Sorry if this is off topic today, but I have a fees question. Back in the day, fulltime UHM students paid $240/semester when registering, and if I am remembering right, the tuition was $220 and there were “fees” of $20. So when did UH do away with fees? And yeah as a student I would be bummed about fees but would feel better if they are positioned as bundled value — like the examples of bus savings and chances at prime seating you guys mentioned.
As for RainBowTique, it is long past time to have the logo profits go to athletics. Since UH changed the parking price structure at UH, one way to boost RainBowTique sales is replace the Ward Center location with Ala Moana, as ST suggested. Another could be to allow the bookstore to validate parking so that you have a one-hour grace at the bookstore if you are buying logo stuff.

greenthumb….I too remember that fee as a student at UH. I posted that on yesterday’s blog saying that I was for a fee since I recall paying one back in the day.
I know it is hard for students to pay their tuition and books and fees etc. But part of the blame has to go on them as well. Well, I don’t know if blame is the correct word.
Look, UH students pay a nominal tuition when compared with other systems around the country. FT undergrad tuition for residents is $3792…next year it will be $4200. Compare that to UW…$8700, WSU $8500, UC Irvine $25,000, UC Santa Cruz $11,500, UCLA $11,000…even NMSU and Utah State are just around UH’s tuition….
When I was at UH it was like $800 a semester and tuition increases were proposed back then. However, the students fought and won against the nominal increases for each of the 4 years at was at UH. The year after I graduated tuition increased tremendously…I think it was more than double. In hindsight, if the students hadn’t fought those increases, it may have been more palatable with smaller yearly tuition hikes than large one time hikes….
Yep, the graycoats will get acclimated to the routine of college life and should be good to go come spring ball.
I don’t recall what tuition cost…I can’t even recall going to class.

The five-year clock is triggered once somebody enrolls in a school fulltime. That’s why Luke Ingram, for instance, is a four-to-play-four guy.
In the past, a player’s clock didn’t start. That was the loophole. But the loophole has since been closed.
Still, it’s a good deal. As i understand — again, readers, feel free to correct me — but if a player goes to a four-year, non-football school, he can transfer easier once he has accumulated 24 transferrable credits. And, as I understand it, the Division I school only looks at the transcripts from the college, not the SAT scores or high school transcripts.

I’m getting older, so I’ll admit it… my UH tuition was around $125 a semester. I remember carrying all that money in cash to pay upon registration in Klum gym. I also remember an Athletic Book fee of $10-15 (?). I forgot if it was optional or not–probably not.
But, I readily paid it since I was used to buying “Athletic Books” in high school. These books had tickets for all the football and basketball games. Some events, you just show the book. Do high schools still sell books or something similar?
…used to get my hands on a UH book for a decade after, until I ran out of people I knew who were students. 🙄 Also used to sit in the student section on the 45 yard line in orange section.

When I was offered a full scholarship to SF, I said, “I’ll go!” Made it to most of my classes except when I lived across the Presidio with my boyfriend. No direct bus service, so I would sometimes hitchhike. The best ride: my business law prof would come by in his VW van & give me a ride, door to door service. That year, though, I missed too many classes… 🙁 At least I took my Uncle’s advice and didn’t learn to play bridge & waste my time.

Attending class depended on whether the professor spoke understandable english. One of my classes was taught by a guy from India. He was an intelligent man, but his accent was terrible. At times I thought I was and exchange student attending the University of Mumbai.

I can empathize. I took a statistics class and could not, for the life of me, understand the prof’s Japanese accent. Got a C for that class.
I then took a different stats class from a prof who spoke standard English. Got an A for that class.
I skipped a majority of my Biol 101 lectures. The prof always gave some study guide questions at the end of each lecture, and he put the PowerPoint slides online. But he never included the questions slides, so I just got those from a friend the day before the exam. I’d make a last-minute study guide, and study on the bus ride to school. Bought me an extra hour to sleep in before my next class.
Besides skipping a couple Econ and Chem classes here and there, I did attend most of my classes. I didn’t go to too many study sessions, for the most part I studied on my own.
Speaking of which, I should work on my paper. Eh, I think I’ll do some summer cleaning first.

Any word on Chad Lopati and T.J. Alifipo? Noticed that Boise St. already has 7 football commits for 2011 already. Last I checked, UH and the other WAC teams had none. For all of Boise State’s success on the football field, their other sports are not very good. Other than football they will have a hard time competing in the MWC. Their basketball team is not good. And they don’t play baseball either. So, if you ask me UH’s overall program is a lot better than any WAC school. Look at it this way, in 2010 UH has a good chance to compete and win the NCAA National Championship in 3 sports (Men’s and Women’s volleyball, and women’s softball). Personally, I think the UH men’s basketball team will be a lot better this year too. And I feel pretty confident that the UH football team can secure a Sheraton Hawaii Bowl berth also. It all depends on scoring TDS in the red zone, winning the turnover battle, and good play by the QB(s) and special teams. Let the season begin!!!!
Morning classes in college were a bit hard to make. In one comm class, I missed so many classes, the prof told me that even if I got 100 on the final I wouldnt pass, so don’t bother coming. That’s why i scheduled most of my classes for 10 at the earliest after that. Night classes were even better!

One of my coolest Profs. was Dr. Paul Heinberg, a truly brilliant man. At the age of 17, he became a pilot in WWII, and was shot down and spent 15 months in a German POW camp.
He spoke perfect English, but most students never understood a word of any of his lectures.
He used so much technical jargon that we were lost after he said hello.
#39 SteveM. the high school that I’m familiar with, has athletic books. If you play any sports at the school you are required to buy a book. I helps to pay for buses and equipment, etc.
#30 JJ. Thanks for the info on school tuition. When my keeds were in high school and playing sports, I looked up the tuition for for various schools on the mainland. For most of the bigger Cali. schools, the tuition was in the $28,000-&35,000 range with Stanford, USC, UCLA, etc., even higher.. That was more than 10 years ago. UH was about $9,000-$10,000. Most universities in the Cali. state system highly recommends the incoming freshmen to live in the on campus dorms. UH was rated as having one of the cheapest tuition in the USA making it a bargain university. This and no athletic fee too. I know since then, UH increased their tuition, but so did everybody else. Are we still a “bargain” university?
Went to college with the intent of getting all A’s, but regretfully quit. Had a hard time spelling “A”.

Fee increases are part of the cost of living rising. Doing it in small increments each year is the most fairest way to do it. Not having it increase each year and having a huge jump after 4 or 5 years later made some save and some others to pay more as they started their college schooling. By projecting and planning these increases each year overtime, will make it fairer to all. However doing this may create surpluses in the short term which becomes an acquilles heel. Damm if you have it, damm if you don’t spend it and damm try saving it for a rainy day. The reason why we the citizens of each state are put on this financial rollercoaster ride.

I went to all of my classes at Texas…except my 8am class during my Freshman year. I have no idea why they scheduled an honors computer programming class at 8am, but they instructor saw me about once per month in class. Luckily, you could just read the book and learn to program on your own. I can admit this now because my parents are in Vegas for 5+ days and they probably won’t read this comment.
At Stanford I had times were I missed more than half of my classes every single week. But I had a good excuse–I took 3 classes scheduled at the same time (T/Th 9:30-11am) and 2 others scheduled right after that (T/Th 11am-12:30pm). All of the classes were offered only once per year and I only took 11 months to get my Masters degree, so I had to take them then.
Stanford has a really nice setup where every lecture was recorded and you could go to the library to watch the lectures anytime you wanted. One visiting professor had to replace a professor that got seriously ill and he spoke with the strongest Italian accent I’ve ever heard…I had to rewind all the time to understand what he said. For people who lived in the dorms they could watch the lectures in their rooms (televised for free on channels that the school used) or record them to watch them later. They could even call in to ask questions during the lecture. It is nice when a school has some money…

My favorite classes were Geography of Hawaii and Geography of Honolulu taught by Prof Abraham Piianaia. Interesting content, colorful person (I believe he was a merchant marine during the war – if memory serves me correctly), and hilarious stories that he told the class that had me cracking up all the time. Heard that he later was a crew member on the Hokulea years later and at a pretty late age. Very interesting person.
On a side note, one day in Prof Piianaia’s class, the first test of the semester, all of these football players show up. I’m listening to one player brief another one regarding the test and the info he’s passing is all wrong. “See what happens when you no come class!”

Grace’s Lunch Wagon was the place. Chicken katsu, extra salad, no chowfun. Used to inhale those plate lunches and not gain a pound. Heard that the original owners have a huge house in Port Lock or there abouts.
Back in the 70’s to early 80’s wasn’t the student section on the sidelines behind the football team with the band situated close by? Being attendance cannot average in the 40,000 like back then, why not have the students and band be closer to the team once again. Will that stimulate student interest?
In addition to promote more fans why not have the north end zone be $10.00 for all seats. First come first serve. Current season ticket holders can improve their seating if wanted to in the north end zone section &/or maintain their season tickets with a discount price of $15.00 per game. Also presell tickets to all schoold in Hawaii at $7.00. Going forward adjust the promotion and be sure to allow all these north end zone long time season ticket holders to get some benefit when tickets once again become in demand.
The north end zone is practically empty for most of the games anyway and maybe this will have an impact of creating new fans as well as increasing concession revenue.

Back in ’61, went to all my classes as a frosh; went to some of my classes as a soph; got kicked out after being on probation; got mad for being kicked out, rested a year and went back to UH in ’64; went to all my classes after that and finally got my sheepskin in ’66.
did anyone attend their college grad ceremony? I attended my hs one, but skipped my UH ceremony. So no pictures! First one to grad from college in my family, too.

35 years later and I still have those occasional nightmares about not having attended any of my classes but having to take the midterm only to not remember where the class room is anymore… I worked from 10:30pm to 7am mon-friday as the night auditor for the Beachcomber Hotel… booked the early classes till 1:30pm daily… slept when I could, rehearsed from 7-10pm daily for theater… I even worked at Mossman Gallery in Waikiki on the Weekend days.
Usually the nightmares are about my third semester Physics or Inorganic Chem classes…
Inorganic? I was into organics.
Don’t forget: unsupervised workouts are at 4 p.m.

Posted this on yesterday’s blog, but am so hot under the collar about the UH activity fee, that I decided to post again in case anybody missed it.
How horrible that UH would want all UH students to contribute to activities that they don’t like or don’t participate in directly! Let’s take this further to the real world. Why should I have to pay taxes for public schools, when I sent all 5 of my kids to a private one? Why should I have to pay the extra GET to pay for the Honolulu rail system (I do, when I buy something from Honolulu) when I live in Hilo? How come we have to subsidize Mass transit – I drive my own car? Why do I have to support a welfare system? And my biggest gripe, why should I have had to support our state’s effort to condemn private Hawaiian trust lands, so some of those same cherished lands could eventually end up in the hands of a billionaire Japanese speculator to turn into slums?
In the real world we all have to support a lot of things from which we get no direct or even objectional benefit. Grow up and and just bear it, or as my sister-in-law often tells my daughters – PUT ON YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES AND DEAL WITH IT!
Puuloke….that’s true…except that if you live in Hilo, you don’t pay the extra GET for rail transit…only those on Oahu pay that extra charge.

At UH, my business law class was taught by this young lawyer who was only 4-5 years older than the rest of us by the name of Patsy Mink.
I took a course in European history from this professor who was DULL and so I missed most of his classes. Got As in the quarterly exams but he gave me a D+ for the final grade. When I asked him why, he said that I missed most of his lectures. I countered that if I got As in the exams, I should get an A+ because I did well despite missing his lectures.
He raised it to a C – I didn’t buy his book on British Naval history either!

#123 (Jesse) James: Yes ,Professor Abe Piianaia was a one of a kind. Very approachable and down to earth guy. Real straight shooter, whose level-headed opinions sometimes clashed with the more radical elements in the Native Hawaiian community. He had lots of stories about how things from the “old days” affected things today, and you really gained an understanding of Hawaii’s history. He definitely was a Living Treasure. He passed away in 2003. I think his daughter, Ilima, also is a professor.

Today, many years after you graduated, college students have to absorb so much more information! I don’t know how they do it.
When I was in college, the history text books stopped at WWII. There was nothing about the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. Nor about the wars in the Middle East.
I wonder how thick these history text books are now?

Sadly Ilima Piianaia also passed away about four years ago. You are correct that she also taught at UH. I knew her and know her brother Gordon– a great family.
I attended a military academy for undergrad, so I attended nearly all of my classes. I attended all of my face to face grad school classes as well. I did take several grad school classes online. During my online classes, I was always logged in to the online classroom during class time, but I’ll admit to multi-tasking during class. Then again, my undergrad and graduate education were paid for by the U.S. taxpayers so I kind of owed it to them to actually attend classes.
I walked during my Academy graduation (didn’t really have a choice). I chose not to walk during my grad school commencement, but did attend the department’s party after the ceremony was over. 🙂

Nope… I was too progressive in the 70’s… my classes were loud and very active… all the other teachers complained… and when my classes scored higher than the top two levels in the standardized exams, they said I was cheating and teaching my kids the answers… to which I replied. “If I knew beforehand what the questions would be, I wouldn’t hesitate to teach them the answers.” So, I left, became a door-to-door office equipment salesperson/sales manager backpacked around the Western World for a year…..then ultimately went to Japan to teach. A poor man’s dream life. Now I’m paying for it.. 😉
GIGI: Other than history 101 (World) which is more or less a survey of Western Civ., most history courses are broken down into perhaps a semester course leading up to 1774, 1774 to the Civil War, then up to WWI, then onward to the 20th Century etc.
Curiously, a history of China would be only a year survey as would be Egyptian history though both civilizations were much much longer than the history of the US.
The Teaching Company has a bunch of lectures from various professors on DVDs, CDs etc which I listen to now-days and I like the ones on archaeology – probably because of my age!

I attended most of my classes. Tried hard to skip Organic Chem at least once per week because otherwise I didn’t have time for lunch. Trouble was I had a class in the same room right before, so sneaking out was hard. Prof’s name was Charles Hammer. You can guess his nickname among the students…
I just looked up the current tuition for Georgetown. Here’s the breakdown:
I think my tuition was somewhere around $5K back in the 80s.
OK, how many of you UH students took Psych 100 and waited till the last couple of weeks to start taking all the tests? Possibly the easiest class I ever took – unit mastery.
It was hard to skip class in grad school. Classes met once a week for 3 hrs. Miss a week and you missed a lot. One of the biostats profs was a Korean guy who’d been here for 30 years yet had a really thick accent. Took us about 3 weeks before we figured out what he was talking about.

They were at the Les and headed toward the softball field. And Coach Coolen was headed toward the back of the pool area with broom and dustpan in hand for some cleaning…

Chad Lopati is still going to AWC here in Yuma…still gotta earn his Associates, so he has another year here. I see him around with Isaiah Iuta and the rest of the local boys here. Actually, right now there are 7-8 local boys that play for AWC and our former recruit Jesse Williams too. T.J. Alofipo was attending AWC for a semester or two but I think he moved to Utah with family, he wasn’t playing football though.
Anyway, some other local boys of note that play here are Tyler Brown (Damien), Victor Fa’avae (Kapolei), Isaiah Iuta (Farrington), Fautua Lefiti (Castle), Chad Lopati (Kapolei), Benson Ma’afala (Mililani), Luke Spencer (Kapolei), and also Jesse Williams (Australia).
Jesse Williams is looking to join Wade Keli’ikipi at OU from what a good friend of his girlfriend told me…hope he plays for Warrior Green instead of Ugly Duck Green but who knows…
AT the Quarterback Club luncheon today:
Coach Coolen’s sister and her son were there, and his son Bo & daughter Demi. He told us a fun anecdote about getting ready for the ESPYs.
HPU’s Coach Nakasone was there, too, with his lovely wife, Donna. Both coaches spoke about their season and getting to the World Series’.
Coolen answered my question about how the donated money was spent on the road. EX.: They used it for the trip to the Oklahoma City Memorial. The girls were there for four hours and didn’t want to leave, but they had to play UCLA. The donated money did not diminish their UH budget.

I enthusiastically went to all my organic chemistry classes and sat in the front row (along with alot of other girls)…so I can get the best view of my professor who looked like Robert Redford. Needless to say, I got a D.

WassupDoc asked Coach Nakasone about an HPU – UH game. He said that they probably wouldn’t do it. They are limited to 3 games outside of D-II. W-Doc can elaborate more on his response.
If our fb players read our blog and later flunk out its the fault of all of you who posted that you didn’t go to class and graduated, some with honors. FB players will remind coach Mac that one of Hawaii’s most ardent booster, Stretch, never went to class and he stated, “I have my diploma and license” that’s all that matters.
On the positive note, UH recruiters call tell recruiters, it’s hard to get into UH, but once you get in, no need study and you can graduate in 4 years
Yup I never attended any of my classes at Harvard or Stanford.
Of course I was never invited to attend those classes either.
Except for my major classes, I rarely rarely attended college classes. Could be that’s why it took me eight years to graduate, true story. 15 years after I grad college, I would still get nightmares that I was failing a class, flunking a test or was being told I was not going to be able to grad.
When I woke up and remembered I already got the sheepskin, I would happily go back to sleep.
There will not be a Vegas line on the UH-USC game…or any of the other USC games this season.

Yes I attended all my classes for two Bachelors & one Master’s Degree at UH-Manoa. Have to admit I fell asleep couple dozen times as an undergraduate. My excuse is that back then, Art 101 & a 7:30 General Sci class were still taught at the Varsity Theater. Bad combination: comfortable seats, air-con & bright slides on-screen shown in the dark. That Art prof was very insecure & defensive; if you went to the benjyo when overhead lights were on, you’d get reamed out publicly because he thought you might be cutting class (prudent/akamai souls would go only when the lights were down).

43/46: The Samia Ohana still hoping that Moses will be allowed to play both football (2010) and baseball (2011). Our initial focus was to make sure his GPA/SAT scores were enough to get him accepted to UH and NCAA eligible and to prepare him to be a successful student. We are truly grateful for the full football scholarship and hope that he will be allowed to contribute to the baseball program as well- maybe as a DH to minimize worries of potential injury during baseball (because football is paying his tuition). Moses’ great-grandfather John Poleta Samia played baseball in Hawaii in the 1930s for the Chinese baseball team. It’s been a great journey in both sports- met so many awesome people and visited places we never would have seen if not for sports. Hard to let go of baseball when we still believe Mo can contribute. Mahalo to so many who have been so good to him. We are truly blessed!

During the Executive Session, the Board meets to be briefed by attorneys & others. No decisions are made.
Following the ES, the Board takes up many of the items discussed in the Executive Session. At that time, further public testimony will be accepted.
I’ve testified on perhaps half a dozen different issues over the past ten years or so. Only once was I asked followup questions.
Actually, there’s another issue in the Executive Session I’d like to know more about – the status of the various Capital Improvements Projects.
Re playing HPU in softball. The only way this can happen is to have Jim Donovan working with Bob Hogue, the Commissioner for the league in which the four Hawai`i schools play – HPU, Chaminade, BYUH, UH Hilo – to appeal to the NCAA for a waiver. Actually, I’d love to see all five schools play each other. However, the HPU coach feels that there’s too big a difference in the quality of the players in D-1 and D-2 schools to justify setting up a game or a tournament.

You’re right about Abe Pi’ianaia. He has a son Norman who recently retired from Matson as the captain on the R.J. Pfieffer, after many years as the skipper on the S.S. Matsonia. Capt. Pi’ianaia is a real gentleman who is one of the most respected individuals in the maritime profession. Maritime industry is a very tight knit community with a majority of the skippers being graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Of course the academy is the industries’ version of a Westpoint or Annapolis.
Norman’s brother Gordon, as Koakane said, was a tugboat captain, educator, and Hawaiian cultural consultant. Gordon also spent some time as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Volleyball team in the ’70’s.
All three Pi’ianaia’s played roles in some capacity with the Hokule’a and the Polynesian Voyaging Society,

Just curious, they were very close friends of my Pops. He golfed a lot with me and Pops, and we have been known to knock down more than our share of adult beverages. He always talked of running for office, and representing the little village he loved so much.

School was so small you would be found out really fast when absent
Most of my classes my Jr and Sr years were less than ten students and there were 37 in my graduating class from San Diego College for Men at USD
I drilled it into my kids heads, that no matter what else you do while enjoying college. GO TO Class. It is very difficult to not graduate when you attend class
Back then you had 8,9,10,11 o’Clock classes and maybe an afternoon lab
Now you can’t find a Friday class!
