This whole LeBron James decision show reminded me — on a local scale, of course — of Colt Brennan’s news conference in 2007.
Deep down, I was hoping James would stay in Cleveland, much like how it was important to UH fans that Brennan return for his senior season.
James, as expected, chose Miami

Mike Pettine, defensive coordinator of the New York J-E-T-S (Jets! Jets! Jets!), yesterday led a discussion/workshop with the Warrior football coaches. The workshop, in addition to an upcoming internship with with the Cincinnati Bengals, should be helpful to Dave Aranda, starting his first year as UH defensive coordinator.
Pettine is in town for the tomorrow night’s fourth Hawaii Football Scholarship Dinner at the Honolulu Country Club. (Call 224-0911 for ticket information.) One of the unique auction items is something called the Warrior experience, in which a person can attend team meetings, travel on the team bus and receive a field pass for a home game.

Getting advice from NFL coaches can only help Coach Aranda. It will be interesting to see the changes that Aranda makes with the Warrior D this season.
Masoli will not be going into the Supplemental Draft and he may end up at a WAC school like La Tech.
ESPN’s 12-year agreement with the ACC will make the ACC’s nonrevenue sports like softball get significantly more exposure than nonrevenue sports from other conferences. ESPN will have $1.86 billion reasons to promote ACC teams.
I saw the crawler on the ESPN/ACC deal this morning; thanks for giving it a little more clarity, Garret.

I heard Masoli is challenging the marijuana citation. From my understanding, Masoli was driving and the marijuana in question was found in the vehicle (glovebox). His pasenger, if not mistaken, was released. Wonder if the reason why Masoli is challenging the charge is because it wasn’t his? And the drama continues…

It is nice to talk about UH starting its own sports channel, but looking at the obstacles that Texas faces it is hard to see how UH could make any money from having a channel. Startup costs to create a sports channel are estimated to be between $15 million and $30 million…where is UH going to get that money? Oklahoma has already spent $3 million to try to get some production facilities ready in case they want their own sports channel, but the $3 million hasn’t gotten them anywhere close the facilities needed for a channel.

The UT Athletic Department makes a huge *profit* every year and they give some of that money to the University (and spend the rest on facility improvements). They aren’t funding the TV network with fees or special donations…they are spending their Athletic Department profit.
In the past decade UT spent a lot of money on facility upgrades (they spent much more on academic upgrades than athletic upgrades) instead of increasing their endowment. That *really* paid off for them when the stock market crashed and other endowments took a big hit. The facility investments have paid off into creating permanent increases in funding for Athletics (luxury boxes, increased seating, etc.) and Academics (new research facilities have attracted top-tier professors who bring in millions of funding for their research groups).
UH hasn’t been investing in Athletic facility upgrades much over the past few decades (with key exceptions like the SSC) and the state and UH haven’t even taken care of the huge backlog of maintenance issues for the labs, classrooms, and dorms. It is hard to grow the academic side until the basics are taken care of.

I think the infrastructure is there for a UH channel.
Oceanic/KFVE already has the live programming. It would need to add some coaches shows, roundtable discussion shows, etc.
It also would be a good idea to make it a university channel. A lot of the Upper Campus stuff can fill the hours.
As for money, add, say, a few bucks to your Oceanic bill, and there you go.

I think that Mack and Rolo have said the plan was for those 4 QBs to compete at the beginning of camp, with the top 2 chosen in about a week and the starting QB identified within 2 weeks of the start of camp. All the QBs need to be at the top of the game right away or they will be left behind…that gives a lot of incentive for the QBs to work hard this offseason.
Garret, I know most of the game time money will come from commercials but I really was suprized at how much a start up fee costs. What if a company like Oceanic or K5 does it and charges a premium? Will it make a huge difference since they already have the equipment? They could use UH students for most of their staff as part of their broadcast journalism class unless the unions object.
I can’t beleive that we have commercials during the PPV telecasts of UH games. Shouldn’t the fee that we are paying cover costs of running the broadcast?

I thought you were talking about UH starting a channel. If you mean that Oceanic should start a channel, that is a very different thing because Oceanic already has *some* (not nearly all!) of the infrastructure in place. Trouble is, an Oceanic channel would have the money going mainly to *Oceanic* and it would not be available to mainland fans.

It is debatable if Oceanic/K5 makes much money off its UH telecasts right now. They haven’t even gotten to the point of having every football game in HD, let alone get basketball, volleyball, softball, and the rest all in HD. Since UH has multiple games at the same time (sometimes 3 games are going on in the same night on campus in the spring), the channel would need at least 3 HD trucks…that is a *lot* of money.
Other huge expenses would be covering road games. Getting non-football road games in HD would come with a cost that the TV market in Hawaii might not be able to support. The added travel expenses make that even more expensive…and that equipment is *not* cheap to travel with.
Was there a practice this morning? Any reports?

The top 3 reasons that will lead to a successful UH football season.
1) Very Good Quaterback Passing Efficiency (whoever it is) of at least 150%. by comparison, Colt Brennan was over 170.0%
2) Positive turnover ratio (UH was terrible last year)
3) Scoring in the red zone. (UH was horrible last year)

I suppose the first thing I’d do is check to see if other cable networks around the World would be willing to add your station to their offerings. Then I’d register the station name and identification. Following that, I’d work it into the future contracts with Oceanic. Oceanic would help build it and deploy it while receiving most of the proceeds during the initial years. As time goes by, the percentage of the proceeds gradually swings to UH.
Recently I received an e-mail from Coach Bob Coolen saying that he would be speaking at the Quarterback Club on Monday, July 12, about the journey to the College World Series. I contacted Herman Stern, President/Head Coach, for more information.
For those of you who are Wahine softball supporters and can take a little extra time on Monday for the lunch, I urge that you attend.
BTW – I never heard of the Honolulu Quarterback Club before. Stern wrote that The Honolulu Quarterback Club is celebrating its 64th year as Hawaii’s only all-around Sports Enthusiasts’ Club and one of our purposes as listed in our constitution is to promote good sportsmanship and create a better understanding of various sports.
The Honolulu Quarterback Club Luncheon on Monday, July 12th., begins at 11:30 am at the Maple Garden Restaurant which is located at 909 Isenberg (near the corner of King and Isenberg directly across from the Old Stadium Park). There is free parking next to the Restaurant or on the street. The private room entrance is located at the rear-end of the parking lot.
The luncheon cost is $15.00 per person for members and guests which includes tax and gratuities.
The program itself begins around 12 noon after a short welcome. Each coach makes a 10 -15 prsentation and then will answer questions from the audience.
The dress code is very informal, Aloha Shirts, shorts, and slippers are welcome.
We welcome you and the “Wahine” softball team supporters with Aloha!

Rolo is aware of that, and all of the 11-on-11 scrimmages end with red-zona drills. Having some leapers in Darius Bright and Greg Salas will help. UH also has some elephant packages in the works.

Great article on LaBoy by ST. I always enjoyed watching LaBoy play, I hope he can do good with the 49ers. He and Sopoanga together will be great fun to watch.
I like Graves, too. But the one criticism I’ve heard is he abandons the pocket too quickly. He can make the throws, and his scrambling can buy time. But the offense is designed for patience.
I’ve been to all of the unsupervised workouts, and I actually think that the offensive line has a chance to be decent. Letuli is going to be very good. Austin Hansen is under-rated. I like Brett Leonard at guard. When he was being recruited, I thought he was too, uh, friendly. Not anymore. He’s got that toughness you like to see in an offensive linemen. Lefiti is out for the opener, but he’s got that fire you like to see in a center. Right now Adrian Thomas is running with the 1s, but you have to figure that Brysen Ginlack and Chauncy Winchester-Makainai are going to play somewhere. And that Pearl City guy looks good in workouts. Hey, it’s summer, and I’ve never liked Kool Aid. But I do have a thing for Passion Orange.

You need to see the Monday and Wednesday practices. Except for the absence of coaches, you would think they were regular practices.

Good health is just something that comes with no guarantees.
The guys in the office always ask me if Tommy Heffernan is doing a good job because it seems there are fewer injuries. The players tell me he’s doing a great job. But as far as injuries relating to good job, not sure of the correlation. I know a lot of muscle injuries during games come from lack of stretching or proper hydration. Each player has to know his body, and what he needs to do to get ready.
Hmmm… 45 years ago when UH was still trying to rebuild their football program that they killed in 61… Clark Shaughnessy the father of the T-formation flew in to give Hawaii a leg up. Today it’s Mouse Davis, the father of the Run-n-Shoot.

We had a fundraiser for AUW a few years ago. Robert Kekaula donated bumbucha laulau — stuffed with pork, chicken, beef. Big suckers. We were supposed to sell them for $5 apiece. But somebody screwed up on the scrip prices, and they ended up going for $2.50 each. We sold a hundred in about five minutes. Some people were buying 10 at a time.

In the final analysis Hawaii has had OUTSTANDING quaterbacks over the years in which we have been PRIVELAGED to watch their struggles, triumphs and accomplishments that lives with fond memories of many fans who watched their stellar play. We hope all is well with everyone of them as Stennis has passed away from colin cancer and Raphel Cherry has been sentence to prison UNFORTUNATELY !

I think it might be asking a lot for 3 players in their prime to voluntarily take a 12 to 15 million dollar pay-cut for the greater good. I remember when Jordan was making about 30 mill, Pippen was making about 6, wasn’t it? MJ could’ve given up 8-10 for his buddy to make things more equitable, but that wasn’t even considered. And Kobe would never even consider giving up a small slice to open up cap-room as he opted to threaten to leave & throw his coach and teammates under the bus before they miraculously got Gasol and now he’s happy. I’ve mentioned several times how much I respect what Adrian Klemm is doing at SMU and how I think he’d be the perfect candidate for UH if Gordy Shaw leaves. Not only did he do a great job as an OL coach with an inexperienced and young OL last season, he is turning out to be a tireless and effective recruiter.
Klemm is assigned to recruit several areas of California and he started off this week learning that the 6’7″, 299-pound OT that he recruited for SMU was denied admission. That must have been heartbreaking for Klemm because he put so much time with that recruit and the recruit cited Klemm as a big reason why he turned down offers from Pac-10 and Big 12 schools.
Klemm ended his week well–he got a 4-star LB to commit even though the recruit had offers from a lot of excellent teams including Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, and U-Dub. The recruit is from LA and UCLA was said to be leading for his recruiting, fending off USC. But even though all of the Pac-10 was persistently recruiting him, Klemm got him to commit to SMU today.
Klemm did a great job as a player for UH, has a Super Bowl ring, has proven himself as an OL coach in a similar offense, and has shown that he can get recruits in California to commit to a non-AQ school even when he has Pac-10 offers. I’d love for UH to be able to get him someday…

Like you mentioned, he cleared salary cap room, now he had the chips to play with, then he went after the pieces he needed to make the Heat a winner. He was successful because he had a plan. Now if UH has a plan and execute it from summer workouts and beyond, we can beat USC.

Klemm is making inroads in SoCal, with Eliminian on board, SMU will have two people familiar with SoCal. I am not sure if Eliminian can recruit face to face, but he can get leads and up dates with contact with coaches and friends.

When Colt came back for his senior year, I think it was one of the most selfless acts I’ve ever seen anyone make. He left a lot of money on the table in order to follow his heart. I pray he has a break out year this season. He truly deserves it.

Colt needs to find someone that will just let him play. Why fiddle with someone’s fundamentals if the fundamentals that they already have produces positive results. He was the most accurate passer at the combine yeta no one believed that the was an NFL quarterback. You’ll never know how well someone is until you give him a chance. Tim Chnag never got a chnace, Chad Owens never got a chance, and so far Colt Brennan hasn’t had a chance. Yet the league gives guys like JaMarcus Russell tons of reps and opportunities. Go figure.
“Look Like Tarzan, Play Like Jane.” – There are many intrinsic qualities that make up a good football player. But a player needs a chance to showcase those qualities in real game situations.

I think it was a snub at Cleveland. If LeBron wanted to remain, he could have made a pitch to Bpsh to accept a sign-and-trade with Cleveland. Or LeBron and Wade could have gone to Chicago. But it appears that James, Wade and Bosh colluded to stay together. And knowing Pat Riley, and the way this all panned out, don’t you think Wade served as an agent for Miami in all of this? If they acted in concert before the free-agent period, at it appeared they did, then would that not be considering tampering?

The city of Cleavland pinned all of their hopes and dreams on Lebron, who simply wants a championship. Looking at the Cleavland Caviler’s roster, Lebron didn’t have much of a choice if he wanted to get back to the finals. The Boston Celtics dropped Cleavland in five games. The Orlando beat them the year before to go to the finals against LA. Given that there was no improvement in the teams roster, Lebron really stood no chance of getting back to the finals any time soon. So in a word, I give Lebron a break on his choice to leave Cleavland for Miami.
