Finals week

Big week for the Warriors, who have two full spring practices — this afternoon and Wednesday — and the Warrior Bowl Friday to shape the roster. Next Monday’s practice will focus only on special teams.

Tyler Hadden seized the lead in the kicking competition during Hilo’s scrimmage, converting three field goals, including two from 42 yards.

The battle at right tackle, between Levi Legay and Sean Shigematsu, should extend through the summer. UH line coach Gordy Shaw said there are up to 13 linemen who could form a playing rotation.

Linebacker Art Laurel has played well in Corey Paredes’ absence. He should be a contributor this season.

Kamalani Alo has established himself as the quarter, the linebacker-nickelback hybrid. Just in case, John Hardy-Tuliau also can slide back there.

OOOOOO…….. first top ten. LOL Good morning all.

@ al – if i not mistaken Mcbride is in the elephant mix. where he is the DE in the 4-3 or Rush LB in the 3-4.

The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

Al may be having trouble with the “modern football” teminology….isn’t McBride a candidate for “Elephant”?

  8. NCAA April 11, 2011 10:02 am

    McBride is the elephant man.

    I may skip lunch….

  10. Stephen Tsai April 11, 2011 10:03 am

    d1 is correct.

Quarter is the nickelback that plays as a linebacker-safety.

Elephant is the linebacker who plays as a rush end/linebacker.

  11. d1shima April 11, 2011 10:03 am

Looks like JHT didn’t miss by much?

    that’s right the elephant.

okay, one cup of coffee then i go.

  16. Stephen Tsai April 11, 2011 10:06 am

By the way, HiloBilly’s first shot (on the left) is of Kana Silva.

  17. al April 11, 2011 10:06 am

quarter should be renamed. since the position is technically defensive back, he could be called a quarterback.

  18. Stephen Tsai April 11, 2011 10:07 am

In all those reports, I failed to mention it was an offense vs. defense format.

  22. d1shima April 11, 2011 10:13 am

I recall watching a video piece on BY-Who back in the day when Lavell Edwards was kicking out his string of bally-hooed QB’s (Nielsen, Wilson, Young, McMahon, etc.) and part of the story was the QB’s reviewing every pass they made in practice immediately after the play with a coach who’d take notes on a clipboard.

I know that Mouse Davis pays the kind of attention to detail that goes down to inches of alignment with the receivers; is that true throughout the staff?

  23. NCAA April 11, 2011 10:14 am

Are there other formats besides offense vs. defense?

  40. warriorsun April 11, 2011 11:57 am

too bad darius didnt fit at slot from our coaches view. slot requires certain assests as does wideout. not everyone can do both. certainly underscores the talents of greg salas. he will be missed and his versatility wont go unnoticed at the next level. are we sure gant wont fit at slot? he has quick feet and can cut on a dime.

good to see so many promising underclass offensive linemen stacked in shaw’s cupboard.

a true measure of reloading is quality and youth in the mix for pt with seniors.

  41. A-House April 11, 2011 12:01 pm

    Slugger:

correct, amundo – that is a rock cod!

  42. al April 11, 2011 12:08 pm

the slotback position requires a lot of reading of the coverages. it takes time to develope that innate sense to choose the right route in the heat of battle when one has but a second or two to decipher what the defense is giving you. thus, it is easier to learn the wideout positions and then if your abilities are such that allows you to move inside later.

bought the,(usa today/special edition nfl draft preview), and they got Greg Salas/Alex Green, going it the 5th round.

I hope they go higher than those projections; likewise for Pilares and other former UH players.

  47. mctruck April 11, 2011 12:47 pm

The article says about Salas; “Salas can drag defenders for a few extra yards. He doesn’t have a quick first step off the line, but he has the size(6’1, 210) to force his way through defenders.”

About, Alex Green; “Green(6-0, 224) is big enough to impress scouts. He doesn’t have the vision of the better pro running backs but has good hands and could have more versitality than a typical late-round running back pick.”

Again these quotes from the USA Today, special edition/NFL DRAFT PREVIEW.

Sorry nothing said bout, Pilares, except what we’ve read about his meetings with several pro teams.

  48. mctruck April 11, 2011 12:53 pm

Forgot….Salas ranked at, #20 among wr’s……Alex Green ranked at, #16 among rb’s…and Kealoha Pilares ranked at, #41 among wr’s, with that said bout Pilares, didn’t like the Dolphins want to talk to him about possible slot/rb positions??

  59. bigislandkurt April 11, 2011 1:56 pm

Dustin Elisara — Here’s my take: The bradduh is as advertised — 270lbs or in that range for sure. He’s a big boy. However, I must admit, that bradduh got some wheels. In watching him at practice, one can certainly imagine what it would be like to have him at 245 or lighter. But I can’t deny what I saw — this bradduh can move at 270. He says that even though he is still with the LB’s, there is a chance for he to get on the Dline. Can we say “deceptive speed???”

Anyone know what time the Warrior Bowl is scheduled on Friday?

  65. Stephen Tsai April 11, 2011 2:51 pm

Warrior Bowl is at 7 p.m.

Best place to watch? From the parking structure.

  66. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2011 2:52 pm

BIK – I thought Elisara coming out of Kapolei was going to be a big time LB for us or even as a big back. He does have speed cause I think he was a 4.5-4.7 guy coming out of high school. I know he can pound guys and has pretty good instincts at the LB position. I’d rather him lose couple pounds and get down to about the 250 range and stay at LB. Unless he’s one of those high motor type rush ends, then let em loose…

  67. jm2375 April 11, 2011 2:57 pm

    Derek,

    #2 is Allen Sampson.

  69. ai-eee-soos April 11, 2011 3:44 pm

    re #59 and #66.

I asked ST about Dustin Elisara, a few days ago, and was told he was 270, and moved to DL.

Yeah, I agree – if he could lose some weight, I would like to see him stay at MLB, as we are

very short-handed there. He would be a force there.

  70. bigislandkurt April 11, 2011 4:25 pm

I think it would be nice to keep Elisara at LB or move him to RB. But what da h*ll do we know? We’re just fans! 🙂

Desmond Dean is another one worth talking about. That kid is tall and lean and yes, everybody knows that unlike Elisara, he needs to gain some weight. He still plays strong and was in on many plays. I think he will be a good one eventually.

Another name of mention: Joe Avery. I think all of us have been waiting for he to move to the front. His size and range certainly had a lot of us thinking Ashlie Lelie Redux. But this has not been the case. From what I noticed at this Saturday’s practice, it appears both Bright and Doe have moved ahead of Avery. I don’t know what’s up with him, but the thoughts us fans have had for him have just not materialized.

    BIK

  83. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2011 7:08 pm

Joe Avery is a Senior too right? He has the height indeed but he’s still somewhat raw in a way. I member when his hands was like rocks and couldn’t catch for beans. Well over the years he has worked on it with the jugs machine and has showed a flash or two during games but not enough. I think Coach Rolo could have him rotate in and create mismatches but to me Avery is not a natural receiver… From what I’ve seen over the years is that his route running is suspect and his hands although better is not glue like yet. I not tryna knock Joe but just stating facts. Too bad he caught on to football a little late but by now he should’ve improved enough to get on the field, just saying…

  84. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2011 7:16 pm

I think Elisara could make a decent big back… he did play some running back in high school and I’m sure he wouldn’t mind truck stickin a few guys. I’m hoping Joey Iosefa can be that big back type. Used to love watching West Keli’ikipi when he played. A huge guy 6’1″ 266lbs. that could move and truck guys with ease…been missing that. To this day he still has one of the best stiff arms ever when he kept his pimp hand strong running over that USC guy. Same with bruddah Nate Ilaoa, deceptive speed and hard to bring down… like one Ferrari in a Humvee body.

  85. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2011 7:22 pm

Can’t wait for the incoming recruiting class though, cause I’m sure there are gonna be some mixing and matching on offense and defense once they arrive. Got some big time offensive and defensive guys who could unseat some guys who been around awhile too. I like it though cause it’ll make the whole team better when you have to compete at the highest level day in and day out. Anybody half-steppin or slacking garrans going ride bench with all the talent we got.

  86. al April 11, 2011 8:24 pm

pauoa boy…i think you will enjoy watching joey iosefa in the years to come.

  88. Curt April 11, 2011 8:43 pm

Do you remember back in the day when we were in a recruiting war with John Wooden and UCLA for Richard Washington? Close but no cigars.

  89. Kekoa April 11, 2011 8:49 pm

Right you are PB. I saw evidence of players that are working hard at winning a spot at their individual positions. At the very least they are doing all that is asked of them.

Watching the plays as they unfolded, i was impressed by the crisp route running. At the same time it was good to see the corners hangin’ tight on the receivers. Catches made were earned.

The interceptions were encouraging to see. It means that any passing team will have to work hard to prevent grand theft.

Big Island fans came despite the threat of more rain, and to show their support. Talking to the fans around me revealed that they are most appreciative of the Warriors coming to Hilo. It allowed them to evaluate for themselves. Judging from the applause from the stands after outstanding plays, they really liked what they saw.

  90. al April 11, 2011 8:57 pm

curt…don’t be surprised if come wednesday we get no letters. here’s why, we now have around 8 recruits very interested in the hawaii program.

on paper we only have three scholies unless somethings unforseen transpire.

it is a good problem. we all know that a pg from texas emerged on the horizon less than a week ago. who’s talent was so intriguing that the gibber just had to check him out.

al: I remember Richard Washington’s mom definitely having an opinion…just can’t remember if it was for UH or UCLA. Hard to believe that UH and probably Bruce O’Neill was after elite national players like Richard Washington and Moses Malone. But we did land some big-time stars in Tom Henderson and Reggie Carter. Hopefully, Coach Gib will be just as successful.

two others made early verbal commits, dillon biggs and michael harvey. however, mixed signals abound on the third recruit as well no confirmation regarding biggs and harvey. neither of the latter two are point guards a position we need to secure.

earlier word was that a jc pg committed. the gibber said that as many 7 guys have expressed an interest in our program. the gibber also said that everyone is returning and yet the end of season evaluations have not started.

so who knows? it is said that visits have yet to be made.

we may have one or two signed loi’s on wednesday, but, at least one or two more may sign later on.

and yes gibber has the written contract in hand and just needs to approve and sign it.

  98. Derek April 11, 2011 10:24 pm

Actually, we only have one recruit more to offer a scholarship. We have five scholarships available to replace Kurtz, Thompson, Amis, and Salter and Coleman who left during the season. Recruits who have already signed in the early signing period are Blakes and Stevens.

SFs Michael Harvey and Dillon Biggs also verbally committed about a month ago. Now, if one of the existing players leave who is on scholarship then maybe we have one more we can sign, which would make 2. My understanding is that Arnold can have 13 scholarship players so let’s count em.

    1. Zane Johnson-SG

    2. Vander Joaquim-C

    3. Trevor Wiseman-SF

    4. Josten Thomas-PF

    5. Bobby Miles-PG

    6. Bo Barnes-SG

    7. David Rozitis-C

    8. Gerry Blakes-PG

    9. Ronnie Stevens-PF

    10. Dominic Brumfield-SF

    11. Michael Harvey-SF

    12. Dillon Biggs-SF

    13. Pii Minns – walk-on-SG

    14. Jace Tavita – walk-on?-PG or SG

    15. Open Scholarship

    16. Miah Ostrowski – on football scholarship-PG

I don’t know how Arnold is going to decide who going to get the final spot, but it has to be a point guard. Who is that is a very good question? It could be this PG from Texas, it could be Pierre Jackson out of Southern Idaho, or maybe Andrej Pajovic out of high school. Who knows!!!!! Either way, it looks like it’s a very full roster and there is a lot of competition for valuable playing time. Players have to improve their games in the offseason in different areas such as ball handing, 3 pt shooting, post moves, free throw shooting, etc. This is also the possibility that one or more players will not return to the team next season, but at this point, everybody is coming back the last time I checked. Like anything else, things can change quickly. It should be a very interesting next season. I’m thinking about getting seasons tickets for this coming year.

pierre jackson committed to baylor today.

  102. al April 11, 2011 10:31 pm

in the end, i think we’ll end up with six new guys. the last two guys will be at least one solid point guard and either another ooint guard or combo guard. worst case scenario, one pg and one best athlete out there.

    that is just my belief.

this year’s recruits are critical since only zane johnson graduates next year.

  103. jm2375 April 11, 2011 10:32 pm

anyone going to the mvb banquet on Sunday?

  104. Curt April 11, 2011 10:32 pm

al, you must be referring to the former Iowa State commit. We definitely need help at pg. And okay, I’ll be patient even if we don’t receive any LOIs on Wednesday…just need to chill. I hope Coach Dana can spring some surprises too.

  105. Curt April 11, 2011 10:42 pm

Thanks guys for your views on Saturday’s scrimmage. Defense looks real solid. Hopefully, the offense will be able to come out swinging from game one.

  107. al April 11, 2011 11:06 pm

wbb…definitely needs point guards, a shooter or two, and another big.

they already have three players inked for next year.

kalei adolfo, 6’1″ f from molokai who will play both bb and vb.

jasmine ray, 5’6″ point g, who earned 14 letters including football as a wr/cb/pk

malia cravens, 5’10” sf, sister of siaki cravens.

i believe dtd has one or two more scholies available.

  108. Curt April 11, 2011 11:26 pm

Beautiful in Texas this morning! We are five hours ahead! 54 this morning, and expect a high of 80 for the day. The other day we had a big storm pass through with mothball-sized hail that caused a lot of broken windows, and damaged windshields and car finishes, and broken limbs of trees. Lots of wind, rain, LIGHTNING and THUNDER!!!

    Have a good day, y’all!!!

  155. Christian Louboutin shoes April 12, 2011 9:26 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  312. woblery April 18, 2011 5:02 am

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

There’s established evidence now we need the sun, we shouldn’t be hiding from it.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
