montana QB, rsf, 6-3 181….yep, that’s Joe what’s his name, son.

Keith Price QB, 6-1 192, So, was Jake Locker’s backup in 2010. He is a rabbit out of the pocket and odds-on-favorite…..we shall see how young Montana debuts on April 25th.

  208. Curt April 20, 2011 8:34 pm

    jm2375,

Yesterday’s blog #225: I think I heard about the tuition waiver for Benjy Taylor’s son, Tyler McDaniel, from another blogger. I myself do not know if this is correct or not.

  209. Curt April 20, 2011 8:36 pm

You’re right Kekoa; do it first before they do it to you!

  210. Curt April 20, 2011 8:39 pm

At this point, we’re not planning to go to Vegas. We’re still talking about our options.

  211. Curt April 20, 2011 8:48 pm

If al and jm2375 do not believe a tuition waiver applies to a coach’s son, I’ll buy it as I haven’t heard Gib mention anything about it. Tonight on HoopsTalk on ESPN1420, Gib had high praise for Blakes. So at this time, he looks like our point guard.

  212. Curt April 20, 2011 8:54 pm

And Gib mentioned that a foreign player can transfer in later (before the fall semester). Did anyone hear that? I couldn’t tell from the comment if there was such a prospect.

Okay. I’m off to see da wizard. Hasta manana.

    Great Morning All!

You can’t really see the scoreboard or live screen television and you can’t see the people on the field, either. And, so you would have to, I guess, imagine how much alcohol you would need to drink to be able to enjoy those seats.”

Given the contentious nature of the negotiations involved, I imagine neither party would say they are having much fun in trying to determine where the student seating should be for football and basketball. And, so you would have to, I guess, imagine how much alcohol you would need to drink to be able to enjoy those meetings.

In addition, the students are taking up their valuable study time to dicker over the matter which can’t be much fun. And, so you would have to, I guess, imagine how much alcohol you would need to drink to be able to enjoy those makeup study sessions.

I hope that doesn’t affect his graduation chances because going out to find gainful employment after finishing school is no fun. And, so you would have to, I guess, imagine how much alcohol you would need to drink to be able to enjoy those job interviews. 🙄

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Image exif information is useful to for image forensics analysis. But EXIF data won’t tell you too much – the user might have loaded the photo into something like Photoshop just to crop it the way he wanted. Site Photoshopped Image Killer is beyond that, it mines structural information from image content and classifies image as original or altered based on that.
