J-E-T-S cut Kia

Aaron Kia, former UH offensive lineman, just called to confirm that he was cut by the New York Jets. 

He had a nice camp, but it was a numbers game all the way.

While the Oakland Raiders don’t offer the most job security, they do offer opportunities. Lots of them, especially to ball-handling players and cornerbacks. In NFL circles, the Raiders are known for the two-day contracts — bring a player in for,  essentially, a tryout at the cost of a weekend stay. If he makes it, great. If not, next. 

Which is why the Raiders present an ideal situation for Colt Brennan. 

Brennan, who signed a one-year (non-guaranteed) contract with the Raiders yesterday, needs to compete. And the Raiders, who have been on a long-time search for quarterbacks, are willing to use the preseason as an extended tryout. 

Whether Brennan makes it or not, the main thing is he will get game experience — and exposure. That’s something he has lacked. In his first two NFL seasons, he has not taken a regular-season snap.

Why does Colt matter?

Other than the fact he delivered the memorable moments in 2006 and 2007, he is one of the Warriors’ selling points in recruiting. 

The four-wide offense isn’t being used solely because it wins games. It is used because it emphasizes pass-protection, and that leads to job opportunities for offensive linemen. O-linemen are key in a team’s success, and UH has a better chance of attracting them if it can show that playing for the Warriors improves post-college opportunities. In that light, the success of UH alumni, such as Colt, helps recruiting. The longer Colt is employed by the NFL, the better it is for the Warriors.

    Colt is an under-rated quarterback who has not received the opportunity to show his abilities. In comparing him with the quarterbacks from this region (Texas, Oklahoma), I really think that he can compete head to head with even the other Colt (McCoy). I hope that Oakland will be the platform that will let him show his stuff. What a hidden talent this guy offers and I hope they discover it quickly.

    The Raiders have been losing for quite some time as their luster for “just win baby” has long been gone since Stabler, Lamonica, Marcus Allen and the “Stork” Ted Hendricks has made their mark on Raider Nation. They were once here in LA but Tyrant owner Al Davis won’t let the team go as he interferes considerably with his head coach decesions as there has been a revolving door with them as many along the way don’t have “thick skin” in dealing with Al and his need for his “on hands interference and tremendous ego” !

    The vertical game has long been the Raiders philosophy but time has changed and Al has not changed his way as this season will be a LONG one if they don’t have a winning team and make it to the play offs.

    Colt Brennan is in the “black hole” as Raider fans are the most craziest and passionate fans you will find as a roster spot may come available for him as qb coach Ted Tollner is well respected BUT winning is a MUST for Oakland as it has been YEARS since the silver and black has been on top of the NFL !

    Hopefully Mr. Brennan can make the team & finally get to play “ONE” game in the NFL as Raiders are not known for patience and Al Davis is going no where or disolving his iron fist ownership as the team is not predicted by the NFL pronosticators for a winning season and IF that happens Mr. Colt will have it ever so “TOUGH” in a football career with the Raiders in my personal opinion.

    Just a quick question:

    Why are Paipai and Aaron Brown both slated to play on the strong side?

    I don’t know much but I’d like to see one of them on weak side so both could be on the field on the same time. It just seems like Corey Paredes could be a mismatch that opposing offenses will continually exploit. I hope he has improved from the past season.

    Small World note- Colt will get to sling passes to TE Zach Miller. Miller was the TE for Arizona St. when Hawaii spanked them in the ’06 Aloha bowl with record #’s.

    Zach surely realizes what Colt is capable of pulling off.

    This could be a fun pre-season to watch.

    Then if Colt remains with the Raiders, Both him and Tebows team square off twice. Small world.

    I hope you’re right that Colt will get a legitimate shot/opportunity; hopefully more than the “lip-service” , superficial look that the reputedly (but undeserved) “genius” Shanahan clan gave him. I think only in the Bizarro World (or an alternate universe) is Rex Grossman a better QB than Colt. I do recognize that pathetically enough, mediocre NFL experience is valued more highly than a player with no regular-season experience, regardless of the potential or college career of that player. Good luck Colt! Show them why the ‘Cult of Colt’ in the D.C. area is in mourning.

    Hubby and I enjoyed our stay at the Marriott Resort in Lihue. We got the kamaaina rate.

    We liked the Slavonic Steak served at JJ’s Broiler, which is located down the street from the Marriott in Lihue. This restaurant is owned by the family of UH Warrior Jett Jasper.

    Another good place to eat is Hamura’s Saimin Stand in Lihue. LizKauai treated us to great saimin there.

    I think your son will like Kauai.

    Good news about Ryan Mouton.

    Cornerback Ryan Mouton arguably made the best play of the day at the end of Tuesday’s practice. He read the eyes of quarterback Chris Simms, and then stepped in front of receiver Dominique Edison to pick off a pass and run the other way.

    It’s just the kind of play coaches want to see from the cornerbacks fighting for a starting job. “It is real competitive,’’ Coach Jeff Fisher said. “All three guys are working hard.’’

    A word about hawnstln since he does not post too often. He is one of the original members of Ronnie’s LoCal Tsai-kos. He attends many UH road games and has met ST, who even printed his full name in a blog entry. 🙂

    He is a classmate of Al and I. He and Al grew up together near the Termite Palace. In the years I’ve known him, he is a first class instigator. Still is. 🙂 Do not be surprised if you finally meet him and his family on a cruise out of Long Beach…especially if he and Garret ever team up.

    *Long* feature article on NMSU’s Kenny Turner. He can play for 3 seasons, but Walker thinks that he’ll go to the NFL once he has a big season at NMSU. It will be interesting to see how UH’s D does against him. It is interesting that he went to prison when he was 16 and by the time he was released when he was 21 he had earned his GED and gotten licensed as an electrician and plumber.

    It was a crime that left Turner watching from afar as his two best friends — Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans and Mike Sims-Walker of the Jacksonville Jaguars — flourished on the football field in college and became multi-millionaires in the National Football League.

    An unlikely path back to the football field has brought Turner, once considered a better football prospect than either Johnson or Sims-Walker, to Las Cruces and to DeWayne Walker, NMSU’s second-year football coach, who is trying desperately to change the fortunes of a program entering its 51st season since last playing in a bowl game, the longest such drought in college football.

    Walker and Boston sought campus-wide involvement. A group of would-be recruiters was assembled to grill Turner about his past during his official visit to the Southern New Mexico campus. The committee included Julie Weber, director of Housing and Residential Life; Jim Peach, professor of economics and international business; Jack Thomas, NCAA faculty representative; Bobbie Green, professor of business; and David Keys, professor of criminal justice.

    Each bought into Turner’s appreciation of the opportunity at hand and desire to make the most of his life on and off the field. With that, and with the blessing of NMSU President Barbara Couture, Boston and Walker formally offered Turner a scholarship.

    If Michigan and Alabama can play a game at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium (technically a Michigan home game), maybe UH can fill the puka in the 2011 schedule by playing a game at the Rose Bowl or the 49ers stadium? Some team might be interested in a neutral site game in a location where they recruit.

    If Oregon State can play a “home” game this season against TCU in the Cowboys’ stadium, what about UH playing at Cowboys stadium against some other team who wants to play in front of recruits in Dallas?

    The following details are unconfirmed but of interest since they come from an established source:

    * Game is happening because a desperate Jerry Jones “overpaid.”

    * Michigan will be the nominal home team (important mostly for TV rights) and receive more money.

    Fresno State is looking at making major revisions in their fundraising model, though it should be noted that they appear to raise significantly more money from donors than UH does right now.

    Foundation volunteers still conduct an annual fund drive that generates millions of dollars in donations and season-ticket sales. The foundation still is responsible for paying the annual athletic aid bill — an estimated $5.36 million in the 2010-11 school year.

    The Bee obtained a Bulldog Foundation document showing that the number of donors to the annual scholarship fund drive fell from 4,232 in 2004 to 2,829 in 2009, a 33% drop. The number of annual fund volunteers fell from 317 in 2004 to 139 in 2009, a 56% drop. The number of football season tickets covered by membership fell from 8,202 in 2006 to 5,930 in 2009, a 28% drop.

    Fresno State currently sells seat licenses for 10-year periods, but is going to instead do something similar to UH with donation levels each year required for the best seats.

    By paying a seat-license fee — $2,750 for center-of-the-field seats in 2001, when they were most recently renewed — a fan has exclusive opportunity to buy a season ticket for that particular seat for the next 10 seasons.

    Fans will pay an annual donation as well as the season-ticket price. The total one-year cost of a 50-yardline seat could be about $600, Barnes said.

    Looks like BSU is recruiting well in Texas.

    Ajayi (6-foot, 200 pounds) also had offers from Minnesota, Tulane, Wyoming and New Mexico State, he said. He rushed for 1,526 yards and 20 TDs on 202 carries last year.

    Ajayi is the eighth commitment for the 2011 recruiting class confirmed by the Idaho Statesman. Three of those players are from Texas.

    BSU has banned their players having Twitter feeds.

    Petersen has banned his players – nearly a dozen of them were regulars on Twitter – from interacting on the social media site during this season. No football. No personal thoughts. No nothing.

    It is precisely because everyone is always watching, because the Broncos are so popular, because college athletes struggle to carry themselves in a certain way every hour of every day that Petersen decided to pull the plug on tweets.

    Given the problems social media have caused at other universities – the NCAA is investigating alleged misconduct at other schools in part because of Facebook posts – I totally see Petersen’s point. I’d probably do the same in his position.

    I have mixed feelings about the way Boise State does business.

    It doesn’t allow its players to be interviewed by out-of-state media the week leading to games.

    It refuses to do Heisman campaigns.

    It closes its practices.

    It had the least informative media guides.

    OK, maybe that’s essential to winning.

    Maybe not.

    But then when its players don’t get recognition for awards, who’s to blame?

    When it doesn’t get high rankings, can BSU complain?

    Now, for all of UH’s faults, would you like to see the Warriors’ program run that way?

    Closed practices.

    Blah media guides.

    Limited interviews.

    Even if it correlates to winning, would fans be happy not having access?

    Hubby went to the Rainbowtique at Ward Center and bought 3 T-shirts: a Basketball one, a Softball one, and a plain Univ of Hawaii one — But there was nothing in FOOTBALL, alas!

    Good thing about Rainbowtique — they do not charge tax!!! So 3 shirts cost just $30. What a steal…

    Not to mention, free parking at Ward Center.

    Every so often I’ll see people complain about what they perceive as lack of information from the local media.

    Then again, UH doesn’t report any injuries, suspensions, cuts, signings.

    Reporters gather that on their own. For instance, UH didn’t announce Spain’s injury. But because he played safety for two days, it led to the question: why? When interviewed, Spain revealed the injury and coming season-ending surgery.

    You wouldn’t get that information from Boise, because practices would be closed and a player like Spain wouldn’t be available to be interviewed.

    Would UH fans like a situation like that or not?

    I bring this up because, I imagine, UH one day could end up that way.

    I’d chose winning over letting out-of-state media have access. It sure seems like the Idaho Statesman is able to have decent access, so their local paper has extensive coverage of their team. They seem to have about as many or more articles in their local paper as the Star-Advertiser has about UH.

    BSU’s players sure seem to be getting a lot of postseason recognition, they get 1st-round draft picks, etc. So, if winning correlates to having out-of-state media having less access…I’d chose winning more since how much does the media outside of Hawaii cover UH?

    So, back to Boise.

    Boise reminds me of a producer who makes a movie, but doesn’t offer an advance copy to critics nor has a promotional tour.

    OK, maybe that’s a bad example because a lot of movies I’ll never watch are Oscar nominees.

    Which brings me to another rant: Ever read Entertainment Weekly? The magazine does an annual issue where it lists the 10 best movies of the year. Thing is, usually eight of those movies weren’t released when the magazine comes out. Basically, the mag is praising movies that the public hasn’t seen.

    But I digress.

    Which is a shame because Boise has really interesting players. The post-game stuff you get from Boise players are great.

    Then again, at the WAC media day, the Broncos admitted that their offseason workouts are “close to” 100 percent, but, no, not perfect.

    The Hawaii media might dislike practices being closed, but a winning team sells more papers and gets more TV viewers. Bottom line for me is that winning more would be best for UH, so if limiting access to out-of-state media and closing practices helps with that, I’d support it.

    I don’t think that closing practices would help UH win more games. However, I *do* think that limiting media access to players might help UH win more games and lessen the burden on its players. For example, I think that the media scrutiny of Colt hurt him on and off the field in 2007 and may have been a contributor to his struggles to establish himself in the NFL.

    ST and others reported how Colt would be answering questions after practice so long that he would miss the entire training table meal. I remember reading how Colt gave up other meal times also to meet media obligations or to be nice to the public. That might have been a contributor to his weight loss during the season, which could have contributed to his decreased stats in 2007 and his poor weigh-in at the combine that significantly hurt his draft status and his *entire* NFL career.

    Colt’s career (and bank account) was permanently hurt by the weight that he had at the end of the 2007 season. Should I think that the meals he missed in order to provide the media full access did not contribute to his weight loss? I know that he got sick and lost some weight before the combine, but doesn’t it make sense that skipping meals would have contributed to his weight loss also?

    So, the Idaho Statesmen gets access to BSU players *and* gets access to the players from visiting teams. So, if UH went to a similar policy then the Star-Advertiser would have access to UH players and players from visiting teams.

    Most college teams have closed practices and limited access to their players. JJ changed the policy for UH when he took over, but that doesn’t mean that UH has to continue the policy forever.

    So, I don’t see this as BSU trying to hide anything…since most of the other teams I know about have a similar (or MORE restrictive) policy.

    One of the rules of UH practices is TV stations are not allow to take wide-angle video of plays. And, of course, the local media, in general, don’t reveal secret plays. That’s because we don’t have access to another team’s secret plays. Fairness thing.

    Actually, every UH football coach I’ve covered fulltime, dating to Wagner, has had open practices and open access to players. There’s a cutoff period time, though. For instance, some coaches did not allow players to be quoted after Wednesday. Mack and Jones allow beat reporters up to Thursday to talk to players; other reporters are cut off after Wednesday.

    With Colt, it wasn’t the interviews that kept him from eating. It was the autograph sessions. During 2007, UH set aside only one time period — Tuesday, I believe — for Colt to be interviewed by national media. That year, Colt used to talk to beat reporters after breakfast. Or he’d call us. But Colt didn’t want to turn down any autograph requests. Sometimes he’d stay an hour after practice signing stuff. And people used to bring bagfuls of things.

    But back to interviews. Remember the story on the lack of soap in the showers? Not only did Colt suggest the story, he came down to the paper to give details.

    Anyway, the point I was trying to make on the Boise comparison, in a round-about-manner, is, it’s not the UH media that could be cut off. It could be the fans.

    So the question should be: If you thought it would help the team, would you want practices closed to fans and access limited to the public?

    So, my take on the whole matter is: Open it up to everyone.

    Because UH doesn’t have an indoor practice facility, there’s no expectation of privacy.

    You can’t stop the guy with the really big lens from shooting practices from Saint Louis Heights. You can’t stop a guy taking notes from the parking structure.

    Besides, with the price of tickets and pay-per-view, UH needs to be as fan-friendly as possible.

    As far as UH’s take on access by out-of-state media. The school is all for allowing its players to be interviewed. When you’re in the middle of the Pacific, you want as much publicity as possible.

    Sorry I had to leave (kids woke up and wanted to play outside) and couldn’t finish my thought. I *agree* that the fan demands were a bigger burden on Colt than all the demands he had with the media. All of the autograph requests after practice, after classes, people even tracking him down in his home had to be draining. I think that Colt was probably the most scrutinized athlete with the most demands on him in 2007 than any other UH athlete I can recall.

    It is nice for fans to have access to the players. It is *not* nice for fans to abuse that by demanding that Colt sign a bunch of things (that might show up on eBay) after practices or anywhere they can find him. It is not nice for fans, media, or anyone to take up so much time that UH players miss the training table meals.

    Colt was so nice to everyone…but it had to affect him on the field and with things like his weight. Didn’t several people close to Colt talk about how the demands on his time really drained him as he went through the 2007 season? So, his weight loss wasn’t surprising…and the NFL reacted to the weight loss by dropping his draft position significantly. A lower draft round means that Colt got less reps in practice and preseason, a lesser chance to play, and much less money.

    I’m glad to help your blog and the local media out. The more information the better since that improves the coverage that we fans get to have. My big worry is that if/when I start my classified work I won’t be able to get on the internet except from before 8am and after 9pm, so I won’t get to read/post on the blog much. Others (NYUH, etc.) have been doing a great job of posting links so your blog will be fine…it will just drive me crazy to not be able to read anything when football season is going on!

    It is *not* good that RGM isn’t even listed as a possibility for punt or kick returner. This is the second time that he’s had a horribly timed injury in an NFL training camp.

    Probably the two competitions on the Dolphins that are still wide open are for kick and punt returner. Kory Sheets’ season-ending Achilles injury this week leaves Patrick Cobbs, Brian Hartline, Nolan Carroll, Taurus Johnson and Julius Pruitt as the kick returners, and Johnson, Pruitt, Hartline and Davone Bess as punt returners.

    Miami had talked about how Bess would be competing for the open starting wideout spot, but it sounds like they have decided to keep him at slot receiver. Bess is great in the slot, but he gets more catches when he’s at wideout and more catches would be nice for him when he’ll be able to negotiate a new contract after the season…of course, that is an incentive for Miami to keep Bess in the slot.

    The competition to start opposite Marshall mostly comes down to Hartline and Camarillo since Bess, who has become the team’s slot receiver and safety valve, isn’t really competing for an outside receiver spot.

    “He’s very good at this other role that he has,” Sparano said.

    That year, Colt used to talk to beat reporters after breakfast. Or he’d call us. But Colt didn’t want to turn down any autograph requests. Sometimes he’d stay an hour after practice signing stuff. And people used to bring bagfuls of things.

    UH shouldn’t allow players to sign autographs for an hour after practice, especially when people bring bagfuls of stuff. Colt is such a nice guy that he gave up his meal time to sign stuff, so in hindsight UH should have been the bad guy and cut off autographs. Maybe something like a 1-autograph limit per person and impose a time limit on autographs (10-15 minutes).

    I hope that UH can limit that type of over-the-top access if similar things happen in the future. I would happily give up getting another autograph ever again if it helped a UH athlete have the time to live their lives and not get drained by the demands on his/her time.

    An hour after practice, people ambushing the athlete after classes, at home, or whenever they are seen in public. Time for interviews, appearances, etc. Without limits, that has to drain the athlete over a long season.

    NO athlete can stay in peak condition and maintain his/her weight if he cannot eat until 3pm! Colt attributes missing meals to interviews, not autograph requests.

    I am 100% in favor of limiting the media so that a UH athlete doesn’t have to miss training table meals. That is completely going over the top in giving media access and hurting the team and the future of the player!

    Just got back… ST, regarding your comments on the public having access to UH football practices and happenings… I think it must…

    UH football is the only college game in the state. They represent the state. I don’t know about Alaska, but how many states have only one college football team? Many of us attended UH. We hope the local high school prospects play for UH. Our second cousin’s friend has an aunty whose son played or is playing for UH. Sometimes a relative or close friend. The sense of ownership and pride from the entire state focuses on the team from Manoa. We met a lot of mainland Tsai-kos who look back here at the team and joined The Warrior Beat.

    Wasn’t that one of the reasons JJ came? Lots of pro teams, but only one University of Hawaii football team representing the state….and if it’s not about money, he just took the highest profile job in the state.

    Some years are better others, but the cycle starts again each year….and we’re here.

    I enjoy going to practice, because it gives me a fun reason to get out and walk. I’d hate to see practices closed and since UH can not secure the perimeters, it’s not easily done if you’re spying. Perhaps Derek Inouchi needs to have signs posted on the fences that remind people that photos/videos are only allowed to authorized media. I saw the father of an opposing team’s player at the first practice. If he was on the job, it’s valid. If he were coming to all the practices between now & the USC game, it’d be suspect.

    One thing the bloggers here can do is to limit the information you post. If you think it will give our opponents an advantage, then share it at a CC, but don’t detail it here or on other blogs. General information about the state of the team is being written up by reporters.

    Speculate all you want on the blog. Argue your points. But think about what you write & make public.

    ST, Garret, I know in ST’s position, he is part of the media. Media people, maybe not ST, would have everyone available at anytime if they could, including 3 am so that they would be the only one to interview that person. Garret as a fan, has his interest in UH’s success. I think everyone should let the coaches make the rules for interviews, as its his job to see that his team is successful. If the team or individual should fail, then its the head coaches responsibility to act accordingly or he may end up losing his job. Some media people, especially the newer ones, may tend to be over anxious to get the scoop. Hopefully, all media outlets follow the coach’s/school’s guidelines, and the fans will understand if turned down for autographs as the athlete has another life besides playing football (class, meals, study hall, family time, church, etc.). It is also the responsibility of the athlete to take care of business first. Hopefully, although they are young, the athletes are mature enough to make the right decision.

    Sorry–was rushing to get to lunch. Bottom line: UH has a disproportionate amount of fan interest and ties due to the state community when compared to other programs in other states….and a disproportionate number of fans for a college team.

    I agree with ST’s #75 about spying stuff…it sounds so WW II-ish…anyone wanting detailed information need only look at game film or the internet these days….or satellite footage if they really cared…. which reminds me, anyone see brew808 recently? I wouldn’t trust any camera/video footage obtained at a practice–especially when the coaches and players know they are being watched… 👿

    you won’t believe what’s been going on down makahiki way. the state disallowed homeless to camp at the old stadium grounds. the unfortunate have moved to the top of the old home road near and around the state library.

    kauai….depends upon where your son is working. if it’s in the kapa’a/lihue area i would suggest kauai beach resort, newly renovated centrally located. if it’s on the west side then poipu sheraton is nice.

    of course if the company is footing the bill….well, i mean really?

    knowing that your son is not a true kamaaina his food tastes may differ from ours.

    comfort foods: hamura’s saimin, dani’s, tip top come to mind. but, lizk and stretch are the real experts.

    Not many UH supporters were pro-Aaron Kia during his UH career when he started and more were skeptical about his NFL chances.

    The fact that the Jets gave him an opportunity says quite a bit for public perception.

    Well, I like Colt, but that wasn’t exactly the case about the interview situation.

    At least during the regular season.

    For national media, there was a set time period — late Tuesday morning, I believe — where he dealt only with them.

    For local media, he would do a group interview with television after practice. Then he would go to the locker, then to the training table. He would talk to the beat reporters after training table, or he would call us.

    School wasn’t a factor because he was only taking two classes in the 2007 fall semester. One of the classes featured only a paper.

    Now in preparation for the Sugar Bowl, that’s where it got difficult. I remember he did some function, and when he got to training table, the eggs and meat were gone. He was upset about that. But that was the fault of the UH people assigned to him. They usually saved food for him; that time they didn’t.

    Then again, 2007 was such a crazy time. UH just wasn’t prepared for the crush of interest.

    Watching the Cowboys and Bengals, I have to say that Colt Brennan is way better than Bengal backup J.T. O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan has only played for about 7 our 8 NFL teams and he was a one time starter for the 49ers when they were terrible. For Colt’s chances, things are looking up!

    For some student-athletes, summer is a time to relax after a grueling year of classes, exams, practices, competition and travel.

    However, there are many who opt out of relaxation and continue to hit the books in summer school while the sun shines.

    THE PROS

    Senior Rainbow Wahine track and field thrower Careena Onosai (Word of Life Academy, ’06) is taking summer classes to ease her schedule during the season.

    “I can get some of my classes out of the way so I won’t be swamped during the fall and spring semesters,” Onosai said.

    Other student-athletes choose to take summer school in hopes of graduating on time.

    “To make up for classes missed because of sports and (to) graduate on time. I chose to take it and my coach encouraged me to,” said junior Rainbow Warrior swimmer Vlad Anastasescu (Bucharest, Romania) on why he chose to take summer school.

    Then, there are some student-athletes that have to catch up or get ahead during the summer session because their professors only allow a certain amount of missed classes during their sport’s season. It benefits some student-athletes to take required major courses during summer session, since during the season, student-athletes miss class for road trips.

    Summer school is also time for student-athletes to take courses that would overwhelm them during their season or conflict with practice and travel schedules.

    “It may be beneficial for some classes to be taken during the summer when student-athletes do not have to worry about traveling during their athletic seasons and provide the opportunity to make progress toward their degrees and graduate quicker,” academic adviser Garrett Clanin said.

    THE CONS

    Despite its benefits, summer is normally conditioning time for most student-athletes as well, so managing conditioning and summer school can be difficult.

    “I honestly would only recommend it if (it) is needed,” Rainbow Wahine basketball freshman guard Shawna Kuehu (Punahou ’08) said. “It doesn’t help me stay motivated to workout. Most of the time I was just too tired to work out because there was a lot of work to do with just summer school alone – workouts just added on to it.

    “Managing it while trying to enjoy summer was pretty much impossible,” said Kuehu.

    Anastasescu added, “It doesn’t really help me stay motivated, it makes me kinda tired to work out.”

    And for some, it’s difficult to work out in between classes.

    “I have workouts in the morning (6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.) so right after that I have to rush off to class (9 a.m.),” Onosai said. “I find it difficult at times to workout because its summer time and all my teammates are off island, (but) training at 6:30 a.m. with a big group of athletes from other sports has helped (me) to stay motivated and work hard.”

    There is NO doubt that the “inside scoops” aka un-officially released information through UHAD *HELPS* generate interest amongst fans and as fans we are all curious by nature. This blog, Reardon’s blog, Ann Miller and Cindy Luis’ blogs and Jason Kaneshiro too are all part of “advertising” and keeping the interest in UH sports.

    We opened 2008 with another big loss to another SEC team in Florida and when the Warriors returned home to play Division IAA Weber State, the stadium had nearly 40,000. So I would say that people were still somewhat feeding off the 2007 season and as far as I am concerned that Sugar Bowl loss PALED in comparison to what the ENTIRE 2007 season meant to all the people of Hawaii and the university.

    Of course, when the home crowd saw a drop off in passing efficency and the losses mounted in 2008, that is what resulted in smaller turnouts.

    While 95% of Hawaii people are “fair-weather” folk, ONE game, in this case, was NOT the sole reason for a decline in attendance or interest for the 2008 season.

    Colt’s situation at Washington reminds me of Corey Nielsen’s situation here with the Warriors. . . proven Quarterback with impressive statistics, but not given an opportunity to develop at the next level.

    Corey has proven himself in the Run and Shoot in high school to be the third leading passer in the nation, yet did not make the training camp roster. He arrives today to replace Spain. I hope he gets reps and allowed to develop in the Warriors RNS.

    I’d have to think that the season-ending loss to Michigan in ’98 was one of the worst. The score was pretty bad, but the really depressing thing was that it sealed an 0-12 season and extended UH’s winless streak to 18. It did turn out to be the end of the VonAppen era, so it wasn’t all bad, although nobody really knew where the program was headed at that point.

    I agree that practices shouldn’t be closed…spies can see the practice from a variety of vantage points since there is no indoor practice field.

    Colt was probably a unique situation with demands from national media and fans endlessly lining up after practices, outside his classes, etc. I doubt that any player has the same level of demands on his/her time (and Colt was endlessly patient with fans), and if a similar thing starts to build up UH should be more ready this time.

    I don’t understand what benefit UH got from hiding the 105-man roster…do they think that USC is worrying about which player made the cut to get the 104th and 105th spot on the roster? I doubt they will scout more than the starters and key backups, and those players will be widely known before camps ends so the 105 player roster doesn’t concern them.

    I love the 3+ articles every day in the Star-Advertiser. Hopefully it continues, and all that news has to help with fan interest. There isn’t much national media attention now (especially when compared with 2006/2007), so we are reliant on the local coverage. Since there is just 1 paper instead of 2, we need the Star-Advertiser to do what they are doing.

    I think that it would be great if Hawaii residents could get UH-themed license plates for their car. It would be great advertising for UH and also raise money for UH or the state.

    Since launching sales nine months ago, the company has sold in excess of 19,000 license plates and generated roughly $4 million for the state general fund, according to My Plates president Steve Farrar.

    “We’re working with a number of colleges and sports organizations, and certainly all of them are candidates,” Farrar said. “TCU will have its plate in our program next year.”

    Techcrunch claims to have proof that Verizon will have the iPhone in January–they say that Apple has submitted orders for *millions* of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. I’ve heard so many of these rumors that I don’t believe them anymore…but if the news is verified that Qualcomm chipsets (those could not be used for AT&T service) have been ordered by Apple, everyone will probably know in a month or two.

    Checked the Oakland Tribune site. The pre-season games for the Raiders are not being televised; nothing listed on the schedule for ‘TV’, at least on the paper’s schedule. Sooooo, it looks like it’s being televised in LA! on KTLA… It might be televised on Comcast SportsNet in the Bay Area, but AnnodahLiz doesn’t have cable. Looks like the LA area Tsaikos will get to see Colt play on Thursday…

    Oceanic’s scheduling guide shows that KHNL is showing an NFL pre-season game on Thursday starting at 4:00 p.m. It doesn’t indicate which teams are playing.

    According to the NFL site, there are three games scheduled on Thursday. Carolina at Baltimore is already pegged for ESPN. New Orleans at New England is set for 7:30 eastern time, which would be 1:30 HST. Oakland at Dallas is set for 9:00 eastern or 8:00 central, which is 3:00 HST. I’ve gotta assume that somebody looked at the 9:00 eastern start time for the Dallas game, assumed that was CST, and concluded the start time in Hawaii would be 4:00 HST.

    Bottom line is it looks like the game will be shown in Hawaii. I think.

    OFF SPORTS TOPIC:

    Finally figured out how to download MP3 music into my new iPod, but I can’t figure out how to keep the little thingees from falling out of my ears. I went back to the Apple Store and paid $50 for a package of three pairs of earpieces, but even the smallest pair won”t stay in my ear unless I tape them to my ear lobes.

    Every day I see small kids wearing earpieces. Surely, their ears are smaller than mine. Where do they get them? Any suggestions? I do NOT want to wear big old earphones connected to each side with a wide metal band while working out or walking, but what other options are there besides having the holes in my ears cut open & widened.

    Off to bed – hope that Colt stays healthy and gets his chance to play.

    NAPA, Calif. » The Oakland Raiders could have recently signed quarterback Colt Brennan on the field for Thursday’s preseason opener at Dallas.

    The former Hawaii star took a handful of snaps with the Raiders’ second-team offense yesterday, completing four of six throws. He also spent time with quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett after practice before heading to his room for a crash course in Oakland’s offense.

    Brennan was Washington’s sixth-round draft pick in 2008. He was cut by the team last Monday after the Redskins traded for John Beck.

    The Raiders made the move out of necessity.

    Backup quarterbacks Bruce Gradkowski (groin) and Charlie Frye (wrist) are questionable to play against Dallas, leaving only starter Jason Campbell and backup Kyle Boller as the healthy quarterbacks on the roster.

    Oakland coach Tom Cable didn’t rule out Gradkowski or Frye playing against the Cowboys, but said the decision to sign Brennan was precautionary.

    “That’s why we did it, in case both of those guys are still out by the time we leave Wednesday,” Cable said. “It will give us a chance to finish the game up with him.”

    Brennan developed a solid fan base in Washington despite never playing in a regular-season game in two seasons. He spent 2009 on injured reserve after hip surgery, then had knee surgery in March, which set him further back.

    The Raiders called Brennan four days after he was cut by the Redskins, had him in for a workout between practices Saturday, then had him in uniform for the evening practice.

    “Basically I’m just trying to get somewhat of a game plan for Thursday night, just so I can be ready,” he said. “I can at least look like I know what I’m doing out there and have a chance to move the ball and have some success with that third team. Obviously with some of the injuries, the potential of that is really high. I’m just getting ready for it and hoping for the best.”

    Some question whether Brennan’s freewheeling style can work in the more regimented NFL, but he thinks it will work in his favor under the current circumstances.

    “I’ve always had an ability to see the field and make a play,” Brennan said. “Sometimes it drives the coach nuts, but when it works I end up getting a touchdown or something good ends up happening. I can kind of hopefully rely on that Thursday night.”

    I got my guy DVD Al who has a recording studio in Hawthorne and he records from vhs and dvds to selling the FINEST big screen tv’s that you will ever see. I know I finsh my Center after 2:00 Thursday so I will get him on board with this project as he is my “main man” as he will record it in high definition with surround sound at a reasonable cost to me !

    DVD Al is the BEST and has taken old footage of my Hawaii playing days from vhs to dvd as I really LOVE the guy who looks forward to my prescence when I walk through his studio doors !

    The only question I have is “who do I send the recorded dvd to” once complete as I will pick it up that evening after work and send it out to you from LAX postal airport as my goal is to get it to you by Monday no later then Wednesday ?

    Good folks of Tsaiko Nation I am on this as I will see DVD AL today and take care of this project for you as I have GREAT LOVE for Colt and knows what he means to all of you and Hawaii !

    Time frame of game will be appreciated as I won’t have a chance to get back on the blog until this evening as I run my day camp progam starting from 7 am as anyone with that info can leave it on the bolg I will appreciate ?

In the recent past, we’d always get burned by big, tall, talented TE’s. We stuff the run on a series, and make decent plays on wideouts, only to give up a big, demoralizing first down or three (or even touchdowns) to our opponent’s TE’s.

    I don’t like the comments from the Raiders coach. Maybe I’m reading it negatively but, when he said “that’s why we did it, in case both guys are still out by the time we leave on Wednesday.” To me it sounds like they just want to fill in a spot when both teams will be playing 4th stringers. Colt will be the Raiders 5th QB. Campbell penciled the starter, with the back up there and 2 QBs temporarily out with injuries, and Colt. I just have the feeling that he will not get much of a chance. If 1 or both QBs are able to play in the game, will Colt even have a chance to play? Come on Colt, do your thing!!!

    This is a big break for Colt! He is still in the NFL. All he got to do now is prove himself. We in Hawaii know.

    His greatest assets on the field are peripheral vision, quick reads, accuracy and improvisation, running and passing. He brings a strong sense of optimism to any team, strong leadership skills and a WILL TO WIN embedded in his pysche that is infectious to the rest of his teammates. His center is Satele so he has one big ally. Now he got to bring out the best from nine other guys when he is on the field. These are intangilbes that cannot be known in practice. The only way you are going to find out is to play him. All he needs is a chance to play,to show his stuff, and let others see what he is made up of.

    He would be a good back up for Mike Campbell who is good for only one or two quarters. Hope the coaches see this. Redskins coach Jim Zorn did not see this and another big mistake was Zorn did not put Colt in a real game situation to let him show what he could do. Now he will never know and he is gone. How sad! I am a Redskins fan because I lived in Washington, DC once. I would have loved to see Colt play quarterback for the Redskins. It would have been a dream come true.

    Colt’s days were numbered when Mike Shanahan was hired to coach the Redskins. You must remember he was the coach of Denver Broncos when the the dormitory incident occurred at University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado. He carried a negative view of Colt and it was a matter of time before he let him go. I expected Colt’s release sooner or later.

    I hope Colt the best with the Raiders. Our wildest dream is for Colt to lead and turn around the lowly Raiders and bring the team back to grandeur, back to the the glory days of Ken Stabler and Nick Bilitnikoff and company. The least is he will have a chance to play and be given the opportunity to prove he belongs in the NFL.

    Corey Paredes is our best Linebacker!, period. Size is only a part of the whole picture. There are a lot of pros that are under six feet. They surpass taller men because they can simply flat-out PLAY. Corey is one of these type of players. I don’t understand how you come to the conclusion that Corey is a “mismatch”. Corey had TEAM HIGH sacks for the 2009 SEASON despite playing probably just half the amount of time of the regular starters. He accomplished “WAC Player of the Week” in his SECOND start. There’s so much about him, but I want to add one more thing to support my point, Corey’s name recently appeared as one of the four or five Warriors on Phil Steele’s 2010 All-WAC Pre-season Teams. Corey is an awesome athlete. Yes, Ryan Mathews from Fresno ran past him, and so did Porter from LA Tech, but no shame in that, these are excellent running backs at the top of their collegiate careers. Mathews was a top five NFL draft pick this year! Corey will get bigger, faster, and smarter, no doubt about that. So get on the Corey Paredes bandwagon and celebrate our TEAM! It’s OK to want your favorite player to start. But trying to accomplish that by badmouthing other players is poor form. Especially when you are sooooo wrong.
