Getaway day

The Warriors endured a rainy workout in their final Manoa practice before Saturday’s road game against second-ranked Boise State. The Warriors departed the islands this afternoon.

The Warriors did not mind the wet conditions. Chilly rain is expected Saturday in Boise.

Right slotback Kealoha Pilares did not practice today, but will make the trip and is expected to start.

Spencer Smith, who recently was cleared. also practiced extensively, and will be used in some of the Warriors’ new defensive schemes.

Middle linebacker George Daily-Lyles also will make the trip.

Right tackle Laupepa Letuli said he is fine, and expects to play against the Broncos.

* * * * *

Whoops. Smith was hurt against Army. One of the coaches said “opener” a few weeks ago, and being that I’m old,  it stuck in my head ,and I had forgotten which game he was injured. Thanks for pointing out the mistake.

With Smith’s activation, David Graves will wear No. 12 the rest of the season. Smith, who wears No. 9, and Graves will be on special teams together.

    Uno?

I could have sworn that Spencer Smith broke his arm on the road against Army.

And is Brent Rausch injured? He did not play against Idaho.

That is right. I’m not sure why our blog host keeps putting out that it was the opener. It happened late it the Army game.

    Yes, I screwed up.

    This season is too long.

Smith was hurt in the Army game.

    Thanks all.

  12. Jun Tao November 3, 2010 7:40 am

a good talking point is when injuries occur, it gives an opportunity to develop the depth of the roster. Two players who I think are making the most of the opportunity are John Hardy-Tuliau and Kainoa LaCount. Hardy-Tuliau has been playing lights out while LaCount almost makes you forget that he was a backup.

On another note, so why wasn’t that Idaho defensive lineman ejected from the game after the second personal foul? Then he got a third one. Talk about player safety.

Every field that we step onto is our field. Everything between the lines is ours. We will own the line of scrimmage, we will own the field. No matter what city we go to, we will own the field. That is our posture. That is the culture that we are building as Warriors.

When Kamehameha I stepped onto the other islands, he fought and made it his own. Our Warriors need to do the same. It’s just a blue field…blue, green, no matter…the game we are playing is the same. We have a better passing game than Boise. Our defense & o-line are doing so much better than last year. Special teams is getting better with some outstanding work by the players. We can beat Boise.

  36. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 3, 2010 8:59 am

Stephen Tsai is the Leader of the Tsai-kos. Play on the word psycho. Nutburgers about sports.

The reason there is no motel anywhere the University area is that motels are not allowed on O`ahu – or for that matter, anywhere in Hawai`i. Second, Waikiki is a five-minute drive away. Third, NIMBYs in every community across the state have dominated county decision-making about small-footprint regional inns anywhere. Facilities housing temporary guests can only be built in resort areas and at the airport.

And, of course, the last time a new bed & breakfast license was issued was December 28, 1988. Soon the remaining 57 licensed facilities will be closed once the ageing owners die off.

Keep the tourists in Waikiki – or better yet, urge them to stay home and just send their money here instead.

  37. gigi-hawaii November 3, 2010 9:01 am

Looking forward to 2011 when Loefler(sp) and Shigematsu will be ready to strut their stuff with the Oline – 6’5” – 6’6” and 295 to 300#s.

what makes 2010 so intriguing, recruiting wise, for 2012 and 2013 is who will be the recruits that will dominate the O and Dlines.

UH has about 6 or 7 “grey shirts” for 2011, is this correct ST?, that leaves only 18 or 19 scholarships will be available – coaches must use them judiciously – stressful job as so many excellent players.

Gigi: Anyone can visit O’ahu as long as they stay in Waikiki or around the airport, Ko Olina, or Turtle Bay – or they can stay in a b&b or vacational rental outside these areas. However, the “B&B Police” can, do & will report any unlicensed violators since they are able to identify rental cars. I run two no-charge small visitor industry services – and have since 1997 – so these are issues I know quite well.

chauncy winchester-makainai @6’4″/300+ lbs may be the best of the lot. that’s the word coming out of the quarry.

looking at the oline candidates of the future…we seem to have reloaded with a lot of talented young men. it is especially good to redshirt olinemen early so that they can develop physically. probably the hardest “skill” position is learning the craft of a d-1a college football olineman.

the fundamentals and the rudiments necessary to become a good olineman is not learned overnight either.

Technically, yes, he does break the vacation rental ordinance, but the “crime” is actually committed by the property owner and the rental management company, not the tenant who rents the property and stays on the premises for a minimum of 30 days.

This is probably the key issue other than money as to why Richard Turbin lost the City Council District IV race.

  64. madeinhawaii November 3, 2010 10:21 am

Interesting… the Humanitarian Bowl has WAC and MAC tie ins for the next 4 years

uDrove’s sponsorship starts with the Dec.18th 2010 uDrove® Humanitarian Bowl and extends through the 2013 season. This agreement was struck following the Humanitarian Bowl’s completion of a new four-year contract with the Mid-American Conference and Western Athletic Conference.

    http://www.humanitarianbowl.org/

I guess that means the WAC keeps the humanitarian bowl.. but does it have to be in Boise?

  65. madeinhawaii November 3, 2010 10:23 am

I suppose it stays in Idaho as the key sponsor, uDrove, is an Idaho based sponsor… and I suppose the Kibbie Dome won’t do as well?

    NCAA:

Is Makainai a year older than Jordan and Shawn?

The later are using their “red shirt” this year and will be considered “red shirt frosh” for 2011.

I thought they were all the same grad class.

  85. al November 3, 2010 11:19 am

chauncy w-m is a redshirted freshman

j loeffler i believe he grayshirted first and is a true freshman by this route

shigematsu is a true freshman, who i think takes this season as a redshirt.

  86. A-House November 3, 2010 11:20 am

The Hawaii Sports blog has a list of recruits UH is looking at and several have been offered scholarship, but no commitments expect Muir who should be a “red shirt” frosh in 2011 – same class as Jordan and Shawn.

  87. NCAA November 3, 2010 11:20 am

    Mr. A-House,

If I recall, Makainai red-shirted last season.

  88. A-House November 3, 2010 11:21 am

so, al: Jordan will be a 2nd year true freshman because of the grey shirt?

  89. A-House November 3, 2010 11:23 am

I like the Waianae DT – #91 -big strong kid – got grades and wants to be a Warrior?

  90. al November 3, 2010 11:23 am

ahouse…and don’t forget that the “next aussie” arrives in january on his own, similar to billy ray and then goes on scholie during the summer of 2011.

he’s already 6′ 5 3/8″ and 284 lbs and is a workout freak. he’ll probably redshirt to learn the nuiances of american football. his potential is immense, nfl immense.

  91. al November 3, 2010 11:28 am

ahouse…technically speaking he greyshirts out of high school, then redshirts his first eligible year and returns the third season as a freshman.

    grad hs in ’09

attends uh part time in fall ’09

enrolls full time in january ’10

    redshirts fall ’10

fall ’11 is a redshirt(ed) freshman with 4 yrs eligibility.

  92. Pomai November 3, 2010 11:29 am

Focus on the now, nothing in the future.

    If I may repeat:

We are Hawaii. We are the Warriors. We have presence. We have confidence. We posture ourselves properly. When we walk into a room, we have a walk with a commanding presence. Boise state has to beat us. They have to play their best game to beat us. We are the leaders in the WAC for the year 2010. We are in the lead in the conference. We are at the top of the conference standings. Boise State has to beat us. They will need all of the help that they can get. They will need hometown advantage, they will need to paint their field blue. They are coming onto our field to try to beat us. Yes, our field. Every field that we step onto is our field. Everything between the lines is ours. We will own the line of scrimmage, we will own the field. No matter what city we go to, we will own the field. That is our posture. That is the culture that we are building as Warriors. Teams have to play up to us. Nuff said.

  93. al November 3, 2010 11:30 am

no such terminology as 2nd year true freshman.

say greyshirted and then redshirted freshmen that encompasses a two year period.

  95. NCAA November 3, 2010 11:35 am

    Mr. A-House,

Isn’t that Waianae DT only a sophomore? Lots of potential in that big guy! I watched the recent Mililani/Waianae game and noticed Mililani’s center did a good job. If he was taller he would have a lot of scholarship offers.

  96. A-House November 3, 2010 11:36 am

    al:

how can forget the next “aussie” (Miur or Muir) who first selected UH, then visited/committed to SMU, and reconsidered and now will “walk-on” to UH, Spring 2011.

I am so happy for he and us; especially us cause he will make a huge impact on the O-line!!

can see it now: Loeffler, Makainai, Muir, and Shigematsu. and, cannot forget Afusia.

ok, now who will be at Center?

  97. al November 3, 2010 11:36 am

we have to go up to boise believing that we are better and we will beat them.

we have to go up to boise exuding confidence in our talent and preparedness.

we have to go up to boise believing that we will play with more discipline than them.

we have to go up to boise knowing that we are physically superior.

we have to go up to boise believing that we are defending our brotherhood of warriors and will battle to the end.

I thought he was a Junior or Senior. That’s ok, class of 2013 with the big kid from Kaneohe – dang, forgot his name, but Coach Mack already offered a scholarship.

Listening to the broadcasters, he sounded like a player of character and a good fit for UH.

    Isn’t he enrolled?

If you’re speaking of Almeida, he is on the Nebraska roster and makes his debut tonight. Too bad. Unless there’s another 6-11 Brazilian out there. Anyway, this is from the team website:

Wednesday’s opener will also mark the Husker debut for four players, including junior college transfers Andre Almeida and Caleb Walker. Almeida and Walker were both junior college All-Americans…

  103. al November 3, 2010 11:44 am

    GO WARRIORS ! ! !

  114. al November 3, 2010 12:08 pm

the chester su’a led kaimuki bulldogs in an epic battle down to the wire with su’a making a play to save the victory for kaimuki. and i wish he would reconsider his wazzu st verbal for the home team. i don’t think there has been a single most dominant player as he than when mosi tatupu or john coen played in the old ilh.

kahuku…how can you buck kahuku. not only are they as big and as fast as they have ever been but they pass the ball effectively when you are not watching. the soph running back wily is as good as they have come from the north shore. miliani’s got that qb and his twin towers, but, i think the kahuku defense will neutralize them with their smash mouth style.

  119. Derek November 3, 2010 12:10 pm

Very interesting interview w/ Chris Peterson. I noticed he has concerns about his team and about Hawaii. He is worried about his team’s injury problems. The Broncos are banged up in the secondary which is not good in stopping Hawaii. He feels it will be a hard football game and I got the sense that he feels it will be close. Peterson is impressed with the Hawaii defense and Hawaii’s turnover ratio. Boise St. offensively and defensively are both excellent. The offense is very balanced. The Bronco rushing defense is one of the best. But their pass defense can be had. Hawaii has a chance, IF.

Hawaii takes care of the ball.

Makes big plays from outside the red zone

Play just solid defense and let Boise St. work for their yards and their scores.

    Get some turnovers.

Hawaii can do all of these things. Will they do it? I don’t know, but I have a feeling that it will come down to a very close game, likely decided on the last play of the game. Here’s my crystal ball prediction, Pomai!

    Hawaii – 33 Boise St. 30.

Stay humble and don’t commit stupid penalties.

Star Advertiser got a bunch of insensitive idiots running the show.

As someone previous mentioned headlines, this very paper also speculated that Methadone contributed to Andy Iron’s death. The headline, even the word “overdose” just opened up negative speculation, stereotypes and conclusions–even before any official investigation was completed.

The police report which has been released unequivocally shows that there was no methadone in the room.

I only post this here because many people read and hopefully one of the clowns that run the SA get the word…

  123. wade November 3, 2010 12:35 pm

it appears that brent rausch (after 3 years in hawaii, he’ll leave just the same as he arrived) used the colt brennan off season strength and conditioning program (which is absolutely nothing) but unfortunately he is nowhere near the throwing ability of colt. so as it may, he probably should be bypassed on the depth chart by the freshmen and shane austin. austin is a gamer with 1 big downside: he has laser lock vision. once he focuses on a receiver he “locks” on to that target and fires away. but defenders will quickly figure it out and pick him off with ease. graves is also a gamer and will take off and run it hard. similar to john hao. not afraid of contact.

  124. OrtKapolei November 3, 2010 12:35 pm

Boise St. is going to have a blue out against UH. It may be hard for UH to see the defense rushing.

#37 WassupDoc – wouldn’t this be the same as asking all season ticket holders to just buy the tickets but don’t go to the games???

The NIMBYs who feel that tourists degrade Hawai`i’s environment do acknowledge that the money they spend here and the taxes they generate (TAT and GET) directly plus the income taxes & the property taxes paid by the businesses do pay for the services the residents need; however, there is very real hostility generated toqards tourists by certain people in many communities all across the state.

Since the end of September, I’ve attended four different community meetings all across O`ahu in which these very arguments were made – and not just in a joking manner.

Many residents feel that visitors ruin rural and suburban communities and that the only way to confine them to Waikiki and other resort areas is to ban/bar any business from opening up & catering primarily to visitors.

Hey – I’m just reporting here, not advocating that viewpoint.

  134. madeinhawaii November 3, 2010 1:24 pm

    Let me rephrase that..

Boise can have their Blue Out

and our Warriors can have their Break Out game on the Blue Turf.

  135. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 3, 2010 1:28 pm

Another quick reminder: If you would like to join us this Saturday and spend an hour or so talking story, playing with the kids who are part of the Family Promise program & eating dinner before heading on up to The Stan to watch the launch of the 2010-11 men’s basketball season at 7 pm, please send me an e-mail to s wood at hoku dot com and I’ll let you know when and where. The location is about ten minutes away from the University by car plus plan on another five minutes or so to park & walk into The Stan. We’ll be slightly late – probably will arrive around 7:30 or so, but we have to help with the cleanup. Our guests eat fo’free – including you – and don’t have to do anything except have fun.

Menu: Roast turkey, sweet potatoes, fruit salad, cornbread, rice & dessert.

  136. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 3, 2010 1:33 pm

A football-related matter: I checked with Ruby Tuesday’s in the Windward Mall and they do carry ESPNU and will be showing the game on Saturday. We’ll be there shortly early to secure good seats. They’ll be serving breakfast until 11 am. After that is lunch so you can choose one or the other – or both if you’ve got a manly man’s appetite.

If you haven’t been there before, it’s at the Sears end of the Mall with plenty of free parking.

Now that Abercrombie is the Governor elect, how soon will he attempt to cultivate Hawaii’s true cash crop? Introduce some type of gambling/lottery? Mention rail? Superferry??? Do more for Hawaii without increasing the budget and then balancing it without deferring tax refunds, defer spending till after the fiscal year, and payroll lags.

I’d greatly appreciate some feedback to use for my semester assignment. lol

  140. Townieboy November 3, 2010 1:51 pm

Worked in Boise for a short stint. And even went drinking with a couple of BSU linemen when they first became a D1 team. Not exactly a Waikiki so it keeps the team focused.

    Very nice people though.

  141. NCAA November 3, 2010 1:55 pm

Anyone with 3D TV? This Saturday’s game will be broadcast in 3D.

  142. sportsforfun November 3, 2010 1:56 pm

The key will be BSU’s strong D-line vs. UH’s O-line. The D-line for BSU really played big in the VT game to begin the year. Our line will have to cut down on the penalties and dominate the player in front of them.

Plus Rolo’s play calling to slow down the rush will be another key.

  143. Curt November 3, 2010 2:30 pm

Sure would be nice if we could convince BYU to join the WAC AND bring back Boise, Fresno, and Nevada. With Utah leaving and possibly TCU, the MWC wouldn’t amount to much if our 3 departing WAC changed their minds and stayed.

  146. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2010 2:41 pm

Not sure why Rausch didn’t get to play against Idaho. We’re told he and Austin are bracketed at No. 2, and their participation depends on the situation.

  147. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2010 2:43 pm

Cayman Shutter confirms that the first time he ever dunked was in that H-O-R-S-E contest this past summer. He said he has dunked five times since then.

By the way, he is the backup holder. But I do not believe he will make the trip.

  148. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2010 2:49 pm

I know people don’t really care about the media, but UH is very nice to the visiting media.

For instance, Boise and Nevada do not allow their players to be interviewed by “opposing” media the week leading to games. UH gives access to Boise and Nevada reporters.

For the Fresno game, Kekaula/Curran had to park three blocks away the stadium. As Kekaula said: “The next time Fresno plays here, make them park at Radford.”

The WAC’s best sports information people: San Jose State, Utah State, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech.

    The worst: Nevada and Idaho.

  149. Stretch November 3, 2010 2:54 pm

I guess RK & BC got their parking pass from the wrong person.

  150. Shoko November 3, 2010 2:56 pm

Not surprising that Nevada and Idaho prevent players from being inteviewed. They have to be coached on what to say and, more importantly, what not to say.

  151. gigi-hawaii November 3, 2010 2:57 pm

way to lose weight for Kekaula.

  152. NCAA November 3, 2010 2:59 pm

  156. Michigan Warrior November 3, 2010 3:18 pm

#124… MIH… wow! Those Boise fans really don’t understand the culture and reason behind the ha’a (haka). Some of them have a pure hatred for Hawaii… probably as the result of Hawaii being the only WAC team to beat them and play them close more consistently than most other WAC teams.

They have the audacity to talk about the teams we’ve beaten in our win streak… and yet they haven’t exactly played a tough schedule so far either.

Can’t wait for Saturday to get here!

    Go, Warriors! Own that field!!!

  168. RedZone November 3, 2010 3:37 pm

BSU players use their hands a lot. They grab receivers. Their oline grabs jerseys and pads. The refs don’t call penalties on them so UH players will have to fight thru it and play smart ball.

  169. NCAA November 3, 2010 3:38 pm

lol Ms. gigi-hawaii. You have a 3D TV?

I’m still young and haven’t experienced many experiences of a lifetime but I really don’t think that watching the game in 3D would be one of my top 1000 experiences of a lifetime. lol

    in regards to your inquiry…

    legalize weed.

I know the moral police will come here and speak of how this is so wrong but given Neil’s history, if he could find a way to legalize it, tax it just like alcohol and cigarettes that could help the budget tremendously.

and lets face it. a lot of people in Hawaii partake.

  171. gigi-hawaii November 3, 2010 3:40 pm

When we were there 2 years ago, we found that all of the people in Boise were very nice, and the fans at the game were courteous too. Of course, I’ve always wondered if that would be the case if they lost the game… I hope you get to find out! 😀

And isn’t Powder Puff going too?

  180. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2010 4:16 pm

Not sure if I should reveal this, but Boise fans are very nice.

Boise’s campus is beautiful, and the downtown is really clean. It has an old feel to the place, like Ogden, but it is nice.

And everybody wears Boise State shirts. You would think there would be some people wearing Idaho shirts, but no, pretty much everyone is dressed in orange and blue.

  181. Shoko November 3, 2010 4:17 pm

    NCAA #159,

If you think you need to be of legal age to enter a strip club, you would be missing out. I was nineteen when I entered a strip club (that served alcohol) for the first time. Told the bouncer I was in the military and it was my patriotic duty to participate in one of the great American past times. He let me in with no cover (woot!). When I got in and a stripper came up to me, I must looked like a newbie, cause she started to laugh. Told her it was my first time, and she gave me a free lap dance, however, I did have to buy her a beer, that cost me 10 bucks. 🙁

For those going to Boise…I heard on Guy Fieri’s show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives that Westside Drive-In and Bar Gernika were good places to grind….

  191. PowderPuff November 3, 2010 4:49 pm

Rite of passage for manhood? It was a rite of passage for Tsaikohood for me. 🙂 What’s up, Ronnie! Wish you were going!!! USMA – yes, I’ll be going. I’ll look for you and wifey. I will look like the green/white/black fashion disaster there, so just look for me. I can name a few other Tsaikos who I know are going, including 2 who live in Washington State. 🙂

  192. whitey November 3, 2010 4:52 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos.

  193. whitey November 3, 2010 4:58 pm

ok, your friendly bm in vegas thinks uh is more than a longshot to win. i don’t know if it is insulting or can you smell the flowers, but for entertainment purposes, uh is a 10-1 underdog. against fresno we were 4-1, nevada 3-1, so our “doggies” are more than friendly puppies, they bite big time. GO WARRIORS!!!!! Bite them ponies.

  194. whitey November 3, 2010 4:59 pm

pp, have fun. like i need to remind you. hahahahahahaaaa

  195. Ronnie November 3, 2010 5:05 pm

Hi PP! I so wish I could be there! We wouldn’t be able to talk for a few days after, but we would have a GREAT TIME!

  196. madeinhawaii November 3, 2010 5:05 pm

    whitey..

Nevada, 3-1?, That was a very close game..

Fresno, 4-1?, Our Warriors blew them away…

Boise.. 10-1? I guess that means our boys will decimate them and take no prisoners, eh?

  197. Ronnie November 3, 2010 5:07 pm

PP, are you guys sitting in the Hawai’i visitor section?

  198. whitey November 3, 2010 5:08 pm

in today’s world, it seems that a lot of media cannot make a go without just reporting a sad story, like andy irons passing, without sticking in inuendos than claim freedom of the press when the story was wrong. somehow the word “freedom” has no value except to be used as a legal defense. I have never met Andy Irons, but have read about his many accomplishments as a young surfer growing up on Kauai and becoming a legend in the surfing world. The headlines should have read “Andy Irons, Surfing Champion and Child of Hawaii has passed away”. Simple and very understandable.

It was for c_c too! 🙂

    whitey,

    What Sheraton Hawaii Bowl?

  202. whitey November 3, 2010 5:16 pm

mih, hope didn’t confuse you, but the larger number is the opposition and the 1 is uh. so in simple terminology, if you was with rasu and taking uh, you would have 4 times more to spend if you took uh against fresno. this line is strictly straight up with no points, so for this game in vegas with rasu, you can put 100 on uh to win a 1000, but if you like the ponies, you need to put 1500 to win 100. this kind of wager is only available in vegas.

  203. whitey November 3, 2010 5:19 pm

Duffer, you’re on. What time is game????

  204. d1島 November 3, 2010 5:20 pm

  206. PowderPuff November 3, 2010 5:21 pm

Hey, duffer…yeah, I would’ve beaten Cassy, then I would open my eyes and wake up. 🙂 I’ve heard how awesome she is. And the kid – Keyton, he is awesome too, I’ve seen first hand. He is soooo polite too. I don’t think I was that mature in high school.

Hi, whitey!!! I’ll *try* to have fun. I might have to pack some Scotchguard for my poor jeans on Saturday. No matter, ST’s cowbell is coming with me. Oh, wafan, you better bring earplugs – I am serious. Ronnie, don’t know where I’m sitting…I think it’s in the Hawaii section.

  207. whitey November 3, 2010 5:24 pm

For this game, my one request from da warriors, each person connected to da team makes da team go and da team will be a winner!!!!!! GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!

  209. Pomai November 3, 2010 5:29 pm

THIS NEEDS TO BE REPEATED UP UNTIL GAME TIME:

Nuff said.

  210. whitey November 3, 2010 5:33 pm

somehow da warriors appear to be like the calm before they storm boise. i personally think there is tremendous pressure on the boise team and if they flinch, this will be a black saturday for them, both literally and figurally.

  211. whitey November 3, 2010 5:34 pm

pomai, email it to all the uh coaches. and also tell them pride will be available for one of the next three games.

Great feature article on Chad Owens.

As he recovered two years ago from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Chad Owens contemplated whether his future included football.

“I was on that side where I was not playing football, I was out of the game,” the Argonauts’ star on special teams said. “You don’t know how good you have it until you lose it. I didn’t know what to do with my life, and that’s why I play the game the way I do.”

“If I said I knew he was going to be (the favourite for) special-teams player of year, I would be lying,” Argos head coach Jim Barker said. “He has turned out to be, well, you just never know until you coach a guy.

“He has the respect of everyone in this league — they know he makes us a different team.”

    For Mana Silva…

    Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

    Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

    by William Ernest Henley

    you go Warrior!

    lead the defense….

Whether it was to even our win/loss record or get the better of our win loss record, our “big” games this season (Fresno, Nevada) have been tie breakers or tie makers…. Boise is no different with Coach Mack. Mack was here as the Warrior DC in 1999. Then again in 2007… then as Head Coach from 2008… he’s 2-2 against the Broncos. And this season, we’re doing good on the tie breakers and tie makers…. I’s an omen.. a good one, too!

    Go WARRIORS!

  230. whitey November 3, 2010 7:24 pm

TY, figured you’d be drooling too. hahahahahaaa

  231. whitey November 3, 2010 7:25 pm

bhf2, won’t be able to make any home games, but will need to make a short trip to hilo sometime in dec, but will definitely see you all at the Hawaii Bowl.

  232. whitey November 3, 2010 7:26 pm

mih, you absolutely correct and i neva even look at it that way. yeah, the larger the moneyline, the more da warriors kick okole. ouch, ouch, ouch, oweeeeee!!!!!!

  233. madeinhawaii November 3, 2010 7:28 pm

Warriors have been really patient these past two games. Not pressing the deep pass unless the receiver has a step or two ahead of his man and taking what they are given and massaging a few extra yards to get the first downs. Not panicking when they don’t score on their first possession or following an interception. That patience is paying off and we’ve seen it reflected in the scores and increased time of possession for our Offense. It is this patience and smoldering confidence that will help make our Warriors Victorious on Saturday. I’m looking forward to see Boise fall apart in the 4th quarter as they desperately play catch up.

    Go WARRIORS! Make it so!

  234. whitey November 3, 2010 7:30 pm

the first fall evening is here where i live and it feels good. don’t know if it will rain or “snow”, but if this front passes tonight, tomorrow going be one good day for marketing.

just looking at some of the previous posts and makes me feel good because da warriors are not only good this year, but letdowns in the future are a past thing. They will just reload. When have we been truly able to say something like this with all honesty???? Speed and more speed is da warriors trademark and this year’s team is the foundation of what the future warriors will be like. GO WARRIORS!!!!!!

  236. TYaiea November 3, 2010 7:38 pm

Mahalo c_c, with your posting, no need watch the news and can see all the tv channel sports. IMUA Warriors…

  237. whitey November 3, 2010 7:38 pm

i wouldn’t be surprised if JD starts looking at “bigger” names to play as non conference games and that would be a huge step for da warriors. Looked at what some of the pony fans are saying and it is not what you expect. Many are not happy with their future schedules because there are no challenges. Every team wants to have a winning season, but to move up the ladder, you need to take on the challenges and beat them. GO WARRIORS!!!!!!

  238. whitey November 3, 2010 7:40 pm

i didn’t look up the details, but is the de from idaho, lavarias, from oahu or is he related to lyle l who played for da warriors?????

What I like about the Warriors this year…they’re playing some solid defense. IMO in JJ’s era, seemed like “we can score more than you” syndrome…never too strong on defense just outscore them.

    Tom Mui:

I watched with great interest Gov-elect Abercrombie’s view on UH-Manoa and its continued Div1 status. He even referred to Gov Burns and his vision in making it Div 1 status and the many benefits it brings to Hawaii – Gov-elect even pointed out twice how athletics leads to increased academics and status.

I was surprised that he pointed out how he would like to see the State’s budget contain a line item for UHAD “travel expenses” and that it not be included in the UH budget. This, in his opinion, will allow Hinshaw and Donovan greater lattitude in moving Hawaii into the future regardless of conference affilation. He also allued to how the State benefits from a good athletic program – tourist $$$ – air/hotel/car and bus rentals – increased state taxes, etc.

As whitey pointed out, scheduling “bigger name” teams here, like USC, is a tremendous economic benefit to the state. 2 big games annually would certainly help UHAD income posture. I would like to see Hawaii open each season with a big name BCS school at Aloha Stadium – one from each conference. Don’t know if a school would agree, but coming to Hawaii with the possibility of losing is no different that a conference game against one of the top tier teams. Who would have thought that Mississippi would defeat Florida in 2010.

This, along with the Honolulu Maraton and major golfing events, contribute imensely to the income of Hawaii.

  247. bighilofan2 November 3, 2010 8:49 pm

what a big biG bIG BIG boost to Hawaii

to have a Governor talk like that!

way to go, Neil. now, back up that talk.

all i gotta say is, thank you thank you thank you!

    and…..

    Go Warriors!

  248. bighilofan2 November 3, 2010 8:53 pm

what a way for the State elect to boost US.

i wuz gonna say no way heez a man wit a mean, vicious, intemperate disposition,

like William Muny outta Hodgeman County, Mazuuree. i wuz wrong.

thanks for giving me hope, Mr. Abercrombie.

  249. HawaiiMongoose November 3, 2010 8:54 pm

    Well, now here’s a surprise:

    http://www.argusleader.com/article/20101103/UPDATES/101103040

It seems South Dakota has changed its mind at the last minute and decided NOT to join the Big Sky. Instead the Coyotes will accept a last-second offer to join the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Montana’s new president previously worked at South Dakota. Some folks are wondering if he tipped off South Dakota that Montana is leaving for the WAC, and so South Dakota decided to pass on the Big Sky invitation.

Others are thinking Montana’s new president was in the process of engineering South Dakota’s (and North Dakota’s) entry into the Big Sky to strengthen the conference and make it easier for Montana to turn down the WAC, only to get burned when his old South Dakota buddies got a better offer.

Ahhh, this conference realignment stuff… it’s like an unending soap opera…

  250. bighilofan2 November 3, 2010 8:56 pm

heck, cannot wait for Linda to leave and get Neil on da job.

gots to strike while da Iron is hot.

Warriors put a big smile on erryting dat is good about Hawaii.

wat a way to start a positive projection about education.

    big at da top.

    way to go Mr. A.

  251. NYUH November 3, 2010 9:01 pm

Just from an economic view B & B laws probably mean most profits leave the island, leaving behind a few jobs and some shopowner, restaurant, and rental car profits. They probably also raise hotel rates and price out a lot of visitors, further reducing state revenues. But the islands are small and each visitor brings externalities, costs that residents have to pay in terms of traffic, pollution, and cultural effluence.

Of course what I’m really interested in is the game this weekend! Glad Smith is back.

  252. bighilofan2 November 3, 2010 9:15 pm

of course we’re all interested in the Boise game.

Ferd’s article yesterday was a winner, hoping for the best from the top. I dunno how they did it, but putting Neil on da show, what a winner of a idea!

thinking back, the June Jones leaving fiasco makes it easier for the Governor to help the Legislature get OUR priorities right.

athletics as a whole may not be the top priority, it is A PRIORITY! and Warrior FOOTBALL is the TOP PRIORITY. IT IS THE IMAGE OF OUR STATE. there are other sports, and many great athletes for whom we are proud to call our representatives. but lets face it folks, THE WARRIORS PROJECT OUR PRIDE IN CALLING OURSELVES HAWAIIAN, whatever their COLOR or RACE or WHATEVAZ. talk about da underdog, dat is US.

i’m sooo glad that we have Coaches and Players who like playing for all of us. Thank you!

  253. Curt November 3, 2010 9:39 pm

    A-House,

Over the years, it seems to me that the run-and-shoot takes a few games before everything is in synch. Therefore, I’d prefer to see us start out with less challenging opponents and bringing in the big-name BCS teams later. However with the Pac12 scheduling 9 in-conference games and informed to schedule out-of-conference games early, it seems very difficult to set up such a schedule.

What’s interesting this year is that it was the defense that was a little slow getting out of the gates. Regardless, I sure would like play the USC and Colorado games now. We’re a much better team now.

  254. whitey November 3, 2010 10:15 pm

curt, with coach mouse giving coach rolo guidance on the run and shoot, it looks like mouse is also helping rolo develop more variation or making sure rolo understands how to take it to another level. rolo may not be on the same level as jj, but this year he is doing things on offense which has a different flavor from jj. i think if mouse stays and guides rolo for at least 2-3 more years, rolo will be in huge demand and we may have a hard time keeping him, but this would be a huge feather in the cap for coach mc and mouse. after this season, coach mc should have another coach be an asst to rolo, so when he leaves, da warriors won’t miss a beat. this is just my take.

  256. whitey November 3, 2010 10:27 pm

as i keep reading what coach peterson is saying, it seems that boise will have major problems with da warriors and this game could break their back. i would be most happy if da warriors do that.

BHF2 ~ Let Neil walk-the-walk and hire Doris Sullivan to run the Gov’s education reform team. Who better to advise the Gov on how to deal with our scholar-athletes?

All bitterness aside, as we know who the folks are who chased Doris out of her director’s chair and sent her into an early retirement. It wouldn’t do any good to hunt them down, so let them go off into hate heaven. Besides, the more noise they make, the more negative attention they draw to themselves.

The new Gov can pick her up, dust her off, and let her show him how she and her very able partner ‘TJ’ put hundreds of our young athletes into colleges and universities.

  261. Curt November 3, 2010 11:09 pm

    whitey,

We definitely need to start grooming someone. If Rolo leaves soon, I would think Mouse takes over as offensive coordinator for the time being. As I mentioned before, I believe we need to groom someone like grad assistant, Inoke Funaki, by bringing him in as the QB coach as soon as possible. However, a coaching slot would have to open up first. And where would that come from? Mac has to get his plan in place soon.

curt, personally I don’t think rolo will leave anytime soon, but if da warriors is successful in 2011 and 2012, he will be history at uh. my personal choice is to see if somehow uh can bring back craig stuzman. he pays attention to the basics and knows the value of hands. not important till end of season, but like to plan ahead, so no get caught with underpants down. hahahahahahhaaa

Stuzman would be a fine addition. With Mouse, Rivers and Lelie around, I’m not too worried there. However, I think Mac has to groom the next offensive coordinator ASAP. That individual I feel should a QB like Inoke.

Re: New Governor. Great orator, poor fiscal manager. Hawai`i is in poor financial state. From where will the dollars come? Do you really think Lingle wanted to furlough the state and our educational system? Do you really think we should have bailed out a poorly run Aloha Airlines? Do you really think the state economy and wages can improve without incentifying businesses? With two Dems in the house, its a good thing we have Dan to pork barrel for us. Hawai`i keiki voted wiser than their parents. At such a young age they see the potentially disastrous future we are headed toward. Time for Coach Mac to design a line of succession. Rolo and Aranda as associate head coaches. See who emerges as his heir. Miano isn’t going anywhere, and he got passed over for DC. He and Cal have the years for state retirement. Let Tormey and Shaw get the years for a state pension, then keep them all on as Assistant Coaches.

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Kekoa,

    Pomai,

    Curt,

I hear what you’re saying about the new Governor. maybe i feel the same way, but i’m not gonna say that. No sir.

Neil is now the new Governor to be. I wish he was Governor now, not in 2 months. with him being the Governor, on the first day of the certainty that he will be our next Governor, I gotta give him credit for making some of us feel really good about hope for UH’s future. I’ve had enough bad news and vibes about Fresno, Boise, Nevada, WAC. We, Hawaii, could use some good news. Thats what the L&L show did for me, with Neil.

Before Tuesday, I was NOT a supporter of Neil Abercrombie. But I am now, and its still early Thursday morning. When I called the Lt. Gov.’s office 2 years ago, trying to talk to Duke, get some interventin for the Cooke Ching Field returf bruhahahahaha that was taking forever, talked to Mr. Souza, well, things finally got fixed, but it wasn’t because of any gov’t intervention – fixing the field – finally – was slow as molasses.

Now, I’d like to think that a public speech here or there coulda sped up and fired up da masses, because the clog in the wheel wasn’t going away, had conviction he was right and da Cooke Ching field fix could wait cuz he was entitled to da “process”, yada yada.

If Hawaii wants to play wit da bigtime, we gots to have a big time projection. and every year, we gonna have problems with $$$. At least we know we gonna have a man at da top who can look Mack in da eye  and try fo help us fo no mo excuses. 😆

  284. bighilofan2 November 4, 2010 4:10 am

    Kekoa,

    DORIS SULLIVAN

I agree with you about DORIS SULLIVAN.

100%. Just not sure of the best scenario for her. For her to be at her best game, you think she’d have to have autonomy – not under da BOE. she is much much mo big dan UH, has had a greater impact for Hawaii dan jus fo UH.

  285. bighilofan2 November 4, 2010 4:11 am

    but UH could use Doris.

Rolo will be on the fast track. He will go from OC to head coach, very quickly. If not here with the Warriors, then somewhere else for sure.

Don’t have a crystal ball so cannot tell the future. Just have a hunch though. that it will work out that way.

Hawaii has a few football alumni that will explode onto the coaching scene in a bigtime way in the near future. Rolo is one. Ulbrich is number two. We as fans will need to express ourselves, if we think that we know what is best for the program. It is also known among some that former Hawaii high schol athletes that played elsewhere may want to become coaches in the near furture. One is still playing center for the Chicago Bears. The other is a recently retired offensive guard who played for the Jags and the Saints. The center will probably end up coaching in the NFL. The guard is already coaching at a local high school.

  306. USMA BOW FAN November 4, 2010 5:23 am

Hoo-ray for the Boise weather report.

    Politics:

Only a liberal dem like Neil can take on the entrenched interests in the legislature and have a chance to get Hawaii’s finances in order. Doesn’t Hawaii have one of the worst under-funded government pension obligations in the country?

We need our federal legislators to be looked at as legislators and not walking, talking checkbooks. We need term limits (I like the 4 terms for reps and 2 terms for senators plan) to ensure that seniority does not continue to pervert the political process.

  307. bighilofan2 November 4, 2010 5:24 am

nice to hear about the future… sure hope the future is bright for the Warriors…

    BHF2 ~

I meant for Doris to operate as a part of the Gov’s task force on education as an independent counsultant. If she is tied to just UH, those parents who have children that cannot meet the scholastic or physical skill level to compete at the D-1 level will be out in the cold.

As it is, after the LOI signing in Feb 2011, the PIAA

may not exist. Having the support of the new Gov will assure the program can be led by someone who could pass her knowledge of the recruiting/entrance process on to all who qualify.

  309. Pride. November 4, 2010 5:25 am

I still believe that it would be smart to have someone on the staff who has an intimate relationship with the coaches and programs in the L.A. City area of C.I.F. schools. Rainbow Cliff’s backyard.

As I’ve said before, for every five and four star athlete from that area that goes to USC, there are three and two star athletes flying under the radar who are just as good. These three and two star athletes are as good or better, but not as big or tall as the four and five star guys. We need to go toe to toe with the competition and compete for these guys.

  310. bighilofan2 November 4, 2010 5:32 am

    USMA BOW FAN

Obviously this isn’t a political blog, but I just wanted to pipe up and say that term limits can be disastrous. The role of a legislature is to product legislation. There are lots of subtle intricacies involved and if you write bad legislation there can be long-standing repercussions on a number of fronts. The biggest problem is that if you have a continuous influx of new legislators it puts even more power in the aides that they hire away from the term-limited legislators because without those experience aides they simply cannot do their jobs. The aides are largely anonymous and unaccountable, at least directly, to the public. The whole system becomes even more back-room than it already was.

The are built-in term limiting devices called ballot boxes.

  327. Pomai November 4, 2010 6:54 am

    Once again:

Nuff said.

bhf2 – all is well, just keeping you on your toes. ‘the beast’ returned to Weber State and is in class and training and red shirting this year. with 2012 season burdened with so much uncertainty for UH / WAC, being his Senior year….. the decision was made to return to the Big Sky Conference and play out his career there. mahalo, he is doing fine and will be home for the holidays.

pride – i agree about the myriad of choices available for UH coaches in the future, i still feel that one of the greatest O-line coaches who has placed countless athletes into D-1 programs and even the NFL has always been readily available, but never consulted. time will tell

Pomai – I hear your brother, LOUD AND CLEAR 🙂

Homey – miss you, long time no stab sushi together, haha, 🙂 🙂

One thing I have noticed about BSu is that they have been very good at picking out the weakness of the other team and then play to take advantage of it. Well right now that means our special teams, so we need to step it up, play with abandon, leave it all on the field.

  339. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 4, 2010 8:16 am

Last night, I tried to find a story in the Star-Advertiser about Doris Sullivan – went back a week, but I was not able to find any reference at all by looking at the headlines in both the regular stories as well as the sports stories.

She mentioned during a conversation last year that she was, like all the others who worked in the PIAA, a volunteer and only received reimbursements for her expenses. I gather that must have changed.

Sorry to read here that she is no longer involved with PIAA.

Could someone here provide a link to a story as to what happened? If not, then how about providing the information here so that those of us who somehow missed the initial announcements can be brought up to speed.

BHF and others: As soon as Tuesday’s election is certified, all legislators will report to work. The new Committee chairs will be announced before Thanksgiving. For us, the committees in the State House & Senate we will want to look at closely are Higher Education/Education, Economic Development (S)& Tourism (H)because that’s where Aloha Stadium issues are placed, Finance/Ways & Means, and Judiciary.

Neil & Brian will be sworn into office on Monday, December 6; however, they have already started working on who will serve in DaGov’s Cabinet and who will be core staffers with whom Jim Donovan & Virginia Hinshaw will be working.

The critical departments we need to track – especially who will head them- are the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism and the Department of Accounting & General Services.

Because the University of Hawai`i is semi-autonomous, the Legislature and the Governor cannot directly intervene in either its day-2-day operations or its long-term planning; however, unlike Lingle who ignored the University System, it is my understanding that President Greenwood will be asked to be a part of the the Cabinet.

Click http://www.hawaii.edu/admin/regents/index.php to see who currently serves.

As for Regent nominations, it looks as if there are four positions – out of 15 – to be filled by next June 30th. That process is handled by the Regents Candidate Advisory Council. Click

https://www.hawaii.edu/rcac/ for more information about it.

With respect to the Stadium Authority, it doesn’t look as if Neil will begin to have an influence there for at least two more years. The Authority is way off most people’s List Of Things To Do except for a couple of legislators who have stepped up to take a much more careful look at the Authority’s decision-making process.

What I suggest is that we start collecting the names of qualified people to submit to DaGov’s office to be named to the Authority. As soon as I find out what the nominating process is, I’ll post it here.

Remember – all appointments to all boards & commissions as well as Cabinet officials must be ratified by the State Senate. The only exceptions are appointed staffers who work within the Governor and Lt. Governor’s offices.

If you have any process questions about how things get done at either the city or state level, please ask. If I don’t know, then I’ll be glad to find out and post the answer here.

Off to a round of meetings at 9 am, 1 pm, and 5 pm and then the Wahine basketball season opener this evening.

    Have a good day.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Intriguing article. I came across your site a while back when searching for articles dealing with retirement. I know I’m a little late in posting my comment but the article made a lot of sense and I enjoyed it. I can’t say that I agree with all the points you made but it was unquestionably enlightening! I run a small US company that manufactures a line of collectible political gifts that commemorate the great leaders, speeches and events of American politics. I’m trying to create American jobs so I hope you don’t mind me including my link in this post. I’m always looking to promote our American made products and I still believe America just keeps getting better and better in spite of our current difficulties. I’m not sure if my earlier post was received so I’m trying again. BTW… I’m a frequent visitor to your blog and will return again soon. Thanks again for a great blog post and your points about retirement.

When looking out for an inexpensive flat iron, you should make sure you compare different sites for the best prices. Do not let the price alone fool you though. You have got to make sure that they are selling authentic flat iron as there are plenty of sites that are selling copies of the product. Buying the flat iron from credible web stores is a great idea.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The measurements have to become extended into the rooms next door so that they’re able to be a part with the remodel. Only mark the ones that will have their partitions eliminated or opened up slightly. Draw them out so that they’re beyond the region where they would usually link towards the kitchen and make sure that the measurements are recorded.

If you can take the taste, you ll get results on this products. Summary, effective at making your muscles grow, and making you heave.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  533. garmin nuvi update December 2, 2010 12:14 pm

I have both a garmin Nuvi 650 and also a model 880 that both failed within 24 hours of each other. I sent them back to garmin to get worked on , they came back fixed with no details of the problem that was repaired Then 2 weeks later they both the 880 and also the 650 failed again. I was able to update the garmin 650 with the latest firmware and it started working again. Then 2 weeks later the 880 failed too. There is clearly a problem with this series of garmin gps. I am about to send my units back in again and will make note of this, hoping for a updated replacement.
