Leon Schumaker

Sorry to hear about the death of Leon Schumaker. 

Leon was listed as the UH athletic department’s director of student affairs, but  that title did not fully describe the wonderful job he did in assisting student-athletes. He found ways not only to keep players eligible, but to help them graduate. If there were problems or concerns, Leon would work to find solutions. He did not fear the NCAA, he feared letting down students. 

Leon had a background in other sports. He once was football coach of the HUMMers, which was predecessor to Pac-Five. He also served as UH director of golf; once, he found a vacant area in the Stan Sheriff Center that he turned into his “golf academy.” He also was influential in giving UH coaches, namely Riley Wallace, stock-market advice. 

Too often we don’t appreciate people when they’re around. Leon will be missed.

UH gave David Veikune a second chance — and a scholarship — after he left Colorado and transferred to a junior college. 

In a show of appreciation, Veikune has donated money to help refurbish the UH football offices.

    Good morning to all! Especially the late night posters like Al, and Ralph. Almost 630am here in Arlington, TX. Things are warming up now. I don’t think we will have any cold days in the 40s. The last two days have been in the high 60s for lows, and even low 80s for highs.

    The moon was huge on rising the past two days – perigee – closest distance to the earth. I think I remember, an announcer mentioning the next time the moon will be this close to the earth will be in 2016.

    Someone asked in yesterday’s blog if the coach just hired by Oregon State was related to Colt.

    Brennan last coached at San Jose State. During his time there he was the co-offensive coordinator, tight ends coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

    “It’s going to be a heck week for me,” Brennan said in a phone interview. “I want to finish things up right here. San Jose State has been good to me. I’m saying good bye to the players. Now it’s full speed ahead to get ready for spring practice.”

    Brennan knows OSU defensive line coach Joe Seumalo from when they worked together at Cal Poly and San Jose State. He knows offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh from Hawaii and when San Jose State tired to hire him away from Hawaii. Cavanaugh also recruited his cousin Colt Brennan to Hawaii.

    Thinking about the schedule since yesterday, I think this may be one of the easiest schedule UH has played in decades. This schedule may even be easier for UH to run the table than in 2007 because no team on this schedule has been as dominant as BSU was from 2006-2009.

    The schedule has 13 games while 2007 has 12 games, so UH has more chances to at least reach double-digit wins.

    UH is catching just about every team in the year where they are transitioning to a new starting QB. UH always seems to struggle in years with a new starting QB (I think a new starting QB to start the season has been involved with every losing season since 2000) and other schools often have similar dips in the first year of a new starting QB. Isn’t it the case that every WAC road game UH will play will be against a new starting QB?

    UH does play 2 Pac-12 schools, but Washington will have a new starting QB and they went just 6-6 last year in the regular season. Colorado went 5-7 last year and has changed their coaching staff and offensive and defensive systems…catching them early in the season before they get in sync will be good for UH, as Colorado will be much better as the season goes on. Neither Colorado nor Washington is comparable to facing USC like UH did last year.

    The WAC is down, and almost no WAC teams return the QB that started for them when they started last season…except for UH with Moniz.

    Replacing BSU with BYU is great for attendance *and* reduces UH’s schedule difficulty.

    Tulane was 4-8 last season and 3-9 the season before that, 2-10 the season before that, and 4-8 the season before that. Tulane will travel far to get to Hawaii and there is a reason why they will play at UH the week before the C-USA title game…they know they won’t be in the title game.

    The positive part of the schedule is that it is very weak and UH should be able to do well with a senior QB as long as the OL does well.

    The negative part of the schedule is that the SOS pretty much assures that UH won’t be in a BCS game. Even if UH wins all 13 games, a 1-loss BSU, TCU, or San Diego State team will almost surely be ahead of UH in the BCS rankings due to SOS. Plus, BSU and TCU will start out much higher ranked than UH, which means that they will probably be ranked higher than UH even if they lose a game.

    So, we might as well add the 12/24 Hawaii Bowl to the schedule. At least UH will be in a bowl game–not that long ago UH could win 10 games and have no bowl to play in.

    “It was an extremely difficult process,” WAC commissioner Karl Benson said. “This was the first time we’ve had an imbalanced schedule, with four of the schools having four road games and four having three road games. And the last-minute changes by Fresno State and Nevada made it more challenging for us.”

    This is from ST’s article today and is total BS by Karl Benson. Fresno State made a last-minute change? They announced the SDSU game more than 3 months ago! Maybe if Karl Benson hadn’t forbidden them to participate in any scheduling meetings the WAC would have known about that game. Or maybe if the WAC had even one competent person involved in making up the schedule they would have CHECKED what nonconference games Fresno State was playing!

    Karl Benson once again shows that he’s incompetent. The sad thing is that he’s also showing that he’s petty, holds grudges, and is deceitful.

    Met Leon in Waikiki surfing and spent time at his home watching FB. As I recall, he was also a ‘hard nose’ FB player too. Good memories of a wonderful man with whom I lost touch with.

    Sorry to hear of Leon Schumaker’s death. Before he went across the street to Lower Campus, he was VP and taught at UHS. I took a class from him in 7th or 8th grade. He was tough but a great teacher. I remember him fondly. IIRC, didn’t he play in the NFL?

    There are parallels between the 2007 and 2011 UH football seasons. The biggest difference is that the Warriors won the 2006 Hawaii Bowl to finish in the top 25. That meant they were ranked entering the 2007 season, despite the poor strength-of-schedule. If the Warriors had beaten Tulsa in the 2010 Hawaii Bowl, they would be ranked entering the 2011 season. Then if the Warriors were to run the table, while they might not crack the BCS, at least they would be in the discussion.

    Interesting report that Gib Arnold might be in line for a pay raise/extension.

    The way it is now, the so-called Punahou hui provides about $150,000 to pay for 1.5 assistant coaches’ jobs. Does that mean the hui would pay for the raise?

    I was thinking of a different plan. How about UH pays for the $150,000 subsidy and, in turn, the hui money would pay for basketball expenses, such as recruiting and other program needs.

    Whatcha think?

    Expected the Wahine softball team to drop out of the rankings after their losses, but they kept their top 25 rankings with 25th in the ESPN and 21st in the USA Today polls. Glad to find out that the UH softball web site has finally got rid of the BYU stats (BYU hacker?) for the UH ones and updated the season statistics. UH can still have a successful season if it starts winning this weekend against the Utes. Conference play is the 2nd season and is the most important for postseason opportunities. Go Bows!

    Speaking of food. Is there a way that the concessions at the baseball (and softball) games can have different food for each game. It gets boring to eat hot dogs, chili, fries, burgers every day for 4 days straight. If there was another stand with a plate lunch that changes each game, it would help. If not, I am going to keep in bringing in my own food a few games a series.

    I met Veikune’s father once at a Na Koa lunch when it was David’s first year. This was before most fans knew who he was. During lunch, we were talking and he mentioned that his son plays on the team. After asking which player, he said something like, “remember the personal foul on the kickoff/kickoff return?? Yeah, that’s why son.” I remembered that play from the previous week because I was thinking during the game, what a “dummy”!

    Water Polo: DKAC Thursday the #5 Na Wahine water polo team will take on #11 San Diego State at 6 p.m.

    Friday at the RWSS Na Wahine Softball opens WAC play with a single game against Utah State at 6 p.m.

    Saturday at the RWSS Na Wahine and Utah State will play a DH starting at 4 p.m.

    Pomai – I think there are lunchwagons already on campus that serve food at lunch. They must have some kind of agreement already set up with Sodexho. Maybe they could set up outside the walkway to Murakami Stadium when both sports are going on same time?? It might be worth their while. If they tried to set up for only one sport, it might be a tough sell.

    forget the lunchwagons unless new contracts are drawn up with Sodexho, they prevented a concessionaire from selling plate lunches at the grass fields while UH held its 7 aside tournament a couple of weeks ago.

    I am assuming a concessionaire must have prior approval and contract to be able to set up shop on campus, upper or lower.

    I’m hoping that coach Coolen has the Wahine SB team working on fundamentals this week. Preparing for their WAC opener is prolly priority one.

    There were several things noted during that disasterous double-header loss last week. Aside from the obvious lack of fire power from the offense…there were basic defensive calls that a team leader (catcher or pitcher) could’ve orchestrated by taking charge of the situation. It’s this kind of communication with each other that can help make the right play.

    Whatever they choose to do, I hope it includes anticipating the options and helping each other execute the correct one.

    Let’s Go SoftBows…Rattle those bats!

    Ralph – IIRC, you’re supposed to get permission to bring in food not catered by Sodexho. But somehow, we always got around it when I worked at the School of Public Health. At least Sodexho is not SAGA. That was bad food.

    Anyone else think that the JJ situatiuon after the sugar bowl has given Hawaii “quick raise” syndrome? I know Gib has done an exceptional job, but geez, it is his first year. If someone is willing to bolt after just one year, with (at least an outline) of a decent contract already in place, then they have no aspirations of staying anyway. I’m not saying that Gib even wants to leave, just reacting to the speculation.

    Even with Mack, the masses were calling for raises/restructuring after last season. They must have forgotten how disappoionting the previous two were. Don’t go blowing money when you don’t need to.

    As for yesterday’s hearing on the UH Special Funds bill, the Senate Education Committee has passed the bill out with amendments in a somewhat complicated political maneuver which will force the House & Senate into conference sometime in mid-April to hammer out the differences between their two versions. Best guestimate on the outcome is that the Department of Athletics will not be hammered in the conference discussions.

    My hearing loss repair surgery yesterday went well but my left ear looks like I lost a boxing match what with the patch and dressing on it. Hopefully, that will be no longer required by this weekend. I’m back at work today and headed out the door now to the Capitol for a number of hearings starting at 1:15 pm.

    Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

    #58, Stretch, had that converstion with some softball boosters his past weekend. The thing I suggested is that the culinary arm of UH take over some of the venues with the business school running the whole operations. Students can work and make money and gain the credits & experience.

    While they’re at it, run a hotel and travel agency for visiting teams etc. Students gain experience and classroom credits.

    I’m tired of hotdogs, teriburgers, saimin, nachos, chili. Some people consider these dishes to be junk food.

    Went to the Centenary game this past weekend and as I was in line to get tickets a gentleman come up to me and offered free tickets. I accepted with the uderstanding that I buy them a couple of beers. Bought them two Marzens and later donged them with a small bag of dried aku that I happened to have for munching durign the game. Dey had one big smile on da face! No mo dat kine pupu at the Les.

    To me the first season wasn’t disappointing at all. In fact, few, I believe, really thought the Warriors had a chance of making a bowl game.

    Mack’s current pay, I believe, reflects what head coaches in the upper half of the D-1 football bowl conferences typically make. It wouldn’t hurt to give him an extension of his current contract and dress up the assistant coaches’s salaries a bit.

    2010 should be a memory, a good one though, but alas it’s a MEMORY. That goes for ALL sports. Moments will never die, but living in the past is useless.

    Took me about three months to erase all games I saved on DVR of last season’s softball run, but before the fall, I made sure to erase them. I have no game footage of 2010 softball left and I was asked MANY times if I wanted DVD copies and I declined them all. I don’t even bother wearing the white WAC Softball champs or the green WCWS shirts anymore. I wore both shirts once or twice during the summer and that was it.

    I ALWAYS found it hard to watch old games or footage of seasons gone past, especially when we are in the middle of the current season. 2007 I recorded all games of UH football ONLY for a friend of mine that was living in Japan that year so I mailed them all to him. I never ONCE watched ONE game from that 12-1 season ever again because I already knew what took place, the memories live in my mind and there is no need for me to watch them again.

    Personally, I am only concerned about today. Today is what I and many of us have to deal with and it’s the ONLY thing I care about.

    Respect and appreciate all we’ve accomplished in all sports and focus on today.

    MIH #91 . . . I didn’t have great expectations for year one, but thought they should have played better than they did, but I agree that expectations were low. In regards to his salary, I have no complaints, just don’t feel like he needs any more. And I would love for the assistants to get paid more too.

    I guess my main point is that . . . if Gib were to seek another opportunity after one year, than that would be an indication of his desire to use UH as a stepping stone. In that case, we shouldn’t waste money trying to keep him. Now, that doesn’t mean I want him to go anywhere, let alone think that he wants to go anywhere either.

    that it happened to be recorded on. Memories are in my mind from watching live

    with radio, then going home to watch tv version, but still enjoy reliving the wonderful moments, again and again and again.

    LizK, I wanted to pay him for the tickets as they were very good seats in the lower section but he refused payment.

    On another note, we were seated rigth next to the Centenary bull pen and were able to watch the pitchers warm up. In the front row, there were a lot of kids checking the players out. Between innings, the reserves warming the players up would occasionally toss a ball to the kids. They were so excited to get a ball. Those Centenary ball players are a real class act.

    Maybe it’s my personal preference, but I just cannot watch old games, no matter how big or good they were. For me, they’re ok to watch for a few weeks after the fact, but after that I cannot.

    It’s been that way for me for the longest time. Back in 1997, my favorite NHL team, the Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. I recorded that game and watched it a few times after, but as soon as the next season came along, I was too interested in them repeating, which they did, to even bother watching that 1997 championship as it already felt “old” to me.

    Even if one season is great and the next is so-so or bad, I still cannot watch the previous good season. It won’t make me feel better because I’ll just be hungrier for more new victories and accomplishments.

    My first ever team coach for hockey taught me about no one caring about what you did yesterday. It’s a cliche, but it’s true.

    Sometimes in the competitive world of coaching, opportunity comes knocking on your door even if you aren’t looking for advancement. Running a successful program will attract offers and better incentives. At what point are you then able to not accept a better offer. I don’t know of too many who have turned down lucrative contracts to stay in one place. Maybe for some who have all ready set themselves up to be financially secure for life but $ make he world go round.

    Nothing like guranteeing a prolonged pay cut in a contract to force them to go looking for something better.

    Br careful of what you ask for. You might get it.

    Probably has to do with the prep time and quantity. There’s usually an exact count for food prepared for SSC and Ed Wong gatherings. Plus, the kitchen is 50 feet away.

    NSF – the KCC dining facility (& the med school cafeteria) are run by the KCC culinary arts students. When I worked at Leahi Hospital, we would go over to KCC almost everyday.

    Sodexho’s food quality varies according to the chef and the level. Regular cafeteria food is not as good as the catered food they provide for special events. Sodexho has the contract for several high schools.

    SteveM – wasn’t there talk last year of ST running a lunch wagon if he found himself out of a job? 😀

    Wahine is the victim of their own success. Hopefully, they have come down from earth and eating some humble pie. The bottom 3rd of the order has not done the job. Overall hitting is down from last year putting more pressure on Ricketts and Parnaby. Defense making much to many errors also. Bottom line, this edition does not appear as good as last year.

    But, there’s some time, like right now and going forward to right the ship. When you look at it the only game they were blown out was against Oregon. Problem is at times it was the errors, other times too many strikeouts, other times not getting the timely clutch hit, a passed ball, a wild pitch, etc. etc. etc. The lack of consistency is evident and maybe the Wahine are feeling the pressure of trying too hard instead of just doing their jobs. One example is that it appears that the hitters are swinging for the fences too much, thus a lot of strikouts. Just make good solid contact and everything will fall into place.

    Derek the Na Wahine was always grounded and the girls remain humble. Last year’s success did not spoil them, they were elated with their success, their fans were elated but that was last season, time for them to move forward and that was what they did coming into the fall workouts.

    The girls are not swinging for the fences, and they are not playing small ball with only two left hand batters on the roster, one of them Majam. A team like Cal had four lefties with only the 4th batter hitting from the right side in the top 5 batting order. They slapped and they bunted, and they have blazing team speed. UH starters are not blazers with the exception of Aguirre and Kliebenstein.

    I think more former players would donate if there was an actual wish list. For instance, all of the budget stories now focus on salaries and travel subsidies. Who’s going to want to donate to that? If UH were to say it is seeking donations to renovate the locker room or buy more laptops, then former players could rally around that. All we hear is there’s a deficit, and it seems to remain the same whether basketball revenue goes up or students pay fees.

    IIRC, there was dreams of ST opening a Tsaiko Lounge in the old SA building with a restaurant and live music by the musical Tsaiko peeps. A place where the F’s is the mantra.

    2010 Na Wahine was a special bunch of ladies who was playing loose and having fun. 2011 ladies have just as much potential but are trying to find their “game”. As the season goes along, we’ll win our share of games and will develop the personality. I still feel we could have won each game so far this year. Never felt the team was over powered by any team we faced. All were winnable.

    Could the fact that all the talk about the athletic department deficit keeps potential donars away with the fear of how their donations will be handled? Perhaps worried their monies will fall into the $10 million dollar “black hole”???

    Maybe if more were educated with how to donate through the UH Foundation towards specific programs, then it wouldn’t be so bad.

    We’ve taken it upon ourselves to remind boosters and outright donors to UH softball that ALL of their monies go directly towards the program and not a budget deficit where their monies will never be put to use for the program they intended it to be for.

    One would imagine that most would recommend that a priority list should be contrived according to what UH coaches ask for first, but maybe one should really consider talking to the lower campus maintenance crew/staff as much as the UH coaches.

    The lower campus crew knows the campus like the back of their hand and they see the deficencies and know the problems at a very personal level.

    UH’s coaches ALL dream big of what they feel they need can help their staff and student-athletes progress and succeed and usually the requests are quiet expensive, or at least CAN be expensive.

    I’ve seen basic issues with broken paper towel dispencers on the first floor of the athletic complex and even in the SSC bathroom in the backstage area next to the large entrance leading to the court floor, to sinks that are falling apart, etc… these things cannot be as expensive as a new jugs machine, but would make a nice difference if repaired or maintained.

    Gotta start small first and then work your way up.

    As one UH coach says: “sweat the small stuff”…

    Mr. Leon Shumaker was the athletic department academic advisor my last 3 years at UH. A very nice man who sat all of us down one on one in his office and mapped out a plan for graduation and stayed on top of us in getting it done. As head academic advisor Mr. Schumaker handled tuition, housing, books, scholarships, financial aid and employment for all student athletes. During my final year and after graduation I did not have any money to fly home. I spoke to Mr. Schumaker on this subject and less then one day he found me a job lanscaping a home in Diamond Head. Was hard work as it took 3 days to get it done and I was paid well enough to buy my airline ticket. That experience taught me well that in life to earn a living you must work hard and getting your hands dirty as oppose to dribbling a basketball set me on the road to the beginings of employment after athletic scholarship was done.

    Appreciate Leon Schumaker for not only his care for all of us student athletes to graduate but giving me the opportunity for what the “real world” is all about when the athletic and television lights are no longer shining and there is no more write ups on you in the sports section.

    That’s one of those things I forgot. Leon was in charge of finding housing for student-athletes. That’s not such an easy task.

    Your story also is a reminder how a scholarship doesn’t cover the airfare for players. I remember a 6-foot-11 basketball player verbally committed to UH, then de-committed because he couldn’t afford the airfare from New Jersey to Hawaii.

    Defensive lapses? Definitely—the wahine have lost a few games because of errors.

    Bottom 3rd of the order has not done the job? The last 4 games, except for Majam, Klibeinstein, and J-Rod taking healthy cuts at the plate, the rest have struggled.

    Last year’s WCSWS batting order: Majam, Iwata, Gonzalez, Rodriques, Aquirre, and 6-9th batters, Pu’u-Warren, Tauali’I, Grimes, and Yoshikawa was an integral part of last year’s run for the NCAA Championship. Not only were they (Pu’u-Warren, Tauali’I, Grimes, and Yoshikawa) solid at the plate, but they were all solid defensive players. At home plate Klibenstien is starting of stronger at the plate than Grimes, but Grimes at this point has the nod as a better defensive catcher; At first, Robinson is doing the a creditable job at the plate and at first, but a big nod goes to Tauali’I; At second, Dara Pagaduan has played the most—so far, good glove, 1 HR, but otherwise no offensive threat; At right coach started with Jensen, but that didn’t work out, so J-Rod have been manning right field. Last year, J-Rod at DP put up outstanding offensive stats. This year, the DP has been a “no show” at the plate.

    Yep! A lot of strikeouts, but I’d say Majam, Klibeinstein, and J-Rod goes down swinging with a healthy cut at the ball. No pun intended, but the rest IMHO is getting fooled by a lot of off-speed pitches—a lot of anemic-defensive 3rd strike swings at the plate. This past home-stand the wahine’ hitters were having problems with that off-speed stuff, more so when the pitcher’s change-up delivery was the same as a fast ball delivery. Definitely, the wahine’ batters are having a hard time picking up the ball as it comes out of the pitcher’s hand. Last year the ball looked like a basketball coming out of the pitcher’s hand, but this year, the wahine’ batters are seeing golf balls. LOL…Definitely the coaching staff is saying “think fast fall, but keep the hands back before committing to a pitch. Be patient at the plate, look for your pitch, and good things will happen”.

    Pu’u-Warren, Tauali’I, Grimes, and Yoshikawa took a lot of pressure of Majam, Iwata, Gomez, J-Rod, and Acquirre. From top to bottom, there were no EASY OUTS. Last year’s line-up was definitely a murderous row…LOL…that rivaled the ’27 Yankees’ murderous row.

    This Friday the WAC season begins…and, like last season Ricketts and Parnaby will dominate on the mound…but, will the wahine’ bats come alive?

That year, we started at 7:45 while she started school at 8:15. I was always late. One day I walked in late, Mr. Schumaker looked at me and said “Your sister?” He never marked me down for being late.

    Beautiful sunny day here in LA as I get ready to adventure in it. Mr. Tsai, al and d1shima it was an HONOR to write my experience on Leon Shumaker. A GREAT academic advisor who was organize at all times and made it very clear on the importance of graduating as student athletes. I am very sad for his passing but I know he is up there with the angels advising them on many subjects that he was knowlegable on and advising them on basic requirements. Good to see the blog is back to normal with well written posts, humor and compassion for one another. Hope it can remain this way despite the appearance of negative bloggers who enventually will make there way back. The passing of Liz Taylor is a sad one as she was the last true hollywod screen legends. A beautiful and brilliant actress who did a lot with her fame by raising millions of dollars for those suffering from hiv and aids. Liz Taylor had a COMPASSION towards human kindness as the world is truly better for having her in it. There will never be another talent nor beauty like Elizabeth Taylor. RIP Queen Cleopatra.

    You see, according to Wikipedia….

    Whipple Jones III is a fictional character on CBS’s daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful. He had been portrayed by Rick Hearst from February 13, 2002 to August 29, 2002 and was absent for nearly seven years before returning to the show on July 17, 2009….

    However, what they don’t tell you is that Whipple Van Ness Jones, III is a real person.

    Whip resides in NW Florida with his wife, 3 children, and pets.

    The problem is that when the BP oil spill happened Whip and his family lost their family business in Seaside, Florida the name of the store was Molly Caroline’s named after his two daughters Georgia Caroline and Molly Catherine (Whipple Van Ness Jones, IV wasn’t born yet when they opened their store).

    Whip loved the idea that The Bold and the Beautiful named a character after him, he thought it was fun because obviously how else would they come up with the EXACT SAME NAME for the show.

    Whip contacted the show early on (sent a copy of his birth certificate and drivers license), they didn’t offer any money (and Whip didn’t ask for any), just an autograph from the star portraying him.

    The problem is NOT that Whip has a character on a show, the problem is Whip and his family lost their main source of income due to the BP oil spill.

    Now when Whip applies for a job, and the employment places run a reference check on him and find a Wikipedia article calling Whip a fictional character on CBS’s daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful, they claim he is using the name of a soap opera character…

    What Whip did was start his own dot com….and is allowing people to post blogs on his site for free, just to show that he is a real person.

    Google does give Whip a TINY amount to have ads on the right hand side of his webpage.

    Please pass this along to your friends to show that Whipple Van Ness Jones, III is not only a real person, but a man trying to keep food on his family’s table.

    PS- Whip and his family did put in a claim with BP, they just haven’t heard anything yet. AS OF MARCH 24, 2011

    PPS- Also, some people consider CBS to have BORDERLINE stolen Whip’s identity. Whip doesn’t see it this way, but how would you feel if you couldn’t get a job based on what Wikipedia says about you????
