Depth relief

Earlier this year, the Warriors received grief for capping the number of defensive tackles they would pursue in recruiting.

But the Warriors had a two-fold strategy:

• They did not want to overload at a position. (Remember in 2005, when the Warriors had eight nose tackles, and a guy like Lawrence Wilson didn’t get to play?)

• They already have some players in the system. Haku Correa has emerged as rotation guy, and transfers Kaniela Tuipulotu and Josh Manapuna are expected to play extensively. A sleeper is David Hafoka, who missed all of last season because of a herniated disk. He underwent surgery, and now is physically fit to play. Hafoka gives the Warriors another hold-the-point defender.

It appears rest is a preferred — and effective — treatment for the Warriors. Safety Kenny Estes, who opted not to undergo surgery on an injured right shoulder, expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Best wishes to Kenny Estes as it seems he tends to find himself on the injured list more times than anyone would like.

I hope Hafoka and Masch can get into mix.

I feel pretty good about the Defense with the guys we have and the walk-ons. It’s the O-line that has me a bit worried. Hope they will show even greater improvement over last season. This has been a sore spot with UH over the past few seasons and one area that the opponents will surely put to the test first.

It does seem like UH is deep at the DT spot this season. I’m more worried about DE and LB since UH seems to have DT depth and experienced DBs.

It would be nice if UH had so many experienced players on the OL this season like they have at DT.

This article describes a little about the setup for the 11-on-11 scrimmages the Warriors have been having.

The NCAA allows football programs to set-up summer strength and conditioning programs, the catch?, coaches are not allowed to be anywhere near the practice vicinity. Yesterday the University of Hawaii football players were out in force as they started their strength and conditioning summer practices.

Everything is et-up before hand so the players know what drills to do and what to run, but it still takes leadership and dedication to pull something like this off. The players have to be dedicated and willing to take instructions from other players. So far – at least for Hawaii football, this has not been a problem.

  17. Cheyah! July 5, 2010 1:41 pm

I’m so looking forward to that too! Healing powers for all the Warriors! We should have a great DT rotation especially with great anchors like Meatoga & Tuipulotu.

” … Earlier this year, the Warriors received grief for capping the number of defensive tackles they would pursue in recruiting. ”

Yeah, I was wondering what the HEY was going on, after our no.1 commit reneged.

Then they went after another guy , who committed to pac 10. Then they went after an outer island guy who had already committed elsewhere; he turned down the offer.

At this point, I thought the staff was just grab-bagging.

    ST, thanks for the scoops.

  20. oldie July 5, 2010 1:48 pm

    Garret,

I guess that’s why there has to be strong leadership. Some the best Warrior teams had strong leaders within their ranks.

  22. Garret July 5, 2010 1:54 pm

Wow, kinda like menehune-style coaching, eh?

    LOL!

On one hand, I was glad to read ST’s report that 60+ Warriors participated in the unsupervised drills last week. However, I did think about how BSU gets 100% participation and that would be 100+ players…hopefully more Warriors participate in the workouts as the summer goes on.

  23. Garret July 5, 2010 2:13 pm

We’ve talked about how the WAC needs its bottom teams to improve in order for the conference to earn more respect. More importantly, if the bottom of the WAC cannot win nonconference games, then when UH beats them they don’t earn many computer points…and if UH loses, the computer ranking penalty is *severe*. So let me take a look at the bottom of the WAC and how they have scheduled this season.

SJSU *needs* to improve or they will keep dragging down the rest of the WAC in the computer rankings. However, their nonconference schedule really doesn’t seem to be worried about wins…it seems to be worried about balancing their budget.

SJSU has *2* nonconference home games…BOTH are against D-IAA teams! So, their home wins won’t give them *any* points with the computers.

SJSU’s road games are Alabama, Wisconsin, and Utah! They start the season at Alabama and at Wisconsin back-to-back…that should bring them $2 million and 2 losses and will bury them with the computers. Playing at Utah might give them a little money but WHEN they go 0-3 for their nonconference schedule (wins against D-IAA teams won’t count) they will be rated in the bottom 10 teams in the country by the computers.

It looks like SJSU doesn’t even care if they make a bowl game, and without a bowl game it will be hard for them to build their program. Assuming they lose their 3 nonconference road games and win their 2 nonconference home games (only 1 of the wins will count towards bowl eligibility), they will have to go 6-2 in the WAC to make a bowl game. So, taking the paychecks from Alabama, Wisconsin, and Utah and failing to schedule a home game against a D-IA nonconference team means they gave up their bowl hopes before the season began.

  24. mouthwash July 5, 2010 2:16 pm

looks like K Estes will be ready for training camp just in time to get another injury.

  25. Garret July 5, 2010 2:22 pm

NMSU is scheduled things *very* differently than SJSU. They don’t play a single D-IAA team and they aren’t taking a $1 million payday game against a SEC or Big 10 team.

They start with SDSU at home, play at UTEP, at Kansas, and also have New Mexico at home the week after they play BSU. Kansas might be paying them some money, but the Big 12 doesn’t have the same type of TV contract so they don’t pay the really big bucks like the SEC/Big 10.

So, NMSU doesn’t have a crazy schedule, which is good. Unfortunately, NMSU is representing the WAC in 2 games against the MWC…I’d rather have a different WAC team there. But NMSU could beat both of them and really boost the WAC, or they could lose both and inch the MWC closer to AQ status. The nice thing is they get both MWC teams at home.

It would be nice if NMSU could beat UTEP and/or Kansas, but those road games probably won’t go well. However, their home games against the dregs of the MWC are winnable and *important* to the WAC and MWC.

I’m going to be a big NMSU fan during those 2 games. Not only does the WAC needs the computer points (and needs to take away points from the MWC), but $9 million from the BCS is split up between the non-AQ conferences based on nonconference records. When any WAC team wins a nonconference game, it makes money for UH…if a MWC team beats a WAC team, it takes money away from UH and the rest of the WAC and gives it to BYU and the rest of the MWC.

  26. Garret July 5, 2010 2:26 pm

Utah State starts with a paycheck game at Oklahoma and then plays a D-IAA school at home. To the computers, Utah State will be 0-1 after that.

The other 2 nonconference games they have are at SDSU and BYU at home. Again, it is VERY important for WAC teams to beat MWC teams, so those 2 games are very important to both conferences.

I think that there are something like 12 games this season where the WAC plays the MWC. Does anybody think it is a coincidence that the MWC has 2 games against Utah State, 2 against NMSU, and 1 against SJSU? The MWC has to win nonconference games to get AQ status and they sure seem to “coincidentally” have a lot of games scheduled against the bottom of the WAC.

  27. Garret July 5, 2010 2:30 pm

Idaho is *not* one of the bottom teams in the WAC, but they were in the bottom group when their 2010 games were scheduled. Idaho has UNLV at home and plays at Colorado State…Idaho will be a very important representative in the WAC vs. MWC battle this season.

Idaho starts with a D-IAA team then plays their paycheck game at Nebraska. Their other nonconference game is at Western Michigan. At Western Michigan? Wow, that is not that attractive of a road trip and won’t bring many computer points even if they win.

  28. Garret July 5, 2010 2:32 pm

La Tech is playing at Hawaii this year but is only playing 12 games. They don’t have any games against the MWC–they start with a DI-AA team, earn some money at Texas A&M, then get Navy and Southern Miss at home. Assuming they lose at Texas A&M, they need to beat both Navy and Southern Miss or their computer ranking will be low for nonconference games.

  29. Garret July 5, 2010 2:36 pm

Nevada has REALLY struggled in conference games lately, but hopefully they do well this year because they play a WAC-high *3* MWC teams. They start with a D-IAA team and have Cal at home later (it is nice that they get a Pac-10 team to go to their stadium, especially one whose fans can drive to their stadium to help fill it).

The 3 games that *really* matter for the WAC are Nevada’s games against Colorado State at home and then at BYU and at UNLV. If Nevada could sweep against the MWC, or at least win 2 of those games, they would help the WAC and really hurt the MWC. If Nevada bombs in nonconfernce games again and then ends up #2 in the WAC behind BSU, then the WAC will have no credibility to the pollsters.

  30. Garret July 5, 2010 2:41 pm

Fresno State has 3 high-profile nonconference games once again, plus a D-IAA home game to balance their schedule a little. The only 3 games that will count for their computer ranking are Cincinnati at home, at Mississippi, and Illinois at home. If they sweep those games, it would be great for the WAC. If they lose all 3 big nonconference games (which has happened in the past) then their computer ranking and the WAC’s computer rating will get buried.

The WAC cannot afford for one of its top teams to lose so many nonconference games each year. It would be better for the conference if Fresno State had just 2 high-profile nonconference games and played a game against a MWC team like SDSU…hurt the MWC’s computer ranking while giving them a nonconference win.

    Garret,

Thanks for your analysis. I guess the bottom line is cheer for the WAC teams except when we’re playing them.

What about Boise St? Do they matter for the WAC or do they take their ratings with them? Is it okay to cheer against them?

  33. MichiganWarrior July 5, 2010 3:18 pm

Mahalo for the info, Garret. Saved me from going over it myself next month! We’ve been mentioning it ever since this realigning has subsided. The WAC has to win against the MWC, plus pull off some other non-conference upsets, or we’ll definitely be buried in mud.

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid July 5, 2010 3:35 pm

We’re gonna need all that D-line depth when USC comes to town. This looks like its going to be a strength on our team. Nice fresh strong bodies against USC’s O-line in the warm confines of Aloha is good thing!

  35. Pomai July 5, 2010 4:21 pm

Two team I don’t cheer for BYwhoo and BSyou, but if it means that it will help the Warriors to cheer for BSyou then I will, but it’ll hurt.

  36. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2010 4:29 pm

    Re: Boise State
Offseason participation is all about interpretation.
For UH, each player receives a book detailing the day-by-day workout schedule. So if you follow it, technically, you’re participating in the offseason program.
Boise always claims 100 percent. Then again, nobody has ever seen its offseason workout program.
I remember a coach once said that 100 percent of his players graduated. It turned out that he meant 100 percent of the players who completed his program. So, if you flunked out or transferred or just quit, you didn’t count.

  37. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 4:39 pm

I’ve heard talk that if you don’t come out for unsupervised summer practice at Boise, you don’t play. If that’s true, then certainly 100% of the Boise “players” show up for unsupervised summer practice.

Of the roster I published, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every player this summer. There are various workout periods; players may choose the workout that fits their schedule.

  43. Garret July 5, 2010 5:00 pm

What about Boise St? Do they matter for the WAC or do they take their ratings with them? Is it okay to cheer against them?

    Oldie,

BSU takes their rating with them, so cheer against them if you like. I’m kind of torn on this issue.

Reasons why it is good for BSU to win nonconference games:

    1. Higher computer rating for them gives UH a boost whether or not they win or lose against BSU. The perfect thing would be for BSU to win their nonconference games and then lose WAC games…but BSU doesn’t lose WAC games often.

    2. If they make a BCS bowl, the WAC gets $3 million to split (UH gets $375k, which is not a small amount).

    3. The WAC would get a bigger piece of the $9 million that all the non-AQ conferences split. At least for that portion, the WAC benefits from BSU’s season instead of the MWC.

    4. A highly ranked BSU gives the WAC more respect this season. If BSU loses a nonconference game and then goes undefeated in the WAC, the WAC will get *no* respect. If BSU is rated in the top 5, there is no shame in them going undefeated in the WAC…if they lose 2 nonconference games and then win the WAC, no WAC team will get respect.

Reasons why it would be good for BSU to lose nonconference games:

    1. The MWC will count BSU’s computer rating towards their AQ consideration. If the MWC gets AQ status, they will bury the WAC in recruiting.

    2. One of the BCS AQ criteria is the highest ranked team in a conference. If they go undefeated they could win the national title and the MWC would end up #1 in that AQ category. That would make their AQ appeal almost impossible to refuse.

    3. One of the BCS AQ criteria is the number of the teams in the top 25. If BSU loses a lot of games they won’t be ranked.

So, short term it would be good for UH for BSU to win. Long term, it might not matter to MWC’s AQ chances, but the MWC is hurt anytime one of their teams lose.

  44. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2010 5:00 pm

Saw Ryan Henry, Aaron Brown and Miah Ostrowski at the parade.

  45. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 5:02 pm

  46. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 5:12 pm

Boise State continues to do well even with the change in coaching staff. What’s their secret to sucess? Their blue turf? LOL

  47. Stephen Tsai July 5, 2010 5:14 pm

    Garret:
Thanks for spelling out the scenarios.
On the public-perception level, UH is helped if 1) it does well. 2) it beats Boise State.
And, of course, if those things happen, critics will question: 1) who UH played, and 2) BSU’s real value.

  48. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 5:14 pm

Did anyone see JJ’s interview on the L&L show when he was here for the Hawaii Bowl? JJ seemed really gung-ho on Moniz. He actually praised the QB’s talent.

  49. Dennis Halloran July 5, 2010 5:27 pm

As a follow up to tediosity, cheers are simple, repeatable and meaningful if used sparingly and timely
I was a yell leader at Mater Dei HS and USD and had a fabulous rooting section, of course that was 50 years ago.
Good examples are Texas A $ M, USC and any place that uses men yell leaders.
Oregon State used to have a group of committted rooters called the Tail Flappers
The secret for UH is getting a group of 100, 200 students following a knowledgeable leader and then making it attractive to be in that group and grow it!

  50. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 5:37 pm

I don’t know how much the athletics fee is for UH students, but it is not fair for students like my daughter who works Fridays and Saturdays, 12 hours each day. I think it will be a burden for a lot of students.

  53. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 5, 2010 5:59 pm

Gigi – I don’t have a kid in the public school system anymore, but I am still willing to pay my taxes – a lot more than $50 a semester – to support the school system. The proposed activity fee will not just support student athletes who compete in intercollegiate athletics but also it will help fund intramural athletics as well. The plan is in the works to establish a workout center on the upper campus – think 24 Hour Fitness or the YMVA – for students, faculty & staff. That should be open in about four years.

The fee item will be either be on the July or August Board of Regents meeting agenda – will post the information here as soon as it’s released – and I plan to testify in support of it with a modification – that a portion of the fee be set aside for cultural, artistic & non-classroom activities like world-reknowned guest lecturers, concerts, art exhibitions, etc., etc.

As far as we were able to determine earlier when this discussion came up, UH is the only FBS or D-1A school which does not charge a student activity fee.

BTW – the Rainbow baseball team as well as the Wahine softball, the two basketball teams, and the two volleyball games all play Monday, Thursday & Sunday games or matches.

  54. oldie July 5, 2010 6:09 pm

    Garret,

Thanks for the clarification on Boise St. I understand why you have mixed feelings.

I think I’ll just cheer against them. That’s just more fun.

  55. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 6:12 pm

    WDoc,

So it’s set at $50 per semester? Does that also include summer session?

  56. haka July 5, 2010 6:13 pm

D-line looks like they will have the depth to make a difference. Hafoka emerging as a force would be the x-factor.

With Lefiti unfortunately out, I would love to see us go BIG on the O-line. I am still hoping that LaCount gets in there to play.

Just an FYI. Don’t know if anything was posted earlier on the status of Blaze Soares, but I heard that he went to the Bears camp, but really didn’t get to show anything as he had some sort of leg injury and is no longer there.

    Go O-line!

  59. Kazz July 5, 2010 6:49 pm

Interesting thing about BSU is the fact that their softball program looks like its headed in the right direction and it would have been great to have a three or four-way battle every season for the WAC softball title.

Aside from their football program being strong, looks like their softball program, which only started two years ago can be consistently good every season.

Ok.. so BSU has TWO team sports that can be CONSISTENTLY good.

  60. Kazz July 5, 2010 6:50 pm

No one is interested in paying taxes.

  61. Kazz July 5, 2010 6:51 pm

    Gigi,

Does your daughter use the UH shuttle? Because she’s paying for that too.

  62. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 5, 2010 6:54 pm

    Gigi:

The proposed $50 charge has to be approved by the BOR. If it passes this summer, it will go into effect in the Spring, 2011, semester. As for summer school, I haven’t heard anything one way or another, but I do know that the University’s Outreach College in collaboration with Pacific New Media offers wonderful programs for both the University as well as the larger community – many of their offerings are free or very moderate cost – during the summer. Perhaps the fee could be used to help underwrite that cost.

  63. Kazz July 5, 2010 6:55 pm

    W-Doc,

If you are going to suggest that that $50.00 fee go towards other areas students can use in addition to athletics, then I personally believe that fee needs to be doubled to $100.00 a semester.

    Just my opinion.

  64. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 6:56 pm

    Gigi…

If the student activity fee makes the athletic department all that better, in years to come, when they shine, you daughter will be able to proudly say.. “Hey! Did you know? That’s my alma mater!” Sports is probably the biggest excuse/reason used for get together with old friends from school long after graduation. It’s also one of the easiest ways to make new ones, too. She may not be interested in Sports but her future beau might. Her kids might. Who knows? It’s one of those things if you don’t pay it, they’ll bury it in your tuition and add other surcharges to it.

  65. Pomai July 5, 2010 6:57 pm

For all of those who think the athletics fee is too much, just think if you had to pay for everything with no help from the tax payers.

  66. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 7:01 pm

How does ASUH feel about the proposed fee? Are they in favor of it?

  67. Kazz July 5, 2010 7:08 pm

Utah State’s student council or whatever they call it, actually voted on an INCREASE several years ago.

USU students pay up to around $230.00 for their student fees.

(I really don’t want to say what I am thinking.)

  68. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 7:29 pm

ASUH will never be in favor of more fees. That goes against the grain. When they did away with it during my final years at UH I was for it.. not against it.. but my voice was never heard. But everyone wants greater transparency regarding the money trail at UH.. this is a step in the right direction. If not an activity fee, there will ultimately be increases in tuition that will cover it, anyway. But you won’t see it and you’ll never know what percentage goes where and for what purpose. There’s a reason why virtually every school with an athletic program has an activity fee. The question shouldn’t be whether to have it but rather why don’t we have one when just about every other school with a D1 team does?

  69. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 7:31 pm

Student activity fees are a physical, monetized manifestation of “school spirit.” Some got it, some don’t.

  70. Pomai July 5, 2010 7:35 pm

If anything the ASUH should be abandoned.

  71. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 7:39 pm

North Texas student body also voted to increase their student activity fees to $20 a credit.. $240-360 a semester! And last season their team floundered. … Team Spirit.

  72. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 7:40 pm

    School Spirit…

  73. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 7:45 pm

Boy, tuition has really gone up since I was a student at UH. I had a 4 year State scholarship which paid the $110 per semester tuition. I thought THAT was high and was really grateful for the scholarship.

Daughter attended Medical Anthropology this summer. Wanted to attend 2nd session but could not afford the $900 tuition. Sad.

When we get our reverse mortgage next March, we will give her enough money to cover her student loan. But that will be it.

And, yes, MIH, I remember paying an activity fee back then, too.

  74. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 7:51 pm

I think the tuition for spring semester was $2,500.

  75. Garret July 5, 2010 7:56 pm

If the student activity fee makes the athletic department all that better, in years to come, when they shine, you daughter will be able to proudly say.. “Hey! Did you know? That’s my alma mater!”

    madeinhawaii,

The thing is, I don’t see how the student activity fee will make the Athletic Department *any* better than what it is now! Let us say the Athletic Department gets $1.9 million from the fee (unless WassupDoc or others gets it reduced further), that entire amount doesn’t cover the deficit. So, the Athletic Department won’t have a single *cent* extra to spend than what is has before the fee.

I view the student activity fee as actually a tuition increase, since all the money is going to Upper Campus (reducing the amount they have to subsidize the Athletic Department). However, raising tuition would get a lot of people upset…calling it a fee for the Athletic Department gets a lot of people like you to support it!

If they *really* wanted to help the Athletic Department, they would have made the fee $100 per semester. That would have gotten the Athletic Department out of their financial hole and UHAD would have more money to spend. However, I don’t think that it is a coincidence that the fee was set at a level that almost matched the Athletic Department’s deficit. JD is working hard to reduce the deficit, but his efforts and this fee will probably just get the Athletic Department to maybe break even.

I’ve also been told by a reliable source that some of the Athletic Fee is supposed to reduce the $10 million deficit that the Athletic Department has. If that is the case, that money will go to Upper Campus and UH’s Athletic Department will *still* have an annual deficit.

So, how does a $50/semester student activity fee actually improve the Athletic Department? The students will go for free now where some would have paid before. Athletic Scholarships will cost more. The 7% salary reductions that JD, Mack and the rest took will expire. UH’s Athletic Department will stay in a deficit and Upper Campus will take the money from the student fee and use it for whatever they wish.

  76. gigi-hawaii July 5, 2010 8:11 pm

Sounds like a hopeless case, Garret!

  77. Garret July 5, 2010 8:17 pm

    gigi,

It isn’t a hopeless case, at least UH’s Athletic Department will have less of a deficit. But to me this is really a tuition increase and not something that will actually help the Athletic Department.

  78. Garret July 5, 2010 8:19 pm

By the way, the ending of the 7% salary reductions has nothing to do with the student fee. That salary reduction was a temporary thing and is set to expire.

  79. whitey July 5, 2010 8:22 pm

The student athletic fees should be called student activities fee which should be $250 per year or $130 per semester. This would include the game tickets and whatever else the university sponsors for the students. This is a reasonable amount.

  80. whitey July 5, 2010 8:28 pm

I don’t know where UH has a policy on tuition that the students can dictate the cost, but I think it is a BOR decision with input from the administration, so why don’t they just do their job and help the university balance their deficit problems.

  81. whitey July 5, 2010 8:33 pm

running the university on a deficit will only compound their problems and will cost everyone more as long as the deficit continues. making simple or difficult decisions goes with the position, not the students.

  82. whitey July 5, 2010 8:36 pm

uh has a law school and somehow they have legal problems which they don’t know how to solve. why have law professors or school if they won’t help their own university???

utah state, nmsu & nevada are basketball first schools. their students could care less about football. reno was packed with them this year. you couldn’t probably give away football tickets at those stadiums but i bet the waiting list is huge to get into the student seat section for basketball.

  89. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 5, 2010 10:20 pm

Actually, the most significant way the future years’ deficits will be reduced over time is to change existing laws & administrative rules regarding sponsorships of all kinds of activities.

Also, the $50 fee is the cliched camel-nose-in-the-tent. In a year or two, it will be increased to $75 per semester as students begin to see the value they’re getting.

According to what I was told several months ago – and this may have changed – The distribution of the funding will be $25 per student per semester for AD previous years’ deficits and $25 per student per semester to the current year’s activities operating expenses whether it’s running an athletic program or other student services & programs. That’s about $950,000 a year to go towards reducing the earlier debt and another $950,000 ti address current fiscal needs.

Another way to make some money is to get a small portion of the consession income at Aloha Stadium. Some of the food & beverage booths are owned directly by Centerplate while others are leased out for specialty foods. I don’t know how what sort of percentage is paid to Centerplate, but they could definitely pay UH even 5% of their gross which could add up to as much as $100,000 a year in revenues. That income could be split 75-25 for football and general AD expenses.

As income grows through increased attendance and siignificantly increased financial contributions through UH Foundation – thanks to Don Weir’s new programs plus expanded endowment & other legacy programs – the current year’s deficit will grow smaller & smaller over time.

Done right, the older debt will be gone in five or six years and the department will be in the black by then.

Of course, that makes a HUGE assumption – winning teams in men’s basketball and football as well the other sports.

Is it doable? Yep – but it will take a lot of work on all of our parts – and whining on a blog does not count. And, quite frankly pay-per-view shouldn’t count either unless someone is physically challenged. However, this past season alone I counted more than 250 people in wheechairs or using walkers at all the different sports.

Off to bed – another busy, busy, busy day tomorrw.

  90. madeinhawaii July 5, 2010 10:26 pm

Gettng an activity fee is a start. $100 would have probably met with even greater resistance so, just getting a fee is an “improvement.” Over time, as with most things, this will be increased to meet with demand and perceived value and hopefully be somewhat more inline with what other schools are assessing. But it’s a good start.

    WassupDoc,

If $950k is going towards the $10.1 million deficit, that will take about a decade to fix that. That is fine, but all of that money is going to Upper Campus and the Athletic Department won’t see any of that part of the fee.

That means that the Athletic Department will get $950k more than it currently has, but when getting that they have been told that they need to balance their budget. The $950k is less than half of the $2+ million deficit. Centerplate might eventually provide an extra $100k like you say if UH gets concession money at Aloha Stadium (that is a big if!.

So, after getting the student activity fee, 55% of it immediately goes to Upper Campus and the students. The $950k that Athletic Department will get will require the Athletic Department to increase revenues and cut spending by $1 million or more. That means that the Athletic Department really isn’t going to be upgraded by the student activity fee.

It is also possible that the $950k will get reduced further as other people (like you) come up with things to spend that money on.

It is possible that the important thing is to get a fee now and UH can always increase it later. But it takes UH so long to get anything approved, that increase will be years from now. Also, they could double the fee to $100 and Upper Campus would *still* take all the money because so much of that money goes to reducing the deficit.

If it takes 10+ years before the fee gives the Athletic Department any extra money to spend, that is too long! Plus, all of the efforts by JD, Don Weir and others are not actually to help improve the Athletic Department…they are just trying to reduce the deficit, so all of the extra money they raise just goes to Upper Campus.

I hope that I am wrong about all of this. But this is just how things seem to me and I should just stop talking about it I guess.

    HiHo!

  110. mario July 6, 2010 6:10 am

The problem with the student fee is this. Until UH sports become self sustaining, the fees will become just another tax burden on others. I live in California and I have seen this type of “angle” used on the California state lottery that was supposed to help schools be upgraded with the profits. The problem is this. Prior to starting the lottery, the State used to put aside money to upgrade schools every year. We passed the law for a lottery to help put more money into the schools. As more money was made on the lottery, less money came out of the State to upgrade schools. So as the lottery started making money, less was given to the schools. So the people of California was bamboozled into passing the lottery into law. What most people do not know is that the schools get less money now than prior to the passing because law makers are shifting funds instead of being fiscally responsible prior to the meltdown of the economy. So yes, I see the “tax” helping out the school but until UH starts to become self sustaining as a business and stop spending stupid money like sending your whole marching band on the road, like to the Sugar Bowl, UH will always have money problems. I live in California and have been blown away because UH should have its own time slot nationally to play its home game and have the nation watch the last game on a Saturday. Why is this not capitalized by the school. It is in a unique situation but everyone always brings up problems about this instead of solutions. I understand that no individual TV contracts can be signed unless done by the WAC so why the hell is the WAC not taking advantage of this instead of charging a tax on students. Oh well!!! I digress……..

  111. Garret July 6, 2010 6:23 am

    mario,

*All* schools are required to send their bands and cheerleaders to the Sugar Bowl and every other BCS bowl. They are supposed to use the huge BCS payment to pay for that and still make a big profit. However, there was no reason for HF to have UH pay for employee’s families and some of the other people who went to the Sugar Bowl with UH’s money, so your point is a good one.

You are correct that in California (and elsewhere) the money raised “for education” from the lottery is really just an excuse for the state to reduce the money they used to spend on education. I’m not sure how the athletic fee at UH is any different, especially since Upper Campus is saying that the Athletic Department needs to cut spending or come up with $1+ million more after getting the fee.

The WAC *is* trying to get more TV money and the contract with ESPN was significantly increased 2 or so years ago. However, the WAC just doesn’t have much TV interest so whenever there has been open bidding on the TV rights the numbers come out much less than what the MWC or C-USA offer. The WAC could have gotten more money if they took an offer from CBSCS and VS, but it was felt that the exposure from ESPN would help the WAC and hurt the MWC over the years…but it sure hasn’t seemed to hurt the MWC’s recruiting or performance.

ESPN could have showed UH in a Saturday late night time slot for basically *free* this season, but THEY CHOSE NOT TO. So, how could the WAC get more money from ESPN for UH’s late night time slot when ESPN doesn’t even want to show the games for free?

  112. Pomai July 6, 2010 7:01 am

The other thing is that the Athletic Department is getting a bad rap for this student fee, because most people think all the money is going to the Department when it’s really going to upper campus, and you watch if by some chance the Athletic Department was to get in the black and actually start to make money soon there after you would see upper campus wanting to cut their budget even more.

One of the things that I strongly urge that people learn around here is how the budgeting process actually works at the University of Hawai`i System as well as across all state departments.

Furthermore, educate and inform yourself about state laws concerning funds transfers from one department to another and within a department from one program to another. That includes donations, endownments, and specific fundraisers as well as legislative allocations. The first two can have specific amendments attached at the request of the donor to move funds around – under limited circumstances; however, state law is very, very clear about spending money allocated for one program on another one.

Frankly, it torks me off to keep reading snarky comments from people about “upper campus” individuals who are stealing funds from the Department of Athletics to support programs in Kuykendahl or Suanders Halls.

How often have you examined the financial reports issued over the past eight years as to where the money has gone? These documents are all public records and available to the public.

What has happened is that the University of Hawai`i has covered all the losses in the Department of Athletics over the years. Now it’s time to start reducing the previous years’ deficits as well as reducing and eventually eliminating current & future fiscal years’ deficits.

All employees working in & fir the Department of Athletics itself are state employees. For every diollar of revenue coming in, well over 80 cents goes towards direct & indirect personnel costs such as salaries, retirement, medical insurance, cellphones, and food & parking fees while traveling off-campus on business. The rest of the money goes for items as diverse as student scholarships to utility bills to marketing.

There are only two ways to balance budgets no matter what kind of business: To increase revenues by increasing sales, donations or allocations in the case of public agencies, and prices of the product. The other way is to reduce expenses through staff reductions and to establish operational efficiencies.

Again, please take the time to educate and inform yourselves about how the State of Hawai`i and the University of Hawai`i are run financially.
