Light and Bright practice

Good, lively practice today. The Warriors went about 2 hours. They’ll go, maybe, a little more than 90 minutes tomorrow, and then do a split-shift Thursday: Half the practice in pads, half without. The point is to teach them the adjusted schemes for Saturday’s game against San Jose State while providing some rest for healing players.

• Best play of practice was Darius Bright’s “steal.” It appeared nickelback John Hardy-Tuliau made an interception, but Bright was able to wrest free the football. By the way, Bright was aligned as a slotback.

• Although he is redshirting this season, Terence Bell was so impressive in the Scout Bowl games he has received reps with the first team. He is another candidate to move to slotback, according to receivers coach Mouse Davis.

• Sean Shigematsu has gained 30 pounds since the start of training camp, and is expected to compete for playing time next season. Both right tackles — Laupepa Letuli and Kainoa LaCount — are seniors.

• It was nice to see Spencer Smith and George Daily-Lyles taking reps on defense today. Smith missed six games because of a fractured right forearm, then lasted one series against Boise State. Daily-Lyles has missed the past four games because of a high-ankle sprain.

These must be the dog days. A handful of people at the Scout Bowl games. Only KITV’s Brandi Higa and Robert Kekaula at today’s practice (the only one in which the starting quarterback is allowed to be interviewed).

Gotta make sure Pilares, Letuli, etc. are totally healed too. Even if they have to miss the next couple of regular season games, maybe they can be fully healed for our Bowl game. Plus, they want to be ready for any Senior stuff that comes up, as well as UH’s Combine. Gotta be at 100% for the NFL’s scouts!

  19. Michigan Warrior November 16, 2010 8:34 am

Wonder how many X-rays the players get during

the year for their injuries and then add to that

the number of times they get full body scans at

    the airports coming and going???

Anyone watching out for their well being.

Too much radiation can be more deadly than

    a Rocky Belboa brain drain…

I just dont wanna see this kid seriously hurt. Heard he could get drafted I know the Boise game had meaning but the kids future seems bright wish he didnt risk it.. But since he did the kids got guts..

I agree, also what does playing injured players tell your reserves?

  28. Pomai November 16, 2010 9:01 am

Uniform color – don’t see a problem with it, if the coach calls for black then it should be black, with all the fans in the stands wearing a black shirt it shows the support for the team. But then again we always hear that the fans are a part of the team right, so since when do we as a team question the coach????????? No i in team………

I really enjoyed last night’s game. Nitty gritty… to the finish.. Been a while since the Bows played with such heart and didn’t cave-in at the last minute. Central Michigan was smaller and feistier. Both sides were relentless. Good game.. better cause we won! Go BOWS!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Someone told me the team had lime green uniforms in the past. WOW!

  44. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 10:14 am

Today’s article on last night’s win mentions Bruce O’Neil… If they haven’t already, the powers that be for UH Athletics should be in contact with Bruce. Bruce, after all, is one of the most trusted liaison with Chinese athletes. Especially in the Basketball. But with all his years of dealing with them, expanding roads into other sports shouldn’t pose as great a difficulty.

We didn’t get home from the basketball game until well after 2 am; unfortunately, I could not get out of bed at 6:30 am to get into Waikiki for a conference starting at 8:30 am so my day’s plans have shifted. Oh, well, the $40 wasted on the registration fee will help the sponsoring organization make a little more money.

Wonder how many people will show up at a regular game time from here on out?

  48. gigi-hawaii November 16, 2010 10:24 am

LOL. Well, at least some of you managed to watch the game last night. I couldn’t stay up and went to bed around 10:30.

  49. CoolEthan November 16, 2010 10:35 am

    Ipu-

The TSA has officially changed there name to T&A.

  50. lopaka43 November 16, 2010 10:36 am

    Aloha Tsaiko Ohana,

Yawning along with everybody else today. Exciting game made more exciting than necessary, probably because both teams had played three games in four days.

But agree with those who thought forest green uniforms would be a lot better than the ugly black uniforms they wore last night. I don’t know who designed them, but I don’t see any of the Hawaiian style details that make our uniforms distinctive. Just a lot of awkward looking panel shapes and stripes.

Best UH basketball uniforms were the ones with the aloha print shorts that the Fab Five wore, IMHO.

    Esme woosh…back to lurking

  51. Kazz November 16, 2010 10:44 am

We could not get the seats directly behind the UH bench last night so we sat in the front row directly across from them.

The crowd just continues to get BETTER and BETTER at these late night ESPN games every year!!! So sad that the crowd will be NUMB again once the fogies aka silent season ticket holders will return to scoff at loud and excited fans but with a budget deficit UH is not really in the position to open up those seats for free to students…

I just hope they continue to take FULL advantage of the free tickets to them ALL SEASON LONG. They occupied and OWNED their section last night packed in shoulder to shoulder standing, bouncing up and down, dancing, and showing the potential for a REAL college atmosphere in the arena. I’d guess there were about 300 of them in that side of the arena with pockets of groups of anywhere between 10-15 students scattered all over.

Josten Thomas is the spark plug this team needs. Heck, even after all that mess with the technical fouls he was getting the crowd behind the bench to start standing and clapping sarcastically at the other team. HA!!!!!

The crowd around us were really irate with the HORRIBLE officiating. It’s like they were getting paid by the whistle. I am sure I offended the people sitting courtside with my HONEST opinions.

The person that should have won the sign contest was the guy that made the “Unscramble the letters: CMU” sign. 😆 😆 😆

I think Chawan mentioned this, but those free shirts UH handed out to the students to wear looked nice especially since they put the ENTIRE schedule on the back for them to hopefully pay attention to. Good job by the marketing department on that one!

    ——-

I gave in at the last second to wear all black. I STILL believe BLACK shouldn’t be our primary home color. It’s a good GIMMICK color, but has really NOTHING to do with what UH or Hawaii represents.

Last night was one of those games where GIMMICK colors are good to use on certain occaisions and while my heart said GREEN AND WHITE, the bigger goal of looking “as one” with the crowd and the team as a representative of the university was really the RIGHT thing to do. Hell, Addidas could have given UH a yellow uniform and if they called for a yellow-out, I probably would have given into it also.

  52. Kazz November 16, 2010 10:51 am

Like I said… GIMMICK color, GIMMICK uniforms last night.

First of all, football is the ONLY sport where the home team sports the dark colors. Other sports wear a white jersey with their school color as trim.

Our new Addidas home uniform with the green trim and the tapa design on the shorts near the bottom of the leg looks great.

We rarely get to see the forest green uniforms at home because they use them for away games and a lot of UH basketball away games are not televised.

Also with “WARRIORS” on the front, I hope UH is making the steps necessary to create a uniform nickname:

    Men – “WARRIORS”

    Women – retain “RAINBOW WAHINE”

  53. Ipu Man November 16, 2010 10:53 am

    Tommui: Lime green and…

“NCAA re #43 – and also Aloha print!” bb unis!

Wonder if Rainbow Cliff wore them…hmmmm?

  54. Ralph November 16, 2010 10:53 am

Kazz did you wear Raider Black?

  55. gigi-hawaii November 16, 2010 10:54 am

  57. jeezy33 November 16, 2010 10:55 am

Hopefully Oregon St doesn’t swoop in on Kyle Washington.

  58. RupertDaStupert November 16, 2010 10:56 am

I like the black uniforms. It has a psychological imposing look to them. Whether you go to war or play an opponent, psychology has a great effect on the opponent. To some of you, black may seem ugly but I liked it when our football team wears black and the black/green helmets. They look mean and imposing. Maybe if Gib trimmed the black with some Aloha print like the Fab Five wore, it would make some of you happy. Gib thinks like June Jones.

  59. Ipu Man November 16, 2010 11:00 am

    CoolEthan:

    ‘Ipu-

The TSA has officially changed there name to T&A.’

OK, since I did not mention TSA specifically, you

must have a joke in there…what does T&A now

    stand for?

  60. NCAA November 16, 2010 11:02 am

    Aloha print? YES!

How about some kapa designed uni’s. It has to stand out very prominently.

  61. Ipu Man November 16, 2010 11:05 am

    RupertDaStupert:

You are right, it would look silly if our police swat

teams had hibiscus prints all over their black unis…

But then again, it would make for a more friendly

    police unit…

  62. NCAA November 16, 2010 11:07 am

    Mr. RupertDaStupert,

Black is okay, but UH should go with their dark green color. Does Boise wear black uni’s?

A rainbow at night is not black.

  63. Ipu Man November 16, 2010 11:09 am

Maybe someone in hair design can give all

    the players rainbow hair-doos…

  64. PONO November 16, 2010 11:09 am

Any updates on the recruiting front? If you’re in the know share your knowledge.

  65. Kazz November 16, 2010 11:12 am

    BTW,

Can anyone tell me WHY Hiram got a foul during that debacle between Zane Johnson and #0 for CMU???

As soon as the shoving started my mind went blank as I just started yelling un-Godly things to the CMU players from my first row seats.

It was confusing and I DVR’d the game at home but haven’t watched it yet. It was just horrible and confusing as Zane still had one foul afterwards.

  66. NCAA November 16, 2010 11:14 am

A mascot to excite the crowd looks like to be the missing piece.

  67. Kazz November 16, 2010 11:14 am

What is MORE imposing to an opposing team is a LOUD and INTENSE crowd rooting against them and the home team beating you on the court to backup everything.

Besides, I forget who posted it years ago on the blog, but there was some sort of survey or research done and it showed that teams that wear black tend to get penalized MORE than teams in lighter colors.

  68. Kazz November 16, 2010 11:15 am

    NCAA,

A mascot that can teach the student section how to “Dougie” would be the missing piece. 😆

  69. jm2375 November 16, 2010 11:17 am

Wish I could’ve seen the first several minutes of the game! 😈

  70. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 11:22 am

Didn’t Central-Michigan get penalized 50% more often than the Bows, though?

  71. RupertDaStupert November 16, 2010 11:23 am

NCAA, I see your point. But I view it from the point of psychology. IF black makes us look meaner, than it helps our school color green look meaner. Any advantage we can use over our opponents I go for. If trash talking unsettles the opponents, by all means get into their heads to distract them. Hawaii has never won a national title in the three major sports in basketball, baseball, football. I’ll try anything whether it be psychological warfare, physical superiority, trash talking, etc. If Boise thinks a blue field helps them win, more power to them. By the way, I get mixed reviews on Hawaii Five-O last night. The Nielson ratings has Five-O winning it. Other reviews has a confused explanation. I fell asleep last night so tapped into the CBS/Five-O homepage and watched the episode. Man, good stuff.

  72. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 11:23 am

Oh wait.. maybe they made 505% more FG attempts over the Bows… got my stats confused, I think.

  73. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 11:23 am

    yikes… that’s 50% …not 505%… lol … just seemed that way.

  76. Michigan Warrior November 16, 2010 11:34 am

Sorry, guys. I’ve been drifting in and out of consciousness all day. Just running on fumes. And I must admit… I closed my eyes during a couple of commercials, and woke up with chunks of the game gone by.

I thought those were WAC officials, since the whistles kept going off. I think there were over 40 fouls called between the two teams. Crazy. But glad we got that kind of a win under our belt.

  77. gigi-hawaii November 16, 2010 11:36 am

I wondered why it was a rather low-scoring game.

  78. Michigan Warrior November 16, 2010 11:39 am

    On free-throws:

    UH was 19-25

    CMU was 14-18

  79. papajoe2 November 16, 2010 11:41 am

I watched the game last night but fell a sleep at halftime and woke up after the start of the second half. Game was still going on while I slept but then went silent. My digital cable went off. By the time I thought of using the other tv with regular cable, the next teams were already playing so I didn’t know who won until early this morning. Being the first time seeing this team, I was disappointed in the commentators not mentioning who came in on substitutions or who was playing at the time. I didn’t know one player from the other for the Warriors except for Amis, Thompson and Kurtz. I found out who Josh Thomas was and also Johnson but the rest was hard to tell. Seeing very little of the 2nd half and the frequent substitutions also contributed to having a hard time knowing who was who.

  80. Michigan Warrior November 16, 2010 11:43 am

I liked Hawaii Five-0. It was the first time this season that I was actually on the edge of my seat. And it happened a couple of times during the show. I even actually dodged a couple of times when the bullets started flying!

  81. RupertDaStupert November 16, 2010 11:45 am

Adolf Hitler had his SS wear black because it looked mean and imposing. He wanted his army, the wermacht to wear black. But the army generals balked. They said black is so hard to see at night, their own soldiers might accidently shoot themselves. His advisors agreed so Hitler deferred. Yes black might not be a rainbow at night but I’ll do anything to win. June Jones stopped calling his football team ‘Rainbow’. Nothing wrong with that if he thought it didn’t sound ‘mean’ enough. He changed the logo to the tapa ‘H’. Nothing wrong with that. He changed the uniforms to black. And I see nothing wrong with that as long as the purpose of it is to help us win. By the way mentioning Hitler by no means I endorse him. He was a horrible madman, one of the most evil men of all time. My point is why are some of you so hung up on green. We can still keep green, but why is adding black so wrong? I been watching UH football for almost half a century. My heart is broken all the years we never came close to a national title. Black may not help but why would it hurt?

  82. Kazz November 16, 2010 11:46 am

    Black is not ugly.

It just a GIMMICK color that doesn’t truly represent UH or Hawaii. I caught onto UH in 2002 when the green was still evident and the black uniforms came along a later. I didn’t care, but did think that it was odd. Then finally Under Armour gave the football team a dark green top and white bottom with dark green trim and it’s like a light went off in my head. My God… WHAT IS WRONG WITH GREEN AND WHITE???? WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR SCHOOL COLORS???

I got my education at UH, I met some good people along the way going to school there, I was born and raised and I swear to God I will DIE here in Hawaii. A light went off in my head and it’s not rocket science.

Anyway, playing good football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, etc… that’s what matters in the end.

Blue is not an imposing color and those UGLY yellow and light green colors Oregon sports are not imposing either, but tell me no team would be intimidated to play teams like that.

When the game starts all colors might as well be gray because the level of performance is all that matters.

As for marketing? People buy ANYTHING from a program that wins consistently and isn’t that what we all want?

Black is a gimmick. They say merchandise sales went up when the logo changed (which I do LOVE the H logo)… merchandise sold because we were winning with Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan….

    Winning sells.

  83. Kazz November 16, 2010 11:48 am

    A rainbow at night?

I’d be impressed and CONCERNED at the same time.

  84. NCAA November 16, 2010 11:48 am

    Ms. gigi-hawaii,

Why was it a low scoring game?

  85. Kazz November 16, 2010 11:50 am

Even though I never watched him play, I’d like to see someone challenge the toughness of a “Rainbow Warrior” with the likes of Al Noga.

  86. NCAA November 16, 2010 11:51 am

    Kazz,

    Personal Fouls…. UH 18 – Them 23

  88. RupertDaStupert November 16, 2010 11:59 am

I think I am pretty unbiased. I like many Republicans and Democrats in office. I understand the feelings of liberals, moderates and conservatives. In my “I feel unbiased” opinion, none of the shows at 9pm monday night come close in quality to Hawaii Five-O. The scripts are good, the acting crisp, the action big screen quality, the chemistry between McGarrett, Danno, Chin Ho, and Kono is fabulous. If I thought Five-O stunk, I would keep my mouth shut! You bloggers I respect very much. If you hate black, I respect you. I just stating my opinion after watching 50 years of UH football.

  89. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 12:00 pm

    Turnovers…. UH 20 … THEM 12

Probably the worst of the Stats…

Although Central Michigan went to the basket way more often 55 to 39… they both had 21 baskets. While it wasn’t that obvious during the game, UH clearly played smarter, more patiently and went for the better percentages. Not bad for a team with 3 Seniors of which only 2 are usually on the floor at any given time.

  90. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 12:05 pm

Oh yeah.. 3 seniors and only 2 juniors. This is a young team that will only get better as the seasons go by. Looks like we’re back on track… … Now if we can only get those tracks to lead to the Stadium and Stan Sheriff, eh? What’s happening with the rail, anyway?

  91. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 16, 2010 12:06 pm

i like the slightly darker green and white…only problem is if they ask people to blackout the stadium…if you think its hard to get people to wear a lighter color like green, silver, white while most tailgate in the sun, try getting them to wear black.

my hs colors were green/white too…just a preference for me i guess.

  93. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball November 16, 2010 12:13 pm

  95. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 12:18 pm

  96. Cheyah! November 16, 2010 12:22 pm

I see a lot of people wear UH merchandise that is black and that includes myself. Whether it’s school colors or not, it is a part of UH Athletics now because of football. I have no problem with it because if it gets fans to wear more UH gear because they prefer black then so be it.

I really don’t mind if it’s green, white, gray or black.

    Just Win Baby!

    Go Warriors!

    Go Rainbow Wahine!

  98. Ralph November 16, 2010 12:27 pm

MIH 55 shots to 39 favoring the opponent works only if the opponent misses, no defense should allow the opponent that many opportunities. An ugly win but it is a W in the column. To win against better opponents we got to limit the number of shots and cut down on TO.

  99. Michigan Warrior November 16, 2010 12:30 pm

Our team is young and they’ll learn from it. I’m just glad to see them scrap to the end.

    CBS: Hawaii Five-0

    – 10.342 million viewers

    – 2.8/8 A18-49

    NBC: Chase

    – 4.565 million viewers

    – 1.2/3 A18-49

  101. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 12:38 pm

    Ralph….

Out of their 55 attempts, Central-Mich made 25 attempts from well beyond the arch(6-25). Hawaii, on the other hand, only made 11 3pt attempts(4-11). Obviously many of those 25 attempts were somewhat desperate attempts to catch up in a hurry.

  102. NCAA November 16, 2010 12:40 pm

    Mr Ralph,

The Rainbow Warriors BB team allowed 59 and 62 shots in their first two games of the tourney.

  103. duffer November 16, 2010 12:55 pm

    Coach shot 92.

  104. NCAA November 16, 2010 12:56 pm

Bright at slotback? Now that is huge!

  105. Ralph November 16, 2010 1:04 pm

but I’m comparing their number of shots to ours, 55 to 39, to lazy to look at the other games in which NCAA stated that the opponents took 59 and 62 shots, how many did we take, not every team going to miss their shots like CM. We didn’t take 3’s because our wings couldn’t get open, big difference. CM was athletic and quick.

  106. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 1:06 pm

I wanna see all our senior Warriors in good health come Senior day against UNLV, Dec 4… and I want them all to get some playing time. That means our Offense will need to put up a bunch of points early on in the game.

    Go WARRIORS!

  107. kev-1 November 16, 2010 1:06 pm

Hate to be insensitive, but people need to quit crying about the black uniforms in any UH sports. Its not like UH abandoned the green. Relax already. It sells. Get over it. Things change.

Okay, maybe that came across as insensitive, but we should embrace it already. I’m not saying abandon the old for the new. Bring it all back. I would love to see us one week wearing all black, then the next in some throw-back rainbow gear. And then the next week in all white, and then the next . . . silver. Yup, I said it, silver.

  108. kev-1 November 16, 2010 1:09 pm

besides, the black uniforms on the b-ball team looked sick last night.

  109. Kazz November 16, 2010 1:09 pm

    Not crying about black.

    But silver… I will act like a 3 year old! 😆

  110. NCAA November 16, 2010 1:10 pm

    Mr. Ralph,

And I was just basing it on what you wrote: “no defense should allow the opponent that many opportunities.”

  111. Kazz November 16, 2010 1:11 pm

    BTW,

The retro thing is big with the young folk nowadays.

That light green and yellow trucker baseball hat with the simple “H” on it from back in the Les Murakami era is selling well and I’ve seen quite a few UH students wearing them.

There is a hat store in Pearlridge that sells them.

  112. Pride. November 16, 2010 1:12 pm

Sean Shigematsu has gained 30 pounds since the start of training camp, and is expected to compete for playing time next season.

Reminds me of the days that Hawaii boys had the right tackle position locked up at UNLV for about sven years. Mika Kane’s dad was Hansel was UNLV’s starting right tackle for four years, then Sean’s dad Delroy locked up the job for three years right afterwards. Those were good days. UNLV also had Roosevelt’s Eliu Elisara at linebacker and Brian Weisbarth at defensive tackle. Farrington’s Sao Vaefaga was the starting defensive end for UNLV in those days, ’78 – ’80. Sao is Vince Manuwai’s uncle.

  113. madeinhawaii November 16, 2010 1:14 pm

    Ralph.

In the prevous games, the number of shots taken by both teams were closer.. this is the one which is lopsided. The difference, I think, was in the number of steals and 3 point attempts by C-Mich. They were definitely tenacious on defense. A good test for our Warriors and one that I’m sure will make them polish their play making abilities.

  114. skycap November 16, 2010 1:20 pm

Maybe the reason for Black Uniform they knew the starting time was to late for most Hawaii

    Old Diver,

According to UH’s website, it sounds like next season will be Bell’s last season at UH.

    1 season at Nevada

2 seasons at Santa Rosa JC

    this season at UH

Next season will be his 5th and final season of eligibility. The Scout Bowl was crucial for him to get some notice and it is good that a good performance in the Scout Bowl is being rewarded with reps. That reinforces to the entire team how important the Scout Bowl is every season.

  131. NCAA November 16, 2010 2:32 pm

    Mr. Ralph,

Not really. It’s still 55 shots.

  132. Pride. November 16, 2010 2:40 pm

Is Darius Bright a bigger version of Greg Salas? That would be ridiculous. Too fast to cover with a linebacker and too big to cover with a safety. So what do you do when you have a receiver like Bright that’ll run you over on one play and then comeback the next play with a guy like Sampson who will run right by you. It appears that we have a lot of good looking wides and slots waiting in the wings.I hope that they all get to play.

  133. Pride. November 16, 2010 2:42 pm

I wonder what London Sapolu would look like as a blocking fullback, just for a change of pace on offense once in a great while.

  134. NorthShoreFan November 16, 2010 2:56 pm

Pride, if he got the speed like a Rosehill or Monico an the blocking technique/skills of a lineman…it would make for an interesting experiment no?

  135. d1島 November 16, 2010 2:58 pm

I hope that they all get to play.

I hope they get reps with QB1 in the next 3 games instead of the first 3 games of next season!

  136. Pride. November 16, 2010 3:12 pm

#134 – Probably doesn’t have their speed, but I’m sure he can block. Just remember us closing out a season a few years back against San Diego State. We had Reagan Mauia at fuulback when he was still 350 pounds. Remember the look on the faces of SDSU’s front seven. They wanted no part of Mr. Mauia. I always felt since then that Mauia was a good element to add to your offense. Mauia, Ilaoa, Keliikipi, it’s all the same. Throw, throw, throw, throw, and then punch’em in the mouth. Throw, throw, punch, throw, punch, throw, throw, throw, throw, throw, throw, punch, punch.

  137. Pride. November 16, 2010 3:13 pm

#135 – Too funny d1. But yes you’re right. Unless of course they are redshirting.

  138. NCAA November 16, 2010 3:14 pm

The good thing is that they are here and will be put to good use in spring practice.

I’m looking at an atmosphere that is evolving for Warrior football. The atmosphere of working hard, dedication, winning, focusing, attitude, and teamwork. The top teams have that atmosphere. The confidence to perform instinctively. How do you do that? It’s the atmosphere. The atmosphere of studying, repetition, refining your technique, and knowing your assignment and alignment.

The power to instill your will on your opponents. How do you do that? It’s the atmosphere. The atmosphere to train hard in the weight room, exceed your coaches expectations, make sacrifices to better yourself physically, and visualize your strengths.

    Breathe in this atmosphere Warriors.

  139. kev-1 November 16, 2010 3:22 pm

I don’t know . . . I’m not sure if I like moving Bright to the slot. This offense is in dire need of a legitimate deep threat, and Bright would finally provide them with that. Bradley just has not been the force he was before he got injured, and I was really looking forward to the height advantage on the outside. You have to admit, the deep ball is the missing piece of the puzzle. Plus, just because would be another tall slot like Salas, doesn’t mean he’ll have the same success. I don’t thing he is as skilled as Salas is route-wise, and hands-wise.

Leave um on the outside so we can see some long bombs next year.

  140. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 3:28 pm

They’re looking at Miah Ostrowski, Allen Sampson, Terence Bright and, perhaps, Darius Bright in the slot. Also Samson Anguay who works out after practices, is looking good. Anguay joins the team in January.

    ST,

If UH pulls the trigger on independence, isn’t the WAC dead in the water?

  170. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:00 pm

From Central Michigan’s scout message board regarding last night’s game:

And mainlanders wonder why Hawaii fans have a “chip” on their shoulder…

That’s what happens when you play Hawaii though. Remember how MSU cancelled their football deal with them because the refereeing was so one sided. It will help us in the long run to learn to overcome adversity. I like our team alot and we will only get better. I thought hawaiis coach was a punk.

    Apparently a Hawaii fan responded:

    1. The refs weren’t local. They ref games in the WAC, Mountain West and Southland conferences. Hardly a “homer” crew.

    2. MSU cancelled their football deal because they couldn’t afford to lose to a non-BCS team so late in the season. Ever wonder why Boise and others can’t get MSU or other “big-boys” to play them during the regular season? And sorry, even that crew wasn’t local. If you were at the game or watched it, you’d see that the refereeing sucked, but it went both ways, just like last night’s game. Keep in mind our starting point guard fouled out because he got a technical foul that should’ve been called on the player that was involved in the “altercation,” Zane Johnson.

    3. Hawaii’s coach is a punk? You base that on what?

Anyway, I think your team is talented and seems destined to make the big dance. Lots of potential. Zeigler is worth the price of admission. Kid is amazing! And he’s got a great supporting cast.

Good luck on the rest of the season. I’d like to say I hope we meet up in the NCAA’s, but I think our team is a year or two away from making it.

Another CMU fan responded to the above as such:

As for you, Mr. Hawaii, the islands are notorious for ‘home cooking’. It happens way too often, so you can expect your opponents to point that way when bad calls are made, whether it’s happening or not. If Hawai’i fans are upset when opponents talk about ‘island officiating’, talk to your AD and demand better officials on a regular basis.

  171. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:01 pm

From “juiced bats” to one sided officiating…

The mainland believes Hawaii has no business winning at anything.

  172. wafan November 16, 2010 6:02 pm

  173. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 6:11 pm

    Kazz:

I’m quite shocked. I didn’t know Central Michigan had a fan board.

  174. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 6:14 pm

See, I’ve traveled all over. Been to the Pit. Been to North Carolina. Been to Pauley Pavilion. Hey, went to games at Madison Square Garden as a kid. That’s why I sorta-sorta appreciate Boise State fans. They don’t whine.

I remember games in the Pit. One of the greatest places to watch a game. Great teams by Dave Bliss, back in the day. And yet, it was an endless chorus of: “Aw, come on, Ref, call it both ways.” And that’s when the Lobos had, like, a 15 free-throw advantage.

  175. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 6:17 pm

Wyoming basketball fans used to be funny. They held up newspapers when the visiting team was introduced. With each name, they’d yell: “So What,” or “Who cares?” Then when the intros were over, they’d crumple the papers and throw them at the visiting team.

Or they did that trick where they would light a coin then throw it at a coach.

OK, that wasn’t cool. But it was funny.

  176. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:32 pm

    ST,

Actually, I think CMU’s scout board has more activity in it than Nevada and LaTech’s…

  177. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:34 pm

I like the sign idea not too keen on throwing stuff at the other team though.

Hmmm… I thought the heated coin thing was only a Fresno State “tradition”???

  178. bb November 16, 2010 6:35 pm

I came up with the idea at work and a few beers later prior to the game was the poster was finished up. I wasn’t feeling the whole ESPN acronym thing and I am certain that the juiced up students would not mind as well. Beer sales must have been very good last night as the whole section that I was in had many empty cups by halftime.

The time i spent paid off as I scored a beer from a random fan that wanted to take pictures with it and his friends.

That lady sitting amongst us was my sister in law. This was probably her first sporting event in years. She was a CMU grad and her father taught there as well. She wore the maroon shirt but had the UA Green wristbands, both and team tattoos of both logos on both cheeks–she did post graduate stuff at UH. She was warned that she would be coming to a game with a bunch of drunk, crazed fans.

Its too bad they cant make more games like these. It really does provide a true home court advantage and hopefully they do this again next year. I’m 10000% certain that my sign would get dirtier looks and perhaps ejection at regularly scheduled events.

Time to conform back to the masses. Maybe an occasional yell or scream for the rest of the season….

  179. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:35 pm

Interesting how a coach can lose a game to Hawaii, bitch and moan all the way, and blame officiating as one of the primary reason for their loss – ie, Michigan State, Cincinati, etc. Oh, I forgot Nevada and Kapernick!!! And, their fans eat all of that up and propogate the myth.

Absolutely no credit to UH coaching staff and players.

  182. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:38 pm

Was cool to see Neil Everett last night.

Sitting in the front, I made sure he saw me. I shook his hand and yelled “HOWZIT!!!!” right in his face about three times and soon his polite smile turned into a look of concern for his well-being.

HA! Best “dare” I ever accepted!!!!

    That made my night!!!!!!! 😆

  183. A-House November 16, 2010 6:41 pm

Looks like the Big West is dangling the carrot to UH – now, what to do?

I say, go WAC with football only and move everything else to the Big West in 2013. As Garret says, make sense $$$ wise – savings to delete travel to places east of California – and overall, better competition. Am sure that the other WAC schools will welcome the savings traveling to Hawaii.

  184. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:41 pm

    A-House,

They all talk to each other up there…

Last softball season, Troy’s coach got all irritated at the umpires for illegal pitch calls on their pitcher and clearly yelled “we were warned about the officiating out here!!!”…

    19 Wahine runs later … 😆

  185. Kazz November 16, 2010 6:44 pm

I mean seriously… who warned mainland teams about the softball officiating in Hawaii???

    Hmm… me thinks t’was UCLA. 😆

  186. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 6:45 pm

I think it’s UH’s preference to go to Big West in everything but football.

But WAC, as you can imagine, isn’t too keen on that.

From what I have viewed on TV from 1966 to present, the mainland refs are bad every where – Big 10 to SEC to PAC 10 to Big 12 – they must know who should win ( like a conference person telling the refs, it is important that Ohio St ( example only ) make it to the national championship game ).

The refs are worst to accept that and call the game – speaking of another “prostitute”.

  196. J November 16, 2010 7:51 pm

Late to the conversation but I’ll add two or three cents to the mix.

Green & White, it’s pretty simple, those are the official school colors. You wear the colors that represent your school.

Rainbows: From what I recall, June Jones made the change, the school didn’t regarding official nickname. No single person is larger than the institution. When I refer to the football, I just say Hawai‘i or I’ll go with Rainbow Warriors or ‘Bows. If I’m talking about the Warriors, I’m talking about Kamehameha or possibly Golden State but since the NBA is dead to me since the Sonics left Seattle…

Until Jones arrived and seemed to want to change the team to Raiders West, fans didn’t have to figure out what color to wear as part of their game week ritual, some still don’t. Green it is, period.

If you really want the edge, go with red.

enjoyed the UH game last night…err, this morning. hope they keep it up.

the silver surfers. nah. i’m happy with the black, but much prefer the JJ-era black uniforms.

i appreciated the coach explaining why the d couldn’t blitz, but all the more reason to get a good plan for the hurry-up offense.

  198. A-House November 16, 2010 8:45 pm

Here’s a plan if UH goes “indy”.

NCAA requires teams to play “up to 12 games” per year not counting bowl games.

Thus, if the “indies” can all agree to play each other during the October/November time frame with bye weeks and load up with “out of conference” games in September and late Nov/Dec time frame that could make the 11 or 12 limit.

Schedule the “bottom feeders” from all conferences as they will not be involved in any championship games. They will be free to travel or host a game and it could be considered their bowl game.

    A-house,

It might be interesting to take a poll of all conference AD’s who think their FB teams will be “bottom feeders” 3-5 years out.

    Do they ask their HC’s?

  201. walter November 16, 2010 9:06 pm

    woo hoo

  202. Old Diver November 16, 2010 9:16 pm

If UH joins the BWC in all sports other than football how will the rest of the WAC schools stop us? Throw us out of the WAC? They had their chance to improve their programs and failed to step up to the plate. Of the remaining WAC schools we have the most invested in our athletic department which means we have the most to lose.

  203. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 9:20 pm

I saw Leroy Lutu Jr. today. Think he’s happy for them, but he’s pretty pumped up about his football future. He’s going to be getting a lot of playing time next season. I think he’s going to be the next Mana Silva.

  204. Not an Expert November 16, 2010 9:21 pm

    ST:

The WAC better not demand Hawaii to keep all the teams in the conference when they are bringing in Denver not for football but whatever else they bring to the conference. Vice versa and if UH is given an ultimatum that will show how Benson has used Hawaii for his vacation type business trips to the islands. In addition it will reveal all those nay sayers with fork tongues. “Hawaii is too expensive for us schools on the mainland to go and play in there.”

I’m pretty sure the BW conference are aware how the Warrior Nation on the west coast will help with attendance for these sports and assist the bottom line numbers also.

Having Hawaii in the BW may help the schools in recruiting and make their teams stronger and in turn make the conference stronger which might make them as competitive as the Pac-12. If it turns out this way the PAC 12 may in the future consider having Hawaii as a conference member although football will need to do its part.

UH has some leverage now that the WAC cannot afford to lose another football playing school. To me staying in the WAC for football is the route UH needs to take for the immediate future. Thus having to schedule only 5 to 6 additional games. However if the WAC starts losing TV money and exposure, this will have an affect on recruiting and create a downward spiral for the conference and its teams. If this scenario becomes reality UH might need to go independent sooner rather than later.

  205. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 9:27 pm

I think the WAC would be annoyed if UH’s non-football sports left.

I mean, if you’re the WAC, wouldn’t you want to have the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team?

I think if UH totally left the WAC, the WAC would be like, “Are you sure?” And then five minutes later, it would be on the phone with the Mountain West saying: “OK, we can merge now. Hawaii’s gone.”

As I must keep reminding people: Boise, Fresno, Nevada, San Diego State, Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico are not Hawaii’s friends. Each one has a fingerprint on the knife.

  206. Not an Expert November 16, 2010 9:33 pm

Off the subject. Everyone should take advantage of the Roth IRA. After 5 years and being 59 1/2 years and older all interest earning can be used tax free. Prior to that your money grows tax deferred and if you are younger than 59 1/2 years old and may need money, you can access your principal deposits without any income taxes or penalty. However don’t use your earning till those 2 requirements are met because you will pay income tax on the earnings and be subject to the 10% penalty levied by the IRS.

Also upon death your account can pass to your beneficiaries tax free although they will need to withdraw the funds according to the life expectancy tables.

  207. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 9:36 pm

I’m fairly certain the UH leaders want to stay in the WAC for football and move the other sports to the Big West.

But be careful what you wish.

First, despite the nostalgic picture Pops Leahey paints, the Big West isn’t the Big West of 10, 15 years ago. California schools have no money. So, UH will end up having to pay travel subsidies for a lot of sports. That’s a guarantee. UH will have to pay subsidies and not get any subsidies back. And whether you think that’s the price to pay or not, I really don’t think one school should pay higher dues than the others.

Also, the competition is going to be a lot tougher in baseball. Will ticket sales increase? Enough to cover the travel subsidies?

  208. Stephen Tsai November 16, 2010 9:38 pm

    Not an Expert:

Hey, that’s pretty good advice on the Roth IRA. How much are you allowed to contribute annually?

  209. Not an Expert November 16, 2010 9:40 pm

If the WAC and MWC would want to merge without UH have them payoff UH to get out UH out of their hair. Divorce settlement but make sure UH takes them for all they can due to the lost of future earnings.

  210. Not an Expert November 16, 2010 9:43 pm

Anyone who has earned income and earn less than approximately $100,000 as an individual and $179,000 as a married couple can deposit up to $5,000 a year. If you are 50 and older you can deposit $6,000 a year.

I think UH should go ahead with the Big West move and dominate WAC football until it falls apart completely. Once that happens, provided UH is a winner in conference every year, someone will want us in their conference. This is a change to my previous thoughts on football independence, as I thought that was the way to go. I am starting to believe that is too tough a route. I think I am reading too much of Tsai’s writing. He’s changing my mind.

Completely unrelated . . . anyone ever watch the UFL? I saw a game the other night. Not bad. Its a league of “what ever happened to . . .?” I saw all kinds of players I wondered about. There are also a bunch of players that are looking to develop and end up in the NFL. I wonder if Colt ever considered the UFL?

Heck, I wonder if Colt even thinks he is going to play football anymore? Hope he is not still in Hawaii. Nobody will want him if they don’t see him working his tail off training or something. Maybe I’m a bit naive, but I think his agent should be shopping him around more than we have heard he has. Of course, we don’t hear nearly anything, so maybe he is. Just really want to see him get his opportunity on the field some day.

evening all just taking some time to chime in a few comments

color doesn’t bother me as long as the warriors and wahines show up and come out to play. remember old school coaches saying look good play good.

very impressed with the warrior bball team last night, they continue to battle, attack the offensive end and play decent defense. like the switching defensive schemes often confusing CSU enough keeping them off balance and out of rhythm. this present team plays very well together. keep it up and congrats,

  221. koakane™ November 16, 2010 11:24 pm

oh about other team saying they come over and getting homered. so what UH encounters the same when they go to the mainland. no matter what it hasn’t changes. all teams come to the 808 expecting to win with out having to earn it. I’ve heard this for over the 40 years of going to UH sporting events. all teams coming to play UH wines when they lose.

What burns me is other schools feeling they need to be payed subsidies for playing here. Thats bull manure. No one offers UH to play on the mainland so how is this is fair. Equal treatment.

Okay, I’ll bite. What does the CMU “sign language” mean? That is, other than Central Michigan University.

I like the Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine as team names. Consider some of the other teams and then look at these names. Ducks? Beavers? Hokies? Snufflepups?

As for team colors – emerald green and white with the stylistic rainbow logo carried by a warrior.

Maybe all the teams should play nekkid like the gladiators used to – that should fill up the spectator areas – unless, of course, we have to come nekkid as well. Think I’ll invest in PPV.

The officiating last night was equal opportunity sucky. No homer-ing at all. Good Boy Hiram fouling out?

Don’t forget Thursday is the final home game for the 2010 Wahine volleyball team which includes Senior Night.

    RE: black uniforms.

How about the UW wearing black uniforms for its next home game? So much for the purple! Black with purple sleeves. I think the numbers are either white or gold.

What does black have to do with the UW? Nothing. Except the players like them because, according to them, it makes them look good and the feel meaner.

Where have we heard that before?

I wonder if the ‘Dawgs will wear their black when UH visits next year.

  231. wafan November 17, 2010 3:59 am

Do not know where the rumor began about the UH/UW game being moved to Qwest Field like lthe WSU game was. Nothing up here. Does not mean something is not in the works, though.

Only reason to move it would be financing from the Seahawks. Why give up all the benefits of having a home game (concessions, home field, etc.)?

So this is an established tradition– not just Gib. Plus, it looks good and the players like it (and it is done by other teams as well– in fact, there is a line of matte or flat black uni’s that a few teams use that is blacker than black).

Not looking too far ahead but I honestly can’t wait to see the new faces on the Offensive Line for next year. We lose Tiwanak, Letuli, LaCount, Ginlack, and Thomas. We’ll still have a pretty solid group returning with extensive playing time in Hansen, Lefiti, and Leonard but I really would like to see the young guys step into a starting role. I though David Lefotu was the marquee recruit for last years class, but haven’t heard much about him. Seems like Chauncey, Jordan, Sean, and the others have been getting noticed more. What’s the scoops on him?

Wow Darius Bright in the slot…are we trying to kill DB’s. I think Ostrowski and Sampson will cause headaches with their speed and juke-ability in the slot. Darius is huge and is more of a tight-end clone to me, having him play slot is like straight abuse for a DB or S, ala Greg Salas…

Speaking of the Black Uniforms, I love em for both football and basketball. People complaining about making it hard to see the names and numbers, I don’t think so, I think they are perfectly fine. The basketball team looked good in them and I think having the all white, all black and also an all Warrior Green with white lettering and numbers would be pimp. I also think it’s cool how the got the tapa print band going along the side of the pant, I wish the football uniform could bring that back! Anyway, it just looks good and gives an intimidating presence on the court or field!

#241. I tried responding to Ferd yesterday, but I am a non-tech guy and I don’t know how to get on his blog. This is what I had to say:

    To Ferd:

Agree with you. Going independent means scheduling headaches and money problems.

Remaining in the WAC is the answer. Stay put until things settle down. Everything is in a state of flux now. No need hurry. The sun will rise and it will set. Why make it hard on the athletic department and add extraneous problems.

Remaining in the WAC gives UH structure. It will not have to worry too much about scheduling. Just make sure some high powered teams are on the schedules to keep interest up.

It is not the conference that matters. It is the teams and that they are winning. UH should focus on developing winning teams, and not what conference the teams are playing in.

Winning is all that matters. Got it? Repeat after me: Winning is all that matters.

This season’s basketball team is a winner. Attendance at Stan Sheriff Center is going to jump! Expect some sell-outs!

If anything, this talk about going independent, remaining in the WAC, and joining other conferences is just news fodder for the media.

Going independent is a big step backward. UH is going back to where it first started. UH was independent once. It worked hard to get in a conference.

The WAC accepted UH. UH should be glad the WAC welcomed us. It built great programs in the WAC like baseball, men and womens’ volleyball, football and now girls softball.

MWC doesn’ want UH, citing travel distances. In fact, it set itself up to exclude UH when it was formed. Do you mean to say UH is going to try to get into a conference that doesn’t welcome it? UH was shafted once and maybe it is going to get shafted again by the same schools that shafted it earlier. Give me a break! Getting burned one time is ok. The possibility of getting burned a second time is repugnant!

Nice looking blog. But what I really came to tell you is about an automated traffic software I found, so I thought I would share it. “Thousands of Dollars Per Day” sounds a little outrageous, but a few hundred dollars per day looks reasonable. Check it out at: http://bit.ly/moneymony

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  271. meble stolowe November 27, 2010 2:16 am

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
