Workout in the desert

LAS VEGAS — The Warriors had an extensive practice today at Palo Verde High School.

Because the high school band was practicing on the stadium field, the Warriors warmed up for about 45 minutes at a neighboring field.

It was a solid workout, with the Warriors working on several different schemes, particularly on special teams. Of note:

• David Graves, the injury replacement for strong safety Spencer Smith, worked out at both quarterback and safety. He also was on special teams.

• Nickelback Richard Torres is the likely replacement  for Smith at strong safety. In packages involving five defensive backs, the Warriors are mulling these options: 1) Keep Torres at strong safety and play either Lewis Walker, John Hardy-Tuliau or Jordan Gomes at nickelback. 2) Move Torres to nickelback, and use Kenny Estes at strong safety.

• Liko Satele is working out at both DE positions, with the intent of lessening right end Kamalu Umu’s workload.

* * * * *

Two cousins of quarterback Bryant Moniz made the drive from California to drop off Moniz’s computer. After making the delivery, Michael and Matt Moniz hung out for a bit, then made the drive back to California. The cousins — both Warrior Beat readers, by the way — said they wanted to save Bryant Moniz the $90 in FedEx fees. Plus, they wanted to say hi to the team. Both have lived in California for a while, but still are UH season-ticket holders for football.

    First!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

  2. Ralph September 14, 2010 10:43 am

so where is Graves playing in the db position, all of the above options is without Graves, waste of money to send a player to LV for a week and not play him.

  3. chopsueyboy September 14, 2010 10:44 am

    Top Five!

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

  4. tom mui September 14, 2010 10:46 am

    Top 5?

    GOOD MORNING GOOD PEOPLE!

  5. Ralph September 14, 2010 10:48 am

4 qbs for the Colorado game, you kidding, in high altitude the Warriors would be better off with an additional DL or OL for relief rather than a fourth qb, or a slated replacement for Smith but seems to be left out of ST projected DB schemes.

  6. d1島 September 14, 2010 10:51 am

That is not a drive I’d like to make for $90….

like I tell Mrs. d1島 when she tells me to park in the far stall: “But then we gotta walk back, too, you know?”

  7. d1島 September 14, 2010 10:52 am

    Ralph,

I don’t think everyone played in the Army game either, but still they were there.

  8. 99club September 14, 2010 10:53 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

    Ralph,

I’m sure they’ll be rotating more folks in and out during this game than in others due to the altitude. He’s very likely to see some playing time.

  9. jm2375 September 14, 2010 10:53 am

    Sorta off-topic…

Was discussing this with Screecher #1 at the vb game on Saturday. There’s no organized “club” for high school-aged fans at UH. There’s the Kids Club for keiki under 14 and then you jump to Manoa Maniacs (UH students). There should be something organized for the HS-aged kids.

And why can’t I purchase student (HS and under) tickets for the lower bowl at SSC? I’d be willing to pay a couple of $ more.

  10. NCAA September 14, 2010 10:54 am

    Mr. Ralph,

Graves may not be listed in the options outlined by Mr. Tsai but he is practicing in positions that he can play in should there be a need for him. He may also be taking Smith’s place on special teams. As someone said, let it play out.

There are other players on the road trip that will not smell one second of both games. Is that also a waste of money?

  11. kev-1 September 14, 2010 10:56 am

Pretty sure Graves is there IN CASE. I wouldn’t want to have to depend on a QB playing extensively unless ther really needed the body. That could be bad.

  12. 99club September 14, 2010 10:56 am

Just got two packages of sweet li hing mui in the mail. I love the internet!

  13. Shoko September 14, 2010 10:57 am

    D1,

90 dollars in fedex cost plus the opportunity to “hang out a bit” at the casinos is worth it. They could surely make that money back. Or lose it, but hey, its Vegas, and I wouldn’t mind making the drive. 😉

  14. al September 14, 2010 10:58 am

ralph…you need to invest some money in sam-e.

  15. 99club September 14, 2010 11:00 am

    Carried over from other post:

I saw on the UH Athletics homepage about Tulane replacing Oregon St. next year on the schedule. According to the article, the Oregon St. game was moved to the 2014 season per Oregon State’s request. But I look at 2014 and see that we were already scheduled to visit OR St. in 2014. Does UH host OR St. in 2014 and then visits at a later date TBD? Sorry if I missed this discussion previously.

  16. al September 14, 2010 11:01 am

another value of bringing the players on the fringe is that they fill a role for the road practice squad.

ralph, listen to ncaa, it is true. in fact darius bright is up there only if an emergency develops, otherwise he will redshirt this year. and while he is up there he gets to practice and further learn the offense as well be a valuable practice squad member.

so, having graves and bright are good things, because at least they get quality practices and they may be needed game time.

  17. haka September 14, 2010 11:05 am

    Go Warriors!

    Beat Colorado!

  18. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:08 am

    Mr. Ralph,

You seem like a knowledgeable UH sports person. Besides missing Aneli Cubi-Otineru’s leadership, volleyball knowledge and skills, what is missing from the Wahine team this year?

Sorry for the change of topic subject matter.

  19. Pomai September 14, 2010 11:11 am

IMHO this is a very critical game for us, with them going to the PAC12. We need to show that we can beat the teams in the PAC12, even if we stay in the WAC or go independent.

  20. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:13 am

Thanks for the reminder Mr haka, GO WARRIORS.

However, don’t blast me guys and gals, I think the altitude gets to UH and they lose a close one —- 27 – 24. Hope I’m wrong. Shoot myself in the foot and take my other foot out of my mouth.

  21. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:18 am

    Another change of topic,

Anyone see the Hawaii Five-O premier? Was Kelly Hu ever considered for the Kono role? Nothing against Grace Park.

  22. Ralph September 14, 2010 11:18 am

NCAA the Na Wahine will be very good in wvb by the time Regional play starts, we have a lot of quality HS players who are getting their feet wet, they are transitioning to D1 play. The game is quicker and faster than they competed at in HS and Club, but the talent is there, we have excellent coaches who will bring them up to speed. The three tournaments have given them a lot of eye opening experience, the coaches got to see them under pressure and now they have film to work with to fine tune their skills.

  23. haka September 14, 2010 11:21 am

Thanks for the reminder Mr NCAA, Go Wahine! 🙂

  24. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:21 am

Can someone refresh my memory on who are in the rotation for DE? My mind just went blank after writing post #21.

  25. Ralph September 14, 2010 11:22 am

NCAA Nebraska leaped frog over Hawaii. I guess AVCA coaches didn’t think UH beating UC Irvine, SDST, and St. Mary’s was that big of a deal. After BYU this week, its the WAC, so UH should be holding their position in AVCA through out the season, but I hope they get a better seeding than last season for regional play.

  26. Stephen Tsai September 14, 2010 11:23 am

While Spencer Smith is a very valuable player, it wouldn’t be saying much of the UH defense if somebody change positions overnight and expect to start with only three days of practices. There will be situations for Graves. But at the moment, there are a lot of other players above on the depth chart.

  27. Okole Maluna September 14, 2010 11:26 am

I do recall the old games played with Pre WAC Rockie Mountain States we didn’t have a good record playing away from home. Anytime you’re up there run up the hill 4,000 ft. plus and play for 3 hours will kill you… Got a suck it up Warriors and Beat the Buffaloes…

  28. 99club September 14, 2010 11:32 am

Just saw online where Reggie Bush is forfeiting the Heisman.

  29. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:34 am

    Mr. Ralph,

Thanks for the insight. From watching some of the games I did notice that the passing game is not as crisp as last year. It also looks like the Wahine went from a 3-man (woman) passing setup to a 2-man setup. Aneli is surely missed in that aspect.

Also, their service game is not as potent (missing Kaufman and Aneli) but I see Hewitt is greatly improved in that area.

I agree the freshmen will get a lot of playing time from now till regionals. Do you think they should switch to a 6-2 lineup? Having 3 attackers all the time will not only give invaluable experience to the freshmen but also provide more consistency in running their plays which in turn can make for an even faster offense. I’m not going to second guess Coach Dave Shoji because he knows his personnel and plus he has 1,000+ more VB wins than me. He knows what’s best for his team.

  30. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:38 am

Bush give up Kim Kardashian and now the Heisman, what a loser. :p

  31. RedZone September 14, 2010 11:40 am

I remember UH taking Spencer Smith on road trips knowing he would not play. I think he also sat up in the box too. If Graves is the future as some have stated I can see them sending him up to Colorado. It will be good for Graves to have the experience of being on the road in a harsh environment. Perhaps the coaches felt that bringing up another db would not have improved what they had and felt comfortable with what they had and used this opportunity to get Graves some experience.

  32. NCAA September 14, 2010 11:41 am

My apologies for my comment in #30 to any family, relatives, or friends of Reggie Bush that is reading this blog.

  33. Garret September 14, 2010 11:48 am

RGM signed a CFL contract today!

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have agreed to terms with import wide receiver/kick returner Ryan Grice-Mullen.

The University of Hawaii product spent the last two seasons with the B.C. Lions before signing with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins as a free agent during the offseason.

  34. Garret September 14, 2010 11:49 am

Interesting news out of San Antonio. The rumor that UT-SA was giving a presentation in Colorado today to the WAC was dispelled by a reporter in San Antonio.

About the only thing I’d be ready to put into public record at this point is that any meeting probably won’t be happening in Colorado, as Roadrunners AD Lynn Hickey just walked into the athletic office at around 11 a.m. That said, everyone that I’ve spoken to is pretty tight lipped, which is usually — not always, but usually — an indication that at least something is going on.

  35. Garret September 14, 2010 11:51 am

After the WAC’s Deputy Commissioner and UT-SA’s AD gave public statements, the reporter wrote:

Note that she didn’t exactly deny anything, but still, combine the two comments — Hurd seemed very frank to me, and you have to believe the deputy commissioner is pretty well plugged into the loop — and it doesn’t seem like there is anything massive in the works.

  38. Garret September 14, 2010 11:54 am

Colorado just made changes to their OL.

Junior Mike Iltis replaced Ethan Adkins at left guard last week and is now moving into the starting center job for this week’s home opener against Hawaii at Folsom Field. Iltis replaces Keenan Stevens.

Adkins is moving back into the starting role at left guard.

  39. Garret September 14, 2010 11:56 am

Teams normally use their nickel package all game against UH, so it is important to note that Colorado’s top 2 nickel backs are injured…and against UH they are starting a freshman who has never started before. I’m sure that Rolo will be monitoring who that freshman is covering and that receiver should have a great day.

Hawkins said defensive back Travis Sandersfeld has a fractured bone in his leg and will miss several weeks at least. It was the second straight week the Buffs have lost their starting nickel back. Redshirt freshman Paul Vigo now moves into the starting role there.

  40. al September 14, 2010 11:56 am

Walp, after reading Pride’s glowing description of the Boulder area, I’ve decided to go exploring and see for myself. Will arrive the morning of the game. Lots of tickets still available from the CU site.

I noticed from SteveM’s site that not many Tsaikos will be attending. Trying to decide if I want to stay in Boulder (Courtyard by Marriott) or in Broomfield (Renaissance Boulder Flatiron) or even in Denver. Anyone know where the team is staying?

  84. OldDiver September 14, 2010 12:37 pm

The moral of the Colorado fans is the worse I’ve seen yet. On their guess the score thread most have UH beating Colorado. There were two funny posts:

    1. Buffs come out in front of an inspired crowd of 38,000 and lose by 38.

    followed by

    2. Buffs come out in front of an inspired crowd of 38 and lose by 38,000.

  85. Ralph September 14, 2010 12:39 pm

NCAA the passing needs to get better and it will. Maeda is coming off injury, newbie, learning the schemes and alignment, will help the passing. Kaaihue is steady, but with the lapse in passing in the first 3 tournaments, she got to suck it up and carry the back line on her shoulders and do better if that is at all possible. She is nearing the UH career digging mark, but her “110%” effort got to go up to “120%” until the others catch up to keep UH in the winners circle.

Hewitt is serving more this season, I think last season she got sub out more often in the back row without serving. I hope Shoji allows Hartong to serve, she has a nice jump serve, she did poorly in her first match but it was her first D1 match in front of 6K loyal UH fans.

When UH receives first serve he has only Hartong and Danielson as hitters, Kaaihue, Satele (or Griffiths) and Maeda in the back. If it is Satele, they hid her in the back right corner. When there is a point scored Hartong rotates out and Hewitt in, again, only 2 hitters up front.

I notice that in a few rotations, Dave has Satele hidden on the back line with Kaaihue, Maeda and Danielson fronting her. I say hidden because she doesn’t have any space to cover forward with the other three taking up space.

In the USC game, Hewitt did not see the floor until USC was up 6-1 during the fifth game. When she came in, both Hartong and Waber were on the bench waiting their rotation.

I remember in one of the game with the same lineup, Waber did not enter the match until the score was 8-6. That’s a lot of points before she got into the game and she is UH’s OH-2 on the left.

  86. WarriorMojo September 14, 2010 12:39 pm

By the way in addition to Blaine Gaison, Walter Briggs was another all-WAC safety who converted from QB. And Lamarcus Gibson and Spencer Smith himself both traveled to most (all?) games their redshirt seasons without playing a down.

    #19 Pomai –

I couldn’t agree more. UH needs to compete/beat teams in conferences such as the PAC-10 (12). Performing like we did against USC and a good showing at CU would go a long way in trying to get the PAC-10 to give us a look in the future. Imagine if JD could point to these games and say “look, we can compete in your conference.”

Lofty thinking I know, but hey, why not?

  89. Ralph September 14, 2010 12:41 pm

This week we get BYU, it feels good to see the BYU – UH match ups in any sports.

  90. ballpicker September 14, 2010 12:54 pm

    D1,

Just checked the money line on vegas insider and its + 320 for the Warriors. Its a better bet if you’re rooting for them to win. No spread to cover.

That means there are a prohibitive underdog to the odds makers but weirder things have happened. A few years ago while in vegas, I stopped at the Santa Fe and noticed that the NY Giants were listedat 18 to 1 odds to win the Superbowl. Well I “foolishly” put down $ 100 for the Giants. That was a bet I could’nt pass on because it was better than a money line bet. We all know what happen with that game.

So if you were to put $ 10 on the home team you could win 32! Better than 11/10 bet return.

    Anybody got other suggestions?

    I do.

Lets all put some money towards the team winning the game and use the winnings for the athletic department. OOOOHHHHH. Only talking dollar amounts not the house.

A tidbit about CO going to the PAC-10:

Colorado’s chances of joining the Pac-10 by next year are “worse than 50-50,” according to commissioner Larry Scott, thanks to a steep buyout if CU leaves the Big 12 before 2012. Utah still plans to come aboard next year for an awkward, 11-team limbo year between the familiar Pac-10 and the new Pac-12.

  94. OldDiver September 14, 2010 12:57 pm

Didn’t confirm this but a Colorado fan said on one of their message boards that Dan Hawkins record at home in Colorado is about .500.

  95. Pomai September 14, 2010 12:59 pm

#88 kev-1 it would help us too if we went independent, to be able to say we can complete with any of the PAC12. As much as I don’t want to see it I do think we will be independent in the 2013 season, unless benson pull something out of his _ _ _!

Didn’t see the premiere but I’m sure Grace Park did a good job. She does sound very Californian in her interviews.

Again, Kelly Hu or Tia Carrera (sp?) should have been considered being more “local”. And if Michelle Wie could act, she might have been considered.

I would have preferred Michelle Yeoh myself

  98. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 14, 2010 1:09 pm

    Duffer,

It was unique, or maybe because we don’t hear about things like that a lot, but for Coolen to take a player on the road that cannot contribute takes some confidence on his part knowing that it would pan out.

Speaks a lot for Coach Coolen and his ability to believe in what he saw from the beginning.

Last season the Buffalows were even on their home turf..

The previous season they won 4 games on their own turf.. one in Denver’s mile-high stadium.

All seven wins over the past two seasons were at home and/or at mile-high altitudes.

  110. madeinhawaii September 14, 2010 1:37 pm

We will find out on Saturday!

    Go Warriors!!!

  120. Michigan Warrior September 14, 2010 2:17 pm

ST… Thanks for today’s updates. I, myself, like to believe that (this being Coach Mack’s third year, with the great staff he has assembled) our coaches have their reasons for doing what they’re doing.

I like that we keep practicing at high schools on road trips. That should help solidify more contacts with coaches and players in different areas of the country.

I am really, really excited for Saturday’s game to get here. I just can’t wait. And I do believe this will be a real good indicator of where our season is heading.

If the coaches need to keep some secrets, then so be it. Let’s just get these wins and keep moving ahead!!!

    Go, Warriors!

was interesting reading this morning about moniz and rolo and this is probably one of reasons why the defense is not getting the job done consistently. OVER COACHING by Aranda???? Could be. Like I said, let em loose and believe in your players. This year’s group has more speed than in the past, but they play with no enthusiasm. Watch the good defensive teams or the nfl and tell me that the defense no more enthusiasm.

  128. whitey September 14, 2010 2:55 pm

and like one of my friends was saying, he misses coach glanville cause his d took no prisoners, hitting the blockers and ball carriers, and truly tried to punish the other team’s offense.

  129. Buffoman September 14, 2010 2:59 pm

Hey, the “other female” that could have been a good fit for the Hawaii 5-0 role would have to be Maggie Q. That local gal who was in that ping-pong flick or the Die Hard flick where she spent some time kicking Bruce Willis’s butt before she ate it.

  130. whitey September 14, 2010 2:59 pm

    # 126 whitey . Are you referring to Cascioppo and Forsythe ? If so both to me haven’t been much help to us. Since arriving there has been several reasons why they can’t play.

Forsythe going back to last year claimed she had some kind of leg problem then she’s always not feeling well .This year if you look at her right hand her thumb is bandaged up .

Cascioppo has some kind of medical problem believed to be connected with her heart and went back to the mainland recently for further testing.

Hewitt who leads the nation in blocking is doing her job and that about covers the 6’3’s

    Matt Moniz???

I *THINK* I might have met Matt Moniz before.

I was at the Verizon store in Pearl City setting up my old blackberry then and my wallpaper pic was of what was the NEW Ching Field turf. The customer service guy made a comment about how nice it looked and how his cousin was on the UH football team.

He (the Verizon rep) said that his cousin Bryant played QB and mentioned he’d be the only one with really long hair.

Now that I think about it, I am pretty sure the Verizon guy’s name was Matt.

    Whitey,

I’m interested in your “favoritism” comment about the Wahine.

Perhaps you could elaborate? With regards to our players with height above 6’1″ like Hewitt, Forsythe, Cascioppo, and Waber, both Hewitt and Waber have a lot of playing time and as Last Call mentioned, both Cascioppo and Forsythe have been on the bad luck end with regards to injuries and whatnot.

Of course with last season, it was HARD to deny Amber Kaufman (6’0″) the top spot in the middle and while Aneli wasn’t “tall” she had he good share of blocks last season too, not to mention everything else she brought to the table, especially in her senior year.

But getting back to the middles, Hartong is looking just fine and is probably the most “caught up to speed” of all the freshman (Waber and Goodman) at this time. In the beginning of the season, I WOULD have liked to see Forsythe work her way towards the top of the middles alongside Hewitt, but as mentioned, injuries are in the way of that and Hartong presented more lateral speed up front for that quick offense we have built ourselves upon.

  149. Aloha Oe September 14, 2010 3:31 pm

  155. Tombo Ahi September 14, 2010 3:45 pm

99club, this is the only place I saw this info, but the Gazette Times had a quote from Oregon State’s athletic director regarding the move:

Oregon State’s football game at Hawaii in 2011 has been bumped back to Sept. 6, 2014, with the home game of the two-game series Sept. 7, 2013, according to athletic director Bob De Carolis.

The Beavers asked for the change because it was scheduled for the last week of the season. The new Pacific-12 Conference will hold a conference title game if Colorado joins by then, and that’s when the game would be played.

  163. whitey September 14, 2010 4:19 pm

ok, now that more info is available about the taller reserves, it clears a lot of things, but if you want a clarification of favortism, look at the wahines in the past when they had a lot of players who sat even if the starters where having a bad night. I don’t look for excuses of why, but look at how the game is being played. All the players, no matter what sport, is part of your team and they contribute day in and day out. If they are not good, why do you keep em??? Just to make a practice squad???? That is stupidity!!!! You keep em on the team because they contribute and have possiblities to play if you need them. We all have our favorite players at UH, but does this mean that if they are not performing they should be left in the game??? Get real and look at the game and how it is being played.

Definitely would like for the Warriors to win big in Boulder, but not only for UH and the WAC, but because CU is a deserter and has no loyalty. If it wasn’t for the Big 8, CU would be just another party school. Big 8 stood by them when they got into trouble and so did the present Big 12. I am going to wait till Oct 20th to see what will happen and who knows, but both CU and Utah may not get accepted by the majority of the PAC 10 Presidents/Chancellors.

  172. BleedGreen808 September 14, 2010 4:42 pm

Does anyone know if Spencer Smith is eligible for a medical hardship?

  173. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 14, 2010 4:43 pm

    Pomai,

The winner of the football score pick should get a FREE UH Na Wahine Softball Booster Club application form. 😉

  174. haka September 14, 2010 4:43 pm

    We must not get buffaloed.

We must stay sharp as a rifle.

We must smoke the buffalo grass.

We must bison some time to pass.

    We must impede the stampede.

We must clip the buffalo wings.

    Go Warriors!

    B-Eat Buffaloes!

    🙂

  177. madeinhawaii September 14, 2010 4:45 pm

How does a RnS team not get winded in Boulder? Oxygen deprivation might be Colorado’s 13th player.. . Defensively, do the Warriors play Zone? Offensively, who relieves Pollard and Bradley?

  183. 99club September 14, 2010 5:18 pm

    Tombo Ahi,

Mahalo for taking the time to track that down. Looks like 2013 is going to be a winner for ‘strength of schedule’: USC, Oregon St., and then BYU in September. Finish the season with Washington. 3 Pac-12 teams…not bad at all.

  184. wafan September 14, 2010 5:24 pm

I appreciate u makin us cuzinz look so dedicated and kind but i gotta tell the whole story, we had a customer to see up in Vegas this morning first and and getting to see Mo was a sweet bonus! Thanks again! Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!

@ D1 #6 – i hear ya, but had to be there for work anywayz so it worked out well

@ Shoko #13 – i hear u too, truthfully both of us barley gambled, just for a few minutes but we both walked out with more $ than we walked in with so we were definetly Blessed today!!! only the 2nd time in my life I left Vegas that way out of the many many trips there!

@ Rage 7777 #43 – was a desktop pc, we have a computer biznezz here in Cali and was able to hook him up with a good pc for a fraction of the price back home there, saving the shipping $ was the added bonus. We got lotz of ohana that go to the gamez so i am happy to still have my tix, warriors for ever!!!!

Aloha Ohana back home, see you soon!

oooh, 1 more @ kazz #140 – u got um, dat was da guy!!!

  189. Stephen Tsai September 14, 2010 5:47 pm

  195. HICA_Transplant September 14, 2010 6:01 pm

Much Mahaloz, Loyal we are, believe it or not we still tailgate before the games most of the time too, the local kine bbq or kalua pig style cookouts and drinkin at one of our homes, then we setup projectors and a bunch of people come to cheer on the Warriors!

This has been going on for years now up here in Cali with us, now it is a much bigger event tough since Mo had met so many people we know up here when he was attending Fresno City College. They all remember him from then and come out to show their support, its pretty awesome!

Will be HOME for the 2 games after Colorado though so cant wait to be tailgating at Aloha Stadium instead of here in our garages lolz!!!

Now to just beat the BUFFALOZ before then so i can feel that Staduim rockin like the good ole days! Keep up the hard work Warriors!!

  208. SteveM September 14, 2010 7:18 pm

Montoya — Welcome to the blog! What city do reside in California? The reason I ask is because all posters here who identify their location are listed at:

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/mainintpost.html

Note the lower CA (LoCal) Tsai-kos are very organized and frequent posters here…

Are there a lot of transplanted Hawaiians in your area?

Fresno City Ram Alumni here. Had some crazy times in San Fernando Valley. Lot of local boys went to FCC and FSU. In fact, a number of them still reside there.

Sorry… someone on SH forum said that Coach Mack announced on the radio earlier today that Spencer Smith’s surgery was successful and that he would be out for 12 weeks.

  231. Slugger September 14, 2010 10:35 pm

Thanks, Chawan_cut. I was at a meeting and missed the news.

    Koakane,

I found the VHS tape for Thursday.

  233. Slugger September 14, 2010 10:37 pm

    MIH,

I think that Mike Cherry reported that Smith would be out 6-8 wks.

  234. d1島 September 14, 2010 10:46 pm

Heard Mack say 12 weeks Call the Coach tonight.

    Which brings up another point.

Am I alone in thinking that Mack gives up a little too much info when he talks to the media?

  235. d1島 September 14, 2010 10:49 pm

Why let everyone know what your outside limit is for your kicker?

Why specify who will be replacing Spencer Smith?

And for the life of me, I can’t understand why you’d go into Colorado saying your QB is as calm under fire as John Elway! 😯

  236. d1島 September 14, 2010 10:52 pm

    And speaking of QB1.

In the “If you can back it up, it ain’t braggin'” category…

“No one can cover all four of our receivers”???

  237. d1島 September 14, 2010 10:56 pm

I like that the offense is getting it’s “swagger” back, but I just can’t help recalling the Waipio LL Coach telling his players, “Be humble…stay humble.”

  238. Slugger September 14, 2010 10:58 pm

    d1,

Evidently they aren’t women…who usually leave some things as a mystery as part of the allure… LOL

  239. Slugger September 14, 2010 11:05 pm

Spencer Smith redshirted in 2006, but it wasn’t a medical redshirt.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    That’s all I have to say…

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

@Slugger #239: I’m glad that they are not women, but I agree about the mystique thing. That’s the problem with men, too much macho…maybe the George Ariyoshi thing may be better, i.e., “quiet but effective”???

  242. bighilofan2 September 15, 2010 1:07 am

    Good Wednesday morning Warrior fans!

  244. wafan September 15, 2010 2:57 am

Gotta agree. Too much information going out is not always a good thing. Keep them guessing.

  245. Garret September 15, 2010 3:09 am

Good luck to Kelly Shinn, the UH student who is on Survivor on CBS that starts tonight, but I’m going to be cheering for the older tribe (the one that has Jimmy Johnson).

  246. Garret September 15, 2010 3:12 am

“Buff nation, I promise you this type of thing will never happen again. Going out there and playing like that will never happen again while I’m at Colorado and I can promise that! It’s unacceptable.”

    http://www.timescall.com/sports_story.asp?ID=23493

  247. Garret September 15, 2010 3:14 am

Losing Spencer Smith for the season would be a huge blow, especially since it would end his Warrior career because he wouldn’t be able to get a medical redshirt. There is no need to collect medical information for him if his redshirt year was not for medical reasons.

Hopefully Mack misspoke and he’s out 6 weeks instead of 12 weeks. Six weeks would bring Spencer back for the crucial final month of the season.

  248. Garret September 15, 2010 3:17 am

Karl Benson talked about how he and Craig Thompson (MWC’s commissioner) met last week and Benson told Thompson that he needed Nevada and Fresno to play in the WAC next season. It would be interesting to find out what Thompson said and how that discussion went…

  249. Garret September 15, 2010 3:31 am

    ST,

There is a little typo in your article that I hope that the Star-Advertiser techies can fix.

He credited plyometrics, a box-juming exercise.

  250. Michigan Warrior September 15, 2010 4:18 am

#249… Garret… I can just picture Thompson laughing at Benson… then, he says to Benson, “What? Losing your job soon and now looking at stand-up comedy?”

Of course, I’d hope they’d be a bit more professional to each other than that, but… you never know.

  251. HICA_Transplant September 15, 2010 5:22 am

h: – 210 there are just a few, not really to many anymore, some have moved up north with the economic hit this place has taken.

i was at a bunch of FCC Ram games a few years ago when Mo was playing up there, we always had a great time there too. I would say I saw many more locals up there then down this way, thas for sure. Sorry no more hook ups for you…. But I definatley remember you… You got a great memory to remember the guy with the long hair was my cousin. HAHAHA oh the good old days….

@ Steve… Thanks for the shout out.. we didnt think this was going to happen but its pretty cool…. Keep up the good writing so we can keep up with the team… even though we are so far away it still seems like we are there…

Warrior Nation… Keep cheering our boys on and we will win the WAC… Make the “LEAVING SCHOOLS” Realize who the real WAC Champ is and always will be……

    Go WARRIORS….

  254. bighilofan2 September 15, 2010 6:53 am

Its too bad that Hawaii/WAC is dependent on a Commish like Benson

lets face facts. BSU did what was good for BSU. they didn’t want to be tield down by da Commish. On the other hand, we dn’t have the luxury of being where logistics are not a problem, relatively speaking. and we won’t have a big market unless we go make a bigger market for ourselves. I don’t see Japan, Korea, China or a Canada University joining the WAC.

the only thing we can control is our play. we gotta play like we won’t quit. and that is why I just love this team. the USC and Army games showed me they won’t quit.

Colorado is in for a rude ride.

    Go Warriors

nice James Cameron movie. But how do we know how to interact. Its all gestures. Also, looks like all projected interfaces from some mysterious hidden projector. May be all future materials can change color if given some current. Like E-ink. Also if the data needs to flow seamlessly from one device medium to another, we need to buy all microsoft product only including the coffee cup shown. How does iPhone fit into this ecosystem.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Many bloggers are great leader; especially lead their own blog to become the most popular blog in the world. I wonder what you think about this. Many successful bloggers created or made jobs for other people. It is wise idea, I think. We agree that you can become this too. By commenting on your blog, I trust you because I had “blog-walked” to your blog intensively, especially see and check your analysis. It is fantastic! Wonderful thought that you gave to other readers, share the biggest idea, unique thought, and then debate them. For me as learner, it is the most important thing to you and us. I have spent many times, from time to come, and I am sure this is the right time to me to recruit you as a writer, hope you are responsible to your future job. Great time to comment on this page, I am looking forward to chatting or email with you

Because the only way the administration can sell this is by presenting the idea of massive job loss. Now having said that I must also say this. You cannot just talk about those people working in the actual assembly plants. There are also subsidiaries and vendors who supply these plants. The workforces who sell and service the cars. Not to mention any number of businesses unrelated to the actual company who depend on the worker dollars to remain in business. I am against the auto bailout and have been from the start, but your post does not really paint a true picture of the scope of the problem related to possible job loss.
