Pilares is Academic All-American; Colt update

UH slotback Kealoha Pilares today was named to the ESPN Academic All-America first team.

Pilares, who should earn a bachelor’s degree in May, said he aspires to be a physical therapist when his football career ends.

* * * * *

Colt Brennan underwent surgery today on his fractured left clavicle. He also has had cosmetic procedures for a 4-inch gash on his cheekbone, and a long cut on his right ear, according to his father, Terry Brennan.

* * * * *

With another road trip  — the Warriors will miss 20 days of school this semester — some players had to catch up on school projects before the team leaves tomorrow. Quarterbacks Bryant Moniz and Brent Rausch were among those who had excused absences today.

Sneak peek at the senior farewell:

1-1

* * * * *

And this ranks among the most popular:

1-3

* * * * *

Things I’ve learned in the past week:

• UH has a “leadership” team, apparently, when it comes to deciding on its sports future, as in, any time the WAC makes a counter-offer, the message will be relayed to the “leadership” team. Does that mean that since president M.R.C. Greenwood, vice president Rockne Freitas and two Regents brought UH and the MWC to the table, those four will be at the table to hammer out the final details such as travel subsidies, local TV rights and league-enrollment fees?

• CBS College Sports — which has a contract with the MWC and might have something to do with those dot races on the new Aloha Stadium scoreboard — is not really the same CBS entity that airs those CSI shows. And, on a side note, how come when I tried to watch the DVR’d recording of last Thursday’s “The Big Bang Theory,” there was, instead, a news conference featuring a “leadership” team?

* * * * * *

It should be interesting to see what comes of the TV part of the UH-MWC talks. For years, we’ve heard that the local TV rights were an all-for-one package, as in, no, football cannot be sold separately from, say, basketball, volleyball, soccer or softball. In the past, there had been entities that wanted to bid only on football. But with UH expected to go to the MWC in football and the Big West in most of the other sports, wouldn’t that mean the TV rights would have to be separated?

* * * * *

This week illustrates the enigma that is the WAC. Its home office is in Denver and the championship volleyball tournament is in Vegas. The WAC does not have a member school in either city.

    Good morning Tsaikos…

I’m dreading the new MWC TV deals…even though I have the Versus/mtn/CBS college sports package, I don’t think the online opportunities to view games will exist as they are right now with ESPN3. We’ll see.

    Hi ST and fellow Tsaikos!

Whoever comprises the leadership team at UH, I hope they come through with a solid agreement with the MWC in WRITING. Until the deal is sealed, UH is in limbo.

Let’s hope for the best, eh?

    Morning Tsaikos!

Good thing this past weekend’s game against San Jose State was in Hawaii. It’s been cold and raining here in San Jose since we got here on Friday. More rain in the forecast.

Good luck to the Warriors this weekend in New Mexico vs NMSU!

    Get em Tsaikos!

  13. kev-1 November 23, 2010 7:54 am

Okay, if anyone can explain it to me . . .

If the MWC, provided this all goes down, strips PPV, does that mean there will be NO televised games in Hawaii? Or will we have to wait for the occasional telecast on Versus? OR, would it mean that more away games would be on TV, such as Versus or whatever other TV station they control?

  14. Okole Maluna November 23, 2010 8:00 am

Good Luck to Wahine VV in Las Vegas:

    VOLLEYBALL: COLLEGE WOMEN

    WAC championship 4:30 p.m. ESPNU* NA/219

Good Luck to Donovan and Benson meeting today in Las Vegas.

It will be very interesting to see what WAC Commis Benson is offering for Donovan to bring back to the leadership team.

GO Leadership Team! Don’t give away travel subsidy they only travel to Hawaii every other year and we have to travel 4 times a year. MWC should be using the 13th game for traveling to Hawaii. That was the original intend granted by NCAA.

    Go Warriors… Beat NMS… Score 45-0

A radio person said ppv worth about $2.5 million now. If UH loses that, can they afford to move to MWC ? Can UH get enough from ticket sales, etc. in the MWC ? Attendance is supposed to go down in the new WAC though.

  20. Okole Maluna November 23, 2010 8:09 am

If we are able to join the MWC UH Football will be losing the PPV that is why BYU left MWC.

But It may be a good thing by losing PPV it will bring more fans to the Arena for both football and basketball. We need to fill the stand before being able to watch it for fee or free.

Don’t get me wrong I have PPV, DirecTV, Versus and other access from the West Coast.

But TV hurts Attendence. I hate to see empty seats and being seen on National Network.

  21. tommui November 23, 2010 8:11 am

OLDIE: What are you and P doing in San Jose? Don’t tell me (as I don’t want to feel older!!!) that there is graduation time somewhere?

  23. PU November 23, 2010 8:22 am

Benson has nothing more to offer UH and I don’t even recall hearing him say anything about a new offer yesterday. What I heard was he would offer what has already been offered in a face to face situation.Seriously what else could he offer UH other than a chunk of cash.

    TV Concerns

For years Hawaii has complained about being in the WAC now the chance to leave has arrived and we just might have to give up something to get something.

  24. Okole Maluna November 23, 2010 8:23 am

Free TV and Free Sports viewing on internet hurts attendence. Free should be only if the game is Sold OUT! That’s what NFL does… No local TV it is Blacked Out unless it’s sold out.

Pro Bowl and Hawaii Bowl as an example should not be seen for free on network unless game is sold out or you will see a lot of empty seats.

UH Men’s Basketball vs. Chicago State at Lahaina Civic Center is another example, I think as of right now there is no KFVE or ESPN. I’m thinking about flying over to Lahana with friends.

All seats are General Admission at $12 and over 65 and students at $6 what a deal!

But if TV picks up the match at Lahaina I will stay home.

  25. Old Diver November 23, 2010 8:28 am

The question is, can UH afford not to go to the MWC. The uncertainty of the WAC and the quality of the remaining teams will most definitely affect recruiting which will in turn affect PPV revenue not to mention ticket sales. Leaving for the MWC might be a gamble but staying in the WAC might be an even bigger gamble. Our leadership team will do what’s best for UH.

  26. Okole Maluna November 23, 2010 8:30 am

PU: We need to hear ALL offers nothing is guarentee yet. We don’t have an open invitation from the MWC or the Big West.

Actually, I rather see UH Basketball stay with WAC. I think those two UH coaches rather stay in the WAC Conference. Better competition and higher ranking status as a conference for NCAA Basketball.

  27. Pomai November 23, 2010 8:38 am

As far as the PPV is concerned, they should work out some kind of deal for the people who can not go to the game because of a physical problem. They should also make the stadium ADA compliant or even better. There are a lot of fans that would attend the games if stadium was ADA compliant. At least they are starting to, they have installed handrails in both the makai and mauka orange sections and will have them installed in all sections soon.

  28. oldie November 23, 2010 8:40 am

    Tom

We came out here for the SJSU game, then found out it was in Hawaii (no, not really).

Not to make feel even older, but our son has graduated and is working out here. Just out here to visit him.

  29. PU November 23, 2010 8:40 am

    * JD’s meeting with Benson will last 10 minutes.

    * I remember the old days in sports when you got to see the game on TV if it was sold out 24 hours in-advance.

  30. NCAA November 23, 2010 8:43 am

Many do not have access or are able to attend the games in person. The other revenue generating alternative is PPV.

There are many events that are on PPV. Many cannot see the venue in person so they opt for PPV. The latest for me would be the Machida vs. Rampage fight that also included Penn vs. Hughes.

  31. Will sports bars still show the games? We only have basic cable ourselves and go to a sports bar to see UH play away games.

Or are you talking no television at all – just radio. What’s going on – suddenly it’s 1950!!!

Interesting to read the differing and conforming opinions and speculative resolutions from the bloggers. Makes me think that the UHAD should have a hotline for inside tips. Naturally the tips would have to be recorded and listened to at a later date since there are not ample staff to man the phone lines.

D Reardon said today that even with no PPV, it’s possible the many fans will still not want to pay for the expensive tickets and endure the long hours to attend a game. Also, the younger generation doesn’t have an attachment to the old WAC teams such as Wyoming,(Air Force, Colorado St.) .

  45. NCAA November 23, 2010 9:23 am

Also, the younger generation does not have an attachment to the Big West. If you are a fan then it matters not who the opponent is.

  46. We go to practically every home game/match in seven sports. I want to know about what kind of coverage there will be for away games. Radio only? On-line reporting only? Or will there be television coverage avaialble? Going to a sports bar is not a big deal, but without away tv, it’s going to be difficult to sell any UH sport.

This afternoon, we’ll be at Murphy’s to watch the volleyball match and then head on up to The Stan to watch the basketball game. Will that be an option starting in 2012-2013?

  47. madeinhawaii November 23, 2010 9:29 am

So in two years do we all switch to Direct TV? Or will Oceanic and K5 battle it out to see who will purchase re-broadcast rights?

Seems like a whole lot of maneuvering just so we can continue to play the same teams.

    auwe.. auwe..

  48. diehard fan November 23, 2010 9:29 am

    # 44 – good thought. But i confess i am one who looks for free UH football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball on tv. Even the re-runs of football sometimes. Used to attend many years ago when H. Vasconcellos was UH coach, and then Dave Holmes, Larry Price, Tomey, as my father paid for the tickets.

We can still watch wahine softball on ESPN when and if they go to regionals, etc. ?

  49. madeinhawaii November 23, 2010 9:30 am

Don’t a lot of restaurants carry Direct TV instead of Oceanic?

  50. NCAA November 23, 2010 9:31 am

    Ms. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc,

You seem like a diehard UH fan but you just have to be patient. UH isn’t in the MWC or Big West or whatever yet. When the dust is settled and the ink is dry then you’ll find out what your away game viewing options are. Till then, chillax, enjoy the roller coaster ride with your favorite drink.

  63. diehard fan November 23, 2010 10:10 am

    # 58, 60 – Mack has said on radio, the reason he is not revealing the UH commitments this year is because in the past all the other mainland teams then go down his list and start recruiting those players. Because they know that UH has done the scouting, research, hard work to find the valuable local players.

  64. Pride. November 23, 2010 10:13 am

Hmmmmm. Generally, mainland recruits want to stay close to home, and local recruits want to get off the island and experience life away from home. Hawaii football recruiters definitely work for their money.

  65. madeinhawaii November 23, 2010 10:18 am

    Pride…

So what made you play for home?

  66. Pride. November 23, 2010 10:18 am

If Hawaii were in an A.Q. conference, I’m guessing that more of the top local players would stay home toplay. What’s interesting is that some of the best local high school players become very, very, good players at mainland schools, yet only a select few people in Hawaii will recognize their name. Whereas there are some players who play for Hawai that become household names.

  67. Whoops!! Wrong day – we’ll be listening on the radio today and going to Murphy’s/The Stan tomorrow. Too many things on the plate today.

Apparently Jim Donovan DID propose a football only membership for UH with other sports to the Big West to the other WAC presidents weeks ago and they (other WAC schools) just never got around to meeting properly to vote on it.

POMAI #27 – There are many fans who can’t make the games because of physical problems – thank you for pointing this out.

If Benson offers us complete travel expenses (charter flights, hotels etc) and pays the travel costs for the other teams to come to Hawaii, maybe that could be the start of talks …

    skycap,

or the Big 10, or the SEC, or maybe even the NFL for that matter…

But in all seriousness, the best scenario is first getting into the MWC, 2nd to have TCU not go to the Big East and for BYU to reconsider…that would make 12.

If in 2011 ESPN is competitive with their negotiations to get MWC games, we may be able to get a decent piece of the TV pie.

“The Big Bang Theory” … I remember that from my college years. It’s what I was counting on when I got my first, nice, clean, bachelor pad in Makiki.

  102. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2010 12:41 pm

    Old Diver,

My dad is legally handicap and we have thought about sitting in the handicap seating area due to his worsening condition.

It’s definitely an issue that could be raised but I wouldn’t see it as a “must”…I mean honestly I feel more sorry for handicap people who want to watch UH Golf…No way around literally walking/wheeling the entire course to do so.

At least with the stadium and football once you get to the seat you can just sit.

That being said…one of the most Bull$*&^ things I have ever seen is how UH has handled handicap parking at the stadium. ALL of the handicap parking is on the Makai side of the stadium…so if your in a wheelchair or whatever and your handicap seats are on the Mauka side you have to literally navigate the entire stadium to get there (one of the conditions of getting a handicap card is not being able to walk 200ft without resting/stopping). They should split the difference and make it Half makai and half mauka…Common sense but even after talking to UH and Stadium authority they don’t get it…idiots.

  104. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2010 12:47 pm

Stadium Authority response was and I paraphrase…

“Sorry but we don’t handle the parking any more. UH bought all the parking stalls and divide them up and manage them according to their own needs etc.”

    so I call UH athletics….

UH atheltics response to my inquiry was and I paraphrase…

“Well sir, we are required to provide X-number of parking stalls and so we have done so and are in compliance…”

btw…isn’t Stan Sheriffs nephew or something the lawyer in the wheelchair who goes around suing businesses for not being in ADA compliance? That would be ironic.

  108. Pomai November 23, 2010 12:51 pm

#88 tommui – I am wondering how many who have a physical problem would be able to go to the games if:

    1. Had easy parking close to the entrance.

    2. Stadium was totally ADA compliant.

    3. Had an ADA elevator to the ADA sections.

We really need to look at this as in two years nearly half the population in the state will be over 65. Fact is a lot of loyal fans are going to be burdened with physical aliments that may prevent them from coming to the games.

  109. d1島 November 23, 2010 12:51 pm

  110. rage777 November 23, 2010 12:52 pm

I don’t think it’s just about the money from PPV, but from the travel subsidies. Right now UH doesn’t pay any, but if they move to the MWC/BWC they have to pay for both leagues. I would have thought somebody did a comparison for no travel subsidies vs travel subsidies for both conferences already. You got to think that UH has to pay for their own travel and for other teams to travel to UH, so it might be a chunk of change. But it really shouldn’t matter, UH should leave the WAC either way.

  115. madeinhawaii November 23, 2010 12:58 pm

I wonder if you could get closed circuit captioning for the hearing impaired for live games shown on a screen like that?

  116. Pomai November 23, 2010 12:59 pm

One thing I would like to see the stadium do is enforce the handi cap seating, I sit in the last row of orange section an have these two kids who sit in the handi cap seat behind me. Last year he dove over me an into the next row to get one of the t-shirts they shot up there. I would guess that the seats belong to his grandparents or something like that, but that is one of the things that need to be corrected, if your not handi capped you don’t sit there.

  117. madeinhawaii November 23, 2010 12:59 pm

  119. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2010 1:01 pm

    rage777,

BINGO!…these numbers should have been crunched and recrunched numerous times since we have consistently been trying to get into the MWC…The subsidies have always been a huge issue. I doubt either side has to do further studies and investigations on this. Im sure both sides have already agreed upon a number.

I just think the discussions now are between Hawaii., MWC, TV. The TV details are probably the only thing holding either side back right now.

If anything maybe MWC has learned the hard way about TV contracts and the BYU and will be wiling to be more open.

  120. Pomai November 23, 2010 1:01 pm

#115 MIH – don’t they have that option now?

  121. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2010 1:03 pm

    Pomai,

Good point. From what I understand it to be the handicap person is allowed one “assistant” to sit with him.

So like for me it would be my dad the handicap and me the assistant.

  122. madeinhawaii November 23, 2010 1:05 pm

    Rage777

PPV and other TV rights to Warrior games is worth 2.5 million a year to UH. That’s a lot of money and broadcasting rights to lose. I just hope CBS Sports and Versus are more open to negotiate than the balking that got BYU to eventually take the greater risk of independence.

  123. Kazz November 23, 2010 1:12 pm

There are four BIG screens in the arena and this is not counting the busted up scoreboard that will eventually get changed. I believe they added those about three to four years ago.

The resolution needs to be improved though as the images aren’t bright enough to see. They are projection-style screens and actual “monitors”.

  125. kama krab November 23, 2010 1:34 pm

    Howzit Everyone,

From all the things I am reading, it would smart of the MWC to renegotiate it’s TV before they continue to evaluate anymore realignment. It’s looking more and more that the only way they will become AQ is if they keep there best teams and the only way they are to do that is to get a TV deal that will not only give more exposure but give leeway for rebroadcast on a local level. They will also need to get a TV deal that will allow it’s member school to broadcast games that are not picked up by the TV deal. I think if the MWC can do this then you will see them in a much better spot then there are in now. They might have been an AQ conference already if they didn’t have such a sucky TV contract.

  126. al November 23, 2010 1:40 pm

  127. Kazz November 23, 2010 1:40 pm

Hmmm.. Seems like the other miracle that UH’s Leadership Team can pull out is to save as much of our our local TV deal as much as possible.

A few days ago, the one other miracle I was looking for wasn’t a miracle as we’re pretty much GONE from the WAC.

We shall see because they they wouldn’t bend for BYU, what leverage do we have?

  128. kama krab November 23, 2010 1:50 pm

    But,

With the MWC you have stability. With the Wac you are waiting for the ground to crumble around you.

I think in the end, we will probably see pay-per-view go to the way side but we may see free TV come back on a re-run basis. If this happens then it would be a decent compromise for now while waiting to become an AQ conference. Once that happens, TV money may double from what the conference makes now and will more than make up for the money lost from pay-per-view. But in the end just gotta wait and see. All speculation right now.

  129. Committed Road Warrior November 23, 2010 1:53 pm

The current MWC hodgepodge of The MTN/CBS-CS/Versus pretty much ensures that all Mountain West football games end up on TV each week, at least once full-time conference play commences. The only Mountain West home games that didn’t get TV time from those three networks were a few out-of-conference matchups, mainly against 1-AA foes.

The non-football part of the UH TV deal is still doable, from what I can see. Not sure what UH can salvage in terms of a local TV deal for its football games…assuming the MWC TV deal is first priority, I think at best K5/Oceanic would only get the rights to possibly 1 or 2 out-of-conference games that The MTN/CBS-CS/Versus would not otherwise pick up.

Who knows? It’ll be interesting to see what UH can negotiate for a TV deal (if any).

  130. al November 23, 2010 1:56 pm

    from i’ve been told…

graves is slightly ahead of shutter on the depth chart and then there is nielsen. kevin spain is out with an injured elbow so is physically unable to compete at the present time.

then of course we have rausch and austin ahead of the freshmen.

stutz2 has been in nearly each game during the second half of the season. making a catch here and there. i like his prospects as he has hands, understands the system, has speed, and has that stutzmann “no fear attitude” (i think he gets that from his mom). hopefully he’ll visit rainbow drive inn more often and pick up another 15 lbs.

paclebar is somewhere on the depth chart. haven’t heard much on his progress, i believe he toils on the scout team. we have a bunch of wr/sb bunched up and anyone could breakout from the pack. terrence bell is one who did just that recently.

i like ostrowski’s potential along with bright, poueu-luna, sampson, and king.

one guy who is rarely mentioned, but, will play a prominent future once he gets his legs back will be malosi te’o who walks on in january or this summer. he and sterling jackson would make a great combo at rb. and i still like lister for the future.

  133. al November 23, 2010 2:03 pm

k5 or whomever will still do the non-football stuff.

the mwc should employ the k5 telecast crews to do the hawaii home games since it would be more cost effective. ppv for home games via k5 is doable for local view only. the neighbor islands viewership will probably end up paying full price. only ppv will be available for home games via television.

road games could come along free via the mwc contractors or some games not scheduled for free per view could be incorporated in to the package ppv deal.

something like this is probably a feasible venue/agreement that will satisfy all.

  134. al November 23, 2010 2:05 pm

d1…totally agree he should retire from special teams if only to preserve his future.

it’s a good thing that kevin spain is taking a medical redshirt this year, otherwise they’d have used him for safety as well.

    madeinhawaii:

    November 23rd, 2010 at 10:18 am

    Pride…

So what made you play for home?

Dick Tomey lied to us. He and Ray Nagel talked about Governor Burns’ dream of having a big-time football program in Hawaii. Tomey said that the only way that it would happen is if good local players were willing to be part of that “vision”. He talked about being on national television, and being ranked in the top twenty nationally. He said that we would someday play toe-to-toe with teams from the Big-10, Big-8, and Pac-10. Tomey talked about filling Aloha Stadium with 50,000 people and with crowds so loud that you wouldn’t be able to hear yourself talk.

Tomey talked about one day being able to tell your grandchildren that you were part of that foundation that helped to build the mighty Hawaii football program. In 1996 and 1997, I was thinking that Dick Tomey lied to us. The program looked like it was doomed to failure.

But on December 2nd, 2006. I finally understood what Dick Tomey was telling us. It was at that Oregon State football game in Aloha Stadium, when the stands were rocking back and forth, and the noise was deafening. I understood the “vision” that Gov. Burns had thirty five years prior to that night. I said to myself, “Wow, look at this place, look at these people. This is what Dick was talking about. I finally understood why I changed my mind at the last second and became a Rainbow instead of a Husky. That same year Nathan Fletcher decided not to sign with the Sun Devils and became a Rainbow. Mark Tuinei decided to become a Bruin, but came back to Manoa two years later. A year later Jesse Sapolu signed with Hawaii, even though ASU tried everything they could to get him. Falaniko Noga was ready to become a Trojan, before signing with Hawaii. All those guys bought into the “vision” that Dick Tomey painted many years ago.

What’s funny is that I think the biggest recruit was the one that Dick Tomey made at the airport when he arrived here in 1977. That was his first recruit. Tomey went to the airport to intercept a guy by the name of Blane Gaison . Blane was ready to board a plane to Boise, Idaho to join his high school teammate David Hughes with the Boise State Broncos. Dick Tomey shared that “vision” with Blane, and Gaison turned around and decided not to transfer to Boise. Blane Gaison became the WAC’s Stan Bate’s award winner in 1981. What better athlete to build a program around. Blane Gaison(1980) and Nelson Maeda(1979) are the originators of the “Senior Walk”.

And no Koakane, I didn’t stay for the Chili Plate from Rainbow’s.

Way I envision it is if it’s on one of those channels that’s hard to find, somehow Oceanic will pay for the rights to make it available to all.

What happened, I imagine, is this: UH “leadership” team sets up meeting with MWC, comes to some sort of an agreement. Then — whoops — now there’s the realization that the TV partners need to be brought into the talks. The option, of course, is UH games can be shown taped delayed, like the old days.

  157. One of the critical issues that got me to understand the connection between academics, athletics and politics was when I worked as an academic tutor in the Department of Athletics while I was in graduate school and at the Legislature for 19.5 hours a week from January through the early part of May.

I remember having serious discussions with Education and Higher Ediucation Committee Chairs about the connections, but most of them really never got it. It was a stretch for some of them to get the relationship between quality public education and UH.

I remember one legislator telling me that if you have a bright boy, you send him to Iolani or Punahou, and if he is also a great football player, then you send him to St. Louis.

  172. NorthShoreFan November 23, 2010 3:36 pm

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird’s’ mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to ‘clean up’ the bird’s vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John’s outstretched arms and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.” John was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, “May I ask what the turkey did?”

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!!!!

  175. Turfwar November 23, 2010 3:55 pm

Pride, thank you for post #137. Those were stories that would never have been known and players like yourself would have carried them to the grave when in fact they needed to be shared. It was the days when the football offices were in bungalows and the weight room was a cave. As a young employee at KHON I had the opportunity to work on the Tomey Show for nearly a decade and I strived to tell stories just like those in your post. I once spotted a young ST peeking behind a makeshift curtain in the coaches office that hid the list of players being recruited that year. I was hooked on recruiting and have been ever since. But you need to know the dream and vision happened long before 2006. It started the day you signed to stay home. For that we will always be grateful.

Thank you to for sharing. I really appreciate all your insights to the past. We definitely stand on those shoulders who have gone before us. BTW, I emailed my friend about possibilities in Beijing and he has come back with wanting to have a more detailed plan. He doesn’t think high of the prospect but that maybe because it doesn’t have any legs. Needless to say, I am a bit disappointed by the lack of enthusiasm. Somehow, I feel like I kind of failed here.

#175 – That dream started at Governor Burns office. Burns shared it with some of the downtown guys that I don’t know. Probably Tom Mui knows who they are. Maybe Tom Mui is one of them. Ray Nagel was brought in to bring that dream to fruition. Dick Tomey was the young 37 year old UCLA assistant who could sell ice to eskimos. Dick Tomey had to sell the product before it went into manufacturing. Dick Tomey painted a very good picture for everyone. Believe me, I chuckle when people complain about facilities now. Most adults who went to UH and are over the age of fifty, remember that the “quarry”, was a quarry. Back then registration was like a cattle call at Klum Gym, in the quarry. Facilities today are like a mansion compared to the portables that the athletic offices used to be in.. Ray Nagel, Donnis Thompson, Dick Tomey, Red Rocha, Dave Shoji, were all pioneers. Stan Sheriff carried the torch later. Jim Donovan learned at the laps of Stan Sherrif and Rockne Freitas. I believe that it was Rockne Freitas that gave Jim Donovan his first job as the facilities manager for the brand new baseball facility. Jim is the torch carrier today. Jim knows and understands the vision and the history.

When you stop in on your way back to China one day, we can sit down with the AD. Start small, start slow. Baby steps. Don’t be discouraged. People have a difficult imagining things that they cannot see. Baby steps, we’ll get it done. If not in Beijing, then maybe in another city or province.

  185. Pride. November 23, 2010 4:40 pm

One day, China will watch American football. It’s inevitable. It will happen. To what degree, no one knows. But we need to position ourselves to be the pioneers. It may go over small, it may go over big. But it will jump over the pond. Small in China??? Well you can look at the numbers. What is small? We wanna be in position when the inevitable takes place. Snooze you lose. Snooze we lose.

#187 – Rugby teams around the world have athletes that would excel at the American version of football. It’s unfortunate that most rugby athletes think of American football as a sissy sport.

Australian rules football players think the same way also. It would be wonderful to get more athletes like former Rainbow Colin Scotts. Colin Scotts was one of the best athletes that I’ve ever seen. For any size.

    How to prepare for NMSU

    Needed:

    3 cucumbers

    1 tablespoon salt PLUS

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    1/4 cup sugar

    1/4 cup rice wine vinegar

    1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

    Directions:

Slice cucumbers in half. Remove the seeds if they are large. Slice in thin diagonals. Sprinkle with the 1 tablespoon of salt and place in a bowl. Let stand for 20 minutes.

Rinse, drain, and remove excess water by putting the cucumbers in a kitchen towel and squeezing out the water. Combine the sugar, vinegar, remaining salt, and ginger. Pour over the cucumbers and chill.

    …………..

    oops.. I meant.. NaMaSU.

    Hello!

Yesterday and today, yep past midnight here, was declared a “freeze warning” which translates to temps below 34 degrees.

Low for today, 11/24, is 29 degrees with wind blowing a brisk 30 mph – talk about freezing da bums!!!!!!!!!!!

WE saw/met with Brew and his parents after the game. Chatted as we walked from the area to the casino area at the Orleans.

Tomorrow we plan to meet with Ronnie and her group after the game.

BTW, we thought we saw Kazz, but was mistaken. Looked like him from across the arena.

  243. al November 23, 2010 10:50 pm

    recruiting info of note…

    by the numbers.

yup, it is all about the numbers.

no not the apr numbers, it’s all good there.

ncaa allows a maximum of 25 new scholarships per year.

however, the maximum total number of scholarships is 85.

we currently are at our maximum total of 85.

we have 21 scholarship seniors on roster. which normally means that we would have only 21 scholarships to dole out in february 2011.

    right?

not so in our case. one of the seniors is redshirting this year, that would be tank hopkins, so next year he returns a as a fifth year senior. (minus one)

an athletic scholarship is for five years.

so then we have one injured senior who should and will take his fifth year status next year so that his surgery and rehab will be paid for by the university of hawaii. (minus two)

and we have another who even though is on target to graduate will continue his education because that helps pay the bills for his family and he has every right to do so. (minus three)

so, by the numbers, barring any scholarship underclassmen relinquishing his scholie because mack will not release anyone unless for disciplinary actions,

we will have only 18 scholarships to give out come february 2010.

now 18 ain’t too bad you say?

we have about 7-8 greyshirts awaiting a scholarship in january. oh and we have two running backs who will vie for the starting position who also deserve a scholarship.

    what to do?

    what to do?

Ohio State’s Prez disses B$-You and TCU

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Even if TCU and Boise State run the table, they still don’t deserve to be in the Bowl Championship Series title game, Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee said Wednesday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the president at the university with the largest athletic program in the country said that TCU and Boise State do not face a difficult enough schedule to play in the national championship game.

“Well, I don’t know enough about the Xs and Os of college football,” said Gee, formerly the president at West Virginia, Colorado, Brown and Vanderbilt universities. “I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it’s like murderer’s row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.

Yes, I had the same exact problem, and it was by accident that I found a solution. I have to wash my face before bed with a non-soap cleanser, and then apply the "Comfort on Call" cream (very light layer of it) on my face. It’s by Clinique, and it’s sold for use as a protectant in windy situations, etc. For some reason, it stops the bumpyness in its tracks. I have to repeat it every other day to keep it going.

  399. designer watch sale December 19, 2010 12:00 am

Most of the time I can personally tell; however, it all depends on the replica. I mean, I see so many knock-off Coach, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton bags, when the C’s in Coach are backwards, the handles on the LV bags are different colors, and the double C’s in the Chanel logo are off. I’d much rather save up for the real thing than to have fakes for numerous obvious reasons, such as quality. But then again, there are some replicas that can cost up to 500 bucks, and it’s sometimes nearly impossible to spot the differences between that and the real thing.
