National honor for Green

After a school-record-setting performance — 327 rushing yards in 19 carries against New Mexico State — running back Alex Green was named the Capital One Impact Performer of the Week.

Green was selected by online voting. He received 33 percent of the votes.

Here’s the link:  Alex Green.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Al Beaver, truly one of the great gentlemen of Hawaii football. He had that tough-guy appearance, but he related well with his players during his time as UH assistant coach in the early 1990s.

Beaver also created what has become a nationwide fad: The grayshirt option. One of his last acts before leaving the Rainbow Warriors was to get a commitment from offensive lineman Kaulana Noa. But feeling that Noa needed another year to develop, he convinced Noa to delay enrolling at UH for a semester. Noa, who was in Bob Wagner’s last recruiting class, had a successful career at UH and was selected in the 2000 NFL draft.

George Lumpkin has had a front-row view of the UH football program for 38 seasons. Asked to list the five best UH running backs, he came up this list (in no particular order):

Gary Allen. “Gary had the ability to make you miss.He wasn’t a big guy, but he made it happen.”

Nate Ilaoa

Alex Green. “He can make people miss, and he has the power to run through contact.”

Jamal Farmer. “He had the same things Travis (Sims) had, but he had shake-and-bake.”

• Junior Lopati. “He was on his way to being one of the best before he got injured. He was never the same after that.”

* * * * *

Things we’ve learned in sports this week:

• It’s OK to ask for money for your son to attend a university as long as no money is exchanged.

• Helmet-to-helmet hits are bad; fist-to-face hits are not so bad.

* It’s OK to over-pay A.J. Burnett; it’s not OK to over-pay Derek Jeter.

Avis has selected Kekoa as the winner of the green-friendly UH-New Mexico State game sheet autographed by a certain record-setter.

It sounds like the MWC Commissioner tried to bend the conference rules a little to keep TCU. I also note from this article that UH is paying an entry fee into the MWC even though BSU, Nevada, and Fresno State are having their entry fees waved. The MWC said that they would waive their entry fees for Nevada/Fresno because of the money that Nevada/Fresno have to pay the WAC.

The numbers didn’t work, even when Thompson did everything he could to get TCU to stay — offering, sources said, to redo the league’s revenue distribution and even handing over incoming Hawaii’s entry fee directly to the Frogs.

West Virginia’s AD said in an interview today that the Big East will add THREE more teams (looks like they want to get to 12 football schools). He specifically mentioned 4 candidates for the 3 spots:

    Central Florida

    East Carolina

    SMU

    Houston

If C-USA gets raided by the Big East, La Tech and North Texas might get their C-USA dream fulfilled.

Happy Birthday to Slugger and JoJo!

Happy Birthday to everyone I missed sending birthday wishes to over the past week. First my family visited, then I had a big work thing, and now we have visitors from Taiwan. At least the visitors leave in time to let me see the UNLV game.

  9. Stephen Tsai December 1, 2010 6:47 am

    Thanks, Garret, for the info.

Thought Boise State reacted too early. It might have landed in a better conference.

  10. NYUH December 1, 2010 6:48 am

I assume Travis Sims would be on his top six list?

    http://www.thespread.com/ncaaf-articles/120110-2010-college-football-week-14-unlv-vs-hawaii-preview-a-odds

According to latest college football odds, oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made Hawaii 34.5-point spread favorites for Saturday’s game against UNLV. Current NCAA Public Betting Information shows that 84% of more than 1,455 bets for this game have been placed on Hawaii -34.5.

  11. Garret December 1, 2010 6:51 am

Gary Allen is my all-time favorite UH RB. I loved watching him play and remember just how awesome he was. He had a good OL opening the way of course, as teams knew that UH was a run-first team but they still couldn’t stop Allen.

  12. Garret December 1, 2010 6:52 am

    ST,

I don’t see what other conference BSU could have joined. Geographically, only the MWC was a realistic option. The Big East wants an entry into the Texas TV market for their TV deal…there are not enough TV sets in Idaho to attract them.

  13. Garret December 1, 2010 6:53 am

Note that if the MWC is offering UH’s entry fee to TCU that kind of indicates that UH to the MWC for football is a done deal. That and a million other indications all point to the same thing.

  14. Garret December 1, 2010 6:54 am

Mack said that 11 recruits will be visiting UH this weekend and attending the UNLV game. I hope that the stadium is filled and noisy, as that will help the recruiting efforts.

  22. greenthumb December 1, 2010 7:19 am

#8 Garret, good catch. Interesting how the writer mentioned the UH entry fee almost as an aside, like it was expected/given. Question, if UH really does leave the WAC, are we leaving late enough to share in any of the Nevada/Fresno penalty money? Or do we get hit three times, missing out on the $$, paying an entry fee to MWC, and paying travel subsidies? I like the idea of joining the MWC but I hope someone’s watching the checkbook. 🙂

  23. Okole Maluna December 1, 2010 7:22 am

Garret: even handing over incoming Hawaii’s entry fee directly to the Frogs.

So now that TCU is still leaving, MWC Commissioner could wave the entry fee for Hawaii like he did for Fresno and Nevada would be nice.

For men’s VV I would like to see them stay with UCLA, USC, etc… and not move to BW but if that’s the deal maker to get in… then ooOO well.

    ST,

Where do you get your info regarding Tsaiko birthdays? Is Midori still advising you?

  28. Derek December 1, 2010 7:40 am

I figured that Central Florida and East Carolina would end up in the Big East. It seems a natural. With one more team to fill 12, it could be Houston, SMU, Tulsa, or Souther Miss. If TCU wants a travel partner a natural would be SMU, but Houston has been a more successful program this decade.

Talking about Lopati, what happend to Chad Lopati? Is he on target to be eligible to sign a Division I offer in 2011 or 2012? And what about T.J. Alifipo who originally commit to the Warriors? Where did Charles Tuaau and Pep Fonokalafi go? Are they in JC? Kapiolani CC?

  29. HawaiiMongoose December 1, 2010 7:46 am

Garret, re #6, good find. With TCU and the DFW market already in hand, I don’t see the Big East gaining any benefit from adding SMU. However Houston would be a good travel partner for TCU, and of course UCF would play the same role for USF. And if Villanova decides not to move up, ECU could substitute as the 12th.

It’s crazy that schools like UCF and ECU may end up in a BCS AQ conference while schools like Boise State and Hawaii continue to compete for scraps. Like daddy said, life ain’t fair son.

  30. Kekoa December 1, 2010 7:47 am

  33. From late last night in yesterday’s blog:

Anyone here interested in a collective meeting with State Senators Jill Tokuda (Chair, Education), David Ige (Chair, Ways & Means) Glenn Wakai (Aloha Stadium is in his District), Carol Fukunaga (Chair, Economic Development & Technology) to talk about athletic/academic/economic development issues?

Let me know since most Senators are already beginning to fill their calendars with meet-ups. These four – especially Da $$$ Chair – would like to hear directly from the public well before the start of the 2011 Session on issues likely to come before their committees.

Don’t forget to click on my name above for information about the re-scheduled (rained-out) Green Gifting Sale this Sunday. Remember orders can be taken by phone as well as in person.

  37. Okole Maluna December 1, 2010 8:08 am

Texas A&M accepts Cotton Bowl bid; Up next: Alabama or LSU

If the Las Vegas Bowl lands the Irish, it would pass on the Utes to avoid a rematch and most likely take Air Force over BYU, thanks to a little encouragement from the MWC — which would prefer to see a team in the bowl game that will remain in the MWC next season.

Such a scenario would drop the Utes to the Independence Bowl played on Dec. 27

Guessing Boise State stay in Boise or gets an invite to a better bowl and open up another bowl for WAC?

    Hey Kekoa,

Thank you for the kind words. I had my first Thanksgiving in Hawaii in more than 14 years. It was a cherished time. My girls do appreciate traveling, I think. But since we are here on the islands for a while they are excited about the idea of going to school!

I try to avoid all sorts of politics in my life. I think by doing that I can actually contribute in a meaningful way. But agree China needs to be involved. Being Korean and having seen the North Korean border up close and personal, this truly is a sore spot for me. I have heard too many painful stories that is involved with families being separated from the Korean war, including my own. I’m praying that reunification can happen some day and that my father has a chance to find more than 5 siblings.

  49. Shoko December 1, 2010 8:33 am

    Morning Warrior fans!

I know the WAC has a 50-50 revenue sharing for teams that get into a BCS bowl game, but I can’t remember if the 50-50 is also an MWC policy. Anyone know?

  50. jm2375 December 1, 2010 8:39 am

OM – #37 – I think predictions for WAC-associated bowls have B$U going to the Kraft Hunger Bowl (in SF – too bad for Fresneck), FSU going to the New Mexico Bowl and Nevada going to the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise. Nevada gets to spend a week in Boise and play on the SmurfTurf. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy (team)!! 😈

  51. Not an Expert December 1, 2010 8:40 am

    Tidbits:

There are 120 FBS football teams.

    For the year 2009:

82 teams had winning home records. 68.33%.

72 teams had losing road records. 60%.

It’s running pretty much the same for 2010.

  52. Not an Expert December 1, 2010 8:44 am

Going forward I believe all schools will not work as a group to get the MWC AQ status. The precedence has been set. Be the best in football and hope for an invite to somewhere else. UH needs to plan for and work towards that goal. Every school is looking out for number 1 based on current and past history.

  53. Kekoa December 1, 2010 8:48 am

    G(China) ~

I spent time near the DMZ at Chun Chon back in ’65-’66. South Korea was still recovering from the devastation of the conflct. Many people in the region complained of having their family members spirited away by the N. Koreans.

Like you, I’m always hoping for a peaceful solution to a very complex situation. A *sky pilot* I knew once said, “when the power of love overcomes the love of power…then there will be

    peace.”

  54. Not an Expert December 1, 2010 8:49 am

MWC affiliation for UH football. Keep on winning and be a steady top 25 team.

Big West affiliation for other sport programs. Keep on winning too. Warrior nation support on the west coast is important. Additional UH fans at road games needs to be somehow monitored to show the PAC-12 how we add value to attendance which adds revenue.

I know the WAC has a 50-50 revenue sharing for teams that get into a BCS bowl game, but I can’t remember if the 50-50 is also an MWC policy. Anyone know?

    Shoko,

I found an article once (either in the Idaho Statesman or the Fort Worth Star-Telegram) that explained that for the 2010 Fiesta Bowl, Boise State kept $3 million according to WAC rules and TCU kept *$5 million* according to MWC rules. So, if that article was correct the MWC lets the team that goes to a BCS bowl keep more of the money they earn.

If Ferd is correct, the payment for a non-AQ conference sending a member to a BCS bowl is going to increase from $6 million to $8 million (thank you ESPN for the extra $42.5 million the BCS has to give out!). So, before the WAC would give $3 million to the school that went to a BCS game and the conference would split the other $3 million…now, the MWC would give $5 million to the school that goes to a BCS game and the conference would split the other $3 million.

The MWC actually has a financial incentive to see the WAC no longer be recognized as a football conference…

Also, if the WAC no longer exists (for whatever reason), then the non-AQ money gets split four ways instead of five. That means more money for the Mountain West, which gets the biggest share right now.

  84. al December 1, 2010 10:11 am

while byu awaits a bigger invite, would they ever reconsider and come back to the mwc?

do you think that the mwc is hotly pursuing a pair of texas schools?

    smu, utep, houston for example???

i wonder what goes through the minds of the likes of texas-sa and texas st now that the wac is about to come tumbling down or become an even much lower tier conference?

  85. Pride. December 1, 2010 10:12 am

One of the requirements for a good football team is senior leadership.

It appears that the Warriors have good numbers in this area with fourteen seniors as starters, plus a kicker for fifteen.

  86. NorthShoreFan December 1, 2010 10:17 am

    #83 ….One unnecessary play….

Each program has some “special” players who “make memories” for the program…Gary Allen was one of ours.

  87. al December 1, 2010 10:18 am

trading places…the marquee teams of the mwc will be headed out to parts unknown, well, only in byu’s case. the mwc raids the marquee teams of wac.

mwc now becomes the wac of old except for the three who left.

who’d of thought this…i still remember the day when the mwc who used to be the wac who are now the old wac in sheep’s clothing took off and left hawaii standing in the middle of the dance floor all by ourselves (well virtually) with no one to dance with on the finale number.

you know, this is a great lesson in; “don’t burn the bridges behind you.”

  89. Stretch December 1, 2010 10:19 am

One of BYU’s safety net in going independent was that it could play the WAC teams in football. That would help with their scheduling. With all the teams going to the MWC, who does BYU have to play now?? I wouldn’t be surprised if they are reconsidering right now.

  90. Pride. December 1, 2010 10:19 am

It appears that the 2011 Warriors will also have good senior leadership. As a matter of fact one or two of them appear to be leaders as juniors already.

    Offense – Moniz and Hansen.

Defense – Paredes, Meatoga, Tuipulotu, and Aaron Brown.

It appears that Meatoga took ahold of this team over this past off season. We’ll benefit from his leadership for two seasons.

  105. NCAA December 1, 2010 10:46 am

    Ms. Slugger,

You can put lava cinders around your garden to prevent them from entering since slugs do not like to crawl on non-porous material. If they are already there you can place wooden boards in your garden and check under the boards everyday for slugs.

They supposedly eat that stuff and die? I’ve never tried it… can’t say that it works.. but cornmeal is cheap enough…

For those Hawaii high schoolers who are being targeted by the new Rebel coach (from the comments to the story cited by Mr. NCAA)

The fact of the matter is that UNLV is a football pit. Terrible facilities, virtually zero community/fan support, and below average high school football. Look at the UNR game vs Boise last weekend- the place was sold out and all of Reno was watching. Hauke is doing the best he can with nothing.

    “tomorrow”… meaning “today”… that is.

  122. Derek December 1, 2010 11:17 am

UNLV is terrible on the road. They have lost all 6 of their road games by an average of 34 points and their road scoring is 9.6 points. The UH spread is about 35 and maybe moving to 35.5. Hawaii is averaging 42.6 points per game at home which includes USC and Nevada. The score for this Saturday’s game depends on how things are going. If Hawaii is leading by 35 points, McMackin will probably let the senior reserves get more playing time plus the backup to get more reps for next year. What I fear is that UNLV will get a back door cover and lose between 27 to 34 points. The only way UH will cover this game is if UNLV makes a ton of mistakes and UH get a couple of cheap touchdowns and/or defensive touchdowns. UNLV has not scored more than 14 points (once last week against SDSU) on the road all season and they scored only 7 points on the road against Idaho and BYU. They scored 10 points against Utah, West Virginia, and Colorado St. That said, I think UNLV will score anywhere from 14 to 17 points this Saturday. That means, Hawaii willl have to score about 50 to 53 points to cover. Tough to do. I thought Hawaii would beat New Mexico St. last week 56-0. It was 59-24. Understandable that the home team would score some points.

Botched field goal in the 1st quarter was not good. So, I’m going for this week 52-16 with Enos making 1 field goal, Moniz throwing for 4 TDs, Green scoring 2 TD, and 1 defensive or special teams TD. UNLV w/ 1 TD and 3 field goals.

Looking at last week’s game in particular and the season in general, we need to get a kicker who can kick off the ball consitently into the end zone 5 yards deep. Field position is so important. It doesn’t have to be the regular placekicker. I remember I think a guy named Joe Denalo for the NY Giants who only kicked off because he would always put in the end zone for a touchback. We gotta find a guy like that. It could be worth in gold. Agree? Disagree? Maybe UH coaches should have an audition or announce some tryouts. It can’t hurt. Somebody from down under? If we have somebody who can kick far it is going to really help on the road when we have to go to places like Boise, Colorado St., Wyoming, Nevada, Air Force, and New Mexico in altitude where the ball flies farther. Field position is so critical and would help the the kickoff team.

P.S. Good players mentioned as leaders for next year’s team. I would say Richard Torres will also be a leader in the secondary. It would help the young guys back there with the likes of John Hardy-Tuliau, Dee Maggitt, and newcomer Darryl McBride. I think we will be good in the secondary, but we need to build up some depth for the future. Lewis Walker will be a great asset, and some of the younger guys will have to step up. Mike Wadsworth will be on a mission for another year before he returns. Offensively, we need to re-build the OL with 4 new starters and 3 new starters in the receiving corps. We have some players in the program so the spring will bring a lot of oppportunity for the new guys. Darius Bright will definitely will be in the mix, along w/ Stutzman. Ostrowski will get a shot along w/ Sampson. To the coaches and Mac, good will hunting.

  123. Michigan Warrior December 1, 2010 11:22 am

If someone posted this already my bad. I’ve heard many people say that the only shot Hawaii had to join MWC was for TCU to leave for Big East or at the least this was the ideal situation.

If this quote is true the ideal situation was for TCU to stay and for Hawaii to be added to the mix…leaving just 1 more to go to 12. If standing at the magic number 9 is something the MWC wants to do for the time being, TCU leaving was the worst thing that could have happened.

Also I wonder how much our entrance fee is going to be. Must be pretty substantial if MWC was wiling to use that as a carrot for TCU to stay put.

“Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram columnist Gil LeBreton wrote that Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson offered “to redo the league’s revenue distribution and even handing over incoming Hawaii’s entry fee directly to the Frogs” to keep TCU from jumping to the Big East this week.”

  130. NCAA December 1, 2010 11:34 am

The Rebels don’t look bad on film. However, the only film I saw of them was their highlights. Anyhow, the Warriors will remain focused and end the season with a bang.

Another thing I notice is that Hawaii gets more love in Vegas than the home team university. Quite peculiar.

  131. Old Diver December 1, 2010 11:38 am

“I can’t come up with one for you,” Hauck said. “We’ve got to come back right after the game. It’s finals week. We’ve got to get into recruiting. There’s not a lot positive to play them on Dec. 4.”

Not when Hauck would rather spend his time trying to convince 17-year-old high school seniors to play football for the Rebels.

I have to believe UNLV’s record and the shellacking they will take this Saturday will affect their recruiting more than making this trip to Honolulu.

  132. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2010 11:50 am

the 9th island baby…no where else in the world do you see a prize like “a free trip to vegas” so common…but if u did, its not something most people are thrilled about.

    only in hawaii! =)

  133. Kazz December 1, 2010 11:52 am

Guys, don’t get on UNLV’s Coach Hauck for sounding like a little ***** (female dog). He can’t help what he is.

Of course he sees no benefit to playing Hawaii. We’re steam rolling over the competition, off a WAC Championship-clinching victory and looking to ****(unwelcomed physical advances) the Rebels.

Coach Hauck’s sorry ***(gluteus maximus) team and program would benefit from a forfeit indeed.

Sounds like I’m going to enjoy reading quotes from Hauck as the week progresses…

  134. HawaiiMongoose December 1, 2010 11:54 am

Re #129, I’m starting to think that’s correct. The MWC’s plan may in fact have been to add Hawaii and Utah State to get to twelve, and TCU leaving has thrown a wrench in the works. I previously thought the MWC would rather raid CUSA than add more WAC schools, but it now appears TCU wanted to be the only MWC member in Texas. Also, adding any CUSA schools would have put an end to MWC commissioner Thompson’s efforts to work cooperatively with CUSA on ideas for busting the BCS. With TCU now out of the picture there could be a serious debate going on in the MWC now about what to do next.

  135. Derek December 1, 2010 11:56 am

Running backs! If you are going on production, I wouldn’t put Lopati and Farmer in the mix.

Lopati was very good, but unfortunately I was at the game when the SDSU defensive back hit his knee near the out of bounds as he was going for a TD in the South endzone. I was in the South endzone and to this day, I can visualize the hit and I knew it was bad when he went down. If my recollection, I don’t think Farmer finished his career as a senior. Something happened along the way. If you are going of production, you have to include Travis Sims and Nuu Faaola and maybe Hekoti Fakava. No question, Gary Allen is and was the best for me. After what Green did this season, over 1,000 yds. in a run and shoot offense and over 300 yards in one game, he all of a sudeen shot up the ladder in a hurry. Green’s stats last year didn’t open your eyes, but he’s been terrific this year and he’s been durable, knock on wood.

Hauck is not much of a thinker, leader, or coach if he can’t figure out more positives.

    Here’s some coach:

Teaches you how to prepare for travel.

Learn from each game you play.

Teaches your players to play hard no matter what the obstacles are.

Visit places many will never visit in their lifetime.

Experience the Hawaiian hospitality at Aloha Stadium.

Display your offensive and defensive schemes to potential local recruits.

    Eat local food.

See what it feels like to not hear slot machines.

    Rainbow Dancers.

  138. Slugger December 1, 2010 12:02 pm

Fried gizzards! Yum! Used to get them at Safeway for our halau potlucks in AZ.

    NCAA,

I have a bag of red lava cinders and plan to put them around the inside edge of planter beds when the soil is ready for beds. Gotta get rid of the nut grass & the creeping grass.

    mih,

I’ll try that cornmeal in a jar sometime. The beer gets diluted when the garden is watered, so cornmeal in a jar would be better to keep the ‘bait’ from getting wet. Will let you know if it works.

Got the cutest picture of Tai Purcell with ‘Uncle Austin’ Hansen this morning.

Oh, ST said he thinks the haole player behind AG was Zack Masch (or Tinoco, but it didn’t look like Tinoco.)

  139. A-House December 1, 2010 12:02 pm

    Gary Allen:

Smooth, silky RB a long time ago – slight of build, but strong/tough!

Hmmmmm, my memory says he was most effective around the ends – u know, student body right and student body left.

He says son will be a football player for Hawaii in 8 or 9 years – just a youngster now – believe 9 or 10 years old. We shall see. Hope I’m still alive!

  140. A-House December 1, 2010 12:08 pm

animal innards – yum – loved to eat them gizzards, livers, hearts, etc. until my doc says, “did you know your Uric acid count is high”?

I responded, what the hell is “uric acid”? Then, he proceeds to explain the effects of HIGH uric acid count and I stopped eating them things from 1959 – still miss them, especially tripe stew!!!!!!!

Then I see what my brother and two of my best friends go through and I’m glad I stopped.

who ever said life is not fair???

  142. Slugger December 1, 2010 12:18 pm

After reading the article in the LV Tribune-Times, I don’t see why our HI boys or mainland Poly boys would want to play for Hauck. He’s not talking about the positives, esp. since they recruit here. I agree w/ you, NCAA.

I wonder how long he coached at Montana. They used to have a lot of success when playing in FLG @ NAU.

  144. Buffoman December 1, 2010 12:26 pm

A great college coach once told me, if the chemistry is not right, even the most individually talented team will struggle to win. Conversely, a team that may not be as talented and have great chemistry that truly “does not understand” loosing will win games that they are “not supposed to win”.

This coach won it all a few years back, and when I praised him for the feat he told me, “yes, these were talented young men, but they were by far, not the most talented individuals who put on this school’s uniforms. They just enjoyed each other, trusted each other and genuinely enjoyed playing the game with each other. That is why we were successful.”

Hopefully, the 2011 team will have the chemistry that the 2010 team posseses.

  148. al December 1, 2010 12:39 pm

ncaa…35 pts is a lot to give no matter who is playing. there is a point threshold in wagering where one says, “mo betta jus watch um play”.

the game starts at 35-0. if they score, its 42-0, you get my drift.

the warriors have been point spread darlings this year, why ruin a good thing.

  151. madeinhawaii December 1, 2010 12:47 pm

al… the thing is.. might be better to put the oatmeal in jar and lay it down with the mouth of the jar slightly tilted down… that way.. the slugs can get in, but water won’t accumulate in the jar and the oatmeal will stay dry longer… slugs in.. slugs out.. oatmeal lasts longer and kills more slugs and snails… Or put the oatmeal in the middle of a large PVC pipe… rubbish in.. rubbish out..

    Mr. al,

What is your #148 referring to? If it was to my #97 then we have our signals crossed again. The meaning of my post is that not all hunches, predictions, or statements become true. It has been known the USU have had talks with the MWC for several months already. But what if Utah St.’s bubble gets popped? TCU was the key. Either it’s odd man out or find another TCU.

  156. A-joe December 1, 2010 1:02 pm

I was looking at a list of former Rainbow Warriors who played in the NFL and came across James Fenderson. No one mentions his name as an all-time RB at UH. Anyone have any recollection of memory of him?

  159. NCAA December 1, 2010 1:16 pm

In case anyone is curious about NFL players from UH.

    http://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=University+of+Hawaii

  160. Kaimuki Kid December 1, 2010 1:30 pm

James Fenderson was a walk running back that had a shining moment i his senior year that went on to play in the NFL as a free agent mopstly on special teams. He had this uncanny knack of spinning out of tackles to gain yardage.

  161. A-House December 1, 2010 1:34 pm

    NCAA:

If you have the opporotunity, read June Jones’ book. There is a special section/chapter dedicaed to Fenderson who was living in his car until he got the scholarship. Very heart warming!

  162. touchthestick? December 1, 2010 1:34 pm

I met Al Beaver when he was running his own private investigator business.

He had it all: nose to find the answer, arms to encourage the suspect to be very accommodating, mind for disciplined completion of assignments, heart of gold.

The thing he lacked, in my opinion, was good looks, except somehow he encouraged a most beautiful woman to be his wife.

    Aloha Al.

  163. A-House December 1, 2010 1:35 pm

BTW, Fenderson played 5 or 6 years with the Saints as a reserve RB – believe he qualifies for a NFL pension.

  164. Old Diver December 1, 2010 1:35 pm

Last year at UNLV we moved the ball at will but couldn’t score. This year with Alex Green and company working like a fine swiss watch……..

    UH——-55

    UNLV—-24

nah, you can count on this one – I’ll be there!!!!!!

  166. Kaimuki Kid December 1, 2010 1:36 pm

If you don’t like the 35 pt spread you can always bet the half-time score, better yet why bet? The best bet is not to bet at all. Can’t you just enjoy the game for what it is, a game? It’s pretty sad when UH doesn’t make the spread and you can hear the fans grumbling in the stands. Fortunately, this year the have been the betters dream team.

  172. gigi-hawaii December 1, 2010 1:51 pm

yes, I remember that story about Fenderson in JJ’s book. It made me weep, it was so moving.

Hubby stood in a long line at Borders Pearlridge, waiting for JJ to autograph his copy. He even complimented JJ about the season in the elevator, but JJ was noncommittal. I guess he was thinking about SMU at that point.

  179. Old Diver December 1, 2010 2:13 pm

I always hear Jim Donovan talk about UH being a “Carnegie Level One Research University”. So I looked it up.

Doctorate Granting University (very high research activity)

    Pac-10 conference

    Arizona State

    Oregon State

    Stanford

    Arizona

    California

    Colorado

    Utah

    Washington

    Washington State

Mountain West Conference (after UH joins in 2012)

    University of Hawaii

The Pac-10 to protect it’s reputation for academic excellence is very choosy when looking at expansion, hence Colorado and Utah are good fits academically. That being said unless Texas reconsiders I really can’t imagine who else in the west might fit Pac-10 standards assuming Hawaii is out of the picture.

CHEEEEHOOOO!….CONGRATULATIONS ALEX GREEN!!….”MAKE MORE MEMORIES” THIS WEEK!!!

Switching topics…how da heck this can happen?…

The NCAA released its finding in a statement on Wednesday. The college sports governing body had concluded on Monday that a violation of Newton’s amateur status had occurred. Auburn quietly declared Newton ineligible on Tuesday and requested his eligibility be reinstated.

Newton now has been cleared to compete without conditions, after weeks of questions about whether he would be allowed to continue playing.

“Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement,” Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president for academic and membership affairs, said in a news release.

“From a student-athlete reinstatement perspective, Auburn University met its obligation under NCAA bylaw 14.11.1. Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible.”

You violated the rules but das ok..go play cause it’s a BCS game….reinstate USC too den you donkeys!

    Ok…pau rant….

  199. Derek December 1, 2010 3:21 pm

All WAC running backs will likely be Vai Taua, Doug Martin, or Alex Green. Receivers will probably Salas, Titus Young, Austin Pettis, or Pilares. Kellen Moore is probably the QB w/ Kaepernick or Moniz the 2nd team QB, probably Kaepernick because he’s a senior. Paredes and Mana Silva have a great chance to be All WAC on defense. Meatoga might be 1st or 2nd team DL. Any other opinions?

Coach Mack should be the Coach of the Year.

John Hardy-Tuliau should be on the All Freshman team.

  200. bighilofan2 December 1, 2010 3:21 pm

“The conduct of Cam Newton’s father and the involved individual is unacceptable and has no place in the SEC or in intercollegiate athletics,” said Mike Slive, Southeastern Conference Commissioner. “The actions taken by Auburn University and Mississippi State University make it clear this behavior will not be tolerated in the SEC.”………(das good cause we neva get punished so can do this again someday…)

“We are pleased that the NCAA has agreed with our position that Cam Newton has been and continues to be eligible to play football at Auburn University,” Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said in the NCAA’s statement. “We appreciate the diligence and professionalism of the NCAA and its handling of this matter.”…..(main ting we neva get ruled ineligible…odda wise we was going file lawsuit against No Clue At All…den dey going get mo hard time trying to run away and hide….)

  207. Michigan Warrior December 1, 2010 3:39 pm

Gratz to Alex Green on Impact Performance of the Week! Just posted it on Facebook too…

#198.. NSF… I’d like to see some in media to make some noise about this. Cam Newton still broke some amateur rules and needs to pay for it. Otherwise, everyone else will be demanding reinstatement. Why so hush hush? How about making the details of the infraction known, so that future student-athletes won’t make the same mistake? C’mon, national media… make some noise! Does the BCS, SEC, and Heisman control the NCAA?

  246. Kazz December 1, 2010 5:51 pm

This was brought up elsewhere. A new reason for concern with regards to the progress of the UH and MWC negotiations.

    From Wyoming’s AD:

CASPER, Wyo. — The Mountain West Conference took another hit on Monday.

In just the latest move during a whirlwind six months of conference expansion, TCU announced it will join the Big East Conference in all sports beginning in the fall of 2012.

It’s another hit for the league that just half a year ago thought itself in a position of power as it built toward receiving an automatic Bowl Championship Series bid.

Without TCU, BYU and Utah , and despite the additions of Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State, those hopes appear dashed, but the changes still aren’t all bad news for the University of Wyoming.

“From a competitive standpoint, there’s a lot of benefits going forward,” UW athletics director Tom Burman said Monday. “Wyoming is in a league now where budgets are at least comparable. TCU was spending in the mid-50s (in terms of millions of dollars), we’re spending in the mid-20s.

“From that perspective, it’s good. But there are some issues we have to resolve.”

UW President Tom Buchanan was even more upbeat.

“The Mountain West is probably as strong today as it was,” Buchanan told the Casper Star-Tribune’s editorial board on Monday. “I don’t think we’re any the worse.”

At the top of the MWC’s to-do list is the league’s television contract.

The deal with the MountainWest Sports Network (the mtn.) has to be reworked with all of the additions and departures.

Buchanan said the league’s presidents are scheduled to discuss expansion on Dec. 10.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the end of the shuffling,” he said.

Burman said there could be headway in the TV and postseason discussions with a seemingly secure base of schools.

“If you look at the nine members that are coming in and remaining, all indications are that we’re going to have some stability for a while — at least not having people leave,” Burman said. “I feel like, as a league, at least we know who’s in and now we can decide where we’re going and how we get there.”

Officials at Hawaii have publicly stated that they are in discussion with the MWC.

Other programs, such as Houston or UTEP, had been rumored as possible additions long before Monday’s announcement.

“I don’t think there’s any given that they’re going to expand,” Burman said. “All of it’s on the table for discussion — going to 12 with two six-team divisions, staying where we are as nine, which is not all bad.

“All of that will be up for discussion.”

So, too, will be exactly where the MWC stands.

Burman says he’s hopeful that talk about departures from the MWC is over.

“Do I know that? No,” he said. “But I think the nine members that are in this league are in a pretty good position going forward.”

Back to square one again so to speak… What incentive does the MWC have now to take in UH?

So they take us in football so now they are at 10 and still need two for 12. By some chance they take Utah State… ok one more… Who? C-USA??? What about the deal between the MWC and C-USA to not touch each other’s teams?

As someone already mentioned, with regards to the tone of this article, either the MWC commits to go to 12 or UH is back to where it started.

Again I go back to what I’ve been SCREAMING for the past few weeks.

    PRIORITIZE THE BIG WEST DEAL!!!

If we’re going to get stuck in the WAC for football, at least we can save $$$$$ and boost competition for our other sports in the Big West. To me, this ISN’T an option.

  247. Garret December 1, 2010 5:53 pm

    Garrett…. are you On now?

wonder if MWC will try to pick up Houston or SMU if they don’t get picked to to Big East?

    Okole Maluna,

I don’t think that the MWC will get Houston or SMU–C-USA has a great division for them for travel, more TV money, 3x the NCAA basketball money, and better bowl games. Plus, the MWC and C-USA are trying to work together so I can’t see the MWC raiding the C-USA.

However, if the MWC and C-USA decide to merge (it *is* being discussed), then UH and SMU will be in the same conference.

  248. Garret December 1, 2010 5:56 pm

It would be interesting if the MWC and C-USA were able to merge and get the BCS to make the combined conference an AQ conference. This article mentions that the WAC, MAC, and Sun Belt might object but get outvoted.

The two leagues are discussing a variety of options that range from unifying to negotiate more lucrative television contracts to jointly pushing for an automatic bid to the BCS.

Conferences without an automatic qualifying bid to the BCS, such as the Western Athletic and Sun Belt, would likely oppose the Mountain West and C-USA earning a joint automatic bid that would leave them as outsiders. However, the current automatic qualifying conferences, such as the Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences, hold the majority of votes and would have the ultimate say whether the partnership could move forward.

  251. Kazz December 1, 2010 5:59 pm

We shouldn’t put it past the MWC possibly using UH as a tool to try to keep TCU.

Heck looking at it from an MWC stand-point, they can use UH to keep TCU in the conference getting it closer to AQ and closer to 12, but if it all went to hell, which it did, with TCU leaving, then what do they need us for with regards to what their original plan once looked like?

I’m NOT selling US short.. I’M THINKING LIKE SOMEONE REPRESENTING THE MWC.

Sure you can tell me, well, then why do think we should be in that conference? It’s simple, the WAC is unstable and EONS away from AQ status which is why more and more teams will leave. I have NO DOUBT that given enough time, Texas State or UTSA will be gone in less than 10 years, IF the WAC even survives for that long.

Tactics, like what the MWC MAY be pulling off by using UH as a tool to keep TCU, is sadly what keeps conferences afloat.

For the sake of UH athletics, looks like we need to be in bed with the “devil”.

I said it and don’t get mad at me. This IS what college athletics has turned into.

  252. Garret December 1, 2010 6:00 pm

Here is a link to the article that Kazz mentioned. By the way, I’d like to request that we don’t post entire articles here because I think there are at least 10 websites or blogs currently being sued because of sports articles that were posted without permission. “Fair Use” is considered okay for short segments of articles, but some newspapers are trigger-happy now for lawsuits due to entire articles being posted without permission. I’d hate for this entire blog to go down due to copyright violations.

Another article about Utah State and UH meeting with the MWC.

Knowing this may be USU’s last chance, and taking advantage of an already-scheduled basketball game against Denver Wednesday night, several members of Utah State’s administration traveled to Colorado a day or two before the game to meet with MWC commissioner Craig Thompson and try to pave a path for the Aggies to join other WAC schools such as Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada in the conference for the 2012 football season.

According to reports from the luncheon, Barnes said Utah State and the MWC have had ongoing discussions for months — to the point Barnes jokingly said he was afraid of being accused of stalking the MWC.

Many schools have offered to pay UH $1 million to pay at their stadium. UH has said no. How is this different than how UH had so many teams in the past come to Aloha Stadium without UH going to their stadium? In fact, UH didn’t even pay them anything more than travel costs.

For all the complaints about Texas canceling their second game at Aloha Stadium, the FACT is that Texas played a game at Aloha Stadium for FREE and UH never went to Austin. Texas realized that the NCAA killed the value of the Hawaii Exception–13 games in 14 weeks for a team in a conference with a conference championship game is a lot to ask…an extra bye week is important then.

The fact is that last season 2 of the 4 WAC teams that played at Aloha Stadium did *not* schedule a 13 game because they felt the bye week was more important.

The fact is that UH fans whine about teams not wanting to play at Aloha Stadium for FREE when many teams are offering $1 million for UH to play at their stadium.

  265. Garret December 1, 2010 6:30 pm

Another best-case scenario that I hope is being discussed:

With UH, the MWC has 10 football teams.

If the Big East takes 3 C-USA teams (which is openly being considered), C-USA can add La Tech and get to 10 football teams.

Every MWC team can play each other, giving 9 conference games.

Every C-USA team can play each other, giving 9 conference games.

The champions of the MWC and C-USA can play a championship game, with the winner automatically getting a BCS bowl spot.

The MWC and C-USA would basically split a BCS spot equally…they would be treated as 50% of an AQ conference instead of 20% of an AQ conference like now.

This would be consistent with what the commissioners of the MWC and C-USA were talking about proposing over the summer. It would take the Big East taking 4 teams–1 from the MWC and 3 from the C-USA…it actually seems that the Big East is going to do that.

So, you want teams to play at Aloha Stadium for free? They get no benefit from that–they would make just as much money having a bye week instead since UH only basically covers travel costs. Players needs bye weeks to heal, coaches get to travel to recruit during bye weeks, and bye weeks let players catch up in the classroom…traveling to Hawaii, especially if teams come early, makes things hard for the academic side.

Games sees lopped sided when you see UH shooting 51% FG and Cal getting 54 shots to UH 35? The Ref made sure and took Wiseman out of the game with early 4th fouls and leading score at that time with 8, he didn’t score any after that. Comparing to Cal lead score had no foul at all the entire game?

BO Barnes should have played more shotting 3’s all he had was 2-4 3pts total = 6 point the whole game. Even Bobby could have shot more 3’s he was 2-2 3 PM-A. Cal shot 25 3’s!!!

Garret, re #265, why wouldn’t the MWC and CUSA just stand pat in that scenario with 9 teams each, rather than adding Hawaii and LaTech respectively? That way they could each play balanced 8-game schedules and share the money with fewer members. And Hawaii would be stuck on the outside looking in pretty much forever…

do you think that perhaps this president made such statements with some subliminal messages just as a bargaining chip during the hawaii proposal finalization?

wyoming’s travel costs would be as high as anyone’s in the conference every other year to hawaii. maybe he states those things so that we come groveling and offer up our kid sister on the bargaining table?

when you look at the new mwc, it is going to be the old wac. and the newer wac transfers will represent most of the top tier caliber for football.

the mwc, no matter are proactive and i am sure they subscribe to the safety in numbers theory. hawaii is in and utah state could be coming in with the tailwind if byu’s last ditch offer to return does not come to fruition.

anyway, no worry. have a couple of greenies this saturday as a toast to the last game of the season and to congratulate alex green with a green one (beer that is).

Garret’s point that the MWC and C USA have a championship game where the winner gets a BCS berth makes sense for the BCS. Right now the BCS teams number 67 teams out of 120 d1A schools or 56%. If Garret’s scenario plays out 90 teams or 75% of d1A schools will participate in the BCS process and will not cost the BCS one extra dime. The thirty teams that are left out will be too weak for anyone to take seriously.

  321. Derek December 1, 2010 8:44 pm

I had read somewhere that academically speaking, UH’s entrance standards are the highest in the Mountain West Conference next to Air Force. UH doesn’t have to take a back seat to anybody when it comes to academics. For Hawaii residents, it is a huge bargain to stay at home and go to UH. My son went to Univ. of Washington for 2 years and it costs at least $20,000 a year and this was in 1999-2000. Can you imagine now! He came home and finished his degree at UH. Was he smarter going to UW? No. Was he a better person being at UW? No. Bottom line, he enjoyed his time and it was a good experience. It was very competitive and he learned to be independent away from home. But, he said you can’t beat home. He got his Master Degree from UH in Human Resources. At UH you can get a quality

education and it is so reasonable. And to think people grumble about a $50 activity fee per semester.

  324. Kazz December 1, 2010 8:55 pm

Can us UH fans sleep better by December 10th?

Can Utah State and UTEP fans join the Warrior and Rainbow Wahine faithful in celebration by December 10th also???

    I hate rumors. 😡

  325. A-House December 1, 2010 9:08 pm

I was not aware that the MWC required an “entry fee” for UH, but not for the others. Is this correct? Guess the public is not privy to all the MWC requirements for Hawaii to join the MWC. Perhaps the “are you interested in joining the MWC” (per Commish Thompson) inlcuded more specific items such as entry fee, travel expenses, how much $$ will you add to the TV kitty, etc.

Is Reno’s TV audience larger than Hawaii? Do people in Las Vegas care about watching Reno play?

Did the MWC commish say that the MWC would “waive” the entry fee for Reno and Fresno because they had to pay exit fee to the WAC?

Also interesting is the BWC commish statement that UH submitted “info only” papers and not an application to join the BWC. Why would UH do this? Did UH misunderstand what the BWC wanted? An acutal application? Interesting in that Jim D said that they submitted all the documents required to the BWC.

Are we facing a “war of words” between the MWC/BWC/UH? Could this lead to UH being left out of both?

I believe, but no one really cares what I think, that Hawaii has more to offer both conferences than both are willing to admit so they can “milk” UH for everything they want. Let’s hope that Hawaii’s desperation to join the MWC and BWC not blind the “management team” where they agree to “giving away the store”.

It’s too bad that no one at UH ever kept statistics on fan attendance or increases at games where UH played on the mainland (out of conference). Was there a spike in attendance? If yes, how much? Also, did ESPN keep records of viewership of televised UH games by mainland viewers? If marketabilitiy is key, what happens in Hawaii should not matter; only what happened on the mainland. Their “secret Santas” would know. They do keep ratings for the Hawaii Bowl.

We used to call the deli at Safeway in FLG and they would ask if we wanted them soft or chewy. I think they just dusted them with seasoned flour and deep-fried them. My Chamorran hula brother turned us on to it. I think they’d be great lightly marinated in teriyaki sauce, lightly floured & then deep-fried. Nuff about gizzards…

Remember one thing: MWC invited Fresno State and Nevada; Hawaii asked to be invited.

I think some UH fans can sleep knowing there is an “entry fee” as opposed to waking up to find that now that TCU is gone from the MWC, Utah State, UTEP, Houston, and SMU are more attractive prospective members than Hawaii… 👿

Is this part of the Matrix???

  351. al December 2, 2010 12:37 am

    let’s take a poll…

how many of you went and googled “Takeru Kobayashi”?

  352. al December 2, 2010 12:43 am

#321…yes derek. soon we will be known as the stanford of the mwc.

  353. al December 2, 2010 12:51 am

    #325…mrs. ahouse i presume.

well, i presume it is the mrs. becasue her grammar and spelling is way better.

regarding the big west conference, bwc as opposed to the mwc. the hawaii contingent is there to offer information to aid in the discovery period of this future applicant. the white paper merely details what we are, what we have to offer, who we are, what are aspirations are for the future. this would entail academic and athletic information.

included i would assume are some demographics, facts about the state, etc.

i would imagne some kind of data regarding how many folks besides the ahouse ohana travel to road games and far away tournaments is on one of those pages.

the acutal open application period is in about two weeks. the purpose of the visit and info sharing is to show that we are serious. i am sure some maui sweet pineapples, kona coffee, mac nuts, and leis accompanied the hawaii team.

it is kind of the little sad puppy in the window who’s expression says, “pick me, pick me”. or it could be that wallflower at the barmitzpah.

    get it?

  354. al December 2, 2010 12:54 am

    kazz…no worry. done deal.

in fact, i’ll wager that case of green bottles that in two years the mwc will get up to 12 teams if not by next summer’s end.

sooner or later, utah st will also do that exodus thing as well. there aren’t many viable options left in the western hemisphere for the mwc unless you include texas.

  355. al December 2, 2010 1:02 am

    kazz…by the numbers.

right now without us the mwc is at 9 members. if one more team leaves, bsu for example, then it is down to 8 which leaves them too vulnernable like the wac is now.

taking hawaii makes ten, a comfortable number. safety in numbers is a great theory.

then, why not grab utah st in the process? recapture some of the lost utah market. that makes 11 members. eleven is good because it leave one team a week to have a bye or to schedule a non-conf game. this is good because if you are playing at hawaii that year you could take a bye or play your bonus 13th game.

11? why not go for 12. that would ge great since now we could have two conferences and have championship game. a game that means more money.

  356. al December 2, 2010 1:08 am

what hawaii and the mwc should be petitioning the ncaa for, is to allow for a football season that is an extra week longer than everybody else. that could include the home non-conference game team as well.

the hawaii exemption would then become a great thing for us to have in our hip pocket. for each team that travels to hawaii; not only will they schedule a 13th game but they may also exgtend their season a week longer to facillitate playing that extra game.

i would be all over this.

    Northshorefan:

The UH band’s songlist is actually pretty diverse. USC band’s playlist consists of 3-4 songs. In the 7 years I went to/worked at USC, I heard one other song played besides their standards: “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benetar.

But yeah, when I was in the UH band, I know we had a bigger playlist. So it’s not the band’s ability that is limiting the diversity of songs. In fact, I noticed during the Homecoming game, it was the alumni band playing the older songs.

I doubt you would actully put on a mask, but it more implies like an acting differently, or not being yourself. That, in your dream anyway, didn’t work in attracting his attention.

The new Zune browser is surpr isingly very good, but not as beneficial as the iPod is. It functions nicely, but is notas swiftly as Safari, and features a clunkier interface. For those who sometimes program on utilizing the net browser that is not an concern, but when you??? re planning to browse the internet alot out of your PMP then the iPod is greater display and superior browser might be important.
