Thursday ramblings

• Although Tyler Hadden is considered the Warriors’ No. 1 placekicker, the Warriors are investing in insurance plans. Last summer, Scott Enos (lower back) and Hadden (leg strains) experienced discomfort during training camp. That is why walk-on Kyle Niiro was added to the 2010 roster, and punter Alex Dunnachie will work on kickoffs this spring. It also is why Kenton Chun, a former All-State kicker from Saint Louis School, will be given an opportunity to compete. Chun has been mentored by Peter Kim, who was Bear Bryant’s kicker at Alabama. Chun, a senior, competed at Southern Utah before transferring to UH.

• The UH coaches are jokingly using the phrase “calling in the mortgage.” It is a reference to wanting slotback Miah Ostrowski, currently moonlighting as a point guard on the basketball team, to rejoin the Warriors sooner rather than later. Ostrowski, who is on football scholarship, is the leading candidate at right slotback.

• With each of the quarterbacks getting extensive passing reps, the Warriors are without a scout quarterback. Yesterday, that job was filled by Kyle Kamau, a team manager. Kamau, whose father and grandfather were NFL trainers, showed some pop on his throws.

• The April 9 scrimmage/practice is set to start at 11 a.m. on the Kamehameha-Hawaii campus.

• Former UH running back Alex Green has private workouts scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams.

Happy birthday to Laura (Chee) Pennington and Robert Kekaula.

  13. Pauoa Boy March 10, 2011 5:32 am

Unfortunate loss for our Warrior Basketball team but at least they can continue to play and hopefully win the CIT tourney.

Football is back finally…time to get the kinks worked out and find some ballers ready to step into the spotlight and wreck shop this year!

  14. 808ike March 10, 2011 5:41 am

  18. d1shima March 10, 2011 5:58 am

CIT was a two-week tourney last year, 3/16 thru 3/30, with a 16-team field. Any idea what the format is this year?

Wonder how “jocular” the comments will be from the FB staff if Miah is still playing MBB until close to the end of the month?

  19. jm2375 March 10, 2011 6:09 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Happy Birthday to Ms. Pennington, Mr. Kekaula & Mr. Weir.

Can we all play nice today?

  21. chopsueyboy March 10, 2011 7:45 am

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

Peter Kim is an excellent kicking coach. He helped our son in adding distance to his place kicking. Ray Guy’s kicking camp helped with accuracy. Great combination.

  22. papajoe2 March 10, 2011 7:49 am

I think playing in the CIT basketball tournament will be good for the team. Each game is a potential season ending game. They will learn how to win, when they must win, although against lesser talent (compared to the NCAAs), but good teams. Learn how to really, really concentrate on things like free throws, etc.. I’m not saying that they weren’t already playing that way, its just that the eye opening lost in the WAC tournament and getting another chance could make them more focused on what they need to do. Good luck basketbows!

  23. papajoe2 March 10, 2011 7:54 am

I remember Peter Kim kicking for UH. What an improvement from playing at UH to playing at Alabama. Oh, he was accurate at UH, but his kicks was like slow motion going over the goal posts. Lacking power. With learning how to kick with more power and accuracy, I’m sure he could teach any kicker to add to their arsenal. Go get ’em Peter!

  24. NYUH March 10, 2011 8:01 am

ST: Since we missed out on the LBs in Sunday’s edition, can you do something on them this week?

  25. gigi-hawaii March 10, 2011 8:05 am

Loved Ferd’s column today regarding Rolo and Mouse. Made me chuckle! Good read, Ferd!

My Phillie Girl wife would love to see the mighty Alex Green with the Eagles. Good luck to him!

  37. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 9:05 am

Anyone else think that if this is, indeed, the last go-around for K5 that it should have televised yesterday’s basketball games?

  38. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 9:06 am

Or anybody else think that if Portnoy is going to the tournament, he should have done the women’s game, too?

  39. RedZone March 10, 2011 9:07 am

Time for football and time to call in the mortgage. The sooner the better. Chemistry on O is important. If Miah is going to be a starter they need him to be on the field much sooner than later.

  40. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 9:08 am

    Re: Anniversary party.

Can’t have it in the SSC. It will be undergoing renovations this summer.

Heard they’re going to redo the Ed Wong Room, too. I guess that means UH can’t hiring (or firing) anybody this summer.

  41. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 9:11 am

How do you view next week’s collegeinsider.com tournament?

Is it a reward for the season?

Or a preview for next year.

If it’s the latter, how about using most of the younger guys?

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid March 10, 2011 9:17 am

A very special Happy Birthday to da man, Robbert Kekaula! Hope you’re havin a very good day! 🙂

A little of both. This was a very special group of seniors.

  44. Da Punchbowl Kid March 10, 2011 9:20 am

Actually that should read above: “I hope your having a pleasant day.” 😆

  45. al March 10, 2011 9:22 am

    cit tournament.

it is better to have played rather than not being invited at all.

  46. gigi-hawaii March 10, 2011 9:23 am

    ST,

when would be a good day for the 5th anniversary blog party? Isn’t July 23 when you started the WB? But, you might have to go to a WAC meeting around that time?

Just name a date and we will start the ball rolling. SteveM suggested the Disabled Veterans Center — I think he said it is located near Sand Island (?).

  47. Manoa Mist March 10, 2011 9:24 am

Is the collegeinsider.com tournament “higher” than the CIB tournament? Which is more prestigious, if any?

I never heard of these tournaments, and I’m a little uncomfortable paying to play for 100th place in the nation, if that.

But I suppose that’s why you suit up, to play hoops whenever and where ever against whomever. If it’s on tv, I’ll watch.

  48. al March 10, 2011 9:25 am

portland is no pushover. they beat idaho, boise st, nevada, uc-davis, and utah.

they need to play it as they would any other game. i believe that is how you must always play wheneve you hit the court. it is all business.

prospects for the last one or two scholarships will be watching.

  49. Bowwar March 10, 2011 9:27 am

I always felt Peter Kim should have been enlisted as a “volunteer” kicking coach for UH…It also wouldn’t have hurt to have Jason Elam stop by during Fall Camp to assist with our kickers.

  50. al March 10, 2011 9:31 am

mbb…next season begins with this tournament.

    remain focused.

    practice with intensity.

understand the game plan for portland.

    continue to hone your skills.

continue to work as a team.

know your role on the team and be prepared.

    know the game.

don’t do things in a game you are incapable of.

    practice so that you can.

don’t let the opponent out think you.

don’t let the opponent out smart you.

don’t let the opponent out hustle you.

don’t let the opponent out prepare you.

envision what you are going to do in any given situation and replay that in your mind’s eye over and over again.

    study hard, no grades…no court.

  51. al March 10, 2011 9:33 am

    isn’t it, “i hope you’re having a pleasant evening….”

Maybe some Had Don for dinner recently 🙂

  53. al March 10, 2011 9:38 am

bowar…if memory serves me right…i believe both peter “yummy’s” kim and jason elam have made the rounds in the past to help out every now and then.

  54. d1shima March 10, 2011 9:38 am

Coupla interesting things from JD on the BC (hoted by JP) show:

    – CIT bid is an “Aloha” for the Seniors, who have never been to post-season; and for the season-ticket holders and fans who bought in to the team early with a new HC;

    – 24-team field with all teams playing in Rd 1 and seeding of the remaining 12 determining hosts for Rd 2.

Q1- Does the expanded field (it was a 16-team tourney last year) extend the length of the tourney? If so, how does Mac and Rolo feel about that?

Q2- Should they win on Tuesday, does the anticipated the Friday date preclude Hawaii from being seeded in the top 4 after Rd1?

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid March 10, 2011 9:38 am

I wanted him to have a pleasant day all day since it’s his birthday.

Happy birthday to Laura (Chee) Pennington!

why does that name sound familiar?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY RK !!!

  67. LizKauai m/ March 10, 2011 10:25 am

    Yes, Happy Birthday RK!!!

And yes, I agree that it would have been great to have a TV crew on hand for the BB game yesterday. Hearing the band and the cheer was great, tho… but even moreso- that Instant Replay might have put things to right too…

    hiho!

  68. Enrique Aceret March 10, 2011 11:03 am

Your layout and coloring scheme of your theme is perfect! Plus I seriously appreciated this post… you kept me interested throughout the entire article. I hope you really don’t mind but I’m definitely going to share this will the many fans on my Twitter Page.

  69. LK March 10, 2011 11:05 am

    Happy Birthday RK,

Good luck Kenton, guess you won’t be at scout camp this weekend.

  70. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2011 11:10 am

Happy D-day to all B-day babies!

CIT definitely will help the B-ball team. Learn from the last game and execute what you learned. There many ways to win and lose a game. I’m satisfied with the way the season went. Predicted to be the bottom feeders to where we ended up has got to be a plus. The bar has been raised for next years Warriors/Bows.

The Odd Couple, Mouse and Rolo, Experienced and Fresh, a winning combination. I hope to see Mouse on the sidelines come September.

Mean schedule this weekend at Manoa. Going be GUUD!

  71. Kazz March 10, 2011 11:33 am

I enjoyed Jason Kaneshiro’s article today and I think all UH fans are very happy for Sarah Robinson.

In Kate’s last season, it was already reported her sister had signed to UH and would be coming in right as Kate left. I didn’t know much about her accolades at Moanalua back then, but they are impressive indeed and truth be told my excitement for the 2009 season was based around seeing what she could bring.

Of course, it was a period of waiting as mentioned before. The last few years has been a factor of “two”. It took Kate Robinson two years to bust out and she became and All-American and previously held the UH home run record. Then you had Taualii grasp 1st base after two years in the program and she really solidifed her leadership last season. Now Sarah joins the “two’fer club” and it’s her job to take it as far as she can.

When Sarah hit that homer off her sister during the alumnae game in the fall, maybe it was a passing of the torch? Well, a reluctant passing of the torch as Kate was NOT too pleased with that happening for several hundred to see. I think the bragging rights in the Robinson household are still being felt today, but it was kind of symbolic if you think about it.

  72. Old Diver March 10, 2011 11:37 am

Any discussion about whether the CIT tourney is worth it or not is from a fans point of view. From the players view they just want to play and win. They don’t care if it’s the XYZ tournament, they just love playing. It’s not a reward or preview, it’s something they love to do. That said with such a young team the extra practices before summer break has to welcomed by Coach Arnold.

  73. Michigan Warrior March 10, 2011 11:53 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Happy birthday to all da birthday people!

Happy to report that my Dad is progressing well, and that my brother’s surgery this morning went well. Mahalo to every one of you for the support you’ve shown throughout everything so far!

Wish we could meet more of you before leaving, (United, 12:30 pm, 15March) but time’s running out. Would like to make it to Manoa for at least one more game, but not sure if we’ll be able to do it with so many last minute requests of our time.

Still haven’t brought my son to the beach yet… raining too much!!!

If any of you still haven’t met us and want to, we’re usually at Pali Momi ICU (3rd floor waiting area) until 10:30pm. We may not be there between 7-9 pm, as this is when they change shifts, so we may be at the food court in Pearl Ridge, by the movie theaters. I’m always wearing a UH hat.

Again, my apologies for the limited participation. Love all you guys!

  74. hawaiiansun March 10, 2011 12:07 pm

Not many N-S runners have made it in Hawaii’s R&S O. We have had a couple, most notable the bruiser from SLHS JJ had in his inaugural season. To be sure, there have been others but even the oversized-one from the westside could deftly-cut at the LOS and find open space before lowering his shoulder and having his way with undersized DBs.

RBs in our O must slip, slide, cut on a dime to pick-up daylight or seams in our created by our OL spacing and blocking schemes, just to get going.

So, it will be intriguing to see Sterling Jackson work in our system. To be effective where he can utilize his strength-assests, he must first get to the seams….that’s it in a nutshell.

  75. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 12:17 pm

    Re: Mortgage.

I think the football Warriors are resigned to Ostrowski rejoining the team after spring break, giving him two weeks of practice. It probably would be better if he could join earlier, because the Warriors probably want to establish a starting lineup exiting spring practice. Yes, he will be in the mix, but as we learned last year, receiver chemistry is very important.

  76. hawaiiansun March 10, 2011 12:19 pm

WR coach Mouse Davis indicated in a Ferd Lewis article today he was not sure whether he would return for the fall.

“Davis, who lives on the mainland and will turn 79 when the season starts, said this will be his last spring coaching and he is undecided whether he will return in the fall”.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/ferdswords/20110310_

    Warriors_odd_couple_has_become_perfect_pair.html

    So, what goes?

The way UHAD runs its hiring, it takes time. Mouse will prolly announce after spring…..I guess???

Stuzz or Funaki to replace Mouse?

  77. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 12:20 pm

it’s going to be interesting to see how football/basketball handle Ostrowski the next two years. I mean, basketball essentially will have two teams: a pre-Miah team and a MIah team. How does that impact chemistry? How will the other point guards feel?

  78. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 12:20 pm

    Mouse is coming back.

    Take that to the bank.

  79. gigi-hawaii March 10, 2011 12:26 pm

    ST,

does Mouse find the job/hobby fun or stressful? Hope he has a strong heart.

  80. hawaiiansun March 10, 2011 12:29 pm

Miah will miss a max of 6 practices, if that. Actually, it works out well bc Rolo can have a better look at Bell at both slot sides and give other players an opportunity to audition at that position, including a taller prospective like Darius Bright.

Miah has 4 years of apprenticeship in the system and is ahead of most on the learning curve.

Timing w Moniz and other UH QBs can materialize in the unsupervised-summer sessions and camp.

  81. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2011 12:38 pm

    #78..ST…YES!

  82. hawaiiansun March 10, 2011 12:41 pm

Mouse is sounding more like a Wisconsin Democrat.

  83. d1shima March 10, 2011 12:41 pm

What does one do in Lake Oswego during CFB season?

  84. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 12:45 pm

    Gigi:

I think he finds it very enjoyable.

He was brought in to be a mentor, and he mentors very well.

In the run-and-shoot, a lot of the work is mental, and he and Rolo get the receivers to understand where they need to go and why.

But he doesn’t have to recruit much, he gets to spend most of the offseason on the Mainland. I’d say it’s a nice life.

  85. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2011 12:46 pm

Isn’t Lake Oswego supposed to be really nice? That’s where Mel deLaura has a house.

  86. Old Diver March 10, 2011 12:50 pm

    #78

ST are you saying as “al” would say a “done deal”?

  87. d1shima March 10, 2011 12:52 pm

    …there’s a Trader Joe’s there.

  88. d1shima March 10, 2011 12:54 pm

    …Clackamas Mall’s pretty close.

  89. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 10, 2011 1:07 pm

Although all sports wind up causing injuries which can have huge impacts on an athlete’s playing time, I would much rather see Miah playing basketball than football. If we lose him to a football injury in the fall, that will have a horrendous impact on the basketball team’s 2011-2012 outcome.

Yes, I know about the scholarship, but won’t the overseas basketball tour also impact the August football practice schedule? I don’t know the details about the team’s overseas travels other than it takes place during the summer months.

Anyone here know when it takes place?

  90. Bowwar March 10, 2011 1:09 pm

Lake Oswego is a very nice community North of Portland.

  91. Bowwar March 10, 2011 1:10 pm

    Ooops…South of Portland

  92. d1shima March 10, 2011 1:11 pm

    Are there 2 Lake Oswego’s?

  93. d1shima March 10, 2011 1:12 pm

    😆

  94. Bowwar March 10, 2011 1:15 pm

#53 – Al, you’re correct, but not on regular or ongoing basis. My understanding is that there was a problem back aways in having Peter act as a “volunteer” coach. It would be an asset for Elam to share his knowledge, as he is familiar with Tomey, a very successful kicker in the NFL, and someone who did BOTH place kicking and punting.

  95. mctruck March 10, 2011 1:20 pm

I think Miah O., should return to practice with the fb team…seeing how the bb season is basically, a wash. what’s the saying?, “moving-on.”

  96. hawaiiansun March 10, 2011 1:20 pm

miah has made it clear many times his priority is w football.

summer unsupervised sessions and camp are non-negotiable items for a football apprentice who has 4 years invested in the system and is on the brink of being named a starter.

as for gib’s program, he has shown he doesnt sit on his hands—most competent coaches dont.

  97. tommui March 10, 2011 2:30 pm

    Don Weir is 65 today?

    Happy birthday Don!

(Just kidding but I’m leaving town tomorrow just to be safe!)

  98. al March 10, 2011 2:59 pm

    old diver…yup a done deal.

  99. al March 10, 2011 3:02 pm

bowwar…they hardly come around these days.

i would hope that all the past football guys, especially those who had nfl stints would come by more often. show face, give talks, volunteer, and donate some coin. it would be a great show of appreciation on their part. it would help build a foundation of alumni who gave back somehow. don’t have to be financially, unless you made the big bucks, but, in other intangible efforts.

  112. Pauoa Boy March 10, 2011 4:02 pm

Nothing against Miah Ostrowski when I say this, but to me if Coach Gib is relying on Miah to be their point man next year with Hiram graduating, that’s kind of messed up to me. I mean Miah can ball as he’s proven he has the steady hand and can run the offense no doubt. Bobby Miles needs a lot of offseason work on his all around game to be effective, he’s not ready yet in my eyes to take on a larger role running the point. Gerry Blakes coming in is not necessarily a true point guard either. I think Coach should look at picking up that one JC point guard if possible or a no crap true point who has pass first mentality and takes care of the ball. Haven’t seen much of Pi’i Minns game to know if he’ll get signifcant minutes next year. Anyway, I think Miah’s future is in football and he could have a very productive year on the field moreso than the court!

  113. bb March 10, 2011 4:05 pm

I’ll even throw in a ticket to the baseball game. The seat is not the greatest but at least it would get you in.

Someone point him out and a ticket and warrior dog for you.

  114. Pauoa Boy March 10, 2011 4:08 pm

What I’m saying is that I think Miah should just focus on football more as he could have a better future as a pro later in that sport moreso than basketball. Granted he can ball and could probably play pro ball overseas but i think he could be as productive as Kealoha Pilares was…

  115. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2011 4:14 pm

Pauoa Boy, what a great situation to have! would luv to see Miah next year as All WAC selection in football and basketball! Might be a first!

Back from the Softball game. Somewhat disappointing. Lots of bench players had a chance to play—no regular starters in the lineup except Jenna— and show that they can hit. Unfortunately, few took advantage. UH won 1-0, with Jenna Rodriquez getting the shutout. Jocelyn Enrique did get a couple of dying quail hits. Lots of K’s for both teams. Was hoping for a breakout day for a potential 8th or 9th place batter.

what i am hearing is that if the tsunami hits hawaii, waves will be in the 3-4 meter range. it doesn’t sound big, but it is huge and will put a lot of people and property in danger. take care and take no chances. no need to niele, save yourself and family.

Thanks for your write-up. One other thing is the fact individual states have their particular laws of which affect property owners, which makes it quite hard for the the legislature to come up with a new set of guidelines concerning foreclosed on homeowners. The problem is that every state offers own regulations which may interact in a negative manner on the subject of foreclosure plans.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  235. rosetta stone software March 20, 2011 8:25 pm

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Banking is generally a highly regulated industry, and government restrictions on financial activities by banks have varied over time and location. The current set of global bank capital standards are called Basel II. In some countries such as Germany, banks have historically owned major stakes in industrial corporations while in other countries such as the United States banks are prohibited from owning non-financial companies. In Japan, banks are usually the nexus of a cross-share holding entity known as the keiretsu. In Iceland banks had very light regulation prior to the 2008 collapse.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I have seen that car insurance companies know the autos which are susceptible to accidents along with risks. Additionally , they know what style of cars are inclined to higher risk along with the higher risk they’ve the higher a premium amount. Understanding the very simple basics regarding car insurance will help you choose the right form of insurance policy which will take care of your needs in case you get involved in an accident. Appreciate your sharing your ideas with your blog.
