Merry Christmas

Yep, that was rough.

Another season-ending loss on national television. It likely will cost the Warriors their national ranking, and stall momentum going into a long offseason.

And that’s too bad, considering it was an otherwise good year. Ten victories. Record-setting performances from Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares and Alex Green. And when it’s all over, Bryant Moniz still should be the leader in total offense.

The schedule looks favorable for next season, with the two biggest obstacles — Washington and Nevada — needing to replace four-year-starting quarterbacks.

The Warriors again will play seven home games, although four of their seven WAC games will be on the road.

The Warriors will have to replace three starting receivers, five key offensive linemen, two running backs, both starting defensive ends, four defensive backs, and a placekicker.

This offseason, the checklist includes:

• Retaining Mouse Davis as receivers coach and sounding board for offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich.

• Landing an impact cornerback and pass-rusher in the recruiting class. The number of available scholarships floating around is 16. Could be more.

• Improving the status checks. Having three key players being ruled ineligible for the bowl game is way too much.

Ipu Man wins the contest. Al will make the presentation at the gathering Tuesday.

Happy birthday to SteveM and Chawan Cut.

Looking forward to next season with optimism.

Three players ineligible? Three “key” players? Gotta emphasize that a post-season bowl is a game after the semester is over. Need to pass the semester and academic requirements to play in a bowl.

More difficult when the Hawaii Bowl is the week after UH finals. But we knew we were going bowling at the end of October.

Getting bleary-eyed. Goodnight or Good Morning for the kids– it’s Christmas!

  10. cheepono December 25, 2010 4:56 am

btw, does mack ask the media to *not* report when the kids don’t make the grades to play in the bowl game or is that some sort of mutual understanding with the university and hawaii’s media? granted everyone can put 2 and 2 together, and hawaii is unique, we have the aloha spirit, respect, class, blah blah blah, but when it comes to big time football and you have starters ruled ineligible due to grades, it makes the headlines. guess we ain’t there yet.

mack cancelled all those practices for the sake of “taking care of academics” and yet we still had how many academic casualties? i don’t get it.

ok had to get that off my chest. one snap clear.

here’s to hopin we have a great offseason and come back with a vengeance in 2011!

The Blues really kicked in overnight after the game, but is so irrelevant when this day comes around. This Warrior team, along with fans is the true Ohana that this great nation should grasp and emulate.

On this Christmas Day, let’s be thankful that we live in a country known for striving to embody the values of faith that overcomes doubt, hope conquers despair, and love triumphs over hate. Let’s be grateful for the brave men and women in uniform who have fought to defend our values and who may be spending this Christmas far from home.

    agree with you 100%.

Happy Birthday Mr. Donovan. I know you’ve already made a decision, and you gotta

keep your word. at the same time, my suggesstion is that you communicate the

following information to Coach. the team lost. the team includes the coaches.

Mr. McMackin cares too much about how we perceive him. Two of his coaches let him down in the roles that they played this year. I know he doesn’t want to let anyone go. Looking at who he’s kept around him, the most glaring deficiancy is the speeders in the defensive backfield.

our speeders matched Tulsa’s speeders most of the time, except we didn’t match up speeder for speeder.

looking at Pride’s list of wins, and losses, from last night, left me frusstrated.

but I have hope. I have hope because Jim Donovan has shown me hope. He has made big calls this year. He’s backin McMackin, so am I. just frustrated, is all.

last night, about in the third quarter, i left my seat to go buy a Margarita. was feelin da need for medication i was soo depressed…

was seated right next to da Warriors tunnel., D Orange. anyway, i walked back up and then headed ewa on the concourse. above makai sidelines, and as I got to the gap area where you could look down and see the field, i heard a few (3) Polys, two VERY big Polys, watch Tulsa qb throw the ball, and the ball was caught and the receiver ran it in for a 50 yard toucdhdown, more or lesss.

what got me was one of the Polys was tellin another Poly “look look, he going score…” and his statement was accompanied by a laugh.

but had 3 of them, so punching him woulda been a life threatenin eventfo me.

I feel your pain coach Mack. but how you gonna recruit speedy speedy dbs outta da LA projects? yor coaches no moa da outsie color to match an be relevant, no mo dat natral communication faktah.

you need a young black coach who is a communicatah wit da city kids.

and, you gotta recruit da kids wit leadership qualities. not just any leader. DAH leader!

    somebody to take charge.

and one more thing. go recruit the male UH cheerleaders. those buggaz are in shape.

    those buggaz are athlete.

and one last thing. M. Ostroskowski. That was a fantastic reception. I was thinking… and the braddaz gonna let this Warrior go play basketball? what is coach thinking? How come they neva use him more all year long?

Hawaii is the only place where a Head Coach of any sport does not have to win a big game and still continue being the Head Coach. Any other University on the continent, and he would be let go. It just shows Hawaii fans just do not really want to win the big ones.”

Just wanted to remind Steve that of all the teams that qualified to play in bowl games half of them will lose on national TV. Steve are you expecting that half of the best teams in the country will we firing their coaches after they lose? Ok. Now we got that out of the way, AUWE!

Two hours of sleep last night, a headache and a stomach ache this morning and I know it’s not physical.

Our student-athletes robbed of a complete holiday weekend because we were ultimately out-coached.

    Unacceptable.

There are not enough lumps of coals to go around. I think Santa might have taken SEVERAL trips to the same houses in East Oahu last night. Even Santa was INCONVIENENCED.

    -2010 WAC baseball championship.

-Invites to the MWC and BWC to secure our future in athletics.

  61. RupertDaStupert December 25, 2010 8:21 am

We’ve lost the last 3 post season bowl games. Georgia and Notre Dame was not surprising. But this loss against Tulsa exposed our weaknesses. I always knew Bryant Moniz was not an accurate passer. I’ve said it many times in this blog. Colt Brennan could thread the needle with accurate passes when his receivers could barely make separation from the defenders. But Moniz cannot. Either his receivers are open or if not, he overthrows or misses his target. Or interception. The run and shoot not only predicates that the receivers don’t have the ‘dropsies’ but the qb is accurate. Bryant Moniz is a fine qb don’t get me wrong. I am a fan of his but it is what it is. Either his receivers get separation or his passes won’t get there. There’s always next year. The defense played well in the 1st half but mysteriously disappeared in the 2nd. We’ve lost our top 25 rankings and stunk up on national television again. Probably lost some potential recruits who saw that game. It is only a game. Always next year. Better Hopes, better times for 2011. Happy HOLIDAYS

  62. Kazz December 25, 2010 8:32 am

If an announcement is made that Coach Mack was given an extension this early on, it will turn off a lot of season ticket holders.

I am NOT speaking for myself, but I cannot control what thousands of others may do.

  63. Garret December 25, 2010 8:45 am

  67. LizKauai -iPad December 25, 2010 9:28 am

    Merry Christmas!

    Mahalo, Ke Akua!

What blessings we have had this past year.

How we feel today about the Warriors… whom we profess to love… is a measure of our own serenity (as in serenity prayer).

When we Love, we must expect Pain…because being “in love” needs pain to move us forward into the conditions of Knowledge and Unity. There are more stages of maturation after Unity but that is the one we seem to be challenged by now.

It’s all good. We are making progress. The Warriors have a coaching staff that can deliver a solid, sustainable, football program for UH by teaching and mentoring coaches and students… Let us not be short-sighted in this.

On the list of goals for next season, perhaps they will add a Bowl Win. Will the players be up for it? Will they be able to take care of business in the classroom and manage their personal conduct and keep their focus on what is best for the team before their own selves?

    I hope so.

This year was a HUGE step in the right direction.

Next year can be evem bigger and better.

That’s how I feel about it, anyway.

Love is the power. Fear is the absence of love. Anger is a sign of fear.

Proud of you for last night, bhf2, btw.

    And Mrs. Bhf2.

    Proud of our Warriors, all!

    Cheepono,

Schools have to adhere to FERPA rules re: releasing grade information without a release by the student. It’s a privacy thing. So, I can see why that information is not given if the 3 players held out from the game didn’t qualify academically to play. Closer monitoring of academic progress could possibly be a key, but grades from a final could crash a GPA.

I’m a denial guy when it comes to UH’s budget woes.

The athletic department “borrowed” from UH to pay off the $10 million accumulated deficit. So, it’s not like HECO or Panda Travel is owed any money. So, no, nobody will be coming to break anybody’s legs over owed money. And since UH has an open checkbook when it comes to travel subsidies, it might as well do what it takes to keep the coordinators.

    Merry Christmas, everyone!

    Happy birthday, Chawan_cut!

Happy birthday, SteveM! (yeah, I know I wished you happy birthday on Facebook, but this one is more fun!)

GmaHoney… check your email! (Or, would you rather I Facebook you?) If you got my new digits, then no problem. See you soon! It’s actually warming up a bit!

#21… Kris… I know we were missing one of our top Receivers (and I’m not talking about Pilares)… and the whole left side of our O-Line weren’t regular starters… First and foremost, gotta take care of the grades!!!

I hope potential recruits know and see that we are losing lots of key players, and that they may possibly be starters next season with hard work from now, through spring and summer. These possible new players could be the difference makers we need. Show us what you got!!!

My unofficial take/opinion on Hawaii bowl.

    1) gottasah give credit to Tulsa’s coaches who prepared well for the entire game and their palyers for executing so well – it really hurt the players and die hard fans.

    2) Hawaii’s coaches could have done a much better job in preparing the team – just like Colorado and Boise St!

    3) 3 ineligible players who were not suited up – very obvious when you scour the sidelines to see the missing numbers!

    4) this game and others – is it my imagination that Hawaii special teams players are not fast enough to get down field on kickoff and punt returns allowing extra yardage for the return man? yesterday/night and previous games, notice how Hawaii had to “fair catch” nearly 100% of punts cause they were surrounded by oponents? don’t they “block to slow down” other players? are the players not executing their blocking assingments?

    5) Moniz’s inaccuracy in most first quarters finally came to bite him with all the interceptions – yes, not all his fault as the Oline failed to block out the rushing Dline, but, he IS the QB.

    6) not ashamed to say that I mentioned to Shane Austin at the “after game” taile gate that I hoped he really works hard in the off-season and come back to take the job away from Moniz – Moniz must also work harder to keep his starting position!

    OK, ONE SNAP AND CLEAR!!

Now, let’s secure commitments from the “local boys”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  96. Dennis Halloran December 25, 2010 10:27 am

Lou Holtz was right. You gotta win your bowl game or you have an overall bad taste for a long time

Great year but funny taste in my mouth

another Bud Light should fix that

Watching the rockettes now that is a team!

  97. whitey December 25, 2010 10:27 am

First, Merry Christmas to all of you and hope this day is a festive one for all.

  98. A-House December 25, 2010 10:33 am

If UH is Hawaii Bowl eligible in 2011, hope their opponent is Tulsa!!!!!

    joining d1 – UH 50 Colorado 19

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  99. Stephen Tsai December 25, 2010 10:33 am

Losing Pilares wsa huge because he and Salas run two-man games. On the pick in the end zone, one of the receivers ran the wrong way. I think if UH had a few practices to prepare for the changes, things would be different But to have to adjust right before the first possession is tough.

  100. whitey December 25, 2010 10:35 am

Da Warrior’s D did a very good job irregardless of what people may think. Their breakdown occured because the O did not do their job. Many things, both negative and positives, could be seen during the game, but some things neva change, SALAS is da man, Enos was good, the D is improving on the positive, but the inability to make changes during the game is a low point.

  101. whitey December 25, 2010 10:39 am

My congratulations to Coach Mc, his staff, and team for making this past season a most enjoyable one and generating interest back into da warrior program. Merry Christmas!!!!

  102. tommui December 25, 2010 10:41 am

Happy Birthday to SteveM and ChawanCut!

Many happy returns – specially tomorrow at the Shopping Centers!

  103. whitey December 25, 2010 10:43 am

Looking forward, the recruiting class should be very good irregardless of this loss. In spring practice, there will be a need to give all of the qb’s who will play in 2011 a shot. We need these qb’s cause our O line will be much taller and bigger and not being able to see over them will be a huge minus.

  104. whitey December 25, 2010 10:45 am

ST, losing any starter can hurt a team, but this is one part of what i am saying about the inability of the coaches to make changes during the game.

  105. jeezy33 December 25, 2010 10:45 am

Al, ST mentioned we lose 5 olineman. Does that mean Austin Hansen isn’t coming back?

That could be a huge loss.

  106. Kris December 25, 2010 10:46 am

Thanks for the info “Michigan Warrior!” That is what I suspected. Happy holidays!

  107. justin December 25, 2010 10:47 am

The loss of Pilares and the two o-line starters does not give Moniz an excuse to throw picks right to the defender.

I truly hope Mack opens up the QB comp in the spring to humble Moniz and provide extra incentive to always be at the top of his game.

Additionally, Moniz was apparently LAUGHING on the sidelines during the game after throw several of those picks. Can anyone confirm? Not exactly the type of behavior you want your starting QB and team leader to exhibit.

  108. whitey December 25, 2010 10:50 am

In today’s game of football, the inability of the qb to get rid of the ball in 3 seconds usually ends up in negative results. That is just my personal observation.

  109. whitey December 25, 2010 10:53 am

i truly hope the wr/te from ohio signs on. da warriors will then have a big slot man who can block and catch and not too mention that he is pretty fast.

  110. jeezy33 December 25, 2010 10:55 am

    109. I dont think he is a WR though. DE all the way in my opinion.

The WR that can be like Titus Young for us would be Patrick Onwuasor. I pray we have a shot

  111. whitey December 25, 2010 10:56 am

for most of us, game is over, but for the coaches, they going have to review the game, then they going get graded, and like previously mentioned, there could be changes in coaching assignments or dismissals.

  114. willie December 25, 2010 11:19 am

Still don’t get exposing Pilares to that injury, despite trying to get him a look to expand his next level opportunities. He did not return much of anything all season, one game returning punts is not going to pad his ledger. Said it yesterday, saying it again that him getting hurt was the key to offense challenges. Just look at the Boise game without him. With him & Salas it’s the dynamic duo. Yesterday they only had the Dynamic and #1 could not do it himself.

Then you see what ST mentions about how they compliment each other. Big, big special teams mistake made to put Pilares back there. Feel really bad about his injury. But the guy is a trooper just reading his comments this morning. Wishing him all the best, he was one of my favorites for the past 4 years. That was an unreal haircut Kealoha!

  115. jeezy33 December 25, 2010 11:20 am

What I dont get is why Austin leads Hawaii to our 1st TD drive of the game, makes 1 mistake and gets benched.

While Moniz can go out there and look bad all game but gets more chances.

I would think if Austin had a whole season as a starter he could be a very good QB

  116. haawarrior December 25, 2010 11:20 am

Why would UH boo Tulsa at the Sheraton Bowl Banquest when they showed their highlight film? That’s “NO CLASS”. Talk about bachi! Another thing that upset me is the mass exodus of UH fans and was only in the 3rd quarter to boot.

  117. al December 25, 2010 11:21 am

jeezy…i think he meant that of the top 8 lineman, five would graduate. that would be the five seniors four who started yesterday and ginlack.

  118. whitey December 25, 2010 11:21 am

jeezy, i like your evaluation and prospects, but am thinking that if we can get a slot that is big or bigger than Salas, oooooh, the options the rns would have. thanks and look forward to your inputs.

  119. Kris December 25, 2010 11:24 am

Did anyone catch the blond sitting around the 40 yard line behind the Tulsa bench? What a set of mouth-watering mammories!

  120. whitey December 25, 2010 11:25 am

jeezy, you making me look good by bringing up the “why” during the game. that is another part of our coaches inability to make changes during the game and this has been a consistent negative through the whole season, not only this game.

  121. whitey December 25, 2010 11:26 am

  123. al December 25, 2010 11:33 am

    hind sight is 20-20.

one, i felt we were in trouble when it appeared that we didn’t take tulsa seriously as the lack of preparation days were few and far in between. we virtually took two weeks off. surely the rain cancelled a few good days of workouts, but, shouldn’t that have been taken in to consideration since it is the “rainy season”.

20-20= we might want to practice without pause following the last game of the season. go a bit light on finals week but not take a complete hiatus. then pick up the pace immediately following finals.

two, knowing the importance of this game for the program, why risk your top two slotbacks in a game of this much significance. especially when you are already losing your lwr, lt, and lg.

20-20= unfortunately pilares gets his knee blown up and is out. this meant we lost four offensive starters. another one of those, i told you, incidents.

three, you lose your slotback and yet, you let the only experienced slotback return kickoffs. i thought for sure blount would yield to sampson after pilares was injured.

20-20= oh, but noooo. who’s thinking out there? i’ll bet lunch at maple garden that the mouse was fighting both issues two and three.

four, i don’t know who’s decision it was, but, we didn’t come out in the second half an adjustment to counter the adjustments that tulsa would make.

20-20= apparently none. we did not have the wherewithal to do the smart things to win.

i have a longer list but i’ll bury it for now.

to the warriors, you did well with what you were dealt with and with what you were instructed to do. no shame for you guys. be proud. we are.

    …nuff said

  130. Hatetosayit December 25, 2010 12:07 pm

I just hate to say it, but, in a big game the team that is best prepared will have the best chance to win it.

Yesterday, that did happen. Tulsa was better prepared to counter our rns offense and the adjusted in the second half so well. Tulsa looked to be in fine tuned position to win it. Surely we gave them too many opportunities what with all the turnovers in the first half that ended in the endzone inspite of an outstanding effort by our defense.

However, our lack of preparation bore the dismal performance no matter which way you shake it up.

We obviously need to correct that, we haven’t won the big game in years.

Yes, we should beat up on what’s left of wac next year. Per Larry Price, “physical superiority cancels all theory…”, true to some degree, but, not in the big games. Superior preparation by the coaches cancels all physical superiority”

A small example of such is that poor freshman sensation John Hardy-Tuilau, he makes an excellent play on a blocked PAT, but, I’ll bet no one coach ever told him or the specials teams guys the rule of the batted ball.

Sorry I missed the tailgate again. Just had too much to do and barely got to the game in time for the opening kickoff. My computer was down for most of the last 2 days. My special guest came with us but, like I said, we got there just at the kickoff. My biggest fear came through yesterday. I thought not enough quality (rain)practices would especially hurt a passing team. The long layoff hurts timing, focus on taking care of the ball, players needing to have different game plans so they could adjust to what was happening, etc.. Injuries and academic casualties hurt big time. Yes, excuses are for losers, but evaluating to improve on your mistakes, makes winners. I hope the coaches just don’t let the game go, saying it was just unfortunate or a bad day. They must evaluate everything, from strategies, to practices, to the Waikiki stay, to looking at the timetable between their last game and a bowl game with finals and academic qualifying, to looking at personnel playing, and on and on. Coaches jobs are not finished just because the games are.

A few days ago it was mentioned that the MWC may choose to send Hawaii to another bowl other that the Sheraton Bowl. Maybe the timing of the SB is not suited for the Warriors with finals and finding out that certain players would not be eligible right before the game. When did Tulsa have their finals? How did they cope? A December 29th game better? Both teams still could spend Christmas in Hawaii. I just picked the date at random and didn’t really look into it. With another bowl game played on the 10th of January or even later, maybe a January date would be better suited. Wouldn’t the nation want to watch a bowl game in Hawaii in January when most of the mainland is frozen? Sure, it may rain in Hawaii, but at 79 degrees, its still better weather than most of the mainland.I’m just throwing it out there for conversation. May be some other Tsaiko has a better solution and some of the powers to be could/would listen. I know the Christmas eve game is the only game on that day, but just thinking of UH and the timing.

We have weaknesses everybody knows that. Tulsa had the perfect athletes, the coaches knew our weaknesses, and they played a better game. We all know what is needed to be a better team. Let’s hope that Mack and coaches can go out and get recruits that can help us. Meanwhile I will go into a long withdrawal while UH football is on hiatus. Better times in 2011.

pj2 #138 – I think that when we move over to the MWC that we se should no longer schedule 13 games. This would give the players the time to catch up on their school work before finals week and also give them time to heal any injuries.

New Years Resolutions for the UH Coaching Staff.

    1. Make Special Teams a separate group totally. No Starters please. Need complete Psychos for the team. Off season ST camp with Chad Owens, David Maiava, Leonard Peters etc. leading the charge.

    2. Teach Alex Dunnachie to kick-off from a tee. Higher and deeper balls for no runbacks.

    3. Recruit for depth at O-line, D-line, LB, CB & S. Need to prep for No-huddle offenses.

    4. Have Junior days for local high schools. Mentor and encourage partial and non-qualifiers to make the grade and SATs. This is why schools like Tulsa have so many Okies on the roster.

    5. Develop a curriculum for football & other players including, sports announcing, sports journalism, sports management, sports officiating, sports security, etc.

  150. A-House December 25, 2010 2:02 pm

For a team ranked 116 in pass defense, Tulsa’s DB sure stuck like glue to UH receivers – so tight that nearly all had no clear a chance to catch passes – yes, Salas had 12 receptions for 212 yards, but there were hard earned!

when Miah got behind the DB for the long reception, I was sure it would be a TD, but that CB sure put on the after burners to catch him at the 1 yd line.

why is it that those so called “lousy” DBs play so well against UH?

With the MWC having a number of bowl qualifiers a rotation of games within MWC cities might be an interesting proposition. Boise, Las Vegas, San Diego, New Mexico and Hawaii could rotate for the top teams depending how they finish. Its like creating a west coast version of the BCS bowls. Any team qualifying for a BCS game goes elsewhere and MWC teams stay within the designated cities.

  152. mctruck December 25, 2010 2:08 pm

I think Tulsa’s coaches studied how to attack our defense very well…in particular, seeing how BSU took it to our “D” with their no huddle offense. What I can’t figure out is why in the second half, it seems our defense almost stopped altogether getting/rushing the qb???, he was left just standing all by his lonesome with soooo much time to find a reciever who was wide open.

Oh well, I got the rest of the off-year to figure that one out????

  153. AlaWai December 25, 2010 2:11 pm

Mctruck, trying to push 350lbs of OL, pushing back at you for 3 hours will gas anyone. We need depth!

  154. mctruck December 25, 2010 2:12 pm

Moniz has got to be more proactive in becoming a running threat come next year other wise I think he is going to be replaced by a qb with some wheels.

  155. mctruck December 25, 2010 2:13 pm

    #153…true,true.

  156. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 2:14 pm

For Hawaii to be able to prepare for Pilares being out of the game and another receiver to start is nearly impossible to prepare for so quickly.

    Nobody could have predicted that.

I mean you would (1) Need to somehow figure that Pilares would get hurt or know that he suffered from a recent injury that may or may not get aggravated again.

    (2) a lot of time to practice with some of the 2nd string receivers.

Too bad we didn’t have this info or the opportunities.

  157. mctruck December 25, 2010 2:15 pm

I think one of Tulsa’s plans was to stop Green from running up the middle, etc. and looks like it worked pretty well.

  158. RupertDaStupert December 25, 2010 2:18 pm

It wouldn’t matter if Moniz throws an interception every other pass in fall camp. He seems to have a free pass with Mack. When he had a disciplinary problem and held out the rest of 2010 fall camp, Mack simply allowed him back to be the starter. After losing his starting job to Colt Brennan in 2005, he was heir apparent to Colt’s job in 2008 after Colt left Tyler Graunke got into Macks doghouse in 2008 fall camp and never reclaimed his starting job. We could recruit the #1 jc qb in the country or the #1 high school qb recruit in the country who can throw like Dan Marino and run like Joe Montana and Moniz would still start. For some reason, he has a free pass with Mack. I’m not saying this because I dislike Moniz, but I call it as I see it.

#156….giving 2nd/3rd stringers more reps., playing time translates to more depth as AlaWai mentioned…so I hope the coaches realize this for future reference. fingers crossed. happy new year everyone.

Yesterdays game was a Perfect Storm for Hawaii.

Lose your starting left side starters due to disqualification.

Lose your highest scoring slot and deep threat(s).

Get your QB banged up in the first quarter.

Having to cancel practice because of school work. (We could have lost even more starters)

Playing a Tulsa team hungry for respect.

Having a Hawaii team peak too early to finish the season.

And yet, we played with pride, respect and passion to the end.

PS: If you were a Hawaii Warrior, how would you feel seeing the stands empty out in the 3rd quarter? If you were a recruit, what impression does this give? Are we ready for Big Time Football?

#158. Mo had to go through a Hooponpono to regain the confidence of the coaches and his teammates. Otherwise he would not have been reinstated. The suspension hurt his season preparation but he still emerged with the job. I would not be so quick to bench the #1 passer in NCAA football in favor of others who had the chance to take the job on the field in spring camp and pre-season practice. The team philosophy is and always will be to put the best on the field. Until someone takes it away, Mo is the QB.

  164. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 2:36 pm

#159, had we had more days to practice, we very well may have been able to give those 2nd/3rd string some time….its good for the bowl prep its good for 2011.

Merry Christmas, m-homey! Thanks for the graphics 😉

    Ho ho ho, Brew!

    Yup perfect storm.

Slugger and I took advantage of the exodus and scampered down to the front section of orange to cheer closer during the last few minutes.

But we were on the mauka side so our calls to the Warriors after the game were in vain…

Tenacity was rewarded after the game with a chance to hug and thank Shane and his family later on, hug Kenny’s mom, greet Aussie ohana, and hug and thank Vaughn and Jett who were on the plane home.

That’s what it’s all about to me- Warrior football is about helping our talented student-athletes develop their skills and opportunities for the future.

It’s all a process of development… and Hawaii has a dang awesome program.

So- will the Cardinals do to the Cowgirls what I think they are going to do? WOW!

    Happy Christmas NFL football!

  168. AlaWai December 25, 2010 2:56 pm

#164. The reps you speak of must be experienced under game conditions. Whenever we are up by 3-4 TDs the 2nd and 3rd stringers should be mixed in with 1st teamers to gain the experience and see how they perform. We need to use the routs to accomplish this.

no it should be both actually. we should have used them in our blowouts in the 3rd-4th Q’s and run real plays not “run out the clock this is garbage time oh fun” plays.

    174. I agree.

  176. AlaWai December 25, 2010 3:18 pm

BTW, does anyone know what happened to Vili and the pahu drums?

  177. Garret December 25, 2010 3:20 pm

A few days ago it was mentioned that the MWC may choose to send Hawaii to another bowl other that the Sheraton Bowl. Maybe the timing of the SB is not suited for the Warriors with finals and finding out that certain players would not be eligible right before the game.

    papajoe2,

There is one big flaw with this, no matter how good it sounds for another bowl to help UH have more preparation time. The 2 MWC bowls that are candidates for UH are the Las Vegas Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl. The Vegas bowl was 2 days before the Hawaii Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl was the day before the Hawaii Bowl. If you factor in the day of travel, UH would have 3 days less to practice for the Vegas Bowl (the most likely alternative to the Hawaii Bowl) and 2 days less to practice for the Poinsettia Bowl!

The other MWC bowls that are possible are the Humanitarian Bowl and the New Mexico Bowl, which were both played 6 days before the Hawaii Bowl. Considering that you lose 1 day for travel, that is 7 less days for practice!

If you think about it, UH didn’t have a single fully attended practice until the day that the Humanitarian Bowl and New Mexico Bowl was played! So, if UH kept their same practice philosophy, they would have *0* full practices before those bowl games!

  178. Garret December 25, 2010 3:24 pm

It was great to attend the basketball game today with my parents. UH won big and was way ahead the entire game (what a start of that game!) and I caught one of the t-shirts the cheerleaders from Japan threw into the stands.

I was very impressed with the players that Gib recruited. UH matched Mississippi State in size and athleticism–that is a SEC school that they matched up with. I liked how the players passed the ball so rapidly on offense and how UH didn’t waste the entire shot clock just dribbling the ball.

  179. Garret December 25, 2010 3:29 pm

I talked about how I wished the coaches would let the backups play in other games when the games were decided, with the starting defense in the game until the very end and Moniz throwing to Salas at the end of blowouts even late in the 4th quarter the past 2 seasons (as recently as yesterday). UH left its starters in on so many blowouts–Paredes making tackles with a minute left in the game in blowout at Fresno, etc.

That may be great to run up the score and to pad stats (especially when Moniz/Salas were among the leaders on offense and Paredes was among the leaders in tackles), but it is not the best way to prepare the team for the future or for injuries. This has consistently bothered me, but I know it isn’t going to change so I’ll just stop talking about it.

  180. al December 25, 2010 3:38 pm

vili is contracted to uh. i guess that the hawaii bowl did not wish to pay vili that kind of money that he demands.

  181. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 3:38 pm

    #179,

Being Hawaii, leading in stats gets you nothing really special, especially at the national media level. Winning games, games on National TV will get peoples attention.

I’m with you on that change. Give the starters as much time as they need to do what they got to do, maybe the extra game time practice to ensure they can last all 4 quarters…but at some point give the reserves some real playing experience.

I get so sick when I see us up by 30+ pts and the reserves are in just to run out the clock.

    Oh wells wutevers.

Oh and MERRY CHRISTMAS! I so forgot to post that earlier haha.

  188. Slugger December 25, 2010 3:55 pm

    iwwthm,

#164 ~ The second & third string players do get reps during practice. They are on the scout team and get to practice against the 1’s. I think more of you need to go to practice and check it out. Even guys like Darius Bright, Darryl McBride, etc. who are redshirting get to practice. So, stop harping on it. They may not get as many reps, but it’s not like they are always on the sidelines taking a knee. I’m really glad that Shane got a bunch of reps at the last 2 practices since Rausch’s eye was infected. That helped.

GO TO PRACTICE! Support the team outside of gameday. They really do appreciate it. Actually, someone was saying last night that in the future, practice may be closed once we go to the MWC. Why? But in the meantime, you can still watch ’em.

  189. Slugger December 25, 2010 3:55 pm

White pants and white tops. That explains everything. Cannot win football games if you are playing in your white pajamas. Talk all you want about practice time, preparation, suspensions, injuries, lack of speed, or inadequate game time adjustments.

The game of football is mental…all mental. Playing in your white pajamas doesn’t help your confidence. It doesn’t give you the feeling that you can go out and kick someone’s $%&*^#$%. Do you think that when the Hell’s Angels roll into town they are going to be dressed in white pants, and a nicely pressed white shirt? Uh uh.

I don’t have the info, but I bet if you were to compare the winning percentage of Hawaii’s record when they dress in all black as compared to all white, you will see a significant difference.

  195. A-House December 25, 2010 4:03 pm

Coach Mack says he has commitments from “some” local players – hope they hold true to their “word”.

    al:

we still got chance for Lattimore? would be a big time DE recruit!

see others posting “new” names at the skilled positions and have no idea who they are – will know if they commit to UH.

QB – lets see if I got my “mind” connected – 2011, Moniz and Austin will be Sr; Graves, Shutter and Nielsen will be redshirt sophmores; Kevin Spain will be a redshirt Freshman.

if UH secures a QB commit, he can red shirt in 2011 and be a redshirt Freshman in 2012 while the dynamic trio will be redshirt Jrs and Spain will be a redshirt sophmore. Thus, when 2013 comes around, UH will have the dynamic trio as redshirt Srs, Spain will be a redshirt Jr, and 2011 QB will be a redshirt Sophmore – and UH can secure another QB so he can redshirt in 2012 – can UH establish itself to maintain this trend?

I mentioned to Mrs A-House last week that UH has not recruited an African American QB for a long time and the last one to play was Mikey Carter in 1992 – there must be good ones out there as we see them on TV using a “RNS system”.

  196. A-House December 25, 2010 4:06 pm

Don’t really understand what “more exposure” means. Exposure to snow, exposure to television, exposure to the NFL, I’m not sure.

  200. Slugger December 25, 2010 4:18 pm

    A-House,

    #188,

    Slugger,

Yes I know the reserves get practice..the practice I was referring to was pre-bowl game in where they could have used the extra allotted time.

the bigger issue long term is seeing them get real playing time. Many teams can play any given team on Saturday and win…

I remember Brian Kelly from Cincinnati saying (and I paraphrase) “We can play and beat any team in the country, even the Florida, Texas, LSU, Ohio St. etc…its just doing it week in and week out…we don’t have the depth of players to sustain that level of play…”

The same can be said about Boise St. etc…or for all teams that are not the big names of CFB. The very same could be said about us…When Pilares is out it throws our offense out of tune.

My hopes is that our reserves and future players get that real game experience to prep for the games ahead.

  204. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 4:32 pm

mctruck: December 25th, 2010 at 2:12 pm Moniz has got to be more proactive in becoming a running threat come next year other wise I think he is going to be replaced by a qb with some wheels.

Unless Rolo gets away from the run and shoot, this is NOT our offense.

  205. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 4:34 pm

From Reardon’s blog….truer words have never been said.

“The following contribution and starting point for discussion is from reader Gary Beck:

Your article today had some truth that I think should be expanded. Specifically, the quote, “They jumped all our routes” clearly shows a huge gap in preparation between the two teams, as does the obvious similarity between the first two picks. In other words, the Bows were clearly out-coached because game plans are based on research done by the coaching staff, as are the preparatory practices. Very little can usually be blamed on the players except things like fumbles and wounded duck passes.

The coach at my school has famously said, “Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves” and therein lies the main problem with UH football.”

  206. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 4:37 pm

HawaiiMongoose: December 25th, 2010 at 4:01 pm Al #123, you said it all. The UH coaches were presented with a LOT of harsh lessons yesterday. I sure hope they learned from the experience.

I too want a job where you can screw up BIG TIME more than once, get paid a high wage salary compared to the rest of the working stiffs that usually can get fired for no reason (i.e. laid off).

  207. Hawaiianbod December 25, 2010 4:40 pm

actually, comparing practices to game situations is like comparing Steve  to the Pope. The scout team, while practicing against the 1’s, run only the opponents plays. It does nothing UH offensive-related. Playing the 2’s & 3’s during blowouts will only help the Warriors when the unexpected arise (i.e. injuries, academics, suspensions, etc.)

  208. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 4:41 pm

Another coach says a similar thing:

“SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF” –Bob Coolen

Hard not to agree considering the small details in life or anything should never become problems because they are SMALL DETAILS!!!

Concept is foreign to some people.

  212. whitey December 25, 2010 5:12 pm

Will we lose any recruits??? Maybe, but I believe da warriors will get their future players because of their season performance and not their bowl performance. There are still lots of very good potentials out there who are either unsigned, waiting for openings, or just plain unnoticed.

  213. whitey December 25, 2010 5:17 pm

basically, many of today’s parents look at their players as potential pro material. then you add in the family friends and relatives which adds fuel. and you have what pride is referring to.

  214. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 5:20 pm

What was the difference in coaching philosophy between June Jones and Mack?

Does anyone know what his philosophy was on getting reserves playing time and getting them as prepared as best as possible?

I can’t remember how much real playing time the reserves got under JJ’s belt.

  215. whitey December 25, 2010 5:23 pm

to me, for a player to become better, he needs to be exposed to actual game day conditions and for coaches to have a better feel of each player, they need to put them in real games. but will this happen for da warriors coaches???? right now, NO. future, ?????

  216. whitey December 25, 2010 5:24 pm

iwonder, and when you look back, is this part of the reason why we got our okoles in the sugar bowl?????

Cows are doing what I hoped the Warriors wojld do.

  221. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 5:40 pm

We can’t change culture over night, we can’t change perception over night, we can’t do a lot of things over night. i understand that.

The bar has been raised since JJ, since the Sugar Bowl, since the invite to the MWC…

I’m sorry if some fans feel that “good, is good enough” and we need to be happy with it all. but the demands only go up…As Lou Holtz says “You are either growing, or you are dying…”

In 2 years we will add 2 tough teams SDSU and AF to our schedule to replace the lower tier of the WAC….it doesn’t get easier.

As a fan I do my level best to support the team. Ive held season tickets since I was 7, donate within my financial means, and cheer the team on….and as a fan I demand no less than 110% from the coaches out on the field and that means delivering the goods when it counts.

I’m within my rights to say and not ashamed to say to the coaches that last night, your best wasn’t good enough for me and my family and we demand more…

  222. whitey December 25, 2010 5:41 pm

iwonder, you and me in the same boat. personally, i don’t believe in the philosophy that you don’t lose you position to injury which is currently one of the team’s philosophy. me, i believe that you do not lose your place on the team, but you got to work your way back into contention because in many cases, you are not the same player prior to injury.

  223. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 5:45 pm

June Jones is GONE and doesnt spend one time thinking about UH football so why should we?

The only thing UH fans should be concerned with is Coach Mack’s philosophy. The REAL one, not the stuff we hear about in the papers.

Two EPIC FAILURES under his watch and TWO senior classes walked away empty-handed and I think we deserve to be skeptical.

My own disappointment sucks, but to see the faces of our student-athletes in the manner they were last night is bothersome. Our student-athletes do not deserve to be lead down a path by a blind man.

  224. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 5:48 pm

To clarify, I meant why should we waste time thinking about JJ???

  225. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 5:50 pm

    #223,

i 2nd your last paragraph…feel god awful about how the team and especially seniors must be feeling.

  226. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 5:53 pm

    #224,

Just trying to draw out what the difference in philosophy was in terms of something like getting game time to our reserves

its the same offense and so I am wondering if JJ’s phil was different in that respect. thats all.

You learn from history or you get to repeat it.

  228. whitey December 25, 2010 5:55 pm

i kinda learn thru the years that transformation is a much better word than change. da warrior’s D is slowly transforming into another level of play and that is a real positive. Coach Mc is slowly transforming into his position. was thinking what word would be easiest for me to describe that somehow is not transforming. Ego, maybe. ixed mindset, highly possible, but that is 2 words. Chameleon, perfect word. Watch any chameleon type animal and you see how it transforms to survive and win. It neva stays in the same mode.

  229. G (China) December 25, 2010 5:56 pm

Merry Christmas everyone! UH was fun to watch this season in person! Much Kudos to you guys. Only one problem I had with the lead up to the game and that was how with it came closure to a season that seemed a little melancholy. You had the whole moving out of the dorm and Salas leaving for CA after the game. Would love to had heard more about what they would remember most throughout the season or what kind of Christmas gift would be the best. But still great season. Thank you UH!

AL #180 – I don’t believe the sins of the father should be put of the shoulders of his children; conversely I don’t believe the sins of the children should be placed on the father.

Of course when the sons decide to play elsewhere, I think the above belief should be suspended!

I did not mind the Marshmellow man back in the early80’s(?) but think we should save the $$ and get a student doing the mascot thing.

  231. whitey December 25, 2010 5:58 pm

merry christmas 702, how are you??? you right about history, me i wen flunk and had to repeat and even then just barely passed.

  232. whitey December 25, 2010 6:02 pm

ok, went to one friendly place for fuud, now my spacecraft is ready to go to another friendly place for more fuud and fun. I truly hope each and every one of you and your family had a great Christmas Day and may it continue thru the year. Prayers for those who are doing well health wise and god speed your recovery.

    Kazz_DROID.X,

I TOTALLY agree! I am sick and tired of hearing (or reading) about JJ in ANY of these blogs!! Much Mahalos for feeling the same!!

  234. 702WarriorFan December 25, 2010 6:05 pm

    Hi whitey,

Hope you have a merry christmas too.

Great lunch at Makino for our christmas day meal.

You like me? keep making the same ole same and I enjoyed

    history too….

Sad that the Warriors weren’t able to give LV his perfect holiday gift yesterday. Just have to wait for next year LV’san birthday

gift which we Tsaikos can enjoy too.

  235. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 6:52 pm

702WarriorFan: December 25th, 2010 at 5:53 pm You learn from history or you get to repeat it.

If mistakes are valuable lessons, Coach Mack is a richer man than his $1.1 million/year.

  236. 702WarriorFan December 25, 2010 7:01 pm

Not a history lesson, right place at the right time under the circumstances that existed. Mistake? TBA, personally I don’t believe so, but then I’ve been proven wrong about many things. If we are wrong, we learn or better yet, we have a better AD than our past fumbling history.

  237. kama krab December 25, 2010 7:17 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Tough just tough. What to say.

Let me put my feelings in a simple sentence.

Big time, not going to happen anytime soon.

    What a joke.

  238. kama krab December 25, 2010 7:18 pm

Postseason 4 of the last 5 years

    4 blowouts

    Big time, what a joke

  239. kama krab December 25, 2010 7:20 pm

Oh and make sure to turn off the lights.

The team plays better and the big dog can think a little better.

Turn on the lights and the big dog go’s into hiding.

  240. kama krab December 25, 2010 7:23 pm

Does the big dog deserve an extension or does he deserve the dog house outside. I think the ladder is appropriate.

  241. A-House December 25, 2010 7:49 pm

    Anology to consider:

studying a play book = reading text books

watching film = watching others practice

playing in a game = going out into the world to work

nothing can stand up to actual game experience – something UH coaches must do with greater freqency for the non-starters to catch up and be ready in the future – to say and to do are not the same!

  242. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 7:50 pm

I don’t think an extension at the current rate of pay etc. is the right thing to do at this time.

we can wait for the year his contract is expired to see whether we should extend it or not.

  243. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 25, 2010 7:51 pm

    A-house,

    I concur

  244. A-House December 25, 2010 7:52 pm

I say if the “top dog” says change, it must occur with general guidance from the top dog.

As in the case of the Marine General on DADT, Obama should have invited him to the White House and tell him, “this is what I beleive and expect compliance”. You have 2 options – to support my decision 100% or give me your resignation now!

  245. kama krab December 25, 2010 8:29 pm

Sorry for sounding off but these boys deserve better then what happened yesterday. They deserve a bunch of coaches that give a damn. They deserve a big dog that remembers his own name every so often let alone his own players names. They deserve to prepped better for a the game better then they where yesterday.

For me, you can put the talk of contract extension to rest cause at this point, 2 postseason appearances=2 blowouts. Do you think that deserves an extension. I don’t

  246. kama krab December 25, 2010 8:31 pm

Sorry so mad, forgot how fo talk englash.

  247. whitey December 25, 2010 8:34 pm

A House, and if was me in the general’s position, I would tell Obama here are my weapons, now you go fight the war. Today’s military is not like the past and if you want to restrict the military, don’t fight wars.

  248. Bryson December 25, 2010 8:37 pm

Merry Xmas everyone…Well that was a tough game to watch yesterday…But it happens look at Utah…We had our chances but couldn’t capitalize and giving the ball away 5 times in a half won’t help your situation any…But I must say I’m proud of the way this team played all season long week in and week out they put their health and hearts on the line for us to be entertained these kids don’t get paid to do this(unless your from USC lol)For most of these guys football is just a way to further they’re schooling and become productive members of society…While I was dissapointed to hear three of our plAyers were ruled ineligible I feel even worse for Kealoha who earned the right to be on the field with his teammates yesterday but things happen best of luck to him and the other Warrior seniors who have represented Our Islands,Our State and All of us Very Well!!!Mahalo

  249. LizKauai -iPad December 25, 2010 8:40 pm

Wow… Pretty interesting conversation for a Christmas day.

From everything I have heard- June Jones still has regard for Hawaii and continues to support Hawaii.

I belive we have the best football program Hawaii has had in a long time. Every year gets better and better and i believe next year will be even better. It will improve even faster if it has public support.

There are plenty of examples of short-sighted, impatient, self-destructive thinking.. Please, let’s not gomdown that path.

    God Bless.

  250. whitey December 25, 2010 8:40 pm

there are many warriors who practice regularly, but neva get into games for whatever reason. if you not willing to take some chances with them, why keep them??? i don’t know much about how players are selected, but if you recruited them, i assume that they met your requirements to play, so are you willing to give them a shot????

  251. L10pc December 25, 2010 8:41 pm

Happy Birthday SteveM and Chawan Cut! Hope it was a good one!

  252. LizKauai -iPad December 25, 2010 8:44 pm

Kama krab – Ke Akua knows what we need. Can we not believe and trust?

I habe to believe that all will be good.

  253. Bryson December 25, 2010 8:48 pm

Kama….I think that his body of work makes him deserving of an extension with a restructured contract…Let’s not forget that first bowl game loss was against an underrated Notre Dame team who had more than a few future NFL’ers on their roster..I don’t understand though how a coach is to blame if the game plan is there but just wasn’t being executed…No one forced Shane Austin to throw off his back foot,No One forced Mo to throw into traffic,No one forced Greg to fumble the punt before the half…These are all players mistakes it’s a different story if there are no turnovers and we just couldn’t move the ball then yes it’s a coaching issue because the players did everything they were supposed to do…Let’s also not forget how big a part Kealoha plays in this offense we had 3 players playing our most important position who have hardly played this season…But to judge Mack by two games when his team has beaten ranked teams during the regular season is a bit unfair to him and this staff…Remember also Mack has had a part in 3 WAC Championship Teams…..3 out of the 4-5 Hawaii has won in over 30 years in the WAC….

  254. whitey December 25, 2010 8:50 pm

liz, yes the team did exceed more than what most expected, but their no 1 goal was to get to the Hawaii Bowl. With that being their no 1 priority, was their coaching and play in the Hawaii Bowl acceptable???? personally, i could live with us losing the game, but the “hows and whys” of this loss is not acceptable. game is over, but will da warrior program continue to struggle in future bowls because of similar “hows and whys”????

  255. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 8:51 pm

    Kama,

Dont apologize for anything. This game was huge for us.

Too bad the most important and heavily paid individuals to this equation never felt the same.

“Our goal is to win a bowl not just make it. We get one week off then we practice, then we’ll kick their a–”

    Someone lied AGAIN.

  256. whitey December 25, 2010 8:55 pm

Bryson, your points are excellent, but just my thought, who teaches the qbs’ and why is SALAS and Pilares on the punt team???

  257. Kazz_DROID.X December 25, 2010 8:59 pm

18 other programs rely on the success of UH Football.

Hundreds of other UH student-athletes rely on the success of 100.

I dont make the rules with regards to this fact and Im not an idealist to think it can be changed. I DONT like the fact that other programs are at financial risk because of ONE, but this is what society has dictated.

More failures like this cost the ENTIRE athletic department as a whole.

Do I think $1.1 million a year is too much? NO. The lroblem is NOT the amount of the salary, its who’s earning it considering the responsibilities I just mentioned.

  258. whitey December 25, 2010 9:00 pm

i know that we have very good players returning or coming off grayshirt, but my brain keeps asking the same question. How are da warriors going to keep 5 or 6 qbs if you only going play 1?????

  259. whitey December 25, 2010 9:03 pm

ok, I said enough, so going just lurk and wait till Feb 4th, signing day.

  260. Garret December 25, 2010 9:06 pm

The Hawaii Bowl is *lucky* that C-USA is in such great financial shape ($9 million from the NCAA basketball tournament, high-paying bowl games against BCS AQ schools, 3x the TV money than the WAC) and can take the financial loss to get a team in the Hawaii Bowl. No wonder the Pac-10 dumped the Hawaii Bowl.

The Hawaii Bowl pays $750k per school (basically the minimum of the bowl games).

C-USA gave Tulsa $600k for its travel expenses for the Hawaii Bowl. So, Tulsa will basically break even financially from what has been reported.

The Hawaii Bowl requires that C-USA buy 10,000 tickets at $40 per ticket. That is $400,000 in tickets! Tulsa said about 800, and C-USA lost $20 for each of those tickets (Tulsa earned $20 for each ticket they sold) and $40 for the other 9,200 tickets. So, C-USA lost $384,000 on tickets to the Hawaii Bowl.

So, the Hawaii Bowl will pay C-USA $750k and C-USA will give out about $1 million to the Hawaii Bowl and Tulsa…in other words, they lost $250k for sending a team to the Hawaii Bowl.

The Hawaii Bowl paying out the minimum for bowl games AND requiring that a school pay their own travel expenses and buy 10,000 tickets means that you can forget about any Pac-12 or other AQ conference from coming to the Hawaii Bowl. If C-USA wasn’t willing to lose money, they would dump the Hawaii Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl would be left with a MAC or Sun Belt school that would be happy to lose money to get a bowl spot.

  261. Garret December 25, 2010 9:07 pm

I saw the coaches going to the coaches booth before the game and saw the devastation on their faces after the game. *Nobody* will convince me that they didn’t care.

  262. Bryson December 25, 2010 9:11 pm

So Kazz you feel Mack has not earned his keep? So Mack has gone 24-17 during 3 years….Won the WAC this year…in a year we were projected to finish 5th or below…and Got us to Bowl Game 2 out of those 3 years…also has consistently improved graduation rates which ultimately is why these athletes are in school to get a degree…and he still doesn’t earn your respect because of one game….

  263. Bryson December 25, 2010 9:13 pm

And when you speak of failures let’s not forget one of the main reasons why we are moving into the MWC and BW is because of this main sports success this season…

  264. Garret December 25, 2010 9:16 pm

Mack was paid above market value and got a VERY unusual contract without a buyout clause. That does *not* mean that he was the wrong choice or that he should be replaced, it just means that UH panicked and gave out a contract that they really couldn’t afford due to the tight budget situation they had. UH and JD probably knows that they overpaid Mack and were put in a bad situation.

After a 10-win season, it is hard to talk to a coach about taking a pay cut. However, UH should structure Mack’s contract like how it should have been done last time–lower base salary with incentives (graduating players, conference titles, attendance rewards). So, if things went badly and UH was hurt financially due to the team struggling, at least they would save on the coach’s salary. If things go well, then the coach could make even more than now and share in the increased revenue that UH would be getting.

In other words, Mack would make more money if the team wins. The *only* way he would come out behind is if the team loses big. That would seem like a win-win for UH and for Mack.

JD should make it clear to Mack that the money saved from his base salary would immediately be used to increase the pool for the assistant coaches. Good assistant coaches make a head coach better. Losing Rolo would set UH back significantly…who can take over his role?

  265. SteveM December 25, 2010 9:17 pm

Thank you for the birthday wishes, everyone!

  266. Garret December 25, 2010 9:18 pm

After last season, Chris Petersen was coming off his second *win* in a BCS Bowl. He had almost his entire team coming back and he had a team that was in the top 5 in every preseason poll. And Chris Petersen took a PAY CUT to sign his extension.

Why did Petersen agree to a significant pay cut? He said that he needed to do that because Boise State’s Athletic Department was having budget problems. By the way, their Athletic Department is in *much* better financial shape than UH’s Athletic Department.

  267. Garret December 25, 2010 9:19 pm

    Happy Birthday SteveM and chawan_cut!

  268. Bryson December 25, 2010 9:19 pm

Whitey, its plain and simple Pilares was put on the punt team to increase his shot at the NFL with Salas he’s back there to fair catch punts if he calls for a fair catch there’s no fumble and 3 less points on the board for Tulsa….As for the QB’s I doubt any coach would teach his QB to throw int’s on purpose it’s like saying June and Dan Morrison taught Timmy Chang to throw int’s….it just comes down to bad decisions at the wrong time…believe me the game plan was there but when you throw a pic on your first possession deep in your territory it’s gonna be a long day…Like Mo said Anything thing that couldn’t gone wrong did…plain n simple

  269. Garret December 25, 2010 9:20 pm

When Pat Hill took a pay cut this summer when he signed his extension, Hill said this:

“It’s not about the money,” Hill said. “This is home. I believe in this community. I get a lot of satisfaction seeing these kids succeed on the field, with their families and in their careers.

  270. Bryson December 25, 2010 9:21 pm

    Could’ve gone wrong*

  271. Garret December 25, 2010 9:23 pm

Coaches all around the country are taking pay cuts and agreeing to performance-based contracts. Pat Hill went from $1 million to $700k in base salary. Agreeing to a lower base salary gives a coach an incentive to *earn* his money, with the coach making more than before if the team wins and making less if the team does not.

Hill – who made $1 million last year – is taking a $300,000 dollar pay cut in 2011. USA Today reports cutting the coaches’ salary is part of a more conservative, performance-based approach to compensation that a few schools across the nation have taken with newly hired coaches.

  272. SteveM December 25, 2010 9:26 pm

Hi Garret — how long will you be home this visit?

  273. Garret December 25, 2010 9:27 pm

Here is what Idaho’s coach makes and some other WAC coaches. Idaho only pays its head coach $166k…the rest comes from donors.

Akey’s new contract could earn him over $514,000 in 2011 up to $544,000+ in 2014 if he meets all seven performance-based incentives within the contract each year.

His base salary, paid by the state, is $165,796.80. Other compensation is a media payment of $190,000 per year, increasing by $10,000 every year. All salary beyond the base amount is paid by athletic department donors.

New Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes will bring in $450,000 in 2010, while new San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre will make $430,000.

Nevada’s Chris Ault will make $435,000 in 2010. New Mexico State’s Dwayne Walker and Utah State’s Gary Anderson each make around $400,000 per year.

    SteveM,

I leave on Wednesday. I actually have to work on Thursday because I have a big satellite program (I’m in charge as the Principal Investigator) kicking off in early January and I have to get some things done to get ready. Plus, I have to save my vacation for the Europe cruise in the summer, so I have to work 1 day next week.

  275. SteveM December 25, 2010 9:34 pm

Garret — That soon? Well, if it’s for the cruise…. 🙂

Hopefully you can attend the Cattle Call on Tuesday (Maple Garden). Al’s post #11 today.

  276. Garret December 25, 2010 9:34 pm

I think that firing Mack would be crazy, with the season UH had and with the $2.2 million left on his guaranteed contract.

I think that giving Mack an extension that would give him above market value while forcing UH to give manini, below-market salaries to the assistant coaches would be even more crazy.

UH will never be able to have continuity and truly build a program if its best assistant coaches (Cav, Mack in 1999, etc.) leave because they are paid a fraction of what they can make elsewhere. Giving Mack an extension that would force UH to eventually not have the money to hold on to Rolo and others would not make any sense.

When Chris Petersen won his first BCS bowl game, he earned a below-market salary…but BSU paid their assistant coaches above-market salaries. Petersen wasn’t even the highest-paid coach in the WAC but his assistant coaches were paid at Pac-10 levels. If you want to build a program, you *have* to keep the assistants you want to keep and be able to hire away good assistants when you have openings.

  277. Garret December 25, 2010 9:35 pm

    SteveM,

I don’t know if I can make it…kind of late notice and we are squeezing in so many family things in such a short time. I’ll try, though.

    Turnovers!!!

  279. NorthShoreFan December 25, 2010 9:49 pm

haawarrior..#116..my thoughts as I read the comments from the Tulsa player interview..why would Warriors boo a video..Coach Mac made some idiot comments prior to the Notre Dame game and look who butts got kicked. Why give any opponent added incentive? I knew the media was giving Tulsa a great motivational tool with all the predictions of a loss, not to mention the odds makers. UH used to use stuff like that for motivation before and it really kicked up the teams performance.

LizK..#167…BIG MAHALO for that post..after reading all the coments from the “coaches” here, I was needing to read something like your post.

10-4 season and the coach gets raked over the coals. The resonsibilities lay with the head coach and Coach Mac is not one to hide from that.

Some are calling for removal of some coaches and it is my hope that I’ll see your application

for the positions, whenever it opens up.

Nothing like putting your expertise to use and getting paid bug money and helping the Warriors next season.

Like Shane Austin stated last night, “The season starts tomorrow”…he’s committed to getting better…we need all you “coaches” to step up and help the team get better…no just sit behind one obscure blog name a act like one coach. Maybe you guys know of a better coach who is looking for a job?…Forward the name to JD..he may take you up o it.

Your disappointments are showing…deal with it.

In the meantime…support those kids who have gave us so much excitement and a great season.

  282. kruzen December 25, 2010 10:05 pm

    NSF, Liz, Garret:

    I agree with your comments.

Disappointing loss? Yes but for myself, thinking positive like Shane Austin is the best thing we can do.

Is it September 3, 2011 yet?

  283. Garret December 25, 2010 10:07 pm

    NorthShoreFan,

Mack’s 7% pay cut was the furlough amount that all the top earners in the Athletic Department had to take. That pay cut is just about over though and he’s at the $1.1 million level again with incentives to take him to $1.3 million or so.

  284. RedZone December 25, 2010 10:12 pm

I have moved on. Do we have a depth chart going into spring ball?

  285. Pride. December 25, 2010 10:20 pm

    Tulsa’s Offensive Breakdown:

    Runnning Yardage: 35%

    Passing Yardage: 65%

    Hawaii’s Offensive Breakdown:

    Running Yardage: 13%

    Passing Yardage: 87%

Tulsa’s offense puts a lot of pressure on Hawaii’s defense. From a percentage standpoint it forces Hawaii to defend both the passing game and the running game. What makes matters even worse is when Tulsa’s offense hits from many different angles, using the entire width and length of the field. Dive, followed by a quick sweep, followed by a long play action pass. That puts a lot of stress and pressure on the perimeter of Hawaii’s defense. I saw a lot of effort from our young men, but many times were simply caught out of position. Who’s to blame? Hard to say. Who’s to say how much more hours of film study is enough? You never know. Sometimes you gamble and come up short.

From looking at the stats again we find that with Hawaii’s ratio of 13% run / 87% pass, that will only encourage Tulsa to be stout up front against the run game with their down linemen, while gambling with the LB’s and having them in a pass coverage first mentality, waiting two seconds and then dropping into their lanes at the third second. That of course may have played a contributing factor in the amount of interceptions that we threw.

While I understand and applaud the head coach’s desire to assist his players by allowing them time to study and do papers. My feeling is that when you signed up to become a Warrior, juggling study and football was part of the program. We could have or should have been practicing from two or three days after the UNLV game. Light physical practices with a little bit of flim work. What that would have done is given the players the message that we take this game seriously and we will take as much time as we can to prepare for Tulsa. By taking two weeks off, it may have given the players the wrong message about the importance of the game. If the head coach says that we don’t need to take all of the alloted time to prepare, then the players hear we don’t need to put that much effort into preparation. Study film, not that important, memorize your assignment, not that important, we’ll have lots of time to prepare later on. Later on, later on, later on, oops it’s raining, we’ll make it up later. Oh gosh darn it we’re in the hotel, why are there so many people around? Who are all of these fans? Why does ESPN want to meet with us now, we have a gameplan to put together. Darn it, let’s cut this short, we got to get ready for the banquet. I’ll tell you what, let’s just do the same thing we did against Nevada, these guys can’t be better than Navada can they? Heck Nevada’s ranked, Tulsa’s not even ranked.

Momentum, momentum, momentum. We had lots of momentum and we lost it. The break was just too long. On day break? Okay Two day break? Better Three day break? Ahhhh, alright. Four day break? No way…too long, you will lose your momentum. Timing, conditioning, camaraderie, mental shaprness, alertness, discipline, all will be lost if the rest is more than two or three days. That’s just my opinion.

But with all due respect. Tulsa is and was a very good footbal team. As I told a few fellow Tsaikos before the game. Look out for Tulsa, they have a very, very hungry coaching staff. they will do whatever it takes to win this game. This game was very important to them. They needed this win.

  286. Pride. December 25, 2010 10:22 pm

#284 – Thanks Red Zone. Okay moving on.

  287. Garret December 25, 2010 10:24 pm

I think that *not* giving Mack an extension would hurt UH in recruiting. The latest that UH can give him an extension would be after next season, since then he’d have 1 year left on his contract. However, I’d think that UH would be best served to give Mack an extension now if he’s pushing for it like it seems…but at a lower base salary with incentives.

The worst possible thing to do would be to wait 20 months and let Mack coach a season while in the last year of his contract. However, JD has a lot of time before then and I’m sure that he’d never let it come down to that…only one AD I can think of would be that incompetent and that AD’s initials are HF.

I’d make sure that one incentive was for graduating his seniors, which is a goal that Mack shares. That rewards Mack for his focus on education…and might insure that the coaches stay on top of things during the season to make sure that UH doesn’t lose 3 starters right before the bowl game next season.

An incentive for winning the conference (co-champs would count) makes sense, especially for 2011 when the WAC is so watered down with no BSU and with Nevada losing their key players.

I *hate* the incentive for going to a bowl game because going to a bowl game doesn’t mean what it used to. A team used to have to have an amazing season to go to a bowl game…now, a team only has to win half of their games–and UH plays a D-IAA team and several WAC schools rated lower than many D-IAA teams (NMSU, SJSU, Utah State, etc.).

I like incentives tied into attendance–if UH makes more money then the coaches should be rewarded. Attendance is tied to wins, and it also gives the coaches an incentive to reach out to the community and help get more fans in the stands.

#283…Garret…true dat…so JD has some work to do…don’t want to be in his shoes right now…with budget being a huge problem..and also to also try a appease all the naysayers in the community who don’t think this contract money is being well spent.

With budget concerns, how do you restructure the payroll so you may be able to keep your best coaches?…or find a new one….

We may need a “rocket” scientist to lend a hand!…LOL!

So we lost 3 offensive players prior to the game then by the first qtr. we lost Pilares and Blount?…5 offensive starters?…out of 11?…wow! almost half the starting team yeah?

Still The Warriors stepped up and going inot the 3 qtr. we was on the verge….but then the wheels came off….literally…fans went for the gates…so much for loyal supporters…

Every time I get a migraine the morning of a ballgame – no matter what sport – it’s a bad sign. I was actually looking forward to making the malassadas to I could focus on something else other than pain and eyeball lightning flashes, but when we arrived we were told it was too late to set up our cooking gear.

Then we found out that someone else had taken over the recycling with the proceeds going to the Tsai-ko Fund – but without bothering to let us know. Now we understand why the HI-5 revenues dropped by about 65% over the past three or four games from earlier this year and the previous three seasons. I really don’t understand why no one said anything -or asked us to donate the proceeds we’d collected to the T-Fund instead of Koa Anuenue.

We had planned to donate $320 to Koa Anuenue for the summer school scholarship program for the eight games – $40 each for seven home games + Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl – but that figure kept spiraling downword. Now we’ll be submitting a cashier’s check for $175 to the summer school fund.

Obviously, we won’t be handling the recycling next season nor will we be bringing anything to a T-Gate that it won’t hurt emotionally and financially to throw away like we had to do with the malassada dough.

By the time we got to our seats, the sun unbearable so I left early in the second quarter and caught a couple of buses back to Kailua leaving the car for DrDoc. I collapsed into bed and slept like I’d been drugged for about nine hours.

When I woke up, my headache was gone which is why the Rainbow Warriors won their game against Mississippi State today.

Hope to see some of you at the Wahine Basketball tournament starting Tuesday evening.

OK vitriolic naysayers. Which coach paid less than Mac would you select. Remember that salary is about half of what they earn with their teams because of alumni perks like radio shows etc. Also remember that the cost of living in most cities are as much as 40% less than living in Hawaii.

Accountability. The demand to win the big ones must tighten. For me, its frustrating because this coaching staff produced some “gems” this season but in a game that was supposed to be the most meaningful we looked unprepared and out-coached again.

    Enough said!

People called for Coach Mack’s head in 2008 and in 2009 and both times I disagreed.

Whoever is directly calling for his head this time is also in the wrong, but what happened last night is not an abnormality as we’ve seen it before and that first lesson was never learned.

    $1.1 million…

JD has to demand more when he sits down with Mack soon.

Simple as that. 10-4 and a share of the WAC title doesnt justify the performance last night considering the stage we were on and how we needed that game.

Money cannot buy what we have in this coaching team.

    I’m talking about love.

We are blessed. When there is love, all things are possible.

The kids are learning that and still have more to learn. These coaches are on the right track. They know the Xs and Os and much much more.

When the kids stay focused on the whole and not their individual selves, they will win. And they will be protected from foolishness.

    Next year will be better.

More is learned from a loss than a win.

    Good night and God Bless!

  299. kama krab December 26, 2010 12:04 am

    Here’s where I stand,

In my opinion, there has been to many scratch your head moments with Mack at the helm. Not practicing for the no huddle, not giving enough practice time, not putting coaches in the right position, practicing under center and not utilizing it, I could name more but it would depress me even more.

I know what Macks record is and am very happy with the record that he has had so far. I feel that if everything was just based on record, then Mack would be just fine right now but guess what, it’s not only about the record, it’s about the body of work, which hasn’t always been pretty. Mack can give every excuse in the world been when it comes down to it, he knows for himself that things haven’t been going as good as his record would show. I call it scratch your head moments. Those moments reared there ugly heads again during the weeks leading up the Hawaii Bowl. Not giving enough film and practice time to the team put the team behind the eight ball big time. As a coach myself, I understand that school comes first but at the same time there will always be time for film sessions and walk through time. That time in my mind was wasted and it showed. Even if they just did film session, that would have really help the boys see what kind of schemes this team might come up with especially for the offense.

All I’m saying is, Coach Mack is still learning on the job and that is fine with me but what we need is someone that is refined in his craft and I don’t think we have that guy. A good defensive mind he is but a head coach needs to be more than just a one track mind, he needs to manage every and that is one thing that I don’t think Mack can do.

  300. kama krab December 26, 2010 12:19 am

Here’s what it comes down to,

Being 23-17 is a pretty decent record for a first time coach and most people would be happy with that but for me the only thing that counts is the big games and it is in those big games where we have look terrible.

  301. AlaWai December 26, 2010 12:32 am

It would be great to get Coach Mac on a special webcast to address everyone’s “concerns”.

Call it a postseason critique of his best fans and harshest critics. Hey ST, can you arrange this?

  302. kama krab December 26, 2010 12:38 am

    Liz #252,

    Long time no see.

    But in regards to believing,

I’ve been a believer of UH football since I was six years old (I am now 29) and have been a season ticket holder since then. I have sat through the good, the bad, and the horrible but still believe this team can one day play with the big boys. I have started to a coach at a high school that turns out two to three D-1 players a year and hope that one day they will start going to UH instead of just laughing at the thought. But when it comes down to it, our beloved Warriors have not yet arrived and it does not look like they will arrive anytime soon.

There is a difference between a solid and an average program. It is mind frame that goes beyon believing. It is one of respect for the game. It is one of doing all you can to get the W. It is one that takes nothing for granted knowing that they other team is working just as hard.

I will always believe that our Warriors can be that team but under Mack, I don’t think we can reach that lofty platform.

Anyways, I wish I could be like you and just put full faith into Coach Mack but he is making harder and harder to do so.

  303. kama krab December 26, 2010 12:45 am

You know what fustrates me the most about this game was how close we where to turning that corner. How close we where to going from a team that rebuilds to a team that reloads. From a team that is saw as an after thought to a team that has arrived. From a team that had very little national credibility to a team that might have been ranked next year.

Guess what, we might have lost all that due to one of them scratch your head moments.

I guess you could say that it is a good thing that the MWC and BW deal is a done deal. I wouldn’t want to think of what would have happen if everything wasn’t a done deal by now. Man that would have sucked.

  304. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 26, 2010 12:47 am

Athletic department expenses at any public university are paid from ticket sales; advertising sales & in-kind equipment & uniform donations; special event booster club fundraisers such as concerts, fun runs, dinners, & silent auctions; alumni drives; personal solicitations; bequests; earned interest on endowment funds; dedicated fees paid at registration by students; unsolicited donations; tv conracts, logo royalty payments, concession & parking fees; and legislative allocations paid from taxes – not necessarily in that order.

Jim Donovan has a MASSIVE job to raise funds to support all sports. We must accept the fact that it is our job as fans and supporters to do whatever we can to financially support his efforts.

If every third person who buys a season ticket in any sport were to donate just $25 a year to each sport s/he supports in addition to the tickets – approximately 50,000 season tickets in six sports all totaled – that would generate about $4,500,000 a year. Then add in all other other revenues/donations and that would more than cover all of the Department of Athletics’ expenses plus reduce the deficit within five years.

Once the word gets out, other season ticket buyers would join in on the pledge drive PLUS new ticketholders would also start generating even more revenues.

We’re talking a major chunk of change here – even though the cost to most folks here individually would be one cheap lunch at McBurgerBox every couple of weeks.

For those of you who only support football, that’s about 50 cents a week. Can you afford it?

In my case, doing this would cost me about $3.75 a week for six ticketed sports along with an annual donation of $25 to the softball program. I can pick up that money in the form of inappropriately discarded HI-5 containers over a year’s time.

Why not generate a pilot pledge drive right here. Surely, all of us can afford to pay this manini amount.

BTW – Mucho Mahalo to Ala Wai for listing the top 101-highest paid coaches. It never occurred to me that McMackin was right in the middle.

I don’t think we should get rid of Mack at this point…

However the following coaches would be my choices if we ever did need a new one and they were interested, which they wouldn’t haha.

Mike Riley, OSU (we get Cav back! +++++)

    Jim Harbaugh, Stan

    Mike Stoops, UArizona

    Bill Stewart, WV

Kama Krab. My faith is in Ke Akua. My support goes to those whom I see who are endeavoring to serve as teachers to our children. When those teachers are performing this service, they are, in effect, making their work an act of worship. Add to that the balanced approach to train not only the body and the mind, but also awaken the hearta to the benefits of team success over self aggrandizement, then we have something really special.

Winning is a result of successful learning. And losing is part of the learning proxess. I see all as good in the grand scheme of things.

What I do NOT want to see are people so fixated on winning that they lose the big picture. This is happening in the NFL and is not a good example for the way to run a college progran. Look where the Redskins might be if they had developed Colt. The Cardinals and the Cowboys played their outstanding young QBs last night to a thrilling conclusion.

The Skins are going through coaches and players through the seive of their organization because they are fixated on the material side of the game- ignoring people who have hearts and souls into their franchise and dumping them like so much baggage.

Let us not accept that model. It is short-sighted and a waste in every way.

When the kids grow up and see what the coaches are teaching them… And believe in something greater than themselves that allows them to become greater than themselves, they will experience the W. And it will be special.

Graphic novels might be the expression at existing employed to refer to reprints of comic strips, such as within the scenario using the good-looking two-volume compilation using the total run of Calvin and Hobbes. As a result, just like a comic book can most successful be acknowledged by its similarity having a magazine, with staples within the spine and fairly few of pages, graphic novel now refers having a square-bound comic of any measurement, with distinctive content material content or not. 382. ghd curling irons January 12, 2011 2:57 pm

Count me as one more person surpr ised you did notinclude pepsi around the ??worst??? l ist and even acknowledge their redesign.Other precise comments. The new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace approximately the wordmark is uneven. I just like the notion, but the execution is bad. The aged 1 is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like superior in regards to the new Guitar Hero logo. The negative area between the letters can make it virtually not possible to examine for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it in any way. The line breaks appear completely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the word pollywogs??? on two lines, which has a hyphen?- ugh). Finally, I’d really like to view your l ist of Identities which have been in desperate need of a redesign. My #1 select will be Verizon.

  390. GHDS January 13, 2011 1:34 am

Syfy hate it or not it can be a a quality typeface remedy.. the NYPL logo is wonderful, and I dig the the new pfizer mark. AOL is left to be viewed as to if it is a finest mark. I assume a single or two in the worst marks from the year had been notnearly that unhealthy. I d isagree with Kraft I kinda dig that and msn.

  392. adobe photoshop cs 8 January 13, 2011 4:07 am

Like other commenters, I just ca notget on board together with your argument for Aol. Sorry. Maybe there exists a v ision there, but in contrast the rest of th is 12 months is crop, it fully fails to capture a cohesive brand essence.

  393. north face fleece January 13, 2011 5:23 am

Maybe a lot of the commentors common d istaste for Aol is stemming from an overlooking of your brands romantic relationship on the web. A synergetic and harmonious 1st in my opinion.

  396. moncler shop online January 13, 2011 4:06 pm

would you mind articulating a handful of individuals things you love?

  397. you baby can read January 13, 2011 4:12 pm

I’ve to say that I agree together with the sentiments about getting AOL as number 1. The comments posted along aspect it sum it up nicely, that it does nothing to strengthen the brand, but only adds confusion.Out of the top rebrands while in the l ist, I’d set SyFy at the best. In the beginning I hated the identify, mainly because I thought they did it ??just since,??? when in fact they’d to alter their name resulting from being unable to legally use Sci-fi.??? Now rather than coming up that has a whole new name that no one would know- and maybe shed a good deal on the previously inbuilt SciFi??? brand- they stuck with the aged title with a bit of word play. I can even now call SyFy Sci-fi when it arrives up, and that would make me joyful.

  398. coach purse January 13, 2011 4:23 pm

Unquestionably a questionable l ist.The two Aol and Nickelodeon do notdeserve to be in the best redesigns,in my opinion.Selection 1 redesign must be the Metropolis of Melbourne logo.

  399. North Face Shop January 13, 2011 5:34 pm

Undoubtedly a questionable l ist. Each Aol and Nickelodeon do notdeserve to be in the greatest redesigns,in my opinion.Range one redesign would have to be the City of Melbourne logo.

If you examine it, what do you’re feeling?I see a hell of a lot of unplugged ethernet cables puking across my monitor.I believe that you meant to use precisely the same description for equally the eight worst as well as the range a single new identity

It is extremely helpful for me. Big thumb up for this perspective!

I am really happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to it.

I watch the news daily, sometimes all day if I can. It does affect my mood too, now that you mention it. I would probably be much happier ignoring the fact that our President has just about started world war three with his ignorance. I don’t know what’s better. Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
