Monday ramblings

• Quarterback Bryant Moniz will resume practicing tomorrow, UH head coach Greg McMackin said after this morning’s 2-hour practice. He is expected to start in Saturday’s road game against Army.

• McMackin also said that Brent Rausch and Shane Austin are “bracketed” as the No. 2 quarterbacks.

• The coaches will meet today to set the travel roster. Some of the issues: Will David Graves, who has been running Army’s offense in practices, travel as the fourth quarterback? Will the Warriors bring two kickers?

• Former UH lineman Ray Hisatake, who was cut by the Carolina Panthers Saturday, is back in Hawaii. He is expected to attend tomorrow’s practice.

• The paper work has been filed and former UH receivers Ashley Lelie and Jason Rivers now are student assistants who may do some on-field coaching. They previously were listed as student managers.

Good to see we’re thinking of bringing two kickers…Enos’ kick-offs has alot to be desired and was worth 20-30 yards of field position. Hopefully, our freshman kicker can kick-it and get touchbacks like the USC kicker did…

Did Alexander return any kickoffs? I didn’t see him on the stat sheet.

  9. Slugger September 6, 2010 10:23 am

Bunch of Tsaikos going to the Na Koa lunch today. I’ll be at our usual table.

    Bowwar,

We don’t have an Alexander on the team anymore…? Did you mean Allen Sampson?

  10. NYUH September 6, 2010 10:26 am

It would be nice if they put a link to the warrior beat on at least the sports page.

I thought Henry did a decent job at punt returns. I’d rather see him than Salas back there. Fun to watch Owens on ESPN3 today. Canadians punt more because they only have 3 downs. I think.

Hope the second/third string offense gets in some playing time at Army. I like what Mr. Pilares said on the coach’s show that all the receivers and QBs are on the same page. Need to keep the troops running at full speed for Colorado (isn’t there some altitude issue there?).

  17. 808gridiron September 6, 2010 10:51 am

Dont forget to take the Defense with you. Get it this time D!

  18. tommui September 6, 2010 10:52 am

NYUH: Re #14 – nothing wrong with publicity for Moniz. Army has to spend time preparing for him with the assumption he will play.

And if he does not play in the Army game, the Army brain trust has spent valuable preparation time anticipating that he will play.

  19. Michigan Warrior September 6, 2010 10:54 am

Good to hear that Moniz is good to go. Looking forward to seeing more of Alex Green and Chizzy Dimude… and seeing our O-Line push for first downs/touchdowns!

  46. madeinhawaii September 6, 2010 12:39 pm

Steve… I believe Boise keeps half and the rest of the WAC share the balance.

  47. madeinhawaii September 6, 2010 12:41 pm

If the Warriors go undefeated till a Boise showdown for the WAC… A Warrior win would pay dividends for the rest of the season and in season ticket sales next year. It would also put the Warriors in better position to go independent if need be. So the Warriors winning out and beating Boise is greater than the share they could receive from Boise going to a BCS bowl.

  48. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2010 12:44 pm

It looks like Benson and the WAC may have been outmaneuvered again, this time by the Big Sky Conference:

    http://calpolymustangs.yuku.com/topic/2873

    http://calpolymustangs.yuku.com/topic/2875

    http://calpolymustangs.yuku.com/topic/2881

If true, none of the western FCS schools will have much if any incentive to move up to FBS and join the WAC.

  49. Garret September 6, 2010 12:50 pm

    Steve,

If BSU makes it to a BCS game, they will get to keep $3 million and the WAC would get $3 million to split. Before the WAC changed its BCS payout rules a little over a year ago, the team going to the game would get $4.5 million and the WAC would have split $1.5 million…but BSU would have left *all* of its money behind if it made a BCS game.

Bigger issue is if BSU goes undefeated, the MWC might get a much better chance to become an AQ conference. That is bad for the WAC…

  50. Garret September 6, 2010 12:53 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

Cal Poly, UC-Davis, and the rest of the California targets did NOT have enough money to move up to D-IA. Small TV value, severely restricted budgets, and major budget limitations just makes it impossible now. For this I don’t blame Karl Benson…there is NO way that the WAC was outmaneuvered, the WAC has been talking to all possible D-IAA targets for awhile now.

It seems to me that the only schools with the money and desire to move up now are Texas State and UT-San Antonio. Cal Poly and UC-Davis moving to the WAC were just a fantasy by UH fans that wanted easier travel for UH.

  51. whitey September 6, 2010 12:59 pm

    STOPPED!!

    no balls – no glory.

  54. whitey September 6, 2010 1:02 pm

Garret, you probably correct on which schools the WAC should pursue and I think that the 2 Texas schools would be an excellent choice as they have upgraded themselves and have a growing student body. This would be a huge boost for the WAC.

  55. whitey September 6, 2010 1:03 pm

Hawiianbod, good to see you posting regualrly. How is your son doing???

  56. bstunna2002 September 6, 2010 1:08 pm

Actually this being Bosie’s last season in the WAC they would forfeit all revenue from a bowl appearence…

  57. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2010 1:11 pm

Garret, I respectfully disagree. UC Davis already has a $20 million athletic budget, and Sac State is at $16 million. Those amounts compare favorably to half of the remaining WAC members. Given a reasonable transition period to raise money for facility improvements, either or both could be viable WAC candidates. Unfortunately the key motivator for both schools to move up to FBS is concern over the financial and competitive viability of western FCS football. (Montana has the same concern.) If the Big Sky moves proactively to fix that problem by pulling all of the western FCS programs together, that motivation disappears.

  58. Hawaiianbod September 6, 2010 1:12 pm

sorry, but #54 is in refrence to Maryland/Navy game.

(instead of Navy going for a tie and forcing overtime, Navy decides to go for the touchdown with the ball inside the 1-yard line……….and they were stopped).

  65. Steve September 6, 2010 1:39 pm

    wowlaulau:

I want to thank you for what you said in Cindy’s blog. This Wahine team can win it all, with the right players in the right position. These freshmen, and I include Satele, among them, need a setter who can put up sets that they can handle, and not a set that they have to figure out what to do with it. All I have seen this season so far, are sets by Uiato that say “hit me” all over the ball, whereas Mafua’s sets well……

  66. SailorBlue September 6, 2010 1:41 pm

Pomai ~ you hit the nail on the head. We had the opportunities, but turnovers killed us… we gave that game to MD…guess the guys shouldn’t have read all the press releases and believed all the hype.

Have a good afternoon….off to get some groceries 🙂

  67. Garret September 6, 2010 1:47 pm

Actually this being Bosie’s last season in the WAC they would forfeit all revenue from a bowl appearence…

    bstunna2002,

That *used* to be the case. I posted on this blog the exact WAC rule that was changed last summer and noted how it explicitly allowed a WAC team to keep the $3 million it gets from a BCS bowl game no matter what conference they are in after the season. The WAC made the rule, Karl Benson explained the rule, and they even gave the specific example of how BSU would keep their $3 million even if they left the WAC.

I posted here at the time my surprise that the WAC so explicitly was allowing departing teams to keep their BCS money. We can thank Karl Benson for this change in the WAC rules.

  68. A-House September 6, 2010 1:50 pm

    Callin CRW.!

    U have mail.

  69. Garret September 6, 2010 1:52 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

I have been following UC-Davis *very* closely because I enjoyed several visits to their campus and they would be a great addition to the WAC. Their leadership is NOT looking for facility upgrades to go to D-IA and the additional number of scholarships they would need to provide. UC-Davis is in cost-cutting mode and they are getting hammered by budget cuts and a bad economy in their local area.

Where is the money going to come from? They had to raise fees (which includes tuition) by 32% last year and they still cannot meet their budgets. Did you notice I posted a link last week that showed how they discovered a $20 billion deficit in their pension fund? $20 billion for the UC system is a huge problem for UC-Davis. Even before the pension problem UC-Davis was having to cut budgets and services. In that environment, we cannot expect them to raise money to move up to join the WAC.

  71. mctruck September 6, 2010 1:52 pm

Pomai, ur #61/62…..agree with you; I was wondering why NAVY went to their bread/butter play…cause that’s what the Terps keyed-on.

Anyways……Navy had a lot of opportunities in the red zone and just couldn’t punch it in…sorta reminded me on our own problem, yeah???

  72. Garret September 6, 2010 1:54 pm

    Steve,

Maybe Karl Benson was looking out for BSU? Anyway, UH agreed to the rule change also–UH could have objected if they wished.

  73. mctruck September 6, 2010 1:55 pm

Actually…..I would have gone with giving their fb the rock rather than Dodds trying to sneek it in.

  74. Steve September 6, 2010 1:59 pm

#73 I did not realize that UH had that much money that they did not need more. Or, did they just go along with a stupid commish.

  81. A-House September 6, 2010 2:18 pm

Watching the Boise St game and noticed their new uniforms WITHOUT the WAC on their shirts.

If that’s the case, why did Benson allow this? Who the heck do they represent? the MWC? If this is so, then Bosie St should have no rights to any $$$ paid for football or any other sport.

  90. Markazulu September 6, 2010 2:51 pm

Dont overlook Army there Defense is a pretty damn good defense I heard they were ranked in the top #10 in stoping the pass. So Dont overlook them thinking they will lay down. Hopefully the Warriors run them over More TD’s an Lesser Field Goals espically from the 10 yard line down. I’m glad Enos is making kicks but I prefer TD’s

2 situations in the red zone led to 6 instead of a possible 12 at the minimum on points. If we can put it in the end zone and our Defense shows up an do what Mana Silva said as stop the “run” then they should be good.

I’ll cheer for them no matter what but I want them to just play.

    Go Warriors.

Boise is running Virginia Tech out the stadium in the 1st quarter. But it’s still earlier 17-0 Boise.

  91. madeinhawaii September 6, 2010 2:59 pm

First game of the season is neva easy, but so far the BSU-VT game is entertaining. I kinda wonder if it is important for the WAC that BSU win this game. I don’t know how it will affect the WAC, but I don’t you will see me cheering for them in this game or future games. The same for Fresno and Nevada. Maybe poor sport, but sometimes you need to do things to satisfy your own self and this is one of those times.

NYUH: Thanks for the info I’m glad to hear the warriors are number 1 an the quality opponent that hawaii faced is what makes that number mean so much more.

  112. chopsueyboy September 6, 2010 4:02 pm

Virginia Tech has lost to the eventual national champion 3 previous times

    2004 USC

    2007 LSU

    2009 Alabama

If they lose to BSU, would history repeat itself???

anyone going to Call the Coach show tonight?

  113. NYUH September 6, 2010 4:07 pm

I’m all for BS in this game. They deserve to move on if they want. They have gained my respect over the years, despite the blue field. Besides WAC getting some respect after the first week with Utah State and Hawaii playing big BSC teams close while Fresno beat Cincy and some of the other WAC teams did well. http://espn.go.com/ncf/conferences/standings?confId=16&year=2010

  114. madeinhawaii September 6, 2010 4:12 pm

VT ties it with the go ahead pat coming up..

  115. Markazulu September 6, 2010 4:12 pm

NYUH: I agree with you. For as long as they are in the WAC I’ll cheer for them but as soon as they leave I’ll still respect them but I wont be hoping they win as they are now. I just want some respect for the WAC. An since Utah State gave Oklahoma a hard time, If Boise beats Virginia Tech & Oregon State, an since Fresno beat Cinci. I want Hawaii to run themover nothing personal just business. I’m just a fan that can dream.

  116. Steve September 6, 2010 4:12 pm

VT touchdown, VT 21 BSU 20 BSU looking tired, starting to cramp up.

  117. Kekoa (iPhone) September 6, 2010 4:12 pm

    NYUH ~

On short notice, might I suggest that you download the Tsaiko logo on SteveM’s site. You may then blow it up at Kinko’s and paste it on a placard.

Office Depot sells applique sheets for stick on stuff you can print the logo on. Enjoy the game!

  118. Steve September 6, 2010 4:13 pm

Does anyone know who was the last team to beat BSU during the regular season?

  119. Steve September 6, 2010 4:14 pm

    That is a pop quiz.

  123. wafan September 6, 2010 4:19 pm

I guess VT is bigger and faster than BSU.

  124. NYUH September 6, 2010 4:20 pm

With Kiffin saying he did not feel the need to tinker with the defense is he saying that their defense is acceptable; that Hawai’i’s offensive production was a fluke; or that their defense and coaches will figure it out and improve?

  132. whitey September 6, 2010 4:46 pm

Now, who knows, maybe Austin was a tremendous quarterback, who accidentally got the wrong spot on the Hawaii depth chart, or maybe the Trojans’ defense was just really that bad.

    From LA Times

  133. whitey September 6, 2010 4:47 pm

Take one game at a time, and this week it is Army. Go Warriors!!!!

  134. whitey September 6, 2010 4:51 pm

Luckily, the Trojans have a fairly easy game coming up in Virginia, and then a potential hazard when they take on Minnesota. After that, it’s back to the grind of an increasingly difficult conference.

    From LA Times

I just hope no one from the Warriors or Hawaii news media ever writes something like this. No matter how scrub a team you may be playing, stranger things have happened and you just asking for a major “bachi”.

  135. Pomai September 6, 2010 4:51 pm

A lot of college games this weekend, out of all the games I’ve watched I think UH could beat any of them.

  136. Slugger September 6, 2010 4:55 pm

The VT QB Taylor got a call from the refs on the same type of thing that happened to Salas at the goal line…the back of his hand on the ground but not his knee…they ruled that he was not down. So, why is this different from what happened to Salas? I think we wuz robbed of a TD.

  137. Shoko September 6, 2010 5:11 pm

I think in Salas case, because he didn’t have his feet on the ground like Taylor (tripod), it was ruled a down. Could be wrong tho.

VT needs to watch the trick plays. That last kick, if it weren’t for the delay penalty, that was supposed to be a trick play.

  138. Shoko September 6, 2010 5:14 pm

This game is over. What a way to finish a weekend of football.

  150. madeinhawaii September 6, 2010 5:29 pm

Hats off to Boise.. hard fought win… I wanted VT to win.. but Boise deserved this win… without a doubt. They came to play and didn’t take VT for granted in any way.

  151. lil.s September 6, 2010 5:30 pm

VT seemed to panick a bit… they through downfield on all 4 plays… shouldve dumped in short and grab first downs. they only needed 3 points to tie and with maybe 30-35 yards in 1:09 which is plenty of time

  152. chawan_cut September 6, 2010 5:30 pm

  157. Slugger September 6, 2010 5:38 pm

    Shoko,

In Salas’ case, it appeared his legs were up, off the ground, as he rolled over the top of the defender and only the back of his hand with the ball was on the ground (as shown in the pics). Did he roll toward the end zone and get the ball into the end zone before his knees/feet touched the ground? Wouldn’t that mean a TD?

No WAC logo on the Boise jerseys…I don’t like the blue-grey color.

  158. d1島 September 6, 2010 5:45 pm

  164. Shoko September 6, 2010 5:50 pm

    Slugger,

I don’t know for sure. At the time I thought it was a TD, but as you stated, his back of the hand touched the ground. The refs said that his elbow touched the ground prior to crossing the goalline. I’m not sure of the rationalization for the refs to call it a down rather than a TD. I’ll leave that question up to the powers that be.

  165. Slugger September 6, 2010 5:52 pm

Hey, HiFlyer! Glad you got the ‘puter going. Makes me want to backup my files.

  166. Shoko September 6, 2010 5:52 pm

Well, eleven more games to upset BSU’s hopes for a National Championship, but on the brightside, if they do, we can expect a share of the BCS money, as CDB stated.

is it true that boise will not get any of the wac’s money if they do make the bcs because they’re headed out of the conference? and what’s with that? no wac patch. might as well wear a mwc one already.

  172. A-House September 6, 2010 6:23 pm

    chawan:

Boise and/or Benson pulled a fast one as Bosie will keep $3 million of any BCS game and rest to the WAC even if they are leaving.

Old rule was Bosie keeps $4.5 mil and rest to WAC, but they get $0000 if they leave the conference. Unfortunately, UH voted for this new set up.

First thing I noticed was Bosie St did not have the WAC patch on their new uni-top. Forutnately, Brent Musburger(sp) kept referring to the WAC. This is USC arrogance at its very best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Game pau, but if you noticed anything that the warriors can take advantage of, email the coaches and let them know your observations. Who knows, you may be the difference.

  176. whitey September 6, 2010 6:35 pm

This week is seek and destroy and expect the d line and lb to make a lot of plays for negative yards. Somehow we lack a speed de like Laboy or Noga, but am sure that the warriors will rise to this occassion and be successful.

Got your em, A-House. I’ll catch up with Midori7 tomorrow. Mahalo!

  180. Garret September 6, 2010 7:38 pm

    chawan_cut,

Here is confirmation from NBC about how BSU will keep their $3 million in BCS money whether or not they are in the WAC next year.

One of the things in the financial favor of the Broncos is that, if they announce their intentions of leaving the WAC this July and qualify for a BcS bowl game following the 2010 season, they will be allowed to keep the $3 million bonus for making it to a BcS game.

  181. Garret September 6, 2010 7:40 pm

BSU will even get to keep their bowl money if they go to a non-BCS bowl! The WAC is even given BSU money for their bowl game travel expenses.

Boise State will receive bowl money from the WAC for the 2010-11 season, but the rest of the Broncos’ share will be distributed to the remaining eight league members. Boise State will receive $3 million for a BCS appearance and $375,000 for a non-BCS bowl game. The school also gets money for travel costs.

  182. Evow September 6, 2010 7:41 pm

  183. greenthumb September 6, 2010 7:44 pm

We missed the Boise game, but if the uniforms really don’t have the WAC logo — not oopsie, we sewed it inside the jerseys — where is Mr. Benson and the fine or censure? And I hope that the MWC and Pac-10 are taking note of how Boise treats its relationships. I had been viewing Boise’s behavior departure as different from Fresno and Nevada but not so much anymore.

    2001/ 9-3 (78.8%)

    1999/ 9-4 (78.7%)

    2003/ 9-5 (81.7%)

    2004/ 8-5 (86.5%)

    2008/ 7-7 (73.1%)

    2009/ 6-7 (61.4%)

    2005/ 5-7 (75.4%)

    2000/ 3-9 (62.9%)

We obviously would or should try to keep our red zone percentage above 78.

  233. Pride. September 7, 2010 2:54 am

What’s interesting is that our past eleven seasons don’t show how important relationship there is between turnover ratio and won-loss record. I still believe though, that keeping turnovers to a minimum is the best way to go.

    2007/ 12-1 (-6)

    2006/ 11-3 (+1)

    2002/ 10-4 (-14)

    2001/ 9-3 (+9)

    1999/ 9-4 (0)

    2003/ 9-5 (-8)

    2004/ 8-5 (-2)

    2008/ 7-7 (-7)

    2009/ 6-7 (-11)

    2005/ 5-7 (-3)

    2000/ 3-9 (-7)

  234. Pride. September 7, 2010 2:57 am

That 2002 10 and 4 record with a (-14) giveaway/takeaway ratio is kind of funky. Not sure what happened that year. Of course that near 80% red zone percentage I’m sure was a big help.

  235. Pride. September 7, 2010 3:08 am

Total offensive yardage in 2002 compared to our opponent was 6939 to 5530. That is probably what canceled out the negative turnover ratio(-14). Just guessing.

  236. Pride. September 7, 2010 3:12 am

The same thing happened in 2007 with Hawaii carrying a negative turnover ratio(-6), but finishing with a 12 and 1 record. Offensively we had 6,657 yards compared to our opponent’s 4,522 yards. That’s insane.

  237. Pride. September 7, 2010 3:15 am

Hawaii has always been good offensively in the past eleven years. I still would like to see us play sound football though. That would mean winning in the areas such as turnovers, solid run defense, and special teams.

  238. wafan September 7, 2010 3:34 am

    Good morning!

  239. wafan September 7, 2010 3:35 am

  240. wafan September 7, 2010 3:36 am

    Happy birthdays to M/M Tsai!!!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  241. lil.s September 7, 2010 3:39 am

238:much had to do with brennan’s 10 ints vs idaho and st jose… lets hope our opponents don’t take game notes from those two or else we may be in trouble the rest of the year…unless our D comes through in critical moments like in 07

  242. Pride. September 7, 2010 3:39 am

Below is what our total yardage numbers were compared to our opponents, over the last eleven seasons.

    2007/ 12-1 (+2135)

    2006/ 11-3 (+2540)

    2002/ 10-4 (+1409)

    2001/ 9-3 (+372)

    1999/ 9-4 (+490)

    2003/ 9-5 (+1266)

    2004/ 8-5 (-692)

    2008/ 7-7 (-211)

    2009/ 6-7 (+158)

    2005/ 5-7 (+453)

    2000/ 3-9 (-102)

I think if we can combine those numbers with the turnover ratio and the red zone percentage, we can get a pretty good pulse of the team. I will keep an eye on those numbers, and a few others as the 2010 season progresses.

  243. Pride. September 7, 2010 3:40 am

anyone know the weather outlook for this weeks game? heard there was some storms headed up there. if it rains, lets hope they have a better drainage system then 07@san jose. that might factor huge considering army’s running vs our D that isn’t great at tackling just yet and our skill set positions that will be slowed vs army’s football cadet’s that train in those conditions.

Weather is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 73. Don’t know what the humidity will be; BSU looks like it had a real problem with the humidity last night. As a kid I thought I knew about humidity from Kona winds. I did not know humidity. My second day at West Point (in July) I thought I must have contracted malaria because I was sweating profusely just sitting still.

  388. write cover letter for resume October 1, 2010 9:46 pm

I would suggest url for a specific site. Search engine results positioning web-sites through web site certainly not simply by total web site. And when you anchor your current document on your web site in the blog, after which it on the post, build another inbound point web page link for your domain. This kind of produces superior leading in addition to raise higher ranking of your web sites. I’ve got a few internet sites carrying this out plus extremely brief even as it can get ranking high online internet search engine, obviously individuals websites usually are fewer competition specialized niche, but nevertheless can certainly whip thousands and thousands and even several millions web page on the market. This particular leading play a role as well.
