O-line not set yet

Line coach Gordy Shaw said the Warriors still are not set at two starting jobs on the offensive line. Left tackle Austin Hansen, right guard Adrian Thomas and right tackle Laupepa Letuli have secured starting jobs.

The coaches were prepared to announce left guard Brysen Ginlack and center Brett Leonard as starters. But Shaw said at least another day of evaluation is needed. The holdup, apparently, is the battle between Leonard and Bronson Tiwanak at center. Leonard and Ginlack had been battling at left guard.

Head coach Greg McMackin said a decision could wait another day. The Warriors will not begin practicing exclusively for USC, the season opener, until Thursday.

Let’s suppose your partner leaves. You could sue, I imagine, on grounds the partner  broke some sort of  agreement. I’m pretty sure the WAC has legal arguments against the schools that make commitment promises one week and then leave the next. I’m sure the WAC, through legal means, could get both money and make the breakaways hurt as much. But … sheesh. If somebody doesn’t want to be with you, somebody doesn’t want to be with you. It’s wasted energy and time to think otherwise, and, in the end, Fresno State, Nevada, Boise State and, if there are no statutes of limitations, UNLV, San Dieg State, etc., are not coming back. The WAC should focus all of its energies on finding new teams — and maybe its dignity.

* * * * *

On the other hand, it would be kind of fun for the WAC to sue the presidents of Fresno State and Nevada. Essentially, both are board members of the WAC. They have access to the finances and other WAC information. To use such information for their own benefit, breaking their responsibility to the league, well, that makes them liable.

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid August 24, 2010 7:01 am

UH should only do that which helps to give it a secure future in a conference somewhere.

Other than that, I’m with koakane, stick it to ’em deep and hard!

In today’s economy, I think you make the teams that left hurt financially. They will probably make it up being in the MWC anyway. If UH left first, I would have expected the WAC to sue UH, and frankly I wouldn’t have mind now that we were in the MWC.

  18. Stretch August 24, 2010 7:09 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

ST asked me to post that practice is from 7 AM to 9 AM this morning. Unfortunately he is on the road to practice and can’t post the correction. And YES, he is still driving to the football practice that already started, nothing new.

  19. d1島 August 24, 2010 7:14 am

Short memories seem to be the order of the day. No sense worry about lingering effects of playing hardball with the defectors. Subsequent Administrators can always claim “that didn’t happen on our watch.”

As far as expending energy, leave that to the attorneys!

No worries DPK. Slugger has VIP ‘frenz’ status amongst the team, and their mom’s. She introduced me to Shane Austin’s mom at practice last week.

Mrs. Austin is looking forward to coming to our t-gate along with some of the other parents of our Warrior team.

  40. (Jesse) James August 24, 2010 8:02 am

    Last call…

Some of us were talking this weekend about the situation and I noted that ESPN had reported that talks were underway with the WCC and going independent in football. We actually thought that the BIG West would be more fitting for UH in the other sports and going independent in football was the only option. As it is right now, the WAC is in shambles. If NMSU drops to a lower division because of their financial situation and La Tech goes to C-USA like they want to, then the WAC is dead. We need to look at other options.

  48. greenthumb August 24, 2010 8:22 am

Good morning. I am pastready for some volleyball and good news … but the big question is:

Are you ready for some volleyball?

As for the exit fees and so on, my thoughts as a fan who is angry now but looking ahead. UH and the remaining WAC teams need a double approach. First, on the field (and court), players playing beyond themselves and fans in the audience making plenty noise to show UH’s competitive spirit. Lots of Ws by us and other remaining teams will make the best-ever “parting gifts.” 😉

Second, stick to the letter and spirit of the WAC law. Pursue the fines; decide whether an early departure by Fresno and Nevada is more beneficial to us or them — probably them at this point, right, but things might change. This serves two results. First, we don’t look like pushovers, we look professional, and show that we honor agreements (remember that for someone like USU, we are showing solidarity and also that choices have consequences). Second, even if it is $5 million total that the WAC gets, it is $5 million we didn’t have before. Use some of it as a golden parachute, maybe, and bring in a more proactive leader if that is something the remaining members would value? Just my few pennies, anyway.

    Howzit Tsaiko Nation!

Still lurkin’ after all these months (and years) (tip o’ the hat to Paul Simon…)

It looks to me like the WAC is disintegrating, so I’d support UH negotiating its way into the BWC — I think it would be a perfect fit in the non-FBall sports, for both UH and BWC interests. And that would mean FBall goes Independent, as I don’t see a viable alternative, unless the MWC decides it wants us. In that case we’d have two viable options, a nice position to be in.

Meanwhile, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME VOLLEYBALL?

I sure am! Looking forward to another fabulous season with the Rainbow Wahine! Final 4 Hana Hou!!

Are you ready for some volleyball?

I think the Hawaii would be a perfect fit for the Big West. I would imagine that it would be Shoji’s choice as well. But can UH make it as a football independent? It would take some work, but I think it’s possible. As far as scheduling goes, play BYU, Army, Navy, UNLV, three PAC 10 schools, an FCS school, and complete the schedule with the rest of the disbanded WAC every year. That should cover it. 🙂

How do you compare your college football practices with that of your high school football practices? For the returning Warriors, What are your thoughts on this years team, was the coaching realignment an improvement? What did you learn from last year to make yourself better this year? What do the Warriors do in their not so “spare time”? How is the team coming together? etc. etc. etc. etc.

While Hawaii may be looking at the Big West, BY-Who would seem to be a pretty good fit for the private, religiously-oriented schools of the WCC. U. of Denver (Methodist founding) may be a potential travel partner.

If BYU goes independent in football and doesn’t want to join a six-school Western Athletic Conference for basketball and other sports, then perhaps BYU and non-football University of Denver could make it eight.

DU has made no secret of seeking a league home outside the geographically challenging Sun Belt Conference. Likewise, WAC commissioner Karl Benson said on his conference call last week he’s acknowledged past interest from DU as a non-football member.

The immediate priority for the WAC is growing its football membership in the wake of losing Fresno State and Nevada to the MWC.

About the only other place for BYU to look for its remaining sports menu is the Gonzaga-owned West Coast Conference. There are eight schools in the league comprised of religious-affiliated universities. If BYU goes in, DU could be a logical travel partner.

Jason Eborn from the Deseret News just posted this on his blog:

I’ve received a few requests for details on the buyout contract agreed to and/or signed by the eight members of the WAC. All eight verbally agreed to sign it, but Nevada’s president did not.

Here’s the information provided by my source from the early draft.

    • Upon agreement of the conditions of this MOU, WAC members and BYU will enter into a contract that prohibits any current WAC member school and BYU from joining any other conference during the 1st 5 years of the agreement; or joining any new athletic conference during the 1st 5 years of the agreement. Penalty for departing within the 1st 5 years will be $5 million. However, any WAC school or BYU would be permitted to join a conference that currently has automatic access for its champion into the BCS without penalty; i.e Pac 10 or Big 12. In addition, La Tech would not be bound by this provision should it elect to join another conference. Should BYU or any WAC member leave the WAC for a BCS conference this contract would be terminated for the rest of the parties. [If (i) any current member of the WAC leaves the conference (with the exception of La Tech), whether to join a BCS AQ conference or by exercising the buy-out provision, or if (ii) any new member joins the WAC, BYU has the option, at its sole discretion, to terminate the agreement without any buy-out penalty.]

agree with your assessment. if UH got an invite, I am sure they would have done the same as Fresno and nevada. Be realistic, cannot cry over split milk, save time, effort and money to move forward instead of trying to be vindictive. College sports is an economic enterprise, cannot fault schools wanted to better their economic viability. The fault lies with the leadership of the conference.

Great catch of the day at practice: Royce Pollard catching a pass from Moniz (I think) almost one-handed, leaping forward and landing on his back. Yay!!! Touchdown!

i was wondering when the big west would be considered. it makes the most sense for all the programs.

besides the obvious geographically concentrated locales of california making our travel more affordable we would love to have the beach, pacific, and the like on our taraflex courts once again. i suppose some travel assistance must be offered to the big west.

baseball, softball, and basketball should welcome the big west as they offer some very good competition for all these sports and this is also our recruiting base for these programs as well.

  109. Oh man… sounds like the volleyball match against UCLA on Sunday is filling up in the stands.

  110. Unkanesson August 24, 2010 10:39 am

Nate Hara – #80 – Big West does not compete in football, so D1A/D1AA isn’t relevant. They are considered D1 in other sports.

  111. RichfromOC August 24, 2010 10:43 am

More and more schools are using the “hurry up” offense where no huddle is used and the play is called from the bench while the offense is at the line of scrimmage. The reason being, it throws off the defense and the proper personnel cannot be inserted into the game. Does anyone know if we are experimenting with this as well or is this “confidential?”. Thanks.

  112. al August 24, 2010 10:45 am

(j)/j…you got one extra helmet for me? no need pads and i’ll go barefooted. that just made me feel like going out and hitting someone. maybe one skinny wide receiver coming across the middle.

    snap!

okay, one snap and clear. now i am ready for the tailgater. hahaha.

  113. (Jesse) James August 24, 2010 10:46 am

  114. Unkanesson August 24, 2010 10:48 am

    Pomai,

Been struggling with this — Heart says 42-20 UH, Brain says 42-20 SC. For this poll, I’ll go with Heart! Moniz and our stable of receivers tear up the young SC secondary, keeping the SC offense on the sidelines.

    UH 42, USC 20.

    GO WARRIORS!!

  115. gigi-hawaii August 24, 2010 10:49 am

    #106 James,

  116. Slugger August 24, 2010 10:50 am

    al,

As Royce was in the air falling backwards, he caught the ball one-handed and pulled it in…didn’t have control with one hand…and the crowd went wild!!!

  117. HawaiiMongoose August 24, 2010 10:52 am

Re #75, Pomai that’s a really neat idea, it could work well for all parties. By combining 6 remaining WAC schools, 9 Big West schools, and BYU, you end up with a 16-member conference for non-football sports. To minimize travel, they could be divided into two 8-team divisions; Hawaii and the 7 Big West conferences in southern California would make up one division, and SJSU, Pacific, UC Davis, Idaho, Utah State, BYU, NMSU, and LaTech would make up the other.

For football, the two Big West FCS schools that play football (UC Davis and Cal Poly) would move up to the FBS level to give the conference the required 8 football-playing members to retain FBS status.

If and when LaTech left the new combined conference, they could be replaced with Montana or Sacramento State.

  118. The Big West BETTER be considered. Wahine softball is lost in all the WCC talk as the WCC does NOT field women’s softball and water polo, but the Rainbow Wahine water polo team participates in the MPSF.

The Big West has all of UH’s sports (sans football of course).

For softball, another possibility lies in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference and it is a D1 conference that fields teams like Loyola Marymont and one of the OOC opponents for the Wahine last season in Seattle University.

  119. HawaiiMongoose August 24, 2010 10:53 am

But we be running out of DI schools to invite.

Report that says that Fresno and Nevada will join the MWC in 2011, not 2012!

University sources tell KMJ sports they will leave the WAC after this season, and begin their membership in the MWC in the fall of 2011.

  136. Buffoman August 24, 2010 12:23 pm

Maybe the reason why MWC is not openly accepting USU is that they may be afraid that with USU leaving, they, the MWC could be viewed as “harming the other entities” through their action. With 6 left, the WAC is not dead, with 5, turn off the life support system, tey’re dead. At that point, you have some real pi__ed off folks who did not have anything to loose by suing the heck out of any moving thing associated with the MWC, to the point where even if they (WAC remainders) lost, they cripple the MWC by forcing stays in the court system for a long enough period to possibly hurt their ambitions to secure that AQ status.

Someone made reference to a woman in a song in a previous message. I agree on one thing in that there is nothing more dangerous than an angry woman who has felt betrayed (Tiger Woods?). WAC may stand for Woman Ain’t Caring if they’re kicked one more time.

Bleacher report articles such as the one NYUH referenced is by a fan. They are not journalist, per se, but just people who want to submit an opinion.

  152. A-House August 24, 2010 1:15 pm

    Analysis of WAC:

Whether UH prevails in its attempts to keep the WAC together, it appears forces are in the works, USU discussions in joining the MWC and LaTech wanting to be with C-USA, will doom the WAC unless it invites schools now!

WAC should immediatley begin contacting interested parties and ask them to start the process of moving up to D-1A status with the stipulation that the WAC must admit them to the conference when the moritorium ends or contact D-1A schools to join the WAC with the ultimate goal of having 12 – 16 schools to form 2 divisions for football with a conference championship game. THERE HAS TO BE A PLAN.

If the WAC is unwilling to work along this line of thought, UH should advise the WAC that they will seek independent status ( providing that UH does its own due diligence in indy status and moving all its other sports to another conference ) as soon as everything is in place – which could take 6-months to a year.

One positive factor is that the $5 million exit fee is “history”. The “movers and shakers” downtown can help fund the transition to indy status with their $$ and contacts ( ok, who owes them favors, really big favors!)

If Hinshaw and Donovan are holding unto tiny threads with nothing in writing, a plan, then they should be held accountable for all that transpires form 8/24/2010.

  153. Pomai August 24, 2010 1:21 pm

The more I think about it the more I like the idea, also Bywhoo would like it because they get to keep their TV rights plus they would have some good out of conference teams to schedule. I wonder if JD is looking into this, also like Kazz said it fits our other sports well. New conference “Big WAC”

  154. A-House August 24, 2010 1:28 pm

O-Line not set yet! Are they that good or that bad? What is the best combo in working together? Hope Coach Shaw puts a lot of emphasis on cohesion!

  155. Last I heard the WAC presidents vote on FSU and UNR if they were to leave the WAC for the 2011 fall and 2012 spring seasons.

I cannot see WHY the WAC majority would vote to boot FSU and UNR so quickly… unless something is a-foot?

  156. al August 24, 2010 1:37 pm

unless by some miracle that the hawaii warriors are picked up by the mwc or some new blood is intravenously introduced in the wac, we will become an independent football program.

obviously, securing a conference to park the non-football sports is utmost and foremost. the big west does appear to be a nice place for us if they will have us. the big if for the big west marriage for all intents and purposes lie with our being able to offer some travel incentives. we actually have noteworthy non-football athletic programs that could boost a mid-major conference such as the big west.

the success of such a departure (from trying to salvage the wac and our co-existence with them) is predicated by first securing a conference for all sports sans football. we may loose money overall in this effort with lucrative travel assistance.

because baseball and volleyball hold their own and may provide some positive revenues. the men’s basketball program holds one key to our financial solvency. but, no matter what it is the warrior football program’s success in the win column and the revenues that follow that will still make or break our athletic’s program.

bringing in new converted lower tiered football programs only invites trouble. it weakens the wac product and who’s to say that the next boise state doesn’t use this conference as a stepping stone again. (the texas schools for example)

we will need to depend upon independency. with a lot of hard work an independent schedule is not impossible. many will want to play us for recruiting bragging rights.

    …nuff said.

  157. Shoko August 24, 2010 1:41 pm

Yep, independent is the only way. Does anyone want to go through this again? I sure don’t.

  158. al August 24, 2010 1:44 pm

ahouse…all it will take is one more wac team leaving the fold and the wac is whacked. out of the ball park say “good night my love…1969 anka”.

  159. UH Warrior Football as an independent is appearing more and more like the reality.

Too many rumors, too much speculation of the same, even from mainland media claiming “sources”.

Also looks like the Big West Conference as a new home for all other UH sports seems like the eventual reality with the same general consensus across the country. Also, someone pointed out that while there are a lot of Utah State rumors to the MWC leaking out of Utah, there are some “leaks” of UH’s talks with the Big West out of Manoa.

I can live with this as I have no say in the matter as for me as a fan, a supporter, and an “officer” of a newly formed UH booster club, it ultimately means survival.

  160. RE: future UH recruits and current verbal commits.

For the non football sports, I don’t really see much of a change with how this effects future recruits or curent verbal commitments.

For the recruits of Wahine volleyball, the previous and current WAC outlook wasn’t that great as a volleyball conference and the same can be said for Wahine softball. For softball, you only really had Fresno State and they are in somewhat of a decline considering Margie Wright’s old ways and methods. For volleyball, you kind of had NMSU, but really… c’mon!

I remain ignorant on the matters of men’s basketball and baseball as I do hear the Big West is a step up in baseball (not sure of the teams actually in the Big West).

  161. PONO August 24, 2010 1:52 pm

Here are the school that comprise the Big West:

    Cal Poly Pomona

    Cal State Fullerton

    Cal State Long Beach

    Cal State Northridge

    UC Davis

    UC Irvine

    UC Riverside

    U of Pacific

  162. PONO August 24, 2010 1:53 pm

  168. Unkanesson August 24, 2010 2:02 pm

    Shoko,

I understand the distinction, but I still deplore that our kids are leaving our schools with such poor basic writing (especially spelling and grammar) skills, as well as trends in “media” that are making editors (and, indeed, journalists) endangered species. I’m not talking about brief posts in a blog like this, but more lengthy pieces like that one (in which the writer is given the title “Correspondent” in the by-line).

  169. Buffoman August 24, 2010 2:03 pm

IF UH goes independent this is what they could do to help their scheduling cause. Work with ESPN and make the Hawaii Bowl a part of the equation. Like they were going to do with BYU, the team with the best record will get first shot at the Hawaii Bowl. Only those who “sign up” and include in the document, the promise to play home and home negotiated games would have this. So, while it is true that Navy and Army have the auto matic to the Liberty, what if both have winning records but one is a just a game less than the other but better than UH, BYU and whoever else (of the independents).

This may help scheduling. Just a suggestion. I’m sure the travel issue would be brought up as to why it is not a good enough carrot. But hey, what else is there?

  170. Not an Expert August 24, 2010 2:04 pm

    BYU:

Keep the faith and keep the integrity.

Although the MWC commissioner has swung the tables and from what has transpired I believe that honesty and integrity will eventually be the winner whomever follows certain life rules, religious rules or rules of the universe.

BYU leaders think and pray, realize that you were not jeopardizing the MWC existence and wanted to increase your revenues and stature by going independent. That was viable for BYU but not what the MWC wanted. Thus you looked at avenues and was setting things in motion for that to happen and help the overall teams in the WAC and yourself. The MWC would still have managed to survive and plot their continued poaching and probably would have looked at C-USA to do so. The fox just waiting to poach some chickens when the opportunity arises. C-USA don’t ever let your guard down for Thompson will do anything in his power to make the MWC AQ status.

If BYU realizes the type of leadership they are following they know by virtue of goodness and honesty they will become better off to move and pave a new path. It is time BYU took the reins away from Thompson’s agenda and move on their plan. Do so and the goodness of being honest and trustworthy will make your dreams come to fruition. New doors will open and you will find many schools will assist you because this will show them the opportunity to maybe follow in BYU’s footsteps.

However the most important reason is not to injure the WAC schools who are at the mercy of what Thompson has done. It is dire if you look at the current WAC situation and with your going ahead and assisting the weak, I believe your virtue and honesty will be shined upon more and the respect will be even greater for BYU.

    Just my take and belief.

  171. madeinhawaii August 24, 2010 2:15 pm

For UH to go independent, I think, it will have to raise it’s season ticket prices again… the base prices may have to double.. the contribution/donation end may remain fixed. They will need to attract bigger name programs to sell the empty seats and get more corporate sponsors. For that, they will need $$. I suspect that UH will lose a good number of season ticket holders at first, but if they can provide quality opponents, they will get them back and more.

  172. madeinhawaii August 24, 2010 2:15 pm

The student activity fee will look like a bargain basement bonanza.

  173. posted on the scout network from a person claiming to be a UCSB fan

I posted a few days ago that there was no way UH was going to the WCC as many of you fans hoped. The BWC is better fit for UH. As a UCSB fan I see UH as a positive but I’d have to see the impact of the significant travel costs to see if its truely worthwhile.

Benefits to the BW, what UH brings to the table:

    1. UH brings the # of men’s teams playing Volleyball to 6 so the league could add add men’s vb and gain an auto bid to the NCAA tourney. Currently UH and the other five schools (UOP, UCSB, LB, CSUN & UCI) all play the MPSF.

    2. UH would become the strongest team in one of our core sports, women’s vb. Unfortunately, the BW has been ailing of late being overtaken by all the BCS programs which have invested so much into the sport. Still have some decent teams but is a far cry from 15 years ago when NCs were being won.

    3. UH good in softball, another sport the BW is decent at.

    4. A fun trip for fans once a year to see their team, a nice diversion for the student athletes too.

    Drawbacks to Hawaii:

    1. Travel costs (of course)

    2. Outside of volleyball, pretty mediocre sports program

    3. After a nice run under Riley Wallace men’s hoops is pretty weak

    4. No men’s soccer, another focus sport for the BW.

Overall, as a fan, I would like to see UH in the BWC but with the stipulation that there is a minimum time comittment so that UH would have to pay a substantial buy-out fee if they get an offer to jump ship. I don’t want to see the BW used as a temporary landing spot for all the WAC cast-offs. The BW got screwed over 10 years ago by schools that were football focused. It was smart of the conference to get rid of football altogether and get focused on stability and controling costs. The conference has become stable, albeit somewhat nondescript. UH is welcome and I get that they would jump to the Mtn West as soon as an invite came but if it happens within 5 years, they would need to pay a buy-out to the BW.

  174. expat August 24, 2010 2:19 pm

There are also a few schools that participate in certain WAC sports — like Sac State in Baseball & Gymnastics. Fullerton competes in Gymnastics as does Southern Utab. Northern AZ does swimming & diving.

All the stuff that is going on has an effect on these programs too.

Utah State may ultimately go to the MWC and LaTech to C-USA, but if that happens do SJSU, NMSU, and Idaho also go indy? Even if NMSU football dropped back down to FCS, what about their other programs? They will still need a conference for them. Idaho surely does not want to drop back down. I wonder if Spud State wants to move up?

JD must be spending most of the working day on the phone because no doubt everyone is scrambling right now.

The problem with LaTech moving to C-USA is that they are already at 12 members. If Houston bolted for the MWC then maybe there is room. But why would Houston want to do that? It seems like C-USA is pretty well situated right now. Their travel gets more difficult and more expensive in the MWC. Maybe there is more money potential being in the MWC, but some of that has yet to be negotiated, right? The West division of C-USA is four texas teams and one each in LA and OK. Even if Houston bolted, why would C-USA take LaTech over say North Texas, or even NMSU, which is right down the road from UTEP?

  176. There is a part of me that feels horrible for NMSU and SJSU, BUT…

They are on the continental US and they don’t have geography working against them as it seems to be a popular excuse.

I’ll worry about the University of Hawai’i for now and when we get situated, I’ll worry about the others.

  177. Gonzo August 24, 2010 2:30 pm

If the WAC disintegrates, do Fresno and Nevada still have to pay the exit fee? Does the lawsuit still happen?

If the WAC stays together but for whatever reason Hawaii leaves before the penalty is paid (or a settlement is reached) I would imagine we aren’t entitled to any of that money.

  178. d1島 August 24, 2010 2:34 pm

Did Someone call for a shishi break for the OL starters to be named?

    Indecision Kills…

  180. homey ۩ August 24, 2010 2:38 pm

Technique-wise, did the o-line improve during fall camp? If not…oh oh.

  181. RupertDaStupert August 24, 2010 3:04 pm

I don’t post much as I am a lurker. I have nothing against the WAC commisioner. But I observed he is big in talk and slow in action. If we don’t stop grumbling about the three defectors and start looking for replacements immediately, I mean immediately, Hawaii will hurt the most out of this. If La Tech defects soon, as I know they want to, we’re down to 5 teams. The rest of the 4 will request if not outright ask Hawaii to leave the WAC. The 4 teams cannot affford the expensive travel trips Hawaii causes and they will not want Hawaii as they will see us as burdens. Mr. Benson should now, right now get a Div 2, I mean 2-3 Div 2 teams to join us. Portland State and Weber State may not sound attractive but hey, under Mouse Davis, Portland State kind of shook the football world. Weber State always fields good football teams. Stop waiting for a Div 1 or two Div 1 teams to defect to the WAC. No one wants to come here. Before La Tech takes off, Mr. Benson, do something now!!!!!!! Look what jumping from Div 2 to Div 1 did for Boise State. Made them better. If Mr. Benson doesn’t act soon, the WAC may fold. Or have to fold. I am not a sport expert. Just my observation. All you regular bloggers out there are much much more intelligent than I am and I’m sure will have better answers than I have. Book em Gibbo!

  182. mctruck August 24, 2010 3:19 pm

As a fan, I believe/favor the Big West alignment in all sports and independent in fb.

So far everythings turned out like musical chairs…..I think UH’s brain-thrust have got to put an urgency to these issues so we can lay-it-2-rest and move on….it’s getting too distracting to the entire UH athletic program.

  183. Bstunna2002 August 24, 2010 3:22 pm

Can someone post the info on the camp tonight…thanks

  184. mctruck August 24, 2010 3:25 pm

Further, I like the fact as mentioned before that the BW schools are all in CA, so there’s a big plus in cutting down on travel expenses. Hope UH makes the window of opportunity work in their favor.

    A-House #165:

Excellent to hear that! It’ll be great to see you all again.

  186. McTruck,

The Big West scene in Cali could definitely has some sort of positive effect on our programs that seek the saturated Cali pipline for volleyball, softball, and baseball talent.

  187. whitey August 24, 2010 3:44 pm

yes, we do have conference problems, but we still are in a conference. Imagine if you are Utah or Colorado, who were invited to the PAC 10, but is not guaranteed anything until the Presidnets/Chancellors of the PAC 10 vote on Oct 21st. Right now, there is a campaign to deny entry and it is being led by former chancellor of UCLA. Colorado has major problems wtih the exit fees fromt he Big 12 and it could cost them as much as $9.5-14 mil. Not sure about Utah, but they probably have to pay an exit fee also. But the huge thing is what if you are denied entry on Oct 21st. What are you going to do??? This is reality and not just something to think about.

  188. whitey August 24, 2010 3:50 pm

Keeping and building the WAC is more important than going independent. UH athletics moved to big time because of the WAC, not by being independent. Why go backwards?? Sure, we have major problems right now, but UH is the leader of the WAC and as the leader, it should exert itself to remake the WAC. If your football dream is to play in the big time, independency for UH will relegate them to nothing more than the Aloha Bowl. No big time bowl, period.

  189. Unkanesson August 24, 2010 3:50 pm

To those who clamor for the powers-that-be to do something NOW, I say this:

Just because you aren’t hearing any news, that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing anything. You can be certain that JD and the UH administrators, and Benson and the rest of the WAC AD’s and administrators, are burning up the phone and email lines, busting their okoles trying to come up with the best possible solution(s) for all concerned. I’m just as anxious to see what the resolution turns out to be. I think we all need to understand that the process is playing itself out at its own pace, and while we can exchange our various creative suggestions and ideas, there’s no point in lashing out at the people who are actually doing the work behind the scenes.

  190. whitey August 24, 2010 3:57 pm

One of the things I would like to see is that all the WAC schools agree to field the same men and women sports for WAC play. Any other sports they may have would be played in another conference. If football and basketball are the 2 men sports, that means that the women program would have maybe 5-6 sports which would be equivalent to the men’s scholarship. Whatever sports is selected, all WAC schools will field a team for that designated WAC sport.

  191. whitey August 24, 2010 4:04 pm

Unkanesson, very good point about the administration and WAC office. Things may look bleak, but my hope is that when someone offers to play the WAC teams in other sports and they being from a devout religious school, I assume they they will not lie or try to bs you. True, there may be no legal grounds, but the difference here is that for someone who requires religion to be part of their school, should be accountable for what they say. Just my take on this.

  192. RupertDaStupert August 24, 2010 4:05 pm

Everyone of your comments have great merit. Colorado and Utah have one advantage over Hawaii. Rich, great benefactors to donate tons of money to their sports funds. Hawaii doesn’t have that. We’re quite poor. If La Tech defects and the WAC asks us to leave, we’re too poor to have any leverage to make a big fix. The Big West is a good idea. Not the name value of the Pac 10, Mountain West, or Conference USA but at least we’re in a conference. NOw please don’t throw dirt on me but here’s a real crazy idea. Maybe getting UH Hilo Hawaii, or Chaminade, or Hawaii Pacific, or BYU-Laie to field a football team (I believe all already have baseball and basketball teams). There’s plenty of local talent some heading for Div 1 and 2 teams stateside that may stay home. I believe UH Hilo Hawaii has a stadium. And get them into the WAC. Or Jim Donovan create our own conference. He is a genius and if anyone can do it, he can. UH Manoa, UH Hilo, Portland State, Weber State, Invite some of the Big West teams to join the new conference. Pacific West Conference or PWC. Jim Donovan becomes the PWC commissioner. Or Jim Donovan remains UH athletic director and Bob Wagner or retired Dick Tomey becomes PWC commissioner. Please don’t throw dirt. I am already nuts! Just crazy ideas. But we need to do something. We’re too poor to buy our way into another conference. Book em Gibbo.

  193. whitey August 24, 2010 4:06 pm

dang, talking about religion may have been in back of my mind cause was at the golf shop and the new Ping club is called “Faith”. Sheesh, brain lock.

  194. HNL August 24, 2010 4:07 pm

I think we should stay in the wac, and try to keep it together much as possible.

    1. the buy out money from Fresno and Nevada will help.

    2. we have a hard enough time getting nonconference games as it is now we would have to find 7 more.

    3. When we start scheduling so called body bag games and winning them it will be even harder to get them, not to mention geting them to come here.

There is security in the wac no matter how it’s perceived right now.

  195. whitey August 24, 2010 4:08 pm

Rup, you neva go to the same golf shop as me, did you???? hahahahaaaaa

  196. whitey August 24, 2010 4:11 pm

Finacially, we should play those away $1mil games. What we get to lose??? We not recognized as a major player, so if you want to become one, take the lumps or dish em out and then going get teams that no like play you because you are too good.

  201. RupertDaStupert August 24, 2010 4:26 pm

What is golf Whitey? LOL. I never played a regulation game. Good sport just kidding. If anyone thinks hitting 200-300 yard drives are easy, newcomers try it. Not easy. It takes talent and athletic ability. Just like a college pitcher throwing a 80 mph fastball. not easy. 90 mph fastball? Harder. God given talent. I worry about the WAC even though some of you say we should stay there. My concern is the big defection by Byu, Utah, Wyoming etc way back when left Hawaii in the dark. None of them wanted Hawaii to tag along. My question is we may want the WAC but will the WAC want us? More defections, not one conference asked us to join them. No one ever will. And the WAC may not want us either. Agreed with those of you who say we should stay in the WAC. But will the WAC want us? Not disagreeing with those who say stop criticizing the commissioner, the brain trusts of the WAC members as they may be working hard now to fix things. I hope your right. It would be wonderful! Book em Macko. Beat USC!

  208. roysan16 August 24, 2010 5:12 pm

    playa,

I saw your response in yesterday’s post. You seemed to be angered by the satire I wrote in #115. That’s great. I couldn’t be happier. For I’m seeing first hand of what I wrote having an effect on you, especially since you introduced yourself as being a current Warrior football player. Please except the fact I wanted you to be angered. I wanted to light a fire under you, your team mates and coaches. So get that straight. Best you bottle this anger, though, and uncork it on the field in the upcoming season.

  226. A lot can happen in a year.

One year ago, I remember walking in the Stan Sheriff Center with a big smile on my face. It was the Rainbow Wahine vs Western Michigan on the opening night of Wahine volleyball and officially the opening night of the 2010 UH Sports Fall Season.

I remember Jim Donovan and Virginia Hinshaw were both at Gate A greeting the fans as they poured in. I remember vividly Jim Donovan commentating on my shirt. It was a plain green UA shirt with “HAWAII” arched on the front.

As me and my friends sat down, there was a ceremony to bless the new tera-flex floor paid for by Chevron. The blessing came in the form of two Hawaiian chants inviting all of different cultures and backgrounds to come together. I got chicken skin right there as I looked around just emersed in the pride that is always evident when the Rainbow Wahine play. There is no doubt we have the best volleyball atmosphere in the nation.

I started to think of what the 2009 fall and 2010 spring seasons would bring. UH football was about to celebrate it’s 100th year of existance, the Warrior volleyball team had a new coach as well as the Rainbow Wahine b-ballers, etc… More and more, emotion came over me as I was just happy to be there in person to take it all in. I thought to myself then, “I love being here, I love the games, I love this university, I love this state”.

Fast forward to last week. My world and the worlds of others got flipped upside down. As soon as we were all enjoying the pride of another NCAA Final Four appearance by the Wahine volleyball team, a WAC championship in baseball and softball, not to mention a stellar season for the Rainbow Wahine softball team, the reality of pondering the future of all our sports programs came into question like never before.

I am NOT ashamed to say some tears of anger and frustration were shed on my behalf last week because it’s the truth. This has become such a big part of me for the past 5 years, I cannot walk with my head held too high as if nothing happened. I can only imagine what it was like for those that have put most of their lives into representing the Green and White.

With that being said, we are coming up on another season. The dawning of a new season to celebrate the young men and women that make up our Warriors and our Rainbow Wahine is upon us

I URGE all UH fans to join in more than ever. We will NOT go quietly into the night! We’re gonna live on!

Warriors do not surrender without a fight.

My take on the possible legal action against Fresno St and Nevada it should be pursued as this a WAC initiated civil action for breach of contract; not an individual action by UH against both teams. Yes, UH is part of the reamining 6 schools and even if UH voted against this action, it’s still 5 – 1.

Each school President understood and agreed to the “pact”; Nevada not signing is not going to be a cause for lesser punishment.

    Raider QB Update:

    – Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski will see considerable action in the last two preseason games, although Cable would not commit as to whether he would go in as No. 2 or No. 3.

Apparently, Gradkowski is off the injury list. Really doesn’t look promising for Colt at the #4 position. If Gradkowski is back without any lingering problems, the Raiders could cut Colt loose any day now. 🙁

All this talk about the WAC’s future is a little depressing. In retrospect, Karl Benson could’ve teamed up with ESPN to help strengthen the WAC’s position. ESPN loses when the WAC loses and disintegrates. With BYU in hand, maybe ESPN could’ve provided sufficient incentive to bring Boise, Fresno, and Nevada back…and maybe add UNLV and San Diego St. Maybe it’s still not too late to work with ESPN to help broker a deal.

  252. Curt August 24, 2010 7:38 pm

These challenges are opportunities to excel. And boy, what a challenge it is. So lets pull together and turn this thing around.

Are you ready for some volleyball?

I worry about Hawaii’s history against USC. The closest game was 21-5 when Charles White was the Heisman Trophy winner and John Robinson was the coach. Since then, it’s been only blowouts. Is this year different? I don’t know. On the plus side is that USC lost 4 games last year. To Washington, Oregon, Stanford, and Arizona. They also played close games against Oregon St. and Arizona State which they won. Maybe the rest of the Pac 10 is catchng up with USC and their overwhelming talent level has come down a little bit. Maybe they don’t have the game breakers like Reggie Bush, Dwayne Jarret, Rivers, Cushing,

Maualuga, Leinart, Sanchez, and Palmer, etc. like they used to. No question they still have 4 and 5 star talent, but that’s on paper. Nobody at USC is projected to be a first team All American, maybe not even a second team All American. Maybe UH get chance if everything falls into place. We will have to win the turnover battle and not give up big plays. I feel good that this Hawaii team will be much better than last year. I’m concerned that Hawaii has gotten of to slow starts in previous years, but I think the coaches know that. This is a real test, but I will say that Hawaii pulls it out by a field goal in a very entertaining game, 31-28 and the guy that kicks it is Tyler Hadden. Let’s pray!

  254. Slugger August 24, 2010 7:43 pm

Possibly no UH-USC game for Oceanic customers? Probably they’ll agree at the last minute and everything will be hunky-dory, but, I’m glad I have Dish Network. 😀

  257. sportsbow August 24, 2010 7:57 pm

How about C-USA for football only and play in the Big West Conference for other sports.

On the C-USA board, so far, all the posters like the idea of having Hawaii as a football only member if Houston goes to the MWC.

I think it can work. Middle of the schedule will be filled. It will take longer and cost more for the team to travel there but, that’s much easier to do then to fill in the middle of the schedule every year if UH decide to go Independent.

What you folks think? Oh yeah! We’ll be in the same division with SMU if this can happen.

#248- Yeah- time to pray for Colt (as if we aren’t already).

“Bruce Gradkowski will get significant time in the last two games. This does not bode well for Colt Brennan seeing additional action.”

  259. al August 24, 2010 8:24 pm

lizk…this is no surprise. barring another injury or either gradkowski/boller stinking it up colt will hopefully get picked up on the practice squad. sort of like the scout team. he’ll get a lot of reps then and could open some eyes then.

  260. Curt August 24, 2010 8:42 pm

    sportsbow,

Very interesting idea. That definitely sounds better than going independent. But would the MWC raid Conf USA? I hear the commissioners are buddies. I wonder how Karl Benson and Craig Thompson got along before? Can’t be too good now that’s for sure. Thompson’s got balls. He was willing to sink a conference just to keep BYU in the fold. He’s cold.

  261. Curt August 24, 2010 8:45 pm

Karl Benson was probably too nice. Unfortunately, he got ate up by Craig da Croc.

  262. Curt August 24, 2010 8:48 pm

Of course, when you have friends like those in Reno and Fresno, who needs enemies?

  263. HawaiiMongoose August 24, 2010 8:52 pm

Milton Glick and John Welty. Presidents of Nevada and Fresno State. The gentlemen who put the knife in our collective backs.

  264. Curt August 24, 2010 8:54 pm

    sportsbow,

Did you pass the idea over to JD?

  265. Curt August 24, 2010 8:56 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

Yup. Those were not pats in back that we got from Glick and Welty; they’re knife wounds!

  266. al August 24, 2010 9:00 pm

i don’t think that benson and thompson are pals. benson stands to lose his $500k annual salary.

  267. Unkanesson August 24, 2010 9:00 pm

If SC’s front 7 are comparable to Georgia’s Sugar Bowl team, we certainly will have our work cut out for us. But there are 3 factors that should enable us to handle it better:

    1. Our current head coach was there and saw what happened. Hopefully, some lessons were learned.

    2. While our current QB isn’t the slinger Colt was, he is a much better scrambler and may be able to escape the rush better.

    3. Watching that Sugar Bowl game, I got the distinct impression that JJ was detached and not as involved in the game as usual. It seemed like he didn’t make much of an effort to find ways to negate the rush. Colt was a sitting duck. I think our motivation, both players and coaches, is going to be very different for this game, and I’m hopeful we’ll be more creative in devising ways to counter what may well be something of a physical mismatch.

  268. Curt August 24, 2010 9:01 pm

I e-mailed Karl Benson earlier about the importance of the ESPN alliance. Of course, the horses are out of the barn already. Come back horsey horsey. Please horsey horsey. Yes, this is called groveling. As a husband, I’m expert at it.

  269. al August 24, 2010 9:01 pm

isn’t it weird that there is no news regarding the wac for over 72 hours?

in this case no news is bad news.

I truly thought the WB meant we were all ohana. Three years ago, Rupert described his plight as a homeless veteran. Then he disappeared for 3 years. Now he is back. And I hope his situation has improved.I took a nap this afternoon and missed this. I saw Rupert’s earlier post and recalled thinking I haven’t seen him a long time, but forgot about his last situation when he posted here often.

<b<I hope things are better, RupertDaStupert!

…and thank you, gigi-hawaii. We have a lot of new bloggers here who are not aware of the past associations formed here in the blog. Some of us may say unusual and seemingly off the wall things 🙄 –especially those originally depicted in the Tsai-ko Group Caricature of early 2007…

DPK, Jason/homey, Al, gigi-hawaii, Garret, Rasu Begasu, prideperiod, Bulla, ST, Addahknowjoe, SteveM/[FloridaTed], mctruck/brew808, [LTUHF], (j)James, and WreckinEyez…

associations and friendships run deeper here than most other blogs … and the group is still growing. 🙂

Thanks for being my blog friends..maybe, maybe…..someday I will be able to to meet inperson with you all, alas time moves just too swiftly as a few bloggers have been laid to rest and in that regard my heart is heavy with regrets.

Had fun at Coach Mack’s Man-Fan Clinic.

Learned a lot of how they prepare for a game

    day by day breakdown

We are all in His hands.

Wherever Colt goes- he is on his path and we get to make new friends along the way.

#264- I think Hawaii was collateral damage. The other school were just looking out for #1.

Nice to hear about the man camp. The Ladies one was awesome last year. It solidified my respect for our coaches/teachers and I came away feeling a sense of balance – and made new friends along the way!

  279. Bstunna2002 August 24, 2010 10:21 pm

The Man Clinic was a great experience it gave me alot better insight as to just how much preparation goes into each game I have a new found respect for the hard work the coaches and players put in…plus I went through receiving drills with Bradley,Salas,Pilares and Bright…it was good fun

  281. Hoohiki August 24, 2010 10:34 pm

Hard not to get depressed over the UH and WAC situation. I hope, BYU or JD makes a decision soon and not let another entity create another negative circumstance for us. Nevertheless, I wish the Warriors the best against USC! PPV for us on Maui is only $210.

On a more positive note, “Good luck to the Waipio team against Ohio!” Imua, Gambatte, Geev’um, etc!

    LLWS Hawaii champions:

Little League 2 West Oahu, Waipio

Junior League 4 Pearl City, Aiea, Aiea, PearlCity

    Big League 0

    Senior League 1 Hilo

I noticed that Chinese-Taipei owns the LL and this year, the champions of the Junior, Big, and Senior Leagues are from International Teams, including Chinese Taipei, again. If Waipio, doesn’t win it all, I’m sure hoping that the US gets the LLWS Championships. No matter what, LLWS is always such a feel good story with kids playing, volunteers volunteering and coaches coaching for the love of the game, their region, state, and country.

  282. ali0482 August 24, 2010 10:44 pm

On the other hand, it would be kind of fun for the WAC to sue the presidents of Fresno State and Nevada. Essentially, both are board members of the WAC. They have access to the finances and other WAC information. To use such information for their own benefit, breaking their responsibility to the league, well, that makes them liable.

  283. sportsbow August 24, 2010 11:01 pm

Still get chance for the MWC or what.

All ego? You think so. Look at the archives for the last three years there’s not one piece of personal information about myself that I’ve emitted. This is in contrast to others that continuously go out of their way to tell the blog their everyday movements. I don’t anchor the blog, hog the conversation or even try to draw attention to myself. What I do is open my mouth and not suppress my emotions, mostly about UH football. Is that bad? Look back further in the archives and you’ll see that I’m not afraid to speak up. Some of the actions of Coach Mack I’ve condemned, like for example the role mel had in leading the team, his image, how he would elevated his players and coaches to no end, and how he would tip his hand to the opposing teams during the Call the Coach Shows. Trust me in doing so I exercised my prerogative of wanting a better team and not exercising as what you might construe as exercising my ego.

I think your reaction to what I wrote, or the manner in which I write, sways other from speaking up, which I think isn’t a good thing. But I guess for a blog that yearns in being esoteric in how they perceive things it might.

But don’t worry about me jack for I’m no treat to this blog as I don’t post as much as I used to.

  294. Garret (traveling) August 25, 2010 5:13 am

The Salt Lake Tribune posted the text of the loyalty agreement for the WAC. It sure looks to me that only $5 million total is owed by Fresno/Nevada since it is clear that once a school left the WAC no other school would owe the WAC any money if they left.

    6. In the event that any current WAC member, (except Louisiana Tech or Boise State), or BYU leaves the WAC in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 5 herein, the terms of this resolution are terminated.

  295. Garret (traveling) August 25, 2010 5:14 am

We already know that La Tech wants out of the WAC…it is interesting to read what the Louisiana media thinks about the WAC.

“It’s hard to see any scenario where this isn’t terrible news for Louisiana Tech,” said Monroe News-Star columnist Ethan Conley. “The WAC is left with Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State. Or as the cool kids are calling it, ‘The Absolute Worst Conference In The Nation.’”

Roysan16 ~ I’m just curious…and I don’t want to get into a pi$$ing contest over this…but do you not expect backlash from things that you have posted.

I read your satirical post, and found it to be amusing. Others beg to differ, perhaps because they looked at it as being inflammatory. Jack seems to think so. Playa took offense as well. Me?…it prompted me to post my 56-13 score!

I’m not saying you should change your style. It defines who you are, no matter what name you choose. Say whatever you like, but don’t get so angry when others take offense. That’s life, we’ll all get over it.

With everyone posting various scenarios re conference/indepence possibilities, I would like to see UH in the WAC with 14 teams divided into two divisions. Teams to be added could be all the aforementioned teams (UTSA, NTSU, etc) and possibly Utah and Colorado if their admittance to the PAC-10 fails. We could also have a conference championship game with the Hawaii Bowl as an added attraction.

This afternoon I looked at Mr. Woods’s meeting with the press right now and I need to say that he did appear rather remorseful that he and his wife were now formally divorced. This was really the most that I have ever heard him mention his marriage to his now ex-wife Elin Nordegren and despite the fact that he did not go into particular details, he made it incredibly clear that he was the 1 that messed everything up and sincerely regrets what he has done to his loved ones. Now that matters are completed with his divorce proceeding, I’m curious when or if Mr. Tiger Woods will regain the form that us golf fans have come accustomed to watching. After watching him play so poorly this year, I actually have anxieties that we may well by no means see that dominating golf figure once again. I in fact think that this will, by far, be the roughest problem that he will have had faced in his expert golfing profession. Just feel, this could possibly be the point in Mr. Woods’s profession where he has attained his peak and it’s only straight down from here. He’s thirty five now, and athlete’s skills commonly commence to diminish as soon as they hit their mid-thirties. It really is a wonder that he still has his number one world ranking still, one would’ve figured that Mickelson might have taken it by now but he apparently has some condition that is impacting his golf game.
