Recruiting weekend

All of the Warrior football coaches are back in town for this weekend’s recruiting trips.

Three prospects arrive today, another Sunday.

* * * * *

MIke D’Andrea, a motivational coach, is working with the Warrior volleyball team. D’Andrea used to work with the UH basketball team, and once co-authored a book with former UH coach Riley Wallace.

Happy birthday to Calvin from Kona.

    ST–

How are Mr. Dew and Mr. Muir settling in so far?

Wooohoooo top ten on a furlough Friday!

Is Cecil Doe in town yet?

  9. Old Diver January 14, 2011 8:57 am

    Garret, from the previous post.

    {SDSU may be a power in the MWC by the time UH joins next year. They had a $1.5 mil deficit (not as bad as UH’s $10+ mil, but SDSU was force to lay people off once they had a deficit), but Michigan is single-handedly eliminating their deficit.}

I recall you posting several months ago that the SDSU athletic department was being subsidized by the school to the tune of 8 or 9 million dollars a year. Is my memory correct? If so has the SDSU athletic paid back the money accumulated over the years or has the school written it off? Just looking for clarification.

Dew and Muir are doing well. I happen to know one of their professors.

  11. kev-1 January 14, 2011 9:10 am

Wait . . . what? Get rid of the moticvational guy. He is working with the volleyball team and they surprisingly lost. He was working with the basketball team, and they have been losing for years. Sorry, but I don’t think he’s much of a motivator. Nah . . . just kidding.

  12. Bowwar January 14, 2011 9:11 am

Wow…Top 25! Do we have an idea who the recruits are coming this weekend?

  13. BleedGreen808 January 14, 2011 9:14 am

    Thanks, ST!

Glad to hear that both had no trouble getting in at UH (academically) considering what happened last year or so with J. Willliams. Don’t forget to put in a good word for the both of them…j/k

  14. kev-1 January 14, 2011 9:20 am

    Props to Salas.

“WR Greg Salas, Hawaii: The Warriors looked terrible on offense, and Salas was the only player who seemed to show up. You have to give a nod to a guy who led all receivers during bowl season with 214 yards on 13 catches. He added two scores in a 62-35 loss to Tulsa in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.” – Adelson, ESPN

The potential No. 1 overall pick announced his decision Friday at his old high school, saying he didn’t make up his mind until that morning.

I’m not sure what the state regulations are on baseball bats either.

2011 starting out to be a bad year for UH sports. time to turn things around.

To every season. turn turn turn.

  33. gigi-hawaii January 14, 2011 10:43 am

    Hi ST and Tsaikos!

Too bad for the win-less teams! What’s causing this lousy spell?

Holding good thoughts for Chad Owens. Hope he makes the right decision.

  34. longboarder January 14, 2011 10:46 am

    Where’s blog clown Steve?

Is Mafua to blame for the volleyball loss last night?

Steve-O you need a ticket? I can even give you a parking pass. UH went 0-3 last night, which is quite depressing, hows about you show up sometime this weekend so I can get some S and G’s and you can make the rest of the crowd laugh during these tough times.

    Stay classy in 11′ bro!

  35. Derek January 14, 2011 10:47 am

UH hosting 4 recruits this weekend. By comparision, Stanford is hosting 20. And yet, Stanford has at least 20 verbal commitments already. It’s all about the haves and the have nots.

Good for Jennifer Carey. She was announced as an Assistant volleyball coach at California.

    My this weekends NFL picks.

Seattle/Chicago – sorry Seahawks this is going to end. They had their good game last week.

Bears are ready and rested. Game could be close if Cutler plays bad. If Cutler plays well, it is a blowout. Give the points.

Pittsburgh/Baltimore – tough game and will go down to the wire. But, I lean on two things.

One, defense: I think it’s pretty much a wash; Two, the QBs. Edge to Roethlisberger.

Pick – Pittsburgh by 3, meaning Baltimore take the points at +3 1/2.

Green Bay/Atlanta – Atlanta is tough at home and Ryan has been money in the 4th quarter.

But, I like the way the Packers are playing at the end of the season. Another close game, and this one will go down to the wire. Packers will take the lead in the 4th quarter and Ryan will drive the team down into field goal position to win it. Will the kicker make it? Who knows. If he makes it, Atlanta wins by 1 or 2. If he misses it, Packers win by 1 or 2. Either way, take the Packers and the points at + 2 1/2.

Jets/Patriots – All that trash-talking by the Jets. Bachi! I’ll take Brady over Sanchez anyday and Belichick over Ryan anyday. God watches everything. The karma is w/ the Patriots. New England easily by at least 2 touchdowns. N.E. – 8 1/2.

Basketball and volleyball is very painful to watch and will be a long season. I’m already waiting for softball and baseball. I’ll still watch and support the teams, but it is still painful.

    Cam Newton:

a repeat of the USC fiasco with Reggie Bush?

Auburn askes Rev Newton NOT to attend the game with Oregon. WHY, because they are NOT really satisfied with the initial NCAA investigation? He does and sits in a luxary box with ??????? some sources say an agent. Was the good Rev negotiating with the agent?

Did Cam know his father was doing this? Does it make a difference if Cam knew? His Mom was in the “stands” which means that father was somewhere in the stadium.

What is the NCAA position on parents who negotiate with an agent BEFORE son completes his eligibility?

    Just wondering!!!!!!!!!!

  41. Kazz January 14, 2011 11:04 am

Warrior Volleyball had ONE match where they implemented a new offensive approach, according to ST’s article yesterday.

Coach Wade got some convincing wins last season after games where we got outplayed. Who can forget those numerous times we split road games where we get swept one night and we sweep them the other night.

    NO WORRIES!

Try no panic either when the Wahine don’t hit 160 home runs in the opening weekend starting FEBRUARY 10th 😉

  42. NorthShoreFan January 14, 2011 11:05 am

imho…bball team needs to just play and not think too much…Coach Gib…let them play ball and have fun….improvise on the floor….no need to keep to the diagramed plays…

    Garret:

Looks like UH and Pres Greenwood is executing your idea of UH being the leader in bringing technology and business and “boku” $$$ to Hawaii.

If successful, this can elevate UH in the eyes of the PAC 12 for eventual membership? Part of overall strategy to upgrade UH?

Look at Section B, page 3 for article.

  44. Kazz January 14, 2011 11:08 am

    A-House,

All I know is that more innocent student-athletes will get punished eventually for the errors of one selfish individual.

I still BELIEVE the NCAA should look at the penalties and defer punishment to the institution FINANCIALLY.

I mean, sure you can take away Auburn’s National Title, like USC, but I mean really… who’s going to say, oh wait, Auburn never really won that game… UM… THEY DID. Same thing with taking away individual awards. It’s pointless and the bowl ban, I’m still on the fence about as again more innocent student-athletes will be punished.

Would it be harder to cite individuals responsible for neglagence?

If so, just hit the institution with a HEFTY fine. Instead of taking away USC’s 2004 National Title, FINE them the full amount of their BCS earnings instead for example.

  45. jm2375 January 14, 2011 11:09 am

Kazz – you missed last night when they were trying to chase us out of the arena after the match. They played “Happy Trails” after about 10 min. The whole group waiting around for the team to come out booed. It was hilarious.

  46. HawaiiMongoose January 14, 2011 11:12 am

Coming off a double-digit winning season and Top 25 BCS ranking prior to the bowl game, with the top passing offense in the country and with future membership in the MWC assured, I think UH is a step or two above being a “have not”. We may not sign many Pac-10 caliber recruits but the expectation should be to land one of our better recruiting classes in recent years. If that expectation isn’t met then something’s wrong in the quarry.

  47. Satch January 14, 2011 11:15 am

What a crock by the UH Athletic dept. to bring in a motivational speaker! and how much of an expense will that be added to the budget…as if it did any good…..look at the results…it seems both the men and women’s basketball teams regressed in their motivation to play the game…..and now the men’s volleyball team that was so highly regarded for this season……what an uninspiring and pathetic performance they displayed last nite…so much for the 2011 season…yeah…all you critics…you can criticize me all you want but the bottom line are the results….nothing more and nothing less….

Fair enough with regards to basketball, but Warrior Volleyball is HARDLY a lost cause.

It’s one match. It’s that simple. Nothing more to it and nothing less.

We used to do the same thing at men’s basketball years ago.

  53. Kazz January 14, 2011 11:32 am

RE: Warrior Volleyball’s opening night loss.

One loss on opening night doesn’t tell a story.

I remember one team in recent memory that was touted as an offensive powerhouse and faltered and lost 2-1 on their opening night. Everyone was off. Everyone looked at each other waiting for something good to happen. It looked bleak… for ONE night.

However, after producing several All-Americans, several WAC end of the year awards given out, a WAC regular season and WAC tournament championship, several individual WAC and UH records broken, an ESPY-nominated Super Regional moment, a WCWS appearance, and 158 home runs later…. the rest is Hawaii sports history. 😎

Save that question for those others that want to spin facts in their favor of gloom, doom, and hopelessness.

Now, if you pose this question a few months down the line, then I’d start looking for the M.R.E.’s and bomb shelters.

    Ecclesiastes 3:1

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

    A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

    A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

    A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

    A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

    A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

    A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

scripture made famous by a rock band, the byrds.

  57. papajoe2 January 14, 2011 11:39 am

I still can’t believe the 158 home run total last year. To think that the former record was 130 something. That means that no other team in the history of NCAA women’s softball came even close to 158. Wow, every time I think about it, it just amazes me. Do I expect them to beat the record this year? Not really, but I know they will get quite a few. I’m looking forward to watching this year’s team. Go Wahine!!!

  58. papajoe2 January 14, 2011 11:43 am

Thanks Ralph. Swimming and diving sounds good to me. I just found it hard to believe that we were shut out so far this year. Only 1 way to go and that’s up. Volleybows will get theirs this weekend and men and women bb too. Things will be looking up soon.

    Derek,

I remember seeing criticism of Stanford recently because they have been guilty of extending more scholarships than they have. Their coaching staff would simply call the recruits they wanted to discard and tell them that they didn’t meet the admission requirements.

  60. labrat January 14, 2011 12:24 pm

Time to turn the beat around.

  61. Josue Wald January 14, 2011 12:40 pm

Tobacco marketing is us smokeless turning into more and more restricted all over the world. Tobacco marketing is lorillard Tobbacco turning into more and more restricted all over the world. Tobacco industries say that the critics more than exaggerate the results of their advertising. They also stage out that teenage smoking can also be growing in nations exactly where most types of marketing have already been banned. Tobacco goods are dangerous. Don’t be concerned smokers, no one desires to lock you up.

  64. Garret January 14, 2011 1:52 pm

Many schools are bringing in their commits this weekend for their official recruiting visits. Stanford’s 20 recruits coming in this weekend most likely include a LOT of their current commits. 20 commits plus 20 recruits this weekend does *not* mean they are offering 40 scholarships. Before we condemn a school for overrecruiting, we should look into the real situation.

  65. Garret January 14, 2011 1:54 pm

I recall you posting several months ago that the SDSU athletic department was being subsidized by the school to the tune of 8 or 9 million dollars a year. Is my memory correct? If so has the SDSU athletic paid back the money accumulated over the years or has the school written it off? Just looking for clarification.

    OldDiver,

You remembered the subsidization, but not the source. SDSU is *not* borrowing money from their University’s Upper Campus…their student fee went from $2 million per year to $6 million per year to $10 million per year. So, their Athletic Department does not own $8 mil or $9 mil to their school, the money came from student fees.

  66. Garret January 14, 2011 1:55 pm

“own” should be “owe” in #65.

All of the Warrior football coaches are back in town for this weekend’s recruiting trips.

Three prospects arrive today, another Sunday.

That means that *none* of the football coaches are visiting mainland recruits now? They are all here for these 4 recruits? Interesting. That would seem to indicate that UH doesn’t have that many other recruits being targeted right now.

I hope that UH gets commits from the 4 recruits here this weekend…and that they stick with their commit if they do commit and do not take other recruiting visits after this weekend. I noticed that there are a lot of recruits that are officially commits to one school who are taking recruiting visits to other schools this weekend.

With 2 weekends for recruiting after this weekend, it will be interesting to see which commits stop taking visits and which recruits visit UH.

  68. Pride. January 14, 2011 2:00 pm

Below are numbers that I have comparing numbers of starters from each recruiting class against the number of recruits signed. A starter is someone who started for the Warriors at any time during their career for a majority of the year. The only exception would be the 2010 high school class where I used Sampson and Hardy-Tuliau as starters on special teams. The rest of the classes are from starters on either offense or defense. Please don’t get excited about the accuracy or inaccuracy of the numbers. Just trying to get a rough idea on our recruiting yield.

    Year/Starters/Recruits/ % Yield

    2005 13/21 62%

    2006 9/19 47%

    2007 6/21 29%

    2008 3/21 14%

    2009 5/30 17%

    2010 2/29 7%

    JC Transfers

    2005 0/2 0%

    2006 3/5 60%

    2007 4/7 57%

    2008 2/10 20%

    2009 4/9 44%

    2010 0/3 0%

    H.S. Recruits

    2005 13/19 68%

    2006 6/14 43%

    2007 2/14 14%

    2008 1/11 9%

    2009 1/21 5%

    2010 2/26 8%

  69. Pride. January 14, 2011 2:02 pm

I am aware that the more recent classes still have yet to get guys on the field. Their numbers will increase as the years go by.

  70. Garret January 14, 2011 2:13 pm

Houston’s Case Keenum has been granted his 6th year of eligibility, which means that he’s probably going to not just beat, but beat by a HUGE margin, the NCAA career records for total offense, passing yards, TDs, pass attempts, and completions. Timmy Chang will lose several of his records before next season is halfway over.

We should also note that he got the notice of his 6th year in *January*…Houston isn’t being forced to wait until right before Fall Camp (or even after the season begins, which happened to at least 1 recent UH player I can think of) to learn if Keenum is eligible. Knowing before signing day helps them adjust their recruiting priorities also.

  71. Pride. January 14, 2011 2:16 pm

Four recruits this weekend? Is the budget an issue here?

  72. Pride. January 14, 2011 2:17 pm

#70 – Interesting how quickly the eligibility issue was settled.

  73. Garret January 14, 2011 2:24 pm

In Keenum’s case, they are pointing to an injury in high school that made him redshirt in his first year at Houston (the TRUTH is that he never would have seem the field because Houston was set at QB with a player that was drafted by the NFL).

The appeal request came after Keenum suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Sept. 18 in a game vs. UCLA. Keenum also had a shoulder injury during his high school senior season, which prohibited him from participating in competition as a true freshman.

    http://www.uhcougars.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/011411aac.html

  74. Derek January 14, 2011 2:25 pm

What are our needs yet to fill the class. Do we need a QB? We already has 6 in the program. 2 upconing Seniors, 3 redshirt sophomores, and 1 redshirt freshman. I say we still need a couple of DBs, defensive linemen, pass rusher, a big time kick returner (maybe it’s Ellis “Island” Henderson) will fill this void. Still on the wings are Bryant, Onwuasor, Latu, Tigi Hill, Mamea, Parker, Sua-Passi. Also, maybe there will be a couple of preferred walk-ons like Santos. I read that Peni Vea verbally comitted to Idaho. Grayshirts are Lau, Anguay, Friel, Sellers, Eselu. Anybody else? We can use a guy like Mo Latu. Maybe he’s one of the guys visiting this weekend? What about Alo? I don’t see Kaai’s name so I guess he’s not considering Hawaii. Too bad. All I can say is that we have to get some local Division I players (FBS). Too bad we couldn’t get Jesse Williams. He’s going to the Crimson Tide. Roll Tide.

budget is def an issue. Big time schools can afford to visit guys they don’t plan on offering at all. Lot of times schools are in driving distance as well so makes everything cheaper. Flights in mainland are a lot cheaper too.

1 recruit who should be here this weekend according to Scout.com is OT Wes Schweitzer. I really hope we land this guy because he is a true Tackle, and lot of our O line commits are guards.

I bring up Houston partially because this NCAA decision will erase Tim Chang’s name from the top of the NCAA’s record books…but also because this shows that a team from C-USA can get quick answers from the NCAA when they get all paperwork in promptly and are organized.

It should be noted that Houston has *3* full-time compliance people while UH has 1. The speedy 6th-year decision for Houston and the slow process for UH really is not a coincidence…

NMSU has a tiny budget that has been cut severely…but they have 2 full-time people listed under their Compliance department and the Compliance department has a full-time secretary.

SJSU has a MUCH smaller Athletic Department budget than UH…but they have 2 full-time people listed for their compliance department.

    My playoff picks

Ravens at Steelers: It’s too bad these two teams will never be able to play eachother for the Super Bowl, because the games are always that type of caliber. This week will not be any different. Close, competetive game. – STEELERS WIN

Packers at Falcons: Althought the Packers were a wildcard entry, they are probably one of the hottest teams in the playoffs. That said, Matt Ryan takes a huge step in his growth as an NFL QB and leads a comeback to win it. – FALCONS WIN

Seahawks at Bears: The Bears should handle the Seahawks without any real challenge. But, Jay Cutler will remind everyone how inconsistent he is and why they didn’t want him in Denver. Jay Cutler blows it, Matt Hasselbeck has another solid performance, and the Seahawks squeak out another playoff victory. – SEAHAWKS WIN

Jets at Patriots: The Patriots will probably send the Jets home crying. However, I can’t stand Belichick’s smug, closed-off personality, and I think Tom Brady thinks his s_ _ t doesn’t stink. Plus he needs to cut his hair, because his face is not masculine enough to pull off that kind of hair. He looks like a girl. Here’s hoping the Jets make me happy.

    – JETS WIN

    Garret,

That *ALL* the coaches are in house this weekend seems odd to me. Especially when, as you point out, there are *FOUR* recruits visiting.

As I posted early this morning, SunGod was out “at the crack of dawn” on the road visiting recruits.

It would be interesting to know why the differences in approach.

Was this the method used to garner Top Recruiter Honors for the HC when he was in the Big XII?

    d1shima,

One thing that should be noted is that Mack was at Texas Tech before Texas started the whole early recruiting thing. Back then, schools brought in all of their recruits together for huge recruiting weekends in the final 3 weeks before NLI day. Now, schools in Texas have their recruiting classes basically filled 6 months before NLI day. Comparing recruiting between 2000 and 2010 is like comparing one of the first cellphones (a huge brick that had no data capabilities) with an iPhone or Android phone.

But even back then, Texas Tech would not have had all of the coaches present for 4 recruits visiting. However, it could be that the coaches are not on the mainland recruiting now because UH is recruiting local prospects this week. I note that ST didn’t say that the coaches were all in Hawaii for the visits for the 4 recruits…so, they could be out recruiting in Hawaii now.

ASA reports the passing of Khristin Kyollo of Princeton University, an 18 year who died of natural causes in her dorm. She graduated from High School in 2010 and she was a member of the Princeton Softball Team.

Condolences to her family, it’s way to young to pass on from natural causes, totally unexpected, so I hope the family had a chance to make a lot of memories with the 18 year old.

NCAA new softball rule that bats used cannot be more than 3 years old.

Hmmmmm, during the Na Wahine historic run to 158 HR last year, the most consistent and loud voice against Hawaii’s “yellow bats” was the Arizona HC. Did he have something to do with the change? How many other HCs complained? Is this the reason why the NCAA decide to ban bats over 3 yrs old?

OK, maybe I am overly sensitive, but it sure appears that the new rule was targeted only to Hawaii. How convenient!!!!!! Always take down UH!!

I surely wish that the Na Wahine break their HR record without the “yellow bats” so they can ram it down the Arizona coaches throat!!!!!!!! What a cry baby!!!!!!!!! Now, he no longer has the NCAA HR record!!!!!!

    Derek,

I think it was pointed out that two our our QBs will be seniors.. that leaves 4 in the wings. If David Graves moves to Slot.. that leaves 3. Moniz was #5 at the start of the season that he ended as the starter. Since the RnS era, many of our starters in the middle of the season were not the starters at the beginning of the Season. Then, adding a little precaution for injury and academics, going into the MWC conference, we will need at least 4 with 1 year under their belts.

Benson said additions could be announced as early as April 1.

While declining to name any football schools, Benson did say Seattle University, California State-Bakersfield and Utah Valley will be assessed as non-football members.

Multiple sources, one of which attended Friday’s meeting, told the Express-News recently the list of football candidates includes, but is not necessarily limited to, Louisiana-Lafayette, Lamar, Sam Houston State, California-Davis, Portland State and Cal Poly.

The sources also said the WAC could make fresh runs at Montana and North Texas, both of which turned down invitations last November. If Montana were to be approached again, one of the sources said, Montana State would likely be considered as well.

Looks like TCU is going to lose their co-offensive coordinator (the coach who has been calling their plays) to LSU.

BSU came close to losing its OL coach, but it appears that even though he was a finalist, Texas has chosen Auburn’s OL coach to be their new OL coach. That Auburn OL coach sure did a good job at Auburn, and he’s from Garland, TX and went to college at UTEP so he has Texas recruiting ties.

    SteveM,

Sad news for the Southern California cruise industry:

It is sad that the Carnival Cruise line is leaving San Diego…all of the decline in cruise ships leaving San Diego is a huge blow to San Diego’s economy:

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/13/san-diego-to-lose-yet-another-cruise-ship/

NCL and Royal Caribbean are moving their cruise ships out of Long Beach because of the drop in popularity of cruises to Mexico. Cruise travel was up overall last year, but the violence in Mexico has driven down the Southern California to Mexico cruises:

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-1014-mexico-cruise-ships-20110114,0,3995368.story

Garret — Well, there goes the $329 7-nt cruises from your back yard. 😐 Wasn’t aware of the Mexico problems but things might work out in time.

Ironic that the US ports are complaining of economic losses when the Jones Act was supposed to protect the US ships and economy. Now, it basically forces the cruise industry to go elsewhere once a foreign country stop is removed from the equation. More ironic since I think the U.S. has no flagged passenger cruise ships over 50,000 GT — except the lone Pride of America in Hawaii, where NCL is bleeding red ink. OK, I’ll stop now…

Won the ‘Best Seats in the House’ & had my bro sit w/ me for a set. Then jmxxxx came to sit w/ me behind the team bench. Tsaikos represented throughout the SSC. Tough loss, close sets. UCLA coaches were there watching the entire game we played against Penn St.

    Questions:

    – Did anyone see the UCLA-Ball State game? UCLA was called for illegal substitution, BSU was given a point, but UCLA was given the serve. Why?

    – Looked like Lofy was not suited up for the game Why?

    – Is Shane Welch really 6’10”? If so, then Jonas Umlauft must be 6’11” and not 6’9″ as listed?

One of the surprise teams of the season, Hawaii overcame a tough schedule and a slew of personnel changes to get the offense rolling to Warrior levels. While the season ended with a thud, losing badly to Tulsa in the Hawaii Bowl, and the 42-7 loss to Boise State was worse than it looked, the Warriors gave Nevada their only loss and won nine of their last ten regular season games.

Really interesting blog post. Your article is really interesting. I enjoyed this blog post. This article is great! I have to say that after continually reading terrible as in, same old material, little quality content, etc. blog posts on other sites, it’s nice to actually read something that has some thought put into it. It’s a pleasure to read well written blog posts, especially after continually seeing rehashed crap that writers and bloggers are putting out nowadays. It’s always nice when I come across content that actually has value, I’ve been seeing a ton of subpar writing attempts recently. Anyways, thanks again and I’ll check back frequently to see what else you have to offer. I’ll check back in the future to see what else you have up your sleeve. Keep up the terrific work! BTW, I like your site design, but your header image was only loading half way for me. P.S. Your header is messed up a bit in IE. The problem could be on my end but I thought you might want to look into that.
