Stauber to UCLA
It’s been out there on social media a while ago but I been waiting for official word from Sealy since June.
Former Wahine setter Monica Stauber had committed to Santa Clara originally but when Becca Strehlow transferred after spring from UCLA to Pepperdine (although nothing from pepperdine yet) it opened up a spot with the Bruins.
Sealy said it happened very quickly. kind of bang-bang and fell into place. She’ll be competing for playing time with Moenoa.

She heard the footsteps of Tayler Higgins and was headed down on the depth chart anyway so good move on her part.
Come on LC really????I don’t think UCLA is a step down from UH. Maybe just the opposite. I like Monica and feel she should have played more.

Well at least one member of last years team will coming back to the Stan in another uniform. Monica is a very good setter and will help UCLA. I hope the fans give her a warm welcome.

I think she can help UCLA. It will be interesting since both she and Moenoa will be juniors.
2. It likely got buried on another thread but Croson is on Arizona’s roster. Hasn’t been given a release so likely a redshirt year. Don’t know if Rubio would bring a redshirt unless they need the practice players. We might see her first week of the season.
I am wondering what kind of plans Dave has for Kyra Goodman.Is he planning on trying to red-shirt Higgins ?
Rumors are Goodman passed on club this year because of a injury but not sure how true that is because it came out of VT.
Players who pass on last year of club usually do so to attend summer sessions at their new school and I understand that she is enrolled at UH.
One thing about Dave is that you never know what is going on in that mind of his so everything is a guessing game for the fans.
2. WD, think you misunderstood LC. I agree with him that Higgins, even before fall practice begins, likely is No. 2 on the depth chart. This is a great move on her part and I think a better one than if she had gone to Santa Clara, as was the initial plan.
hey Cindy, off topic a bit. but when will we see an article about the wahine in the star advertiser? just curious i always run to the sports section hoping for something. can you tell me anything?
5. LC don’t know the plans yet. likely won’t until first day of practice Aug. 10 and see who all is in camp.
But I don’t think the plan is to redshirt Higgins.
and don’t know about Goodman. She could have easily played club and then come for second session. makes sense that she is here now for summer school and open gym.
I agree with Cindy, I also highly doubt that Higgins will redshirt. Shoji wants her to have valuable playing time to get her ready for next year. They also can use her great serve in spots.
As far as redshirting, the more interesting question would be if Keani Passi still going to redshirt. Passi had planned to redshirt this season and maybe have a scholarship for next season. This was before Croson transferred, and now an OH position and scholarship has opened up for this Fall.

Sorry this is off topic but Laguna Beach Volleyball Club updated their college commitments and Kendra Koelsch is confirmed to Hawaii. I really hope she does play indoors as well. Funny how some responses bash Volley Talk’s validity. Yet for myself, there has been numerous postings regarding UH and other schools and coaching movement or players or incoming players that was posted long before anywhere else, that has turned out to be factual.
As of recent years, there are legitimate coaches on all levels that post on VT that has first hand knowledge of various postings. Even Tawa of PrepVB posts regularly as does Rich Kern who has a very respected website that tracks players and scholarships especially connected with Nebraska.
It’s easy to bash VT but of late it has become a source for some coaches and club coaches. Not to mention players looking for schools. sometimes when people tlk S**t about a source, they are doing it out of envy and negativity.

11. I know she is going to sand but I’m just hoping she will play indoors as well. If Guinasso does play both and stays with both, it will help both programs. I really do hope the new indoors coach after Shoji isn’t like Mick Haley and allows a few players to play both and not just kick them off.

Sealy got a good solid player who has seen some quality sub-time and made good situational subbing payoff for Coach Dave. I know UCLA plays a different game but he surely can give her the quality pt she was looking for in a program that is in a higher profile league than UH. And with a coach who is going to be around for her whole career for sure. Good luck, Monica, thanks for the time you were a wahine and best of luck in your new school and future vb. On the Kendra Koelsch matter, because it was posted on Kara Hill’s site that she’s sand only, does that indicate that she’s receiving a sand scholarship? If that’s the case, if the NCAA rules from two years back hasn’t change, she can’t play indoors for two Fall seasons. I can’t imagine a quality player like her not getting a scholarship at a D1 school. I doubt it very much if she’s walking on. Cindy it would please us diehards a bunch if you would ask Scott Wong if a sand scholarship was offered to Koelsch.
Next, now Gianna Guinasso I believe is walking on, thus allowing her to play both.
I’m don’t bash VT but I do take others’ post from there with some skepticism. there’s some wild rumors out there and sometimes I think they get thrown out there so that someone who knows the truth will try to set the record straight.
I give a lot of credence to Rick Kern, too
You folks know my feelings on counting scholarships. It’s between the coach and player as to whether they are on one or not.
Not sure how many sand scholarships UH is being allowed to fund. it was 3 two years ago, 4 last season. The eventual max will be 6. unless something drastically changes, it will never be a ‘fully funded NCAA sport’ meaning there will not be 10 full scholarships for the 5 pairs that play.
At the moment, the indoor roster has 18 players. That’s the max Shoji likes to carry, although he had 20 last season including the redshirts.
There are options other than athletic scholarships out there for players. Some are academic. Believe Jonas Umlauft was on full academic scholarship, leaving the 4.5 for the rest of the team.
some players could be on academic scholarship, which allow them to walk-on for both teams.
But i will ask Wong about Koelsch and Guinasso.

UH desperately needs to find an answer at opposite, someone with consistency.
I think senior Goodman has the edge. Manu Olevao got raves playing for USAV as well.
with UH’s system where the lefts hit left twice, right once, and the right hits twice on the right, left once UH has a lot of options, including Kastl.
Passi does have a redshirt year. She comes out of CSI, which has a great reputation for developing players but JC and DI a big step.
And then there’s Nikki Taylor. 6-3 who sat out high school season. Not sure where she plays into the mix.
Just because you don’t believe something said on VT that doesn’t translate to bashing.
I’ve heard that Koelsch is only playing sand and is only interested in playing sand. And, on that same note, also heard that SW is working toward a “sand only” roster as soon as 2015 and the 2013 roster will have minimal indoor players, which may not be part of the travel team. There’s too much conflict between the two because of the indoor spring season. Personally, I like a “sand only” roster when a coach is involved in both indoor and sand as SW is. Because indoor has a pretty heavy Spring season as far as practices/work outs, etc it becomes an issue when a coach is forced to divide their time between the two sports. As far as the 2013 sand season, SW was absent from several practices to be with the indoor team — as head coach of the sand team, that should have been his priority. Another area that should be improved on.
Well when Shoji retires scott may become sand only coach ( also then they up the salary for that position.
I’m happy for Stauber although I can’t see her beating out Moenoa for a starting spot, unless UCLA wants to try a 6- 2 offense with all those tall girls they have to play front row for the 5′ 9 moenoa and 5′ 8 Stauber.

Cindy is August 10th the first day schools are allowed to practice? Starting on a Saturday seems a little bit odd to me
24. schools are limited to the number of practices and can adjust to fit their needs. based on their first match and other factors. originally i thought UH’s was starting the day after the last camp but the last camp ends Aug. 4. Saturday was odd to me as well. Seems like it has usually been on a Tuesday but the year Ferrell came in it was a Saturday, with the team spending the night before in the arena. if I’m remembering correctly.

someone said that Stauber should have gone to Santa Clara if she wanted more playing time since she wasn’t going to beat out Moenoa.
she doesn’t have to beat out Moenoa if they used the system used last season. Moenoa and Strehlow shared time last season, Moenoa playing in 65 sets, Strehlow 64. Moenoa had 670 assists, Strehlo 665.
With Moenoa and Staber both about 5-8 I can see them running a 6-2 as someone else mentioned.
UCLA has now posted its roster, which includes Stauber. The have a 5-11 freshman setter named Jordan Robbins.
Cindy — last year’s split time between Moenoa and Strehlow wasn’t really the intended “system.” they did not run a 6-2. neither player was consistent enough to take the starting spot completely over the other. i would think that Sealy would want to avoid that kind of a situation again, and have one full-time starter … with a back setter perhaps coming in for the occasional double-sub.
If Moenoa wasn’t all that good to secure the spot and beat out Strehlow, who’s to say Stauber can’t beat her out or at least share setting duties?
27. I know it was not a 6-2, they split playing time. was just saying that they might consider a 6-2, as someone else had suggested on another thread. he’s got height at the other positions.
Cindy what you did say was “she doesn’t have to beat out Moenoa if they used the system used last season”… Cubicle just pointed out that there was no “system” per se… and that playing time was based on performance. But I agree a 6-2 is possible for consideration.
