Wet Wednesday

Ran into quarterback Bryant Moniz today. He was between classes, so he was heading to the football offices to study videos of past games:

En route to classes were wideouts Darius Bright and Royce Pollard:

It has been raining — hard — which means Warrior volleyball must be starting. I think it rained nearly every home match the past few years.

Then again, the volleyball season does fall partly during the winter months.

Then again, the sport is played indoors.

soccer1

Before yesterday’s practice, the Warriors warmed up by playing all-court, no-rules soccer. Opposite hitter Jonas Umlauft was the organizer.

And, yes, Umlauft pronounces his first name with a hard J, like, well, Jonas Brothers (although he seems to snarl when the comparison is mentioned).

Final BCS thoughts:

• If non-AQ schools are so frowned upon, why did Pittsburgh and Michigan hire coaches from non-AQ schools?

• So nice of TCU to finish No. 2 in the final polls — when being No. 2 really doesn’t matter. Every year, it seems, the loser of the championship game drops past No. 2. So how about this: Maybe the BCS bowls should pool the revenue, then distribute the money after the title game. The No. 1 team still would receive the most money. But a final No. 2, such as TCU, would be paid real runner-up money. And so forth.

• Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cam Newton really didn’t know about the bidding. And to prove that it was never about the money, he should pass up the NFL millions and return to Auburn for another season.

Whoops. Almost forgot. Avis selected Petey as the winner of the T-shirt. Text me at 256-0223.

    Hi ST and Tsaikos!

What would it take for UH to win the National Championship? I can dream, can’t I?

It was storming just an hour ago. Now, all is quiet. Maybe, I CAN make it to my writers club meeting today, after all…

  21. kev-1 January 12, 2011 7:55 am

If a kid goes into the draft this year, wouldn’t he miss any change to the types of contracts offered to unproven first year players? I thought I remember reading that this may be the last year when draft picks can expect the huge contracts coming out of the draft. There are likely to be changes made to the $$$ that rookies get paid compared to proven veteran players.

If that’s the case, guarantee he goes pro.

Then again, he could stay at Auburn because I am pretty sure he enjoys being carried from class to class on people’s shoulders.

The Cougars picked off Carson quarterback Justin Alo five times — three of which were returned all the way back for scores.”

    • If non-AQ schools are so frowned upon, why did Pittsburgh and Michigan hire coaches from non-AQ schools?

Because they got beat by them….non AQ just a moniker…Big Ten got their butts kicked this year and can’t play the “big sister” role to the non AQ schools….got the money? then buy your way to being competitive…after all it’s all about the money isin’t it?..with a few exceptions though.

The Michigan hire will be interesting to watch next year.

  60. Pride. January 12, 2011 10:56 am

So last year at this time, Chad Morris was the newly hired offensive coordinator at Tulsa. He was hired after having a stellar high school coaching career. Has a great season in 2010, ending with a great win over a high scoring, 25th ranked Hawaii football team. He is then hired by Clemson this past weekend to become their offensive coordinator. Two days later the University of Pittsburgh hires Tulsa head coach Todd Graham to be their head football coach. A day after that, Chad Morris’ name is put on a short list of possible candidates for the head coaching job at Tulsa. If Tulsa does happen to hire Morris, that would be a meteoric rise to being a head coach in college. A division one college head coaching job, wow. Guys like Norm Chow have been waiting 30 years for that opportunity.

I’d like us to have a reputation as a very physical, hard hitting team, who always in the top twenty five nationally against the run. Top twenty five nationally on total defense and scoring defense. 87. NorthShoreFan January 12, 2011 12:37 pm

If Auburn didn’t have Scam Newton and Mike Dyer, would they be in the BCS game and would the coach be …”all dat”?

I’m thinking does the coach make the team or do the players make the team?

A team in a conference goes 8-3 and they do not have the heralded 4-5* recruits. Lots of walk ons and “out of the mainstream” recruits.

The other team goes 10-1 with a bunch of 4-5* recruits.

Is it coaching or players who make the difference? Which coach is the better coach?

  88. NorthShoreFan January 12, 2011 12:38 pm

according to last reports…dano graves has offers from afa, sac st, and portland st. according to big brother david he is still undecided and is talks with many other schools. some want him as slotback or safety.

dano wants to prove that he can play qb. at 5’9″ many schools are staying away. but, i remember doug flutie having those same issues and so did eddie lebaron before him. look how far both got…nfl.

True but no 5’9″ QB’s in the NFL now. It’s also true that height can be measured but not the heart.

  93. NCAA January 12, 2011 1:02 pm

    Mr. NorthShoreFan,

Coaches can take a team so far, the rest is up to the players. Conversely, players can take a team so far, the rest is up to the coaches.

So who makes the team? Both do.

Good coaching can take mediocre players and make them good players, good players great.

Can great players make a mediocre coach great?

  98. NCAA January 12, 2011 1:13 pm

#97 Good coaching can make mediocre players play within the system thereby making the team good. Good coaching brings out the potential of a player, thereby making the player good or great.

Great players and athletes can make mediocre coaches look good. The coach will still be mediocre.

  99. al January 12, 2011 1:14 pm

    Things could be worse…

In a hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11:00 am, regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the super natural.

No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 11:00 AM Sunday, so a worldwide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11:00 AM all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits. Just when the clock struck 11:00, Pookie Johnson , the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner.

The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez Oil spill in Alaska was $80,000.00. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both.

al, something is very wrong with this picture. Dano Graves, 5’9″, not being recruited by UH as a qb. Moniz, 5’9″, starting qb for da warriors. If looking at stats and awards, Dano has the most credible credential than any of the present warrior qbs’ upon hs graduation.

The way I see it, if the local “top recruits” left for the upper 48 to ply their expertise, they’d probably have to work a bit harder to return for work (unless you’re a part of the USC, ND, Cal, Stanford system of connected folks and you have a talent they want, which also means doing well in school) in the islands.

They can do it, look at Rochne (sp?), Mr. Ane, Mr. Nicholson to name a few who went away. But I believe that for someone without that connection, who appeared before an employer who was an avid UH fan, all things being equal, I believe the person who went to UH would probably be hired no matter how well that athlete did on the field, away from home.

“Cam Newton really didn’t know about the bidding. And to prove that it was never about the money, he should pass up the NFL millions and return to Auburn for another season.”

Then why was Cam’s father was not there in two of most important event of his football life?

Missing Heisment Award in New York and BCS Final in Arizona?

His father will never let him. Cam Newton is going to the highest bidder.

Probably Cardinals, 49ers, Viking or Dolphins will pick a QB as need.

In the last 10 years 8 out of 10 were QB 1st overall Draft Picks.

I’m quite sure Newton won’t go as 1st QB as Heismen winner never are.

Can’t say never since Bradford did go 1st and won a Heismen year before.

  121. NCAA January 12, 2011 3:06 pm

  123. Kazz January 12, 2011 3:09 pm

    QBs…

Just a thought. In skimming over the QB issue over the past few weeks, I noticed there isn’t much talk or at least no one brings up the fact that we have been reminded over and over again that a QB in our offense, OUR offense, as much as the receivers, need constant reps as repetition = success with the run and shoot.

    So with that being said:

2008: They named Rausch as a starter, but didn’t play then went with Alexander for the Florida game. Then started Funaki for half of the home opener against Weber State and went with Graunke for the finish. Then we went up to Corvallis with Graunke who got hurt and Funaki came back in. Funaki played a few games, won us that road game in Fresno and went dual with Alexander again against Nevada. We stuck with Greg Alexander for the rest of the season and finished 7-7.

2009: Alexander starts and had a breakout game against Wazzu then got his career ended in Ruston. Shane Austin played a few and so did Rausch I think and enter Moniz. We continued with Bryant Moniz for the rest of 2009 and finished 6-7.

2010: Moniz played the entire season. Finished 10-4.

This doesn’t lie. Aside from Moniz missing all of spring, from the start of fall camp it was clear who our #1 was and he stayed healthy to keep playing and starting and getting the reps. We went 10-4 and got our old run and shoot stats back.

    The pattern is obvious.

Nevermind the non-sense about his receiving corps and singling Moniz out on this. FACT: Moniz had great #s because of Salas and Pilares, but GUESS WHAT? SO DID COLT. Brennan had Rivers, Bess, and Grice-Mullins for 3 years back to back.

The Hawaii Bowl showed me we weren’t prepared from a coaching standpoint MORE than anything individually wrong with our student-athletes.

As far as I am concerned from the facts about how our offensive system works to what has been shown in REAL LIFE, Moniz should be #1 and calling for anyone else sounds more like issues of bias. I don’t care if a back up QB throws a touchdown on his first pass in a real game in GARBAGE time or how one’s “potential” looks at practice when things are NOT at real game speed. FACT IS FACT. Games are won during… GAMES.

Yeah Moniz has a tendency to overshoot his targets and may not have the arm strength we clamor about, but if people think that reading defenses as a QB in the run and shoot is only compromised of receivers “getting open” and just tossing balls out there, then I dunno what else to say.

I’m sorry that some don’t like Moniz for whatever reason, but FACT is FACT. There can be no REAL evidence any other QB could have done better and LIKE-WISE there is NO evidence could have done worse.

Forgive me for recognizing we went 10-4 in the ONLY season under Coach Mack where the #1 QB was decided weeks before our first game of the year and it was Moniz.

    Eh what the hell… I’m 28 and I don’t know s— right?

  124. wafan January 12, 2011 3:12 pm

    NSF . . .

    Another situation that stinks.

Kid does little to nothing in class. Contact parents regularly because the policy is to communicate with parents with email, letters, phone calls. Just before the end of the semester parents claim you did nothing to help the kid and wants a review of lab and district policies. So, you end up doing extra work to defend yourself and policies while the administrators stand back because they are afraid of upset parents.

  125. kev-1 January 12, 2011 3:18 pm

NCAA . . . according to the broadcast crew, Cam Newtons father was not at the game, advised by the Auburn athletic department/admin not to attend. He apparently was watching the game from somewhere else. They showed his mother in the stands. No pops. When they talked about it, they pulled away from coverage of the game to show the commentaters discuss it, or maybe they were talking about it during halftime or something. But they did say that he was not in attendence.

For all we know, the truth is he was not watching the game from the stands like every other fan, but was in a luxury booth somewhere with the Auburn execs sipping on champagne and eating caviar off of truffle crusted crackers negotiating the terms of his deal to play for Auburn his senior year. CHA-CHING!!!!!

  126. Kazz_DROID.X January 12, 2011 3:19 pm

    Gigi,

Ive noticed that height stats for male student-athletes tends to list them about 2-3 inches taller than they actually are.

Whereas the listed heights for females tend to be accurate.

If Dano Graves is 5’9″, he might really be 5’7″ and Moniz might be 5’10”.

  127. kev-1 January 12, 2011 3:22 pm

kazz . . . I’m not suggesting that Moniz is not the best qb on the roster, but I won’t say that he is either. What if someone was really turning heads in practice and actually made people pay attention? Should that player not get his opportunity to shine, at least in the spring? Now, I’m not saying this is the case, but if there is someone that you think is better, they should get the shot, not Moniz. Keeping Moniz the starter in that case would be showing a little bit of bias, don’t you think?

  128. NCAA January 12, 2011 3:22 pm

Yes, Moniz is #1 unless someone beats him out during fall camp. We shall see how hard the incumbent works from spring through summer to keep his job and how hard the others work to take the job away.

  129. kev-1 January 12, 2011 3:22 pm

By the way, I agree with most of what you said, I’m just playing devil’s advocate.

  130. NCAA January 12, 2011 3:24 pm

    Mr. kev-1,

LOL, and after the game he came down from the luxury booth and met his son on the field.

  131. kev-1 January 12, 2011 3:25 pm

who knows how tall these recruits really are. I was looking at different boards on recruits and their heights fluctuate anywhere from 2-3 inches depending on the board yopu are checking. I don’t care if the qb is 5’2″ 120lbs, if he plays like he is 6’2″ 220lbs I want him.

  132. NCAA January 12, 2011 3:26 pm

    So Salas is really 5’11”?

  133. BigIslandkurt January 12, 2011 3:27 pm

I hope Cam Newton goes on to prove all the naysayers wrong.

  134. kev-1 January 12, 2011 3:28 pm

NCAA . . . WOW, I had no idea that happened. And after all that attention the broadcast crew gave to the issue. How embarrassing. Another example of the Newtons just doing whatever they want to do, regardless of what they are advised. If Auburn said the dad wasn’t going to go, then they must have been told that he wasn’t going by Cam himself. So he lied again.

  135. kev-1 January 12, 2011 3:29 pm

BIK . . . naysayers? I have never seen anyone say that Newton can’t ball. I think he is an extremely gifted athlete that comes around once in a great while. I just happen to think he is a liar and under poor guidance from his father, who just happens to be a minister.

  136. NCAA January 12, 2011 3:31 pm

    Mr. BigIslandkurt,

I don’t have a problem with Cam, it’s the father Cecil who has brought all this negativity to light. The investigations are still ongoing. It will be a big blow to Auburn University if all their awards are taken away because of one man’s greed.

  137. Pomai January 12, 2011 3:34 pm

#123 Kazz – That’s what spring ball is for, set you order for #1 on. I think all of the starters need to prove that they still are the best to keep their starting job, if they get beat out then maybe they were not the best. Only time will tell. It’s all a catch 22.

  138. NCAA January 12, 2011 3:34 pm

Okay, is that Moniz’s daughter’s backpack he’s wearing?

  139. Pomai January 12, 2011 3:37 pm

If Newton turns pro then Auburn needs to be striped of the NC, one of the conditions of him and the others being allowed to play in the NC was that they where to return for their senior year.

By the way, I agree with most of what you said, I’m just playing devil’s advocate.

Nah it’s fine. Just also want to point out that I wasn’t referring to any one specific post with regards to my post, but just in general.

It’s 50/50 by the way with giving other opportunities to “shine”. It’s a simple numbers game in any sport as this philosophy works out and can apply to all sports.

For sure this philosophy was never practiced with the old coach prior to Mack and the success of QBs like Chang and Brennan speak for themselves.

You play the “odds” game when you are a coach. I can imagine all coaches look at their “weapons” and play the odds game. With that being said, our current QB has the odds heavily in his favor.

Bias is BAD… depending on what kind it is. It would be next to impossible to prove that keeping Moniz as the #1 QB entering the spring is based on anything other than the fact that he started all of 2010 and finished with good stats. To me the only bias I would see evident is the bias towards what has been prove to work.

I still agree with “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Some people like me were and still are OBSESSED with how the season ended from a coaching and preparation standpoint. I never once placed the blame on our student-athletes.

Some targeted specific individual student-athletes and that’s their choice.

If we look at the body of work of 2010 our 4 losses had one big thing in common with the exception of one game with USC and maybe even Colorado. We were out schemed by the opposing coaching staff. I still believe we are comparable, athleticism-wise to Boise State for the most part and definitely comparable with Tulsa, but these games were won on the sideline, in the coaching booth, and in the film room.

Some people still cannot differentiate college teams from pro teams. In the pros you’ve got rosters filled with pro athletes that have the physical and mental gift to win games on their own shoulders. In college, people forget and take for granted how young these men and women are and how 97% of them still need that coaching figure to tell them how it is and to remind them that you are not as bad as you think you are when you lose and you are not as good as you think you are when you win.

Student-athletes regardless of skill still need guidance and direction especially from their coaches.

    It is what it is.

Im on the side of the fence that believes Moniz should be entered as #1 QB, but if someone makes some magic over the spring and fall and takes it from him then fine. This goes without saying.

I REFUSE to be on the side that the competition should be opened up completely as there is nothing to indicate that our returning starting QB is completely unable to be a starter again in 2011.

Life is not a freebie and life is not fair. The time lost from having open competitions in postions that have game proven players only sets us back.

If our coaches somehow find a balance then more power to them because you can ask any D1 coach out there in ANY SPORT, if they are willing to do the same in this similar situation. Coach Mack said it himself, “this ain’t peewee football”. It’s not. Not everyone will get a chance and that’s how it’s been, continues to be, and the winning teams with championships will agree.

I still think people have never gotten over Colt Brennan. I mean really, people havent. The same people were the ones proclaiming that there will never be another, but they never stopped to accept their own words when reality proves this.

I don’t know Moniz, he’s not my Facebook friend or whatever, he was just the guy that got us 10 wins and a crapload of yards and TDs simple as that and as someone that wants to see UH win, like EVERYBODY else, you’d have a hard time convincing me that the QB competion should be open to all considering what was done last season.

If our coaches prepared us well for the Hawaii Bowl then this wouldn’t be the issue it is today.

In December I think we all learned a bit more just how valuable training camps are. 15 allowed practices is NOT a lot.

If you have something that works, why WASTE time in gambling with the unproven.

It’s a crapshoot and we’ve played “chicken” before and it didn’t work. Something worked during fall camp last year the proof is in the record books.

I swear on the life of my parents and brother and all of my living immediate family members that when I say that I don’t care who the QB is for 2011, just as long as they can do the job… I MEAN IT. Hell, if it’s Corey Parades switching positions or Kolten Wong deciding he wants to play football instead and ends up throwing the ball around as our QB and we go to a bowl game and win it on national TV for the WORLD to see then so be it.

BEST OF LUCK TO OUR CHEERLEADERS!!!

    From:

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/1/12/CHEER_0112110709.aspx

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i cheerleading team travels to Orlando, Fla. this week to compete in the 2011 Universal Cheerleaders Association Collegiate National Championships, January 14-16 at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Milk House on the grounds of DisneyWorld. The Championship will be televised on ESPN in February.

Last year, the ‘Bows were a very young squad with 10 newcomers and just three returnees who had ever competed in nationals previously. Yet, they finished a strong eighth place in the 2010 Championships and laid a solid foundation for the future. Now, with a year of experience under their belts, the 2010-11 team is ready and poised to make a statement in Orlando. Hawai`i has been a perennial power over the past decade, always placing in the Top 10—finishing as high as third place in 2001 and ’05. UH’s trademark has been their innovative stunts and intricate, dynamic routines.

Saw their complete routine for the competition during the halftime of the Wahine basketball game on Saturday and if they can pull that off without errors, I can imagine it would be hard to beat.

  166. WWF January 12, 2011 5:02 pm

#123 Kazz . . . so maybe we should be developing our younger QB’s giving them as much reps with the young WR’s and slots during spring and fall practices so they can gel for 2012?

  168. Kazz January 12, 2011 5:25 pm

    WWF,

Valid point, but that’s where the preparation and planning from the coaches comes into play.

My whole point is about 2011, not 2012 and as judging by others comments over the past few weeks they are looking at 2011 only as well.

Considering who we lost this season on offense in the slots and on the line, do we sacrifice the season for 2012 and beyond or do we focus on the task at hand?

  169. Pauoa Boy January 12, 2011 5:40 pm

Kazz – No worry Moniz is the man for the #1 QB job next year unless something unfortunate happens. Nothing against the other QB’s on the roster but umm unless number 17 breaks his throwing arm bruddah is clear cut numero uno. Coach Rolo would be an idiot not to keep Mo number one. He’s had a full season an a half under his belt. He’s smart and can make plays plain and simple. He’s got the system down and could be in tune to break more records this season. Its not being biased, its a no-brainer. In order for Moniz to be unseated somebody better be named Peyton Manning, Drew Brees or Tom Brady cause umm not gonna happen. Its not being unfair to the other QB’s on the roster, as they will have their chance to prove themselves in training camp. But I garrans you Moniz is working just as hard if not harder to make his Senior season a memorable one.

  170. ai-eee-soos January 12, 2011 6:04 pm

    found this on cnnsi:

” …. Mike Johnson, the former offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, has agreed to be UCLA’s new offensive coordinator, with an announcement planned, which presents an interesting situation with current Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow… ”

    …. what’s next for Norm ?

  171. MasaBoy January 12, 2011 6:16 pm

    UH QB situation:

It was mentioned by St, I believe, that UHAD will begin soon to promote Moniz as a Heisman candidate.

If true, how would this make the “other” QBs feel – how will this affect their “off-season” training knowing that they will not get a fair shot at being #1 QB no matter how hard they train or how well they do in Spring Ball or even Fall Camp – will Rolo REALLY give each QB a fair shot at being #1? I don’t think so! Moniz is #1 no matter what he does during the off season, how well he does in Spring ball or fall camp.

  172. NorthShoreFan January 12, 2011 6:45 pm

Me thinks the coaches have a handle on things. Usually, going into spring ball there is a designated #1. Doesn’t mean that they will keep the job come summer/fall. You need benchmarks to shoot for. Designating position players allows for the ones vying to take the job a goal to strive for.

Has there been any sanctions laid out by the No Clue At All people on what happens if the agreements aren’t honored next year?…NO

It was a very touching ceremony this afternoon. Sending Healing Energy to those families. I was so angry about the loss of a 9 year old. President Obama did well to recognize her.

Masaboy, if UH does act on it, it will be a very interesting situation indeed as you stated.

How was Colt Brennan’s situation handled?

To me, promotions of this nature is counter productive. If an athlete has what it qakes to be a Heisman award winner, it will come and no amount of PR will change anything. Stats, production, character, integrity all count..supposedly.

    NSF . . .

Sorry had to take time to watch Jeopardy — one of my favorite programs.

Accountability is what is missing from the kids. The parents are not helping the situation by constantly hovering and bailing their kids out of problems the kids caused. The helicopter parents have already shown up at the universities. Several of my friends who teach at various post-secondary schools have rellated stories of parents who call to complain because the prof was holding to a standard of accountability. The “my kid was absent (for not real reason) so YOU have to make time in your schedule to provide additional tutoring”, or “why is my kid failing? He has missed only 10 days of classes” typically is the sniveling.

I sure hope the parents appreciate it when their kids move back in and mooch off of them.

The other issue is of administration bailing out on backing teachers. It is not as if I have a lot of free time on my hands with all of the required paperwork imposed by Every Child Left Behind. Heck, if administration will not back a teacher why be an administrator?

Many teams promote their players during the off season for the various positional awards. Players have to realize that if the person in front of them gets injured or cannot play for whatever reason then they have to step in and perform. Therefore, it behooves them to train and practice as if they are starters. To do less is detrimental to the team.

Chad Owens tried out for 4 NFL teams and is in talks with the Jets. However, the NFL labor problems and lack of guaranteed money might keep Owens in Toronto.

Richard Burnoski, agent for the 28-year-old Hawaiian, told the Star that after tryouts with four National Football League teams he is negotiating with the Jets. The other teams were the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Chad has told me that unless the upfront money is real strong, he’s staying here. . . . I still think there’s a good chance he’ll be an Argonaut for the rest of his career.”

The NFL’s agreement with players expires March 1 and there are indications that a lockout or strike could disrupt the 2011 season. Fearing a lost season, teams are reluctant to hand out guaranteed signing bonuses.

The NFL’s minimum salary sure is a lot higher than the CFL’s average salary.

The lure of a $325,000 U.S. minimum salary — compared with the CFL’s average $60,000 Canadian — still might entice players who are willing to take the chance.

To win a championship you have to have a great defense and an offense that doesn’t turn the ball over. Auburn slowed the Oregon running game just enough and stopped the Ducks on the 1 yard line at a critical juncture of the game. Both teams played hard and I thought it could have gone either way. Oregon’s defense also played very well.

In the NFL the two best defensive teams are playing each other this weekend, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. I would have to give the edge to Baltimore, however. But, Pittsburgh is at home and that is very big. I also like the Patriots to win big at home against the trash talking Jets. Chicago should get by Seattle as long as Cutler doesn’t turn the ball over a lot and I like Green Bay to beat the Falcons on the road. In the Conference Championships, I see Green Bay and the Patriots in the Super Bowl. The 2 hottest QBs right now are Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Hard to make a prediction for the Super Bowl just yet. Later.

  194. Garret January 12, 2011 9:07 pm

Non-AQ schools are *not* frowned on. They are looked at as the “minor leagues” that the AQ schools can get coaching talent and ideas. Tulsa and SDSU sure got raided after the season…and example of how the difference in budgets prevents non-AQ schools from building programs.

AQ conferences are not created equal either–the Big East and ACC are raided all the times for their coaches (and even their schools) by the Big 10, SEC, and Big 12.

The Pac-10 took Utah and they hire away top coaches like how Oregon State took Cav.

Money comes from TV markets and fan bases, which comes in large part due to population bases and tradition. The AQ schools own their TV markets and fan bases, so they generate money far beyond what the BCS bowls do and what the non-AQ conferences do.

The Pac-10 title game was sold to TV for $14.5 million. That is more than the MWC gets for the entire year from TV. That is more than 3x what the WAC has been getting for the entire year from TV.

I hope Chad Owens’ agent isn’t trying to play hard ball with the Jets. Its ubsurd to think that someone would give up the dream to play in the NFL to stay in the CFL. Given the opportunity, I can’t imagine Chad would stay in Canada. You know the money is going to be better in the NFL. Let’s hope this doesn’t backfire and the Jets say “what? nevermind, enjoy the CFL.”

Congratulations to BSU for getting a home-and-home deal with U-Dub. The big thing for me is that BSU got U-Dub to agree to a *significant* penalty if they cancel the game. I still remember how UH had tiny clauses in the past and got such little money when games were canceled.

I have learned that Washington will unveil renovated Husky Stadium on Sept. 7, 2013, against Boise State, the Northwest’s biggest non-conference attraction.

To show that Sarkisian and UW Athletic Director Scott Woodward are taking on all comers, in all venues, during this resurgence of Husky football, Washington’s game on the Broncos’ blue turf includes a whopping, $1 million penalty if the Dawgs back out of the return match.

    http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/011211aaa.html

  219. Garret January 13, 2011 5:07 am

I don’t like how the article puts BSU in the “A” category and UH in the “B” category:

The “B’s” are FBS-level teams Washington will host and should beat. But in 2012 that is Nevada, which just went 13-1 and beat Boise State, California and Boston College for its best season ever. The Wolf Pack signed a $425,000 contract to come to Qwest Field for UW’s second game in ’12.

Hawaii is in the “B” category, too, in 2011, ’14 and ’15 – though UW is playing at Hawaii in 2015. That road opener should help recruiting for the Huskies. They had nine Hawaiians on their roster this past season.

And Hawaii just went 10-3 and to another bowl this season.

There is no question: Moniz is #l QB. What UH needs is good back-up QBs. Colt had Tyler Graunke and Unoki Funaki. Timmy Chang had Funaki. The team did not miss a beat when the back-up QBs were in the game. Who does Moniz have? Brent Rausch? He was a big drop from Moniz. Shane Austin? Austin had one good game during his freshman year. He hardly played the past season because Moniz is a workhorse and had a spectacular season. Besides that, Shane was #3 QB after Rausch. He was rusty when he did get in a game due to lack of playing time. In other words, this season, UH had only one QB so to speak: Moniz. When he was on, A-OK. When he was off, DISASTER!, especially during the big games. Moniz cannot take the entire blame for the losses because both offensive and defensive lines did not show up for the big games.

The point of the whole matter is the Warriors need good back-up QBs to rise to the next higher level in collegiate football. Hope the coaches play the back-up QBs more next season. They are insurance that going keep the team on top.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I attempted to submit a remark earlier, however it hasn’t shown up. I believe the spam filter may be broken

  420. Hipolito M. Wiseman February 2, 2011 6:57 pm

  421. Andrew A. Sailer February 2, 2011 7:02 pm

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
