So does a person win in the Oklahoma drill? Be bigger? Stronger? More experienced? More motivated? Meaner? Quicker? Lower? Faster? Better technique? Hmmmmmm. Should be very ineteresting. I’ve been watching those drills with Manuwai for several years? Vince Manuwai is pretty much the king of the Oklahoma drill in Jacksonville. Good technique, good get-off, good initial punch, good first step, nice leg drive, good choppy steps, wide base, very good leverage. Will be interesting to see how the young rookie does. Rookie has to beat the old guy off the ball, gain ground on his first step, get a good two hand shiver, and good hip explosion, good leverage, and he may have a chance.

From the tail-end of Saturday ramblings…al, my friends and I were jonesing for Japanese food on Friday and tried to get into sooo many izakaya/sushi places on Friday night without reservations. No luck before 8 at Yohei, Imanas Tei, Sushi Izakaya Gaku, Tokkuri-Tei, so wound up waiting at Sushi King until some friends called and said come to Akasaka. Then afterward, ended up a Amuse Wine Bar, slugger, where the soccer party was just winding down. Would’ve soooo bid on golf for $75 with Coach Wade….what a steal/deal!

It sometimes show up in the section called Blogs, but nearly half the time none of the blogs show up at all in that area.

On another note, thanks ST for the position breakdown, you must have been multitasking while watching 17 Again.

Help, I’m so out of practice going to actual football games (as opposed watching on TV) that I’m not sure whether to get tix for the Army-Hawaii game close to the team or up higher to view the action a bit better. Any suggestions?

    I’m looking at Section 29

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Is that the “Ropes” course in the pix? Haven’t been to Timberline in over 10 years since the kid went there for an overnighter. One thing I learned was that our “city kids” know very little about camping unless they were in scouting. Ropes is a good team building and self confidence course. It looks like the Warriors are doing a “King of the Mountain” type thing!!??

  53. SteveM August 1, 2010 8:53 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Welcome home TChahng !

Please send me your new email address (if it changes).

BTW, do you karaoke? I never asked you and BG was not saying… 🙂

…of course, this complicates the Tsai-ko Korea Chapter situation…

  54. TChahng August 1, 2010 8:55 am

gigi, It is normally spelled Chang. I spell it with the extra h to emphasize the -ah sound. I’m using the Thai pronounciation.

  55. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2010 8:57 am

SteveM, how many are in the Korea Chapter? Don’t forget, I am one…

  56. TChahng August 1, 2010 8:57 am

SteveM, Thanks. My email is the same.

  57. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2010 8:58 am

TChahng, I vaguely remember your story, told years ago. You got the nickname while in the service in Bangkok? So you are not truly a Chang. Something like that.

Team mates, team work, GO TEAM!

    PowderPuff,

Sorry to have missed you at Amuse. I took my sister-in-law with me. Turns out she knows the organizer of the soccer event who was my niece’s first volleyball coach.

  62. Slugger August 1, 2010 9:16 am

    TChahng,

Welcome home! Congratulations on the win here.

  63. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2010 9:22 am

Slugger, I wondered how the fundraiser at Amuse worked. In addition to the $50 admission, did you have to pay extra for the wine and pupus? I realize the $50 was tax deductible. I just wondered how much the wine and pupus cost.

  68. Slugger August 1, 2010 9:45 am

    Gigi,

Turns out half of the $50 admission went to the food & wine and the other $25 went to the team which was tax-deductible. Everyone, of age, received a card with a $20 value for the wines. If you’ve been to Amuse you know how their dispensers work giving you an ounce to taste at different costs based on the wine. There was a silent auction. Rob25, I tried to get the Margarita basket for us, but no luck. PowderPuff, I should have just bid on the golf package with Charlie; one of you could use it. I’m sure it went up at the end of the bidding; it was just really low when I looked at it.

  69. NYUH August 1, 2010 9:53 am

    # CoolEthan:

This is actually some good news. The story circulating recently was that Washington would only carry two QBs.

    http://www.redskins.com/gen/articles/Practice_Report__Training_Camp_Updates_133998.jsp

Shanahan was asked if he prefers carrying three quarterbacks on the roster during the regular season.

“Yes, I think it is good to have three quarterbacks if you feel that guy deserves to be on your football team,” Shanahan said. “Number one, you never have enough quarterbacks and if you lose somebody, it’s hard to find a person that can come in and run your system.

“So that’s why you try to protect them and have four or sometimes five quarterbacks that know your system. Once you lose a guy or two, regardless of how good the quarterback is, it takes time to learn the new system.”

  73. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2010 10:23 am

Slugger, sounds like fun. Something different. I have never been to a wine tasting party, as I am not a wine-lover. I prefer champagne or beer.

If I had gone, I would have opted for water and pigged out on the pupus.

  74. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2010 10:27 am

NYUH, interesting story. I wonder if Shanahan kept his brand new house in Denver or sold it to live on the east coast.

I hope he has what it takes to make the Redskins a contender.

  75. madeinhawaii August 1, 2010 10:35 am

I’m not a wine lover, either. I was once married to a whiner… a little to throaty, hard to swallow, some what dry for my taste and much too often I ended up with a very bad after taste…

  80. madeinhawaii August 1, 2010 10:56 am

    gigi..

So you can see how much you put in the saute pan when cooking?

  81. gigi-hawaii August 1, 2010 11:05 am

hmmm. I used to cook with wine. Not anymore. BUT, I do add a bottle of beer to the pot when I am cooking lobsters. yumm…

  82. madeinhawaii August 1, 2010 11:31 am

We now have 9 FB alums confirmed who are coming in for the game. We will be at the tailgate in the morning. Please stop by to say hello. Want anything from the bookstore to wear for the game??

    Let me know.

  90. papajoe2 August 1, 2010 12:35 pm

Just yesterday I took a CPR (ha,ha, got that spelling right) and safety class that showed a film about a guy who had a concussion in football and played the next game, before he was properly healed. Ended up taking another hit, brain swelled, took out almost half of his skull out until the swelling went down, which took months, and had to learn to walk and talk all over again. Will never be 100%. Hard to understand what he is saying and walks like one of those unfortunate people who had a severe stroke. Coincidence with DR’s article? Didn’t have the guts to read it yet, but I will.

  93. al August 1, 2010 1:03 pm

the fact that michelle wie hung in there and battled back to come from, at one time, 60th to finish at 17th says a lot for her mettle. this tournament could very well be the turning point for her mentally as she did hang her head, sulk, pout, but instead got tough out there.

i hope she can find her putter one of these days. perhaps a different approach to the greens and a fresh new mentor may go along way.

  94. al August 1, 2010 1:04 pm

  96. Garret August 1, 2010 1:18 pm

Bad luck for RGM–he has an injury and had to sit out of training camp today. The timing of the injury could cost him, so hopefully he’ll be fully healthy soon so that he’ll have a chance to make the roster.

WR Ryan Grice-Mullen, who took mental reps and worked with a trainer on the side but didn’t participate in any drills, told me he will be back out there Monday. “Just a little knack,” RGM said. Looked like a leg issue.

  97. Stephen Tsai August 1, 2010 1:21 pm

I was just in Hawaii so I’m stocked up on Warrior stuff.

I think Z is closest to the team and earlier letters up higher. With the Warrior air attack it probably will be good to get a little altitude.

Lets try to connect before the game.

  99. CoolEthan August 1, 2010 2:49 pm

    I dunno al-

Michelle has been dealing with closure problems for some time.

Her main sponsors might be getting a bit edgy.

When do her contracts expire with Sony and Nike?

  100. Garret August 1, 2010 2:50 pm

David Veikune had been receiving great praise all offseason for his hard work and improved play. Many, many articles were discussing his chance to earn playing time this season with continued strong play in training camp. Unfortunately, he’s injured now and has to sit out practices in training camp.

Second-year linebacker David Veikune joined the injured who didn’t practice. The injury wasn’t disclosed.

  101. Garret August 1, 2010 2:52 pm

I don’t think that Wie has to worry about sponsors dropping her. She just signed with Kia and McDonald’s earlier this year.

A month after signing an endorsement contract with Kia, Wie agreed to a two-year deal with McDonald’s – making her the first professional golfer to represent the famed golden arches since Greg Norman more than a decade ago.

Sorry for the Colt lovers but it just does not look very good.

Masoli is really a Rebel now.

The former Ducks quarterback, dismissed from the team after two run-ins with the law, visited the Ole Miss campus in Oxford this weekend and coach Houston Nutt offered him a place on the team as a walk-on.

Masoli, a California native, posted on his website Sunday that he intends to take up the offer.

    Good evening Tsaiko Nation !

A successful Aloha Fest as 48 of 60 incoming So Cal freshmen showed up at Emerson Park in Torrance, California with tense and eager parents in the fold as the kona coffee came in handy with it all gone during the three hour reception and program !

GREAT Hawaiian food on a long table as incoming students ate GOOD as their healthy appetites enjoy local cuisine as my macaroni salad was GONE in 30 minutes with all other delicious items completely GONE after the three hour program !

We gave ALL in attendance their choices of UH shirts, alumni bags, tote bags, caps, bag straps, Warrior coolers and mugs as NOTHING was left as I even gave Mr. A House last rolls of Hawaii Sugarbowl posters as I was swarmed by young hands leaving me with nothing but the tube and personal letter !

Biology majors, engineering hopefuls, school of nursing, psychology and pre med majors soon to be future graduates with Many double majors and minors as they spoke with LOVE and confidence of their decesion in making UH their College school of choice !

BEAUTIFUL day as each parent and student felt our ALOHA as we received many hugs from the incoming bunch and GRATEFUL appreciation from weary parents who felt pure joy that their child was going to UH far across the atlantic ocean !

No rest for the weary as I and my Chapter alumnus get ready to start the recruiting class for 2011 in September as Orange County and South Bay high schools are already prepared for our College fairs as our goal is to recruit 100 and get them signed, sealed and delivered to Manoa !

GREAT day and successful aloha fest as Tsaiko Nation “WE” got this freshmen class coming with younger siblings TELLING their parents they want to follow in brother and sister foot steps !

    CONGRATULATIONS Hawaii Nei !

Some new faces like defensive linemen Beau Yap, who was the Honolulu Advertiser’s co-defensive player of the year, could be a factor early in his career and the same could be said for defensive back Marcus Umu, who was a Hawaii all-state selection.

  116. badayu August 1, 2010 6:33 pm

does anyone know if the compliance office gave the okay for camp timberline? if coaches cant even pick up a player at the airport, or buy a player a meal, how is attending an adventure camp for free okay? matt leinert shared an apartment with a team mate his last year at usc. the apartment was paid for by matt’s father. that ended up being a rules violation and the team mate was forced to pay matt’s father half the rent. wouldn’t that be really something if all the linemen were ruled ineligible for the usc game. i hope uh didn’t screw the cat with this one.

  117. Ralph August 1, 2010 6:38 pm

A change in the way UH is accepting donations on line. On the UH athletic website, the support athletics tab takes you to the original contents on the left column where you can select team support and a follow up drop down, give to a specific team, beyond that things have changed, i selected softball and there is no softball link anymore, it brings up the UH Foundation site, no mention of athletics, softball or tsaiko account. I’m sure it can be found with lots of probing around the site but for a newbie interested in donating some money on line it can be intimidating or confusing.

  118. NYUH August 1, 2010 6:46 pm

Masoli will walk on at Ole Miss

Chow could have gotten double at UH.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/ncf/news/story?id=5424226

UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow has agreed to a two-year extension, a school spokesman confirmed Friday morning.

The Los Angeles Times reported late Thursday night that Chow will earn between $400,000 and $500,000 per season under the extension, making him one of the top-paid assistant coaches in college football.

last call i took a chance and proceeded, it takes me directly to a very well put together website featuring the UH Foundations, lots of features including articles of past donations. seems real and authentic. i wonder if UH F is trying to pool all funds into a general fund to gain control-not political right, but a powerful tool if you got control of all the money

    Re: Wie.

Sponsors get their money from the public.

Question: Do you buy things she promotes?

Maybe, probably not if you’re a guy.

but then there’s the intangible side. Even when she falters, she’s still news. How many non-winners are shown regularly on SportsCenter? Maybe you don’t buy her products, maybe you don’t buy her image, but her image is always out there.

  127. A-House August 1, 2010 7:28 pm

    Ralph:

your #124 – a “powerful tool” for what?

to many examples of things gone wrong when certain individuals “control” all the money.

IIRC, UH Foundation had a major fund drive that netted over $250 million – what are these funds earmarked for? is there transparency for this? can “joe shmo” get information individually or will it take an act of Congress or will UH be willing to be up front and tell all total amount collected and what “projects/amount” are being targeted?

Great Mahalo to you and your fellow alumnus for acting as good will ambassadors for UH in prepping the incoming freshman on what they will encounter in their college careers in Hawaii. We all need to reach out and bring them into the UH ohana!

Hopefully, this will help them adjust to our culture and the many people they will meet from so many different parts of this earth. Who knows, they may meet a future President of the United States or become friends with a future parent of a President.

Altho the PAC 10 does a “down nose” on Hawaii because of our small population base, someday they will be surprised to see how many up and down the West Coast support Hawaii as more and more student decide that UH is a GOOD SCHOOL.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

gigi, you stated you love champagne which is carbonated wine. So you could probably do a wine spritzer, wine with club soda at a tasting. d1 is correct that the Zinfandel grape is red. In the pressing process, invariably some of the pigment in the skins color the wine, ergo, the pink look. All grape juice is clear or “white”, it is the skin pigment that colors the wine. Of course green grape skins will give you the “white” wine rather than “green”.

Enough of the oenology trivia. Go Warriors!

  138. al August 1, 2010 10:02 pm

ralph….how else would a righty putt? same as how else would a righty grip the bat? it’s the same grip just that the position of the club and bat are south and north but the hands grip the club/bat the same way.

  139. papajoe2 August 1, 2010 10:04 pm

Ralph #134. Bank of Nigeria doesn’t have any money because I won several lotteries from that bank. hardeharhar.

  140. al August 1, 2010 10:05 pm

it is a known fact and i am sure if garret googled that the galleries are heaviest when michelle is on the course and the same applies with the viewership on the tube.

surely she needs to win but she is probably such an abnomally in pro sports that no other like her has garnered big bucks in commercial sponsorships for one who is not yet a proven consistent winner.

  141. Ralph August 1, 2010 10:06 pm

Al it appears that she putts like a right handed batter, but her left hand is on top of her right hand, its cross grip. she holds her golf club like a left handed batter would except she is putting like you would face the cup in a right handed stance. got to ask powderpuff-what is the scoop on putting cross grip

  142. Slugger August 1, 2010 10:07 pm

    A-House,

The UH Foundation puts out an annual report that provides information about total donations, probably by category, and where the money goes. You might be able to find it online at the UH Foundation site.

    Ralph,

There is a security certificate problem on their ‘Give Now’ page. I think someone earlier mentioned it and is sending an email.

  143. al August 1, 2010 10:08 pm

    annodah dave…yup just drink em.

i enjoy a nice glass of chateauneuf du pape every now and then.

  144. Ralph August 1, 2010 10:14 pm

papajoe2 too bad you didn’t transfer your winnings from the Bank of Nigeria to BOH or First Hawaiian sooner, and you shouldn’t have forwarded a money order to cover the transaction and handling fee, now you are out $2k. now you have to send an additional $2k to authenticate your account and winnings. good luck

  145. papajoe2 August 1, 2010 10:24 pm

I also use the cross handed method of putting. I keep my left hand as stiff as possible and push with my right hand. My grip on my right hand is loose and used just to push the ball to the target. Almost all of the time my ball goes where I aim it. Sometimes I’m just a little short, but I have the mindset of 2 putts is good. Unfortunately, my weakness is reading the greens. Maybe that’s Michele Wie’s problem too.

  146. papajoe2 August 1, 2010 10:26 pm

Ralph #144 you mean I’m too late to claim my winnings? Aw shucks. Oh well, I’ll probably win again as I feel lucky.

  147. al August 1, 2010 10:32 pm

    ralph…you need glasses.

her grip is a normal one for a righty. her left hand should be slightly higher than her right hand.

go and grip a bat or broom or a stick like a right handed batter. hold the bat up as you would if you were pujols. your left hand should be on the bottom with your right hand on top. now, lay the bat down between your legs without releasing your grip with the bat head touching the ground. where is your hands now?

the right hand is lower than the left, yes, it should be.

you need to take up golf or baseball.

  148. Ralph August 1, 2010 10:32 pm

Wie’s problem is her putting, too many 2 putts. 3 putts are a killer in lpga, so now you can brag, you can putt as good as Michelle Wie.

  149. Randy August 1, 2010 10:32 pm

    Gimme the darn guide. Please.

  150. Ralph August 1, 2010 10:36 pm

on saturday M. Wie tweets, “I am a good putter,” “I am a good putter,” “I am a good putter,” “I am a great putter” “just thinking positive thoughts” at least she understands what she needs to do to win

  151. Ralph August 1, 2010 10:48 pm

Al when wie putts its her left hand that is further away from the knob of the putter, cross grip, and tha’s what i saw on tv this week. i don’t remember seeing her putt with a cross grip before this weekend. I understand what you are saying about the bat and all but she got it reversed. Al take your sugar meds

  152. al August 1, 2010 10:49 pm

ralph…you need a new prescription. i know an optom who can help you.

  153. al August 1, 2010 10:52 pm

her left hand is still higher than her right.

where you watching tv upside down again?

  159. Don Weir August 2, 2010 7:34 am

Like many of you I donate via the UH Foundation; just to keep this comment on the up and up and provide transparency I also work for the UH Foundation.

Many of the back office staff do not get any credit for handling all of the streams of donations that come in to the office.

Mahalo to Jeri, Garrett, and Pat just to name three that are constantly on top of the giving program and processes at UH!!
