The waiting game

Mistakes?

Now is the time to make a few, according to UH offensive line coach Gordy Shaw.

“I don’t care if the defense blitzes every times (in spring drills),” Shaw said. “We might not block a soul. The next practice, when they do the same things, if we pick it up, good. We’ve learned something from our mistakes. You can’t always have success and think you’re ready to go. Through failure, you get better.”

Especially during spring training, Shaw said, referring to it as the “developmental” period. The Warriors are seeking to replace five o-linemen who started in the 2010 Hawaii Bowl. While a No. 1 o-line has been established (LT Clayton Laurel, LG/C Brett Leonard, C/LG Matagisila Lefiti, RG Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, RT Levi Legi), freshman tackles Sean Shigematsu and Jordan Loeffler, and guard David Lefotu are pushing for playing time.

“Physically, there’s a pretty good upside to those young players on the second unit,” Shaw said, cautioning, “it’s not like a 100-yard dash. It’s a matter of experience.”

Shaw said the nuances of playing on the offensive line cannot be learned overnight, equating the situation to someone trying to cram for a final. While the younger players have done well against base schemes, the first-unit blockers have more experience in facing stunts and blitzes.

“Everybody in the stands thinks you’re supposed to always block the guy in front of you,” Shaw said. “It’s not that way all of the time. Sometimes it might be the guy playing to the inside of you. … You don’t want to be the new puppy in the house that bites the ankle of everybody who shows up in front of you. We want our guys to play with patience and confidence. That comes with experience.”

Shaw said he wants to give each of the units ample practice time.

“We want to give everyone a chance in different situations,” Shaw said.

Interesting article about why Montana decided to not go to the WAC. Increasing their Athletic Budget by $6.8 mil per year and needing up to $30.6 mil in facility upgrades is a huge price to pay. Montana isn’t even compliant with Title IX right now with 22 less football scholarships at the D-IAA level.

Much of the increase would’ve been in the operating costs of the sports, including additional scholarships not only for football – which would’ve gone from 63 scholarships to the Bowl Subdivision limit of 85 – but also for women’s sports added to help UM keep in compliance with Title IX.

Add that to the previous improvements and the price tag is $30.6 million.

Montana’s study happened after BSU/Nevada/Fresno left the WAC but before UH announced they were going to the MWC/BW.

Hawaii averaged 40,416 fans; Montana, 23,713. Next is Louisiana Tech at 18,861. The study excluded Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State, all of which announced plans to leave the WAC during the summer of 2010.

I agree with Coach Shaw–hopefully the OL will see a lot of different looks and blitzes and make their mistakes now and learn from them…we need Moniz upright all season.

Long Beach State’s students voted against having their school play football again.

The student referendum “Bring Back 49er Football” failed with a paper-thin margin of only 3 percent. Fifty-two percent of students voted ‘no,’ while 48 percent voted ‘yes.’

The number of options for the WAC seems to be decreasing. When considering the reduction in TV money and travel subsidies that UH will be paying when it joins the MWC/BW…the alternative of staying in the WAC was *not* a good one.

  11. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 10:39 am

    Garret,

would you say that the teams that will replace the departing teams will improve the WAC? Or will they downgrade the WAC even more?

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid March 26, 2011 10:40 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Great philosophy by Coach Shaw. Let ’em learn.

Top Twenny, Travllin’ Tsing Tao Tom! 😉

  13. Michigan Warrior March 26, 2011 10:42 am

We need that cohesion to develop quickly!

Between the end of Spring ball and the start of summer, does our O- and D-Lines go at each other for practice/experience’s sake? We always hear of the qb’s and receivers practicing on their own time. Or are they prohibited from squaring off in the off-season due to possible injury? Man, I hate being so far away AND clueless!

  14. Garret March 26, 2011 10:47 am

    gigi,

Which teams will the WAC be adding? The options being talked about like Lamar will *not* upgrade the WAC and will not interest ESPN. The biggest thing the WAC needs are good football teams, but the WAC’s top 4 football schools are leaving for the MWC and nobody the WAC could add (with Montana out of consideration) would upgrade the WAC from its 7 members (counting the 2 Texas D-IAA schools).

  15. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 10:49 am

    Garret,

with that in mind then, do you see the demise of the WAC in the near future?

  16. Stephen Tsai March 26, 2011 10:49 am

They’ve run out of teams in the West, unless Portland State and Sacramento State want to upgrade.

  17. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 10:53 am

I thought Portland State switched to D-1A status already. No?

  18. Garret March 26, 2011 10:54 am

Sacramento State doesn’t have the money and they are looking at a *huge* budget cut again this year.

Portland State doesn’t have the money the last time I checked into their situation.

In other words, there are no options in the West for the WAC.

The bad thing is that the $2 bil in budget cuts for the state of Texas will close a few public Universities in Texas and shrink the budget for every other public University…so, the pool of schools in Texas will decrease also.

  19. d1shima March 26, 2011 10:55 am

    Congratulations Rasu Begasu!

  20. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 10:56 am

And Rasu said he “never wins.”

  21. Stephen Tsai March 26, 2011 10:57 am

I guess we’re all out of money.

I would say we should just print more money, but I guess that’s not how it works.

Darn. Shouldn’t have cut so many of Mr. Mak’s econ classes.

  22. Stephen Tsai March 26, 2011 10:57 am

I think “never wins” is relative to where he lives.

  23. Garret March 26, 2011 10:58 am

    gigi,

The WAC can continue as a basketball conference. So, the WAC won’t go away.

The WAC will end as a football conference if the MWC decides to expand. The MWC’s commissioner has talked about how they want to be the only non-AQ conference in the West, as that would give them better leverage with TV and fan attention. If the MWC added Utah State and SJSU (assuming that those schools win the WAC after UH leaves), then the WAC would stop playing football and there would be only 1 non-AQ option for ESPN/Comcast/Fox to bid on when the contract is up in 2015-2016.

My guess is that there will be another conference shuffle in 2015. MWC invitations could go out to whatever school or schools are dominant in the WAC. That could help get/keep AQ status for the MWC and would be perfectly timed for the MWC to get a much bigger TV contract starting in 2016.

  24. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 11:00 am

    Garret,

That’s too bad for Benson, then. I can just see his salary shrinking as a result.

  25. d1shima March 26, 2011 11:01 am

If only “they” did still actually print the money now….

What was the headline this morning? $0.11 increase in gas price in the last week?

  26. d1shima March 26, 2011 11:02 am

“Modern day football” sure is interesting…

  27. Garret March 26, 2011 11:02 am

Note that the Big 12’s TV contract ends in 2015-2016 also, so they will probably invite 2 schools to start with them in 2016. That will have a domino effect through the MWC, C-USA, and WAC.

Right now if the Big 12 added teams they would get no extra TV money. So, the conference title game is worth $0 right now. But the conference title game could be worth $20 mil if they added 2 teams in time for 2016. That is why the Big 12 didn’t expand now and why they WILL give invitations to 2 schools in 2015.

Note that the Big 12 was getting the same amount of TV money as the SEC for years, but the Big 12 signed a TV contract with ABC/ESPN before the money started going crazy…but that ABC/ESPN contract is up in 2015-2016 and they will cash in then.

  30. Garret March 26, 2011 11:08 am

    gigi,

Karl Benson has made millions from the WAC over his years as commissioner, with an expense account that let him rack up zillions of frequent flier miles and hotel points. Despite all the teams that have left the conference, his salary has been going up instead of down over these 17 years if the media reports I’ve read are correct.

UH has been paying 1/9 of his salary for 17 years…since they money spent on his salary reduces the conference distribution.

  31. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 11:10 am

    Leaf: $33K minus $12K (tax credits) = $21K.

Trouble is we don’t have enough income. Hubby wants to know if we can spread the tax credit over several years.

  37. Garret March 26, 2011 11:17 am

I like the Chevy Volt more than the Nissan Leaf–all-electric driving for about 40 miles and then a gas engine in case we are on a road trip that is beyond the range of the battery.

But the plug-in Prius and other options are also supposed to be coming later this year and that will provide some other options to consider.

I like 99club’s suggestion of the Hyundai Elantra–good gas mileage and very reasonable price.

You are not really going to be helping the environment with an electric car if you drive so little–not much gas used there. With electric car supplies low, it would be better to let someone else buy the car that will drive it more.

There is a huge premium right now for electric or plug-in systems for cars. That premium may decreased to a decent level in 2 years. A Prius or similar car would be zero-emission and use minimal gas. I am getting about 47 mpg with my Honda Insight right now because 90% of my driving is on the freeway. The Honda engine does better on the freeway and the Toyota engine does better on surface streets.

  38. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 11:22 am

Chevy Volt — it has a gas generator that creates more electricity so there is still no emission. More expensive than the Leaf — $41K.

I just don’t like our dependence on foreign oil, not to mention polluting the environment. We all should do our best to stop this.

  39. Garret March 26, 2011 11:22 am

yes, but with football gone (in the future, we imagine), why wouldn’t his salary and perks decrease? I don’t get it.

    gigi,

Why wouldn’t Karl Benson’s salary be lower than when the WAC had BYU, Utah, and the rest of the teams that left for the MWC?

Why wouldn’t Karl Benson be making less money now than what he made when SMU, TCU, UTEP and others were still in the WAC?

Why wouldn’t Karl Benson’s salary decrease after Boise State got the MWC invitation and he said that leaving the WAC was a “reward” for their football success?

If he makes more money now despite losing BYU, TCU, Utah, Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico, UTEP, SMU, and so many others schools, why should we think that the WAC Presidents will decrease his salary?

It should be pointed out that even electric vehicles will result in pollution because generating electricity damages the environment unless you have a solar power system at your home. Coal-based systems generate pollution that can harm people, petroleum-based electric system generate pollution, etc. Natural gas is cleaner, but I don’t think Hawaii uses much of that for electricity. Nuclear-generated power may not have emissions, but the tragedy in Japan shows the dangers there.

  122. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 12:50 pm

har. hubby said he thinks he has dengue fever. gotta take a blood test to know for sure.

besides, we don’t live in Pearl City.

  123. al March 26, 2011 12:50 pm

rasu…aflac will be paying through their nose to those japanese under policy. it is said that one out of four working folks in japan own an aflac policy.

  124. al March 26, 2011 12:51 pm

    better dengue then mono.

  125. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 12:51 pm

    al,

    okay, i didn’t know that.

  126. al March 26, 2011 12:52 pm

#113…oh now i know the rest of the story.

rasu is that why he is so up and down?

  127. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 12:53 pm

my grandson lives in Pearl City (townhouse).

    he has mosquito bites.

briefly had a fever — due to teething, we thought.

    does he have dengue???

  128. d1shima March 26, 2011 12:53 pm

Billy Donovan needed a TO for THAT play?

  129. βρεω808 March 26, 2011 12:54 pm

  131. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 12:55 pm

Butler? ah ha! should I ruin it for hubby? he’s watching the DVR.

  132. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 12:58 pm

nah! he said, “tell the warrior beat to stop it.”

  133. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 1:05 pm

    WDoc,

I am sort of in the same boat as you: If hubby dies before I do and we have used up our savings, I will be in deep kimchee.

My only alternative — and perhaps yours, too — would be to rent out the extra rooms to boarders…

  134. d1shima March 26, 2011 1:06 pm

dengue outbreak is below the freeway in PC; where the spring water flows.

The health dept. says those mosquitoes only fly in a 100-yd. radius so the town homes up the hill should be safe.

  135. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 1:07 pm

…unless, of course, he dies before age 65 and he still has life insurance. Then, I’ll have more than enough to live on.

  136. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 1:08 pm

    d1,

    hope you’re right!

  137. d1shima March 26, 2011 1:09 pm

Talk about winning in Rasu’s town.

I wonder if you coulda get odds last April on Butler getting back to the Final Four before Duke?

  138. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 1:10 pm

that was a shock when Duke lost.

  139. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 1:13 pm

“Florida got the lead!” hubby shouts.

    haha. if he only knew…

  140. wafan March 26, 2011 1:45 pm

  144. Hawaii#24 March 26, 2011 1:48 pm

    Slugger, et al,

I am back on the radar.

Robin and I did some fundraising for a non-profit. It was a much better experience then.

  145. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 2:21 pm

    nooners!

Off topic… to all the dieters…

Alcohol contains about 7 calories per gram, so more alcohol means more calories. Alcohol has almost as many calories as fat (9 calories per gram) and almost double the caloric content of carbohydrates or protein (about 4 calories per gram). The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend reducing alcohol consumption if you’re trying to reduce your calorie intake.

Two beers is the same as a double hamburger, two slices of pizza, or a typical roast beef sandwich. Regular beer has between 150-200 calories.. lite beer anywhere from 100-130 calories. Not a whole lot of difference.

  146. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 2:29 pm

    MIH,

hmmm. I just drank a Tsingtao to honor Tom’s photos of the brewery.

How many calories? The bottle does not say.

The Chinese don’t care about calories? lol.

Anyway, I just 1-2 beers a week, and then pau.

  147. Slugger March 26, 2011 2:29 pm

    Hawaii#24,

Thot that was you. Malasadas from Agnes’ would be heaven, but I’m trying to lose weight. Got to spend a little time with Robin. She says Hi!

Happy birthday to WarriorMojo, Ian and Kyeton!

    Celebrate, celebrate,

    dance to the music…

Better put on my black ninja clothes before heading to the garden. Gotta hide from the ‘squeeters.

  148. Slugger March 26, 2011 2:32 pm

Congratulations to da little-black-ninja-feet Rasu Begasu! See you next month.

    K, latahs…

  149. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 2:32 pm

    MIH,

BTW, there was a recent article regarding the value of being obese when you are in your 70s, 80s and 90s.

French study of the elderly patients in a French hospital. The ones who died first were the thin patients.

Followed by the moderately sized patients.

The patients who survived and went home were all OBESE.

    So, there!

  150. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 2:38 pm

    gigi..

They probably don’t feed them enough in the French Hospitals… so the skinny ones died of malnutrition. 😉

  151. warriorsun March 26, 2011 2:39 pm

rolo can make it easier on coach shaw’s hogs if he inserts counter-running plays to the perimeter by some of our speedy receivers. it keeps def ends and outside blitzes honest and checks any attempt to zero-in on our QB from the edge. this is employed by many offensive systems across the college landscape utilizing a 4-spread O. troy n oregon are a couple of great examples. if we have the assests–use it!

  152. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 2:41 pm

    MIH,

real question: how in the world did the obese make it to their 70s, 80s or 90s in the first place?

    In 5 yrs, I’ll be 70.

hmmm. Should I stop trying to lose weight? lol

  153. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 2:44 pm

To be honest, the only true reason why I want to lose weight is to LOOK BETTER.

So far, my lab scores are normal. will know again next month when I report to the lab again.

  154. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 2:45 pm

what happened to these mega-star athletes — Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley — both obese.

  155. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 2:55 pm

    gigi…

Being overweight isn’t always the cause of bad health… it really is a matter of how much your own metabolism can handle. The bigger the body, the more mass that can be affected by free radical damage… when free radical damage in a specific area exceeds what your immune system can handle, then you start to have problems.

World class athletes do not necessarily live longer. They die of heart attacks like everyone else. Often, though, they don’t have the typical angina type warning signals. Unless one takes a nuclear stress test or something very similar, one may never know if one has heart disease. Athletes that endure a lot of stress often have badly scarred hearts at the end of their career. You can have 70% blockage and not know it.

  156. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 3:01 pm

    MIH,

you mean you can have 70% blockage — and a cholesterol test won’t reveal you have problems???

  157. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 3:01 pm

Okay.. I’m off for my afternoon walk… gotta keep my ticker ticking…

  158. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 3:04 pm

    gigi…

Yes. And cholesterol doesn’t always mean you have a blockage. It just means you may have a problem. Did you know that your body produces over 70% of the cholesterol in your blood and that very little comes from what you eat. Cholesterol is produced by your own body to help digest the fat you eat.

  159. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 3:04 pm

    MIH,

I don’t know what constitutes angina.

I tend to have chest pain at least once or twice a year. There was a really bad one when I was trying to run 14 miles from Makapuu Pt to Kapiolani Park. That was back in 1982, 6 mos after child birth. I was out of shape.

In 2000, I had a nuclear stress test at Straub. Results — heart was normal, no heart disease!!!

Last year, I had a treadmill stress test — again normal.

so, how come I still have chest pain now and then?

  160. warriorsun March 26, 2011 3:06 pm

i cant remember looking forward to two dbs from juco as much as mike edwards (cb) and brandon leslie (s). generally, you wonder about juco dbs bc they play undisciplined and freelance. in both cases, edwards and leslie have played early in a d1a setting before jumping the juco route. sources say they are as advertised. the same source liked mouton and aaron brown (as a olb, not safety).

if they report early, work into top shape, avoid injury, learn and weave their way into our system and favor with their respective position-coaches–we could see something new in our D. a stout secondary in our system opens the playbook to possibilities that have been more wishful thinking than fact. talented athletes raise everyones level of play. hopefully these two heralded recruits can play-up to talent early in september…

  163. Pauoa Boy March 26, 2011 3:39 pm

I think our offensive line is gonna be mean with our crop of young guys. All of them recruited by Coach Shaw, so I’m sure he’s grooming them into one cohesive beast of an Oline come season time. I can see how he’s just putting the first unit out there with more experience but I’m sure the second unit’s talent and physicality is just as good as the first. I’m excited to see the potential be unleashed this year and the years to come. Love when our bigs play physical and together and dominate defensive lines. Remember when Vince Manuwai and Wayne Hunter would thrash guys and Samson Satele, Tala Esera, etc… would slam guys to the ground. I would love to see all five guys bumrush the Dline on one dive play up the gut and pancake all of em one time then get to the second level and smash the LB’s den see the secondary shi-shi pants…

  164. Pauoa Boy March 26, 2011 3:44 pm

warriorsun – I’m excited to see those two guys in action as well as Henderson, Van Ackeren, Armstrong, and Sellers. I think our seconday going be mean. Plus with my man John Hardy-Tuliau straight beastin all over the field it’s gonna be murder…

  165. warriorsun March 26, 2011 3:45 pm

finally, ricketts got her bang in the box. idk why she hasnt been inserted sooner as our regular designated-hitter?

kinda of ironic to see our most troubled spots in the order (#8 and #9) hit back-to-back homeruns….maybe, it will go viral.

  166. Pauoa Boy March 26, 2011 3:55 pm

Anyway, speaking of OLines, I hope our defensive line is playing with attitudes and mean streaks… I always thought our DLines were a little thin as far as height and weight although they still hold it down. I hate seeing our guys get dominated by bigger, physical offensive lines though like when we played USC, Wisconsin, Georgia, etc… I know we focus on speed but I would love to see big guys with speed. Regardless I hope the boys been hitting the weights hard and have been conditioning themselves so we can out physical and out hustle other teams…

  167. Da Punchbowl Kid March 26, 2011 4:05 pm

I think its gonna be a big year for Coach Shaw and the O-line.

  168. warriorsun March 26, 2011 4:13 pm

#170, PB, i cant recall uh having so much diversified talent at DT–the foundational hingepin to our D.

watch out for masch, correa and hanohano this year. different player-dna than kaniela and vaughn–they are laterally mobile and if our secondary steps up, aranda may cut them loose with creative interior rush routes. rather they be hostile, moblile and agile than just plain mean. 🙂

  169. warriorsun March 26, 2011 4:23 pm

with the exception of whinchester-makainai most of the projected ol starters have spent their careers at manoa apprenticing. they should be fundamentally sound and mature.

how good? we will know after the colorado game.

but, for pure talent on the ol, one needs to only glance to our 4-year starters over the years, like sapolo and satele, to mention a couple. if the brut offensive blocking talent is there–it will be too huge to ignore. plain as day.

apprenticeship has solid merit and is deserving, but the two are not the same.

  170. Kekoa March 26, 2011 4:32 pm

Shout out to the Hilo Fans. I had a phone-con with the Hilo Man (BHF2) hizzself this AM. He extends his apologies for being out of the loop. His legal battle with a certain pain-in-da-okole has taken all his time and attention. He will hustle back to Hilo from Honolulu for the Warrior football practice that weekend. No time to plan a proper T-gate, but hopes we can all come together on scrimmage day.

I think it would be fantastic to meet up with any of the Hilo Tsaiko’s after the practice session. BHF2 & I will be positioned near the team signing tables to corral any fans that would like to join in with us at a meeting place. Several establishments have been mentioned by BHF2, and naming one may end up being a game day decesion.

HiloBilly, BIK, or any other Big Island fan is urged to contact BHF2 at his office in Hilo. You may also drop me an email note with your suggestions at: kekoa22@aoldotcom

  175. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 7:09 pm

    gigi…

Chest pains could be from a number of causes. It could be from simple indigestion, or more serious conditions such as muscle spasm, cellular spasm and blood clots. Blood clots are the worst at they usually spell death to part of the organ or the host. Cellular spasm occurs when the arterial wall is damaged and unwelcome minerals such as calcium, cadmium, lead, aluminum, etc.. penetrate the cell walls around the damaged area. This can lead to inflamation and the gradual development of plaque.

I had no problems a couple of years ago. I could still play a set of singles Tennis without getting winded. Go hiking several miles without effort. It’s amazing how a couple years and a small percentage of additional plaque can add up and suddenly become a threat. In the smaller ateries, a 10% increase in opening could mean 100% more blood flow.

A prostaglandin hormone imbalance due to having too many free radicals in and around the damaged area could cause aterial spasm.

If antacids or vinegar don’t alleviate the pain, then you probably don’t have indigestion. Then, strong antioxidants like astaxanthin over a period of months may be your best bet. Or, if you want something stronger, try EDTA.

  176. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 7:10 pm

    Gigi…

Oh yeah…and don’t forget your 10,000 steps a day. Get a pedometer… wear it all day.. see how many steps you really take.

  177. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 7:19 pm

    MIH,

My aunt never smoked a day in her life. She was also trim and active. Yet, she died at age 59 of lung cancer.

There’s my uncle, who has a huge paunch and could be considered obese. He has diabetes. Yet, he’s going to be 79 this year, still drives his car, and golfs several times a week.

This is why I am fatalistic. What will be will be. If 2 cardiologists found nothing wrong with my heart, then what heck?

  178. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 7:20 pm

    another thing:

my aunt smoked and drank. She died at age 80.

  179. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 7:31 pm

But, I can understand your anxiety since you have angina.

  180. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 7:34 pm

A friend’s mother had heart disease and was very sedentary. She died at 86.

  181. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 7:36 pm

of course, we all want to live to 100.

but, realistically, how many of us do?

my mom is 95… god bless!

    but

    my dad died at 87.

  182. BleedGreen808 March 26, 2011 7:42 pm

Way too many mistakes on defense and it’s killing the UH baseball team. J. Arakawa pitched well for a true freshmen. He sure looks to have a bright future.

  183. jm2375 March 26, 2011 8:45 pm

Congrats to the Wahine on the SWEEP!!

  184. Lanaiboy March 26, 2011 9:00 pm

Glad I stuck out the twice rain-delayed Wahine doubleheader as the team swept Utah State. Hitting better but still leaving too many runners on base. Hope Casey Jensen can keep it up. Hit a home run yesterday and the key two-run double in the sixth inning today, which was the margin of victory and only scores put on the board the 2nd game. Pitching, as usual, terrific.

  185. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 9:21 pm

    gigi,

I had one case of angina… and an angiography that showed that I had two partial blockages in each of the three arteries feeding my heart. The doctors wanted to keep me in the hospital over the weekend and operate the following Monday. They even called my wife before I could and told her that it was imperative that I stay in the hospital over the weekend and have a triple bypass on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. After clearing my head and hearing my wife sobbing over the phone, I decided I would go home and think about it.

Over the next few days the doctors and nurses kept telling me that I could die at any moment because I was at an extremely high risk for a heart attack. The told me that no other procedure had been proven to remove blockages. They even went so far as to yell at me and say that I needed surgery ASAP! and reconfirmed with me loudly that I fully understood that I was a high risk candidate for a heart attack and that I could die at any time. The whole ordeal was harrowing to say the least, and my worst nightmare to date.

That was one month ago… my blood pressure then was 160/99 without meds…

  186. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 9:25 pm

My blood pressure when I wake up is no 145/93 and with a some natural homeopathic supplements, I keep it between 110-125/73-77 throughout the day. I eat a serving of natto daily or take 1/4 teaspoon of concentrated natto powder in lieu aspirin whenever possible.

So far.. so good. Knock on wood!

  187. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 9:26 pm

Whoo hoo.. way to go Wahine!! …

  188. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 9:31 pm

    MIH,

good luck! that was scary!!! I think I would have opted for surgery, though. I am a fan of western medicine.

  189. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 9:38 pm

    gigi..

I had read a lot before going in for the angiography…

    3.5-4% die

30% really didn’t need the operation

40% suffer memory loss or some other dysfunction

Majority need surgery again within 4-6 years.

Except for rare cases of severe heart disease to the left ventricle or valves (which I was not), the longevity of the patient was not appreciatively better than those who opted to a life on meds.

Those who have triple bypasses usually have twice the risk of heart attacks after surgery!!

The blood clot, if any, that would ultimately kill me will come from somewhere else in my artery.

Bypass surgery does not guarantee that you will be angina free.

Often, those that do become angina free simply are unable to feel their angina attack due to the bypass. This is detrimental to their health!

  190. gigi-hawaii March 26, 2011 9:43 pm

you should have gone to Straub. They are nationally ranked for cardiac care.

  191. madeinhawaii March 26, 2011 9:45 pm

anyway.. enough about me… how’s our injured basebows doing?

Eh Kid. Thanks for the kind words. I guess I owe you lunch.

Al…was nice meeting you. And yes you are a celebrity. You guys are all celebs, thanks to Cat posting your pictures from the last blog party.

I was sitting down talking story with a former DT from the Detroit Lions, when I spotted you and got as excited as a little kid. I said to _ _ _, “wow, there’s a guy from the TSAIKO blog”.

Sorry, but he wasn’t as excited, so he got up and left.

But anyway yeah, let’s do lunch.

With JJ, it wasn’t a hiring committee it was a begging committee. The committee really worked on JJ’s love for Hawai‘i.

John Fink, Edison Miyawaki, Ed Wong, Hugh Yoshida and Jim Donovan went down to San Diego, and basically made a long plea. The committee returned to Hawai‘i, and then the talks went on for another week.

On the night JJ committed, Ferd and I were camped out in the administration lobby for something like five hours. KHON was the only other media outlet to come by. The negotiations took so long KHON had to leave. So we ended up with the story at something like 11:30 at night.

I will pick you up at 6:45 if that’s okay with you.

    Comment from: Garret [Visitor]

By the way, I don’t think that HF can really think that people in this blog are hiding who they are. I’ve seen a ton of phone numbers and e-mail addresses posted here, and people’s names and faces have been shown on the blog party recaps.

gigi’s blog sure isn’t private and she has been one of the most vocal HF bashers. Jason’s fundraising didn’t hide who he was. Heck, I even once posted something relating to my work that gave my work phone number and e-mail address.

Now that ted domay (east coast) and garret (west coast) is here… (mactruck in Texas is in the middle) … I would like to share my observation that the blog has increasing traffic in the early H.S.T. hours. Most of it from our mainland friends.

Due to time differences, if ted domay posts at 0800 his time, it is 0200 in Hawaii. Garret at 0800 PST is 0500 HST, etc. So far, around 45 mainland bloggers have checked in, and one can imagine that there are 4-10 times that number shyly lurking yet.

It will be interesting to watch in the future as more bloggers appear as get closer to football season. Right now, we semi-joke that there’s a Hawaii late nite show. But it tapers off at 0100. This is where the mainland morning show could kick in.

Only problem is ST won’t get much sleep. But, he could have the only blog in Hawaii that runs full blast 24-hours a day 🙂 Could happen….

    Wife Technical Support

    Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed that the new program began with unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system activities such as: Poker Night 10.3, Football 5.0, Blogging 9.0 and Golf 7.5

I can’t seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my favorite applications. I’m thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall doesn’t work on Wife 1.0. Please HELP!!

    Thanks,

    A Troubled User

    ———- REPLY ———-

    Dear Troubled User:

This is a very, very common problem that men complain about. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!

It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is impossible to uninstall or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to not allow this.

Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings – Alimony/Child Support. I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 and work on improving the situation. I also suggest installing the background application “Yes Dear” to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command C:APOLOGIZE because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will return to normal anyway.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance! It comes with several support programs, such as: Clean and Sweep 3.0, Cook 1.5 and Do Bills 4.2. However, be very careful how you use these programs; improper use will cause the system to launch the program Nag Nag 9.5.

Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend: Flowers 2.1, Hugs 4.3 and especially Diamonds 5.0

WARNING!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary with Short Skirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

    Best of luck,

    Tech Support 🙂

Ned was down on his luck in Las Vegas. He had gambled away all his money and had to borrow a dime from another gambler just to use the men’s room. The stall happened to be open, so he used the dime in a slot machine and hit the jackpot. He took his winnings and went to the blackjack table and turned his small winnings into ten million dollars.

Wealthy beyond his wildest dreams, Ned went on the lecture circuit, where he told his incredible story. He told his audiences that he was eternally grateful to his benefactor, and if he ever found the man he would share his fortune with him. After months of lectures, a man in the audience jumped up and said, “I’m that man. I was the one who gave you the dime.”

“You’re not the one I’m looking for. I’m looking for the guy who left the door open!”

  240. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 6:38 am

A group from Chicago spent a weekend gambling in Las Vegas. One of the men on that trip won $100,000. He didn’t want anyone to know about it, so he decided not to return with the others, but took a later plane home — arriving back 3 a.m. He immediately went out to the backyard of his house, dug a hole and planted the money in it. The following morning he walked outside and found only an empty hole. He noticed footsteps leading from the hole to the house next door, which was owned by a deaf-mute. On the same street lived a professor who understood sign language and was a friend of the deaf man. Grabbing his pistol, the enraged man went to awaken the professor and dragged him to the deaf man’s house.

“You tell this guy that if he doesn’t give me back my $100,000 I’m going to kill him!” he screamed at the professor. The professor conveyed the message to his friend, and his friend replied in sign language, “I hid it in my backyard, underneath the cherry tree.”

The professor turned to the man with the gun and said, “He’s not going to tell you. He said he’d rather die first.”

A young sexy blonde went to Las Vegas. She had been in the casino for about an hour, and realized she was thirsty. So she went to the pop machine in the hall. She put $1.00 in an a Pepsi came out, she put another $1.00 in and another Pepsi came out, she put one last $1.00 in and another Pepsi came out.

A man saw her, and he said: “What are you doing?” And the sexy blonde said: “Duh!! Winning!!!”

As long as the boys take care each other and execute what they was taught, they can run the table. All they gotta worry about is themselves, they can beat anybody on any given day. What happens when they lose is because it was mostly self inflicted mistakes that was too late to overcome later in the game. I don’t think any of the teams we faced last year was better than us, even the USC rubbaz…

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I have to say that I concur together with the sentiments about getting AOL as range one particular. The comments posted along facet it sum it up nicely, that it does next to nothing to strengthen the brand, but only adds confusion. From the top rebrands within the l ist, I’d set SyFy in the high. Initially I hated the identify, because I thought they did it ??just due to the fact,??? when in reality they’d to change their name as a consequence of becoming unable to legally use Sci-fi.??? Now fairly than coming up having a whole new identify that nobody would know- and potentially lose a good deal on the previously inbuilt SciFi??? brand- they caught with all the previous name having a bit of phrase play. I can nevertheless call SyFy Sci-fi when it arrives up, and that helps make me delighted.
