Friday's practice

The Warriors today  had a modified situational scrimmage during the final spring practice before spring break. The Warriors set up plays for third-and-7 and second-and-12 situations, and so forth.

• The offensive line had its ups and downs. At one point, head coach Greg McMackin decided to coach the line, emphasizing an aggressive “punch” — the thrust block — during passing drills.

• Billy Ray Stutzmann and Corey Paclebar were the No. 1 slots again, with slotback Allen Sampson practicing at left wideout. Sampson said he is trying to gain weight and strength while learning to play the outside in addition to his slot duties. He said it has been difficult to maintain the weight with all of the running the receivers do in practice.

• Except for right wideout Royce Pollard, the three other receiver positions are open — and will remain that way through the first couple of weeks of training camp in August. The coaches want to give some of the newcomers a look, as well as give Miah Ostrowski a shot.

• With John Hardy-Tuliau playing well at right corner, it appears that Kamalani Alo has emerged as the No. 1 quarter (nickelback).

Today’s football practice is important for the Warriors, who have one last chance to make an impression before spring break. During the one-week hiatus, evaluations will be made, and the depth chart will be adjusted.

UH also will conduct auditions for two more walk-on kickers today. The Warriors have three kickers on the spring roster — Tyler Hadden, Kyle Niiro and Kenton Chun — and at least one more will join this summer.

Happy birthday to the Upper Campus “athletic director” Carl Furutani.

Top 5! Should be a battle with the kickers. I remember both local products having great legs. I saw Niiro in high school kick a 53yarder, and in the same game kick a 70 yard punt.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Having a reliable kicker is HUGE for the team. When it’s 3rd and 15 on the 35, a consistent kicker means we can live with a 5 or 10 yard play and get 3 points. Without a kicker, we would have to go for a 15+ yard play and if we don’t complete the pass, we punt. The whole play calling mentality changes. I hope one of these guys can step up.

  19. Stretch March 18, 2011 7:42 am

#17 – I think it helps to have confidence in your kicker to make a decision. If you know the kicker can make it, it’s an easy choice, you kick. When there is doubt, there are too many options – go for the first down, attempt the fg or punt. That’s too much to think about in a few seconds for some.

I will not be going to Hilo.

OK, gigi. You could also pick them up in person, like on April 16 since he plans to attend the Karaoke Call with las vegas. We might even have an earlier lunch time Cruisers Call if he wants. Qingdao and Jeju Island has me curious and he’ll have some souvenirs to show.

Kinda ironic that he gets off his “all he can drink for free” cruise ship to do a land excursion to a brewery… and he does not drink anymore.

BTW– Tom, if you see this, take a lot of photos of the interior and other areas of your ship (Azamara Quest) to show us.

I see quite a few block kicks and field goals, also some long kick off and punt returns for touchdown, with Dick Tomey at the helm of that group.

But Dick Tomey’s most important value to the team may come in the recruitment end, especially with local athletes. What do you think, Sportsforfun?

  37. WahineSoftballFan March 18, 2011 9:32 am

    LizKauai,

#35, just stating fact at the moment.

  38. Bowwar March 18, 2011 9:35 am

I think its a bit disconcerting that we recruited a Top 6 rated kicker in Hadden, but we still feel the need to consider walk-ons, etc. Either we have no confidence in Hadden or he has not lived up to his advanced billing. We should settle on a kicker by the end of Spring Camp…

It’s always good to have a back-up punter just in case Dunnache gets hurt or if we need a “specialized” kick (e.g. sideline punt, etc.) versus a boomer…

  39. warriorsun March 18, 2011 9:37 am

Papa Leahy called it an epidemic and Lori Santi said it was contagious.

The two were the K5 team covering the wahine DH at Wahine Softball Stadium last night. They both were referring of course, to the slumping wahine bats and 26 strikeouts in the 2 DH losses to BYU and Iona yesterday in which Hawaii was shutout over a combined 20 innings.

WSF has been steadily vocal on this issue and has stated the obvious many times and bc he was bullied for expressing his opinion he stood his ground against a culture of scorn, intimidation and vindictiveness designed to ridicule, discredit and silence his expression.

To the point where Stephen Tsai, the resident blog-guru suggested by unsubstantiated heresay that WSB was mentally-ill.

Kind of smacks of what is happening in Japan at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant as the crisis deepens. Officials lie, deny, deceive their own and spin to downplay the severity of this tragic event involving the melt-down of the Fukushima nuclear reactors.

    Who are they protecting?

certainly not their very own or the global community. They have lost credibility.

Ditto with the ban on the wahine crisis.

There is a batting melt-down occuring on wahine team 2011.

And Denial, censor, mean-spirited attempts to quash legitimate opinion wont remove the crisis or hold accountable those who are responsible.

The demeanor in which legitimate view is handled and perceived on this blogsite is reprehensible. Stop the bullying and cult intimidation!

  40. WahineSoftballFan March 18, 2011 9:47 am

The one big plus, and I do mean BIG, for the Wahine Softballers, is the return of John Nakamura as hitting coach, due to Kaulana Williams being on maternity leave. John was the main reason why the 2007 team went all the way to the NCAA Super Regional, in Tennessee.

He made Kate Robinson into a tremendous hitter, not to mention all the other players. I saw and witnessed the turnaround that team had due to his teachings. Now just hoping he has enough time to work his magic with this team, and that they all listen to his teaching talent.

    Al,

    I read the book!

  59. warriorsun March 18, 2011 10:24 am

WSF, I taped the DH with several friends. Most of the problems are basics. Like I said, go back to the cage and rebuild. With the exception of Kelly Majam and Jenna (JRod doesnt use an open stance–she is OK in her squared, high-elbow, traditional-stance–except for ball selection).

The open-stance batting posture is causing problems in swing mechanics: head is out of position, not down on contact and out, weight-shift is forward causing shoulder to open quickly and so much inconsistency with elbow and hand extension over the plate. mechanics in combo with bad pitch selection and an obvious loss of confidence is causing a spiraling down effect. Leahy and santi were correct–it looks epidemic-like and contagious.

I saw the registration of concern on both Coolen and Titcomb’s faces.

They know they have a problem.

However, repetition will not help. Practice makes perfect does not apply.

Coaches must practice perfect in the cage. get back to basics, Titcomb can handle and is very competent, but ditch the open stance (JMO), especially with jess, aquirre, sharla and sarah–they are all pull-hitters. jess has her foot in-the-bucket and her swing, sometimes is out of control. her swing is out of rythm and off balance. most of the wahine are not keeping their weight in back, except for kelly and JRod and their swings are off balance.

To be honest, they look terrible mechanically. never seen it this bad.

get back to basics. wahine are much too good and experienced as batters to stay down.

Coach Coolen and Titcomb can do it and are very competent but must attack the problem with basic application.

  60. gigi-hawaii March 18, 2011 10:26 am

well, how’s the weather in Manoa? Sunny in Foster Village now!

  61. papajoe2 March 18, 2011 10:28 am

  62. Stretch March 18, 2011 10:30 am

I would rather read posts like the one above than others that are personal attacks against players and coaches. Each person has an opinion but delivery of that opinion is the difference.

    Warriorsun,

Like I mentioned before, help is on the way, in the form of John Nakamura, the Wahine hitting coach back in 2007. Made that team an excellent hitting team, with the likes of Kate Robinson, Kaulana Gould (at that time), Tanisha Milca, etc.

  65. sportsforfun March 18, 2011 10:39 am

I agree, John Nakamura will help them get out of their doldrums.

    Hey, there.

I really don’t want to censor the guy because, I’ve been told, he’s not well. And I do know of people that have had health mental-health problems, so I try to be patient. It’s obvious the guy doesn’t have any family or friend support, so he needs an outlet.

The best thing probably would be not to engage in any conversations with anyone whom you would not want to engage in a conversation with. In real life, nobody would want to sit or talk to someone like that, so why would you want to do that here. If you were in a bar, you’d just change seats while making the don’t-serve-anymore-beers sign to the bartender.

I ignore people who I find to be just unhappy and lonely. At first I felt bad, then I figured, ah, can’t change some people. So I ignore ’em and live a much more stressless life.

  71. warriorsun March 18, 2011 10:45 am

kelly and JRod are Ok. majam takes a lot of pitches early and starts to jump the pitch after she has seen the pitcher once, but majam is vulnerable on the outside corners. bc she is balanced, kelly sprays to all fields. her clutch-single in the nightcap in extra inning was classic and a great illustration of sound fundamentals, even with an open stance, her weight remains on her back-foot and she has good extension with her hands on contact. notice her front foot is open but on its toes (to keep the weight in back). kelly is a natural open-stance batter. she is ok. keep truckin gurl! you are always an inspiration to all.

    Jenna is a classic.

when i first saw her batting stance, i first thught it was old style (back-elbow parallel to ground) and wondered if her dad taught her to bat. although she went high on one pitch to KO, but, jenna is sound. Just needs to settle down and be more disiplined in pitch selection.

#73 we taped the game. i didnt attend. Pretty revealing shots from CF, it caught one AB of Iwata axing the ball with her foot in-the-bucket. many shots of sarah jerking her head past the plate on whiffs (head should be down on the ball and bat), although she did make correction on a later ab, made connection, went with the ball to the right. sharla’s swing is heavy and out of kilter. i would even her stance and go with a compact swing. sharla has natural power but needs to develop her eye and master her swinging mechanics. just basics–she already has the talent.

Coaches have theory about open stances–among others, batters face pitchers with a square look and two open eyes. makes sense. however, it can throw a batter off balance and mechanics if weight-shift is not perfected. iwata is so talented, she can hit even when her mechanics are off. but, sooner or later it will ripple.

I think maybe a blogger has good points. Maybe he doesn’t.

    I wouldn’t know since I don’t read his posts.

What he does lack is communication skills. It’s OK to make a point, support it, and then sort of move on. And that’s valid.

But to constantly try to antagonize others is not productive.

And while it has been hinted many times to calm down, there appears to be a lack of impulse control. Again, the message has been lost by the messenger.

One other other thing, I did not give out personal information. I will take legal action against anybody who publicly said I did.

  86. Ralph March 18, 2011 11:08 am

how does an e mail address implicate a person’s name, you need a techie in the depart to ckeck the IP and trace to find the name of the computer registrant. No one would put that much effort to id a blogger, not worth the effort. Your comments and opinions aren’t well received but you do have free speech, a writer and the paper recognizes this and they would be the last individuals who would seek your id.

You sure you didn’t have a moment of forgetfulness and you forgot to change the username before you posted. It happens, A House does it all the time.

    WSF,

I believe you, but just answer me one question if you can, how did someone here get my last name, I never gave it out here. I only mention it to people I really truly know.

  97. warriorsun March 18, 2011 11:24 am

ST, talk about aggravation. some of the posters have agitated the situation too. one likes to say with regularity when he disagrees, “you need to be bitch slapped”….what is that? where was the monitoring? what about all the negativity towards opinion that is not status quo? be fair and balanced.

Didnt you say yesterday (paraphasing), “why all the fuss over a team that is 22-5”?

well, 26 KOs later against mediocrity, we are 22-7– and despite a nice editorial dodge the batting problem persists. Cause for fan concern? You bet. Leahy and Santi think so.

assume there is a mole in the cult, truth is on record.

  98. Michigan Warrior March 18, 2011 11:25 am

I don’t ever recall ST giving out anyone’s personal info. Gigi just said it… and many others figured it out when you came over here during Wahine Volleyball season and made your remarks about a certain Wahine V’ball player. Or, did you forget that you did that?

Question… does anyone attend Wahine softball practice? Are they thrown a variety of pitches, like they see in games? Just wondering what’s keeping them from seeing the ball as well as they used to. We know they have the bat speed to put the ball in play. Can’t wait for their offense to come alive again!

  99. Stretch March 18, 2011 11:26 am

Each person has an opinion but delivery of that opinion is the difference.

  100. haka March 18, 2011 11:26 am

It is obvious, by manner, character and action, that the persistence and volatile vindictiveness of a certain opinion here, always takes his personal dislikes past the point of mere arrogance and in no uncertain terms, like a spoiled rat, elects to regurgitate his complex of inadequacy on others.

To say that this individual is being unfairly singled out is an incorrect assessment when looking at the history and multiple abrasive personas that this person has used in an attempt to undermine those on his agenda. His opinion is not what is in question, but rather, it is the manner in which his ego and alter egos attack certain individuals that he has disdain for.

This individual should be left to his own devices and should have his voice of right fall upon deaf ears.

  101. WahineSoftballFan March 18, 2011 11:26 am

  109. Ralph March 18, 2011 11:31 am

WSF you tend to make statements to back your point of view and in one instance you cited that the parents of the players were coaching their daughters from the stands because Coolen wasn’t doing his job as you put it.

Looking at the starting lineups on the field, eliminate all the parents who weren’t at this tournament or last, and I can say that the parents who were there sat amongst themselves in front of the ESPN banner, several stood along the back fence. One from the mainland sat with his family in back of the boosters, another local parent sat about 15 feet to our left. Another parent of a local player on the field sits in front of the announcers booth. None of them addressed their kids during the game.

None of the parents come down to the dugout area to talk to the players, we sit directly above the dugout entrance and batter’s circle.

You can take issue with Coolen, but you shouldn’t drag the parents into your rant and imply that you had first hand knowledge of what the parents are saying when you don’t. I don’t recall any of the parents standing with you ever.

You have posted often in recent months regarding Steve. You apparently recognize his style. So, in your opinion, is Steve and WahineSoftballFan the same person, or is he just coincidentally named Steve?

Long time bloggers/chat people can recognize a person by writing style, syntax, and other variants. That’s how many people here can recognize the same person regardless of name. I have been skipping most of WahineSoftballFan’s comments so have not formed an opinion…at least I am not 100% certain they are the same person.

  138. WahineSoftballFan March 18, 2011 12:16 pm

    Warriorsun,

What I am more concerned about is when they play Fresno State. That first game will be televised nationally by ESPN. Knowing about all the brutal comments made by their announcers last year about the Wahine, and their home runs. What do you think they will say, nationally, if the Wahine are not hitting by then. Their comments can hurt recruiting, that is what I am most concerned about.

It’s obvious the WSB team is in a slump. Instead of pointing fingers at players we all should be encouraging them, not chastise them. Those that chastise may mean well but there are better way. Blaming individual players on a blog is, well try doing it in person with their parents/boyfriends present.

Yep, same person no doubt. I would lurk a bunch on CL’s blog and Steve was relentless in his “comments” regarding Mafua. I read things and see patterns. His criticism and his way of stating things is exactly the same. People have a certain style in their tone. It was pretty simple to find him out. Each name that posts more or less has the same tone and style. Steve’s just stands out a lot more, is very galvanizing, and as stated–not communicated well. I have said some negative things regarding Steve/WSF and a lot of it is from frustration. Yeah, I admit, I am still young and immature.

Blog post #319 from a few nights ago really put things into perspective though. I understand that I have been a bit immature in my comments and I need to chillax.

    homey, understand your feelings.

however, u r still talkin apples n oranges and i say that with all due respect.

being a former college athlete i dont support player ridicule, but others are different. you should be on other sites across the nation–it is quite common and comes with the territory. again, it is a matter of style and personality, sometimes–rules govern–very thin line.

look at boise state after they loss the game to nevada this year by 2 blown fgs. they needed protection for their kicker. it can get out of hand, but if it is made as expression without threat–it is hurtful but tolerated on most fan forums.

we just had a recent us sup ct decision which allowed protesters to demonstrate against a fallen soldier at his funeral under the first amendment. that really pissed-off america, but tolerance and free speech defines our country.

i wouldnt compare WSF to those nuts by any stretch. i believe some on this blogsite just want total agreement and are too immature to extend tolerance to those that differ.

That is as much at issue here as wsf’s stringent critcism.

All right, Salas! Keep it going!!!

Whomever we get to fill the receiver pukas will need great hands. Can’t afford dropped passes at any time during this important season! And, we’ll need a solid line to start off with too.

Let’s go, Warriors!!! Getting all excited again, every time ST posts news of what you guys are up to!

  186. Bowwar March 18, 2011 2:02 pm

Sports is about participation, effort, and sportsmanship…We should applaud our athletes and their efforts NOT diss them in a public forum. NONE of us are coaches (some think they are), but true fans, so let’s do our part in supporting our team.

Yes, let’s get back to talking about UH Football & Basketball…

  187. Michigan Warrior March 18, 2011 2:04 pm

Mahalo, Liz, for that bit of info! Looks like some of the hyped guys from bigger schools were just that… hyped! Lately, our former receivers have been showing the whole country what we’re really about! I love it!

ST: Thanks for the football updates.

” … • The offensive line had its ups and downs. At one point, head coach Greg McMackin decided to coach the line, emphasizing an aggressive “punch” — the thrust block — during passing drills…. ”

I was never a fan of the “two-hand push block” technique – it’s “PASSIVE”. I like the

old-fashined way of blocking – get after ’em – hit ’em with your shoulder, your elbow, your

body, your helmet – HIT ’em. Glad that at least Coach Mac is trying to get those guys

    to be aggresive.

    There…that’s better!

ST, why do you even bother with WSF? He is poisoning this blog to the point that it is worse than anything that goes on at WSN – and that’s saying a lot. WSF is just picking fights and agitating people on purpose. He has no inherent right to do so. Boards and blogs need to be moderated. Let him carry on his spiel on WSN if he would like to try. If there was a place for him, it is there. It’s the “realist” board 😉

Football…Hmmm…Aside from Spring Ball, I’m really looking forward to seeing the Gregory kid, as I hear he’s the “real deal” running back we’ve desired. If he’s anywhere close to Alex Green, it will be fun times at Aloha Stadium.

By the way, does anyone know where the UDub v. UH game will be played? I heard it will not be at Husky Stadium due to repairs. How do we get tickets?

  221. Pauoa Boy March 18, 2011 5:17 pm

Allen Sampson at wideout??? I know he got speed but I would like to think he’s more suited for a slotback role… I would like to see D-Bright or Cecil out there alongside Pollard. What the hell happened to Malcolm Lane too? In any case how is Bryant Moniz looking? I hope he has a monster year and gets some Heisman love like Colt did. It’s amazing how our offense was straight gaining yards like crazy and yet still got peeps complaining that our offense wasn’t all that. Anyway, to think Coach Rolo had the offense rolling and yet didn’t even maximize the offenses full potential. I hope he lets Moniz unleash the fury this year and break his dayum record cause Coach Rolo knows he could’ve broken it if he hadn’t pulled him out of the game…

  222. Stephen Tsai March 18, 2011 5:17 pm

I don’t want to drag this out any more than necessary, but here’s the deal: I’m getting up early to cover football. Couple of my kids are traveling on the Mainland so I’m trying to track that they’re OK. I’m trying to monitor volleyball on the radio. And this is the anniversary of my father’s death.

And through all of this, I have to be a peacemaker over … softball?

    Are you frickin’ kidding me?!?

Yes, I get the team isn’t hitting. We all get that. We’re all educated. And slumps aren’t always good things.

But is this worth losing our minds and good manners?

So knock it off. I’m not in the mood for this crap.

    So, how’s everybody doing?

  223. PowderPuff March 18, 2011 5:19 pm

I keep hearing the UH-UDub game will be at Qwest Field, just like 2 years ago. Flights on Hawaiian into Seattle that weekend and out of Vegas on the 18th are very pricey, if available.

  224. Pauoa Boy March 18, 2011 5:20 pm

    Bowwar,

I too am curious about Gregory, wasn’t he rated like in the top 50 running backs in the nation during high school? As long as he can block I’m pretty sure Coach Rolo will unleash his talents just like he did Alex Green this past year…

  225. gigi-hawaii March 18, 2011 5:22 pm

OK, I”m going back to monitoring volleyball. I’m like eight plays behind.

  229. Bowwar March 18, 2011 5:28 pm

Pauoa Boy: I’ll check on the Quest Field deal…That’s the same rumor I’ve heard. It’s actually better to get hotels, etc. if its Quest field versus Husky Stadium.

How is Lister doing? You never really hear anything about the kid in the hunt for playing time at running back. It’s too bad Te’o decided to quit football, as that kid would have been a prototype back for our offense.

ST: I’m feeling alot better not hearing about the softball team…Let them play and hopefully, do well. If they lose, sobeit, I’m sure they’re putting in the effort both by the players and coaches….So…Leave them alone! Cheer for them, yes!

  231. Pauoa Boy March 18, 2011 5:31 pm

Curious as to what the scoops are on all those highly recruited players from past years that never made it back to UH yet… like the JC guys? Reason I’m asking is cause I see alot of our Hawaii boys here at A-Dub walking around and wonder if Coach is still in contact with them. Jesse Williams seems like we lost out on him as he’s heading to Alabama. Chad Lopati, Benson Ma’afala, T.J. Alofipo, and Zach Quines I see all the time. Plus there are some other guys here too like Isaiah Iuta, Luke Spencer, Nate Bartley, all Hawaii boys…

Not an Expert — ST’s blog started to morph after Blog Party 1 (Dec 2006) and became you see today by mid-April 2006. We are in the corresponding month-day time frame now, which is why I have been doing the “Blast from the past” comment quotes the last couple weeks. Those were the formative months. The first wave Tsai-ko cast was assembling then–and note they are still here today.

Then the blog came close to dying. But ST resurrected it . This happens between now and mid-April. I might not share that… you gotta buy a book in a few years. 👿

Needless to say, there is little we haven’t seen before as things are eerily in cycles. Not an Expert — I know you have been here since at least late 2007, so have seen this. Please come out and introduce yourself….if not at games, come to the April 16 Karaoke Call. Same for everyone else who have been here for a long time and are lurking today!

  256. Garret March 18, 2011 8:56 pm

Interesting thing about the BYU/Gonzaga game tomorrow

If BYU wins, that gives the MWC $1.44 mil…but BYU won’t get a penny of that since they are leaving the conference.

If BYU loses, Gonzaga will make the WCC $1.44 mil…and BYU will get an equal share with all the other WCC teams when they join the WCC in a few months. Every game that Gonzaga wins afterwards will make the WCC $1.44 mil per win.

So, for people that hate BYU (like many of the fans of the schools left behind in the MWC), what do they cheer for? They want BYU to lose, but that costs them a *lot* of money. Plus, BYU *makes* money if they lose.

  257. Garret March 18, 2011 9:03 pm

Both the WAC and Big West were 1-and-done in the NCAA tournament…not much money for either school. If BSU, Nevada, and Fresno get equal shares when they join the MWC, that will be a significant amount of revenue. The MWC will be around $700k to $800k per school per year from NCAA tournament revenue while the Big West will be around $200k per school per year.

  258. Garret March 18, 2011 9:06 pm

The team that RGM played for last year in the CFL just traded for a player to take the returner position. I hope that RGM can get a good spot in the CFL next season, but the spots are running out right now.

basketball: trevor wiseman was a high scoring guy in high school. interesting how he has sacrificed his offensive game to focus on being the stopper on defense to find early minutes and now becomes a starter.

pretty good team player for a freshman.

  270. whitey March 18, 2011 10:23 pm

al, i think they call it game maturity or experience.

  271. whitey March 18, 2011 10:24 pm

j thomas apparently is still giving it a shot, so i think he will start to be a force in this game.

  272. whitey March 18, 2011 10:27 pm

al, agree on da warriors for 2011-12. speed, size, and talent is being upgraded big time and it will generate a lot of fan enthusiasm and bring back the crowd. know times are hard now and future is not that bright, but da warriors will be part of the new shinig light of good times ahead.

  273. PowderPuff March 18, 2011 10:29 pm

#269 – I don’t know that much about basketball, but I enjoy watching Wiseman. He plays really hard and hustles after the ball. Can’t wait for tomorrow night.

  274. Ralph March 18, 2011 10:29 pm

The Hoya Saxa falls to VCU, as in Virginia Commonwealth University.

  275. al March 18, 2011 10:31 pm

basketball (again); next year we reload and will be loaded.

we lose famous amis, yup, tough shoes to fill.

we lose hiram the forever senior. his maturity had a lot to do with our success.

we lose the future wwe champion, big bad kurtz the hurts.

    yup, that’s all folks.

expect vander, joston, to be the most improved next year.

zane drain (as in treys) johnson to be the leader of the pack.

miah will come off the hawaii bowl much better prepared and he will have his outside shot.

enter big bird rozitis to make an impact.

bobby and dom will pack an extra 15 lbs.

bo barnes will come in confident and will give us the one-two treyland punch.

then, along come the new guys.

ronnie stevens will contribute as he grows into a d1 big.

gerry blakes will lit it up and have serious minutes towards conference play.

dillon biggs will be a big time big with his high flying circus act.

michael the rest of the story harvey is the sleeper of this class, this jc swingman will be runing up and down the court.

there’s a good chance that we will land another pg before april signing day. apparently we have so many recruits going for what seems to be only one last scholie.

but you never know, because we could land up with not one more but two more guys. besides a pg, with either a big or a pure shooter. i suspect the latter rather than former.

  277. al March 18, 2011 10:34 pm

methinks we could see more two platooning next year and gibber will run his version of the run n gun. of course this would be fueled by more full court press.

  278. al March 18, 2011 10:35 pm

    yah. whitey.

inspite of tough economic times…university of hawaii sports is always a great relief from the day’s stresses.

  279. al March 18, 2011 10:37 pm

trevor wiseman would make for a great tight end.

  280. al March 18, 2011 10:38 pm

pp…and her gang should sit behind the usf bench. they could inflict more pain that way.

  281. wowlaulau March 18, 2011 10:40 pm

Well WSF looks like you and your sock puppets will be gone soon. So where will you post now? Getting banned from the other Hawaii boards makes your posting days numbered…

  282. PowderPuff March 18, 2011 10:43 pm

Ha, al! The gang better be drowned out by the sellout (or nearly soldout) crowd tomorrow night. I hope those lime green shoes come back…those were awesome.

  283. al March 18, 2011 10:44 pm

was watching the college of southern idaho jc playoff game from the other day. that team is loaded with talent.

interesting that ther is a brazilian frosh center and an aussie big on that team as well. they probably have to do the two years before being eligilble.

dariu smith the former uconn pg reminds me of tom henderson. average outside shot but can take it to the hole in a blink of an eye. passes are crisp and is always looking for the open. the guy enjoys playing defense with his lighning quick hands. at 6’2″ he is a big pg with incredible handles. and, oh yah, we are on his radar.

csi also has two smurf guards who are being heavily recruited elsewhere as well.

  284. al March 18, 2011 10:45 pm

pp…those lime greenies will be on the court per gibber. soldout is good.

  285. al March 18, 2011 10:51 pm

hopefully 7k in the stands tomw.

they should donate 1k tickets to the military.

  286. whitey March 18, 2011 10:52 pm

it seems that mbb, wvb, and da warriors are looking at very good futures and beyond. you can feel the domino effect for the other sports as the mbasebows, wsb, wbb. there are lots of room for improvements and may need the chancellor’s help to get all the alministrative side of athletics in good working order. right now it seems they are not working as one, but using their positions like individual teams.

  287. whitey March 18, 2011 10:54 pm

get big game tomorrow, so got to get my r&r for that. have a great evening.

  288. al March 18, 2011 10:55 pm

if it were up to me i’d have 5k tickets available to the active duty military for every football game. afterwhich, give them a 25% discount for any tickets after the first 5k is sold.

and for basketball at least 1k in tickets per game add a 25% discount thereafter.

developing not only good community relationships but a solid fanbase that could help establish a continental fanbase after these deserving young men and women exit the active duty status and return home.

  289. al March 18, 2011 10:56 pm

umm… after the first 5k is given away is what i meant.

  290. al March 18, 2011 10:57 pm

imagine 10k+ military folks at each footbal game.

or how about 2-3k at each mbb game?

  291. al March 18, 2011 10:59 pm

coordinate with each branch for the military appreciation day football game and have the mwr dept of each jointly hold a huge free tailgate at richardson field for them.

could be done…and they have funds.

  292. al March 18, 2011 11:00 pm

whitey will be at jack’s for his breakfast of champions tomw am.

  293. SteveM March 18, 2011 11:08 pm

On this day (March 18) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … a drop to 137 comments as ST announces the new plans for football season ticket pledges and renewals starting tomorrow–even withoiut a complete schedule yet. No night shift as las vegas once again notes LTUHF is missing. gigi-hawaii sends her letter to UH president, Chancellor, and the Board of Regents. But the general mood is lighter and the spotlight falls on bulla…

Comment from: Da Punchbowl Kid [Visitor]

Guava, oh Guava where for art thou? Was that you sitting next us at Camellia’s at lunch last week? Have you been discovered and silenced by higher ups at the Athletics department? If so, that would be a shame, because you have posted some very good info here, and your point of view will be missed. Give us a sign, dawg, we are here for you.

    aloha Kid,

how’s you doing? i gotta roll to work in about 30 minutes, but all is well. looks like it’s raining at your palatial estate, as i look over the gutter curb on kapiolani….

hope you and mrs. kid are fine and healthy, maybe this week we go do a lunch and video al eating…kind of like the iron chef meets his nemesis…..

haha, the evil laugh rings through the cramped kitchen at camellias,

    Comment from: Kazz [Visitor]

It seems that the Rainbowtique is also joining in for the upcoming football season ticket launch by having their jerseys on sale for 40.00 as opposed to 54.00.

Could they be doing this in conjunction with football season OR are they clearing out their inventory to make way for the supposed “new” Nike versions? Maybe this could explain the reason for a lack of #15’s available.

    03/18/07 @ 18:26

    Comment from: addahknowjoe [Visitor]

bulla- just saw the photo. Yup Spooky!

Whatever the size you were describing to me and ST, it got hubbys’ attention.

    It must’ve been BIG!

    03/18/07 @ 20:36

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

Addahknowjoe…is that the picture I sent bulla? If so, how about isolating him and Photoshop-ing a blog Marshall’s badge on it?

…and bulla, please don’t send the picture around…it’ll scare the children. 😉

I was at a function tonight. Besides the dozen people who asked me about the schedule, I also was asked: Who’s Bulla?

    Wow.

When Bulla and the athletic director are in the same popularity orbit, I think my work is almost complete.

    03/18/07 @ 23:14

    Comment from: Jason [Visitor]

I guess that makes Bulla the Prince to ST’s King. 🙂

say all you want about bulla now, cuz, he is still at work. but, hurry, because i think he gets off at 12:00 goes to zippy’s for a couple of bentos then home.

nothing worse than a ragin’ bull.

    03/19/07 @ 00:02

    Comment from: Jason [Visitor]

We can have ST as Mō‘ī, King of the Blog ‘Āina; bulla as Ali‘i ‘Ai Moku, Chief of The Warrior Beat; Leila as Ho‘oilina Mō‘ī Wahine, Crown Princess. And of course, we worship Iepi, the Sun God.

    03/19/07 @ 08:15

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

Ahhh Jason…bulla is great and all that (as long as there are at least 1,100 lbs of us to restrain him), but don’t forget your Uncle Kid. Picture him majestically descending the slopes of Punchbowl…leis in one arm and football in the other… welcoming new visitors to the blog.

    03/19/07 @ 09:02

[now can you guess which one is the Kid in the Tsai-ko caricature?] 🙂

Of course, bulla’s personna is larger-than-life.

    pssst…Is that enough of a disclaimer? 🙄

  299. gigi-hawaii March 18, 2011 11:45 pm

    Al,

I don’t understand your reasoning behind giving so many free tickets to the military. I thought they already have a lot of perks and make a decent salary compared to some kamaaina.

  300. papajoe2 March 18, 2011 11:45 pm

    make it 3

  301. al March 19, 2011 12:13 am

    gigi…????

are you in the middle east risking your life?

are you in the pacific waters near the orient standing by in case of a north korean uprising?

are you sitting in a boat off the persian gulf?

are you just back from being deployed at all of the above?

    are you…just for example.

or are you sitting at home watching your 50″ tv sipping on your corona all the while your roomba is push the dust around?

  302. al March 19, 2011 12:14 am

i suppose one needs to have either been in the military or is closely related to one who has experienced a wartime situation to appreciate our military.

ask kekoa, bg, sailor blue…for starters.

  303. Kazz on Droid_X March 19, 2011 12:24 am

    Al,

That was a little harsh huh? She just asked.

BTW, I have had personal friends deployed to Iraq and Kuwait. One now is a drill seargant and the other is stationed on the East Coast.

And yes I agree with giving military discounts.

  304. SteveM March 19, 2011 12:26 am

    RE: #298

gigi — no. This is same-o, same-o as far as the trolls are concerned. Did you miss last year’s all-star troll? or the one before? Heck, it might be the same guy. 😐 I don’t know and I don’t care.

How long will the blog go on? I don’t know. I imagine as long as ST wants. No track record to judge by. How long will your gigi-hawaii blog last? Blogs were relatively new 5 years ago–and a lot more perish than survive.

As an Educational Technologist, I think the Warrior Beat is unique. It’s first year (actually 9 months) took it on a different path from all other blogs . This was shaped by the personality of the blog host and the unique collection of bloggers who attended Blog Party 1–that really took it down a different road.

Tsai’s patience, tolerance, and sublime sense of humor made this blog… and he didn’t dump us when he should have back then (a story i would like to hear one day). Those who were there stick by him today… and the blog survived and went on. Note all the people you met personally back then are still here blogging today.

Anyway, the blog battle ensign is flying over the blogship right now. There are many people here who do not know what it means yet…but that just shows there are more and more people still coming aboard everyday.

  305. al March 19, 2011 12:39 am

sorry…didn’t mean for it to come off harshly. just passionate for what our military does for us while the nation is asleep.

  306. al March 19, 2011 12:54 am

one advantage for us tomw night against the usf dons could be our loud and raucous crowd. the dons’ arena is 4,800 at capacity. against idaho i don’t think 3k attended and the crowd noise does not echo throughout like the ssc.

We left The Les at the bottom of the third inning last night – not my idea of great baseball with UH’s score heading towards the double digits that early in the game – so I headed back to the office to do some paperwork.

Pomai is out sick and I would have continued to stay away from the blog due to the false accusations and blatant personal character assination/defamantion of character of UH coaching staff and former student-athletes being named in conversations that NEVER happened in an attempt to further destroy the reputation of said individuals.

It a PATHETIC excuse when other bloggers tie in our softball program with one individual’s abuse of the freedom of speech especially when other bloggers admit they never resoected UH softball as a legitimate athletic institution at the University of Hawaii and only football and basketball deserves his attention.

However those are his views and these are mine.

Anyway, now that the unnecessary name calling and lies are apparently over, I can at least continue to post without having to read the babblings of non softball realated hate propagada disguised t appear as legitimate softball discussions.

  318. al March 19, 2011 2:03 am

  319. SteveM March 19, 2011 2:04 am

Al — I concur with homey. Most anti-virus stuff only protect you from the last known/discovered virus or variant. Even your latest update is only for what was discovered and countered weeks ago, then distributed to you. What’s in the wild or being analyzed can zap you. Might as well go for low price, and use what homey recommends. I would. Doesn’t Road Runner offer a free one?

As far as the blog is concerned, it should be a place of relaxation where people can get together an talk about the sports they like, agree and disagree in a civil manner nothing wrong with that. But as Kazz said when it get to a point of character assassination or worst then I’m outa here, life is to short.

If nothing it was a wonderful display of schizophernia.

We all display those tendencies; however, as Mr. Tsai pointed out, we also display impulse control.

As much as he (they) irritated I sure hope he (they) seeks assistance so no one else must suffer more of his (their) behavior.

    Thank you, Mr. Tsai!

Good photo of the green shoes! I could not picture them even with the descriptions here and in the articles.

Do they glow under black-light? If so, add some black-light to the SSC during games to give the players that little bit extra.

Al, let’s not to forget to mention Pii Minns and Jace Tavita. These guys redshirted a whole year, sat, went to school, practiced, and cheered the team every game on the sideline at home. They are just waiting their turn to contribute in some way. Minns was the State Player of the Year at Kamehameha and first went to Chaminade. Was Ostrowski Player of the Year? Anyway, my point is that Minns stood out, the creme de la creme in Hawaii High School and that he can make big shots. We won a State Championshi and was MVP. He’s good. At 6’3″ and athletic he has a lot of potential. Maybe he put on another 15 to 20 lbs. of mucle. That would be something.

Tavita was a starter at Utah before he transferred to Hawaii. At 6’4″ he provides much needed depth and he has had DI experience under his belt. He’s built and tough. That’s what our teams needs. Toughness. These 2 guys may not be on scholarship, but they are a lot better than the prior walk-on we had during Nash’s era. These guys can play and will complete to get some playing time.

Would it be that Arnold’s Army will have not 2, but maybe 3 platoons/units??????? I like your nicknames, especially about Harvey. Very funny. The way I see it, the bugaboo for this team is free throw shooting. Not very good. During the offseason guys like Miles, Ostrowski, Thomas, etc. need to work on their shot every day to improve. Look at guys that shoot close of 90%. These guys have a rhythm and a technique and is so basic. Players can improve their shooting if they are practicing the proper technique and a routine that works every time. The only guys I trust right now are Barnes and Johnson.

Would like to attend the UW game in Seattle. Unforgettable College Football atmosphere. Need to prepare your okoles for the bench seating, though.

Hoping for a repeat of what happened back in 1973 @ Husky Stadium. UH players were laughed at when they entered the stadium back then. Three hours later, it was the UH team that was laughing. UH-10 UW-7. Levi Stanley played a memorable game, as did Hal Stringert and Jeris White. This was a D-II program at the time.

  349. Derek March 19, 2011 8:04 am

Dave, I’ve been to Husky Stadium and it’s a great setting, especially when the weather is nice in early fall. Sept. 10 seems to be a very nice time of the year in Seattle and we hope the weather will cooperate. When it gets cooler and rainy, it is not a good feeling watching a game in person. At said, the game I went to was in 1999 when UW played Colorado. Rick Neuheisal was coaching and Marques Tuiasosopo was the QB. Colorado’s coach was Gary Barnett and they had this outstanding kick retuner whose name escapes me right now. It was an exciting game and UW pulled it out, something like 35-28. My son was attending UW at the time as a freshman. UW had an outstanding season, won the PAC 10, and went to the Rose Bowl. Best I can remember, that’s the last time Washington went to the Rose Bowl which is a long time ago. Funny I bring it up right now. We are playing both Colorado and Washington the first 2 games of the season. Maybe I good omen. We’ll be attending the same in Seattle with a lot of our friends, plus we have a lot of high school classmates living in the Seattle area.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
