It shouldn’t be over
It would be a waste if the athletic department, receiving a windfall that will keep gusting — about $1.8 million annually in student fees — believes there aren’t more financial rocks to overturn.
Securing the athletics fee is a significant step, but there’s more to go to whittling an eight-figure IOU to the school. The athletic department still should pursue a larger cut of parking, concessions and H-logo merchandise.
One of our readers also suggests that the athletic department:
• Get to control more — if not all — of the advertising in Aloha Stadium during Warrior home football games. Imagine booking a hotel banquet room for a wedding, and the hotel gets five tables. That’s how it is at UH football games. Those scoreboard ads? Money doesn’t go to UH and, we’re told, a large portion doesn’t even go to Aloha Stadium.
• Make money off the student fee. Throw it into a CD. Buy an In-N-Out burger franchise. Or, as the reader suggests, put on a concert. Sure, the students were lukewarm about a “free” concert in exchange for an athletics fee, so put on concerts that benefit the athletic department. What? There’s some sort of agreement in which the Stan Sheriff Center can’t cut into the Blaisdell’s concert business? Not to worry. There’s a loophole. Call it a fund-raiser … with music. They’ve had those in the Sheriff Center. New Hope has had events that infused what appeared to be a concert with sermons. We’ve seen the stage, the equipment and the set-up guy saying, “Mic check … 1, 2, 3.” And didn’t Christina Aguilera once have a concert in the Sheriff Center? Of course, the agreement was written when the arena was known as the Special Events Center. It could be argued this is a different arena.

The stadium authority wholesales the advertising rights? Lazy way of doing it, but when a firm secures a long term financial commitment I guess it is hard to turn down guaranteed revenue.
In n out burger does not franchise. All locations are company owned– it has been around as long as mcdonalds but they choose to only open a few stores a year and they only seem to expand linearly– never outrunning their supply lines. Interesting company, that.
Now, trader joes owes it to Hawaii I think. We do most of our shopping there and their company “uniform” is the aloha shirt…
If it wasn’t for UH football, there would be NO crowd at the stadium worth any company advertising there.
Did *UH* pay a single penny for the new scoreboard? Did the Stadium Authority pay a single penny for the new scoreboard? NO, it appears that other entities paid for the scoreboard. So, don’t they *need* revenue to make their investment in the scoreboard to make sense?
FACT is that UH *cannot* expect to get companies to just give it money that it does not deserve. FACT is that *no* new scoreboard would exist if UH had to put out the money. FACT is that the old scoreboard would eventually juts whither and die if people waited for the stadium to come up with the money for the scoreboard…and then if the Stadium Authority paid for it, *they* would deserve the money.
So, UH will get a nice new scoreboard to enhance the environment for its fans and upgrade the stadium in another way that will help to entice recruits to play for UH. The Stadium Authority does not have to to through the multi-year process to find the money when there are so many other maintenance needs at the stadium and simply not enough money to take care of all of them. The Stadium Authority will also make some money off the deal when they don’t have to spend any taxpayer money for the new scoreboard.
So, people want some other company to pay for a new scoreboard and give all the revenue to UH that the scoreboard makes? Then no company would even step up for upgrades in the stadium. And that would hurt UH.
In-n-Out does not use refrigerators, everything is brought in by truck from centralized facilities. That sadly does not work for an expansion in Hawaii.

ST purposely reported things this way to get people upset. The fact is that ST has reported in the past that UH *does* get money from advertising inside of Aloha Stadium. However, UH doesn’t get any money from the scoreboard ads…and UH doesn’t pay anything for the maintenance on the scoreboards or the large costs incurred when a new scoreboard must be purchased.
To play devil’s advocate…I may be mistaken, but I thought UH doesn’t paying rent for the games. You would for a hotel banquet room. Why would companies like Aloha Sports Properties or Oceanic invest in improving the fan experience at Aloha Stadium if they didn’t get to control the profits from their investment? I don’t think that you should use the student fee to invest in anything that wasn’t a near sure thing. How would the students feel if their money was invested in a venture that lost money? Imagine the public backlash if UH lost half of the student’s money in a failed franchise. I’m more than willing to gamble and lose my own money in Las Vegas, but gambling with the money from the student fees would be a bad idea.
I do agree that the athletic department needs to continue to look at other ways of increasing revenue. Concerts, tailgate parties, fundraisers, etc are all decent options; especially if you can get the musicians to play for free. Can the Stan Sheriff center be used for more non-UH events? Several blog readers stated that they would match the student fee of $50/semester. With the athletic fee being all over the news lately, why not reach out to UH alumni and fans to see if you can find 20,000 or more of them that would be willing to do the same? Like Pride has mentioned numerous times, why not let people pay a few hundred bucks to get their name put on a seat at Aloha Stadium, Stan Sheriff Center, or Murakami Stadium? A small placard that says, this seat sponsored by _______ with a date. Why not organize a “brick” fundraiser to line the entrances to academic/athletic facilities with bricks paid for by donors?

It looks like the Pac-10’s revenue sharing is much less equal than even the Big 12…with USC, UCLA, and U-Dub blocking it from being changed to be more equally split. USC has threatened to leave the conference if the revenue is split equally…but where would they go? USC/UCLA to the Big 12?
How can UH invest the money that it gets from the student fee in a CD when it runs a HUGE annual deficit? That money isn’t for UH to spend or invest, it is to plug part of the hole in the budget.
UH needs to find a way to build it’s own stadium. Until then, it will never control the advertising, parking and concessions. Sad part is there is no money to make a new one.
What about this…
All of the local companies/businesses that pay for advertising in the Stadium… would they be able to stipulate in their contracts that a certain percentage of what they pay to the stadium must go to UH? I understand that many of them already support UH in separate advetising. I mean they are paying the stadium’s bills too, after all. What will the stadium say? “No thanks, we don’t need your money”? “We can operate without all of the major corporate sponsors in Hawaii who are partnered with the University of Hawaii”?

As for the SSC…
Don’t forget the clinics that we can put on for the various sports. They can be tied in with events/entertainment at the SSC, and include fundraising. Can a new fund be created for more immediate repairs, that can sidestep the Capital Improvements process?

The facts are that if UH got all the concessions, parking, advertising, and any other revenue that is made at the stadium during UH games…the extra money still wouldn’t pay for the maintenance/repairs that the stadium needs. So the general consensus here is that other entities should pay for all the upgrades and maintenance and UH should get all the money?
I’m just trying to point this out to give the bloggers here the full picture of the issue. ST has already said in the past that he *purposely* says things that he knows are misleading because he likes me to get riled up about things. I guess he succeeded again. No more though, I’ll let things slide from now on.

UH gets money from sideline ads, the ones that circle the field. But those are the corporate ads; if you notice, which companies are advertised. Same as the backdrop.
There’s no reason UH can’t share in the scoreboard ads that appear during its games. After all, if there’s no event, there’s nobody to see the scoreboard ads. It’s not for the maintenance crews.
Of course, you can use the student fees for a short-term investment. The only restrictions are that you can’t use it for salaries. The Ching donation for the field? Don’t think that its sitting under someone’s mattress. The money is earning interest while the school waits for the state to donate matching funds. Same, I’m sure, as the revenue for season tickets.
Another warning: No name calling.
If the Stadium Authority ends up with a profit each year… why can’t 90% or so of that profit be funneled into UH’s athletic department?
Contrary to what Garret wrote, I wasn’t misleading anybody.
I didn’t say UH should get all of the parking, concessions, merchandising or stadium scoreboard advertising. I said they should get a larger share.
For Aloha Stadium, I think UH earns enough in parking through the auction. Its cut of concessions is fine, too. I’ve worked the Stan Sheriff concessions, not as much profit as people think. But it certainly could get a (larger) cut of scoreboard advertising
As for UH parking, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t the parking money used to pay off a bond that built the second parking structure? I’m pretty sure some of the money could go to the athletic department on nights there are on-campus sporting events.
As for the stadium’s maintenance, I’m sure that’s paid from revenue generated from the swap meet and 50th state fair, etc.
And while UH should look for more revenue sources, I also think Aloha Stadium should do the same. Go for more concerts. Several years ago, they had supercross and monster-truck shows. Why not bring those back?

UH doesn’t pay rent, but it does pay for the ushers, security, traffic monitors, ushers, parking attendants, referees, stat crew, etc.
If the stadium workers are on salary, there wouldn’t be additional cost to them working on a game day. I’m just wondering whether the stadium makes or loses money for hosting a UH football game.

So, is there confirmation that Darryl McBride is coming to UH? Saw his highlights and he looks pretty good. Rangy and moves to the ball very well. If he’s 4.45 it’s promising. Since UH has a lot of seniors in the secondary, we will need to look to the future by filling some depth in the cornerback and safety positions. Noticed that we don’t have any verbal commitments for 2011. Do we have any commitments that are not announced from down under or Samoa? Noticed there have been a lot of commitments offered, but none accepted thus far. Based on the QB situation and the number in the program, getting a QB for the 2011 class is not a priority, unless we get a really good one. Somebody in the program has got to step up, big time! In our offense, the QB is everything.

UH does not have to build a new stadium to get control over the revenues. It has to get the Legislature to transfer the ownership from the Department of Accounting & General Services which is not going to happen as long as Transit-Development is coming soon. Eventually, DAGS and by extension the State of Hawai`i, will make more off of TOD than it will from the Stadium itself.

Wonder how much the Stadium could get for naming rights? Boyd’s Stadium, Hawaii…
I have to side with Garret on this one. Someone has to pick up the cost of the multimillion dollar scoreboard. This of course can only be done during the 7 UH home games, the Hawaii Bowl and the Pro Bowl. If you look at it that way, how many of us would be willing to finance the millions it costs for the new scoreboard based on less than ten chances to advertise on it. And how much money could we expect to make during this venture, and would we be willing to share any of the profits with UH who did not risk any of its own money. I just don’t see scoreboard as a dollar bonanza.

one of the reasons why we don’t have in and outs in hawaii is that all hamburger are made fresh from fresh never frozen beef and yes they do transport the burgers, potatoes, via refrigerated trucks from several central production points. this is their way of maintaining quality control.

well, it just so happens that on july 30 and aug 1 new hope is having their annual spirit of aloha event. sandwiched between the two dates will be a free concert featuring the katinas, jaci velasquez, and oliva the band.
the katinas will also perform at the spirit of aloha events as well.
and, yes, if the name katina rings a bell that is the same group of brothers and cousins of uh warrior recruit david katina.
i believe that both gubernatorial candidates are advocates of placing the uh ad in control of the aloha stadium in some way or form.

I was checking on the web and noticed an auditors report on Aloha Stadium ending June 2008. It showed revenues of about 9 million dollars and expenses of about 11 million dollars. The stadium doesn’t sound like a cash cow. Maybe that is why UH told legislatures a couple years ago that they didn’t want to take over Aloha Stadium.

Would it be to UHAD’s interest to “use” the student athletic fee $$$ for purposes other than repaying loans or Bonds? For example, $$$ for recruiting, facilities repair, equipment, etc. On the flip side, use revenues generated to reduce the debt (providing UH makes a profit in the coming years) .
Would UHAD be ahead if they had used the “sugar bowl” $$ for other things rather than repay upper campus loan?
Some one asked this before, but no response. Dobelle, “borrowed” $$ from the athletic department some years ago. Was this $$ ever repaid to the athletic account or used to draw down the deficit?

One of the journalism classes i taught required a text book that cost about $100. I’m thinking, if I go to Borders, how many books would I found that cost more than $50? And this is a journalism text book. I can imagine chemistry text books running much higher.

What I liked about Dobelle is he felt that you don’t show people appreciation with words you do it with money. When JJ was earning $320,000 a year, Dobelle felt that was too little, that JJ should be in in the top 20 percentile, which, I believe was close to a million per at the time.
So, yes, money is how you show appreciation. Dobelle’s problem was that he appreciated too many people.

the $2 million (or close to that amount) that the athletic department expects to receive from the $50 athletic fee, will save the upper campus that amount per year from bailing out the athletic department so hopefully it can be used for maintenance or supplies or maybe teacher pay raises (yikes).

ST #76, At one time during the planning stages of the Waipio Soccer complex and for the Patsy Mink felds in Waipio (Waikele?), they were planning to have dorms so that visiting teams could stay there while they would have games or tournaments at that place. This was so that the professional baseball teams from Korea and Japan could train at the Mink complex and house soccer teams for tournaments at the soccer fields. They were planning to turn the incinerator building next to the soccer fields into dorms. Do you or anyone else know what happened to those plans? Is this what you may be suggesting with the University. Save expenses by housing visiting teams at our own (bugged ha,ha) hotel? Either way, I don’t think the BCS football schools would want to stay at the opposition’s house. Maybe for the smaller sports teams or the non revenue producing teams. We would have to supply maid service and meals to them though but would probably still save on expenses.

ALL my alumni LA chapter buddies were ON as we had our game faces with positive LOVE for the Islands as we packed them in and they left with polo shirt or cap or Hawaii “H” shirt as Hawaii Southern California residents are ready for the MEN OF TROY !
Gave out Mr. A House Sugarbowl posters as they went like “HOTCAKES” with ONE Hawaii enthusiast donating $100.00 for TEN of them as I rolled them nicely with rubberband to keep them tight as all 4 tubes were GONE in 6 hours !
Hawaii music in the air, hula wahines keeping all of us entertain and PLENTY of story from so many Hawaiians they we all know at some time in our lives who just love wearing the shorts, tank tops, slippas and ukulele as hearing a guitar being “strung” is an AMAZING sound and feeling !

My VZW “New Every Two” resumes in October, so I “should” have $100.00 off my Droid X plus whatever instore rebates is offered. It’s been two years since…
I can’t wait. Ever since the leaks about the Droid X have been released, I am getting anxious.
But yes, then the Droid 2 will be out soon and the much anticipated Samsung Fascinate.
Funny thing about the Fascinate is that this Samsung phone will be available for all carriers but will be called different names. Thing is the Fascinate (for VZW) in general WILL be about 4Xs as fast as any current phone on the market and that is insane considering that the Droid X, HTC Evo for Sprint, and the iPhone 4 for AT&T are pretty much equal when it comes to connection speed.
The SAD thing is that AT&T’s version of the Samsung Fascinate will be DOWNGRADED on purpose as AT&T has their b***s in a vice as they do not want to impede sales of the iPhone 4.
Now that is just DUMB because people on AT&T WOULD HAVE had access to the FASTEST phone on their carrier, but because the iPhone’s mainstream and cosmetic popularity is quite strong, AT&T feels compelled to essentially shortchange their customers.
Bulla the Feds had difficulty finding a site for their prison because of local backlash, not in my neighborhood. Same thing with State projects, halfway house, prison, Hale Kipa, etc, the private citizen usually voice their concerns and don’t want it in their neighborhood. The big island has lots of land space, but the prisoners would have to be flow into Oahu for pretrial, trial, and any appeals, another added cost. It cost a lot to run a prison in Hawaii, high payroll and benefits costs because union labor in Hawaii isn’t cheap, especially when there is a lot of over time payments
My brother was incarcerated in Oklahoma. He once complained to me about being served 1 turkey dog on a bun with no relish, mayo or other condiments. That was their dinner.
When he contracted hepatitis C, they refused to give him medication that would have lengthened his life.
After serving 10 years, he was released and died 6 months later.
Where does all that money go for housing Hawaii prisoners on the mainland? It sure doesn’t go toward food and medication.

The middle of the Big Island has very limited infrastructure. You would have to somehow get improved power, water, trash, sewage, mail, fuel, food, roads, housing, etc. services to the area. Another disadvantage to a prison in the middle of the Big Island is that it would probably affect the telescopes on Mauna Kea. One of the great advantages to the location atop Mauna Kea is that there is very little light pollution because the area is not heavily populated. A prison that houses 2000+ inmates will definitely affect the light in the area.

Corporate sponsors can underwrite events and get a snitload of publicity from doing so. They cannot underwrite the capital costs of something and get naming rights for having done so.
Let me clarify & expand my earlier statement:
With respect to TOD, I am very closely tracking this. More info to come over the next several months. The potential investments range from $150 million to $500 million over the next 10 years or so.
By 2013, the taxpayers of Hawai`i and other organizations will have already invested about $110 million in safety improvements and aesthetic upgrades. Once TOD begins and the law barring private ownership of any portion of the Aloha Stadium site is rescinded and UH becomes a powerhouse FBS/D-1A school in football and men’s basketball, major private sector investments will start flowing in to do significant upgrades to the Stadium itself – no matter who owns the site.
By 2022, the Stadium wil be a classic jewel amongst sports venues.
There are no serious plans to replace the Stadium at any location until sometime after 2040.
All of these statements assume no natural or man-made disaster happen to the site and that UH becomes a powerhouse in intercollegiate athletics.
Raise the GET to 4.5% or 5%. Good grief, other states have GETs, sales tax, municipal tax, county tax etc which is higher than Hawaii’s. (OK, they have lower gas tax). The moneys can be used for UH and our educational system.
If the legislature really are serious about UH and want to improve it – facilities, equipment etc, then show some guts instead of worrying about the next election!

Lux Painter – I assume that you are not a Hawai`i ressident. The tax rate here on O`ahu is already 4.5% with the additional .05% going towards the mass transit system. The other three counties pay 4%. As far as I know, Hawai`i is the only state with a General Excise Tax.
There is very little support amongst the voters here for a tax increase even to support the public school system, let alone any other programs. When the Legislature initially discussed raising the GET to fund the school system’s operational expenses, literally thousands of phone calls and e-mails in opposition came flowing into the Capitol. One legislator said that he got five phone calls in support and over 700 in opposition.
The solution most often given by taxpayers to getting more money into the school system is to reduce expenses. However, since about 80% of the operating budget is for salaries and fringe benefits, the only way to cut costs is to cut personnel and reduce salaries & state-paid fringe benefits. That’s why we have Furlough Fridays.
Another reminder – major repairs are part of the Capital Improvements Budget which ae funded through long-term bonds and not through annual tax revenues. As I explained in yesterday’s post about how a project moves through the system, it takes a very, very long time to go from concept to opening the doors for the first time.
The way to improve the state’s fiscal situation overall is to improve the economy through diversification in the private sector.
The way to improve the University of Hawai`i System is to improve the quality of its research and educational products – its graduates – through a number of different ways, including a signficant increase in alumni support which comes from having a strong Department of Athletics. There is a direct relationship between strong academic programs and winning athletic teams.
The most important way to improve the University of Hawai`i’s athletic programs is bump up the winning records in all sports, especially footbal, men’s basketball and baseball while maintaining a high graduation rate.

you bring some light to the situation. The NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) applies everywhere, but that’s life. Your point about flying the prisoners to Oahu for pretrial and appeals would be costly; however, OCCC is used for pre-sentencing and pre-trial individuals so that would not apply. Your point about OT is valid, however if you are short staffed to begin with coupled with a hiring freeze, what is the end result? Cost over runs and never meeting budgetary goals…..the most valid point you bring up is the cost of labor because of the union control. That in itself is probably the biggest hurdle we have to overcome as a state. You have to admit that spending that much money is nothing short of absurd though…….

One of the features Of the iPhone is simultaneous use of the call and data stream. I don’t believe verizon is capable of that, but the biggest hurdle is iTunes. Apple wants control of the downloads and was therefore turn down by verizon before the iphone first came out. Being an apple shareholder I’m most concerned about profitability. Apple is making tons of money with the iPhone and Google is not doing the same with it’s droid os. I can’t think of another phone maker who is bleeding green like apple. I like the competition between Apple and the rest because it can only mean the consumer will benefit. Which phone is better? It really depends if you like an apple or an orange.

There are currently enough votes in both the State House and the State Senate to pass a state lottery, but the opposition outside the Capitol to any legalized gambling is so strong that it would make the Civil Unions issue look like a debate over whether to use skim milk or 2% in a recipe.
Not only are the Religious Right folks against gambling but so are a lot of politically progressive individuals & groups as well as organizations such as The League of Women Voters. These lefty churches & social justice groups feel that gambling in any form impacts the poor & the powerless disproportionately and causes all kinds of social & economic disruptions.
Until such time as the pro-gambling people get as organized as the antis, we will not see any kind of gambling within state borders although there is growing support for some form of sea-based gambling off the shores of O`ahu. I suspect that this will happen within a decade. Unfortunately, very little, if any, of the revenues generated from gambling will increase Hawai`i tax collections although the increase in visitors who come into Honolulu for a day or two will help increase GET tax revenues and spending in local stores and restaurants.
Don’t blame the legislators – they know how to count constituent votes and when the NONOs outnumber supporters by as much as 100 to 1, then they have no choice but to go along with the majority.

Thanks for the info on the iPhone. I admit that I hit the books softly (instead of hard) and googled “iPhone unlock”. Sure was surprised! If Apple won’t unlock my phone, there are lots of others who will. If Verizon does go iPhone in Jan ’11, I wouldn’t mind picking up a 4G with them after I sell my unlocked 3G.
My iPhone has a second business line that rings when my company is called…links me to a virtual PBX. That’s an important reason that I stick with the iPhone although I think I might be able to transfer that feature to another smartphone.

There are certain forms of gambling that I doubt will ever be legalized in Hawaii. Cock fighting and dog-fighting are two examples. Slot machines and table games are far from the first two mentioned.

When I was in Macau in May, I visited the Grand Lisboa, a new gambling casino and hotel. I was allowed to photograph the lobby, but was told to put my camera in my bag as no pics could be taken inside the casino, itself.

Got my day camp in less then 4 hours as this summer of inner city children has surely been a wonderful experience for me personally. Watching growth and development of so many future athletes as my playground is filled with skill athletic young STARS !
Our sat and college prep programs are in full swing as we work on them academically and get them to qualify for admissions for State or University local colleges as I am building for 2016 with many of them on the right course as Parents or guardians are getting on BOARD !
Will be scouting USC next month as I have been invited to a practice by relatives of freshmen wide out Robert Woods as I will have my eagle eye WIDE open on USC talent and set formations as NO Hawaii apparel I will be wearing just your average “SPORTJOE” look who is just thrilled of seeing USC for their first time in his life up close !

DR and the former coach are shooting the breeze in a phone interview.
DR writes that JJ was mingling with the crowd at a LL restaurant in Plano, Texas, where the fare (?) (or flair?) was Hawaiian food and music.
DR also writes that Henry Kapono and Willie K are scheduled to sing the national anthem and do a half time shows at some SMU game this fall.
Is does seem that JJ still has Hawaii in his blood.
It still seems the consequences of JJ’s actions are intentionally mapped out, where it indeed reverts back into giving Hawaii exposure.
In the last part of the article JJ advocates UH football playing independent and the rest of the teams joining the Big West.
This is the part, where if I was on the phone talking to JJ, my heart would begin to race and I’d begin to perspire. Because this is something that I’ve written about here. For even I can see that Hawaii would be a better fit in the Big West-in all sports. Maybe eventually football one day.
Someday if given the chance I would ask JJ why don’t he try wearing a new hat when his coaching days are over, like becoming the commissioner of the Big West. To my way of thinking I’m sure JJ as a commissioner can envision that linking deals with the TV networks would allow the schools facing budget crises to be able to overcome them.

UH should copycat the stadium and hold their own swap meet every weeken. Both upper and lower campuses would make extra money.
