Warrior additions

From last week’s football walk-on tryouts, the following have been added to the Warriors’ roster (click on the highlighted names for videos):

• Salvatore Recca, defensive end, 6-2, 250, Kamehameha Schools

• Joshua Gist, defensive back, 6-, 190, Foothill High (S.C.)

Adam Hom, outside linebacker, 5-10, 225, Word of Life Academy

Guyson Amina, safety/slotback, 5-10, 175, Waianae High

Hans Reppuhn, slotback/defensive back, 5-11, 180, Castle High

• Kana Silva, slotback/returner, 5-9, 184, Kamehameha-Hawaii

• Kauakea Olds, defensive back, 5-11, 200, Castle High

• Mark Silverstein, wideout, 6-3, 185, Punahou School

Mina Gould, defensive back, 5-10, 160, Punahou

Sam Ohai, defensive tackle/center/guard, 6-3, 335, Central Lakes College (Minn.)

Notes: Silva is the younger brother of former UH safety Mana Silva. … Olds transferred from Oregon State. … Gould previously played at Temple. … Ohai tried out last year, too. At that time, he said he paid for school from money he earned as a Realtor. … Hom previously played at Lambuth College.

Strength coach Tommy Heffernan has taken over the Super Games, and that means goal-seeking competitions — weight-lifting, speed — will replace, say, dodgeball and no-rules basketball in the workouts leading to the March 9 opening of spring practice.

Today is the application deadline for the job as special teams coordinator vacated when Chris Tormey resigned two weeks ago to accept a position at Washington State. Word on the street is that one of the top contenders is a very familiar name in UH football history.

    Hmmmmm Coaches with UH Ties:
    – Jeff Ulbrich, ST coach with the Seahawks, played under Mack in ’99, wife is a local girl who’s mother is great friends with the McMackins

    – Keith Bhonapha, Boise St RB coach, played under Mack in ’99, worked with the DB’s and ST while a GA at Hawaii

    – Kim McCloud, DB and Defensive Recruiting Coordinator at Baylor. Previously coached DB’s at Nevada

    Good looking list of walk-ons.

    Stay dry erryboddy.

    HiHo…

  23. Garret February 10, 2011 6:47 am

Best wishes to all of the walk-on Warriors! Congratulations on making the team and I’ll be cheering for you to earn playing time and to get in the rotation, as that would put you on your way to a chance to earn a scholarship.

I know that the odds are against the walk-ons (this list doesn’t include the preferred walk-ons that have more of a chance to get the coaches attention), but 1 or 2 gems do emerge from the open tryouts at times.

  24. Garret February 10, 2011 6:49 am

Rivals listed their top 250 recruits for 2012. I did a quick scan and noticed at least 2 recruits from Hawaii:

    Punahou DE DeForest Buckner
    Punahou DE Luke Kaumatule

  26. gigi-hawaii February 10, 2011 7:05 am

    Good morning Tsaikos eveywhere.

a coach with UH history… you mean Rainbow Cliff? WHO CAN RECERUIT DA CREME AH LA?

  28. Buffoman February 10, 2011 7:16 am

Garret, I don’t want to sound like a downer but there a few things in your post that clearly state, “Not going to UH”. First, they got national recognition, second, they go to Punahou, third a former Punahou guy and pal are playing at a school with national recognition and this guy gets tons of national coverage.

Love to dream but the chances of UH even being mentioned as on of their top three choices of schools is remote at best. Our diamonds are unearthed with a bit more time and effort. Maybe that why we appreciate them so much.

  29. 808Fringe February 10, 2011 7:21 am

morning tsaikos! nice lookin list…given the history of our walkon program, there’s a diamond(s) in the ruff somewhere in there.

  35. Chee Hoo February 10, 2011 8:27 am

Referring to Garret’s list from Rivals, nice to see Hawaii is at least on the recruiting blip with a couple of the prospects. At least Mac is starting early and looking at high quality talent.

Davonte Neal – 5’10” 167 lb – WR out of Arizona (offered)

Lacy Westbrook – 6’5″ 300 llb – OL out of California

  36. UHalum67 February 10, 2011 8:48 am

Kim McCloud’s wife is from Hawai’i. Her family lives here. He grew up in Los Angeles and recruited So. Cal and Texas. He also graduated from UH so, in my opinion, a young, black, alumni coaching back at home is my choice.

  37. RedZone February 10, 2011 9:03 am

    Ho HO, Chee Hoo!

thanks for your #35 – GREAT NEWS!!! for years some Tsaikos have been posting for UH to begin “early offers” to recruits – we know that Coach Mack has offered up to 4 for 2012 or 2013!

An excellent 2011 may go a long way to get some high quality recruits away from the BCS schools.

  40. HawaiiMongoose February 10, 2011 9:06 am

I’m thinking Jeff Ulbrich could be the top contender ST is referring to. Unlike Kim McCloud or Keith Bhonapha, he’s “a very familiar name in UH football history”. He played extensively on special teams in the NFL, and because he spent last season as a special teams assistant with the Seahawks rather than as a special teams coach, the open position at UH would be a step up for him rather than a step down. Finally, he’s dedicated himself to a career in coaching and is prepared to move his family wherever that career may lead. Here’s an article about his retirement from the NFL in which he discusses his coaching aspirations:

    http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20091209/SPORTS/912099923/1010/SPORTS?p=1&tc=pg

I think Jeff could relate well to potential UH recruits and would be a great addition to Coach Mack’s staff.

  42. al February 10, 2011 9:12 am

that sounds more of “legendary” person of hawaii football’s past.

  43. al February 10, 2011 9:15 am

jeff ulbrich…well he did play for mack in 1999 didn’t he?

  44. Hoohiki February 10, 2011 9:16 am

I agree with UHalum67. I’m wondering if there was a more politically correct way to say I prefer someone with a great resume, has Hawaii ties, and…is an African-American. It’s almost like saying, on my math team, I want a talented person and… who is Chinese. I apologize if I’m offending anyone by contemplating this, but in this day and age, even if you mean no harm, people almost always construe it the wrong way. Again, I agree with the posts advocating for McCloud. I was just thinking….

  45. Stretch February 10, 2011 9:16 am

I think that Mack should consider picking up a black coach. You need someone who the black players can relate to. Having Lumpkin doesn’t count. We need someone on the field with the guys.

I would also prefer a “younger” coach. Most times, they are able to motivate the players. Example, Mouse is not going to be the rah rah guy who gets the team going, like how Tuioti does with the DLine guys.

Diversity among the coaches is key. I think the staff that Gib Arnold put together is a perfect example. He has coaches from all over the place and of all races.

  46. al February 10, 2011 9:18 am

very familiar names who would apply:

Just curious here, but did Hawaii make an offer to E.J. Galvez, La Miranda H.S. center, who Nevada snubbed a few days before the NLI day? It was reported that Hawaii was one of the schools who made an offer, but Galvez decided to accept an offer from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, DI-AA school, instead.

  69. Derek February 10, 2011 10:58 am

If you ask me, UH’s special teams have been pathetic for the last 5 or 6 years. At least since Chad Owens left. Special teams is the reason we have lost some critical games. You cannot underestimate the value of special teams play in terms of field position and in causing turnovers. We have lost special teams battles to Boise St. and Fresno St. consistently big time. Once upon a time, UH was noted to be a very good special teams unit. We have to start making our mark now that we are entering a new era with the Mountain West soon. We were poor in kickoff returns, punt retuns, and we were not agressive in trying to block kicks. All too often also, our kickoff coverage gave up big yardage and also our kicker kicked it out of bounds, leaving the opponents field position on the 40. What the hell is going on here? It’s pretty ridiculous.

The person that should be selected is the person that will do the best job. If I’m correct, the position that is posted is Asst Football coach. That means that Mack can reassign the staff to different areas. Am I wrong on this? Regardless, we need to greatly improve the special teams. We need to take advantage of the talents of guys like John Hardy-Tuliau.
Finding very good special teams players can make a good season, or even a great season.
We have the offense that can score, our defense is getting better. We need to get to the next level. The TaTonka and the Huskies are just around the bend.

I would go with Tomey. McKnight is out, gone to the CFL. McCloud? I’m not sold on him.
Ulbrich? He has a good job with the Seahawks. Don’t know if he even applied. Tomey can be a big help to McMackin also. Mack has 2 more years left on his contract. He might retire after that.

  70. tommui February 10, 2011 11:02 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

UH has gotten Punahou athletics before – Miah O being the latest.

I don’t know why the Punahou bashing still goes on – is it the old Roosevelt-Punahou paintbrush thing? Private school vs. public school?

Maybe there is this preconditioned notion that every Punahou students all go to Mainland schools and having this mind-set, the athletic department does not make a concerted effort to go after them.

(Of course one can argue that the coaches didn’t hit St Louis, Kam, Damien real hard either but that is another story).

  71. Slugger February 10, 2011 11:16 am

  75. Garret February 10, 2011 11:31 am

If you ask me, UH’s special teams have been pathetic for the last 5 or 6 years. At least since Chad Owens left.

There has been a big difference in special teams over the past years. Compare punt returns:

2010: #111, 5.1 punt return yards per game, 3.79 yards per return
2009: #89, 11.5 punt return yards per game, 6.52 yards per return
2008: #120, 4.4 punt return yards per game, 2.00 yards per return (#120 out of 120 D-IA teams)
2007: #20, 23.9 punt return yards per game, 12.44 yards per return

Top 20 in punt returns in 2007 is not “pathetic” for me.

    Compare kickoff returns:

    2010: #94, 20.16 yards per return
    2009: #45, 22.32 yards per return
    2008: #79, 20.45 yards per return
    2007: #12, 24.3 yards per return

Top 12 in kickoff returns is not “pathetic” for me.

Last season UH was #34 in opponent’s kickoff return yardage, but that might have been partially due to the short kickoffs. Still, last year UH gave up *0* kickoff returns for a TD.

Normally I wouldn’t have an issue with Tomey’s age, however looking at the overall composition of the UH coaching staff I’m not sure it’s prudent to bring in another hire in his 70s (Tomey will be 73 in June). With Mack, Mouse, Lee and Lumpkin all approaching or past retirement age, does it make sense to hire yet another coach that will only be on board for a couple more seasons?

  99. Garret February 10, 2011 1:06 pm

Cal’s AD said that there are discussions on *reducing* the number of BCS AQ conferences. This is a bad sign that the MWC could get AQ status…and the Big East and ACC are the lowest-ranked current AQ conferences so they must not like this type of discussion.

Sandy question #3: Any updates on building a Pac-12 television network like Texas just created?

Response: Texas built that, and is going to use that as leverage for whatever they decide to do about moving to another conference in the near future. The Pac-12 is working on a deal but we will honor our existing commitments to other networks while we work something out (she didn’t explicitly commit to it, but for all intents and purposes indicated we should look to having a Pac-12 network in place by the 2013 season).

Let’s also keep in mind that last year Salas was instructed to catch but not chance an injury in returning punts. For good reason, too. Look what happened to Pilares in the bowl game.

    madeinhawaii,

So, what you are saying is that the best that UH could do over the 3 years under the current coaching staff is to instruct their players in giving up the 20-30 yards of punt returns that other college teams get? You don’t have to use Salas or Pilares to return punts, but there is a reason why teams try to actually earn yardage on punt returns. That is the equivalent of 2 or more first downs that the offense does not need to get.

This is also saying that UH is giving up on scoring TDs on punts. I’m glad that Chad Owens was never given that type of instruction.

  102. Garret February 10, 2011 1:14 pm

Interesting change in stats for opponent punt returns. Because UH told Dunnachie to kick towards the sidelines (often the directional punt went out of bounds after a very short distance) in 2009, UH only had 9 punts returns over their 13 games. UH led the nation in opponent punt returns, 1.67 yards per return.

Last season opponents returns 16 punts over 14 games and UH was #114 in the country with opponents getting 14.31 yards per return.

Forego the newest models and keep driving the 12 year old cars; maybe not so many road trips with the teams; and mortgage the family home to the hilt!

There was nothing in the job description that said the new coach would be the Special Teams coordinator. Mack could still name someone already on staff as Special teams coach. The job announcement was pretty generic. Simply looking for a football coach with coaching and recruiting experience at the D1A Level. Naturally because Tormey was ST coach, we think the new coach will do what he did. Not necessarily.

And all political correctness aside, UH NEEDS A YOUNG BLACK COACH……or TWO. Let the PC police take that for what it’s worth, but for us not to have any young black coaches does not make a good statement to black families……especially if they come from black neighborhoods and schools. If you are not black, you probably won’t understand the depth of this. Put it this way — most schools that tab a lot of Hawaii players USUALLY have a Hawaii born or Hawaii connected coach on staff. Same thing.

You have raised my curiosity on the average yards gained on punt returns. I always though it was 5 to 6 yards. Anyway the main problem we had with special teams was not our punt returns but opposing team kick off returns. I am of the belief that special teams play is a reflection of the quality of your depth. Teams like USC have three, four and five stars players on their special teams. Fresno State also has very good special teams because they have better quality depth than us. Last year we had better first string players than Fresno, but overall Fresno has more talent than us. USC, Oregon, Alabama don’t run any different kickoff schemes than us, they have better athletes than us on special teams. Bottom line is we need to recruit better athletes. The coaches of course know this, and is why they spend so much time trying to get the best players they can to join the Warrior Football team.

#99 Garret, very interesting find. While I agree it would be better for UH if the MWC were invited into the AQ club, I have to admit I’d get a certain perverse pleasure from seeing the Big East and ACC get kicked out of the club. And maybe having more schools stuck outside the club would discredit it enough to get a playoff system going.

Having said that, is it possible that what the Cal AD means is that consolidation of the six AQ conferences into four 16-team superconferences is still under discussion? I thought that was on the back burner for now, given the Pac12’s failure to pull in Texas over the summer and the Big 10’s recent announcement that it doesn’t intend to expand any further.

    HawaiiMongoose,

I believe that Cal’s AD is on record as still hoping that they can get Texas and move to 16 teams with whatever other 3 teams Texas brings along (I’d guess Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M or Texas Tech if A&M would go to the SEC). Cal’s AD would like 16-team conferences for Pac-16, SEC, Big 10, and one other jumbo conference (probably what is left of the ACC, Big East, and Big 12 after they are picked apart).

Trouble for the Pac-12 is that they are talking about getting $15 mil per school for TV rights, with the number going to $20 mil if they can get Texas and any 3 other schools. But Texas will get $20 mil from the Big 12 and $15 mil from ESPN, so I don’t see how Texas will give up their network and $15 mil/year to go to the Pac-12. And if the Big 12 gets the TV deal they have been promised by ESPN, then every Big 12 school (even Kansas State and Iowa State) will make more from TV than USC, UCLA, Cal, Oregon, etc. If Iowa State can make more than USC from TV and can make extra from its local TV rights (the Pac-12 refuses to give any school their local TV rights), then none of schools in the Big 12 will go to the Pac-12 unless Texas leaves.

The sad things is that there are just far more TV sets in Texas and around the country that watch Texas games than the Pac-12 has aside from USC. That is why ESPN will give Texas $35 mil/year total for TV rights when the WAC, MWC, and C-USA *all together* gets less than that.

  124. Bulla February 10, 2011 4:19 pm

  125. Garret February 10, 2011 4:20 pm

In other words, it would be great for *Cal* if Texas made the Pac-16 possible, every Pac-12 school would get at least $5 mil per year more. That comes out to $60 mil or more per year for the Pac-12 teams. However, Texas would get $15 mil/year *less* and the other Big 12 teams would get $5 mil to $10 mil/year less. Why would Texas, Oklahoma (which is getting its own TV network) join the Pac-12?

  126. madeinhawaii February 10, 2011 4:22 pm

    Garret,

    RE#101.

Sorry stepped out to do some shopping and go for a walk.

I guess what that implies is that the coaching staff either didn’t have confidence in the hands of anyone else besides Henry, Salas, or Pilares for punt return duty insofar as last season went. Or no one acceptable volunteered. Like OldDiver also points out above… “lack of depth”. There should be more than enough ‘hands’ to go around this season, though.

  127. HawaiiMongoose February 10, 2011 4:33 pm

Garret, makes sense, that explains why there could be ADs talking about consolidation into four AQ conferences even though there’s little chance of it happening anytime soon. They just happen to be Pac12 ADs engaging in wishful thinking.

    madeinhawaii,

I’m talking about *3 years*, not just last season. The coaches didn’t have confidence in anyone over 3 years?

Lack of depth? In many categories, UH was last in the WAC. I studied the rosters of UH’s WAC opponents before their games last season and there are many schools that has less depth than UH (NMSU, Idaho, SJSU, etc.). Are you telling me that UH has less depth than the schools at the bottom of the WAC? If not, why are they able to return punts and UH cannot? Depth?

  133. Garret February 10, 2011 5:29 pm

Garret, makes sense, that explains why there could be ADs talking about consolidation into four AQ conferences even though there’s little chance of it happening anytime soon. They just happen to be Pac12 ADs engaging in wishful thinking.

    HawaiiMongoose,

The Pac-12 ADs would *love* an extra $5 mil or even $10 mil per year. But it isn’t going to happen unless they can convince Texas to take $15 mil per year less. When you consider that Texas’ Upper Campus is getting something like $10 mil of that money, convincing their academic side to give up that money so that Cal’s AD can balance his budget will be a hard well.

Similarly, any school (aside from Notre Dame or Texas) that the Big 10 adds will make each school take *less* TV money. There simply aren’t any schools that can bring in that much additional TV money to even pay their share, so the Big 10 will only expand beyond 12 school if their schools want less money…that isn’t going to happen!

I saw numerous reports that the SEC was told by CBS and ESPN that they would not get *any* extra money if they expanded. So, to want to expand they have to want *less* money per school. That isn’t going to happen! Don’t feel sorry for them, they got $3.1 bil over 15 years.

So, it makes NO SENSE for the SEC and Big 10 to expand and it makes NO SENSE for the Big 12 schools to join the Pac-12. All this talk about 16-team superconferences is nice in theory but if you follow the money it makes absolutely no sense.

Adding Texas would make the Pac-12 money, but it would cost Texas money. Adding UH to the Pac-12 would make UH money, but it would cost the Pac-12 at least $10 mil/year. If each Pac-12 school gets $15 mil in TV money and UH’s TV market is current worth about $3 mil per year, that means that every Pac-12 school has to give up $1 mil/year if they want to add UH. Utah and Colorado added nice TV markets and let the Pac-12 get a big $$$ title game, adding any other team doesn’t make sense if it doesn’t include Texas.

  134. Garret February 10, 2011 5:37 pm

This is just like how UH fans and fans of MWC schools react when the idea of SJSU joining the MWC is brought up. It would cost each MWC school money to add SJSU…it would be great for SJSU, but a hard sell to the ADs of the other schools unless that title game was worth enough to go to 12 teams.

Say that the MWC adds SJSU and Utah State to get that conference title game for football. Look at the teams that are left that the MWC could add–specifically Idaho, NMSU, La Tech. They wouldn’t be helping the MWC get a title game, so each of them that got added would result in *less* money for each school. So, the MWC would stop at 12 to maximize their money. Just like how the Big 10 and SEC will stop at 12.

Follow the money and you’ll see why that 16-team idea only makes sense if 12 schools decide that they want less money and will add 4 others. That is why talk of the Big 10 raiding the Big East doesn’t make sense…it would make each school get less, not more.

  135. tommui February 10, 2011 5:44 pm

To simplify Garret’s explanation, the ADs of the schools are saying: SHOW ME THE MONEY!

  136. madeinhawaii February 10, 2011 5:52 pm

    Garret…

Three years may not be enough to build the kind of depth that reaches the special teams levels.. especially if you previously depended on a select number to do it all and then two leave early for the draft… compound that to a new coaching staff that is assembled at the last minute with strengths and weaknesses that become apparent after each successive season. Depth of players and coaches. Some of your recruits may just be getting playing time field in the fourth year (grey, red, 1st, 2nd). Other key players might get injured or ill.. Bradley… Taylor… Pilares… etc… The RnS depends on so many receivers and repetition in routes that you wonder who you’d sacrifice from the list to catch and attempt a return on punts. This year’s seniors will only include Royce Pollard, Jett Jasper, Joe Avery, and Terence Bell with, I believe, Pollard being the only senior that started any games. Behind them we have Stutzman and Ostrowski… the rest look good in practice and on paper, but are unproven factors.. and were Freshmen or on the recruit list last season.

  137. Garret February 10, 2011 5:58 pm

    madeinhawaii,

So you *are* saying that UH doesn’t have the depth of NMSU and SJSU, even though those schools also had coaching overhauls with new head coaches also. I understand your point and I respect your opinion so I won’t argue this anymore.

  138. HawaiiMongoose February 10, 2011 6:01 pm

All of the information Garret cites above supports the notion that the current round of conference realignment is just about finished. The Big East says it wants to add one more school to get to 10, but otherwise the AQ conferences appear to be set. Moreover if the Big East gets to 10 by adding Villanova, then CUSA and the MWC will be set too, and the WAC won’t have to worry about losing any more schools.

  139. Garret February 10, 2011 6:01 pm

To simplify Garret’s explanation, the ADs of the schools are saying: SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Tom Mui is correct, but the other point I was making was that expanding to 16-team superconferences would make *less* money unless that expansion included teams willing to take less money. If that conclusion is true, then things are more stable at least for a little while…

Expansion probably *will* occur in a few years when the Big 12 negotiates their next TV deal and they look at major $$$ if they get a conference title game. Will they take independents like Notre Dame or BYU? Or will they take schools from other conferences and start a domino effect. The good thing is that they will add 2 teams at most so the effect will be relatively small.

  140. Garret February 10, 2011 6:04 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

The Big 12’s TV deal is up in 2016, which means that they will examine expansion in a few years. That conference title game makes so much money that I cannot imagine them not adding 2 schools. Waiting a few years to add 2 schools does 3 things:

    1. Gives them more time to recruit Notre Dame.

    2. Makes sure that they don’t need to share the exit fees from Colorado and Nebraska with any new school.

    3. Lets them expand when the economy is projected to be stronger, making their TV deal worth that much more.

  141. A-joe February 10, 2011 6:06 pm

somebody might be kinda small kine considering marriage.

    =)

  142. Garret February 10, 2011 6:07 pm

The interesting thing is that if Villanova moves up to D-IA in football and if Notre Dame joins the Big 12 (big if, but that would be $15 mil or more additional TV money for Notre Dame), then the Big East would have 10 football schools and 16 basketball schools. I think they would stop there since their football title game (if they add 2 schools) would probably not be worth sharing their basketball money with 2 other schools.

  143. Garret February 10, 2011 6:09 pm

If Notre Dame wanted to join the Big 10, the Big 10 would quickly say YES and would get a team from the Big East to make a nice round 14 schools.

  144. Garret February 10, 2011 6:10 pm

Strength coach Tommy Heffernan has taken over the Super Games, and that means goal-seeking competitions — weight-lifting, speed — will replace, say, dodgeball and no-rules basketball in the workouts leading to the March 9 opening of spring practice.

I like this a *lot* better than having the Warriors play dodgeball and other such things. Competitions related to preparing for the season, directed by Tommy Heffernan, seems like a great thing to me…this should pay off next season and in future seasons.

    Garret,

I don’t really know, maybe it’s their playbook, but I think NMSU and SJSU are less reluctant to play true freshman and red shirt freshman in skill positions. Contrarily, it seems that Coach Mack wants to give each player, especially in skill positions, as much time as possible to develop and learn the system before putting them on the field at all. True freshman players like JHT are rare under Coach Mack and Co. (It seems like every season we hear how the Coach wants to preserve a player’s red shirt status and how the players are first asked if they would give it up, rather than told.)

Since 2008, hasn’t every one of our punt returners that actually tried to return punts been injured?

Looking at the crowd tonight at the Wahine softball game, I’m proud that I was in a little way able to contribute to the Wahine booster club.

POMAI and KAZZ – congratulations on all the great work that you both have done! (Not to mention the host of others that have contributed)

I assume SJ has a bunch of photos to show off!

  161. Slugger February 10, 2011 9:35 pm

Lots of students in the stands tonight. Great to see that support from the other student-athletes.

Got to meet the Sr. Athletic Director of UC-Davis who will be at the MVB game tomorrow night. She hired Charlie Wade when she was at Pacific.

    GO WAHINE!!!

Sat with J-Rod’s dad who came over to watch the opening series, nice guy. Lot of parents here for the begining of the season. We need more Tsaikos to attend and make some noise.

  173. Kazz_DROID.X February 10, 2011 10:17 pm

Next thing you know these new bats will be under scrutiny as well.

Make no mistake, the players have a chip on their shoulders despite their lofty ranking.

My favorite moment of the night was seeing Jenna Rodriguez handling the “huddle” duties and keeping her teammates focused and pumped up. Its MORE than the homeruns. It always has been about MORE than the homeruns and individual accolades and attention.

Leadership and chemistry are the two things needed to succeed this season.

The talent is here, how they respond to all situations is key.

  181. Ralph February 10, 2011 11:17 pm

then Mililani better play solid defense, they should mark Pascua, deny her the ball and when she does collect it, they need to come at her hard.

Should be a well played game, close, but I hope it doesn’t go to a shoot out

  182. Ralph February 10, 2011 11:19 pm

Ralph ~ Rain or shine this weekend, this Wessai Chapta member will turn out in full battle gear to support our Wicked Wahine Warriors!

They were in control tonite, no doubt. Can’t wait to see more.

Note to Pomai, Kazz, SJ, myki, Ralph ‘n Slugger…Mahalo for your booster rocket. The team launched in a big way! Can we start passing the collection jug for each Homerun? A *Dollars for Dingers campaign thru the season would build some travel money for the post season.
