Salas, Paredes, Silva named All-WAC 1st team

Slotback Greg Salas, linebacker Corey Paredes and safety Mana Silva were named to the All-WAC first team.

Quarterback Bryant Moniz, slotback Kealoha Pilares, running back Alex Green, right tackle Laupepa Letuli, right guard Adrian Thomas, defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu, and kicker Scott Enos named to second team.

Who got robbed? Greg McMackin should have been Coach of the Year. Jeramy Bryant should have been second-team cornerback. Pilares probably should have been on the first team.

Oh, well, congrats to all.

boy, I can’t believe the difference in how I feel today than how I felt back in August.

Good job, Coach Mack and crew. Good Good Good Job!

Ditto this remark. McMackin has done a much better job in his third year. IMO, making the OC and DC changes along with bringing back Mouse Davis and being less of a micromanager were his most important decisions as head coach. As a result, this years squad has more than exceeded what they were expected to achieve and I congratulate them on a job well done.

As far as Aloha Stadium goes, yes, it has gotten ghetto and has been neglected in terms of upkeep in a few areas but in all fairness, so do many older iconic stadiums on the continent which haven’t undergone extensive renovations. For example, UC Berkeley’s Memorial isn’t exactly a spring chicken but will be seeing a much needed facelift/retrofit (for earthquake hardening) and the last time I attended an event at the Rose Bowl (the BCS National Championship game a few years ago), I recall the crappy restrooms, the oh so “comfortable” and narrow aluminum bench seats, the narrow concourses and tunnels.

Finally, as far as the whole conference realignment thing, didn’t really expect Hawaii to even receive consideration by the MWC given their previous and most recent overtures of thanks but no thanks even when subsidies were put in the table. While the success of this years team may have been a factor, the success and support built up over the previous decades also played a role as part of the MWC reestablishing a solid western footing amidst the ongoing changes. Without a history of having a competitive product on the field, it would have been easy for us to have been overlooked. So kudos to Holmes, Tomey and Wagner for laying the initial ground work with their winning and competitive teams, to Jones for having the foresight to position UH football for the next round of changes (which occurred this past summer) by taking the program to the next level, and to McMackin for finally getting the program back on track after Jones abrupt departure. Just need to continuing improving going forward.

Congratulations Bryant on a well deserved MVP award!

    recruiting announcements…

mack did say he received three commitments this weekend.

    the little birdie reports that…

keep your eyes wide opened and your ears peeled back as word about who committed from this weekend’s visitors are unveiled this week and yah it could be more than three.

my what wonders exist out there when your team solidifies it’s future with a mwc conference invitation (it’s a done deal). coupled with a top 25 regular season finish.

    Good morning, Everybody!

Gratz to Moniz on Team MVP!

Good looking bunch of peeps in these pictures! Wow! Look at those involved with the T-Gates! Wish I were in those pictures!!! One of these days!

Sorry I was off early last night. Comcast lost connection with everyone in our area. Funny, they don’t ever give us refunds when they screw up, but if we’re ever late on our bill by a single day, we surely pay for it!

Congrats to Moniz and the ALL the seniors! EVERYONE contributes on a team – and we appreciate all your efforts on and off the field.

And congrats to the team as a whole, coaches and players, for ranking #24 IN THE BCS!!!

What the heck, we should just offer Viliami Moala a scholarship.

  20. Pride. December 6, 2010 3:34 am

Will someone please tell Jesse Williams that he will be one of seventeen defensive tackles on the 2011 alabama roster. Besides having fourteen defensive tackles returning from this year’s squad, they already have commitments from three more defensive tackles.

He still has a lot to learn about playing American football, he is not ready yet for division one ball. He should come to Hawaii and redshirt in 2011, then get into the rotation in 2012 and 2013.

  21. Pride. December 6, 2010 3:45 am

The 2012 season will be very interesting. Without counting any redshirts, our 2010 sophomore class has the following at their respective positions:

    0 – QB’s

    0 – RB’s

    1 – Slot Receiver

    0 – Wide Receiver

    0 – Linebackers

Hopefully we have a few redshirts to shore up that discrepancy. Or we will need to have underclassmen grow up real fast and be able to play right away.

  22. NYUH December 6, 2010 3:54 am

His future is so bright he has to wear shades.

Still hope they organize something like this. Maybe invite two other schools – Montana? Portland State?

    Mountain

    Air Force

    Boise State

    Colorado State

    Nevada

    Wyoming

    Pacific

    Hawaii 7-1

    Fresno State

    San Diego State

    New Mexico

    UNLV

  23. Pride. December 6, 2010 3:58 am

While looking at the list of seniors on this year’s squad, I think it’s interesting to note the three transfers from Oregon State. Lolotai, Silva, and LaCount. While I will not say anything negative about another college football program, one still has to wonder why three local boys would transfer back to Hawaii from a Pac 10 football program.

The same can be said for Kaniela Tuipulotu transferring back to Hawaii from Arizona. At about the same time, former Crusader Scot Smith transferred away from Arizona also to a JC. Again, not saying anything negative about another college football program. Just something for local kids to consider when college scouts paint a pie in the sky picture to the Hawaii kids who thnk that the grass is greener on the other side.

  24. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:07 am

While I love winning football games and league championships, I think there is one thing that prospective recruits need to look at when examining the Hawaii football program. The Hawaii coaches have done an absolutely incredible job getting our players through school and to graduation. I have never before seen the success rate that we see today with football players graduating with their degrees. That, in my opinion is the greatest trait of Coach Mac’s football program. That trait needs to be elevated and held up for all prospective recruits and their parents to see, when considering a place to spend the next few years of their lives.

Great job by the Warrior players and coaches.

  25. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:12 am

I could picture Marcus Mariota as a 6-4 225 pound slot receiver in the year 2016, threatening to break all of Greg Salas’ career receiving records.

  26. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:14 am

I can also picture Chester Sua putting together multiple thousand yard seasons with the Warriors wide open offense.

  27. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:16 am

Can you imagine Juda Parker and Beau Yap racing to the quarterback from different sides, competing to see who will get there first?

  28. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:19 am

Can you imagine Kamehameha’s Koa Ka’ai underthe guidance of Tommy Heffernan in the off-season and Tony Tuioti during the season. He would be a 6-4 285 pound behemoth wrecking havoc up and down the Mountain West conference.

  29. NYUH December 6, 2010 4:32 am

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=dw-playoff120610&utm_source=bleacherreport.com

A good example of why I don’t support a playoff, except maybe between the top 4 ranked teams.

  30. RIKanaka December 6, 2010 4:33 am

Pride, the grass is most definitely greener in Oregon. It rains from November through April, continuously. No can see da sun for 6 months solid. A$$ why dey come home. Grass definitely not greener in AZ (cactus is, though).

  31. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:34 am

I can see Hawaii lining up a defense with names like K.T. Tuumalo, Na’Alii Robins, Tigi Hill, Starr Sua-Passi, Koa Ka’ai, Juda Parker, and Ben Mamea. Yup, punch you in the mouth kind of guys if you ask me.

  32. NYUH December 6, 2010 4:35 am

Pride: Yes, the power at the DL has got to be one of the most pleasant surprises of the season.

  33. Kekoa December 6, 2010 4:37 am

Pride ~ I can see more talented players yearning to show us what they have to offer. The inspiration award lives in the heart of every Warrior who straps on the UH colors.

It’s at testimonial events like last night, that feeds the fire in the belly of the beast. It’ll smolder after the Hawaii Bowl, thru Spring drills, and resurface in the Fall. Get ready to see more records fall as the Warriors roll on!

  34. Midnight December 6, 2010 4:43 am

    Hi ya Pride,

Congratulations to the Warriors for a wonderful season! Next is the winning of the Aloha Bowl against Tulsa!

Pride: Isn’t it time for bed yet? 845am here in Arlington, TX and the temperature is 33 degrees. We probably will have a high of 65 or so today…..

Good morning to all the Tsaikos in Hawaii and elsewhere!! Get well Liz!

Nice pictures, ST, especially of the peeps, and UHfan808!

  35. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:45 am

I don’t know though RIKanaka. I think that Corvalis might be comfortable than South Bend? But Honolulu more comfortable than both.

  36. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:45 am

#34 – Stay at work already.

  37. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:47 am

Have a feeling we will finally see the best of the best in wide receivers wanting to see what kind of numbers they can put up in Hawaii’s offense. It’s important that we find a way to lock-up the architect of that offense.

  38. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:54 am

There’s always the argument from local families about wanting their young men to experience life on the mainland, so that their sons can grow up.

I understand that argument. However, I don’t understand why a young man cannot grow up away from his family at the dorms. I also don’t understand why a young man cannot first experience playing for his home, his state, his family, and his friends first. After he graduates form UH, he can go with a degree in hand and work anywhere on the mainland, if he wants to experience life away from the islands. He can get a job. He can go the OCS route and become a military officer with his degree. If that were the case, he may end up live all over the world.

  39. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:59 am

Another thing that I don’t get is local kids wanting to grow up, leaving Honolulu to go and experience life in the big city.

The big city? Tucson? Pullman? Corvalis? Provo? Las Cruces? Eugene? Moscow? South Bend? Boise?

  40. Kekoa December 6, 2010 5:20 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Congrats to Warriors on a great season, especially all the awardees. One more game this season.

Do we play 12 or 13 games next year? If no B$U, then that’s one less home game (and 1 less t-gate 😀 ).

  45. d1島 December 6, 2010 6:35 am

    Great Morning All!

Congratulations to all the award winners from last night.

Back to work for most of us. What’s the plan for the Warriors?

    HiHo….

  46. Pride. December 6, 2010 6:44 am

One senior that didn’t get an award last night but had a great season was Kamalu Umu. If I recall correctly he caused at least two fumbles and recovered another. One of those caused fumbles helped us to beat Army. That was a huge turnover.

By the way, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. They seemed to go our way this year. Great job by all.

Injuries. Last year we were on the wrong side of that problem. This year seemed to be a lot better. Possibly the strength coaches might have had something to do with that.

  54. Buffoman December 6, 2010 7:18 am

I too believe that the coach did the right thing by letting his capable assistant coaches make the calls. The offense and defense really came through. I am still not convinced that the special teams were up to the same level of improvement and excellence. If someone did the stats, I’d like to see how we fared with returns (and ball placements) beyond the 35 and how many resulted in scores, particularly in the games we lost and could have been in a better position to have won.

I am quite proud of the fact that we had such great chemistry on the team. It shows that the players are of great character.

  55. Hilo Moon December 6, 2010 7:21 am

Something that bothers me ( and maybe it’s only me ) is that TEAM MEMBERS who only practice, like the scout team, have to sit in the stands. I suppose there are many reasons for not allowing those dedicated PLAYERS not to do so. However, wouldn’t it be a nice gesture of gratitude to these valuable TEAM MEMBERS, to honor them by allowing them on the field to watch the last game and more importantly to be recognized. They deserve the thanks and aloha from the fans and the university.

  56. Hank December 6, 2010 7:22 am

#47 Pride…i agree. Kamalu led the team in TFL’s and was consistent the whole year…i’m with you on giving him props for recognition deserved…i.e., without his tackle and forced fumble against Army – i don’t know if we pull that game out.

  57. Pomai December 6, 2010 7:26 am

#58 – I’m probably rooting for Hawaii. I’ll let you know when I make a definitive decision.

  60. Pride. December 6, 2010 7:52 am

    #58

Navy – Cheering for all of the Hawaii boys on Navy’s team.

Utah – Again, cheering for all da local boys playing for Utah.

Louisville – Oldtime friends, Albert Ma’afala and U’i Borges’ son Abu Ma’afala is a grad assistant at Louisville.

Ohio – Tons of my immediate family live in Cincinnati.

Fresno State – In honor of former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney who spent so much time golfing on Maui over the years, that he spoke true pidgin just like a kama’aina. Gave Waianae product Kepa Ka’aekuahiwi a coaching position when Kepa was done playing in the early eighties.

BYU – One of the all-time good guys in this world, Robert Anae is the offensive coordinator at BYU. Yes I kow that we love to hate BYU, but blood is blood.

#47 – Agreed. Kamalu Umu, while not recognized, was also an exciting key player (and it’s really hard to say “key” on this very talented team). I always was looking to see his number on the field.

  72. Michigan Warrior December 6, 2010 8:15 am

With so many coaching jobs opening up at the end of this season, I hope we can keep our staff together. Anyone see that short segment during halftime of our UNLV game, about longevity and loyalty as coaches/assistant coaches at several schools? Amazing how certain coaching teams have spent 30+ years together as a solid unit. Talk about continuity!

While I understand the desire for most to eventually land a HC job, I find it admirable that there are coaches around who believe in loyalty and keeping a winning combination together. I’m sure those assistants are taken care of with bonuses and what not.

It was just a really good segment to have seen, since we usually keep assistant/position coaches for just a couple of years before they move on.

  73. Souljah December 6, 2010 8:15 am

Did anyone post that we offered Rashaan Vaughn?

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Love all the constructive input on the blog today!

In a time where NFL coaches are walking through revolving doors like free agents, I hope UH sees that what we have here is a dynasty-making team of coaches that elevates college athletics to another level- and Coach Mack’s vision of Scholar Athlete is something very special indeed.

To the benefit of The State of Hawai in every way- GO WARRIORS!

  76. greenthumb December 6, 2010 8:29 am

#69 Shoko, thank you for the interactive link. Interesting to see how the votes fell, not only for us but also the BCS gamesmanship.

  77. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2010 8:29 am

Amidst all the Championship honors, school and national records this team has accrued, the greatest legacy these Warriors leave will be respect and credibility within our state and on a national scale.

Coach Mack and his coaches and players have walked the program out of JJ’s large shadow and have affirmed the Warriors place as one of the top programs in the country during this last decade.

We should be a top tier team in the MWC, and we can thank this team for setting that stage. By their commitment, dedication and hard work they have helped change a future in college football that was fraught with uncertainty only a couple of months ago, to one which is filled with promise and great possibilities..

We have been privileged as fans to see spectacular play from the Warriors this season, and thanks to them, we will also be looking at good times for years to come.

A big mahalo to everyone involved for a tremendous season!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  80. papajoe2 December 6, 2010 9:03 am

Heard over the radio after the game. Moniz said he didn’t run for a touchdown, but threw a pass instead, headed towards the Diamond Head goal, when he looked like he was wide open for a run because he wanted the senior that he threw to, to get a touchdown in his final regular season game at Aloha Stadium. He wanted to honor all the seniors. Too bad it wasn’t completed, but I guess its one of the reasons why he won the team’s MVP. Wouldn’t you like to play with that kind of guy and on that kind of team where they look out for one another?

  81. Slugger December 6, 2010 9:05 am

#69… Shoko… Interesting to see how “regionally” these coaches voted.

Those that didn’t vote for Hawaii, but did vote for unranked teams:

Frank Beamer – Virginia Tech (ACC) – voted unranked Maryland #24

Tim Beckman – Toledo (MAC) – Northern Illinois #25

Dan Enos – Central Michigan (MAC) – UConn #25

    Jim Harbaugh – Stanford (PAC12) – Maryland #24, UConn #25

    Mike Haywood – Miami(Ohio) (MAC) – Maryland #23, UConn #24

  86. Shoko December 6, 2010 9:18 am

GT, you’re welcome. I found it interesting as well. Especially, as MW mentioned, the disparity in regional coach votes. No one seems to follow Warrior football on the east coast, or they just don’t agree that UH should be top 25. But then again, its not the coaches that crunch stats and follow all 120 teams, its the school’s sports information analyst that take the time.

Look forward to making my first Warrior game in person. See you guys there!

  87. Old Diver December 6, 2010 9:21 am

Gotta feel great about Ault being coach of the year. Great personality, very likable, was able to inspire fans to filled their stadium, great attitude even after a loss, never made excuses, husband of the year, never kicked a dog. helps old women cross the street and beat the crap out of the UH Warrior football team at Aloha Stadium this year. :O

  97. Do you remember how upset some people both here and in the larger sports community were at Coach Mack’s being hired in early 2008? By the end of the 2008 season, they were calling for his head on a platter.

Things did not get much better last year.

Now he’s not only everyone’s Sweet Potato but also he’s being labeled a genius for having done this, that or the other.

Just before the start of that first season, I wrote a post about how this situation is no different than any other organization when a new leader comes on board. It doesn’t make any difference what the business or the non-profit does: The first year the new person is at the top of the pole, s/he is essentially having to deal with whatever his predecessor did or didn’t do.

Towards the end of the first year on the job, there will definitely be changes in personnel as well as product or outcome, but the second is the transitional year in which a lot of “testing” goes on – and, yes, there will be mistakes made.

However, by the end of the second year on the job – and, in this case, we’re talking about not just the 2009 season but also the recruits and the coaching staff Mcmackin picked for years three and beyond.

The third year is fully owned the top person. Yes, there are still people on staff or on the team who were around three years ago, but all kinds of changes have been made.

This year Coach Mack proved that he has the leadership and the capability to continue on. Congratulations – and let’s give the same support to our other new coaches as well the ones who’ve done well over the years.

CHANGE OF SUBJECT: Will be asking a question or two to certain individuals at one of the upcoming T-Events about their directed hostility & antipathy.

  98. Souljah December 6, 2010 9:43 am

    1. What’s this with Ault? “Ault, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, is in his third stint with the Wolf Pack” (and gotta be a joke in there somewhere — counting on you guys to figure it out).

    2. Why did they list the first team WRs that way? It’s not alphabetical by first or last name, it’s not by class standing. Best for last?

    The “quiet” receiver assassin…

Quiet because some people never knew he existed on the field.

Hardy-Tuliau did all his talking in his tackles and with his football IQ/instincts to be in the right place at the right time. It wasn’t just one play or two, but his CONSISTENT performance that kept him in the line up.

We got a good one in Hardy-Tuliau!!!

  115. Michigan Warrior December 6, 2010 10:07 am

    #97… Al… That’s some ugly selections!

Corey Paredes actually made the most tackles(144) out of all WAC defenders.

Utah State’s Bobby Wagner was second with 133, but a higher tackles-per-game average.

Reno’s Dontay Moch had more Tackles-for-Loss(22), than Chris Carter(16.5), whom, by the way, we shut down until the very end of the game. Carter had a grand total of 2 solo tackles against us!

I dislike Ault very much, but yes… I can see how he got voted as he was the EASY one to vote for considering Petersen and BSU underachieved while Nevada “over-achieved”, but COMMON SENSE says they did EXACTLY AS THEY WERE EXPECTED!!!!!!!!

Coach Mack and Co. did the OPPOSITE of what they were expected to do and MORE!!!!!!!!!

Common sense often NEVER prevails in UH’s favor with regards to individual awards.

So the team’s coach that everybody thought was going to be #2 in the WAC and ended up #1 is coach of the year, but the coach that everybody thought was going to be #6 (can’t remember) and ended up #1 is not coach of the year. Yeah that makes sense. Maybe coach Mack can get most improved coach of the year, for letting Rolo and Rich do their thing.

    RE: Senior Night

The spirit of college athletics DIED a long time ago and to keep up with the rest of the world and to avoid disappearing and falling FURTHER behind than we already are in some cases (facility management, booster support, insitutional support, overall fan support, etc..) some “evils” are necessary. No matter how much people can’t stand the advertisement banners or announcments, who else is going to pay the bills? If UH wants to get paid, there are some things that has to be done. $10,000,000.00 in the hole… UH athletics is not in a position to ask for sponsorship dollars and get 100% of their own way at the same time…

Sad to say that the reality of our situation is that we do not live in fantasy land where simple good gestures and good will without monetary donations and compensation are not needed to survive.

We should just be glad that our local STAMP on most things remain. NO ONE IN THE COUNTRY SENDS OF OUR SENIORS LIKE HAWAII DOES.

The leis, the extended ceremonies for ALL sports, the immediate and extended ohana on the field/court with the rest of the team, it’s a big deal and a big presentation and the senior student-athletes deserve the spotlight.

No one complains about the length of the senior night ceremonies for the other spectator sports, but then again those other sports will never have 20+ or 30+ seniors to honor. So yes, in that, it would be “nice” if some accomodations and adjustments need to be negotiatied to allow a smoother and more comfortable process for Warrior football, but in the end, the dollars count.

Success is not free and cannot be found on gumdrop lane in the chocolate neighborhoods of Mele and Mo’olelo.

The proof is with Alabama, Florida, Texas, etc… The very same programs most people wish to compare UH to.

This team has resilience and knows not to get down on themselves but to work towards improvement and self-correction.

Congrats to the Warriors for a “10” season.

Congrats to all the honorees at the Awards Banquet.

Congratulations to all the graduates and soon-to-be graduates.

    Job well done.

Got the Bowl game against another team with only three losses. A team that loves to run the no-huddle. So, I guess, your final exam question for the semester really is:

How do you stop the “no-huddle”?

Kind of fitting our season will end with this daunting question huh?

It’s like those cliché boxing or fighting movies where a fighter has a weakness of sorts, but preservers throughout most of the movie UNTIL he finds out to win the big prize, he must face his weakness outright.

We have three weeks to figure this one out.

#112 – Thanks for the support and suggestion NSF. I am just one of many football alumni who care very much for our football team. Besides, I wouild have a very difficult time leaving my day job.

I do know a few guys that may fit into that category of having been there and done that, as Warrirors. David Maeva is one that comes to mind that has the knowledge, the background, the passion, and the desire to be either a recruiter, or position coach. That passion that he has is captivating and engaging. Mento is the type of guy that has the charisma that naturally draws people toward him. He also has many contacts all over the mainland that he developed while playing Canadian Football. He would be a great recruiter for the Warriors.

There are many others that fit into that category though, as a matter of fact one of them is already on the job in coach Lumpkin.

Speaking of a couple of hunred thou (that was prolly laundered through the church), we should start the Heisman campaign for Moniz in 2011 NOW!! Its been said that UH qbs are system qbs but seems like most everyone is using that system with 1 in the backfield and 4 receivers, INCLUDING in NFL. UH just does it better than the rest. We should also incorporate the no huddle offense so the other team cannot substitute on defense. With their pass defense schemes, and cannot substitute, then we run the ball for a big gain or 1st down.

    NSF,

For softball, volleyball, baseball, and basketball senior ceremonies no one really leaves except for a few because they can sit through 5-8 seniors being honored. 20-30 is too long considering the process they currently use.

The ceremony itself, I have no problem with and I think most can agree when they look at it, it’s the fact that football has so many that the people in charge need to make adjustments to how it’s done to accommodate the quantity involved.

A compromise needs to be reached.

Robbed??? Steph, Pilares missed Boise game and these votes are based on “Conference” play.

There is no way Pilares has a better WAC season than Pettis or Young.

Biggest 1st team snub was billy winn on 2nd team.

And you have to give Ault the coach of the year after coming up with a way to take Boise down.

133, One thing that helps is keeping the ball and using the clock and sustaining drives.

SMU held Tulsa to 18. That is the key.

Tulsa’s defense is nowhere near its offense, so we should be able to sustain clock killing drives against them.

  150. Pomai December 6, 2010 11:11 am

  151. Manoa December 6, 2010 11:14 am

SMU’s last play of the drive iced the game. They started with 6 minutes and 45 seconds on the clock and ran the clock down to zero and the end of the game– kinda like JJ did to Boise in 2007 when we ran off a total of 8 minutes 30 seconds running out the clock with a lot of carries by Pilares and Farmer.

  183. al December 6, 2010 11:53 am

pride. #162. that seems to be an ongoing debate at our household, too. i keep telling #2 that la count if he really busts his okole to get the right measurables for the combine (just so that he can be recognized) that he could easily land on someone’s free agent list of invitees.

he was a much storied jc prospect who ran aground during the transition between jc and here. but, has now straightened it out. his potential is as huge as his size, feet, and arm length.

i also believe that most or all of our olineman this year have the potential and film to warrant a look see. adrian thomas for sure with pepa. i also like ginlack. and how can you leave out tiwanak.

    but, i am just saying.

Coach of the Year Ault because his team had the same WAC record as Boise and Hawaii. But his team defeated a highly ranked Boise team which hardly anyone gave Nevada a chance to win. Hawaii defeated a Nevada team which was not as highly ranked as Boise and Hawaii was blown out by Boise which it should not have been.

Michigan, Boise St is a running team and they sit their starters in the 4th quarter.

If you ask coaches who is it harder to game plan against, all would say Pettis and Young over Pilares. As will the NFL Draft coming up.

As much as I like Pilares, Pettis and Young give DBs a lot more trouble then Pilares. Im sure him being hurt against Boise had a lot to do with it too.

  190. Michigan Warrior December 6, 2010 11:57 am

#146… Jeezy33… Here’s another for you (if the one above isn’t clear enough)…

National Rank/ Name(Number of Games Played)/ Receiving Yards Per Game

    2. Greg Salas(13) – 128.85

    5. Kealoha Pilares(12) – 108.83

    ~~~
    10. Titus Young(12) – 95.92
    55. Austin Pettis(12) – 67.00
    How about Total Receiving Yards?…
    1. Greg Salas – 1675
    6. kealoha Pilares – 1306
    ~~~

    11. Titus Young – 1151

    55. Austin Pettis – 804

    RIKanaka:

Jim Donovan mentioned going back to West Point in 2014 – an early season game tied in with another making it a back-to-back trip for Hawaii residents.

I suggested Navy since the team is already on the East Coast and short, easy drive to a major city near Annapolis, but no response. Maybe, he will do the Colorado schedule again. If so, hope Coach Mack keeps the team in Denver.

  194. Michigan Warrior December 6, 2010 12:03 pm

#190… So what if Boise is a running team? We’re talking about receivers and receiving production. In the RnS, if our receivers sucked, our team wouldn’t score. Then, by your logic, Alex Green should’ve been the RB of the Year, since he ran for nearly 1200 yards so far, at a nation-leading 8.78 yards per carry. Far better than Vai Taua’s 5.85 per carry.

Nice try on the sitting out bit, but Hawaii’s first team receivers also sit out the end of most games.

  195. Michigan Warrior December 6, 2010 12:10 pm

    Fresno’s (#31Scoring)Kevin Goessling’s Stats: XP 40/42; FG 20/24; 100 Points Scored.

Warriors need their own no-huddle … and a bunch of quick strike, passing patterns… plays that are executed out within 2-3 seconds following the snap. The idea is to help build rhythm and to dissuade any defense from blitzing. These could be conventional slant or drag patterns, as well as, quick flag patterns where the throw is to the outside shoulders of the receivers at the sidelines.

If the opposition wants to wear down our defense.. our offense needs to counter by wearing down their defense, too.

If they won the WAC title, there would ahve been no way he didn’t get WACCOTY. We tend to look at the accomplishments short of total success as… “par for the course”….

Coach Mac on the other hand took a team that was not expected to contend and got them to play as champions and win a championship. To me that’s the difference between the three coaches.

Expectations go either way…expect to win and you don’t then….

NSF – Sorry I think Petersen should have got it, ranked in the top 10 all season, plus I think his past years should count a little to, I have no love for BSu, but I do respect them and Petersen for what they have done for the last few years. Now the big question is can Mack repeat or better this years performance?

  237. RedZone December 6, 2010 1:04 pm

Boise has the best program. I just need to see a coaching change to really determine how good Peterson is.

  240. chawan_cut December 6, 2010 1:05 pm

Ault coach of the year? For 2 FG misses??? really? he should give the award to brotzman.

if he has a successful year without his 2 forever starters in kapernick and taua, then he should win it next year. that’ll be a challenge i’ll love to see. anyone know who nevada’s backup is? or boise’s for that matter?

i say kellen moore is gone after this year. what’s the chances he has the statistical year he had this year next? he might fall victim to the (nfl conspiracy) negativity that doomed colt.

    btw, i hate cameras… heh.

  252. Pomai December 6, 2010 1:15 pm

NSF Petersen – They had the X on their backs from day one, they were expected to finish in the top 10 or higher, anything less would have been unacceptable. On the other hand Mack had nothing to lose, no expectations other than the fans crying for his head. I would imagine it would be harder to keep a team playing their A game week in and week out when they have won the way they did.

  253. RedZone December 6, 2010 1:17 pm

I do not like Tulsa’s defense. They are very physical and will try to knock Moniz out of the game early. It is what they did to the Notre Dame qb. They also go after the head of the qb and for some reason did not get called for it in that game. Notre Dame also had a hard time running against this defense. I think the key will be the play of our slots. Toma playing slot for Notre Dame killed them and I think our slots are way better. They just need to protect themselves from these players who will lead with their helmets when they tackle.

  254. RedZone December 6, 2010 1:18 pm

Also, let’s play a game of “Who Said That?” with regards to this comment:

“We’re excited that we’ve been extended the opportunity to play in the Armed Forces Bowl game. I have been a big promoter of trying to play as many service academies as we can, not here at SMU, but also when I was in Hawaii. We’re really excited to be able to play my good friend Rich Ellerson, who has done an unbelievable job. I know his mind isn’t really on it right now, but he will be excited, I know, to play. They should have beaten the University of Hawaii earlier in the year. Had they not fumbled the ball, they would have had another win in their category. I’m sure they’ll like to play against our offense again.”

I guess we *SHOULD* have lost to SJSU at San Jose in 2007 too right?

Michigan, its not always about stats.

The coaches felt like it was harder to cover and stop Pettis and Young over Pilares.

With Alex Green, he had a great season but when 327 yards come in 1 game against the worst team in the league, you cant put too much emphasis in that. Also his big run against Boise came once we were down 30+ points.

If Pilares were healthy against Boise and made some big plays against them, I’m sure he might have gotten consideration.

But I think any coach in the country would agree it is harder to cover Young and Pettis versus Pilares. Which is why both will be drafted in top 4 rounds.

Not trying to knock Pilares. Those 2 are just very good

  286. jm2375 December 6, 2010 2:32 pm

No make excuses for the students not showing up to the game. This is *NOT* finals week, it’s the last week of classes! Finals is next week and graduation is Dec 18!

  287. Derek December 6, 2010 2:36 pm

With Boise St. leaving next year, Jim Donovan has to find another team to schedule of get back to 13. I wonder what he’s going to do. If we already have a FCS team, then he needs to get a FBS team. At this late juncture, what can he get? Can we play Boise as a non-conference foe for next year?

Al, I saw the N. Carolina commit. The amazing part is that he changing directions really well and he runs away from defensive backs. The guy has some kind of acceleration. I guess he doesn’t want to be tackled or caught from behind. I hope we can get him. Cross our fingers. I also think we need some true freshmen receivers in the program. Salas was in the program for 5 years, and he reshirted the first year. Pilares was in the program 4 years.

That kind of stability for 4 years is huge in terms of continuity and resulted in a great season this year.

There is no secret to this year’s success. 1) turnover ratio 2) no major injuries or key injuries

    3) offense, defense, and special teams all were better compared to 2009. I think we will have another good season next year and should contend for the championship. Moniz and Andrew Manley are the only starting QBs returning among all the other WAC teams. Moore is gone to the Mountain West. We need to find 4 starters on the OL and 4 starters in the secondary, and 3 starting receivers. Lefiti will be back, Brett Leonard will be back, some younger guys need to step up like Lefotu, Shigematsu, Loyd, Winchester, Sapoulu, etc. Torres will lead the secondary and Walker, Hardy-Tuliau, Estes, Maggitt, Ornellas, Christian, Sellers, McBride, etc. will compete for starting positions. Darius Bright should be one of the slots or wide out. Pollard will be back. Stutzman, Ostrowski, Sampson, Terrance Bell, etc. will be in the mix. I think we will have a good team next year. The worry is 2012. We will lose a ton of experience after next year and the young guys have to grow, mature, get stronger, bigger, etc. and get playing experience. After next year, we lose Moniz and Austin. The most important position in the future is to find the next great QB in the program.

I hope the coaches are mapping out the future because the new conference in the MWC will be a lot more competitive and tougher.

  288. Pride. December 6, 2010 2:40 pm

My have things changed around here. I remember back in 1981 when Hawaii was 7 and 0 and getting ready to play a nationally televised game against the Jim McMahon and Kyle Whittingham lead BYU Cougars. Hawaii was 17th and 19th in the top twenty polls for that week. The town of Honolulu was going nuts with the idea of Hawaii being ranked nationally. The bubble burst with a tough loss to BYU, and the Rainbows ended up with a 9 and 2 record and no bowl game that season.

The program has changed since then. Now we are kind of ho hum about the top 25 ranking, happy but not yet satisfied. We expect more now and demand more as fans and supporters. The Hawaii Bowl is great, but everyone knows that we’ve been to the Sugar Bowl before, and won’t be satified until we get to a BCS bowl game again.

The bar is set higher now.

  289. Pomai December 6, 2010 2:44 pm

Don’t know why but this just jump in my brain, Alex Green should be first team on any team, the guy had over a 1000 yards rushing in a R&S offense which has and always will be more shoot than run. I wish we had him for another year.

  316. WarriorMojo December 6, 2010 3:33 pm

Wow, you guys talking about the O-Line and don’t invite me? I think LaCount pretty much has a prototype physique to play OT and I thought he did well once he got the rust off. It was super exciting to see him start at LT with Pepa on the right. Talk about bookends. I hope LaCount does get a chance in the NFL, because he has a real shot to make it.

My man crush for Pepa is pretty well known on this board. I was calling him our next three year starter at LT after Tala Esera graduated. He’s got tons of talent, but he’s gotten injured so often that NFL teams may get scared off. He will definitely get a FA tryout if he’s not drafted.

I’ve also been a fan of Adrian Thomas and thought he would/could have started for us last year as well. Even now, he’s still somewhat green and another year of experience would definitely have helped him at the next level, but he’ll get a shot too.

Next year we have Austin Hansen and Matagisila Lefiti back. Hansen is an interesting guy. Never in a million years did I think he would be our starting LT. He looks like a guard and plays with that OG masher mentality, but he’s actually done pretty well at OT. Kudos to him. Also appreciate his willingness to let LaCount start at LT against UNLV. I saw him on the sideline and he was up, cheering, into the game, supporting the team. No sulking at all. Good on you, brother.

We’ve heard a lot of talk about our redshirting O-Line guys and I’ve been pleased to see them at our home games, focused as Coach Shaw ran this year’s players through their pre-game drills. The red shirts stayed together, paid attention, focused on the task at hand. No fooling around even when they knew they weren’t going to be playing for another year. I think our O-Line is in good shape for the next couple of years.

Anyway, can anyone help identify the redshirts shown in this photo? From left to right, I know its Sean Shigematsu, Frank Lloyd, Levi Legay (in uniform), ?, Kody Afusia?, and Dave Lefotu.

C’mon guys, you are shorting Garret’s talents! We need him in a position that needs the MOST help that will also directly positively effect the University of Hawai’i and it’s interests both academically and athletically.

Garret = Governor of the State of Hawai’i.

  321. WarriorMojo December 6, 2010 3:41 pm

Wow, that’s the ultrabig size picture again. Just click it once to make it smaller.

By the way I’m pretty sure that’s not Kody Afusia next to Lefotu so that’s just a guess. Also, I do see Jordan Loeffler at the games too, but haven’t really seen him with this group.

  322. Kazz December 6, 2010 3:42 pm

    D1,

What’s the matter? Not interested in having a job where part of the description includes having to listen to the testimony of raving lunatics that cuss you out and call you names while trying to beg and plead you to do what they ask???

    😆

  323. WarriorMojo December 6, 2010 3:43 pm

Other things I was glad to see Saturday night: Geordan Hanohano back in uniform. I don’t think he got into the game, but it looks like he’s coming back from his knee injury.

  324. Kazz December 6, 2010 3:46 pm

What can still become of Paclebar?

I remember watching him at the Warrior Bowl in 2008 and I forgot who asked me, but I thought he was one of the walk-ons that would make the final cut and he did. Then he got a shoulder injury either that year or in 2009 that kept him out.

He hustled and hit his routes hard and really made a case to the coaches.

Receivers…. Personall, would like to see if Stutzmann can play slot.

  325. NorthShoreFan December 6, 2010 3:49 pm

#314..Pomai…BSU already trying to use a “cloaking” device…blue field, blue unis…

Maybe Garret can design on “Camo” uni for the Warriiors….

  326. RupertDaStupert December 6, 2010 3:53 pm

I have a notion, not proof, that the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl may be a permament fixture at SMU Gerald Ford Stadium. That means we’ll never see June Jones and his Mustangs ever at the Hawaii Bowl. Their bowl is already sold out. I gotta say something a little off the subject. For all the conroversy that Mel Gibson has raised, making anti-semitic remarks, and others, I got to admit he’s a puzzle. I think “We were soldiers” and “The Patriot” were two good war films, but patriotic as well. How puzzling to make “John Wayne” type patriotic movies and yet manage to put his foot in his mouth. I think you bloggers are all right, Greg McMacken has found a way to stop micromanage and learn how to delegate responsibility to his assistants in a positive way. The future looks bright!

The two guys next to Dave Lefotu are Scott Collins and than Elmir Lim III.

  331. Pride. December 6, 2010 4:01 pm

    RE: Ellis Hendersen

Ellis Henderson is the first player in GSHL History to earn first-team honors at four different positions (WR/DB/KR/AP). Ran for 84 yards on five carries as a junior and caught 37 passes for 717 and nine TDs. Also had three returns for touchdowns. Henderson benches 235-pounds, squats 385 and claims a 36” vertical jump.

Partial senior (4-2) stats: 350 yards receiving and three touchdowns; 25 tackles and three interceptions on defense; one kick return touchdown and one punt return touchdown

Henderson claims a 2.8 core GPA and a 950 SAT. No plans to retake the test – “I’m sticking with the score I have.”

Henderson: I know my biggest strength is my speed and my biggest weakness is that I need to be more aggressive and physical. I’m working on bettering both.”

No worry Ellis, one week in camp and you going be tired of getting beat up. You will get aggressive real fast.

First day of D1 football hits you like a ton of bricks. You find out in the first ten seconds that this ‘aint high school or junior college anymore. Sprint from drill to drill, someone in your face yelling at you at all times. Yeah baby, welcome to d1. This ‘aint no P.E. football, this certainly ‘aint no intramurals.

  339. Kazz December 6, 2010 4:16 pm

As your new Associate AD in charge of finances, I’d like to trim the budget by reducing payroll in one area.

May I introduce the new Director of Compliance for the University of Hawaii Athletic Department…

😈 (Pulls out a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.) 😈

There will be no questions at this time or EVER.

    Mahalo.

  340. Kazz December 6, 2010 4:18 pm

However we are still unable to comply with the measures taken by USC and Auburn that reflect the $$$ savings on compliance payroll as barbed wire and a wooden baseball bat are more expensive materials as opposed to a BLINDFOLD.

  341. d1島 December 6, 2010 4:19 pm

Lots to do. A couple of issues:

-First of all, the K-E-O house property needs to be expanded to cover the entire block up to Yogurt Land and it needs a swimming pool. Also, that ladder in the back to get to the roof needs an upgrade.

-Beerpong tournaments on campus needs a new corporate title sponsor.

-Bring back those Ben and Jerry’s ice cream pints, the ones with the pop rocks inside, to the little convience store near the dorms for those ummm… late night ummm.. “munchies”.

  361. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 5:11 pm

With the 3 new JC recruits, does that mean we will have 15 receivers on the roster? Some of them may have to play defense, special teams, or help hold up the surfboard & cheerleader during opening dash across the field.

  418. CoachTiff December 6, 2010 10:19 pm

It has been brought to my attention that in the craziness that came along with senior night, not all players received their championship gear. All of the red shirts, who have all season been told they were an important part of this team, did not receive their WAC Champ hats. Some even had them ripped from their hands, all the while other players and people on the field were stuffing 3-7 extra hats under their shirts! Not the best way to treat the future of UH football. All season it has been preached that they are part of the team, but they miss out on this. I find this sad and hope that there is either players who will cough up the extras they may have taken for friends- who played no actual role in the football season, or there is someone out there who will make the situation right.

  419. Kekoa December 6, 2010 10:27 pm

Jmxxxx – Diana told the Macy’s mgr to get a stock boy to help haul all her boxes out on a hand truck. That prompted the other shoppers to demand the same service. Not having shopping carts makes it hard for peeps to carry out their bounty.

  420. Dan-O December 6, 2010 10:27 pm

    Henderson….2.8 GPA and 950 SAT?

That WILL NOT get you admission to UH.

  421. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 10:29 pm

    Curt.

!5 WR over a 5 year span is on 3 per year… maybe we need more? After all we need at least 4 per year.

  422. Kekoa December 6, 2010 10:29 pm

Coach Tiff ~ This is unacceptable. How can we help?

  423. Curt December 6, 2010 10:31 pm

    CoachTiff,

You’re right. Can you bring up this issue directly with Coach Mac? He has the position to correct this problem. Good luck.

  424. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 10:32 pm

Actually with these 3 we have 12… 1 less than this season.

  425. Kazz December 6, 2010 10:34 pm

    CoachTiff,

Some people still don’t know how to handle success.

Remember when “fans” stole some football helmets when they ran onto the field to celebrate our 2007 outright WAC championship?

People like this make Hawaii REALLY seem SMALL TIME!!!

  426. CoachTiff December 6, 2010 10:34 pm

I have encouraged the players to talk to Mac, as he seems to be the type of coach to try to fix the situation, but that is in their hands. I cannot force them. My goal was to make people aware of the situation, in hopes that maybe others had ideas, or knew who could help. I just know there are some red shirts who were for sure rubbed the wrong way by what happened. They just want to share in the celebration of an amazing season! One that they are very much a part of on and off the field.

  427. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 10:35 pm

Whoops I stand corrected .. we have 18 with these three for next season…

We lose 6 this season… Salas, Pilares, Blount, Henry, Tinoco, and Bradley.

  428. jm2375 December 6, 2010 10:35 pm

Kekoa – is Diana singlehandedly saving the economy of the State? 😆

  429. Curt December 6, 2010 10:39 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Wow…18 receivers. That seems excessive. Reminds of 2009(?) when we had 38 quarterbacks.

  430. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 10:53 pm

    Remember this link? http://www.ksl.com/?nid=294&sid=11724657

  431. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 10:57 pm

Curt… 5 receivers will graduate next season too.

Miah Ostrowski may be the only receiver graduating senior in 2013, unless this year’s JC recruits graduate along with him.

Seems like our freshmen receivers usually need two solid years to pick up the scheme, and third to master them – and that’s if they are good at what they do.

Qbacks take just as long … and we’ve already seen how we quickly we can go through 4 due to injuries and academic shortcomings — not counting poor performance.

  432. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 11:03 pm

In 2014, 8 receivers are already scheduled to graduate… More if any JC recruit from this year redshirts. That would be the year with Sampson, Paclebar, Puueo-Luna, Amburst, King, and Stutzman. Names that I’m sure we’ll become quite familiar with.

  433. Curt December 6, 2010 11:06 pm

    Coach Tiff,

Don’t worry. I just e-mailed Coach Mac and forwarded your comments. Take care Coach.

  434. Curt December 6, 2010 11:11 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Thanks for all the insight into the receivers. Sounds like we have some studs on hand and hopefully more arriving next season. Even the new JC recruits will need some time to get up to speed on our r&s offense. I’m already looking forward to letter-of-intent signing day and next season!

  435. What!!! I don’t count at T-University given all da kine I know downtown? DrDoc with his almost 34 years as a CPA and a doctorate in Mathematics doesn’t count either?

  445. al December 6, 2010 11:45 pm

curt…ellis henderson is in high school. he is the only confirmed wr.

this saturday amongst the recruits were darien bryant a te/wr and kyle washington wr, both still in hs.

i believe that 4star rb was also there, anyway one of the recruits surely looked like him. forgot to mention this earlier.

  446. madeinhawaii December 6, 2010 11:56 pm

    nite all!

  447. Ralph December 6, 2010 11:57 pm

I think Henderson meets the minimum GPA at 2.8 but he needs the core classes UH requires, Algebra 2. I’m not sure what the SAT score is needed since UH is one of the schools that require the essay section.

  448. al December 7, 2010 12:19 am

wide receiver/slot backs by the numbers.

    20 on current roster

    11 are on scholarship

6 will have used up their eligibility after the hawaii bowl, all six are on scholarship

5 the number of scholarship wr/sb entering spring camp

14 the number of receivers potentially returning

    4 qb’s throwing during drills.

4 the number of receivers on the field at a time.

16 the number of receivers necessary to run an efficient practice

4 the number of scout team receivers needed to run an efficient practice

4 the number of wr/sb we need to recruit annually to maintain the numbers required fo run this program

4 the number of walkon wr/sb needed annually to upgrade the talent level and replace those that leave the program every year.

  449. al December 7, 2010 12:21 am

ralph…pretty sure that he is a qualifier.

  450. Hawaiianbod December 7, 2010 12:21 am

    new post brother al.

  451. al December 7, 2010 12:23 am

with a limited number of scholies this year…the staff is being more aware of not wasting a scholie on someone who cannot qualify.

anyway, don’t believe everything you read on the recruiting blogs. don’t pay attention to some of that stuff unless it came from tsai or the coaches mouth directly. or if you have a little birdie.

  452. Curt December 7, 2010 12:29 am

    al,

Great to hear that Henderson is a hs recruit. I was really hoping we’d go that route as much as possible. I’m anxious to hear if we land the 4-star rb and other quality prospects. Hopefully they had a great weekend. Thanks al.

One of the factors that many people frequently enjoy this critical aspect of achieving results with weight-loss, is simply because of the wide range of delicious foods that could be contained in a dieting menu. One of the largest errors that a lot of individuals make once they are preparing their diet meal plans is that they don’t use very much of several different items to pick from as they decide on every single day’s meals. A dieting menu that has very small wide variety can turn into boring and bland in a very brief quantity of time. It truly is also 1 of the largest causes why lots of persons which are trying to lose weight, finish up ‘cheating’ on the particular dieting techniques they have chosen.
