No storybook ending
Yes, we know many UH fans are angry, frustrated and disappointed. And, yes, many won’t take it anymore and are demanding the Warriors make a declaration of independence.
But, really, how was it supposed to end after Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada decided to secede from the WAC to join the Mountain West Conference? Was there an expectation that San Diego State, UNLV or a Pac-10 school was going to be part of the WAC expansion plans? Of course not. Look at the map. There were no available schools with FBS memberships or aspirations west of San Antonio. Sure, Montana would have been a nice addition. But faced with the option of upgrading to the higher division and adding women’s sports, or staying put and contending for FBC championships, Montana chose the more fiscally agreeable second door.
That leaves the WAC to continue to play Moneyball, searching for the next best prospect. The cycle could end if the MWC would stop poaching WAC teams, and instead find and develop their own teams. But that’s as likely as the Yankees not going after free agents.
The problem is teams do not want to be in leagues that are spread the length of the Mainland, which is approximately the distance between Hawaii and the West Coast. It is why UH wasn’t asked to be part of the WAC secessionists that formed the MWC in 1999. It is why when the MWC added four more teams, the invitation list did not include UH. And it is why Boise, Fresno State, San Diego State, UNLV and Nevada won’t write letters of recommendations.
UH’s best hope is that the MWC extends an invitation, either fully or for football only (with UH’s non-football teams going to the Big West). But that only happens if the Big East grabs TCU, and Houston decides not to go to the MWC. One idea being floated is UH goes independent in football (with the rest going to the Big West) because that will make it an easier move should the MWC come calling. That’s comparable to a reporter quitting his newspaper job to be a free-lance writer just in case the New York Times calls. Best rule of the market: It’s easier to get a job when you have a job.
There have been discussions about UH going the independent route in football as opposed to being in a watered-down WAC. But that won’t fly with the Upper Campus without guarantees that it will be a sound financial move, and that means guaranteeing that the Warriors can play quality opponents in October and November, and secure a double-dip deal in which it can have both a national television contract while keeping pay-per-view revenue. Let’s hope the Boise game, which was televised on ESPNU, was not the test case.
It might not be popular, but the best thing would be for the Warriors to remain in the WAC for football, at least until the national picture gains clarity. That fills the middle schedule. They can load up on high RPI non-conference opponents, which is what people want, anyway. Would it hurt recruiting or attendance? Not if the Warriors have a chance to go 13-0 every year. People might say they go to games because of the opponent, but they want to leave with victories. And don’t forget that ESPN and the WAC are majority owners of the Hawaii Bowl.

Good to be in a conference, no matter how you look at the strength of teams that are joining.
It’s always secure feeling to be looking for a job while currently employed.
Just keep scheduling those strong OCC games.USC’s, Texas’s, whoever wants to pay.
If gotta go there, go there and get that budget deficit balanced make it positive.
I like conferences. I like player-of-the-week awards, and all-star teams and pre-season polls.
Ask Louisiana Tech and Utah State how tough it was to be an independent.
Would be nice to watch on K5 or at least listen to the Alum softball game. No Friday Night Lights tonight.

You’re right on that. Forget the Charleston Southerns and the other FBC schools. Play tough non-conference games and then go out and run the table in the WAC. There should be no excuse for UH not being the dominant football team in the WAC.

Yes, Conferences are nice. It’s like being surrounded by plenty of friends at school. That independent nerdy person at school always roamed the halls alone, ate lunch as a solo, and wouldn’t talk to anyone all day, unless asked a mathmatical or science question. ( hey, that’s me! hehe)
The one thing that I keep wondering is that all this talk about us staying in the WAC or going independent with football and joining the Big West for all other sports is I haven’t heard that we have been invited to join the Big West in any sport, or have I missed them asking us?
All the talk about Texas State getting $10 million in student fees eventually reminded me that SDSU already gets $10 million in Athletic Fees from their students.
About 6 years ago they just got $2 million, so their President let their students vote on a fee increase that would get them to $6 million per year. The students voted no…and the SDSU President then implemented the fee increase anyway!

SDSU used the money to upgrade its facilities and coaching staffs. Their basketball team now wins 20+ games and makes the NCAA tournament every year. The football team went from the bottom of the MWC to a 7-2 record that could win the MWC title if they beat TCU on Saturday.
So, Texas State will eventually get $10 million in student fees…SDSU gets that already and has shown how it can lead to success when spent wisely. This is happening in California, not just in Texas.
Yeppers. Doesn’t make sense at this current financial situation to be paying out big money for those small schools to come here. Actually doesn’t makes sense even if your piggy bank stash is full. Just add another piggy bank and keep filling it up.

CoolEthan their is no tv coverage of the Na Wahine Softball Alumnae game, they are showing the MBB game against the power house Montana State. I myself think they would get a better tv rating if the did the softball game instead.
The 2 texas teams really capture my attention about joining the conference. One important note about the state of Texas is they always have money to back up their talk.

What I find bothersome is how Utah, Nevada and Boise State surged past Hawaii.
I could see that with Fresno State, which always had a great fan following. The Red Wave was a force back in the Big West.
Back in the early 1990s, Hawaii was ahead of Utah. But then the Warriors won the Holiday Bowl, and everyone stepped up and UH went backward. Schools invested money in facilities; UH stopped taking partial qualifiers. I think someone once said the Warriors’ starting defensive line in 1992 wouldn’t have been admitted to UH under the revised rule.
Boise really took advantage of the Fiesta Bowl victory. The Broncos parlayed that into an outstanding recruiting class, particularly on defense.

Here’s what I posted on yesterday’s blog. Didn’t know it was going to be continued…
Actually, if we all think about it, many of these teams from the WAC that are finding success would’ve made the WAC an automatic qualifier IF the WAC had taken care of it’s own. We are partly to blame for not wanting to sign the first loyalty agreement before the MWC schools ran away. Now we want to complain about it. We should be complaining to the WAC front office for not promoting the conference as it should have been. The MWC has been agressive about it since day one. While, we’ve just sat back and let them zoom by.
Like I said, before Boise joined, it seemed as though Benson had the WAC’s best interests at heart. After Boise joined, he seemed to be so preocupied in Boise’s success, that it feels like he forgot about representing the rest of the conference.
We did it to ourselves for letting him get away with mediocrity. And we continue to do it to ourselves. I mean, c’mon… a D-IAA school in Texas pays nearly triple what we pay for in Activity Fees… and in a couple of years, that amount will double to $20 per semester hour.
We want a big time D-IA program, with all the respect and acknowledgements that come with it, but we can’t even fill the stadium, even with USC, or a nationally ranked team as our opponent. Our state doesn’t have a “UH Culture” yet. The whole state should be bleeding green. It should be nearly impossible to get tickets for games at the stadium, the SSC, the Les, Wahine Softball, etc. That would help us get out of the red and build the support our university needs. But, no… we have to be undefeated with just a couple of games to go in the season before we get that kind of community support. Oh yeah, sure, let’s go Indy and play a bunch of D-IAA schools, and see what kind of excitement that stirs, and what our home game attendance will be. Yup, we got fans scattered throughout the mainland, but we can’t even fill our own stadium at home. That’s probably another thing that TV people like ESPN looked at. Without Boise, no one else can fill their own stadiums. The assumption of a national tv fan base doesn’t look too appealing.
ST as of now there is only seven games that will be televised this season, but that is subject to change.

And I agree with #3 and #6… We shouldn’t be scheduling any lower division schools for football. I’d rather see us travel for a payday gig that we might possibly win, than stay home to pay/play a D-IAA team.

Agree, stay in the WAC for football, play tough OOC games and run the table in the WAC. Indy is not the way to go in FB. Wahine VB, should go indy or Big West, we need the competition for the NCAA championships, although there are quality opponents in the preseason tourneys.
It is sad to read that the football attendance is just slightly ahead of last year, especially considering that attendance was WAY up for the USC game and the team had such great success this year. Considering that UH had good attendance for the final game last season (Wisconsin) and this year UH has SJSU and UNLV left for home games, UH might have lower ticket sales and 13% lower PPV sales…during a very successful football season!
I know of one coach that would rather be in the Big West, reason being is better teams and better recruiting area.
I don’t think Big West wants to invite us cost too much travel for non-revenue sports.
Plus I don’t feel the BW competition is any better than in the WAC, with our Mens basketball on the rise, (and we will be filling the area sooner than later) I rather see us continue to play Utah State and New Mexico State.
By going Indy and to move to BW I feel UH is stepping backward.

As long as we are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, we will never get any respect or invitation. The only exception is if we become a consistent winner. That takes commitment, dedication, and $$s. It might help if the islands were to “float” closer to California, say about 10 miles, then travel cost may not be an issue. Regardless, we still need to do it on our own. No one is going to help us. We make our own destiny.

Hawaii don’t have a fan base across the U.S. like ND, Military schools or BYU.
It won’t be easy to schedule team to come to Hawaii in the month of October and November when everyone else is on Conference schedule. Just look at the schedule before Hawaii got in to WAC. Rainbows played mostly Div II teams like Linfield and Portland State.
Just wait out, with Texas school coming in the competition will come, with what 30,000+
students body at both Texas school they will have even more athletes to draw from.
Texas will be much better metro area than Boise or Fresno to go to shopping and sightseeing.
Bring On State of Texas… Maybe SMU, Rice or another Texan want to rejoing WAC…

and look where they are now… way, way past us Warriors, and Texas may even pass us soon as they join the WAC. They all do upgrade when you join WAC.
Too may people are not giving enough credit to WAC but we are just as good as anyone else. We as member of WAC just needs to keep upgrading and improve winning out of conference games.

June Jones helped us put UH Warriors on the map with Sugar Bowl trip to New Orleans in 2007!
And the city of New Orleans wants us back rather than Georgia fans who don’t spend $$$
The City told us we were a suprise guest who spend $$$ and tipped well than Georgia fans.
I being back to New Orleans a few times since Sugar Bowl and they’re still talking about our visit on that New Year Eve.
We can do it again, just like Boise and TCU are doing.

As this is a holy day for us, here is a passage that may apply to the state of change we see before us.

ST, I pretty much agree with everything you say above. However I’m not very confident about UH getting into the Big West for non-football sports. The Big West commissioner might like the idea but, as we’ve seen in the WAC’s case, that doesn’t mean the school presidents will agree. And when it comes to the Big West it will take a two-thirds majority i.e. 7 out of 9 to approve Hawaii’s membership. Until there’s some indication that vote will go UH’s way, our only realistic option is to keep working at building and strengthening the WAC.
Note that the MWC’s TV deal expires in 2015-2016, which means that they will be negotiating with the TV networks in 2014. Last time around, ESPN went after them and ignored the WAC, offering the MWC *much* more money than they ended up giving the WAC. However, CSTV/VS/mtn came up with $12 million/year and told them they could play their games on Saturdays, which they preferred over ESPN’s lower offer that required weekday games.
It was only *after* the MWC turned down ESPN that ESPN offered the WAC a contract. ESPN gave the WAC $4 million/year and required weekday games.
ESPN’s long-term plan for the Pacific Time Zone is to try to outbid Fox for the Pac-12 contract. If that happens, the WAC will no longer have time slots on ESPN. ESPN is already taking time slots away from the WAC and giving it to BYU. If ESPN doesn’t get the Pac-12, I am 100% sure that they will try to get the MWC again, which means they will dump the WAC.
So, people who say that UH has to stay with the WAC to keep being on ESPN ignores the likelihood that the WAC won’t be on ESPN much longer. The only reason that the WAC has ESPN now is that they were outbid for the Pac-10 and MWC…anyone want to bet that happens in the coming bidding wars?
Going indy is problematic because ESPN doesn’t love UH anymore. Under JJ, ESPN showed UH so many times during the Timmy Chang and Colt years, so UH probably could have gotten a BYU-like ESPN contract then. But 2 down years and the loss of their marketing hook with JJ resulted in ESPN not wanting UH as much as before…plus, UH hasn’t exactly performed well in its latest ESPN games (like BSU and wasn’t Wisconsin on ESPN?). SMU had 2 of its first 4 games on ESPN/ESPN2 (not ESPNU) and before the season UH had just 1 game on an ESPN channel (thanks to USC, UH wasn’t shut out by ESPN).
From what I’ve read, BYU is getting between $8 million and $12 million for their TV rights next year–they have ESPN plus they have full local TV rights for all games not on ESPN. If UH had half of that, going indy would be feasible (a *huge* step up from $400k that UH gets from the WAC). UH’s timing is unfortunate before the time to be good was 2008/2009 to earn a TV contract now. If UH has a few more good years, ESPN might love UH again…but if they win the Pac-12 contract they won’t really have time slots for UH anymore since BYU is taking up time slots also.
So, I guess we need to cheer for Fox to outbid ESPN for the Pac-12 TV rights and cheer for Comcast (NBC/Universal) to outbid ESPN for the MWC TV rights. Just like the teams in the WAC are only there because no other conference wants them, ESPN is with the WAC because they couldn’t get the Pac-12 and MWC.

Boise State was a powerhouse in the Big Sky before they joined the WAC.
Nevada went undefeated *3* times and went to the national championship game when they were a Big West member before they joined the WAC.
Texas State has a losing record and has already been eliminated from playoff contention. They have a *losing* record at the D-IAA level. Is that the same as going undefeated in the regular season and winning their conference most years?
UT-San Antonio has not played a football game yet. They said that they didn’t want to go to D-IA until 2013 at the earliest because they wouldn’t be competitive. *They* said that if they moved up by 2012 (like the WAC is making them) they will not be competitive…they are telling us they expect to lose and lose badly when they first join the WAC. Never playing a football game is the same as going undefeated in the regular season and winning the conference?

This should be clarified a bit further: Teams and their fans LOVE to come to Hawaii. Athletic Directors, some coaches, and bean counters do not.

May Texas SA, and TSU in fact loose badly. It will allow for the New Mexico States and San Jose states of this world to gain a little bit of swagger. It’s WAC dominance in football or bust for UH when all this rolls around. Just gotta keep winning.

Like every school that has left the WAC, the question remains. How long before those two Texas schools, if and when the achieve success at the DI-A level, decide to defect to a more lucrative conference? Will the WAC ever achieve stability and gain loyalty from its members?
As far as tough OOC games, I am reminded of SJSU’s nonconference schedule and the toll it took on their roster after they played Alabama, Wisonsin and Utah. Looks like their only win this season will be Southern Utah.

Boise State was in same status conference as Montana was, not a power house conference everyone looking for.
Boise was just lucky to have Offensive Coord Peterson to keep them moving up in ranks.
Hawaii would have been the same if we had kept our Offensive Coord who is in Georgia Tech right now.

I think too many people are worried about TV and $$$. We just need to keep Winning!

What we need to do is hire a very good Union negotiator who can bring MWC and WAC together again and make East/West Divison and have a play off just the the SEC power conference is doing and qualify for BCS ranking with still TCU and Boise on board. (If not they will picked off). You need to make both confence unite together… That will surely make ESPN, FOX, TNT and other sports network calling us. If not, other conference will keep picking us off one by one to their build up their TV Markets. But then that’s just wishful thinking…
Teams will always look for green pasture same as the Texas school will after they rule the WAC.
Make them all sign a contract not to leave and try to achieve BCS status no matter how long it takes… It may take act of congress to make it fair for all NCAA team to have equal share… Think about it, in order for Big confence to win they have us Middle class to lose.
BCS wants it that way… they just don’t want us. They will be very happy if Boise State and TCU lose in any giving week.
The thing is…every other time that were defections, there were some decent teams that got left behind along with us. But with each round of defections, the remaining teams have gotten weaker and weaker…to the point where we are now (UH and Idaho will be vying for the WAC championship for the foreseeable future).
I ain’t happy with the remaining teams and assembled newcomers, but if we have no better choice, then so be it. The UH folks who make a lot of money and do this for a living are better off making these decisions.

WAC note: I believe Hawaii should stay with the WAC unless invited to join another conference. I do not believe that Hawaii has the financial power to pull in the necessary $$ to make going independent a viable route. There are also direct flights into Texas and Denver(?) I believe.

Garret is pretty smart for a rocket scientist.
Being independant is like going to war by yourself. No one to cover your back. When Hawaii was independant years and years ago, Paul Durham had a hell of a time to schedule. We ended up scheduling NAIA schools and Div II schools. Being in a weak WAC is better than being by yourself. You gotta bite your tongue and bear it. Some day, a newly formed conference may want us. JD is looking out.

#33 Last Call – Leaving the WAC would make sense if it makes financial sense. Leaving the WAC because of emotions without sound reasoning is an emotional reaction. Right now, Hawaii stands to make money with Boise making it to a BCS bowl, I hazard some where over $500K, probably more if they made it to the National Championship. Which is something I’d like to rant about.
Why is Nevada rated above Hawaii even though we beat them? If Hawaii had been rated in the top 25, Boise would probably be rated #2 a guaranteed a title shot, but they are currently rated 4 because the BCS continues to disrespect Hawaii. We need to stay in the WAC and soundly pound every team they encounter. End Rant

Here is a communication sent out a couple of days ago:
We are all fans of UH football right? or for that fact, football in general right? Quite frankly I welcome the addition of the two Texas schools because if they were not invited, then it’ll be a slow death of our football program.
Regardless if we are the senior member of the WAC, it doesn’t guarantee a victory against any of the schools that are a part of this conference. That’s why they play the game. Yes, the two Texas schools probably won’t be competitive from the start but given time, they will put up a good fight, as well as the remaining conference members.
We were left behind twice now in the conference realignment scheme but so what? We need to look ahead and move forward as a conference and try to rebuild this brand of athletics that the WAC has to offer. My suggestion is to replace Benson with someone from the Big 10 or PAC 10 to run this conference. It’ll be a big shot in the arm (or whole body) to reinvigorate what this conference has to offer. This person though, cannot have any ties to any of the existing teams as it will be a conflict of interest.
One last thought. If my thoughts do come true about replacing our current commish, then the person coming in should “rebrand” this conference.
Good news about Hawaii women’s volleyball recruits. Great job Dave.
I’m going to play devil’s advocate here and say that Nevada has not surged past Hawaii. For that matter neither has Fresno State. Nevada is drawing between 12-15 thousand per football game and if you read their fan post there appears to not be much fan support and as for Fresno State aren’t we selling more tickets than they are? If Nevada or Fresno State were located in the middle of the Pacific who here believes they would have been invited to the MWC or for that matter what chance would Utah State have. And if any of the current Pac-10 schools were located in Hawaii how many of them would be invited to the Pac-10? Certainly not all. Am I satisfied with where we are now? Of course not. Can we improve? A big yes. Are we the crappiest D1A university west of the rockies? No. Are we located in the middle of the Pacific? A big yes.
We going be in the WAC. Just win the WAC. Just go undefeated. Just recruit. If we recruit with the same attitude that Gib Arnold uses then we will be successful at recruiting.

The company I work for donates a ton of money to the UH athletic department. We have signage in the arena, stadium, programs and we do a lot of trade.
It is already an effort to get the fans to buy into these changes. Try convincing the corporate partners who pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into the school.
I know for a fact our contribution and other corporations sponsorship to the UH athletic department will be affected by this new WAC.
UH never really mastered the WAC, so why should it move on? BYU owned UH for years, Boise State owns UH. Why move on to the MWC? Master the WAC, move on.

Focus on developing a tradition of winning programs like womens volleyball and baseball during Les Murakami era. It is something our UH athletic department can control and Hawaii fans demand.
Winning corrects lots of deficiences, including playing in weak conferences. Look at our womens’ volleyball program. It is always ranked in the top ten despite playing against overmatched teams in the WAC. It dominates the WAC. We could do that for football, basketball, baseball and other programs.
Look. The UH athletic department going thrive because of good attendance and television revenue. JD and the rest of his staff going get job security and no need look around for other jobs. Hawaii fans going be happy because we winning.
To me, from my perspective, this is a no brainer. Remain in the WAC and be the big brother to other teams and give the WAC an anchor. It is better to be a big fish in a little pond than a little fish in a big pond.

When there are less butts in the seats, PPV viewers and a reduced ESPN or any national television exposure, why would we want to advertise and contribute as much? We pay good money for our signage to be predominately seen through all avenues.
I already know of two Diamond Sponsors and three Platinum Sponsors whom we work with that are all rethinking their sponsorship and contribution.

Nevada had the good timing to be better than UH in the BCS rankings in both 2008 and 2009. In fact, if you go by the rankings, Nevada was the clear #2 in the WAC behind BSU in this evaluation period. If Nevada beats Fresno, they will beat UH in the rankings in 2010 also.

I don’t shoot down all of your ideas–we agree on a lot of things. I learn a lot on the blog and a lot of good ideas started here. I figure by providing info that we can go in directions that help UH instead of spending our time on things that won’t. There also are a lot of times where people on the blog convince me that I am wrong on issues and I change my stance on those issues. At least 10 things come to mind right away where I had to admit I was wrong and I adopted the side that the other poster had.
If we all agreed then the blog would be boring. I even disagee with ST all the time here…but he’s probably right about the feasibility of UH going inch no matter how much I might prefer otherwise.

I’m willing to bet that UH would have been invited if they had the BCS rankings from 2006/2007. Timing is everything for Nevada over UH.
Garret I have to tell you, the information you provide here has made me a lot smarter. One of the things it has led me to conclude is (while it’s still a long shot) for UH to have a chance of getting a MWC invite we are going to have to get better, a lot better, we are going to have to get so good that the MWC can’t keep us out. That day may come, but it’s not here yet.
Stay in the WAC until they tell us to subsidize travel. Hey, if we don’t have to pay to have people come out here, that’s a bonus. If we go MWC, part of it would be pay subsidies. We don’t, did not, and probably will not have the luxury of having that kind of cash on hand.
I agree with the others, just go out and be that “big Dog”. Let’s face it, string it all together and BSU was the big dog, we may have risen to “medium sized, jr. pit bull” in 2007 but we’ve not as referenced by other bloggers been the BIG DOG. That tag went to BYU and BSU.
If anything, if the BW wanted wahine volleyball, without subsidies, Dave should be allowed to take the team there. he’s been the BIG DOG in that kennel for a long time and deserves to try another arena where competition would be a bit fiercer.
To “Last Call” I also agree with the others. If you read my blogs, I get pummeled more than most and usually it’s Garret leading the way. I for one do it to specifically get a rise out of him. Not to needle (okay, maybe little bit), but to get a contra view. No harm.

There was a thread on the WAC board this morning on which it was suggested that Hawaii move its non-football sports to the Big West and leave football in the WAC. A poster named drt2k3 posted the following response:

I think the only problem with that solution is the WAC needs 8 football schools who also play (virtually) all their sports in the WAC in order to count as an FBS conference…see NCAA Manual Article 20.02.06
“An institution shall be included as one of the 8 full FBS members only if the institution participates in the conference schedule in at least 6 men’s and 8 women’s conference sponsored sports, including men’s basketball and football and three women’s team sports including women’s basketball.”
If Hawaii went football only, the WAC would not have 8 full FBS members, so the WAC really needs both Hawaii and La Tech to stay especially since Montana is out for the forseeable future.

If what drt2k3 says is true, then if UH moves non-football sports to the Big West and leaves football in the WAC, its football team will no longer be in an FBS conference! Instead it will be in a WAC conference that’s Division 1 for non-football sports but (I assume) has eight members who are FBS football independents.
This wouldn’t have been an issue if Montana had joined the WAC, because with 9 football-playing members the WAC would still fulfill the above requirement even if UH withdrew its non-football sports. So the question is… Did Montana’s refusal to join the WAC effectively eliminate UH’s option to put its non-football sports in the Big West??
The over 2500 miles from the mainland to Hawaii is the reality which UH has to deal with and makes it doubtful that an invite will come from the MWC or any other conference. Be happy to be in the WAC with the new Texas schools and other. BYU will be on the warriors’ schedule. That was Hawaii’s almost sole rival in the past as pointed out by ST. Concentrate on trying to emulate Boise’s coaching results.
As S. Tsai and a few others say, focus on being at the top of the WAC next year and after. We have had a difficult time in doing that in all sports except women’s volleyball, softball and … ?
I’m surprised that one radio commentator keeps saying that independence is a viable option because the remaining WAC teams are uninteresting. What teams can you play when you go independent in October and November ?

There is about zero chance Southwest will have direct flights to Hawaii from San Antonio — that is 3700 miles! That is well out of the range of any of the 737s that SWA flies or would fly. Even on the longest range 737 SWA would have to reduce the number of seats (since they fly one class) so much that it would not make sense. Remember, the printed range is best case scenario — usually while flying over land where there are available diversion airports. I think the longest schedule 737 route in the US is Seattle to Miami, which Alaska does. That is 1,000 miles less than San Antonio to HNL.
And, no, SWA will not be buying bigger planes any time soon.

We have to remind ourselves not to get a big head about conference stuff. When we go out and dominate the conference competition year in and year out like Boise State has in football then maybe we can talk smack about our conference not being “good enough.”
No question Wahine VB is too good for the WAC. We have know that for years and there really hasn’t been any conference challenge since BYU left. In football we have been in the conference for 40 years and have only have one outright conference title and two shared titles, right? The only conference opponent we have not lost to in the past three years is NMSU.
Basketball isn’t really any different. Football is the big driver though.
Nevada and Fresno State were not invited to the MWC conference because the MWC desperately wanted their programs. That might be true for Boise, but if Boise balances out losing Utah certainly Nevada and Fresno do not come close to making up for losing BYU. The MWC is not some sort of paradise destination. Their top teams have had one foot out the door.
For football there are only three choices — WAC, Indy, or somehow begging the MWC to let us in. The WAC is stuck with us for now. The MWC has already indicated they are not interested for the moment, and if one of the reasons for Nevada, Boise State and Fresno to move on was to not have to play here every other year then you would have to guess there are three no votes right there. I know that it was primarily the non-rev sports — but as I pointed out yesterday none of those teams recruit in Hawaii for FB. Going indy could present many many challenges — including potentially no bowl games.
Boise has had perfect regular seasons more often than I care to remember. BUT each time, they have been criticized for their “soft” schedule. In the end, they still had the record and they still have the ranking and their recruiting has gotten better.
I say, let’s do it.. stay with the WAC, build the program by being the top dog in the WAC.. keep winning and let that winning record be one of our recruiting tools. No better tool in recruiting than a winning record. Raise the recruitment funding even more. Make sure we have the players we need to win and win constantly with double digit winning seasons year after year. Within a handful of years, Hawaii will be the darling of the non-AQ teams. ESPN won’t be able to get enough of us.

None. They will want travel subsidy plus if you still want them for schedule you might as well stay in WAC without travel subsidy.
IF you’re going INDY you will need to upgrade schedule and that will take some doing during the month of October and November.
And you will need some kind of Independent TV contract like BYU and Texas got.

Especially if the two new Texas additions start to reflect that strong Texan football tradition. Utah State and Idaho seem to be coming around. Montana is in a sit and wait mode, but may still change their minds in a year or two.. and then there’s the economy… Vegas reports two consecutive months of profit gain.. ?!?!… more disposable income = an economy on the rebound. When the economy is in full swing, more schools will consider moving to the FBS.

I think there’s a real opportunity, for whatever direction UH takes, to become dominant in football. But it has to be a well-thought-out schedule. If it stays in a watered-down WAC, it needs to have a strong non-conference sked. No Division I-AA teams. If it goes independent, it needs at least four home games between late September and late November. That should make for at least six home games during the season. Sorry, but as an independent, UH will probably will have to go on the road more often. And as I’ve said before, women’s volleyball should go independent.
Even with USC to open, our average after 5 games is only 1600 heads better per game. The economy is really taking a chunk out of ticket sales. And to think PPV is down 12%, too.
I wonder how the commercial PPV establishments did this year? Especially on games nights?
Oh wait.. we don’t have game “nights” anymore.. it’s early evening.. morning, or mid-day.
Warrior football for Commercial PPV now caters to Happy Hour and Dinner crowds…. dunno if the typical bar that hosts UH PPV likes the earlier hours.

I think I’ve been the most negative person on this whole subject.
I think it’s because the school leaders just aren’t honest. They shouldn’t need contracts and pre-nups. And they shouldn’t need members huddling in secret. The WAC is a non-profit corporation, and each president/chancellor is considered to be a board member. In the real world, if you think it’s in the best interest to move on, then you tell the others. You recuse yourself from debates. If Stan Sheriff were still in charge, none of this nonsense happens. If people want to leave, they can leave. But they do it openly and with honor. When there were problems with the media and UH, Sheriff used to call us all in, and hammer it out. Everybody shakes hands. When we used to doubt the power of pink-painted walls, he called us in, told us to stare at a piece of pink paper for 10 seconds, then fake-punched us. We agreed he was right. And we shook hands.
How would recruiting (so called “lifeblood” of the program…especially for one working towards “dominant” status) be affected by staying in the WAC vs. going independent? That’d have to play a part in the decision making processs…no??

maidenhawaii; I thought we had close to the players we need to win and so did others. But after Boise, it became we don’t have enough talent ? Coach Mac said he doesn’t think its the x’s and o’s but not making the plays, etc. I think it is the coaching, not so much the talent. Coaching is good vs. the rest of the WAC, but not against the high level teams.
S Tsai, I haven’t heard Dave Shoji complaining too much about being on top of the WAC all these years ? Would independence in Volleyball bring much in added benefits vs. costs ?

ST – There are many direct flights from Phoenix, AZ to Hawaii now. US Air, even Hawaiian Air and Korean Air fly there. Since S West has lots of flights out of Phoenix hope eventually they will have a market to come Hawaii direct too.
There are many flights out of Phoenix direct to San Antonio, TX.
May be if Hawaii people start traveling to Texas a lot, American or even Hawaiian will make a direct to other Metro besides Houston and Dallas.
I will surely go visit San Antonio, San Marco or Denver before I revisit Fresno or Boise.

#135 – I just think about all the diehard football fans in Texas and the possibilities of good things to come.
My attention span depends on the speaker.
If I ask someone the same question twice that means I didn’t listen the first time.
If someone tells me the same thing twice then they talk too much.

Speaking of direct flights, too bad Hawn Air is buying Air Bus planes. They don’t have a good track record. Some rolls royce engines have been blowing up.
Money, money, money! This is what I hear in this blog.
If UH Athletic Department is looking for more money, it should go and get it from Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA). It would be another new source of funds to support and supplement the UH athletic program.
Why should UH go to HTA to receive financial support? HTA is getting a free ride on UH sports. UH sports help HTA promote and sell Hawaii as a travel destination. By playing home and home series over time and traveling to the different cities, sports fans who otherwise would not think of traveling to Hawaii will become aware of the islands and come to the islands to see their teams play. Likewise, Hawaii fans who are not aware of the mainland cities would travel to those cities to see UH play. Until now, who would have thought of traveling to San Antonio, Texas? San Antonio fans would think the same way.
UH sports attracted additional tourists from Boise, Reno and Fresno. Now the three programs are leaving the WAC, but there is a residual effect on tourism because there was a sports connection and a strong awareness of Hawaii that are going last long after the teams are gone. Marketing people call it captive customers. Once you get them, you get them for a lifetime.
A fluid WAC, where teams are lost and new teams are added, in the long run helps to promote and sell Hawaii tourism. This is another solid reason to remain in the WAC. It is a tourism tool.
And all UH sports need to do is keep winning!
The problem with PPV is it took away the fans who use to go to the game.
Not the fans who use to watch it free on KFVE or ESPN. 90% of those (fan?) never went to Live Aloha Stadium games… I Bet.
But the way the PPV cost keep going up on it will have a deminish return like this year and it will surely affect next year PPV renewal.
It is way cheaper to watch 40 NBA games to every NFL games Live each week than watching Warriors PPV once a week.
I’d keep an eye on BYU’s independent quest. Who knows? Maybe they’ll need a conference to fall back on in a year or two? … What irony if BYU came back to the WAC after a year– as a founding father and a savior to a floundering conference? It would be a full-circle for them. BYU would make up for Boise… The two Texas teams will hopefully be a more than fair exchange for Nevada and Fresno.
Still don’t like the idea of any UH team going independent. The biggest reason – scheduling during the conference seasons, plus another reason for the NCAA to screw UH in the tournament. At least with an automatic bid, you know they’ll be in the tournament.

PPV initial impact may have been such, but I think as prices continue to spiral upward for PPV and we don’t see an increase in ticket sales at the gates, that argument holds less and less water.

HTA could sponsor a Hawaiian Halau for each UH Game (both home and away) and have them perform at Half-time and replace Vili as the mascot in helping pump up the crowd during the games. Don’t worry! Be Happy! Hawaii will be in a better place and things will work out for the best, whatever it is. The positive signs are here:
1) Our football team is on the rise, we beat Fresno St. and Nevada, two of the renegades.
Next year, we will beat Fresno and Nevada again proving that we are a better program. Nevada will go down, losing Kaepernick. Fresno will be worse next year.
2) I believe our basketball program will be on the rise also. The signs are there and Arnold has been doing a great job of recruiting. Look for Hawaii to beat Fresno and Nevada this year in basketball again proving that we will be a better program than these renegades.
3) Boise St. – they have a great football program. Other than that, nothing! There is more to do it than the overall success of an athletic program.
4) Hawaii has nationally ranked or conference champion programs in baseball, women’s volleyball, softball, men’s volleyball, and after the bowl game I really believe we will be in the top 25 in football.
5) Donovan will find a good women’s soccer coach. In Hawaii, soccer is pretty big and we should be a leader in that area. There is no reason why women’s soccer can’t be at least conference champons and go to an NCAA tournament in soccer.
Like Donovan said, we will weigh all of our options. In the end, Hawaii will be very happy.
Things will continue to shake out. I look for TCU to be invited to the Big 12 and maybe even Boise St. to replace Colorado and Nebraska. I envision La Tech going to conference USA and Central Florida going to the Big East along with East Carolina. The Mountain West will be for all intents and purposes a former Western Athletic Conference. I don’t see Hawaii staying in the WAC. Geographically, it don’t make sense. We can do better and I’m confident that Donovan will make the right decisions. We have a better athletic program across the board than any other WAC team, including Boise, Nevada, and Fresno. Look for men’s baskeball to make a big impression by the end of the year. By being picked last in the conference, “Arnie’s Army” will have a chip on their shoulders and have all the motivation to prove people wrong.

It would make sense to me to (even starting small) have every Hawaii/Texas Game become a big social event to encourage sports-tourism both ways. We have a lot in common with Texas when it comes to loving local traditions and sharing food- especially the BBQ/Pulehu kind.
I would LOVE to be able to experience some Texas hospitality and good food and reciprocate with a Tsai-ko -style event with music and dancers and kanikapila atmosphere.
We just need to encourage some Texas lurkers to come out of the woodwork. Come out, come out! 😆 Welcome to the WAC! 😎

In my opinion, if the Warriors are going to reign in the new WAC, they are going to have to balance their nonconference schedule with ranked, or at least poll worthy teams, and unranked teams to be eligible for a BCS bowl, which includes FCS teams. When the Warriors went to the Sugar Bowl, they had two non-FBS teams like Northern Colorado and Charleston Southern on their schedule, and the only ranked team they played was BSU. So, its not about playing the toughest schedule to be BCS worthy. It has to be the Ying-Yang philosophy. Balance like Boise State has learned.
jojo – Awwwww, well at least it’s better than nothing. Not that we have nothing…I should have wrote better than something.

I would like to see UH stay in the WAC for another 3 – 5 years and build up a continuous football record, minimum, of 10 wins for the regular season and wining bowl games.
I believe that Coach Mack has in place the necessary coaching staff and players, current and incoming, to repeatedly reach the 10 wins minimum and winning bowl games. The latter may be tough, but that’s what it will take before any serious consideration to indy status or moving to another conference.
History has shown that when UH has a winning record and breaking the top 25, the subsequent years have been dismall. No continuity like other schools that create a winning tradition and keep it going after the “big” year. Look at the 1992 team, the year after NCAA historical turn around, the and 2007 team.

2006 was 11 wins… 2007 was 12… two consecutive years!! Whoo hoo… then poof!
But I give Mack credit for keeping us above the 5 win mark the two years that followed and getting us to a bowl game that first year. Got to reach at least 10 this season.. 11, even better. Regarding women’s soccer, it is mistake to believe that we can be a winner with just the talent we have in Hawaii. I have played soccer all my life, and coached at the top club levels and high school, both men and women.
Our big weakness is not having big, fast, athletic defenders that can stop the best strikers and midfielders. This is the key to winning at the D1 level where top strikers are skilled enough to beat average defenders, especially when they are not physically up to the task. Add a top goalie as another player we need to recruit nationally.
We score 2 and even 3 points and still lose because we give up too many easy chances. We have small midfielders and strikers with skill– even here, we need one big striker and wings with speed.
OM – #163 – the seasons overlap, so I don’t think that’s feasible. Basketball – Nov-Mar/Apr, volleyball – Jan-May
The only bad thing is Damien Cain cancelled his trip to Hawaii.

On the plus side his best friend Ronnie Stevens committed to Hawaii.

Latching on to what expat mentioned in his post #106 about Southwest Airlines and possibly flying to HNL, the same points he made about the practical range of their 737s also comes into play if they’re even thinking of flying between Phoenix and HNL.
Back when Aloha Airlines (RIP) was flying to/from the mainland with the exact same type of 737s that Southwest has, their planes could barely make it to Vegas on a good day, and Aloha’s 737s had ~20 less seats than Southwest’s 737s. Going to Phoenix means adding an additional 250 miles, and I don’t think an airline with as good a track record as Southwest would be willing to fly nonstop from Phoenix to HNL with over 40 seats blocked out. It wouldn’t be worth it economically for them.

Southwest can always buy a new plane with more range if they want to upgrade.
We all need to keep upgrading and improving our position or we all fall back.
Look at Hawaiian Air they just bought a bunch of new plane taking them to Japan, maybe on to Korean maybe even Beijin, China.
We all need to continue upgrading… Can’t stay the same or you’re left behine.
If the University of Hawaii has no plans and goals to upgrade their football program to become a top 20 team year in and year out, then they should remain in the WAC.
If they do have plans to become a top 20 team year in and year out put the medal to the pedal and do everything to have that goal accomplished. Stay in the WAC until the product is salable to the networks and other conferences.
If it makes financial sense to move the other sports to the Big West do it. Suggest playing each school every other year in Hawaii. Play the annual series at one school in sports that have home and away games each year. Being in the Big West and saving money in these so called non revenue sports can give the football program more money to use. Spend the money where the most money can be made.
If the WAC stays at 8 football teams that give UH 6 non conference games that they could schedule. UH can play for a title and upgrade their strength of schedule with the non conference games and most likely make more money.
However any direction that UH takes will be senseless if becoming a top 20 team year in and year out is not the goal they aspire to.
If I’m not mistaken, and believe me that I have been mistaken a lot, Southwest statement about flying to Hawaii included the commitment to purchase “larger” aircraft for the distance between the West Coast and Hawaii.
Did they also mention direct flights from Texas to Hawaii?
Wyoming and Colorado would be easy to tattoo.

Two phrases have been tossed around a lot in regards to which direction UH athletic should take – “be proactive” and “think outside the box”. The two most popular scenarios are, stay in the WAC and see how things shake out and go indy in FB with the Big West for other sports.
To be proactive and think outside the box UH should come up with another scenario. Jimmy D should contact Garrett. Ask him to crunch numbers, fanancial and otherwise, and come up with a plan he could pitch to the MWC.
A plan for a twelve team, two division MWC. With UH as a football member only. Play teams in your division and three from the other on a rotating basis. UH could bring travel subsidies, 13th game and last TV game of he day to the table.
Garrett, this may be so outside the box it borders on the absurd. Besides UH, what two teams could the MWC realistically invite to improve their $$$ situation and their AQ situation.
ST: what you said in the preface is on point
I believe, if TCU leaves the MWC, the MWC’s dream of becoming AQ will be dashed for many more years to come. The MWC then becomes no more than what the WAC currently is. UNLV and Nevada, Reno get to have their in-Conference Rivalry. Besides that, their TV market shrinks considerably with the exodus of Utah, BYU, and Colorado. Their next TV contract might be smaller than expected.
HawaiianTime — thanks for the city info. Note you are in the same city as long-time blogger AZWARRIORS22, who has posted infrequently this season, but I do recall seeing him post. The other person in Phoenix posted for a fews weeks, then disappeared (unless he changed blog name).
Hey SteveM, did you ever get your prescription eyewear for ocean sports yet?
Southwest will continue flying a 737 fleet. True, they have swallowed some companies lately with other airframes, but they bought them for the routes, not the planes. Southwest said that they were looking at getting some longer range 737s in order to fly to Hawaii — not a bigger kind of plane. By the way, the longest range 737 is also the smallest of the “next generation” planes I believe, the 737-700ER.
Southwest has been very successful flying a single airframe. Alaska has emulated them in that regard. By only flying 737s it eases their scheduling and improves their turnaround time, which is the #1 concern for SWA. That alone is one of the reasons that SWA may stay out of the Hawaii market. They typically get great utilization rates on their aircraft — the amount of time that they are in the air versus sitting around. Hawaiian gets terrible rates on their 767s.
When you get a new aircraft type you have to retrain the flight crews you want to have fly that plane. A 767 or A330 pilot for Hawaiian cannot just decide one day that they will fly the 717 over to Hilo. For each aircraft type (757s and 767s are considered the same by the way) you need to have trained crew including backup people in place. It is much easier if all your pilots fly the same bird. Southwest usually requires pilots to bring their own type rating with them. Imagine what kind of chaos there would be if they bought a few 757s. The 737 is by far the best selling commercial airline of all time.

There are *no* WAC schools that the MWC could add in addition to UH to get to 12 that would help their AQ chances. The only C-USA school that might help is Houston (they actually have more BCS points than UH), but I can’t see a 12th team. SMU could be that team if they have a few decent years, but the horrible years they had in the recent past are an anchor on their BCS points right now.
SMU does have a highly rated recruiting class and they had success last year and may end up in a bowl this year. None of the other C-USA schools has a chance to join with Houston to get AQ points…since I think you have to exclude C-USA East schools like East Carolina.
By the way, I’ll post another long idea on Monday–kind of like what I did this Monday with an out-of-the-box idea (neutral site games). I’d like your and everybody else’s feedback on it…the idea might be crazy and I don’t mind people criticizing it. It is *really* different, but I think I can defend the idea and show how UH would benefit significantly from it.
I have probably 4 long, different ideas like that neutral site thing that I have been crunching the numbers for. However, the one I’ll post on Monday is the most out-of-the-box of them.

I agree 100% with Stephen Tsai’s analysis of UH’s interests in conference affiliation (minus 3.07% for his uhmmm misguided acceptance of split memberships in the WAC and BWC).
To be independent ordinarily requires rugged individualism. UH does not have that; see for example the follow-the-herd, politically correct, anti moke idiocy of its non-qualifier policy.
Moreover, these are not ordinary times, and the rugged individual knows it would be idiotic to make big body and go independent now, given the economy and the political climate.
-On the money side, we’ve already seen a WAC team that had to come here per the WAC schedule request
an earlier game starting time just so they could jet out the same night.
Who’s going to jet in if they don’t have to even at season’s end?
-The names you could ordinarily rattle off as late season visiting opponents, you should scratch off given the
coming economy our always politicing politicians are giving us.
Travel costs are going to go through the ceiling after 2012, for example, when the EPA issues its cap-
and-trade regulations to reduce carbon emissions in order to save us from global warming, never ming
that global warming is a hoax.
So, let’s stay all the way in the WAC.
The WAC was the dream of Governor Burns, while running away was the vision of lesser lights like President Mortimer.
There was a reason Governor Burns worked hard to get UH into the WAC; the reason is seen, e.g., in the national baseball championships of Rice and Fresno State.
The Texas-San Antone-type schools we scoff at today will be the Boise States of tomorrow; consider how we scoffed at UC-Davis, the school that gave the BCS its biggest nemesis, Coach Chris Peterson.
To those who think they can construct a powerful football schedule as an independent, apply your creative thoughts instead to building up the WAC.
For example, silly me thinks we should stop complaining about the trips to Rushton and embrace them.
Fly into San Antonio, then have Karl Malone’s company bus the team to Rushton, where UH school of tourism would fete the family of that former Wahine volleyballer and French Quarter friends from the Sugar Bowl, and upon the team’s return, the UH school of tourism would hold a fund raiser Night in New Orleans at Hemenway with recipes and food ingredients picked up on the trip.
So, yes, the WAC is not made up of tourist destination spots, but each town has lots to offer that would enrich the lives and learning of UH students.
Here’s to staying in the WAC and making the membership work.

The 777 has crazy range, as does the A-380 and A-340. The 777-200LR has the longest range of any commercial passenger aircraft — well over 9,000 na miles. Seattle to Malaysia is well within its range. The longest commercial route I believe is Singapore to Newark – about 8200 na miles (although that is flown by an A340, not the triple 7)
Southwest Airlines has shown that they can and will think outside the box so who knows what they are going to do. It is reasonable to surmise though that they will strive to stay with the business model that has brought them success.

All I can say is “GOOD LUCK” to you with the additions of Denver, Texas State and UT San Antonio as any form of national recognition will be difficult to obtain from already the minds of power who look at Hawaii with NO respect to the conference and teams that play in it.
I can understand and relate with last call as how can a GOOD athletic progam like Hawaii get so much DISRESPECT and teams as Nevada, Fresno State and Boise State get all the accolades and allowances to move their athletic program to the MWC and the door remains shut for no where Hawaii to go as “ruling the wac” with all those lesser teams will only leave you the Hawaii Bowl as NO AP, Coaches Poll or BCS will be dialing 808 for any consideration.
WOW is really all I can say as Denver University is a hockey school and have NO football so how do they help you with their addition to the WAC as Montana State is not coming and Texas State and UT San Antonio has a better tradition in basketball then football. Going Independent is out of the question and how can you go into a home of a future recruit who is also being recruited by the MWC and Pac 10 ?
I understand regardless to support your team but will ALL Hawaiian fans show up to fill Aloha Stadium as hopefully the non conference schedule has some BIG football name schools to get excited about as what you got coming in to join the “weak wac” is not going to get you any form of national recognition regardless if you win it’s conference championship.
Any way it goes will be there for support as being a former bow in that GREAT golden era where we played the BEST is a tough pill to swallow on who Hawaii plays now as TIME has changed and “playing in paradise” is no longer a selling point to the competition.

Southwest had a code share agreement with ATA…then ATA went bankrupt around the same time as Aloha Airlines. It was a little odd seeing HNL as an option when booking a SWA flight during that time period.

BTW, if you have not heard yet, large Polynesian with shaved sides and blond mohawk driving a gold colored SUV burglarized our neighbor across the street.
I believe it’s the same “gang” that was “working” Mililani Mauka about 6-9 months ago. Co-worker described the same person and car. They drive around a selected neighborhood casing houses. Next step is to stop and ring doorbell to determine if anyone home at that time of day. They also use different people, including women, to reduce suspicion. If some one opens the door, they fake like they represent contractors and ask if owner wants to build a wall, etc.
Once they determine no one home during the day, they “hit” that house. SUV is parked facing for easy get away with the tailgate up so no one can take a license plate #. Luckily for our neighbor, their yardman appeared, saw the guy exiting the house from the sliding glass door with a bag and asked him what he was doing. Poly guy’s response was I live 2 houses over. Then, he took off running, dumped the bag into the back of his SUV and took off with the SUV’s back door still in the up position.
