Colt auditions with Texans

Former UH quarterback Colt Brennan yesterday worked out for the Houston Texans in what was described as an “exploratory” session, according to his agent, Ryan Tollner.

The Texans do not have an immediate opening on their roster, but wanted to bring in Brennan for a status check in case a spot opened. This was considered a usual NFL procedure, Tollner said.

Brennan was told he impressed the Texans with his skills and health. Brennan underwent four surgeries in his first two NFL seasons, and has been at full strength for several months. He has been training in Arizona weekdays since being released by the Oakland Raiders this past summer.

Nevada has a unique media policy: It does not allow telephone interviews with its players. Because the Wolf Pack does not arrive in Honolulu until Friday that means … wait, wait … its players cannot be interviewed by distant media.

What to do. What to do.

Well, Keani Santos, girlfriend of UH defensive end Elliott Purcell, used to attend Nevada. Turns out Keani  and  some friends used to rent a townhouse in Reno. Polynesian students would use it as a gathering spot. One of the students who used to visit was Nevada running back Vai Taua.

“He used to turn on Chris Brown and Usher, and dance around the house, with the football as a microphone,” Santos said. “It was really funny.”

And, yes, UH allows interviews with out-of-town media. ESPN.com did a phone interview with Bryant Moniz yesterday.

Avis has selected Pomai as winner of the Pack It versus the Pack T-shirt.

We’re giving away another T-shirt today. To enter the drawing, please post: Put me down as a “Yes.”

Avis selects a winner tonight.

And a very happy birthday to Kekoa.

Yes, the NFL needs a dynamic QB like Colt Brennan back in it’s fold. There are a few teams that could use him, AZ Cardinals for one.

  2. BigHiloFan2 October 13, 2010 7:17 am

    gotta be, could it be…

  9. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 7:24 am

The Tshirts sold at RainbowTique are excellent. Hubby says they are good quality shirts and inexpensive at $10 each.

  10. Pomai October 13, 2010 7:26 am

Michigan Warrior it’s easy to vote a hundred times a day or hour in these type polls, all they need is a small program that deletes their cookies (NO KOAMAHU) and automaicly log on to vote again. I’m sure some young college hackers can do this in their sleep. The only way to make this fair would be for people to vote they would have to log in and having a CAPTCHA on the site.

  11. PolyMom October 13, 2010 7:27 am

Can you send it to CALI? LOL! Got so many Hawaii fans and no place to buy a shirt in CALI. UH Make a deal with some store!!!

    Pomai, congrats.

the shirt, is it in Mint condition? perfectly formed?

    uh-oh, watch the officiating 🙁

A potentially tricky game against Hawaii awaits, but a win could go a long way to impressing the AP voters and improving the team’s national perception. Don’t look now, but a win this weekend could even put Nevada in the discussion for BCS-busting status.

    Geev’um, Colt… we all believe!

Have you all voted today for Moniz? Put me down as a “Yes.”

Yeah, Pomai… it was just my sneaky way to let them know that we know there are ways to beat this cheap voting system… and that people are actually watching the votes. Cameron Newton just blew by Jerrod Johnson for the third spot, and those kids aren’t done yet! As long as we can get Moniz onto the next ballot, it’s okay. They start the voting back at zero for round two anyways.

i agree the Vikings could use Colt. But I think the 49ers need him more.. They need a qb who can finish strong in the 4th quarter.

    bb,

Mike Andrews, defensive lineman, the only Hawaii boy on the Pack Roster. Hails from Kailua.

  60. Dennis Halloran October 13, 2010 9:05 am

Colt Brennan and Matt Leinert former Mater Dei Teamates, both striving for QB time in Houston! Is Barkley next?

  61. Michigan Warrior October 13, 2010 9:06 am

Forgot… **David Piland inherited two previous QB’s votes as UofHouston’s rep in this Award process. Terrance Broadway was Houston’s rep two weeks ago, following last week’s bye. Broadway had inherited the votes originally cast for the injured Case Keenum, who had started their first three games.

  62. bb October 13, 2010 9:06 am

As long as we can keep up with this pace of votes for Moniz, we can easily push him into the top 16. Most candidates between #10 through #25 aren’t gaining that many votes per day. So, we have to make our move now to get up there. Like last year, I expect schools to make a push for votes in the last week. We don’t want to be on the bubble when that happens. We want to be fairly secure in our position. Voting for the first round closes 12noon, 24OCT2010, CST.

Example… the guy right above Moniz has gotten 3 total votes since yesterday morning!

Keep it going, people!!! Moniz deserves our support! His story needs to be told!

Okay….Sorry, gang…just to end the confusion. We were planning on having an American themed T-gate…there was some discussion on having it at this weekend’s T-gate. However, before we could really get the word out, people started planning on bringing other stuff. So, this week’s T-Gate will simply be bring whatevas….if you already have American themed stuff bring that…if not, bring something else.

I think we are going to shoot for American themed foods (ie. hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, chicken, steaks, potato salad) for the next T-Gate which will be Idaho.

Again, sorry for all the confusion. 🙁

  102. Slugger October 13, 2010 10:08 am

Congratulations, Pomai! ST said it’s a beeg shirt.

You know, Nevada is going to be wearing light-colored jerseys as the visiting team. Why is UH selling a white t-shirt for the game?

Practice! I got there before ST again.

#79 made a reception when working with the scout team. Graves throwing well.

Interception by Dee Maggitt. Out for a long pass & got it! #5 the Studz-man.

    quote from mack…

Thank you for your email. Our players favor the all black uniforms so that is what they will be wearing. I think it would be great if our fans would like to show their support by wearing black also.

I would love to see: Colt Brennan to Larry Fitzgerald! TD!

  110. Mad Dog October 13, 2010 10:13 am

Put me down as a “Yes.”

Nevada’s pistol reminds me of the triple option. The QB reads the defense and can give the ball to the running back, run/pass, or pitch it to the trailing receiver. If we can stop the run, perhaps we can force the pack to make errors. Kaepernick scares me. He’s big (6-6, 225), fast, and is throwing a lot better this year.

  111. Michigan Warrior October 13, 2010 10:15 am

Question, off topic, about Danno… now, he has a “gimpy” right knee, as Kama Kona calls him. So, first he gets shot in his left arm. He’s healed in the next two shows. Now, he’s using his left arm to hold himself up, and navigates by way of a cane. Only in cartoons do they heal this quickly. It seems like the writers are confused between continuing the story week to week, and just starting fresh week to week.

By the way, McGarret now drives a brand new, blue Chevy Silverado 2500 (Z71). Did they raffle off the other cars? At least Chin Ho still has his bike, and Kono still has her red Chevy Cruze.

Also, compared to previous shows, McGarret seems overly concerned about the girl that got shot in the room. Was it because he had to give her mouth to mouth while she was only wearing a shirt and underwear? Then, why introduce a hot navy girl with whom McGarret obviously has some history?

Okay, waiting for next week. Be there… Aloha!

Thanks for the link to Gerry & the Pacemakers’ “I’ll be There.” I’m not to familiar with it but it’s a nice, easy listening number.

I don’t know how we’ll find a comparable song for today’s catch phrase: Put me down as a “Yes.”

  121. (Jesse) James October 13, 2010 10:30 am

al…I agree…I’ve always favored the black uniforms and fans wearing black shirts since most of the stuff they sell is either dark green or black…..

Why don’t they announce that during sports segments of the news and on shows like Bobby Curran even if it isn’t official….just urge all fans to wear black to the game….more intimidating that way….

  122. Michigan Warrior,

I have another name for them.

  123. Last Call October 13, 2010 10:31 am

Yes,if you really want to get under their skin call them UNR. Ault blew his cork when UNLV handed him the coaching staffs sideline passes and it said “UNR” in large lettering. The UNR staff refused to wear them.

  124. (Jesse) James October 13, 2010 10:32 am

MW #111…. Scott Caan, who plays Danno, actually was really injured while filming and did have a small tear in his ACL. Rather than having him gimp around without explanation…they wrote it into the story line…..LOL

It was/is riveting to watch the rescue of the miners in Chile even if the miners are brought up one after another.

Interesting,as I was leaving to make a beer run I heard the CNN reporter say that the next miner coming up would be greeted by his wife and his mistress.

  146. papajoe2 October 13, 2010 11:13 am

#125 A-House, Its great that the miners got rescued. I couldn’t help but think though, for guys that was stuck in the mine for over 2 months, don’t they look very clean and healthy? I thought that they would look very dirty, covered in mud and skinny for not eating healthy or even eating at all. What about using the bathroom? Strange, but I’m glad they were rescued.

  150. Ok, this was bugging me since the Charleston Southern game, but I was having a hard time remembering if Shawn Ching played for UH under a different last name.

Most people I talked to or asked don’t remember and thought I was crazy, but an old timer in my office confirmed Shawn Ching played as Shawn Alivado.

  151. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 13, 2010 11:26 am

  152. A-House October 13, 2010 11:29 am

    papajoe2:

Ever since the initial “bore” succeeded, the trapped miners were provided food, medicine, toiletries, etc to keep them healthy with high spirits of being rescued.

Believe the rescue yesterday was ahead of timetable. However, it was a great sight to see the first miner exiting the capsule!! So far, 23 out of 33 plus 4 rescue medical personnel.

  153. A-House October 13, 2010 11:31 am

  158. papajoe2 October 13, 2010 11:44 am

#152 A-House, Thanks for the update of the miners. I thought it was strange but your response makes a lot of sense. Actually, common sense. Sorry, while I was happy, I was just expecting dirty, skinny miners. Good that everything is OK with them. I wish all the best!

That’s why plenty people want to come to the United States. Maybe, at times we just take things for granted and forget how fortunate we really are…….. Referring to a discussion from yesterday’s blog, it should be pointed out that the WAC was *not* sure that BYU was going to be joining the WAC if all the teams stayed. If you read the e-mails between Benson and Utah State, Benson optimistically said that their chances to get BYU was 90%. However, later on Benson said that BYU was *not* getting the type of TV money from ESPN that they thought they would get (which also meant that the WAC would probably get significantly less than those optimistic projections people were talking about).

So, Benson was telling WAC Presidents that he was NOT sure that BYU would be joining them even if none of the WAC schools left. At the same time, the WCC was actively negotiating with BYU, even talking in public about how they wanted to add BYU’s non-football teams. BYU had the offer from the WAC for quite a bit of time after the WAC members agreed to the loyalty pledge and they *still* had not said they were going to join the WAC.

I’ve also read that the WAC wanted a long-term commitment from BYU (wasn’t the agreement for 5 years?) while the WCC only asked for a *1-year* commitment from BYU. So, if they are invited to join the Big 12 in the future, BYU can easily leave the WCC without breaking a contract while they would have to break their word if they left the WAC. We should not overlook that point.

It sounds to me that the WAC wanted a long-term commitment from BYU and the WCC made them a more attractive offer. BYU gets to play the WAC in football (the agreement limited to 2 years) and can leave the WCC anytime they wish for another conference.

  179. Garret October 13, 2010 12:20 pm

If Mack wants a Black Out, I don’t understand UH selling white t-shirts for the game. Didn’t the Athletic Department earlier say they wanted all football games this season to be Green Outs?

It sure doesn’t appear that UH is coordinating its colors well for this game. UH needs to make an announcement soon and look into how to plan these things in advance next time so they sell the right color t-shirts!

  180. CHEE! October 13, 2010 12:24 pm

Again…I hope the news media (C’mon Kanoa, Robert, Mike, Bobby C.) and the ‘Tizer start telling everyone to wear black at the game. UH should really be promoting this too. I still find it odd that a majority of the stuff sold at the Rainbowtique is in black anyway…why not just use that color and go with it…..

    Just joking!!!

  199. al October 13, 2010 1:06 pm

anyway, how many pack it shirts will be sold? 100-200 if they are lucky. they’ll end up in a box like the usc tshirts. why because some no clue persons who are designing the stuff are not doing a good job.

first, they use white tshirts, well it cost less than green or black.

second, those designs and slogans are lame. “pack it vs the pack” how corny can you get?

    pistol whip the pack…cool

    whack the pack!

they should hire a real expert at graphic design like ajoe

I don’t know about the older generation but I wish more UH shirts had designs like those used by MMA apparel makers. It would also be fashionable to mimic Quicksilver, Roxy, Hurley, Vans, T&C, HIC, Local Motion, Reef, O’Neill, DaKine, Billabong, RVCA, Volcom, and on and on.

I’d buy a few for my Grandparents! They’d be stylin’!

    A very generic question:

How much politics and “old boy network” goes on at UH? Why? Are egos that huge?

Hope someday, some one who has rises to a very high position has the alas to say, “enough of this bull-shit”; go out and do your job or you’re gone!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, the “union(s)” will be the first to step in and file a complaint and the whole “legal” process starts and may never end.

I wish I had $54 billion so I could buy out UH from the State of Hawaii and create a private institution, give each administrator/manager/supervisor type 20 days to submit a brief why they should be retained and what their work philosophy is to make education better. If I no like, they are headed out the door.

the only thing about the green is that there are so many shades of green out there. the rainbowtique themselves sell several shades of green and the fans all wear different shades of green.

whereas, black is more of a one color color. black is black. i guess i am partial to the blackout.

but the thing is, we have never come close to an all green or all white look. for example, my neighbor going where his purple and yellow shirts no matter what the theme is.

  225. NCAA October 13, 2010 1:34 pm

    Mr. A-House,

What is the old boy network you are referring to at UH? Are you talking about the Regents? Chancellor? President? Athletic department? Democrats? Republicans?

  226. RE: Fans to wear black on Saturday.

Reading Al’s email and judging by the lack of press on the subject, it’s apparent that this is what Coach Mack simply suggested and is NOT an official request from UHAD.

I remember e-mailing John McNamara last season regarding what colors fans should wear against Wisconsin and his reply was that there was no real “white out” or “green out” or “black out” for this game, but did mention it would be nice to see UH fans in the stadium wearing green.

I personally liked the “Green and White Rule the Night” thing last season where half the fans were asked to wear white and the other half green and I WAS SHOCKED TO GO TO THE GAME AND IT WORKED!!! Just how in the hell did they pull that off without bribing Hawaii people with a free trip to Vegas is beyond me!!!!!!!!!! 😆

To me, Coach Mack did several things right when it came to the team’s appearance:

-He got “HAWAII” back on the front of the uniforms.

-He got one of our OFFICIAL school colors in back into it more with the green shoulders and on the away uniforms.

-He got a sponsor in Under Armour that has done WAAAYYYY more for UH football monetary-wise and apparel-wise than Nike ever did.

-He got the marching band involved with the team’s entrance.

I’m 27 and I wasn’t appreciative enough of UH when Bob Wagner was here and the green and white and “Hawaii Five O”. When I DID get back into the flow of things around 2002. I was confused…

There is a lot of talk about UH’s traditions and a lot of comparisons with other BIG SCHOOLS but how many more things can get butchered or changed to the point of suffering a loss of identity? Change this, change that, and I even heard people suggest playing AC/DC’s “Back In Black” as the team runs out on the field instead of Hawaii Five O… What the hell does AC/DC have to do with Hawaii???

Black has as much to do with UH as SILVER did… NOTHING!!! 🙄

Black looks cool and all, but I hope we eventually pack them away as alternative special uniforms and go back to our green tops and white bottoms for home and continue with all whites with green trim for the road.

  227. NCAA,

The “OLD BOY” network is most prevalent at the TOP and sometimes more watered down as you get to department heads or administrators.

UHAD has obstacles to leap over to get things done and people target or specify those in the athletic department for problems, but it’s all a system. You can get rid of personel in the department, but that doesn’t really fix the REAL problem.

The real problems are always at the VERY TOP.

  228. al October 13, 2010 1:40 pm

  233. NCAA October 13, 2010 1:46 pm

    Kazz,

I don’t see how the old boy network would be prevalent at UH since some at the top are from the mainland and do not have the local roots to the traditional Hawaii “old boy network”. If you mean the bureaucracy that plagues UH then I see what you mean.

  238. al October 13, 2010 1:52 pm

    meanwhile…focusing on the game.

to me, it is imperative to slow down the pistol enough so that it fires some blanks every now and then. i beleive we should focus on stopping vai taua and maintain containment of kapernick. they both gonna get their yards but if we can slow em down and prevent the long ones we should be all right.

on offense, we gotta do what we do best which is move the ball up and down the field. i like how we are going to the run more often and this is a must as it will keep pass rushers like moch from teeing off on every play. we gotta hit em before he can run 4.2/40.

special teams…well, they need to start becoming special. much improved last week which to me is one of the reasons we kicked butt. i’d be preaching to the st units to eliminate any penalties (including the coaches).

i like our chances, i believe we are better than most folks think we are.

    …nuff said.

  239. al October 13, 2010 2:00 pm

    tommui…was he officer bernard ching?

  240. NCAA,

Well, to me “old boy” can mean a lot of things and the term “old boy network” is also used on the mainland too.

Essentially, the bureaucracy is what I was referring to.

  241. Pomai October 13, 2010 2:08 pm

Watching the Marshall game on ESPN, their school color is white, check out the stands??? I agree with Pride we should all wear green, but like al pointed out too shades, so maybe UH should make an sell game shirts and I know that the guidelines put out by UH says that all vendors should use only the shade of green that matches theirs. Quote from the “External Affairs Manual” 1. Garment/Product Colors: The official green is PMS 3435. The other

colors are white, black and PMS cool gray 4 or PMS 677. Fabric for team

    apparel should match PMS 3435.

  243. A-House October 13, 2010 2:09 pm

    NCAA:

You can pick any definition you want, but the fact remains that even if you are an outsider, if the “ole boy” network is strong, you will not accomplish many things as they will find a way to become an obstacle.

It is an attitude and attitudes are very difficlut to break – just ask any proud “southerner” who is still fighting the Civil War.

I watched some of the NMSU v NM game last night on ESPN3 replay and then the first half of the Nevada v SJSU replay.

Both NMSU and NM are pretty poor. Manley really injected some life but after driving them down to inside the 5 they did not trust him to pass or even call his own number and they ended up having to settle for a FG, which of course ended up winning the game. It must have been extremely hard for Walker to burn Manley’s redshirt year during the last five minutes of the 5th game of their season. By the time they play Hawaii for their last game of the season they may have some things figured out. Now that Manley is in the mix it would be strange if he was not the started by the end of the season. The other QBs were completely ineffective (their only TD was on special teams).

SJSU did not look too bad in the first half really. It is amazing that they lost to Davis. Nevada had one series that almost put Ault over the edge. They had three different scoring plays, a long pass (on the 2nd play of the drive), a run by Kap, and another pass all negated due to penalties. They ended up having to attempt a fairly short field goal that they missed. I can’t recall ever having seen something like that.

At times the Nevada offense looked unstoppable and at other times they did not look very good against a very young defense. Defensively Nevada allowed SJSU to move the ball.

From the way they cover the sport I’m convinced that it’s owned by a Fresno State fan. They banned me last year guess I got on their nerves.

All this talk about what color to wear brings me back to Brian Bosworth who, while in the NFL (Seattle, I think), said that he was going to “kill” John Elway during the game, right before the teams met. The Bronco fans bought the white shirt with a red circle around the “BOZ” with the line through it. Just about Denver’s whole stadium was full with the fans wearing that shirt. Guess who’s company manufactured and sold the shirt? You guessed it, Brian Bosworth.

  258. Last Call,

For sure it is run by a Fresno State fan. It’s deceiving that a FSU softball fan is passing it off as a WAC Softball blog. I think his name is James or Jesse or something with a J.

Did you read their posts when the Wahine took on FSU in regular season WAC play??? I think that person was actually down here because he called cited that a lot of the Wahine’s home runs would have been doubles in “real ball parks”. 🙄

I used to post there then they stopped approving my stuff around the WCWS. I guess our WAC dominance bothered them.

There can be good information though, such as the tournament coverage and whatnot.

But yeah… in two years expect that site to get shut down or renamed the MWC Softball Blogspot.

WAC Softball has a Twitter site too and it’s run by the same guy.

  270. Derek October 13, 2010 3:53 pm

Put me down as a “YES”.

O.K. Time for this week’s prognostication. Both teams are nationally ranked in total offense. Hawaii, being at home, gives us at least 3 or more points. Plus, Nevada has never won at Aloha Stadium, probably because Hawaii’s team was better, but now Nevada is ranked higher. Basically, I see this game as a toss-up. Nevada will score. A reasonable person would say that Kaepernick will score twice on runs, Taua score twice, Kaepernick pass for 2 scores, and Nevada will kick 1, maybe 2 field goals. That’s about their scoring average, which is around 45 to 48. Hawaii will score also. Moniz will likely pass for 4 to 6 touchdowns, Green will score at least once rushing, and maybe Chizzy will score once.

Enos is good for 1 or 2 field goals. So, the difference will likely be decided

on who makes the most mistakes, and special teams. I might be a kick return, an interception, a fumble, a blocked punt or blocked extra point, maybe even a safety. Who knows. When all said and done, I like the home team because first of all, I feel like the defense has gotten better since the Colorado game and the team has been able to get some turnovers. I like our offensive line so far, plus Moniz seems to be getting better with every game. Our receivers will make some big plays. And, we have been much better in the red zone this year. Finally, it’s revenge and payback from last year at Reno. That’s always motivatiion. Easily, there will be over 1,000 yards of offense in this game, and more than 100 points. The Score:

    Pomai,

    Hawaii – 59

    Nevada – 48

LOCATION AT SITE 5. PASSWORD REMAINS THE SAME.

  272. Guys,

We have a pretty good offensive line don’t we? 😎

  274. TYaiea October 13, 2010 4:15 pm

re Shawn, yes Tom mui is correct. His mother, Elaine, was married to Rudy Alivado, both with HPD. After the divorce, Elaine married Bernard Ching, also HPD. They’re all good people, Bernie, Elaine and Rudy. The Ching’s had a son, you remember Kevin Ching, he was highly recruited by everybody and chose Notre Dame. Yes Shawn changed his name to Ching during his Junior or Senior year, to honor of Bernie who raised him. IMUA NA KOA. WAC THE PACK2!!

  275. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:17 pm

I wonder if that Nevada player who was caught shoplifting in Waikiki is still on the team.

  276. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:20 pm

    Tyaiea,

that must mean Bernard adopted Shawn in high school, hence the name change. He also had to get Rudy to agree to it.

My daughter went through the same process when my husband adopted her when she was still an infant.

  277. bb October 13, 2010 4:22 pm

i thought it was Jason Ching that played for Notre Dame….

  278. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:24 pm

well, she was not an infant. she was 2 yrs old.

  279. TYaiea October 13, 2010 4:25 pm

Gigi I don’t believe he was adopted, don’t know for sure, but the Chings were married when Shawn was still very young.

  280. TYaiea October 13, 2010 4:28 pm

#277, sorry yeah Jason, and they’re, Shawn and Jason, very good looking guys, yeah.

  281. Gigi,

No way is he still on the team. Nevada ain’t Florida.

That player that shoplifted got kicked off Nevada.

  282. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:28 pm

So, what is Shawn’s racial ancestry? Just curious.

  283. TYaiea October 13, 2010 4:31 pm

Gigi, Elaine is all haole and Rudy I believe Korean (or Japanese) Filipino. The hapa haole gives them that good looks.

  284. RupertDaStupert October 13, 2010 4:33 pm

Hawaii Five-O for the first time since the premiere on Sept 20, lost the ratings war on Oct 11 to some other show on ABC. But Five-O is the most DVR’d show in the history of television and that bolds well. The new Danno is different from the first Danno. The first Danno was like a puppy dog following McGarrett around. The new Danno has a mind of his own and is not afraid to argue with Steve. Grace Park is woo woo in a bikini but she shouldn’t just be candy. She has shown to be a talented actress to be given expanded character exposure. And McGarrett needs a nemesis like Wo Fat bothered Jack Lord. Bring James Marster back (Killed Steve’s father in episode 1). The Warriors have put the package together and nothing can stop them now except themselves. I am very impressed with Bryant Moniz. And Greg Salas is phenomenal! And the rest of his team mates are not too far behind. Win or lose, I will love them. They are unbelievable! Book em McMacko.

  285. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:36 pm

    Rupert,

5-0 won that time slot again, after the later poll was completed.

Put me down as a “Yes.”

For an actual decision on the real color to wear to EVERY Warrior game. Dang. So much indecision and absolutely no marketing.

Well, unless you consider a coach thinking it would be okay to wear a particular color.

  289. wafan October 13, 2010 4:42 pm

PMS 3435 is a really nice dark forest green. Why the discrepancies in color from the supposed supplier of Warrior apparel?

  290. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:45 pm

sometimes, it’s hard to distinguish between dark green and black. and it’s hard to find green shirts. so for marketing purposes, UH should go with black for every home game.

  291. 49erWarrior October 13, 2010 4:48 pm

  292. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:50 pm

    hey, ST,

does the S-A reimburse you when you mail out these prizes? that would be the fair thing to do.

  293. wafan October 13, 2010 4:50 pm

By the way, PMS is the acronym for Pantone Color System.

Back in the dark ages there was no real way to ensure the exact same color was produced on various press runs (printed products). Lots of different color matching systems were used; but, the most popular was the Pantone Matching System. Every color has a corresponding PMS number so no matter where you get something printed or dyed the color (PMS number), if specified, must match. I have had customers try to reject printing products because they thought the colors were not accurate.

A reputable and reliable graphic designer should specify the PMS colors to be used.

Well, I guess that explains the color confusion from the UH.

  294. Wafan,

It’s the maker. Official UH merchandise comes from many other companies like Kulanui, Addidas, or other generic brands.

Under Armour only makes green as PMS 3435. All Under Armour clothing from hoodies, to shirts, to pants, and hats feature PMS 3435 green.

There are various shirts at the Rainbowtique that are not made by Under Armour. Clothes that feature various designs around the H logo and use green are not the true PMS 3435. Also shirts for the other sports are not sponsored by UA so they use other green tones other than PMS 3435. Like Wahine volleyball is sponsored by Asics, but their merchandise are Kulanui shirts I think.

The contrast has been slowly becoming more uniform since 2008.

Trust me, I check out merchandise a lot and I can tell you the difference isn’t as bad as it seems. It’s getting better.

  295. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 4:51 pm

    wafan,

that’s good to know. how come you’re so smart?

  296. wafan October 13, 2010 4:52 pm

    Oops.

    PMS = Pantone Matching System.

    HA!

  297. Michigan Warrior October 13, 2010 4:52 pm

Speaking of colors… When I was growing up, all I remember was wearing green, even though it was a bright (almost shiny) green. I even had white “Rainbows” shirts and tank tops, but for every UH game we attended, no matter what sport or gender, my grandfather, dad, uncles, and cousins ALWAYS wore green. We were expected to wear green to show the other team the “degree of our support”, as my grandfather used to say.

Once Coach Jones came in, and we dropped the “Rainbow” from the football team with our new image, everyone, from the media to our next door neighbors, bought into the new look, new attitude Warriors. The first time that black “special ocassions only” uniform was introduced, we all drooled over it. That was maxed out, Darth Vader macho. I bought my first black UH t-shirt.

As stated previously, I am extremely superstitious, especially when it comes to UH and big games. I always wear my black UH shirts and hats during the week leading up to the game.

That being said, since I have had to settle for watching UH games from far away for so many years, one thing that really looks impressive is when the camera pans over the stadium, and all we see is that lush green… like a reminder of Manoa Valley itself.

No matter what our team wears, home or away, wearing green in person at these events really identifies our fans, and that’s how it should be. Me? If at a game in person, I’ll be in green. Otherwise, if I’m at home, I’ll be in either green or black.

    Just my two pennies…

  298. wafan October 13, 2010 4:53 pm

    GG . . .

Not smart. Just lots of tidbits of information.

Besides it is the field in which I was employed and currently teach.

  299. RupertDaStupert October 13, 2010 4:54 pm

Thank you for correcting me Gigi. I am impressed with Alex O’loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park. Alex O’loughlin Auditioned for the new James Bond in 2005. He is going to be a big screen superstar. So will Scott Caan. He is real good actor like his dad James. Just like the Warrior football team, they’ve got good chemistry. This new Five-O helps our state economy and gives employment to our local people. I am soooo happy! Just as I am soooo happy for the success of our Warriors. I will love them and be proud of them no matter what the outcome will be for the remainder of the season! General Robert E. Lee said “We cannot have a war without a band”. Five-O has a great band music and the UH Warriors have a great marching band. We will win the battles because we got the BAND!!!! We cannot lose!

  300. But looks like UA is perhaps making more fan apparel for other sports they sponsor at UH. Last season they made a UH baseball shirt as the baseball team is partially outfitted by UA (cleats and undershirts) and right after their season ended, UA made a women’s shirt for Wahine softball as they are completely sponsored by UA like football.

When the spring comes along, I wouldn’t be surprised if baseball and softball have more UA merchandise released for fans.

BTW, both baseball and softball shirts were black.

  301. Interesting thing I realized about the new Hawaii Five O is that the executive producers wrote the screenplay for both Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay.

  302. wafan October 13, 2010 4:58 pm

    Remember this?

“In GREEN Manōa valley our Alma Mater stands, . . .”

For heaven’s sake, it is not difficult to order a PMS specific shirt.

  303. Markazulu October 13, 2010 4:59 pm

    Intresting read: from collegefootballnews.com

Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz will be the best player in the WAC, and won’t get first or second-team all-conference honors.

It’ll be a coin-flip between Boise State’s Kellen Moore and Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick for the First Team All-WAC quarterback slot, and Moore will win it and will end up being in New York as a Heisman finalist. But it’ll be Moniz, the Hawaii junior quarterback, who’ll do more for his team and will be the best player in the conference. He’ll finish the year in the top three nationally in total offense, and with over 300 passing yards per game against everyone but USC (and that was only because he was knocked out for a stretch), and with 18 touchdowns so far and just four interceptions, he’s one of the nation’s hottest passers and will keep being a major playmaker for an attack that keeps on putting up numbers like the June Jones days.

  304. wafan October 13, 2010 4:59 pm

I like the new 5-0 intro. Lots of throwback stuff in there. Well, and the song is pretty cool, too.

  305. Pomai October 13, 2010 5:01 pm

All vendors who make apparel for UH are required to use PMS -3435, but it would be very hard to enforce this with all of the various vendors all over the world.

  306. Shoko October 13, 2010 5:02 pm

    Gigi #275,

From what I heard, that Wolf Pack player who got caught stealing at the Duty Free Galleria in Waikiki was kicked of the team. He pled guilty and the sentence was defered. Think he went back home to Seattle and not sure if he is playing for another team. The other player that was arrested along with him, Duke Williams, is still on the team as he wasn’t charged. He plays strong safety (I think). However, Williams, according to a friend has been involved in another indicident and wa suspended a couple games this season. As it is now, he’s walking on thin ice. If he wasn’t a starter, he would probably be gone.

  307. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 5:03 pm

Question is, will Moniz make it to the NFL. At 6 feet, he’s kinda short, don’t you think?

  308. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 5:04 pm

    good to know, Shoko. Thanks.

  309. Wafan,

That’s why their inventory is SLOWLY starting to match despite the manufacturers. I doubt UH’s Auxiliary Services department was about to just dump all the previous shirts out all at once.

  310. Slugger October 13, 2010 5:10 pm

  316. Shoko October 13, 2010 5:22 pm

Regarding some players that get into trouble. Playing college ball is a priviledge. Not to mention a college education. You screw up, you not only let your felloe players down, but also the fans. I have zero tolernace when there are infractions of the field. However, if you’re a starter, I will consider the mitigating cirmcumstances surrounding the incident. 😉

  319. Oh and before this gets SPUN out of context…

    1) I’m making fun of Nevada because I don’t like them, don’t respect them, etc…

    2) I’m pointing out how someone like Urban Meyer doesn’t get questioned about over a dozen players under his watch get arrested.

(Trying to have some fun at the expense of two programs I don’t respect).

Let’s not turn this thing into a thing about throwing stones at a glass house or something..

  320. Shoko,

    Or…

  329. chopsueyboy October 13, 2010 6:05 pm

    KAZZ

University of Georgia must be high in the rankings for players arrested.

They have 11 arrested since March of this year.

    http://www.realestateradiousa.com/2010/10/11/another-georgia-football-player-arrested/

  330. Chopsueyboy,

Interesting to see how many coaches were arrested while active with their programs.

Last I can remember ole crazy Joe Pa had some kind of incident on campus at Penn State involving his car and two students in their car.

  331. Speaking of cars… Chris Ault looks like the type to have road rage.

  332. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 6:17 pm

Road rage. Tell me about it. If it’s anything I can’t stand it’s guys who give me the finger for driving the speed limit.

  333. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 6:19 pm

Drew Brees, 6 footer, in the NFL, Super Bowl champ. But, isn’t he the exception, though? Still short.

Well, I hope Moniz gets drafted AFTER graduation… Good luck!

  334. Shoko October 13, 2010 6:21 pm

When Nevada had three TDs called back-to-back-to-back due to penalties against SJSU and then watch Ault go up to the the officials yelling while his head was tilted up was comical. The guy is a shorty. Guess thats why they call him the Little General. 😆

  335. Shoko,

    Short people have HUGE tempers.

    I should know.

  336. Shoko October 13, 2010 6:25 pm

    CSB #329,

Not surprising about that statistic, considering UGA AD, Damon Evans, was arrested for DUI and eventually resigned due to the publcity. Not exactly leading by example. No?

  337. Shoko October 13, 2010 6:26 pm

    Kazz,

People that are short may have big tempers, but they usually have big hearts. And thats a good thing. 😉

  338. gigi-hawaii October 13, 2010 6:28 pm

  339. Damon Evans, John Welty, and Milton Glick should all get together to host a seminar on ethics.

UH beat FSU this past Saturday and their QB, Ryan Colburn, is at #18 with 1081 (was 1523/1520) votes, so yep, we need a w-h-o-l-e lot more votes.

UHfan808 #357 – Finally figured out what happened. My registration on Oct 10 went through but the confirmation went to my Spam box so I never verified. After that they kept rejecting my attempts to register.

    Wasted 3 days of voting.

Moniz at #23. Needs about 300 to move to #21, right behind Kaepernick.

  365. UHfan808 October 13, 2010 8:52 pm

    @365 oldie – uh oh, it’s the spam box attack = (.

keep that confirmation email, found i could only log on by clicking on the link they sent, that is, until today when i finally logged on without it. we shall see…

it’s okay, no hu hu, at least you can vote every day now!

    Pomai,

I find your request completely unfair to the rest of the defensive players who want equal time to do the same.

  369. Steve October 13, 2010 9:16 pm

    Pomai,

That request should be going out to Aaron Brown, who is fast and quick enough to plant Kaepernick that many times.

I think we need to stick with 2 colors period…Don’t we have a mix of like black, dark green, white, silver, lighter green etc that the team uses?

At least thats what I remember from the jersey/helmet combos and the e noa toa e thing that JJ did.

I guess our official colors are still green and white?

  379. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 13, 2010 10:55 pm

    UH

  380. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 13, 2010 10:58 pm

Black isn’t the most comfortable color to wear for half the stadium who has sun for an hour+ and for those tailgating.

I just don’t think people will want to wear that color during the heat of the day for every game.

I usually just wear green shirts that under armor made for UH.

After a quick meeting with Coach Bulla and his lovely roomie, it was a short chat with Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona. Once I let him know what I expected from the next Gov. He let me go to dinner with Diana.

Solid blog. I got a lot of good data. I?ve been keeping an eye on this technology for awhile. It?s interesting how it keeps varying, yet some of the core components remain the same. Have you seen much change since Google made their latest acquisition in the field?

just voted for Moniz, up to 617 votes but still a long way off from the guy above him.

  394. EH NO MAKE! October 14, 2010 1:20 am

Nevada head coach Chris Ault comes across as such a DWEEB, I have all kinds of dis-like for him.

God i hope the Warriors CRUSH the Wolfpack Saturday.

Collin Kaepernick though, is indeed a “freak” of nature, such a stud, and that big runningback Vai Taua is a beast, but, so is Bryant Moniz, Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares and Corey Paredes.

Is is me, or has Rodney Bradley not come close to the form he had in 2009…?

  395. SteveM October 14, 2010 1:43 am

Got some nice country style pork ribs today and will proceed with experiment #2 using the flavorful Mexican/Southwestern poultry rub. Will oven roast Saturday morning, and if successful, will bring it to the tailgate at approximately 1:30 PM. If not successful… ahhhh, maybe some form of chicken instead 😐

Note: this is not Shannon’s “Broke da Mowt” recipe. I’ll prepare that for the next tailgate, being much more confident now that mom (the retired institutional cook and manager) said that Shannon’s recipe is not unusual at all–it was a secret among pro chefs. LOL. So when was she ever going to tell me… 😕

Cool — mbb will do the haka. I hope they do it a center court on the H.

Will the coaches join the team?

Surely the crowd will go nuts in appreciation. Maybe even put the words up on the screen for the crowd to join in? That would be awesome!

    Note to Kazz:

Verizon selling the iPad in 2 weeks is the latest sign that the iPhone is coming soon to Verizon:

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/ipad.jsp

  415. Garret October 14, 2010 5:25 am

Verizon is actively boosting its network capabilities to enable it to be ready to handle increased mobile data traffic. They say they are doing this (and upgrading their system to enable simultaneous data and voice smartphone usage) whether or not they get the iPhone…but the timing this (completing their upgrades right before they are rumored to get the iPhone) is a tipoff to me:

    Great Morning All!

Still in the PNW; heading back down to OR this morning. So excited about the 4 hour drive…NOT!

    chopsueyboy,

Spent last night at the Watertown Hotel near UDub campus. You are right! Very nice hotel. If next years Warriors’ game were being played at Huskies Stadium it would the perfect Tsaiko HQ! Even still, a good possibility as driving to Qwest Field is fairly reasonable. Great complimentary breakfast and loved those (midori7, you reading this?) freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in the lobby in the afternoon.

  417. HNL October 14, 2010 5:52 am

Just voted for Moniz again #629, he is at #23 now.

The verizon i-phone will not be on LTE yet, so they say.

  418. HNL October 14, 2010 5:54 am

They want to wait till the network is up and running and solid befor they come out with 4g

  419. Garret October 14, 2010 6:19 am

    HNL,

Apple apparently isn’t planning an LTE iPhone until mid-2012. January they are expected to get the CDMA iPhone for Verizon, and then mid-2011 (when they normally release their next version of the iPhone each year) their next iPhone will be a dual-mode phone than can do 3G for both AT&T and Verizon.

Doing all the CDMA stuff and trying to get 1 phone that will work for both networks by the middle of next year will keep Apple busy enough. Trouble is, there will be a bunch of LTE smartphones available before the iPhone gets LTE.

  420. PolyMom October 14, 2010 6:22 am

  421. PolyMom October 14, 2010 6:22 am

    Sorry about the double post.

  422. HNL October 14, 2010 6:24 am

I heard that they bought a lot of CDMA chips, but I did not know that they were going to make it a dual mode phone.

  423. chopsueyboy October 14, 2010 6:40 am

    Voted for Bryant Moniz

    He now has 637 votes

  424. chopsueyboy October 14, 2010 6:40 am

why isn’t our media getting behind getting more votes for Moniz?

  425. chopsueyboy October 14, 2010 6:55 am

    d1

Glad to hear you had a good experience at Watertown.

In the afternoon, you can smell the aroma of cookies baking

and when it’s finally ready, GO FOR BROKE!

We’re booked for next years game at Huskie Stadium.

Walking distance to lots of restaurants,

not the greatest places to eat, but fills the tummy

    at a reasonable price

  426. Garret October 14, 2010 6:55 am

    HNL,

Article about how Apple will *not* be making an LTE phone for 2011–this is the same writer who broke the news about the January Verizon iPhone that the Wall Street Journal confirmed 2 months later. Apple is apparently releasing their CDMA iPhone for Verizon in January and when they release their next iPhone in mid-2011 it will have support for both Verizon’s and AT&T’s 3G networks but won’t support 4g:

Convertible pants are also good for places with hotter climates or with climates that tend to change from different extremes within the day, like in tropical climates. A person could start out the colder portion of their day wearing their pants, and when the day becomes hotter, they can convert it to a pair of shorts at a moment’s notice without having to bring around an extra pair of pants with them wherever they go. As the day reaches an end and night begins to sink in along with the dropping temperatures, one could easily slip on their pants legs and keep a comfortable temperature, again without having to bring around an extra pair of pants with them. Double-digit growth in Yahoo’s display ad revenue helped offset some declines in search revenues as it posted a 113 percent rise in operating income for the third quarter 2010 to $396 million. However revenue increased just 2 percent compared to the same period last year, to $1.6 billion.During a conference call with analysts, CEO Carol Bartz noted the transition of its search operations to Microsoft and Bing remains on schedule, adding that algorithm-based search in the U.S. and Canada transitioned last month with paid search set to follow. But she conceded that over the short term search revenues have been negatively impacted as some advertisers waited to move to Microsoft adCenter.Yahoo’s real strength during the quarter was on the display ad side. The company reported a 17 percent Q3 revenue rise on its owned and operated sites to $465 million – though that was off slightly from the $468 million in display revenue from the second quarter of this year. While the company did report a 4 percent decline in page views – troubling for any portal – Bartz touted the company’s continuing progress to better target and deliver the right audience to its advertisers.

Great go through, well-written. The problem I feel is that when visitors hover their mouse into your name and see that url directing to a blogger profile in their status bar, its extra likely that they won’t click it. Most readers just do not have the time to scan another page so in my opinion that would much more probably give lesser traffic.

Linda, nice point. You can do that or look at tradingstrategiespro.com (I can’t quite recall which article it was) and look around for forex trading, there is some quite useful free info and some great ideas what to buy, too. Whatever it is, it’s basically the same as with options trading – not difficult at all, but going in without educating yourself first is still a sure recipe for trading tragedy.

Great video. Question – when buying troy oz’s of silver .999 – I’ve noticed / found Silver Notes for sale that say ‘Federal Reserve Note’ on it. It says pure silver .999 4oz Troy Silver on a 100.00 bill. (looks similiar to yours here in this video) If its backed by the Feds could be worthless – is this something that they make to look like the real silver? Or am I ok buying this? I just want to make sure its the good stuff. Thanks for your thoughts.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
