• I watched two wide-angled videos of Nevada’s long punt and kickoff returns against the Warriors. For Warriors fans, the hopeful conclusion is both breakdowns are correctable. On the kick return, the kickoff was inadvertently placed in the middle instead of wide of the hashmark, the intended target. There also appeared to be at least two illegal blocks at the opening of the gap that led to the long return. On the punt return, the punt did not have enough hang time and also was too much toward the middle. That opened the way when the first defender missed the tackle. Correctable, but to the coaches, not acceptable. Those breakdowns overshadowed otherwise decent special teams’ work, in which there were positive grades awarded to 22 of the 28 plays.

• Right tackle Laupepa Letuli and middle linebacker George Daily-Lyles were both limping because of right-ankle sprains. Both are expected to play in Saturday’s road game against Utah State.

• Fooled once, the UH coaches promise that this will not be a “trap game.” The Warriors were heavily favored in the previous meeting in Logan, Utah, in 2008, but squandered several scoring opportunities and had no answer for quarterback Diondre Borel. On that trip — the first leg of a two-game journey — the Warriors arrived  in Utah on Thursday night. This time, they will depart Wednesday afternoon.

And, yep, going to Logan. Leave Wednesday night.

  13. BleedGreen808 October 19, 2010 2:21 am

    Good morning Hawaii!

    Aloha from Tashkent, Uzbekistan!

The Warriors and coaches better not be fooled by Utah State’s record. Their QB is the key to winning the game. Contain him like we did against Kaepernick and this should go in the “win” column.

    Have a great day everyone!

  14. BigHiloFan2 October 19, 2010 2:26 am

    hiya BleedGreen808.

    Great article. very good.

  30. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 3:42 am

I like today’s article on Warrior Basketball by Brian McInnis. Good to see that “business attitude” starting so early in practice. Coach Arnold’s “Seven Deadly Sins of Defense” should provide for more constant intensity throughout each and every game. That, along with his shots-under-8-seconds philosophy, should make for a fast-paced, intense Warriors Bball team!

Really looking forward to their new season!

  31. BigHiloFan2 October 19, 2010 3:45 am

    Coach Mack

    got a suggestion for you.

    or two.

    1. after the game in Logan, no matta wat,

say hello to the fans who traveled to support our Warriors.

not just you, but the players 2.

    2. during the game, you’re gonna get those moments when you’re

wondering what to do, call for a review, go for 2, wattevaz.

plan now for those moments, pik your sidekick now to help you make the

judgment call, give you the swift kick….

    orrrrrrrrrrr,

just call me. coach. i’m in da book.

ST… great article on Corey Paredes! We grew up with some of his uncles in Makakilo. I especially like the last line…

“The key, Paredes said, ‘is to make the play. I’m not looking to make the big hit. If it comes, it comes. It’s more important to bring the guy down for the least yardage. That’s my job.'”

  36. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 4:22 am

ST… funny how, even after Coach Mack brings certain Reno tendencies to the official’s attention before the game, they still ignore those “tackles” made Reno on our kickoff team! Especially when they were clearly made in front of everyone and thier grandma!

Also, it’s a good thing that 2-point conversion fiasco didn’t come back to bite us!

    Lessons learned, I hope!

Moving on to Utah State’s game…

It was previously reported that Bess received a 2-year extension, but he actually received a *3-year* extension.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess received a three-year, $9 million contract extension, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Tuesday.

Some had reported the deal, signed over the weekend, was a two-year deal.

  51. Hank October 19, 2010 5:26 am

In the Seattle vs Chicago game this weekend, the Bears were down in the waning seconds and attempted an onside kick…the Seahawks played it perfectly by assigning players to BLOCK for the receiver who was focused on catching the ball.

The Bears never got close to the receiver.

Pete Carroll would have been helpful in our game against Nevada.

  52. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 5:26 am

#48… Annoddah Dave… According to ST’s article, “McMackin dances around 2-point conversion questions”, Coach Tormey said,

the Warriors could not call for a fair catch on the play. At first glance, it appeared the kick lofted directly to a Nevada player. In reviewing the video, it was noted the Ricky Drake’s kick struck the ground and bounced high in the air. A receiving team is not allowed to fair catch a bouncing kick.

Mahalo, everybody! And no fo’get… keep da votes coming for Moniz! Here’s the present standings:

    http://www.voteobrien.org/standings.asp

Moniz is on the verge of passing the next two guys. If we can keep this pace, (or even get more votes per day from here on out), we may be able to get Moniz close to the top 10!

  56. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 5:33 am

If the front row guys have no play on the ball, I wonder if they are coached to block the first wave of guys running at them?

Of course, with everything going at full speed, it’s a split second decision as to what each player must do.

But, while the kicking team must wait for the ball to travel 10 yards from the kickoff line of scrimmage, the receiving team can step forward to retrieve the ball or make those blocks.

Michigan Warrior…you are exactly right, and I don’t doubt that there are a few coaches on the UH staff who are thinking the same thing…in frustration.

I would not be surprised to see our special teams coach get reassigned to another position after the season is over.

re: comments from last post about the Wides dogging it on some plays.

If that were the case, the answer is most certainly, “No, you’re not the only one noticing it.”

I think it’s being shown that one key addition to the mix this season is the “grandfather of the R ‘n S” being on staff. All the receivers are getting coached on the nuances of their positions to a much finer point than ever before. (sorry to step on some toes there but, it is what it is)

Part of that is how the precision of the routes sometimes “set up” other routes to be open. I don’t believe there could be much opportunity for any receiver to “dog it” without it being noticed, if not from the booth during the game, then certainly in film review.

  70. Okole Maluna October 19, 2010 6:00 am

Great News that ESPN is considering Warriors @ Boise State!

It’s too bad that Benson didn’t schedule us for December 4th Broncos’ conference finale, when both of us will be undefeated conference teams for WAC Title.

What national coverage that will be, since most of NCAA team are done playing.

Specutlation is that ESPN waiting to see how Warriors does against Utah State this Saturday at Logan.

Well Pomai I predict: UH 38 Utah State 0

Our Defense finally comes thru and completes both ends of the half playing a complete Defense against Utah State.

And to Benson: Please hold out for ESPN coverage NOT ESPN2 or ESPNU which has less viewers we can use all the national coverage the Warriors can get at this point.

And to our AD: I’m not speaking for everyone but we don’t need refund for our PPV.

If it’s on National coverage everyone can see how Warriors will beat Boise State (hopefully #1 by then) will be a great satisfaction enough.

    GO Warriors!!

  71. Okole Maluna October 19, 2010 6:04 am

About the whole 2 point conversion thing… You could say that the 1 point is not better than 0 points and that even a remote chance of 2 points is worth the gamble, but there is also a psychological aspect of finishing the touchdown off. As we all know our red zone touchdown offense has not been a sure thing this year. Maybe you don’t really need the 1 point, but to not get the 2 could be deflating for a team compared to the almost guarantee of the 1 point. It is not all just a numbers game.

  75. d1島 October 19, 2010 6:12 am

It is not all just a numbers game.

    expat,

Rolo *admitted* that the coaches made a mistake and should have gone for 2. During his radio interview he also said that Mack did not check the chart because if he had then UH would have gone for 2. I’ve read 4 or so people’s recaps of that interview, here is the first one I could find:

Rolo said this morning on the Bobby Curran show that the coaching staff basically got caught up in the moment after converting on 3rd down for a TD. It’s something that they will have to account for better in the future.

BIG props to Rolo for just stating what happened without a”story” or “coach speak” about what happened.

Thanks to Brian McInnis for the Great attitude article on Warrior Basketball by Brian McInnis “business attitude” starting so early in practice. Coach Arnold’s “Seven Deadly Sins of Defense”.

I can already see many interesting ways coach Arnold’s motivational sessions.

I was disapointed to see ‘No fans’ at the UH ticket office on the first day of Basketball season ticket sale.

Where is the Warriors Fans? Please also back up the new coach and especially the New Warriors BB players by becoming a New Season ticket holder.

We are going back to the WAC Tournament and More!

I’m already booked for Las Vegas in March!

I’m expecting to see both Dana’s and Gib’s team in Las Vegas and stay a few more weeks on the Mainland!

Congrats to Pomai. Can’t believe he is a great-grandfather. He looks 45. haha

Congrats to MW for winning the shirt. Hoping Avis will pick my name next.

  90. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 6:37 am

    Okay, Pomai, but what if…

    UH 35 – 28 Utah State

And what if get these guesses:

    #1. UH 31 – 28 USU = 4 points off

    #2. UH 32 – 27 USU = 4 points off

    #3. UH 33 – 26 USU = 4 points off

    #4. UH 34 – 25 USU = 4 points off

    #5. UH 35 – 24 USU = 4 points off

None went over, and all guesses are within 4 points total of the final score. No more tie-breaker?

Just trying to avoid one argument, if the above somehow happens.

  91. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 6:38 am

Mahalo! No matters… if no fit me, the wife can use ’em as one night shirt for sleep time!

By the way, Moniz is now #20, and 20 votes behind Kaepernick!!! Great job, people!!!

Makes me wonder if someone from Hawaii is making ads about Hawaii products and placing it on other blogs to which others are thinking; what an idiot! But click on it anyway because the curiosity is just too darn tempting.

  109. Shoko October 19, 2010 7:10 am

Was reading the Idaho Statesman and only one Statesman reporter thinks Boise State will be in the BCS NC Title game. Chadd Cripe (Bronco Beat), Brian Murphy (Columnist), Mike Prater (Sports Editor) picked either a PAC-10, Big 12, or SEC team in the title game. Nick Jezierny (Vandal Beat) picked Boise State and the MWC champ. Whaaat?

  110. Ronnie October 19, 2010 7:10 am

    MW and A-J,

I don’t expect an NCAA appearance in Coach Gib’s first year, however, I do hope for some upsets and an invite to the WAC Tounament. Team does have a promising future for sure tho. I’m excited!

    PolyMom,

I’m praying to be able to go to Boise – especially since it’s the last time we’ll play there. It doesn’t hurt that they are the last WAC stabber we’ll face and it would be great to knock them out of the Top 25 like we did to Nevada…. 😀

  128. Ipu Man October 19, 2010 7:49 am

It’s the attitude not the altitude.

But Utah State may be trying to stick

    their thermometer to UH considering

the game day “weather” will be nice

in the day (65) but brutal at night (32)…

Are they really starting the game at 5pm?

Would it not be better and usual to start

it off at a sunny 9:30am their time???

  129. longdistance808 October 19, 2010 7:54 am

Tiebreaker for guessing the score should be:

Closest to UH score THEN, if still needed, closest to opponent’s score. Not total points b/c then

    UH 65 Them 0

    equals

    UH 33 Them 32

    That makes no sense.

    Anyone else agree?

  130. Ipu Man October 19, 2010 7:57 am

Well…the weather will be a bit warmer as they

changed the weather report in Logan Utah to

only 37 degree low (and a 60 degree high).

And yes, the start time there is 5pm.

btw, 30% chance of rain. That is no problem

for the rainbows…but sure do hope UH knows

    what cold feels like…

  131. Shoko October 19, 2010 7:58 am

    Ipu,

The USU-UH is 2:00 pm PT. ESPN stated 5:00 pm time whiich is ET.

    LD808,

I’m not very good with predicting scores, but I will say that USU has averaged 31 points at home, while UH has averaged 31 points on road games this season. There are still other variables involved that would be account for possible ending score on this game.

  132. Pomai October 19, 2010 7:59 am

#129 – maybe I will have to consult wit da pix’s expert upon his return to da islands aftah his vacation to da mainland pix’s conference. Eh SailorBlue git meeting wen you git home…..

    LD808…

“Without going over”… you forgetting that part that’s already in place!

  134. Shoko October 19, 2010 8:02 am

    Ipu Man,

Correction, The USU-UH game will start at 3:00pm local time.

  135. Ipu Man October 19, 2010 8:03 am

Ooops ET got into the mix…

Still 2pm is when the weather starts to

    first guarter!

Couple of weeks ago, a couple of guesses were real close to the score (UH49-27Fresno).

    UH50-27Fresno – Ala Wai

    UH45-28Fresno – BigHiloFan2

As per the established rules at the time, both guesses went over. So the next person under both ended up winning, which was TYAiea, with a guess of UH44-24Fresno.

that was a very good article about Paredes and his hunting family. Imagine naming your son Hunter, because the family likes to hunt.

  159. Pomai October 19, 2010 8:40 am

The one game of Utah I watched the kid Diondre Borel, seemed like a baller, we need to contain him for sure. As our friend Pride says all the time special teams is very important, this will be the area we need major improvement on, we have the players just need to coach them up.

  160. mctruck October 19, 2010 8:40 am

I think that the last three games, especially against FSU, shows that UH is on a role and this next game will punctuate the direction we’re heading in. I believe our defense want to prove that the last three games were not flukes. I see a blow out by our Waariors…too bad there’s no mercy rule in fb.

  165. Markazulu October 19, 2010 8:44 am

Utah State’s Coach Gary Andersen on Hawaii…

“Hawai’i is a very good football team. I think that they have played extremely well on offense. They are obviously a very explosive football team. They have a tremendous receiving core, a quarterback that runs their offense very well, and an offensive line that is experienced, and works very well together. I don’t see a weak link, I think their running backs also do a nice job for them, and their numbers would speak for themselves. They are a very good offensive football team. One of the big differences I can see is that their defense is playing extremely consistent. They are solid, they are physical and they are good up front and at the linebacker spots. They are also good in the secondary. You have a very well-rounded football team in Hawai’i, again I think that their record speaks for itself. They are an older football team that tagged themselves as being able to have a good year this year with guys coming back for them. It has been so far so good for them. I think it is a challenge for our guys. They are excited about returning back home. We have played fairly well at home this year, and I expect our kids to play well. This will be a big time challenge for us without question.”

  166. CoolEthan October 19, 2010 8:46 am

If ESPN picks up the Boise game, the majority wins!

It’s wonderful living in Constitutional Republic!

  167. Markazulu October 19, 2010 8:46 am

Gary Andersen on our Slot receivers

“They are very well-rounded receivers. They are physical, very good route runners and they understand exactly where they fit within the offensive scheme. The thing that they do they best is that they catch contested balls. If you sit back and look at them, or any great or good wide receiver, they make plays on contested footballs. Their ability to make plays on contested footballs is what sets them apart from being an average wide receiver to being a very good wide receiver. Other than that they have the whole package. You can look at a guy that is fast, you can look at a guy who runs great routes, but the guy that makes the hard contested catches stands out and both of those young men do that.”

  170. Markazulu October 19, 2010 8:49 am

    Gary Andersen

    ON COVERING SLOT RECEIVERS….

“It can create some mismatches, and it lets the receiver work the whole field. He can line up in a number two or three position and he can come across the field on an under route. He can work the middle or the outside of the field both short and deep. You can see where Hawai’i is having a lot of success from 13 to 20 yards in the middle of the field, and that is where Salas and Pilares have been effective making plays. Slot receivers depending on what kind of defense you play can get matched up with linebackers, safeties, or corners it just depends on what you are playing. There is a lot more that goes into covering a slot receiver. They can always pull a slot receiver off the line of scrimmage, and then he will always have four or five yards to operate with so you can’t get up and press them.”

    ON PUTTING PRESSURE ON HAWAI’I…

“They do get back there and throw it pretty fast. I think every true spread offense gets back and throws that football very quickly. Their offensive line is very adequate, they are a big physical front. In my opinion they are close to the best, if not the best offensive front that we have seen this season, at least from what I have seen. Their ability to get the ball out quickly is a big part of what they do. The ability to slow that down and cause some confusion for the quarterback is very important as you try to stop these guys. You can’t let them have the big plays. They can run the football. If you sit back and give them a box that is inviting to run the football, they will hand it off and run the ball, they do a very nice job with that. They have a very well-rounded offense. It is like any offense or defense in America, it is player driven, and it is a very good scheme. I don’t think we line up against any one and say ‘that is a horrible scheme.’ It is a player driven offense and defense and I think they have good players. They are a very talented football team.”

ON HAWAI’I QUARTERBACK BRYANT MONIZ’S ABILITY TO SCRAMBLE…

“He is a very capable scrambler. He has done that all year. He did it last year too when he came in. We saw him get out on us a couple times last year, and we have seen him get out on tape this year. He can hurt you with his feet. He doesn’t want to, he wants to get back there and throw the ball, but if that opportunity presents itself he is not afraid to run, and he is very capable of using his feet no question about it.”

ON ANY CHANGES HE HAS SEEN IN HAWAI’I SINCE THE COLORADO GAME…

“I haven’t seen any really. I am in the middle of breaking down the Colorado game, and from what I remember they got up early, they got in the red zone and were able to score. If you look at this Hawai’i team from a year ago they went through their struggles figuring out who their quarterback was going to be, and their wide receivers were just coming into their own as they went through last year. They entered the off-season and built some momentum then started this season hot. They did stub their toe against a very good USC team. That game could have gone either way, and they lost to Colorado, other than that they have played extremely well. I couldn’t put a finger on it. They are playing with a lot of confidence they are playing with good players, and have a lot of swagger and confidence. You have to walk in and be extremely well prepared, and understand that their offense at times is going to be hot. Your ability to slow them down and make them make plays is key. It is the same on the offensive side of the ball you have to be able to maintain a drive and not allow them to have big plays.”

ON GETTING A CHANCE TO WATCH THE HAWAI’I VS. NEVADA GAME…

“I watched a little bit of it but I didn’t get to see the whole game, but from what I saw it seemed that Hawai’i was dominating on all sides of the ball. Nevada made a late surge and had a chance to win that game and it fell through their hands. Those are two of the best team in the WAC, besides Boise State, with Hawai’i beating Fresno State a few weeks ago and now beating Nevada shows how talented that team is.”

    ON PREPARING FOR HAWAI’I…

“We really have a leg up on Hawai’i with our bye week, we’ve been watching their film and studying their schemes and things like that. We got a great week of practice in preparing for Hawai’i and it will only get better from here, we should be very well prepared to face this team.”

ON THE IMPROVEMENTS BY THE HAWAI’I DEFENSE…

“I agree that they have improved, they held Nevada to 21 points. That’s impressive considering what Nevada has done to other teams they have faced. Hawai’i is beating teams and they are beating them well, it isn’t just being done with offense their defense has stepped up and played well for them. That makes them even more dangerous. They are a strong team and it’s an all around effort for them.”

ON IMPORTANCE OF RUNNING THE BALL AGAINST THEM…

“The run part of football is all about how physical you are, we need to go out there and establish our physical dominance in the running game. It will be tough to run against them, they contain the runner and play technically sound. It makes it tough to beat a team like that, but if we can play technically sound we shouldn’t have a problem running the ball. As a tight end, I am part of the offensive line and I pride myself on blocking and I want to be able to create some holes for our backs and get 200 rushing yards against them. I want to win the battle up-front against them, it’s needed for our offense to be successful.”

SEAN ENESI – SENIOR DEFENSIVE LINEMAN

THOUGHTS ON BYE WEEK AND UPCOMING HAWAI’I GAME…

“We had a good solid bye week, as the captain of the defensive line I wanted to focus on the pass rush. Hawaii has a great passing attack and we watched as they beat number 19 Nevada so we have been focusing on our pass rush, trying to get pressure on Moniz. He is a double threat quarterback, he can beat us down field with his arm and he will also run out of the pocket. We want to establish a contained pass rush with our defensive line and mix it up with a few blitz pressures. We are looking forward to this game this week.”

    THOUGHTS ON HAWAI’I RUNNING GAME…

“Last year their run game killed us, we put in a different package last year that tried to contain the passing offense and they changed it up and started running the ball. Once they started to run, it set up the passing attack for them. So this year we are going to be confident with our rush defense, we are going to look for the run. We are also going to have threats for the passing attack.”

Markazulu… thanks for posting those interviews. Good to see (hear) what they (Coach and players) are thinking in preparing for our game. We need to keep playing solid ball. Fix our mistakes, watch the penalties, and have a great game!

TyAiea… I know, yeah? I wondered about that in the beginning. But, seeing Auburn’s and Boise State’s votes click like they were, I figured, what the hay, Moniz deserves all of our votes. The kid has done everything to get where he now is. His story needs to be told.

Thank Markazulu for what Utah State is thinking.

On another note, Bill Parcells cleaned out his office

Parcells’ four-year contract allows him to leave at any time and collect the balance of the $12 million due him. The deal expires after the 2011 season.

  185. Not an Expert October 19, 2010 9:15 am

    Cause and Effect:

Every choice and/or sequence that is made creates its own history of events.

What did that Nevada quarterback state that 3 plays caused Nevada 21 points and implying they would of won the game. No No No.

Hawaii going for 1 when 2 was the mathematical number that was needed. No No No.

If Paredes didn’t knock the football out Nevada scores. Nevada needs to kickoff and a different chain of events will occur… Paredes knocks out the football Hawaii gets it on its 20 yard line, Hawaii won the game.

Hawaii went for 1 and Hawaii won the game.

Hawaii goes for 2 and fails. Nevada could of won. No one knows cause the chain of events would of change based on the attitudes and energy of each player and coach.

    But,,,, If,,,,, Maybe,,,,, CWS ‘ve.

Never know what the outcome will be at times, only thing is to make the best possible choice to get the best possible result.

Again FACT, Hawaii won the game.

Congratulations to the players and all connected to the program.

Concerning a topic ST brought up last week about planning ahead for your marketing plan. In other words you don’t wake up Sunday morning and come up with the marketing plan for the next game. While the football team takes it one game at a time the marketing department must be planning for every possibility ahead of time. That being said, my promotional slogan for the Idaho game would be “WAC Championship Elimination Game” or” WAC Championship Playoff Game”. Again I’m thinking ahead as the “Marketing Director” not as a Warrior fan. Anyone else with a promotional slogan?

  201. expat October 19, 2010 9:36 am

Garret @#82 – I am not saying that Rolo or Mack did or didn’t make a mistake. I am just saying that it shouldn’t necessarily just be look at the chart and say X or Y in terms of whether to go for 2.

What is an honest assessment of the chances of a 2 point conversion being successful? We are 0-1 so far this year. 0-2 last year. On the other hand Enos is 66 for 66 on PAT kicks so far in his UH career.

Clearly this is an area that could use some work. After all, there have been a number of attempts from inside the 5 yard line this year and while I do not know what the success rate is that might be a pretty good indicator for a 2 point conversion attempt. Against Colorado, for example, we were 0-6 within the 3 yard line.

I would like to think that our offense had a package that would allow a good 2 point conversion percentage, but the evidence would suggest that is not the case. USC scored 7 TDs against us and went for 2 on four occasions and had a 50% success rate — which put them in no better place in terms of points but I guess it gave them some practice.

Perhaps the coaches should have a policy that once they get two or three scores ahead it is time to go for two just to get the reps in. I know that it can be seen as a sign of disrespect, but it is essentially a goal line offense and it seems that we need all the gametime reps we can get.

  202. Ipu Man October 19, 2010 9:37 am

Gigi, Yahoo Sports does not say exactly why,

but that maybe he feels he accomplished

what he was hired to do…and he continued

up to the end of preseason, it said. And still

    http://www.wacsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=10100&ATCLID=205014183

Louisiana Tech quarterback Ross Jenkins, Hawai’i linebacker Corey Paredes and Boise State punt returner Chris Potter were named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.

Jenkins, a senior from Houston, Texas (Langham Creek HS), threw for a career-high 422 yards and three touchdowns in Louisiana Tech’s 48-35 win over Idaho on Saturday. It was the most yards thrown by any quarterback in the nation over the weekend and sixth most this season. He was 31-of-44 with no interceptions and also rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Jenkins escaped without being sacked as Idaho came into the game fourth in the nation in sacks.

  209. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 9:55 am

With the way our defense has been playing against the run lately, that should be a good challenge for our offense for 2-pt. conversion practice.

  210. NYUH October 19, 2010 9:57 am

I was wondering about the 2 point conversion myself. Would have liked the Coach to have a better answer. Appropriate of ST to call him on it. Don’t we still need work in the endzone anyway?

Kid- I used to be a betta breeder- big time. Green is more like turquoise and we were working on a black variation from the green genome (wich also produces blue and steel). Back in an old 286 PC hard drive somewhere, I have pix of those fish… but they were international award-winners.

Black is hard to reproduce so clean blacks are very very rare. But green (not kelly green, tho) can be found.

#270 – Nevada fans can talk all they want. The only thing that matters is that on 10/16/10 they lost. I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up with only 7 wins this season.

  273. Markazulu October 19, 2010 11:40 am

Remember how Kapernick said he lost the game Hawaii didnt do nothing to stop them but they stop themselves well apparently this is there Fans take on it…

“This game comes down to one play. At the beginning of the second half Nevada was driving. As Colin Kaepernick was going into the endzone it looked like he was trying to Spike the ball. It was rulled a touchdown but overturned on the replay. From the side angle it still looked like a touchdown. From the back angle you could see him going into the spike motion early. If he had just tucked the ball and dove that would have erased any controvery. It was ruled a touchback and Hawaii got the ball. We lost by six. That was the easiest of the touchdowns we lost. Hawaii didn’t do anyting on that one. That was clearley Kaepernicks fault but the Ault bashers have been waiting for their chance to blame Ault. Kaepernick wasn’t sharp and made some dumb mistakes. He will be the first one to accept blame for the loss.”

Jeez No Respect hahaha… Thats okay just let the play do the talking.

  274. homey ℞ October 19, 2010 11:46 am

That’s a good one Markazulu. No matter how much they spin the play, replay clearly shows that the ball was knocked loose before the goal line (thanks chawan for the vid). Bottom line, they didn’t dig their own hole, the Warriors dug it for them and they couldn’t climb out.

  277. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2010 11:51 am

“Jeez No Respect hahaha… Thats okay just let the play do the talking.”

You know what the play said on that down? Wait for it… wait for it…

Adrian Klemm is not only an excellent OL coach, but he’s a recruiting superstar. If coach Shaw gets lured away by some big budget school due to UH’s success, the first coach I’d call if I was UH would be Klemm. I like it whenever a Warrior goes on to the NFL or into college coaching…Klemm has done both.

After snagging recruits here and there out of California, the Mustangs are heavily embedded in The Golden State in 2011. The big reason why? It’s behind the efforts of potential non-bcs recruiter of the year Adrian Klemm. The former NFL player/SMU offensive line coach grew up playing high school football in Los Angles and still has many ties to the area.

Moreland chose the Mustangs and his recruiter over schools like USC, Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, Arizona State, and Washington.

Narbonne offensive lineman Dontae Levingston is making the trip to SMU this weekend as well. Levinston has offers from Florida, Oregon, and Washington, but Klemm will look to get another major skin on the wall if he can add the 3-star to the Mustangs’ commitment list.

While Klemm’s done an amazing job out west, he has also won a few big recruiting battles in the state of Texas.

William B. Travis offensive lineman Carter Wall chose SMU over offers from Missouri, Houston, Arizona State, and Mississippi State, electing to be coached by Klemm. Wall will also be visiting this weekend and SMU will look to get him in front of Levingston and another offensive lineman undecided with an offer.

When Klemm won verbals from Moreland and Preston, he showed he had the ability to recruit outside his position. He even impressed more when he landed wide receiver Arrius Holleman from Lubbock Monterey (TX). A wide receiver stuck in a running attack, Holleman had offers from Texas Tech, Houston, and UTEP. He chose SMU due to his relationship with Klemm and will look to take his official visit this weekend.

“Klemm is good people,” stated Holleman to PonyStampede.com last night. “I’m pumped to visit.”

Looking at the special teams stats, UH is:

    #116 in punt returns

    #103 in kickoff returns

#115 in yards allowed per punt return

    #101 in net punting

#22 in yards allowed per kickoff return (short directional kicking and a great job by players like Jordan Monico help here).

I knew that special teams was struggling this year, but these are the 5 categories that the NCAA keeps stats on and UH is far worse in 4 of them than I had thought. This doesn’t mention the 12-men and 10-men on the field situations.

hard to sugar coat those stats…

  295. Garret October 19, 2010 12:17 pm

The other stat that I checked was turnover margin, as that has been a major reason why I think UH has such an improve record. The offense has done an amazing job at limiting turnovers and the defense saved games for UH (Army, Nevada come to mind first) by forcing turnovers.

UH is #10 in the country in turnover margin, getting 1 more turnover per game on average than they give up.

    http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2010&rpt=IA_teamturnovermrgn&site=org&div=IA&dest=O

  296. Garret October 19, 2010 12:19 pm

One other stat I noticed was that UH is #1 in the country with FGs in the red zone (10 so far this season)…though, I don’t know if that is really a stat they want to be the best at.

  300. madeinhawaii October 19, 2010 12:22 pm

  301. Garret October 19, 2010 12:23 pm

hard to sugar coat those stats…

    madeinhawaii,

If the NCAA kept a stat on where teams start after kickoffs, then I think UH’s kickoff defense stat would look worse. The short kickoffs are limiting the return yardage…but that doesn’t mean that kicking short is always better, all that matters is where the kickoff returner ends up being stopped.

I openly worried about the special teams play before the Fresno State game, the special teams almost cost UH the Nevada game, and now after checking the stats I see that perception is reflected in the stats.

  302. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 12:24 pm

A-House… I haven’t seen her or her mom in a few weeks. Thought I might run into them during parent-teacher conferences, but they went to the earlier time slot, while I had to wait for my wife to get home, and ended up going to the later one. She’s a team captain, and she mainly plays Catcher. I see we already have 2 sophomores and 1 freshman on the roster. I’ll try to speak with them to find out what her plans are.

Everyone that lives near us know that my loyalties are with UH! That’s almost all I talk about! And I wear everything UH proudly. In fact, I never leave the house without at least a UH hat.

Jonj… that kid from Folsom looks good… on kickoffs and receiving punts too! Sure would be good to know what’s going on with new recruits. But then again, if it’s all being kept a secret until LoI day, hey, I’m fine with that too. As long as we sign good student athletes who can help us, I don’t care how secretive they run it.

UH had *major* special teams problems in both losses. A huge punt return by USC changed the game’s whole momentum. A missed red-zone FG early in the Colorado game and several other special teams plays changed that game also.

kden gotta stick up for da special team. there was only one time in which nevada pulled off a perfect execution on the play. their cross blocking during the run back opened up the lane need which gave the back a good running lane. I seen three blocker’s just pushing aside the warriors running in their lanes. can not help if your concentrating on staying in your lane and looking for the ball, hard to notice someone coming at you from out of nowhere (aka croberts vs nebraska who got his clocked cleaned on a kick off. ask pride he was on that team I think.)

  322. Garret October 19, 2010 12:49 pm

    Liz,

I would like for Coach Shaw to stay at UH for a long time. However, the facts are that he has Big 10 ties and that UH doesn’t pay its assistant coaches nearly as much as Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12, or even places like BSU.

I would have liked for UH to keep Coach Cav forever, but he left. Coach Mack left after 1999. UH cannot bury their heads in the sand and be left without a plan if coaches are lured away.

When teams have success, their assistant coaching staffs are often pillaged by other teams. Both Rolo and Aranda could also get much more lucrative offers soon, which is why Pride. was talking about signing them to long-term deals as soon as possible. BSU lost their DC after last season, Fresno State loses key assistants every year, and UH with this successful season will be targeted also.

  323. LizKauai m/ October 19, 2010 12:57 pm

Garret- understood (YES- PLEASE SIGN OUR COACHES TO GOOD CONTRACTS, UH ADMIN!). But would it not be more likely that Coach Klemm might also be lured away to the higher-paying conferences?

Like other areas of teaching… some day it won’t be about having to leave a job you love because you can’t afford to stay.

God Bless our teachers and coaches for doing what you do for the generations to come!

  324. madeinhawaii October 19, 2010 12:59 pm

Sadly, if our coaches are offered a much more lucrative deal than here, with promotion or at least the same title, I think Coach Mack, like JJ did for him, encourage them to go and spread their wings.

Sad, but also the way it should be. AND, with luck, they’ll come back more seasoned, with greater contacts, good visibility, high profile, and fans all over ready to fund their football dreams. Imagine if Rolo and Aranda went away for 4-6 years and came back with enough wins, money to retire, high-profiles and a desire to help continue the program building that Mac has started?

Funny.. they were both here in ’99 and ’07.

  327. madeinhawaii October 19, 2010 1:03 pm

Hmm.. Utah and Hawaii are tied at 5 apiece… Nevada and Hawaii were tied going into their final game… Fresno and Hawaiii ended up completely tied… Aren’t Boise and Mac tied at 2-2?

  328. thymeis October 19, 2010 1:05 pm

injured warriors, most players play with pain. Their attitude exudes and have to give it to the OL.

  329. Pride. October 19, 2010 1:05 pm

#322 – Need to always look to not only have coaches who are coaching, but also who are mentoring. In this case Mouse is mentoring Rolo, and Mack is mentoring Aranda. We need to take that a step further and have Rolo mentoring the next OC, and Aranda mentoring the next DC. Have to always be prepared to lose good coaches.

ESPN decided after the UH-Nevada game to show *Nevada* against Utah State on ESPNU. Today’s Star-Advertiser article mentioned that there were 2 more games that ESPNU would pick…this is one of them.

So far, ESPN has chosen to televise *5* of Nevada’s games and just *1* of UH’s games. If UH beats Utah State this weekend (which I expect), then my guess is that UH will get the final ESPNU spot for the game against BSU.

The University of Nevada’s Hall of Fame game against Utah State on Oct. 30 has been selected for a national TV broadcast by ESPNU, the WAC announced Monday.

With the change, kickoff for the game has been moved from 1:05 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This will mark Nevada’s third appearance on ESPNU this season as the Wolf Pack’s wins over Colorado State and San Jose State were also broadcast on the cable channel. This will be Nevada’s fourth appearance of what is now five scheduled appearances on the ESPN family of networks.

Hopefully Manoa won’t be misting too much tonight. I doubt they will be able to re-schedule the game as Christian Brothers University is a very small school and are most likely on a strict travel schedule and budget.

  335. Garret October 19, 2010 1:19 pm

So, UH beats Nevada. They both play Utah State in the future. ESPN picks Nevada to televise. ESPN sure doesn’t seem to like UH.

This is not a good sign the for type of TV deal that UH could get with ESPN. ESPN could televise UH for free at Utah State (no need to send a crew to Hawaii) and declined. ESPN could pick UH’s game against BSU in Boise, but they want to wait to see if UH beats Utah State first.

PolyMom- way to support the little one!

Pride. Yup mentoring. While I expect the players to graduate and move on, I don’t expect that from a winning team of coaches who (I am guessing, I am not there) are unified and harmonized and bringing out the best in their students. I, for one, will be very disappointed if we have such a turnover soon.

  337. Oops October 19, 2010 1:26 pm

I guess they figure Nevada losing to USU is a better game than UH blowing the aggies out.

    jm2375,

Dish subscribers who pay for the “sports pack” (I think it is something like $6 per month) get the Altitude channel. It doesn’t come with the base packages for either Dish or DirecTV unless you live in Colorado or wherever it is considered the RSN.

    Good afternoon Tsaikos….

Garrett #335, I wonder how much of it has to do with ESPN hyping the Nevada-Boise Game as the WAC Championship game and possible National Title Contention BCS Spoiler Game…Mark May, Lou Holtz, Kirk Herbstreit and gang have talked about that for the last few weeks. Even the WAC Network during the Boise Toledo game were saying, “No disrespect to Hawaii and Fresno but come November Nevada and Boise will be undefeated and playing for a Championship.”

Kazz… No, quote of the day from Kirk Herbstreit on the BCS on today’s Sportscenter…”Five weeks from now we will be looking at all these one loss teams on one side and undefeated Boise and Utah on the other side and be thinking what one loss team is going to be playing against one of those for the national title.”……and I know how you love Herbie KAZZ….MWaahahahahahaha

  342. bb October 19, 2010 1:46 pm

I hope the ESPN picks up the Boise game. At least that provides a chance for the game to be in HD.

I pay good money for the pay per view package, plus I have season tix with a PSC at the very least I hope for a quality picture. The Fresno State game was shown to PPV customers via a cell phone cam–Pay Per Crap.

My gut feeling is that the USU will be pay per crap picture again and if espn does not pick up the boise game it will be pay per $hit when you add the blue field to a substandard picture.

Sorry for my language but we in 2010 and lets face it most people by now are only watching channels 1000 and up.

If we can keep that pace, we can get him bumped up close to the top 10. That should hopefully move him into Round Two of the voting.

Thanks, everyone, for doing what you all do!!!

Ok…got “another” $10 charge for the UH-Army game

from “JumpTV”…the link someone gave on this blog.

Be careful if you signed up. I thought it was gonna be

a “TV” link but it turned out to be radio (and not as good

as BC & RK). Anyhow, I thought, oh well, tho I would not

even listen, I would donate the $10 to our Armed Forces.

But evidently they thought once they get your credit card

number they can keep charging you every month. So I had

to call them (long distance ?$) and get them to stop and

credit me back the charge. So take a cue from my mistake.

  363. Pride. October 19, 2010 3:07 pm

In seven games, we have given up only 21 total points in the 1st quarter. Our defense has held five teams scoreless in the first quarter.

    CSU scored 7

    USC scored 14

    Nevada – 0

    Fresno – 0

    LaTech – 0

    Colorado – 0

    Army – 0

re: 2 POINT CONVERSION ANSWER BY COACH MACK…

I think it was a great question to ask Mack and even better to press him on it. Yes we won, but had Nevada made that TD how many people would have been calling for his head?…How many of you were looking at Nevadas last possession and going “Oh $*%#, this don’t look good”

“You can figure out how the thing comes out. Maybe we should have (gone for 2). Maybe we shouldn’t have. But we won the game, so we don’t have to worry about it now. We can move on.”

Honestly I am a bit disappointed with his answer. Yes we won and thats the good part of what we should be thinking about but remember Lou Holtz “You are never as bad as you think you are after a loss, and never as good after a win…” Bottom line learn from both your victories and mistakes.

But really this kind of answer shows some foolishness. Maybe I should take my heart medicine, maybe I shouldn’t…Maybe I should play with gasoline and and matches in my house, maybe I shouldn’t…… It should be “I will do what is sensible and reasonable…”

Mack, I applaud you and luv you for the win, you have given our O and D coordinators the room to make the calls and it shows how much of a better Head Coach you are today…But call things the way they are…there is no logical explanation as to why you would go for 1pt over 2pts (as you demonstrated in your answer)….so just admit it, move on and lets kick some butt in Utah.

ok nuff said with this one.

don’t know if uh has an option, but when they meet bsu and are undefeated, they could decline espn and tell them that the ppv money is less, but ppv is more appreciative of uh, so will stay with them for this game. not slapping espn, but saying that uh has loyalty to their business partners who are willing to stick with them win or lose from start to finish.

  369. Rich2176 October 19, 2010 3:12 pm

ESPN must be doing it’s best Homer Simpson “DOH” right now since they’ve scheduled two late November Friday night Boise games – Fresno on the 19th and Nevada on Turkey (how appropriate) weekend.

Looks like Gameplan is picking up the Warrior game this week, along with Altidude. Not sure how the blackout rules apply to one or the other.

    Warrior/ Opponent scoring by quarter:

    1 – 76 / 21

    2 – 75 / 37

    3 – 55 / 84

    4 – 57 / 42

We are pretty dominant in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarters.

We’ve shown way better consitency in the three WAC games though which means that we are improving.

Hawaii / WAC Opponent Scoring by Quarters:

    1 – 31 / 0

    2 – 24 / 17

    3 – 31 / 31

    4 – 31 / 28

  374. LizKauai m/ October 19, 2010 3:14 pm

  375. Willie October 19, 2010 3:15 pm

Might have missed comments on the onside kick with 3:06 left in the game after Nevada scored. T.V. said Hawaii had to take a time out as the “hands team” was not on the field, the regular kickoff unit was out there. I know the Nevada’s chip shot onside kick was perfect and their special teams executed, but anyone hear an explanation on why “hands team” was not initially out there? Isn’t this Special Teams 101 when the trailing team needs to get the ball back and an onside kick is probably coming?

  376. LizKauai m/ October 19, 2010 3:18 pm

Willie- so, could Greg Salas have called for a fair catch on the onside kick?

Grabbed a 6-iron and hit at big Tiger-like draw around everything, landed on the green, two bounces and jarred for an eagle. That sure beat all of the “almost” holes in one I’ve had. Funny game, huh? Oops has a good point about the 12-day window maybe not allowing ESPN to pick up the UH-Utah State game after the Nevada game was over. The thing is, I’d bet that UH and Utah State would waive the window if ESPN really wanted the game. If ESPN was a huge fan of UH they would pick UH instead of Utah State now instead of waiting until after the UH-Utah State game. Even if Utah State wins, they would be 3-4 and UH would be 5-3 with Nevada and Fresno behind them.

ESPNU takes precedence over PPV, so no PPV if ESPNU has the game. If people don’t get that channel, they have to go to a sports bar or a friend’s home. Games on ESPNU are one way that ESPN tries to get people to upgrade to get the channel, so they don’t waive their rights.

  391. Willie October 19, 2010 3:30 pm

Liz, according to newspaper article, the ball was said to have bounced off the turf and because of this a fair catch option did not apply.

Was just wondering about coaches being in the game despite the moment and having the best option available. In this case hands team or not, Nevada just did it. But, does not take away from not being prepared and having to burn a time out. Similar to last year with indecision on whether to go for two or not with time out brain freezes.

    Re: Mack/two-point conversion

He was mad about the item.

The way the game nearly ended, I felt it was a legitimate question.

Thing was, before Mack arrived, everyone in the room was discussing the decision. But during the news conference, nobody would ask the question. I usually don’t like to share my interviews, so I don’t ask questions when the cameras are rolling. But after a while, the conversations were going every which way, I decided: What the heck. I’ll ask.

I didn’t care whether he answered the question or not. But at the end, he said, “next question.” Those are the buzz words he’s coached to say when he doesn’t want to answer a question. That’s when I figured he went into the news conference set on not answering the question.

So while he’s swearing at me this morning, he mentions his thinking behind the decision. I told him he should have said all of that yesterday. That’s when he said: F–k you, Stephen.

Then after a few more outbursts, he pulls me over, we shake hands, and we’re buddy-buddy again.

Still think being a reporter is fun?

I agree with the decision to go for the kick instead of the two points. Just like investing. Some people are gamblers, some are conservative, most are somewhere in between. Going for one or two is a personal decision made by the head coach. No chart or manual from the coaching 101 class can tell him otherwise. Sometimes you just gotta do it by feel.

Although depending on who you are, some will think that the guy who kicked is a gambler, while others will say that the guy who goes for two is the gambler.

Investing is a very personal decision.

Let me modify what i posted earlier:

The dancing around the questions article must have pissed Mack off.

Props to blog host for asking the tough questions. It is clear that the rest of the sports media here does not have the testicular fortitude to ask the tough questions. Liz Chun, Robert Kekaula, Kanoa Leahey, and especially Bobby Curran…Whomever was covering the Nevada game and was a part of the post game presser–no one except ST had the guts. The 2 pt conversion during that time of the game was a legitimate question but nobody had the balls to ask. It speaks what kind of sports coverage we have here.

Props to Mack for growing some. Enough of the folksy, nice man, who is hugs and handshakes all around. Mack was pissed and let the blog host know it. He swore. He got in the reporters face. He said “_UCK YOU STEPHEN!” Sweet. I like mean Mack. Its about time its Mack instead of Mouse swearing. Maybe if Bob Nash had some Mean Mack in him perhaps BB would have won more games and Nash would still have a job.

Again everybody is a winner here. The fans got a reporter who will ask tough questions. No other reporter chose to do so. Thats chicken $hit. And we got a coach that can get in someones face. No more crying or smiles. Don’t _UCK with Mack.

How much you wanna bet Bobby Curran isn’t going to bring it up on the call the coach show and if he does he’ll dance while he asks and down play the entire thing. Mark my words.

And again despite the 2nd guessing our Warriors won as well.

And in the end there was a handshake.

  422. BG October 19, 2010 4:52 pm

I’ve been totally confused by the comments on the on-side kick. Some have said there was a forward spin on the ball which meant that the ball must have struck the field surface first. Does anyone have a link to that report?

I’ve played the kicker’s swing motion over and over again in slow mo. In order to get forward spin on the ball and kick it into the turf to bounce it as high as it did you really have to kick the top end of the ball in a downward motion. Just kicking the top part of the ball gives a forward spin which eventually bounces the ball up in the air, but it goes along the ground first. When the kicker kicked the ball, it went up right away like a golfer hitting a wedge. At no time did the kicker’s foot come far enough off the ground to hit the top of the ball that I could see. The ball was pretty much straight up and down and not slanted forward or back. With the tee, the kicker had to elevate his foot at least 9-10″ to contact the upper end of the ball. Watching the path of his foot, I can’t believe that happened.

Someone please explain how the ball can contact the ground immediately after being kicked and bounce that high in the air with the leg swing that the kicker used. I’ll keep an open mind.

In any case, I liked what another blogger said…when in doubt, everyone call “fair catch” any way. With the ball getting up high in the air right away, how are any of the kicking team going to know if it touched the ground first or not? Tormey’s explanation is an after the fact deal. It was in the same class as Mack’s explanation of the 1 or 2 pt conversion. Just be honest, say it will be handled better in the future, and do just that.

  423. Michigan Warrior October 19, 2010 4:58 pm

Well, ST, glad you asked the question. Sorry that Coach had to erupt like that. But, it should also serve as a reminder that he needs to keep his head in the game too, and not get too carried away by emotion, especially when there’s still ticks left on the clock, and the other team still has a chance at making something happen.

Still waiting for that Jumbo, or Elephant, Package to bust out! Or, as some had renamed it over summer, our Kilauea Package!

We just have to be more successful at short yardage, goal line, and third down conversions.

By the way… Moniz now has 1581 votes! Keep those votes coming in! Good night, gang! See you all bright and early tomorrow!

Ok i guess I will chime in one more time about this one issue haha. But after that for real kine im over it.

What is the difference between 6pts, 7pts, and 8pts?…More importantly for me is what the difference between 6pts (missing the 2pt conversion) and 7pts (making the PAT).

What do we gain from making that 1pt which some say is a “sure thing”

    So on to other things…

Is the altitude in Utah going to be that much of a difference? I think we handled ourselves pretty well in Colorado. I don’t think we will have much problems with it.

Too bad we don’t have a Haleakala or something on Oahu for them to practice at.

BG, glad you brought it up. Everyone is saying the ball hit the ground, but looking at the replays the ball left the T straight up. You’re also so right, when in doubt call a fair catch and freeze the defenders from going for the ball and risk a penalty. But, as they say…pau already! IMUA Warriors.

  436. BG October 19, 2010 5:37 pm

I’m sure others have witnessed it too, but I’ve seen high profile, highly paid coaches lose control of their team and the game by totally screwing up at the finish of an emotional, closely contested game. Name it…SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, etc. So, I’m prone to cut our coaches slack when they make human mistakes. What I’m intolerant of is sweeping the mistakes under the rug. When that’s done, there’s no chance to learn.

I was taught and I tried to pass it on that decision making is highly correlated to the expertise and information brought to bear on it. It could be historical info or statistical info, or from a subject matter expert…whatever. Of course, there’s always room for the “gut feeling”, but you have to make sure it’s coming from the gut and not pulling it out of the backside of it. 😀

I always tell my kids it does not matter ifthey win. The questions are did you give it your best effort? Did you have fun? Did you learn something? What can we work on to make improvement?

Another day filled with a myriad of meetings. Fun, fun fun!

    Nytal!

  440. Wafan,

Actually, at softball I don’t heckle the opposing players. Well, except last year with Morgan Melloh from FSU as she loade the bases with Majam up to bat… I think I screamed “OH MY!!! LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE!!!!”.

Anyway, it’s the opposing coaches and umpires I go after.

But not until the actual spring season. Not much animosity between UH and the fall exhibition opponents. I’m pretty quiet.

  441. Guy in the office October 19, 2010 5:46 pm

Stephen’s never been afraid to ask the tough questions, but in this case, I agree with Kazz (No. 433). If the game ended 27-14, you think “going for 2” would be an issue? I agree with Willie; while watching the telecast, we all wondered why UH needed a timeout to get the “hands” team on the field in that situation. That was more of a gaffe than not going for 2.

  442. Wafan,

Besides, I am NOT in the same league as Fresno State fans that have the nerve to call opposing female athletes _ _ _ _ _ and _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

(Fill in the blanks yourself with your imagination.)

I just wanted us to score on the possession and was elated that we did. I shrugged off my friend’s comments but as soon as Enos kicked the extra point, I realized the situation.

    Guess that’s why I am not a coach…

  459. Matt October 19, 2010 6:43 pm

    BG,

I’m the one that mentioned the spin of the ball. The way I looked at it. There is no way for a ball to spin in the direction that it did if the kicker had kicked it straight up in the air. I looked at it from the standpoint of what would have happened to the ball if the kicker contacted the bottom of the ball and kicked it straight up as some speculated. That flight path seemed easier to predict than an oblong shaped ball on a hard uneven surface. No matter what angle the kicker’s foot came from, the ball would have spun clockwise or have no spin, if it was kicked straight up as high as it was. Instead the ball, spun forward. By process of elimination, it had to have hit the ground.

However, if you would like more evidence, look at these three links:

    http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/64459202.html

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBQkAgvA4xo

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0LFzqcQ-YI

The first is Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby talking about the pop-up onside kick which is what the Nevada kicker did.

The second and third videos are of a kid doing the pop-up kick. Looks pretty similar to what the Nevada kicker did doesn’t it? It may not look like it at first, but if you pause the video just right, you can see the ball bounce off of the ground. You can check out some other videos by searching for pop-up onside kick.

Finally, Dick Tomey specifically emphasized numerous times on air that the kick bounced off the turf and that is why UH could not call a fair catch. He had access to the slow motion replay in much better definition than I did. He may be much older than I am, but I still trust his eyes. He did spot that Kaepernick didn’t make it into the end zone on his fumble (though I spotted it before he did). 😉

  460. Dan-O October 19, 2010 6:45 pm

Having been a head coach at the HS level, I do understand Rolo’s comment about getting “caught up” in the moment. Football is an emotional game…and its easy to lose focus on the sidelines.

Someone on the coaching staff (someone in the booth), should have been yelling in the headsets about going for two. Then someone else should have alerted Mac….as the final decision is his to make.

I think a timeout would have been the logical call…..confer, then decide. But I also think we should let it rest already….Heck, we won the game, point is moot!

  461. chopsueyboy October 19, 2010 6:47 pm

  463. el guapo October 19, 2010 6:49 pm

If you don’t make the 2 point conversion, you’re up by 12, then give up a TD & XP, a TD beats you.

If you’re up by 13, then give up a TD & XP, a TD ties you. There’s still a chance that John Hardy-Tuliau can block the PAT. Or they can have a bad snap, bad placement, or bad kick.

  464. Real Estate Blog October 19, 2010 6:57 pm

Double-digit growth in Yahoo’s display ad revenue helped offset some declines in search revenues as it posted a 113 percent rise in operating income for the third quarter 2010 to $396 million. However revenue increased just 2 percent compared to the same period last year, to $1.6 billion.During a conference call with analysts, CEO Carol Bartz noted the transition of its search operations to Microsoft and Bing remains on schedule, adding that algorithm-based search in the U.S. and Canada transitioned last month with paid search set to follow. But she conceded that over the short term search revenues have been negatively impacted as some advertisers waited to move to Microsoft adCenter.Yahoo’s real strength during the quarter was on the display ad side. The company reported a 17 percent Q3 revenue rise on its owned and operated sites to $465 million – though that was off slightly from the $468 million in display revenue from the second quarter of this year. While the company did report a 4 percent decline in page views – troubling for any portal – Bartz touted the company’s continuing progress to better target and deliver the right audience to its advertisers.

  465. el guapo October 19, 2010 6:57 pm

If you go for 2, you’re telling your defense that you think they’re going to give up 2 TDs in the last five minutes. That’s really showing confidence in your D that has played well all night.

  466. Matt October 19, 2010 7:02 pm

    el guapo,

The chances of succeeding on a 2 point conversion are much greater than JHT blocking a kick or a missed XP. Statistically, the success rate on 2 point conversions is around 40%. If you missed 40% of your XPs, you wouldn’t just be sitting on the bench, you’d be sitting in the stands or on your couch. Heck if you missed 10% of your XPs, you’d be in the unemployment line. Like madeinhawaii, I too posted that Mack should have went for two right after the touchdown on Saturday. In the end we won the game, but could you imagine the backlash if Nevada came back, scored the last touchdown, and we lost by a point? Sorry Mack but you mentioned yourself after your past XP snafus that you follow the 2 point conversion chart. This time, you definitely didn’t.

It’s the attitude not the altitude.

  468. el guapo October 19, 2010 7:14 pm

    Matt,

That’s just how I would play it. If you don’t make the 2 you don’t even have a chance of JHT blocking the kick or a missed XP. To me, going for 2 is something you do when you’re behind. The way the D was playing, I’d go for 2 if up 1 or up 5, or my O-line is totally blowing their D off the ball. I wouldn’t tell my D i don’t think they can stop them twice in 5 minutes. And any coach who goes for 2 based solely on the chart is a fool on my chart.

Longboarder – while you’re throwing around ch*&#en sh@t nicknames, I thought I’d inform you that Kekaula anyway did address the 2-point issue.

Not after the game during the call in show, but Monday on the radio and on his TV show.

He pretty much said it was a non-issue, that going for 2 at that time, made no sense at all.

That charts may have indicated otherwise, but the flow of the game, according to him, called for a simple extra point kick.

I don’t think he’s of the ch*&#en sh@ts…..the other you mentioned, well, I got no arguement brother.

  472. Garret October 19, 2010 7:23 pm

From what I understand, after the coaches had met and had time to discuss things, Rolo gave a radio interview yesterday where he specifically said that they made a mistake and should have gone for 2. Rolo said that the coaches got carried away in the moment and made a mistake.

We’ve seen 1pt/2pt mistakes for 3 seasons now. We’ve seen 3 or so timeouts burned before the extra point attempts, with at least once Mack saying that he was too busy making adjustments to pay attention to decide to go for 2 until it was too late so he had to call a timeout.

The good news is that UH won the game so this issue didn’t go nuclear. I’m putting it behind me after this post and won’t discuss it on the blog anymore. But I hope that the controversy that erupted will insure that this type of delayed or missed extra point decision NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

Someone needs to think ahead on what UH will do when they are on offense…a couple of seconds should be all it takes to figure out what UH will do when they score a TD. Plan ahead so things don’t get lost in the moment. This is actually showing confidence in the offense and maybe will help the special teams to make sure they get the right number of people on the field without burning a timeout.

  473. Garret October 19, 2010 7:26 pm

RGM is on the first team offense for the rest of the season due to the starter getting injured. I hope he makes the most of this shot and earns a space next season.

Not since the beginning of 2009 CFL season, when Grice-Mullen was with the B.C. Lions, had he taken reps with the first-team offence.

“What I bring to the offence is the same thing that I bring to the return game — that speed and that burst,” he said. “When I get the ball in my hands I’m always looking to score. I’m looking up the field for those YAC yards (yards after catch) because I’m not the kind of guy who is satisfied with just getting a catch. I want more.”

    Feature article on Jake Ingram.

“People will ask (what he does for a living),” said Ingram. “I tell them I’m a long snapper. Some of them don’t even what it is. They’re like, ‘What?’ I’ve had people call me a long kicker. I’m like, ‘Read up on it a little, man. Don’t talk to me about football if you’re going to call me a long kicker.’

“I try to avoid it a little bit. Just say I’m out from Hawaii for work. It’s the exact truth.”

    el guapo,

To each his own. With as much time as was left in the game (5:27), I would have gone with the probabilities and went for 2. Then again, I go to Vegas and drop a thousand bucks every once in awhile. If I went with the probabilities there, I would stay home.

    eh no make…

If Kekaula addressed it on his show (the day after on BC and his news segment) then props to him.

But if what ST said was true:

“But during the news conference, nobody would ask the question. I usually don’t like to share my interviews, so I don’t ask questions when the cameras are rolling. But after a while, the conversations were going every which way, I decided: What the heck. I’ll ask.”

So obviously “everybody else” (and I wasn’t in that room) didn’t have the guts to ask. Who else was in the room? Who doesn’t have balls? The way that it was described–Every reporter in that room, during that post game press conference that was whispering, making side talk amongst themselves but didn’t do anything. That is CHICKEN 5HIT!

Are you gonna stand up or just follow the rest? ST said he stood–and at that presser (according to him) he was the only one. Maybe its a cultural thing that here in Hawaii the media is vanilla and doesn’t want to ask the tough questions.

I am definitely not a blog homer and I don’t always agree with what Mack does/says but again props to ST for asking, props to Mack for not putting up with it and speaking his mind, and props to the team for pulling out the win.

  492. kama krab October 19, 2010 8:58 pm

I’m going to try and chime in on the 2-point decision from a coaching stand point even though I am sharing my thoughts as a high school coach and not a college level coach.

I will first say that no matter what kind of charts or forward thinking you do during a game, none of that prepares for the heat of a close game. During games like these you have to factor in the emotion of the game. I coach along a coach that has been a coach for over twenty years and still to this day he has a hard time pulling the trigger on decision likes this. It is not as easy as forward thinking and just saying ok if this happens then this is what we will do. If that happens then this is what we will do and mind you this is only high school level football. We are not coaching for our livelihoods and for most of us we are just volunteering. Decision like going for 2 in a crutial moment is not a decision that can just be made off of paper, it is a decision that is made by feeling and I feel that Mack made a sound decision. Anybody can say it was stupid to go for the point after but until your in the situation you have no idea what kind of emotion and thought process goes into a decision as critical as this. I will say this, if no points where scored, Mack would look even more stupid to you experts then he already does.

Onces again these thoughts are just my experiences as a coach myself but only as a high school coach and not a college coach. The scrutiny is totally different but in the end, coaching is coaching.

It is a time of the game that is hard to explain but when you are a part of it many thoughts go thru your mind and decision making is not as black and white as people would like to think it is. I found that out while coaching this season and I have a greater appreciation for all coaches. Not just high school coaches but also the coaches of the University of Hawaii.

  494. kama krab October 19, 2010 9:03 pm

    I will say this though,

Sending in your regular kick return unit out with 3 minutes left and Nevada down only six was the most boneheaded coaching decision I have ever saw. Everybody and there mother knew Nevada was going to onside kick the ball. That is the only gripe I had all game and that could have really cost us, even more then the decision to go for two after our last touchdown. Calling the timeout just gave Nevada more time to decide what to do and that gave them the time to come out with the kick formation that they came up with. Now that I will say was dump.

    #438 Kapolei Doc:

Anyone see on ESPN TV where Brian Moniz was listed as one of three party crashers for the Heisman?

    I saw it! 😉

  497. HNL October 19, 2010 9:09 pm

Coach Mack said he knows what the chart says, but it is made by mathematicians. They don’t know the flow of the game. He felt that our D was dominating and would stop them, that is why he went for 1. Also he has seen teams go for 2, not make it and lose.

Enough already WE WON, WHY KEEP HARPING ON EVERY LITTLE THING.

  498. cocobean October 19, 2010 9:10 pm

    What if:

UH went for 2 didn’t make it. NV scores TD, UH recovers onside kick on NV 45. 1st play pass to the 27 yard line, NV 1st timeout. UH calls three running plays to the 20yl. NV burns 2 timeouts, clock runs down to 1:30, UH calls time out, kicks FG go up by 8.

UH squib kicks, NV ball on their 39. Scores TD with 10 secs, make 2pt conversion, tie game.

UH loses in double OT. Would there be anyone complaining about going for 2? Or passing on 1st down. Or not passing on 3rd down. Or for squibbing.

This is the only scenario I could think of for not going for 2. Reasoning being kicking the PAT

keeps alive a FG making it a 2 possession game with very little time left.

  499. WarriorMojo October 19, 2010 9:12 pm

Obviously, converting the two point try makes it hardest on Reno and therefore gives your team the best chance to win. BUT, if UH fails to convert the two point try, the score remains 26-14. And at 26-14, guess what? Advantage Reno. At 26-14 Reno doesn’t need to attempt ANY two point PATs. Their first TD and one point PAT makes the score 26-21. Their next TD would make the score 26-27 with Reno AHEAD even BEFORE their PAT try. Heck, even if they missed BOTH PAT kicks, the game is still tied at 26-26 and goes into OT.

So, bottom line, do you prefer if your opponent has to make two PAT kicks to tie the game/one PAT kick and a two point conversion to win, OR do you prefer if your opponent has to make ZERO PAT kicks to tie the game/ONE PAT kick to win?

  500. WarriorMojo October 19, 2010 9:14 pm

Well, I guess posting the second half of my post is better than nothing.

  501. HNL October 19, 2010 9:15 pm

On the radio, BC and RK called it exactly about the onside kick, and i’ve seen it before. They put out the regular kick return team on the field, see how the other team lines up, call a time out, and adjust accordingly. Did Nevada have two kickers the first time?

  502. whitey October 19, 2010 9:17 pm

boy, would have been something else if they went for 2, didn’t make it and score would be 26. Now if it was 26, it would have been a very, very, very long evening on the dark side. Am glad they made the conversion, so came 27 and went home before more the aliens came out to play. hahhahahahhaaaaaa

ST, thanks for explaining what happened and now there is no discussion or speculation.

this is important, but not right now. Do we have a coach responsible for recruiting???? I would assume if we had one, there would have been some recruits visiting during some of our home games. i can understand loyalty to the grayshirts, but i don’t think we have 25 grayshirt for 2011 or do we???

  509. whitey October 19, 2010 9:31 pm

duffer, did the kid win the club championship???? someone said the kid won and beat Dennis. If true, my congrats to the kid.

  510. al October 19, 2010 9:32 pm

didn’t we call the timeout before the kickoff?

i am pretty sure it was us who called the timeout after seeing how nevada lined up. calling a timeout on our part was the correct thing to do. see what nevada was gonna do and line up accordingly.

my concern was that we were vulnerable for the pooch kick. the deep back was somewhere on the 24 yard line and with only two other mid return guys to cover the pooch with everyone else near the line of scrimmage. nevada executed the onside perfectly.

what should have mana silva done?

jump up to field the ball, yes.

or he could have swatted it out of bounds if he couldn’t grab it ala kanani danielson.

the worst case scenario was what he did, wait for the ball to come down. however, that is a coaching point that should have been reiterated to the kick return team during the time out.

fortunately for hawaii and mana silva he made the game saving interception minutes later as if it were an act of God. (or was it?)

mana silve would say after the game that it was and beginning the next day said he would attend church regularly.

  513. kama krab October 19, 2010 9:38 pm

Like I said in my earlier post,

It’s easy to second guess when you have not experienced what these coaches are experiencing but for me I don’t second guess these coaches unless it is something obvious because I know what it feels like to be in a dog fight and trying to make decisions during this time. Like I said before, you could have the bible of possibilites in front of you and that still would not help you decide whether you go for two or not in that situation. It is a feeling that you get that takes into consideration the flow of the game, how the defense is playing, how the offense is playing, how the oline has been dictating the line of scrimmage, and whatever else that pertains to the decision at hand. Tell me you can process all that information in a few seconds and come out with a sound decision. It ain’t going to happen thus making a gut decision and that gut decision by Mack made alot of sense plain and simple.

    Nuff Sed

  515. whitey October 19, 2010 9:45 pm

al, even if we have 10 scholies available, there are some players who should be invited to visit to at least give us a chance at signing them. i know that there are a lot of players available, but am sure there are 2 or 3 that is very high on uh’s list. it could be uh is trying to keep a low profile on their recruits, but sometimes it may help if you can get one to give his verbal. but like i said, it is important, but it can wait till we win the WAC.

  516. kama krab October 19, 2010 9:46 pm

    Al #511,

I understand what you are saying. The only reason why I had a gripe with this certain situation is because we did not already have our hands team on the field ready for an onside kick. If they had there hands team on the field and still thought they needed to make adjustments then by all means call the timeout but to call a timeout without your hands team already out there was a mistake and it gave Nevada more time to scheme what they wanted to do for the kickoff. That was my only gripe. Put out your hands team and things may have happened a little differently and maybe they do not recover the onside kick.

  517. whitey October 19, 2010 9:47 pm

BG…Mahalo for dropping off the cooler..coughing like one choochoo train…

Anyhoo, going for two is not an automatic. You make it, fine you don’t you might give the other guys some “juice”. Some call it momentum shift. Does the “Big Mo” help teams? Don’t know but I do know Warriors won the game and ll the speculation and coaching now ain’t gonna change nothing.

Snap…Clear…Want to know from all the coaches what the game plan is for USU?

    1. What we do on Offense? How we do it?

    2. How do we defend Aggie Offense.?

ie. Mac/Arqanda had a great scheme to pinch the ends and clog the front and ther Pistol when only squirt.

All you great coaches out there put your plan down for the Aggies this week…

  522. BG October 19, 2010 10:09 pm

    Kama

I’m going to disagree with you. All that you said is actually a reason why coaches keep a GUIDELINE in their hand during the game. It’s precisely why the military uses all sorts of mnemonics and key words to aid in making decisions under the heat of the real battle. It’s the reason that the guide is used at all levels of high school, college and NFL football. If there wasn’t a real need, they wouldn’t be in place.

HNL in #498 relates that it is made by math folks (like Jason!)…as if that makes a difference. Mathematicians may have crafted it, but they wouldn’t have if the coaches hadn’t asked for it. So many coaches (including Hawaii) have them because there’s a need. Without a demand, the guides wouldn’t exist. HNL also says “Enough already WE WON, WHY KEEP HARPING ON EVERY LITTLE THING.” Sounds like Coach Mack. I hope he/she remembers that saying when we lose. Fact of the matter is, you should be doing an after action review to learn from mistakes whether you win OR lose. Winning or losing has nothing to do with reviewing what happened and how to fix mistakes. Matt had awesome links to the on-side kick. Tormey really needs to check it out as I would bet money that we’ll see again some time, just like we’ll see more hurry up offenses when we visit high altitude sites. We also need to learn to do that kick ourselves.

  523. BG October 19, 2010 10:50 pm

After all is said and done.. we go back to the saying..

    “This ain’t P.E.”

I accepted Rolo’s explanation.. figured they would be all the more aware of it and let it go. Why it’s snowballed after the fact, I don’t know.

Better we (the coaches and team) move on and focus on Utah.

  525. madeinhawaii October 19, 2010 11:00 pm

If you feel that your Defense is really playing well and can contain the other team. Shoots! go for two. 😉

    madeinhawaii,

i gotta agree with you…we gotta move forward to Utah St.

Marketing better get on the Wagon for Idaho… if (when) our Warriors come back victorious from this road trip, Idaho will be their first opportunity to qualify for a post season bowl game.

  530. koakane™ October 19, 2010 11:11 pm

chiming in on the 2 pt conversion.

most coaches would go for the the two. this would put them in a situation where the opposing team would need two scores to win or at least be tied at the end of regulation play. this gives them another opportunity to play on and win the game.

as for the heat of battle, euphoria, personal decision/preference one can’t judge what another person would do. just gotta live with the decision good or bad. hopefully everything turns out and end well.

  531. NorthShoreFan October 19, 2010 11:16 pm

Sports….never know what will happen before the game starts. Everyone has two legs and two arms..sometimes bigger ones but experience taught me ..it ain’t over till it’s over. Anything can happen. Me thinks Nevada found that out.

Warriors have some things to do this Saturday. USU would love to do to the Warriors what they did to Nevada now. Warriors need to focus and deal with some altitude problems.

However, they will kick some butt this week.

My take on going for 2. If we could score against USC from inside the 3 in 1 down, then maybe. I believe we couldn’t score two different times in spite having more than 1 down inside the 3, which is why some people are asking “what happened to the elephant backfield?” So why take a chance? The probability of a 2point conversion is 40%, but that may be nationwide. I really think UH’s probablity is much less as witnessed in previous games this year. We do have a hard time scoring inside the 5 on 1st and 5 and yet some people wanted to go for it? I agree that you go for 2 only if you are trailing and need 2 points. If the score was 25-14, we’d be up by 11. Then you go for 2 instead of 1 because, it doesn’t matter if up by 11 or 12, if the other team scores 2 touchdowns, it is highly unlikely that they will miss 2 pats and you will probably lose. Or if you just score a touchdown and take a 1 point lead, then going for 2 makes sense, being up by 3 or just 1.

It seems to me that Southlake Carroll High School is even more of a QB factory than Mater Dei or other prominent high schools.

Graduates of Southlake Carroll who are starting QBs in D-IA:

Greg McElroy: Starting QB for Alabama

Kyle Padron: Starting QB for SMU

David Piland: Starting QB for Houston

Riley Dodge: Starting QB for North Texas in previous seasons, moved to WR this season (struggled at QB, especially after his shoulder injury)

If that’s the case, then Mater Dei QB’s can’t be too far behind.

Matt Leinart – Heisman Trophy Winner 2004

    Colt Brennan – Starter Hawaii 2005 – 2007

Mark Sanchez – Starter New York Jets 2009 – 2010

    Matt Barkley – Starter USC 2009 – 2011

    go for two

    go for one

the thing about all this is that we should have thought this out before we even got possession prior to the td. we should have already thought ahead, if we score we’ll be up by 12. do we go for two or go for one. had we prepared and played out the scenario we would have knew exactly what we would be doing.

including if we didn’t get the td do we go for a field goal or go for the first down. then we would have saved a timeout pondering that decision and tsai would miss a pipi break. hypothetically speaking anyway.

“Depending on Wednesday’s evaluations of the top two quarterbacks the Raiders may need to sign another quarterback for insurance.

The likely contender for that spot is Colt Brennan who competed with the aforementioned Boller during training camp.

Brennan, a Hawaii product, recently worked out for the Houston Texans, but nothing came of it.”

I listed 4 QBs currently playing in D-IA football who graduated from the same high school. I just think that it is amazing that one high school is responsible for 4 starting QBs in D-IA football. Mater Dei has 1 graduate starting in D-IA right now from your list, for comparison purposes.

Southlake Carroll has sent QBs to the NFL also, but I’m just looking at things from a recruiting perspective. If 1 high school sends its starting QB to become *freshman starters* at QB at Alabama, SMU, Houston, and North Texas, it might be good to keep an eye out for that school in future years where UH wants to recruit QBs.

  556. Garret October 20, 2010 3:55 am

The Pac-12 is trying to figure out how to split up their TV money and it appears that USC and UCLA will be getting an extra $2 million per year until the Pac-12 reaches a certain payout.

Over the past 2 years, USC got about $23 million from the Pac-10 and Stanford got $14 million. That is a *far* more unequal split of conference revenue than the Big 12 has.

I actually hope that the WAC goes to an unequal split of TV revenue after the dust settles. Let the teams that ESPN wants to show on TV get paid extra for each TV appearance. For UH that would make up for PPV losses and would bring in extra revenue…after BSU, Fresno, and Nevada leaves, UH should be getting a high percentage of ESPN appearances for the WAC.

  560. Michigan Warrior October 20, 2010 4:48 am

Well, I know Piland was Houston’s 3rd string QB, getting the job as the first two got knocked out by injuries. He’s started their last two games, and lost both so far. He’s got 5 TD’s and 4 INT’s so far in his first two games. Still cool to be the starter at age 19, though.

    Padron’s doing a little better.

I think both Padron and Piland face each other this weekend.

Dodge started the year as a WR for North Texas. He has 1 total receptions this year, and that came in their second game of the season against Clemson.

Similar to Piland’s situation, North Texas’ #1 QB went down with an injury. #2 QB Thompson was ineffective, so, Dodge came in to replace Thompson in their game against Army, passing for 63 yards. As a starter in the next two games, Dodge went 1-1. Then, with a fractured wrist, he was replaced by yet another QB!

I think, for a little school up on the hill, Leilehua is doing pretty good too.

  561. Michigan Warrior October 20, 2010 4:56 am

Correction… North Texas’ #2 QB, Thompson, went down with a broken leg… which lead to Dodge coming in. Hate to be a QB on that team!

Here’s a good article in the Fresno Bee about Hawaii:

They haven’t exactly been departing gifts sent with love.

But Hawaii keeps giving teams leaving the Western Athletic Conference a memento to remember.

First, Hawaii thrashed Fresno State for perhaps the last time at Bulldog Stadium. The 49-27 Warriors victory put a damper on the rest of the Bulldogs’ season.

Then, last week, Hawaii upset Nevada 27-21 on the island. That knocked the Wolf Pack out of the national rankings, which only had taken the Pack 48 years to revisit.

Will first-place Hawaii (5-2, 3-0) have a tidal-wave-like present awaiting defending champion and national-title hopeful Boise State (6-0, 2-0) in three weeks?

    My 2 cents:

Mana does not look anything like BJ.

I don’t think going for two would have been a gamble at that point because either way Nevada would have still had to score twice even if UH didn’t make the conversion. I think going for two is a game situation kind of thing. If this was the first half, going for two would have not looked very smart. But with only a few minutes remaining in the game, I think the smarter move would have been to go for two. I don’t know about Mack’s comments about how good the defense was playing. The defense played outstanding in the first half, but the second half wasn’t as impressive. They were playing the bend but don’t break theory in the second half. Nevada got real deep into Hawaii’s end of the field a lot of times in the second half.

I don’t understand why they didn’t have the hands team on the field for the kickoff, but I don’t blame them for that one. I think they should start looking for more “hands” players if they ever do see a two kicker kickoff again. That was unique and the first time I have ever heard of it.

#539 Al…i think Rolovich on the BC show that they had thought about going for two but decided not to. I think it was a mistake and I don’t understand it myself…but my guess is, and this is only a guess…is that Rolo would have gone for two if he was in charge but Coach Mack wanted to kick it in order to keep the momentum going and not take a risk at disturbing the flow.

He’s an emotional guy, and goes with what he feels. Just my less than 2-cents.

#565 rage777(interesting name)…i blame the coaching for not putting the players in a position to receive the onside kick. They looked confused and no one blocked the Nevada players from getting to the ball, which they were free to do as soon as the ball was kicked. I’m not even sure if the coach designated a player to go get the ball (who’s receiving and who’s blocking and whos’s blocking who – that’s what the time out should have been all about after they saw Nevada’s set up).

Our Warriors sort of stood around going “what’s up?”

Not on the players, but on the Special Teams Coach.

A good example of why the Big 10 gets so much more TV money than the Pac-10, and even more than the SEC. From Saturday’s final TV ratings:

South Carolina at Kentucky: 1.518 million viewers

Mississippi at Alabama: 3.143 million viewers

Oregon State at Washington: 2.748 million viewers

Ohio State at Wisconsin: 7.271 million viewers

    UFC 120: 1.935 million viewers

NLCS Game 1 (SF vs. Philly): 7.126 million viewers

The Big 10 game beat the baseball playoffs. It also had more TV viewers than the back-to-back SEC games *combined*. It looks like the 2 SEC games and the Pac-10’s featured game got about the same number of TV viewers together as the Big 10 game.

Garret- The Big-10 holds 25% of all college football viewership. The rest is shared with everyone else.

That’s why when the SEC first envisioned the BCS they knew they had to get the Big-10 on board. Big-10 Commissioner James Delany knew he had the upper hand and cut such a favorable deal for the Big-10.

    Hank,

I understand what you are saying, but I was already disgusted with our special teams coach since the beginning of the year. Nothing the special teams does anymore surprises me anymore. When Nevada had the kickoff return touchdown, I was thinking that’s another one. Maybe they gave those instructions to the hands team on the other side of the ball. I was listening on 1420, so I couldn’t tell what was happening. I like listening to the radio broadcast, but they don’t setup the situations very well. I didn’t know they had two kickers on the field.

#564 Ronnie Good post. Our Warrior team this year: Giant Killers! Two down … one more to go.

In the mean while, got to take care Utah State this Saturday. Focus one game at a time. No take any team cheap. In college, upsets are a fact of life. It boils down to heart and who wants to win most. Our Warriors have heart, miles and miles of heart.

And this year’s team has depth too. I mean … depth, D E P T H! It is deep in most positions. There are guys standing on the sidelines who could come in to play without the team missing a beat like when Gordeon Hanohano spelled Vaughn Meatoga and immediately helped bust a play. I hope more players get a chance to play in the Utah State game. They must be antsy and just raring to go like Stutzmann who did not get to see any action, if at all. He is so much like his brother Craig, reliable, good hands and he gets open to make catches.

GO WARRIORS! ,,,, the GIANT KILLERS!

I generally find personally conflicted when producing a blog publish because I see myself personally writing greater than consumers want to study, but I sense that I should do the topic matter justice by totally covering up it. I sense that by pursuing some of these rules I stop up slicing out very important elements for the discussion. I guess you’ve to discover a balance.

  654. nike dunks women sale November 7, 2010 10:14 pm

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  655. Marcella Body November 7, 2010 11:30 pm

I wish more people would write blogs like this that are really fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is rare to read a blog like this instead.

  660. UGG Knightsbridge Boots November 8, 2010 4:44 pm

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  661. Computer Repair November 8, 2010 6:51 pm

    Hello

  662. UGG Classic Mini Boots November 8, 2010 7:27 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
