Today is the first time the Warriors will conduct both morning and afternoon practices. But in keeping with the theme of this training camp — learn but don’t burn — technique more than contact will be emphasized. Expect the afternoon session to focus mostly on special teams.
The Warriors managed to run sensible one-on-one drills between the linemen. The rule — which is practical for game purposes — is that nobody hits the ground.

College football might run the most diverse offenses and defenses, but when it comes to rules, the pros set the tone. As a safety measure, the NFL was the first to eliminate the wedge on kick returns. Colleges now need to follow the NFL’s lead in eliminating tripping the ball-carrier. The technique is dangerous for both the ball-carrier and the defender. Remember that play where UH wideout Rodney Bradley suffered a two leg fractures when he was tripped by an Idaho defender? That play is legal in NCAA football.

The first event I ever covered for The Advertiser was a canoe race in Waikiki. Couldn’t find parking, so I showed up late. I was bummed. Then eight hours later, with blisters forming on my shoulders, I was bummed for a different reason.
When it comes to training camp. I try to (purposely) skip the first half hour. Unlike the regular season, when I’m inadvertently late, oh, 50 times or so.
Re: Tripping.
When you’re a little kid playing backyard football, and the big kid — and there’s always one really big kid — comes your way, well, by any means necessary. Not so in college football.

This is one of the few times I’ve been anxious for a preseason game. It will be kind of fun to see what he can do.
Whatever your opinion of him as a player, he’s still the same cool guy, at least to the media. He called the other day, and he’s still the same Colt.
That’s the good thing about Hawaii guys. They’re rooted. Samson Satele, Vince Manuwai, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Brashton Satele, Aaron Kia, Ray Hisatake, Davone Bess … the list goes on. It’s nice when guys reach the big time but don’t act big time.

We’re actually starting to see the long-term impact of FieldTurf now.
On the one hand, it’s easy to maintain and it apparently reduces injuries.
On the other hand, it requires a lower crown — if there’s a crown at all — which means it takes extra effort to clean.

The cost to the Hawai`i taxpayers after the NFL kicks in its share will be around one million dollars.
The cost to build a new stadium -a basic facility without any fancy accoutrements – will be around $250 million. A fancy-schmancy facility would cost upwards of $400 million. Since nearly $60 million in upgrades are already committed and another $25 to 30 million will start down the pipeline in the next fiscal year, the true cost of a new basic stadium would be closer to $350 million. Fancy-schmancy upwards of $500 million.
And the basic one wouldn’t even be open for the first play until 2016 at the earliest – and more likely in 2018. The turf is at the end of its lifespan so it has to be replaced no matter what.

I saw that you were again selected for the Biletnikoff watch list honoring the top WR in college football. This year the list included 51 players, with three from the WAC. Last year you were also nominated for the watch list. Congratulation. Hope you have a prolific year and the team does well. I am surprised, though, nobody in this town or the media to my knowledged has acknowledged you being honored. What’s was funny is that I saw that the Boise site did (or mentioned that you were included on the list, and that was 24 hours ago). Oh well, good luck.

DOC…#20…Only thing is, when we did research on several 50,000 seat facilities in other states at other universities which also were used as multi-purpose facilities (i.e. concerts, state dinners, community functions, even private parties) the design-build costs for those facilities were much, much lower. Projects came in under budget, and were completed within 2 years. Some of these stadiums rival some NFL facilities and from the videos and pics we saw of the facilities, they were georgeous. Now, many of these facilities were built using public-private contracts and agreements which made a difference but still, it isn’t out of the possibilities. We need to look at upgrading Aloha Stadium tremendously and when you really look at what needs to be done to Aloha Stadium to make it like some of these other facilities (i.e. luxury boxes, meeting rooms, convention type spaces for large parties, concert/event venue facilities, restroom upgrades, electronics upgrades, press box upgrades, handicapped/disability upgrades, etc.) as well as the necessity to ensure that the aging steel facility is structurally sound (which tests indicate it still currently is)..the costs will run into the hundreds of millions of dollars anyway. So the question becomes, do we spend 300 – 500 million to upgrade the current Aloha Stadium…or work towards spending that money on something more modern and brand new that will last (with preventative maintenance and care) for decades???
Granted, in Hawaii, things will be different and costs are generally higher. There are generally large cost overruns and delays. That is why these things need to be addressed at its core. Why do these overruns occur and why are costs so much higher here than on the mainland? Is it labor costs? material costs?

Tripping, while “legal” in NCAA football is a cowardly act, in ANY sport for that matter.
Rodney Bradley was tripped and got his leg broken, but that was a year ago in Moscow. This year, Idaho comes to Halawa.
Duke Aiona said something on the Leahey and Leahey show back in 2007 that got me pretty worked up.
Basically he said that until “they” (referring to UH) can show they can sell out or come close to selling out every home game, the current state of Aloha Stadium is suitable and that looking to invest in upwards of 200 million to rennovate the stadium to extend it’s life or even considering a new facility is not fiscally responsible.
Well, fast forward to today and we are seeing SOME rennovations,but still…
That was his stance in 2007, don’t know what it is today.
I know it would cost a lot more money, but the stadium would make so much more money than it currently makes.
-They can make box seats which they can sell to the companies. You can sell them by event, by the season, or by the year. You can have 1 year contracts, 3 year, 5 year, etc.
– Make the stadium friendly to the older people. We all know that the Hawaii fan base isn’t getting younger.
– Make the stadium with easy entrance and exits and lots of parking.
-They need to make a stadium that’s closer to the school, so there is more student participation. There isn’t any place to put it, but you need to find some place.
– More bathrooms.
– Owned by the university so they can get the revenue.
– Get public opinion of what should be included/not included in the design.
– Let the students design the stadium. The architecture school can design, business school can come up with the business plans for concessions, engineers for the ramps/grading/site/etc. Make the students feel proud of the stadium they helped to build. Of course the professors and other professionals are going to oversee and correct, but the students will know that they had a hand in building it. Saves a lot of money.
I remember when I was working for the Harbors division I planned out the site for that fishing pier. The one by Zippy’s on Nimitz. My bosses spruced up my drawing and everything, but I knew I had a hand it developing the plans. I had to call all the fish markets and ask if they wanted to be a part of it and how big a lot they needed. It was a great experience and fun.

Unless the money is there, along with the land deals, agreements with UH on money dispersements, etc. This was the best route. We may not agree with it coming from a fans pov, but at least something is being addressed.
It’s still a big mess with no real progress towards what really should be happening, but how often does that happen out here?
Maybe Disney would like to spearhead the stadium project? Tie it in with their L.A. outlet park, Bring back the Rams to Los Angeles and Make the Hawaii Stadium there offseason training facility.

I recall that Aiona had advocated a stadium at UH – 40,000 max capacity as we seldom needed a 50,000 capacity – that only the Pro Bowl people wanted that type of capacity.

It is so ironic that I live just a few blocks from the stadium, but have been there only twice — once to my daughter’s high school graduation, and once to the UH Spring Football Scrimmage.
Both times were negative experiences for me. No hand rails so hard time getting downstairs. And then it rained. Oh, boy!

I believe that UH will give USC some serious competition. It definitely won’t be lopsided.
Speaking as a former UH architecture student I have to say that it would be foolish to involve UH students in any substantive way in the design or engineering of a new stadium. Stadium architecture is highly specialized with only a few firms nationally really doing that kind of work. I doubt any firms in Hawaii would have the design expertise to successfully pull off a job like that.
Involving students in terms of having internships, etc. would be a good idea — but nothing more formal than that. You just don’t know enough while in school (either on the engineering side or the design side) to do that kind of work. That is why engineers and architects have to be professionally licensed — and it usually takes years after graduation until someone passes their licensing exams. It isn’t like you can get the students to just do the drawings, etc. They do not do production work in school on that kind of level — and where would they find the time? They already work hard enough. You also don’t really learn how to do working drawings until you are out in the real world.
There could be interesting ways to structure student involvement — but it would be for enrichment purposes. No money would be saved.

Build a stadium with H-1 running under the playing surface and multi-level parking structures with a new interchange for cars going directly into and out of parking levels.

maybe engineers and architects no can, but UH get TIM, KCC get culinary, HCC get automotive and electrical – maybe some one can create a “internship program” that will allow seniors to take a 6 month or 12 month course, just like practice teaching, as a mandatory requirement to graduation.
I know KCC has a semester program for culinary where student can intern for “grade” or “pay” in their final year of the program. Unfortunately, KCC does not provide “employment services” or match graduates with prospective employers.

The season is almost upon us and thus the rise of UH sports…the anticipation…the hope…no fear. For those unabashed fans of ultimate positivity like me, it is without a doubt, going to be a great year! It always is for me and fans like me. It always will be. It’s in our hearts.
The facts, the truths, the dares…they don’t matter. For we foresee the best for all the athletes, the school and the state. The dream is always of the best scenario and why not? It doesn’t always come out the way we want, but we always believe and that’s the beauty of having a heart, loyal to a fault and true to itself.
Although there is always the need for differing opinions to check and balance each other, the belief in the best of all outcomes is the possibility of a dream come true. Of course there is much more to life than sports…much, much more, but sports can transcend who you are and where you’re from. It is a representation and defines your regional pride. In a way, it is a display of your enthusiasm for life.
I am thankful for this blog. It is informative, educational, humorous and for the most part linked by the pulse of a common positive thread of hope. It is made up of the collective dreams for the best. The beat of the blog will always come from the heart.

I understand your point, but you also know that most “licensed” trades have people who are not licensed doing the job. The only thing the license does it assign blame. I don’t know much about architecture, but in law, engineering, etc the interns/non-licensed people do the work and the licensed person looks the work over and approves it. That is what I was thinking the students could do. The professionals tell them their ideas and the students give them drafts. Where do the students find the time? I don’t know about any other degree, but in engineering we had a senior project.
I’m not saying the students should do the work, I just want the students to feel proud of the stadium and being a student at UH. One way would be to get really involved in the planning, design, building of a new stadium.
That is one grand plan. A stadium over a freeway would probably not be feasible, and that would involve even more stair climbing then the current stadium. I do like the out-of-the-box thinking though.

Once upon a time, someone did propose a new stadium under UH-control…. at UH West Oahu. Everyone screamed that they wouldn’t drive out there…. We could catch the rail… One of the challenges for Public-Private partnership to re-develop Aloha Stadium is that I think under the original agreement during the land transfer with the Navy, there were restrictions on land ownership.

RE: #104 Stadium over freeway
Last month on Mercer Island, Washington, I attended a pre-wedding picnic at a large park with two baseball fields. It was only afterwards that someone pointed out that park was built over a freeway “tunnel”. No unsightly 8 lane freeway on the island connecting to the mainland. No wonder there was a short steep road to the park…I thought it was a natural hill.
So, I can visualize a stadium and upper level over the H-1 at University. It’ll be at around the same level as the Dole street Law school and dorms. There will be a ton of engineering and logistical challenges to overcome though.
I think people WOULD drive out to Manoa if there was a stadium there, I still don’t think it would work for traffic reasons and the simple FACT that the infrastructure of the roads and the corresponding highway exits would make for a REAL traffic and accident nightmare.
If people thought Aloha Stadium’s traffic situation is bad, just wait for that line of cars attempting to make that circular ONE LANE University Ave exit off H1 or trying to leave the campus through Dole.
Anyone can think big, but it takes REAL leadership and money to make it happen and it takes MORE sense to know when to back off an idea.
Wassup Doc, I believe shed some light on what is transpiring with the land swap at Aloha Stadium which includes OHA – one ting fo shewa, stay complicated cauz get so many peeps involved – but main ting dey stay talking.

Landsacping – maybe we get UH fans who own landscape businesses that are willing to donate time, plants, etc to make the area look real nice – good tax deduction and NO one can challege them as the final product is there for all to see.
Entire on-off ramps system at or near University Ave must be changed – dats all part of the plan. For example, DH bound traffic to the parking structure will take an off-ramp to a long loop to the top of the parking lot and work their way down. Ewa bound traffic will do the same, but have their own network of lanes into the structure. Maybe reverse the exit so cars will go the opposite direction from entry. All the while, traffic filling in from University and King will have their own entry/exit points.

the miracle by God lives in young Kea Rodrigues. the 14 year old who was found under water, without breath, and lungs filled with the chilling waters of an oregon river has been on the road to recovery. about a week and a half ago he was taken off life support and last week spoke at a press conference. what a miracle!
the road to recovery is long but “hope springs eternal” in the miracle of the Lord.
i am awaiting a call/email from his dad, aka “hawaiianbod” and will let you know.

Aloha Stadium?
When you guys recommend that UH takes over the stadium or builds one, you are not considering the cost of maintenance & repairs after the cost of construction. I don’t think the University wants to take that on. They have a hard enough time keeping up with repairs on campus. It’s the availability of funds. In the end, the Legislature is going to have to cough up funds (your & my taxes) to catch up with the backlog of building repairs. Taking on the Stadium is a no-win scenario for UH.
BTW, who funds the high school games played in Aloha Stadium? Do they have to pay to play in the Stadium?

Last I heard is that OIA schools get to play for no charge, but they have to pay for security and clean up.
#129….Slugger…understood which is why the Stadium needs to be used for other events. Look at Stanford. Their stadium is used for football. But they also hold concerts there (charge rent and fees)…hold events there….(charge rent and fees)….promote the place for private functions (sort of like Toyota, I think, holding their special function at Murakami Stadium with Aerosmith…I think UH made a nice chunk of change off of that, if I recall). I’m not saying it will be easy and not saying UH should operate the stadium…just weighing the pros and cons of spending hundreds of millions on revamping Aloha Stadium to bring it to a decent facility….or spending a little more and getting a “state of the art” facility that can be used for multiple purposes and be more cost effective.
As for high school sports, I know in the past that high schools (or their leagues, i.e. ILH and OIA) had to pay to play there. Just like graduations, the schools pay to rent the stadium.

Not sure when but maybe over twenty years ago it was decided that paying customers of Aloha Stadium (flea market, UH football etc.) would subsidize high school football games at the stadium. Of course this was when UH was drawing over 40,000 per game. While it meant paying for clean up and staff they weren’t paying rent.

Teddy’s is pretty good, however, you have to avoid the add ons and bundled burgers. There is no price break on the bundles, every item in the bundle is charged separately as an add on. You can quickly get to a $10-$12 burger without realizing it.

Watching Philipines vs Michigan softball on ESPN2 right now. Top of the 4th, 8-0 Michigan. Philipines girls said that this is there way to make it for themselves to get out of the Philipines. Hard to tell if anyone from there could make UH’s team as they are getting smashed. I believe, but could be wrong, that this is the 3rd game, with the first 2 decided by 1 run.

2010 Big League Softball Championship is the softball tournament I don’t even know if the Michigan team is the college team or whatever, but I just like to watch softball. 9-0 in the bottom of the 4th. There is a 10 run mercy rule. 1 out runner on third for Michigan. Anybody know what kind of tournament this is? Mich. just scored the 10th run. Looks like they will at least finish out the inning.

When the stadium was built we had .. Islander Baseball… Warrior Football… USFL football…. Hula Bowl? … and high school football.. Now we only have Warrior football.. High school football.. and Swap Meet.
i agree that the stadium can be built for less, but my thinking is that the reason for the high cost is because we got a bunch of scrubs.

Stadium repairs . . .
We already see the results of a metal facility. We can see (feel, too) the results of concrete on roadways. We can see the effects of the sunshine on plastic seats.
Maybe we should just dig a humongous hole with sloping sides. VIP boxes can be refrigerator boxes with a couple of folding chairs and a table. Everyone else sit on the ground or bring lawn chairs.
Field can double as a run-off catch basin, too.
Still might cost over $400M to build, though, because of aquifer studies, the delays by various groups, and the normal shenanigans when building anything out here.

Aaron Kia getting cut by the Jets was at the end of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” last night.
While it would be nice to have everything tied to UH Athletics also within walking distance on campus, it would be a nightmare to try to put a stadium there. Besides of having to buy up a ton of land and move so many tenants, the roads in the area just won’t be able to handle the volume of traffic produced.
For those who have traveled to Japan, Korea, and even places in Europe, we’ve seen first hand how efficient a rail/subway system moves people. Get the first track laid down, and constantly work at it to add newer sections year after year. Produces jobs while in construction phase, and constantly adding more and more jobs with each new section built. Can also have little shopping centers at major stops along the way.
It wasn’t until I was stationed in Korea, that I became aware of how important a decent rail system can be to a city/country. I never had a chance to ride on the trains in Hawaii before they finally stopped running. So, for many in my generation, and nearly everyone that followed, unless we traveled to the mainland or overseas, we’d never get to experience and understand the importance of a rail system. When I was stationed in Japan, I finally realized that if a system is planned out and run right, it is the best way in any big city to get from point A to point B.
Going back to a new stadium… if one were to be built on or near the new West Oahu Campus, the roads will have to be addressed now, before any more serious development is done. Traffic out there is already bad, and will only get worse. What about the opposite side of where the stadium is now? Where the State Fair is held? Is that area too small to build a new stadium? After it’s built, the old one could be torn down for additional parking, or even a couple of parking structures/shopping centers/rail station.

I still maintain that referring to that cowardly act (that that player perpetrated on Rodney Bradley) as “tripping” is a gross understatement. I say it was a purposeful leg-whip after realizing he would be burned for a TD. At the very least he should have been kicked out of the game. Anything less than that + a multi-game suspension was a gross miscarriage of justice.
Am stuck with a lot of work & deadlines over the next four days so I won’t be able to take the time to respond to Aloha Stadium comments in detail; however, there are three critical issues followed by two more extremely important ones which need to be addressed before anything much can be done. Bear in mind that the comments about naming rights and other related commercial issues would apply to any state-owned building, not just the Aloha Stadium.
The Aloha Stadium site contains over 130 acres of land. Most of it is currently used as a parking lot or for running the swap meet. Others do rent either the parking lot or the Stadium, but there are no other permanent buildings on the site except for storage. .
The first two policy issues to address before anything else can be done are: The various federal & state agencies & departments which have some element of control over the site must re-visit the original deed issued by the federal government more than 40 years ago which restricted the land use to recreational activities and to limited non-permanent business activities such as the swap meet. Food, beverage & souvenir concessions within the stadium as well as parking contractors are exempt from the restriction.
The second policy issue is to enact legislation after the transfer which would permit corporate sponsorships and naming rights. Any limitations would be included in the legislation itself.
A third policy issue to discussed would be the possibility of transferring the management & oversight of the site from the Department of Accounting & General Services to the University of Hawai`i.
Perhaps the most important set of policy issues to be discussed would be how to develop the site as part of Transit-Oriented Development. Should the site be just a parking lot with a few retail and service businesses? Should multi-family affordable/workforce housing be developed? Should a portion of the land be set aside to develop a business center? Should another portion be set aside to develop an international outdoor sports venue? Should there be extensive commercial, retail, and even perhaps a limited light industrial area be built on the site along with parking garages?
All of these lead into the final public policy issue – bringing all the players & stakeholders to the table right from the very beginning: Representatives from nearby communities, military bases, swap meet & other long-term site facilities renters, University of Hawai`i, Department of Education, Hawaii High School Athletic Association, Sheraton Hawaii Bowl & Pro Bowl administrators, businesses leaders, state & city elected officials & administrators, sustainable economic growth organizations, architects & planners from the private sector, and others who have an interest in the property & its uses such as UH sports fans..
