Got a minute?

Apparently, Jake Heun was in a rush.

The UH backup middle linebacker won his MMA fight yesterday in 41 seconds.

ESPN is reporting that the Mountain West is interesting in Kansas, Missouri and Kansas State. That goes against the initial feeling that the remaining members of the Big 12 would try to recruit Mountain West teams.

But if the Mountain West further expands, the WAC should make a strong pitch for Baylor. On a side note, the Stan Sheriff Center is supposed to be modeled after Baylor’s arena.

watching the Jake Heun news clip now (re-run)

  4. tediosity June 13, 2010 1:34 am

yeah, Baylor would be good. Plus got 3 former Hawaii players coaching on the football staff. Kim McCloud, Brian Norwood and Dino Babers. But I don’t think the WAC has any leverage.

  5. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 13, 2010 1:43 am

    carry over from last post…

Maybe Garret can comment on this better than I can. But what is to happen with our next TV contract with the loss of Boise?

Assuming our football program remains “idle” and Fresno and Neveda do not become the next Boise within the next 3-4 years.

For instance the Sun Belt conference (whom I know very little about) renewed a TV contract with ESPN in 2009 that was worth approximately $750,000…(what UH makes in ONE home game)…

Any thoughts? Has the AD or commish commented on a plan that would be in place if we don’t have that steady source of tv revenue?

    Nice win for Heun.

Good competition at middle linebacker, any reason the “backup” had to be applied here? Besides accuracy I mean.

Big 12 is BCS, MWC is not. Hard to see how that is going to work.

  10. Ralph June 13, 2010 3:10 am

I don’t see the big 12 teams joining the MWC, why give up AQ status for a conference wanting AQ status. The AQ doesn’t follow the teams, remains with the conference unless it folds entirely, then the realignment dictates who gets the AQ. Pac 10 to Pac 16 asking for 2 spots, one for each division. What will the big 10 or SEC ask for, then where does that leave the MWC.

  11. Ralph June 13, 2010 3:18 am

if the big 12 south moves to the big 10 or pac 10, the remnants of the big 12 are good basketball schools with better than average fb programs. Add Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis, teams close in proximity to Missouri with good basketball teams and up and coming fb programs with the exception of Memphis. Raid the MWC,add BYU, Utah and TCU, good mid major and improving fb teams. That’s 11 teams, with Memphis, BYU, Utah and TCU gaining immediate AQ status. Consider SMU, small stadium and arena but good academics in the Dallas market. They have the money and backing to increase their stadium with suites, etc.

  12. Ralph June 13, 2010 3:21 am

the Algeria coaches are lacking in emotion, it’s like they are watching a tennis match, their sub garnered a red card for a hand ball violation and one tilts his head, the other puts his hands to his face but no screaming.

  13. Ralph June 13, 2010 3:25 am

Syracuse and Rutgers looks too far away for big 12 consideration, but both offer the east market. Pitt could be a reach, good basketball and their fb is on par with the remaining big 12 teams.

  14. Bulla June 13, 2010 3:27 am

    good morning one and all,

congrats to Heun, way to get in and get out….WOW

  15. Garret June 13, 2010 3:57 am

There were multiple reports that the MWC contacted the Big 12 leftovers several days ago to let them know if their interest. Some of the Big 12 leftovers already said that they were not interested in the MWC…but if they have no other choice they might end up going there.

C-USA even contacted the Big 12 leftovers several days ago. Expressing interest doesn’t mean that it will happen–though it appears that Baylor will end up in C-USA if the Big 12 loses to the MWC.

The Big East expressed interest several days ago also. That could be a good option if the Big East gets raided.

If the conference is not dissolved, I can’t see the other teams leaving before they collect that $70+ million in exit fees…the schools leaving might be trying to dissolve the Big 12 to avoid the exit fees, though.

  16. Garret June 13, 2010 3:59 am

Baylor is *not* an option for the WAC. C-USA has 3x the TV money, much more basketball money, and offers a great travel situation. Baylor can drive to schools like SMU, Rice, and Houston.

  17. Garret June 13, 2010 4:04 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

The HSA reported yesterday that ESPN could reduce the *current* WAC TV contract after BSU is gone. The current deal has a lot of years left on it so I wouldn’t worry about the next TV contract…I’d worry how much lower ESPN would pay starting next year.

During the press conference announcing BSU going to the MWC, a ESPN reporter asked the MWC commissioner if they had an out clause in their TV contract and would be open to signing with ESPN. ESPN would happily dump the WAC for the MWC…remember, they offered the MWC a *lot* more money than they offered the WAC, and only offered the WAC a contract after the MWC said no and signed their mtn/VS/CBSCS deal.

Luckily for the WAC, the MWC is not an option for ESPN for several years. The trouble is that ESPN’s ratings for non-BSU games were low last season, so they might really decrease the money on the current contract and they might offer the MWC a lot more when their contract is up.

  18. Garret June 13, 2010 4:06 am

The Nevada Appeal has an article about the WAC’s options to replace BSU.

Heck if the Texas schools bolt to the Pac-10, why not take a run at Baylor? Baylor certainly would gave the WAC some name recognition if nothing else, though the MWC could take a run at the Bears.

I’m somewhat surprised that the Mountain West hasn’t added an 11th and 12th school so it could have a conference championship game in football. Geography wise, Fresno State and Nevada would be perfect for the MWC, but MWC officials don’t appear to be inclined to add any other WAC schools.

All the buzzing could lead to an interesting two months. It appears that schools want to make quick decisions on this. Blink and you may lose the conference of your choice.

  19. Garret June 13, 2010 4:09 am

U-Dub and Washington State support the Pac-16 expansion plans.

As recently as early spring, the Washington State University athletic director was retired on his ranch outside Spokane.

“Hey,” he said in response to a question about college-conference realignment. “You’ve got to remember, I was herding cattle three months ago.”

But the blinding speed at which the collegiate map is changing requires that administrators and fans be a quick study. Both Moos and Washington athletic director Scott Woodward are convinced a massive expansion of the Pac-10 Conference — by as early as Tuesday, it may grow by six programs — will be a positive development for both schools. Some estimates have a school in the Pac-16 earning an additional $20 million annually in TV revenue.

Moos likes the fact that a 16-team Pac-10 likely would set up an eight-team division with the old Pac-8 members — USC, UCLA, Stanford, California, plus the Oregon and Washington schools — with most competition between division members. And he and Woodward each would embrace the revenue projected from new television contracts — more than double what the Pac-10 members now realize.

  20. Garret June 13, 2010 4:10 am

The scheduling would have each Pac-8 school play *1* road football game per year against the other division. So, Washington would play in Austin only once every *4* years.

There would be multiple scheduling options in a 16-team league, but in general, most envision an emphasis on divisional play. For instance, in football, it’s likely Washington would play its other seven division members annually, and two from the other division. That means it’s possible, for instance, that UW fans could go as many as seven or eight years into the new format without seeing Texas at Husky Stadium.

  21. Garret June 13, 2010 4:24 am

Phil Steele says that UH has the #101 toughest schedule in D-IA. Strength of schedule is directly factored into the computer rankings for every team, which means that a weak schedule will lead to a poor computer ranking–kind of like the RPI in basketball. It is hard for UH to improve its computer ranking (and earn BCS points) with such a weak schedule…and if USC drops the UH game, UH’s SOS will drop a lot more.

  22. Garret June 13, 2010 4:26 am

Kansas newspaper says that the exact opposite of the ESPN report (that ST cites above) could happen.

An ESPN.com report early Saturday morning quoted Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson as saying that the MWC was frothing at the mouth to scoop up whatever Big 12 schools might remain should Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State head to the Pac-10, as expected.

Sources within the Mountain West, however, told the Journal-World late Saturday night that the exact opposite actually could happen. Instead of the MWC taking the Big 12’s castaways — Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State and Baylor — the Big 12 could absorb all 10 members of the Mountain West, including newly acquired Boise State, and move forward as a revamped Big 12.

  23. Garret June 13, 2010 4:27 am

As for the Mountain West schools, which, like the Big 12, have been together barely more than a decade, the idea of leaving the MWC behind would not be tough to swallow, the source said.

“With the opportunity to become a BCS conference, nearly immediately, and the fact that this conference, which has been on a united front throughout this whole thing, would remain united, I think the sentimentality carries very little weight,” the source said. “I think in a lot of ways it’s a best-case scenario for everyone involved.”

  24. Garret June 13, 2010 4:28 am

Houston or SMU might be added as the final team in the Big 12/MWC merger. If Utah goes to the Pac-16, then both Houston and SMU might be added.

Although the losses of Texas and Oklahoma would be tough to stomach, taking on the Mountain West schools could actually expand the markets the Big 12 reaches, especially if the Big 12’s five and the MWC’s 10 went after Houston or SMU, as the source indicated they would, as the 16th team in the revamped Big 12.

  25. Garret June 13, 2010 4:31 am

The 5 Big 12 leftovers and trying to work together to keep their conference…and AQ status.

Nobody from the schools is commenting publicly, but The Star learned athletic officials from five schools — KU, Mizzou, K-State, Iowa State and Baylor — were connected by conference call on Saturday to get a lay of the land.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Saturday that Big 12 North schools and Baylor were on the Mountain West radar, but a source close to the Big 12 said it might be the other way around.

“The Big 12 has an automatic qualifier to the BCS and the Mountain West doesn’t,” the source said. “Who would join whom?”

That’s assuming a reduced Big 12 could keep its BCS status and entry to the lucrative bowl system. The Mountain West, which added Boise State on Friday, is on track to receive that status but not until 2013. Remaining together to form the nucleus of a new Big 12 has been discussed among schools not headed to the Pac-10 with schools coming from roughly the current Big 12 footprint.

  27. mctruck June 13, 2010 5:53 am

  28. Annoddah Dave June 13, 2010 5:56 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

If MWC absorbs the remnants of the Big 12, then history might repeat itself and some of the schools may break away like how the MWC was formed from the the WAC that got too big. I am still hoping that, perhaps not in my life time, UH will be the anchor for the Asia-Pacific Athletic Conference! APAC will include universities in Australia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Eastern Russia, China, etc. like the East-West Center but for athletics.

  29. mctruck June 13, 2010 5:57 am

The way all of these geographic formulas are popping out, the WAC could consist of LaTech/smu/baylor/new mexico st, etc., in the east and whichever, in the west.

  33. Gonzo June 13, 2010 6:22 am

There’s a scenario floating around where the Big 12 and Mountain West merge under the banner of the Big 12. All 10 teams from the MWC and the 5 leftovers from the Big 12. They’d also look into picking up a 16th in either Houston or SMU.

It’s also possible the cream from the MWC leave to join the Big12 and leave the bottom behind.

This all depends on whether or not the Pac 16 happens and whether or not some combination of A&M/OK/Texas don’t go to the SEC. It also depends on whether or not Utah/BYU stay in the MWC.

Right now everyone is holding their breath to see what Texas does. Hawaii always chooses the wrong time to be bad, back when the MWC formed and again now. Sigh. We don’t have much to offer any conference besides the 66th largest TV market and high travel costs (at least we’re a school with very high research activity). If we could have somehow increased our visibility in Asia and added eyeballs and interest there (like June Jones wanted), as well as held onto JJ and have continued that maybe could’ve helped.

Bottom line is realignment is really bad for Hawaii. The gap between the haves and have nots will only get wider. Football money drives the athletic department, funds other non money making sports and boosts the Universities prestige and visibility. Look at what happened to Boise, enrollment increased after their success on the football field and may continue to do so because they’ll have the funding from the fans/community and the added revenue from a better TV deal.

  34. You Like June 13, 2010 6:32 am

I hope UNLV comes into conference so I got another excuse to go up every other year!!!!

  35. Pomai June 13, 2010 6:44 am

I was hoping that the big 12 would raid the mwc not take the whole conference, if that happens we are dead as far as improving the wac. the fresnecks and others in the wac are almost in as much trouble as us, I still like the idea of a wac and mwc merge, but imho for that to happen we need to find a way to subsidize the complete travel cost of the other teams.

  36. HNL June 13, 2010 7:06 am

I can’t see the big 12 picking up the bottom feeders in the mwc,and the leftovers of the big 12 leaving all that money on the table by breaking up the conference.

Anyone know what the revenue-sharing formula for the MWC? I know the WAC use to be 70/30 split for teams that went to a BCS bowl and is now 50/50 split with the conference.

Winning pretty much all the time in Football, Basketball and Baseball looks like the way for UH to be considered for inclusion in one of the prestigious, BCS-AQ leagues.

With all of this realignment being driven by money, TV markets etc. it begs the question: Where does the idea of a “level playing field” for all teams fit in this future?

This is clearly becoming a case of the haves and the have nots, where money is going to determine the quality of a team’s competitiveness, with many teams being shut out of the money by the currently evolving system.

Why is the NCAA being so quiet about this? Does “equal opportunity for all” play any part in this? Isn’t the NCAA the governing body which is tasked with maintaining standards of fairness in all of collegiate athletics?

Maybe there should be a legal mandate that the emerging super-conferences be comprised of a minimum percentage of schools in the “have not” category so that everbody gets a fair shake.

If collegiate ahtletics are to be driven by the pursuit of money rather than the spirit of competition, then the athletes involved should be paid accordingly and the sports at the collegiate level should be considered proffessional.

  52. Kazz June 13, 2010 9:38 am

But if the Mountain West further expands, the WAC should make a strong pitch for Baylor.

Good suggestion. ANY suggestion is a good suggestion at this time for the WAC.

Better than rolling over and taking IT in the okole.

Conference expansion is NOTHING more than a fine representation of how bad capitalism can get and that the student athlete, ALL student athletes come in a distant second to money and greed.

Amazing some people are OK with this concept.

The end of days is near indeed and such good timing. It seems humanity has lost it’s mind and as a society we need a good “cleansing”.

  53. madeinhawaii June 13, 2010 9:39 am

What the MWC move exemplifies is the pro-active stance that their commissioner amd head office has taken. Rather than wait to be plucked they are making the overtures to pluck, instead. That, however, now leaves the Big 12 with an opportunity to counter with their own offer whereby the MWC can shed their low performance members and the key members become part of the new BIG 12.

    DPK,

It’s no longer a question of “if” athletics is only driven by the pursuit of money because it is so obvious that it is.

We are in the WAC and that is it. I still believe that we could of had BSU’s GREAT football records and even their below average to/MEDIOCRE overall WAC basketball records and STILL, the mainlanders do not like the travel or the cost… That’s why we need to support the WAC’s efforts in pursuing teams in the FBS first.

But back to the REAL issue. Again, I state that it is SAD and PATHETIC that there are people that see nothing wrong with this. It is SAD and PATHETIC that the NCAA’s supposed mission of putting the student athlete first has DIED.

It’s SAD and PATHETIC that the student athletes of non-revenue sports that STILL CONTRIBUTE to the university on an athletic and academic standpoint stand the risk of losing their right to earn the privelege to play their sport at the NCAA level because their university is 2,500 miles away from the nearest mass of land that feeds off of the negativity capitalism produces.

Again, all the individuals that stand to make so much money off these mega conferences, I hope they’ve made their peace with their loved ones. In the end, I hope they can still afford to purchase air conditioning in hell.

The BIG 12 should take some of that money they will get from those teams leaving and pour it into getting Notre Dame… that would be a coup… ND could ultimately or eventually “own” the BIG 12 and its presence there could ensure the BIG 12 continuity by attracting other teams into the fold.

  61. A-House June 13, 2010 10:02 am

Mike Candrea, Arizona SB coach. What a cry babynow that UH has busted his “HR record of 135” by belting 158 in 2010!

Rather than praise the Na Wahine, he seeks to have the bats “outlawed”. The bat is but one element in softball; consider the pitcher, abilities of each batter; their off-season regimen; etc. Is it Na Wahine’s fault that nearly every batter in the line up has the potential to hit a homerun? Damn, give credit when it’s due.

It is apparent that Arizona will NEVER break the Na Wahine’s record; yet what were his comments in 2009 when his team broke the then NCAA record?

Com’on coach, why don’t you recruit players who can hit the long ball, teach them how to hit at the collegiate level, and improve their off-season workout instead of “crying” over a bat!!!

Over the years the NFL and NBA have made rule changes emphasing scoring to spur fan interest. These guys do it for money and know what fans want. Now women’s softball think they know different? Why don’t we just take away their bats and let them kick the softball around the field.

all this going on with the conference shake ups and the WAC still hasn’t done anything. The MWC asking the remaining Big 12 to join them seems to me that the Big 12 would be laughing behind their backs, but at least they are not standing still like the WAC. the Big 12 asking the MWC elite to combine with the Big 12 would be more suitable in their eyes. then Hawaii could join the remaining MWC teams along with Fresno and Nevada to reap their TV contract money. by sitting still and being content with adding Cal-Davis, Portland State, Cal-Poly, etc. just doesn’t cut it from a fans point of view. still, trying to look on the bright side of adding these small schools, didn’t Boise State come into the WAC as a D2 team, and started dominating WAC football? but can you see Cal-Poly or Portland State beating USC or Oklahoma or Texas, etc. in a regular season game?

Reardon had a perfect quote in his column on the issue where he simply states that “it’s ok when Arizona sets the HR record, but not ok for upstart Hawaii”.

That has been the theme of the “haves and the have nots” lately and was the theme of the Wahine during the Super Regionals.

Bob Coolen was possibly the ONLY coach in D1 womens softball that took LEGAL advantage of the bat technology and he’s supposed to be some kind of “cheater”, well, “cheater” according to stuffy ESPN folk and one jerk of a coach in the state of Arizona.

Combine bat technology with the athletes to execute with deadly power and what do you get? 158 home runs!

So what’s next? Will they explore if the Wahine’s workout techniques in the weight room are “too much”? 🙄

    What a bunch of garbage!

all this going on with the conference shake ups and the WAC still hasn’t done anything.

Portland State? Perhaps? Down the line. Who thought BSU could have done what they did when they entered the WAC?

Show me that guy that predicted that and maybe I’ll find a reason to go Vegas.

Difference with Boise St is that they were a “power” at the DII level for 3-5 years before making the jump to the WAC.

Their first year was an adjustment, their overall record was below 50%, but after that must give credit to the coaching staff as they adjusted well and become the dominant power in football.

Cannot say the same for Portland St, Texas St, etc.

I contradict myself when I said it would be possible for a Portland State to become a national contender like a Boise State.

It’s so obvious and I have been saying it that the current college football landscape doesn’t allow for this. Portland State is amongst the “have nots”. College football is apparently becoming the place where have nots cannot and will not be allowed to succeed and college football is becoming a place where the rich go to thrive and the not so rich go to die.

Football, Baseball, Basketball(men’s and women’s), and Volleyball (men’s and women’s). Otherwise the State will always look back and say.. “We could’ve been somebody.. we could’ve been a contender.”

    GO UH!
Me and my roomies all have Hawaii connections. We all follow the Warriors and root like hell. Except for one of us who has hade it up to here with what he sees as the Warriors failure to go BIG Time. He posted to another blog this morning and when I saw it, I decided to pass it on. Sounds like he’s down on the U. of Hawaii football program, but he really isn’t. English majors always get a bit carried away. Here it is.

    WestCoaster says:
June 13th, 2010 at 12:30 pm 76..The big problem w/ the WAC is the downright laziness and lack of vision of it’s various administrators. Particularly Hawaii. I’m long aware of UH because of relatives who reside and have played there. Man, I can tell ya – they’re frustrated as hell. Seems that UH is a ’stealth’ football program; it’s there, but you just can’t see it. The people who run the program (the politicians) can’t accept anything other than the idea of being a successful mediocre football program.

For Hawaii ever to be successful in football, they have to scratch their
fixation on having most of their games on Saturday nights. Too late to get their games on the mainland’s Sat. evening news and getting only a one-sentence mention in the Sunday or Monday paper – if at all.

The politicians won’t allow UH to surplant the local high schools by playing on a Friday noon or evening. Or even a early Saturday. Therefore a player recruited to UH is unlikely to get much national exposure, if at all. He disappears. But UH is content w/ that.

The only way for Hawaii to move up and get known is to become a tough “road warrior” team, willing to recruit fast (an unknown quality at UH), tough, first-line players who can make UH known by spending a lot of time on the mainland battling the likes of UCLA, Ohio State, Florida State, etc. A team that makes people say, ” gotta watch that game. that UH has those big monster Polynesian linemen and those big, fast mainland running backs. gonna be a game worth watchin’ ” But my two uncles, ex-UH players, are doubtful that UH has the self-confidence and determination to overcome it’s commitment to mediocrity. Look at what Fresno State is doing; it’s taken some time and some hard lumps, but they are finally getting respect – and recruiting the kind of players needed to jump up the last notch to become a top-line football program. Another 3 or 4 years and FSU is
going to be up there w/ USC and Oregon ( but tougher ).

The first thing the WAC shoulod do is put Heavy pressure on UH, Nevada and San Jose State to upgrade their facilities ( heard UH’s are worse than a lot of inner-city high schools ), hire top-notch coaches and recruit first-line players. And get bigger stadiums. Cal Poly and the rest should all get together and REALLY commit to getting bigger and better – and do it FAST instead of mumbling about it for the next two to five years.

But UH should stop doing things on “Hawaiian time” and move forward quickly. Or is that like asking a snail to pole-vault?

  92. Garret June 13, 2010 12:11 pm

Remember how the Pac-10 commissioner was going to the 3 Texas schools today to invite them to the Pac-10? Texas A&M turned down the Pac-10 when he presented the invitation.

Texas A&M turned down invite to join P10 in mtg today with P10’s Larry Scott and Kevin Weiberg in College Station, a Big 12 AD confirms.

  93. Garret June 13, 2010 12:15 pm

The Big 12 Commissioner has been *busy*! He pulled a rabbit out of his hat and may somehow get the Big 12’s TV deal to match the SEC’s TV deal…and he’ll let Texas start the TV channel they have wanted to start. Texas was going to have to give up its dream to have its own TV channel, but the Big 12 is using that carrot as a way to keep Texas in the conference.

Beebe has secured information that enough money could be inked in its next TV negotiation (in 2011) that revenues per school would jump from between $7 million and $10 million in the Big 12 currently to $17 million, which is what the SEC pays out.

Individal institutions would be allowed to pursue their own networks, which has been a goal of Texas. If the Longhorns went to the Pac-10, they would have to forgo their own distribution platforms, including a network, because the Pac-16 would seek to have a conference network in which all inventory is shared.

(Consultants have put Texas’ ability to generate revenue from its own network at between $3 million and $5 million after a start-up window of about three years.)

  94. Garret June 13, 2010 12:16 pm

Because Colorado was such a bottom-feeder for the Big 12, losing Colorado and Nebraska actually would result in the rest of the Big 12 schools getting *more* money.

The loss of Nebraska and Colorado should have been a loss of about 16 percent to the league’s revenue generating capacity. But because Colorado was an underperformer, the league lost only about 8.6 percent of its value with the loss of Nebraska, according to sources with knowledge of the Beebe Plan.

  95. Garret June 13, 2010 12:18 pm

If the Big 12 stays together and the Pac-10 adds Utah, that might make things stable for a few years in conference expansion. That gives UH time to earn BCS points by winning football games and gives certain other things a chance to improve for UH.

OU, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State have indicated they would stay with Texas. Up to this point, that appeared to be an announcement to join the Pac-10, starting as early as Tuesday of this week.

But with news that Texas is now seriously considering the Beebe Plan, there is a growing chance the Big 12, which is now at 10 schools (the Big Ten, by the way, is now at 12 schools) just might survive after all.

  96. d1島 June 13, 2010 12:20 pm

    Congratulations to UCLA!

It seems now they are no longer the #2 team flying outta LAX and seemed poised to take their place alongside Ohio State and Florida St., etc….

  97. Garret June 13, 2010 12:20 pm

Another example of how the MWC schools are distancing themselves from the WAC–while NMSU is cutting $3 million from their Athletic Department budget, Wyoming is about to complete its luxury boxes for their football stadium. That will bring their Athletic Department a *lot* of money each year. Here are some photos of the almost-finished luxury boxes.

  98. Garret June 13, 2010 12:22 pm

BSU joining the MWC might result in less TV money for the WAC (HSA reported that ESPN could drop the TV rights fee for the WAC now that BSU left) and *more* TV money for the MWC.

The Mountain West Conference hopes to increase its television rights fee with the addition of Boise State in 2011.

Commissioner Craig Thompson said Friday that the league’s contract with Versus and CBS College Sports allows for renegotiation of the fee if members are added or subtracted. The conference can’t, and doesn’t want to, opt out of the deal, he said.

The contract is worth $12 million per year through 2015-16 with an additional four-year option – $8 million per year more than the WAC. Boise State football has been a popular property for ESPN under the WAC TV contract.

“I can’t put a price tag on that, but they’re a great value,” Thompson said.

  99. madeinhawaii June 13, 2010 12:23 pm

    madink,

Much of what your friend says is kind of dated, though. The facilities have been upgraded.. the new AD and Chancellor are more pro-active than what we’ve become accustomed to… and NOV is election year for a NEW Governor! This time hopefully we’ll get one with real ties to UH..

  100. Garret June 13, 2010 12:23 pm

So, the Big 10 might stop at 12 teams for awhile and the Big 12 might stop at 10 teams for awhile. Things will change in the next round of expansion, but if the Big 12 sticks together that might not change for awhile.

  101. d1島 June 13, 2010 12:26 pm

English Majors sure don’t write like I remember…I tell ya! That’s frustrating as hell….Man!

But if you feel otherwise feel free to surplant my thinking with your own, it’s an open blog….

    heheheh

  102. Garret June 13, 2010 12:26 pm

Complaining about UH’s facilities seems odd when Idaho plays in a tiny stadium and NMSU cuts $3 million from its Athletic budget. NMSU asked its fans to bring juice boxes and snacks to practice because they couldn’t afford to feed their players…and that was BEFORE they cut their Athletic budget millions more.

  103. d1島 June 13, 2010 12:29 pm

  104. Garret June 13, 2010 12:31 pm

The SEC publicly offered to let Texas have its own TV network if they joined them, but Texas didn’t want to join them due to Academics. The Pac-10 TV network (and the Big 10 TV network) would prevent Texas from having its own TV network. However, the Big 12 offering to match the SEC’s TV money *and* let Texas have its own TV network may potentially keep college football realignment from going crazy.

  105. bb June 13, 2010 12:32 pm

    Mark my words..by 2013

Football Leagues in order of rank

    1. NFL (Obviously the best of the best)
2 Uber Conferences (Pac-16, SEC, Big Ten, ACC) Each with 16 teams. They will play one another and only one another. Because of their Uber nature they won’t schedule outside of the Uber Super League. They will have a playoff to determine their own Uber Conference Championship. They will allow payment to players. NOT PART OF THE NCAA but funded and subsidized by the NFL. AAA Baseball equivalent. One step below NFL.
3 Everybody Else Conference. Hopefully we end up here. These schools will still follow NCAA bylaws and rules. They will play one another and will have no part of Uber Conference league. Hopefully Hawaii can do their best to become the best of everybody else.

  106. Garret June 13, 2010 12:32 pm

    d1shima,

Wyoming actually has a hitching post outside of their stadium for people to tie their horses to. That might be removed when the stadium in finished with its remodeling. They also have a long bar in the luxury boxes for alcohol distribution…$$$.

  107. 808ike June 13, 2010 12:32 pm

Politicians from Texas, Kansas, Missouri and Cali just to name a few, are involved
in the landscape of realignment. Here’s a multiple-choice question.

    Where’s Hawaii’s politicians?

    A) On vacation.
    B) In hiding to avoid the crisis.
    C) Have no clue.
    D) Don’t care.
    E) All of the above.

  108. Garret June 13, 2010 12:35 pm

If Texas stays in the Big 12, then the SEC will stay at 12 (since Texas A&M will probably stay in the conference), the Pac-10 will stop at 12, the Big 10 will stop at 12, and the Big East and ACC will breathe a sigh of relief that they won’t be raided. The age of superconferences will be delayed.

Nobody expects that the Big 12 would *stay* at 10 teams, especially with a TV network that would increase in value if they add the right teams. Colorado didn’t bring enough TV sets…would Memphis with its good basketball team (and $10 million/year from FedEx)? Louisville or others might be added to get to 12 for the Big 12, but those minor additions wouldn’t cause things to go crazy at least.

If the Big 12 wants to get to 12 teams, they could add BYU like has been rumored for a long time. That would actually be *good* for the WAC since if the MWC lost both Utah and BYU they wouldn’t be as far ahead of the WAC anymore. Maybe BYU and Memphis or BYU and Louisville would complete the Big 12.

Sadly, the strength of BSU and TCU means that the MWC would still pass 2 of the 3 requirements for AQ status, and if they add another team with a strong record (Houston or Fresno have the highest computer rankings the last time I checked) they could still get AQ status with the appeal process.

The Pac-10 would then need to raid the MWC–Utah, TCU, maybe New Mexico.

Then the MWC leftovers could be forced to join with the WAC.

By the way, it is *not* correct to say that the Hawaii Legislature is not trying to do anything. I happen to know of members of the Senate and House in Hawaii that have been working on something big, but things do not happen quickly when you want to do something big and we need to avoid things going to heck for UH before things can change.

I wish I could say more. But saying more would probably be bad for UH so I know UH fans would understand…the only reason I said this much is because the perception that the legislature is doing nothing is unfair in this case.

  122. Garret June 13, 2010 1:05 pm

madeinhawaii is correct–UH asked for autonomy, which was popular with UH fans at the time because they wanted the Legislature to stay out of UH’s way. That feeling changed while HF was AD.

Remember the session with the Legislature when they asked HF to tell them what UH needed so the Legislature could fund whatever UH Athletics needed? HF’s answer was “no thanks”, UH Athletics was fine. $#%@

    Garret,

Many coaches said camp isn’t enough time to prepare the team. Many start their
season with practice teams like Arkansas Little Rock and etc.

Someone( don’t remember who ) brought up starting UH season earlier with the
    approval of the NCAA.

    1. UH can start the season 2 weeks earlier. Only 1 game can be played in that time
span. UH and the other team can start fall camp 2weeks earlier.

    2. All other teams playing in Hawaii, can have an extra week of practice. This is similar to the extra game in the past.

    Just a thought.

  126. 808ike June 13, 2010 1:15 pm

Herman the Hermit just stared at his computer in this office!

  127. Garret June 13, 2010 1:16 pm

    808ike,

Why would the NCAA give UH a competitive advantage over every other D-IA school? Having an extra week to prepare would be a HUGE advantage. I cannot see why any other school would support that…and if we were fans of any school located outside of Hawaii *we* wouldn’t support that either.

EVERY school would like to have an extra week of practice. Why should only UH and teams that play in Hawaii get it?

    Thanks for impute.

    Esme out.

  132. Garret June 13, 2010 1:25 pm

    808ike,

That was an idea that has been floated in the past, but giving competitive advantages to one team over the other 119 D-IA teams just isn’t feasible.

  133. oldie June 13, 2010 1:26 pm

    Garret,

Thanks for all your post re: conference re-alignment. Without your posts, I think it would be hard for a lot of us to keep up with what’s happening.

Regarding trying to help Hawaii, isn’t that why the Hawaii (and Alaska) exemptions occurred in the first place?

Seemed to be lost with all the talk about football, Hawaii also has an exemption in basketball that allow visiting teams to schedule additional games when they play in Hawaii. Still of some value since the basketball schedules aren’t as packed as the football ones.

  134. A-joe June 13, 2010 1:27 pm

This realignment speculation crap is sooo deep in here I can’t even see anyone’s head! Everyone’s buried so far under I’m amazed any of you can even breath! Much less with a 10 foot snorkel!

I could care less how all these realignments play out. I don’t care what league any team is associated with last year, today nor next year. TV contracts, money doesn’t concern me. All I wanna know is who’s got the balls to line up across from us come each Saturday and will we be ready to step up to the challenge.

Who da hell cares where Texas wants to be if we can’t even beat Idaho.

  135. Ralph June 13, 2010 1:29 pm

808Ike I agree with Garret, I can see your desire to help out UH but it all comes down to the athletes spending their summer months in conditioning, voluntary workouts, weight training, and studying videos, come fall practice, the coaches can build an offensive and defensive unit quickly without spending time on conditioning and running the very basic formations to get players up to speed.

  137. Garret June 13, 2010 1:39 pm

    A-Joe,

I understand what you are saying, and you are correct that the most important thing is that the football players are doing all they can this offseason and that the team wins this fall. However, it is possible that a decision that Texas makes on Tuesday would start a chain of dominoes that would result in teams like UNLV and SDSU being in a conference with UH. That is why I follow this stuff closely.

  138. papajoe2 June 13, 2010 1:40 pm

how much does Oceanic Cable and K5 pay UH? are the telecasts available for subscription on the mainland? this sounds like what Texas is trying to do but, obviously, on a larger scale with a larger market. are we (UH) that far away with the TV packages to the mainland and the orient? Televising more sports to the orient and even Australia and New Zealand, that would be compatible to their society like soccer, water polo, softball, baseball, track, etc. would maybe, give us a boost, not only financially but also with recruiting and would be good for the visitor industry too. i know that a lot of people in foreign countries would like to get an American college education. the television companies would start off slow, but once it catches on in their country, ca ching!! the visitor industry could also help the university financially with the TV package so they could advertise Hawaii as a destination. this would have to bring a lot of people together like the University of Hawaii administration, Governor, visitor industry, Tv stations, etc., so it will remain just a dream. what the heck. the governor and mayor take numerous trips to the mainland and orient to try to get visitors to come here anyway. with hotels, beach activities, cruises, great weather, and even the educational aspecs like the telescopes on Mauna Kea, the University of Hawaii world renown lab ventures, etc.. come on Hawaii. put this all together. this dream could be almost endless. we advertise Hawaii on the Pro Bowl, Golf Tournaments, and whatever, why not through the University of Hawaii. University students could make up commercials. students could be apart of the marketing and financing part. just think how this could bring the whole state together. One TV stations uses the term “THINK ABOUT IT.”

  139. Garret June 13, 2010 1:42 pm

The Big East is a BCS AQ conference with 16 basketball schools and 9 football schools. One crazy thing I just read about is that if they lose just *2* football schools, their entire conference may dissolve! That is a clause in their conference rules…with the Big 10 expected to take Rutgers and/or Syracuse, and the Big 12 possibly wanting Louisville, that could end the Big East conference and set off all types of dominoes!

A source with knowledge of the agreement that was entered into by the Big East schools following the ACC raid of 2003 states that in the event that 2 football members leave the conference, the football and non-football members can split the league without any penalty and retain their respective revenues, such as NCAA Tournament distributions. What is surprising is that the Catholic non-football members comprise the faction that is pushing the issue. If you recall, those schools met back in March to discuss “contingency plans”. Apparently, the Catholic schools have decided that they will exercise the split option if 2 Big East schools leave the conference (no matter who they might be) and have informed Big East commissioner John Marinatto as such. Financially, the Catholic schools would actually be in a fine position because they would have a large reserve of NCAA Tournament credits with Georgetown and Villanova having both made it to the Final Four in the last 4 years. There is also the stability and cultural fit standpoint, where the Catholic schools are not enthralled with the “usual suspects” of Big East expansion candidates from Conference USA.

  140. Ralph June 13, 2010 1:46 pm

good point A Joe, except, if the alignment further impacts the WAC, do we have a conference to play in. We lost Boise, chances are we won’t lose Fresno and Nevada, but if we do, we’d be down to 6 teams and no fore seeable opponents to schedule for a 13 game season. Large super conferences won’t have too many slots open for non conference games. Big tuesday, if Texas leaves the big 12, realignment will impact UH schedule or scheduling. Our players can strap it up, but who will be across the line of scrimmage in 2011, 2012, etc. The pac 10 schools might have to pull out to play their in conference games. The pac 10 teams played each other every season, 9 games, 3 non conference. Pac 12, 11 conference games, 1 non conference game per team, unless they split into divisions. So Texas is a must if a fan wants to know what will happen to UH football.

  141. Garret June 13, 2010 1:55 pm

    Ralph,

But A-Joe is correct also…if UH doesn’t win in football, no conference will want them. So, the most important thing is for UH to win–unless realignment occurs too quickly and nothing UH does on the field will matter.

  142. Pomai June 13, 2010 2:12 pm

Let’s keep playing Warrior football and trust that JD will give us as good a schedule as he can muster, I’m confident that JD can guide us as best he can in our conference.

How rude of boise to use the WAC to further themselves and screw the members who invited them in. 👿 Let’s finish strong this season by giving Boise the A$$ whuppin’ they deserve, and send them on there way.

I too share in the belief with my bradduh AJoe regarding “anybody, anyplace.”

However, I do find the all of these moves to be pretty interesting. I think the best case scenario for the WAC will entail the Big 12 raiding the MWC’s big boys…..including the likes of BYU, TCU, and Boise. This would leave the bottom feeders of the MWC scrambling to survive. This could be good for the remaining WAC. With that, I’d love to re-connect with Colorado State, UNLV, Air Force, and Wyoming.

    BIK

To make UH atractive to other conferences, someone somewhere must take the ball and talk to airline, hotel, tourism, and anyone in between to develop a plan for flights from the West Coast to Hawaii and back.

Even with reduced rates, this will benefit the entire State from taxes to hotel occupany and airline seats to bus tansportation (round trip from airport to hotel and hotel to Aloha Stadium and hotel), restaurants, gift shops, etc.

If I approach the airlines, hotels, bus companies, DEBT, their first remark is “who the hell are you?” My response, “I have a plan you may be interested in that will help your business and the UHAD simultaneously”.

And if this should come to pass, publicize via TV, radio, newspaper, etc. who the participating business are!

  154. A-House June 13, 2010 4:18 pm

Again, the fans must accept an earlier starting time on Saturday so UH can get airtime on the mainland and reduce the visiting teams expenses by a return trip after the game.

And, high school football being more important that UH mentality has to change. I liken this to the “paternalistic” attitude from plantation days. Wonder how much of a factor this mentality plays with student athletes being more loyal to their high school rather than college attended? Honolulu is a “high school town”.

Take Michelle Wie, for example, all media reports link her to be a Punahou alum; here and on the mainland.

  155. Pomai June 13, 2010 4:23 pm

  158. madink June 13, 2010 4:41 pm

    To A-House, right as rain.

California has a lot of big-time high school football, but it’s the colleges that rule the roost. Ohio has Cleveland Glenvele, Massillon, Canton McKinley, etc… but it’s Ohio State that rules. Why can’t it be that way in the Isles?
I agree that the Warriors have hardly any national visibility. And that hurts being able to recruit the best players. You’ll get that 1000-yd rb if he knows a lot of people will be able to watch him play his college ball.

UH doesn’t have a lot of time to turn it around. It can be a Warrior town or a ‘high school town’; I agree.

What’s your opinion on whether the UH and the local politicos have the guts to pull it off?

  164. Garret June 13, 2010 7:51 pm

Playing the games early on Friday has two major problems:

    1. If you want the game on at a decent time for people on the mainland to watch, you’d have to start the game at 5pm or earlier Hawaii time. How many people would be able to get off of work early to get to the game? How bad would the traffic be on a Friday during rush hour with everybody trying to get to Aloha Stadium?

    2. If you want recruits on the mainland to watch the game, playing on Friday night while they are playing their games probably isn’t the best time.

People are saying that Hawaii high schools should play on Saturday and have UH play on Friday. But recruits on the mainland play their games on Friday.

  165. Garret June 13, 2010 7:53 pm

The Big 12 Commissioner really is trying hard to keep the conference together!

The same source said that a new television contract being touted by Commissioner Dan Beebe could produce “significantly more” than $17 million for each of the remaining 10 Big 12 schools. Perhaps upwards of $20 million per school.

And, that a departure penalty of around $20 million withheld from Colorado and Nebraska would mean $2 million each to the remaining Big 12 members.

  166. Garret June 13, 2010 7:54 pm

The Pac-10 Commissioner flew to Kansas today…they are tracking where the plane he is using is going.

The airplane used by Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott to tour Big 12 expansion targets was expected to be in Kansas City on Sunday.

The Eugene Register-Guard confirmed that Scott is using the airline of former Oregon athletic director Pat Kilkenny, and according to flightaware.com, the flight was scheduled to land in Kansas City around 10 p.m.

Kansas has been speculated at a Pac-10 target.

Texas politicians are getting involved in realignment.

Branch said the chief executives of Texas (Bill Powers), Texas A&M (R. Bowen Loftin) and Texas Tech (Guy Bailey) already have accepted their invitations to testify before the committee. Branch also hopes to have representatives from Baylor, Rice, Southern Methodist, TCU, Houston, North Texas and UTEP. Branch also has invited several economists as well as the commissioners of the Pac-10, SEC, Big 12, Mountain West and Conference USA.

“I think we’ll have some of [the commissioners],” Branch said. “We may have all of them. I’m starting to hear that some of these people realize it will be in their best interests to be there.”

Of particular interest are potential moves by Texas and Texas Tech to the Pac-10 and by Texas A&M to either the SEC or Pac-10. Legislators also will want to know how those potential moves might affect other schools in the state.

unfortunately, I do not believe that the certain individuals in power, except for Hinshaw and Donovan, have the necessary support to pull it off.

Pres MC Green has said nothing, in public, but hopefully she has made her thoughts known to Hinshaw and Donovan and hope its, “do your very best to keep UH athletics around, especially football”.

The Gov is lame duck so we need to see who will be the next Gov – neither Mufi or Neil has made any public statements on their support of UH.

Tho’ the paper has shed some light on this subject, it is not strong enough to initiate action by the “bigs”.

Benson and the WAC are so out of the loop; sad to see people in leadership position be so “laid back” and waiting for the bowling ball to drop. Of course, we know that this will be too late!!!

    Garret:

I fully support an early start time, but it’s for SATURDAY afternoon. Like I posted earlier, we, the fans, will have to make the necessary adjustments to attend an earlier start time.

Some fans will miss the start time, but if I remember correctly, Jim D said that the majority of fans can make the earlier time. UH sacrifice will be the current ticket holders who have to work and will cancel their tickets. Mid to long range, hopefully these individuals can attend the earlier UH football games on Saturday.

  172. Garret June 13, 2010 8:47 pm

    A-House,

I thought some people here were saying that UH should play on Fridays. That is what I was responding to.

I like earlier start times on Saturdays and have mentioned that several times over the years, especially since UH games have been on after midnight Eastern time sometimes–so, USA Today and other scoreboards would show UH as a *Sunday* game and not include UH’s score with the rest of Saturday’s scores. That always bothered me.

UH did conduct a study and they said that they found that attendance would be projected to go down if they moved the start times up. Maybe that is a result of Hawaii being a service economy or being reliant on tourism–lots of people work on Saturdays.

  173. Garret June 13, 2010 8:51 pm

A conference commissioner says that the Big 12 should keep the conference going even if they lose 7 of their 12 teams.

If there’s an exodus of five more Big 12 schools, the five remaining would be wise to remain together, according to a conference commissioner with experience dealing with expansion.

The reason is simple: The five remaining schools — Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Baylor and Iowa State — would be due a huge payday and ultimately could salvage automatic berths to the NCAA tournament and possibly the BCS through expansion themselves.

The commissioner, who didn’t want to be identified because he’s involved in the ongoing realignment of college athletics, said it would be critical for the leftover schools to maintain the Big 12 as an entity or corporation.

“The assets, the amount of money that they would be due by exit fees back to the corporation would be huge,’’ said the commissioner. “Rather than dissolve the Big 12, they are better off as a Big 12 entity then moving to the Mountain West.’’

  174. Garret June 13, 2010 8:53 pm

If the Pac-10 doesn’t get Texas, they would be a big loser in conference expansion. It is interesting that a 10-team Big 12 would get a bigger TV contract than a 12-team Pac-10.

According to industry and network sources, that 10-team league would have more television value then a Pac-11 or Pac-12 (with Utah as the 12th).

Regardless, the commissioner said the most likely remaining Big 12 schools could be due millions from each departing member, depending on how the legal side of each school works out the exit fees. The fee percentages change if the school gives a two-year notice or a one-year notice. Nebraska and Colorado are expected to join their new conferences for the fall of 2011.

Meanwhile, the commissioner said that new Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott is taking a gamble if he doesn’t come back with Texas in an expansion model. If Scott is rebuffed by the Longhorns and thus by the rest of the Big 12 South schools and is forced to then just take Utah for the 12th member, it would be a major disappointment.

Industry sources say that a Pac-12 that just adds Colorado and Utah doesn’t increase the value that much for the league in a traditional model of seeking a new television deal. The best-case scenario for the Pac-10 is to come home with Texas, a Pac-16 and a new television network that would rival the Big Ten Network.

  175. Garret June 13, 2010 8:55 pm

All 31 conference commissioners (all NCAA levels) will be together starting tomorrow night. With the Pac-10, Big 12, SEC, and Big 10 fighting over some of the same teams and trying to steal each other’s teams, those meetings could have some awkward moments.

By the way, all 31 conference commissioners — including Scott, the Big Ten’s Jim Delany and the Big 12’s Dan Beebe — are scheduled to be in Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Monday night for the start of the Collegiate Commissioners Association’s annual meetings. The three-day meetings are sure to be interesting if the conference expansion moves are made mid-week in the middle of the meetings.

I’m really hoping that Coach Mack has the team ready to kick butt. Lane Kiffin is looking to make a statement on national television, gain credibility & give reassurances to their fans that everything will be just fine despite the adversity. He has to be careful what he wishes for; that can be a double-edged sword. With one fell-swoop, this team can gain credibility with even the most critical of fans, regain national respect & wash the sour taste of the Sugar Bowl out of our mouths. An impressive season by Coach Mack, Coach Gib and their respective teams will bring UH back into the discussion more than anything else.

    SPORTS-RELATED TOPIC

(from: thegardenisle.com, written by Dennis Fujimoto)

Jessica Iwata reflects on a ‘phenom’ Hawai‘i season
HANAPEPE — Jessica Iwata had a dream even before setting foot on the diamond. She wanted to play baseball.

Joycelyn “Jolly” Iwata, Jessica’s mom, said while preparing for Jessica’s graduation party in 2009 after Jessica’s graduation from Kaua‘i High School, they found a video of Jessica during her preschool graduation.

“Everybody was saying they wanted to be a policeman or a fireman, but Jessica got up and said, ‘I want to be a baseball player,’” Joycelyn said. “But she didn’t even start playing until she was 5 years old.”

Jessica is coming off a successful first year at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, where she plays shortstop, the same position she anchored during her tenure with the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders.

Unfortunately, the ride ended prematurely when Arizona’s 5-1 win took the Rainbow Wahine out of the Women’s College World Series, the first time the Hawai‘i women reached that event.

That meant Jessica came home with the team, but her parents, Jason and Joycelyn, remained in Oklahoma City until Thursday night.

“I’m still dizzy from all that,” Jason said. “But mom said if they get past the Super Regionals, we’re booking the flight. We booked for the duration.”

Joycelyn said they attended the Western Athletic Conference and the Stanford Regionals, but missed Alabama.

“It was exciting,” Jason said. “Everywhere we walked, everyone was rooting for UH. They had fans coming out from everywhere.”

Jessica was in the midst of all that, earning the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week honor on April 13, the first Hawai‘i player to earn that accolade. During the week leading to that selection, Jessica went 12-for-20 with nine runs, 17 RBIs, two doubles, six home runs, two grand slams and two walks, finishing the week with a 1.600 slugging percentage, a .636 on-base percentage and a .600 batting average.

Heading into the game against Missouri, Iwata was third on the Hawai‘i squad with a .379 batting average with 18 home runs recorded.

This was the number on June 2 as reported by “RockMNation,” and from a girl whom mom said didn’t like softball.

“She was in and out of softball starting in middle school, and was a starter all four years at Kaua‘i High School,” Joycelyn said.

During her senior year, Jessica admits there were some issues because of her involvement with track and not being able to make all of the softball practices. But those were resolved and she finished the 2009 season with a .633 batting average with 23 runs scored, eight home runs and 24 RBI.

She went on to lead the Kaua‘i team to the 2009 state Division II title after hitting .571 with eight RBI.

During the UH team’s 28-day road trip that ended at the WCWS, Jessica said she got to see facilities that were much nicer than those at Rainbow Stadium in Manoa.

“It’s much nicer,” Jessica, who saw her first snow, said. “But you don’t need fancy facilities to play good softball.”

Heading into the 2010-2011 season, Jessica is optimistic about the prospects for the Rainbow Wahine, despite the team losing five graduates.

“The whole right side graduated — the catcher, first base, second base and right field,” Jessica said. “That was also our No. 6 through 9 batting lineup.”

But Jessica said the coach has already signed a left-handed catcher and three middle-infielders.

Losing a catcher sparks a light for another Kaua‘i player, Jocelyn Enrique, a Kapa‘a High School graduate, on the team.

“Jocelyn was our No. 3 catcher, and we graduated two catchers,” Jessica said. “But we have a good left-handed catcher coming in, so it might be all up for grabs, again.”

Jory Jasper, graduating with Jessica from Kaua‘i High School, red-shirted this year and will be vying for a spot in the coming year.

“Our defense should be fine,” Jessica said. “Our freshmen need to step up and we should be OK.”

Jessica said everyone comes in knowing how to play.

“I had a hard time at first because we were playing everywhere, but once the team lineup was set, things became more comfortable and we just played together,” Jessica said.

Jessica said she wants to keep playing even after she finishes school.

“Right now, I’m taking liberals for psychology and kinesiology, but I guess I’m going to have to declare one (major) next year,” she said. “After that, if I make the USA team, maybe I’ll play with them.

“Or, some of the girls say I can go to Italy — they pay you to play there. But, we’ll see where everything ends up.”

Karl Tashima, one of the coaches who was working with Jessica, Friday, said she’s on the high road now.

(The discussion of finacial and business dealings related to what used to be known only as college athletics may continue…)

“Sportsbow” presents us with this intersting post on a WAC message board:

The Big Ten/Pac-10, UT attack on A&M and why (very long). Reply

I am a Florida alum and Gator fan who?s become very interested in the realignment of college football which has begun to take shape. Have tried to follow events as closely as possible. As last week progressed I began to see some things nobody has talked about but lead me to some conclusions which startle me, especially considering that I am not by nature a conspiracy nut.

I believe that the Big Ten and Pac-10 conferences have jointly planned a major upheaval in college athletics, primarily over football and are working very closely together in order to bring it about. Although uncertain, I believe that it?s likely being done with the active complicity of the University of Texas. The goals are simple: both the Big Ten and Pac-10 seek to significantly enlarge their power and influence over college athletics and do so in a way that isolates the Southeastern Conference, in recent years the best athletic conference in the America. The Big Ten/Pac-10 have, in my view, consciously decided and have engaged in a course of conduct to destroy the Big 12 Conference, largely because it?s in the way. Thus far only there is only one thing which has prevented this plan from being successfully executed.

    Texas A&M University.

A&M?s current indecision over whether to join UT in the Pac-10 or join the SEC, assuming the Big 12 can?t be saved, has forced both conferences to make changes in the original plan. There?s tremendous pressure being put on A&M to join the Pac-10 because the entire Big Ten/Pac-10 plan will fail to achieve its full goal if it doesn?t join the Pac-10: increased power to both conferences while at the same time isolating and minimizing the SEC.

When the Big 10 first announced expansion plans months ago interest focused on Notre Dame which rather quickly stated its desire to remain a football independent. Beyond that the initial media coverage focused on one (1) Big 12 school, the University of Missouri and several schools in the Big East. The interest in the latter was, ostensibly, to gain the Big Ten access to the New York City TV market. It all made sense. It was all a farce. The Big 12 school targeted by the Big Ten was Nebraska. The Pac 10 was also initiating expansion plans, though far more quietly. Its goal: expand to sixteen (16) teams all from the Big 12. The goal of both conferences was to destroy the Big 12 and gain power as a result. They are very close to succeeding.

As things moved on there was almost simultaneous disclosure of the Big Ten?s interest in Nebraska and the Pac-10?s interest in Colorado, schools in Texas and Oklahoma. During Big 12?s recent administrative meetings two significant (2) things occurred: First, the ?rest? of the Big 12 imposed a deadline on Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska by which time each was required to state whether it intended to remain a Big 12 member (the deadline was originally thought to be Friday, June 11th, though some suggested it could be as late as Tuesday, June 15th; Second, word started spreading that while the Big 12 could survive the loss of Colorado or Missouri or both, it could not survive if Nebraska decided to go elsewhere.

Both the deadline and the ?we must keep Nebraska or we die? ideas were lead by one (1) school: Texas.

    1. Why Nebraska? Yes, it has a rich tradition, especially in football, but if the Big 12 could survive Colorado or Missouri or both, why couldn?t it survive if just Nebraska left? ANSWER: Because it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you?re going to publicly destroy something like the Big 12, it helps if you can justify it in advance. It also helps to create the illusion that Texas wanted to keep the Big 12 alive.

When Nebraska?s Chancellor addressed the university?s Board of Regents meeting on Friday, June 11th, he related a discussion he?d had at the Big 12 meeting in which he essentially asked three (3) questions: What happens if Missouri leaves? Big 12 schools thought the conference would survive. What happens if Colorado leaves? The Big 12 survives. What happens if Nebraska leaves? Oh, that?s different, if Nebraska leaves the Big 12 collapses.

At the same Board of Regents meeting Athletic Director (and former football coach) Tom Osborne stated that when Nebraska officials grilled other Big 12 schools some admitted (I?d be shocked if Texas wasn?t one of them) talking to as many as three (3) other conferences while Nebraska had only talked to one (1), the Big Ten. As a result Nebraska officials thought they had no choice but to find a new place to land. That is exactly what one (1) of those schools wanted Nebraska to think, so the Huskers? leaving the Big 12 would cover the tracks of other schools when they deserted the Big 12. That school is Texas. If you?re going to destroy something in which you belong, it helps if you can blame someone else.

    2. When Texas and Texas A&M officials met on Monday, June 8th, to discuss saving the Big 12, was that the real goal of the meeting? ANSWER: No, the real goal, at least from UT?s view, was to convince Texas A&M to join UT, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado in the new mega-conference Pac-10. Problems arose because A&M officials weren?t sold on the idea and wanted to look at other options.

Texas (the Big Ten & Pac-10) assumed that A&M officials could be cajoled into following UT?s lead because in many matters A&M has done so in the past. Of course by now the cat is out of the bag on the Pac-10?s plans with other Big 12 schools. Baylor University is going to be left out (because the Pac 10 doesn?t want Baylor) and efforts begin in Austin to see if Baylor can be substituted for Colorado in the new Pac-10 mega-conference.

    3. Why does it matter to UT if Texas A&M joins the Pac-10? There?s the historical relationship of the two schools, as institutions of higher learning in Texas and the athletic rivalry. However, neither has anything to do with it. ANSWER: Texas needs to get Texas A&M on board to prevent the SEC from gaining any foothold in Texas. The Big Ten/Pac-10 plan calls for the Big Ten to extend is domination from the Midwest into major TV markets of the East while the Pac-10 becomes the preeminent conference west of the Mississippi River. To accomplish that, the Pac-10 must add the entire state of Texas to prevent the SEC from expanding its territory and its influence.

Saving Baylor University actually played into the Big Ten/Pac-10 cover story which became even more important when Texas A&M insisted on looking at alternatives to Pac-10 membership.

    4. Why was Colorado, surprisingly invited to the Pac-10 earlier than expected and prior to Nebraska? Why was Colorado taken out of turn? ANSWER: To put pressure on Texas A&M. Although never conceded as such, almost everybody in the media and elsewhere assumed the Pac-10?s invitation to Colorado last Thursday was to stop any pro-Baylor efforts in Texas, AND any pressure on UT to make a Pac-10 invitation to Baylor a condition of its willingness to go to the Pac-10. It was the perfect cover story.

The Pac-10 doesn?t want Baylor and never has, but adding Colorado just prior to the Big Ten-Nebraska engagement did two things: First, if anybody tried to blame either the Big Ten or the Pac-10, each can claim that initially they took only one (1) Big 12 team; Second, when Nebraska did leave the following day, Texas can say that, despite its best efforts, the Big 12?s days are over and that Texas A&M better get on board with its fellow flagship university partner and join the Pac-10. Why? To stop the SEC from entering Texas by adding a major school from Texas to its conference lineup. The Pac-10 and Big Ten don?t want the SEC in Texas. One of their common goals is to reduce the SEC?s power by denying it expansion that helps the SEC grow.

    5. Why, after wooing Missouri for months, did the Big Ten?s Commissioner tell his Big 12 counterpart after confirming Nebraska?s invitation to join his conference that the Big Ten didn?t anticipate adding any other Big 12 schools to his conference? ANSWER: Because Texas A&M?s interest in options beside the Pac-10 has created instability the Big Ten/Pac-10 can?t control. Adding to that instability only creates more chances that it gets worse. And, remember, because of Texas A&M, things aren?t going according to the original plan.

Nebraska?s exit from the Big 12 confirms UT?s self-fulfilling prophecy that the Big 12 is dead. It?s not that the Big Ten isn?t still interested in Missouri. However, because of Texas A&M?s position, it now makes more sense for the Big Ten & Pac 10 to split any responsibility for the Big 12?s demise; allow Texas to lead Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 under the ruse that the Big 12 is no longer viable; then when the Big 12 collapses the Big Ten can still invite Missouri which, technically won?t be a Big 12 school because the Big 12 is either already gone or officially on the road to self-extinction.

    6. Why has ABC-TV been so quiet in all of this? The network has television rights to the Big 12 and stands to lose a lot, correct? ANSWER: Wrong, it does not because it?s also the primary TV partner of both the Pac-10 and Big Ten. If this goes according to plan, money that would have gone to the Big 12 for distribution will now mostly go to the Pac-10 with some to the Big Ten. Chances are ABC (and its subsidiary, ESPN) will lose little or nothing in this massive upheaval. Instead ABC will just be shuffling off roughly the same amount of money into different conferences. There is also a major gain for ABC in that it?s prior relationships with both the Big Ten and Pac-10 are more significant because both conferences become far more powerful.

ESPN puts major investigative reporters on Barry Bonds and other significant sports issues. College football is undergoing the most massive change in its history and ESPN is doing nothing but covering the basics of who?s going where. Why? Because any serious outside investigation of the realignment of college athletics might expose the possibility that ESPN?s parent company, ABC, is involved in this plan. The Big Ten/Pac-10 want to beat back the SEC. ABC wants to beat back CBS which is the SEC?s television partner.

    7. Why has the Pac-10 imposed a 72-hour deadline on Texas A&M while its commissioner personally hands out invitations this weekend to Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State? ANSWER: Because time is of the essence regarding the overall plan, but especially the Big Ten?s portion of the plan.

In order for the Big Ten to pressure Notre Dame into accepting a Big Ten invitation, the conference must destabilize ND?s comfort zone. To do that it must seek new members from the Big East conference which houses most of Notre Dame?s non-football athletic teams. Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Rutgers are the schools most often mentioned by the media. However, if that happens, the Big East becomes unstable and, likely seeks some sort of merger with the Atlantic Coast Conference. Two (2) Texas newspapers, citing SEC sources, indicated that the SEC?s dream expansion scenario involves Texas, Texas A&M, North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke. Media reports confirm that the SEC has talked with UNC and that it didn?t say ?no.? Neither has it said yes.

    8. Why is the SEC?s dream scenario important in all this? ANSWER: Because a major goal of the Big Ten/Pac-10 plan is to prevent any significant SEC expansion into any non-SEC states.

Because of Texas A&M?s unwillingness to blindly follow UT?s lead in the western portion of the Big Ten/Pac-10 plan, everything has bogged down. That must be controlled in a way that forces A&M to follow UT into the Pac-10. If not, the SEC makes inroads into Texas and Texas TV markets. Destabilizing the Big East by the Big Ten could lead ACC schools to do what Nebraska did and seek other options. If SEC adds Texas A&M as a conference school, that is bad for both the Big Ten and Pac-10. However, if the SEC adds A&M, North Carolina and Duke (a 4th school would need to be added as well), a major goal of the plan is a total failure. Adding those three (3) schools to the SEC not only makes it the best football conference in the U.S., but also the best men?s basketball conference. Further, Notre Dame probably correctly reads the long term consequences of such events and, again, decides to stay an independent, thus ruining another basic goal of the Big Ten portion of the plan. There are six (6) major college athletic conferences in the United States: the Big East, Atlantic Coast, Southeastern, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-10. The plan by the Big Ten/Pac-10 calls for one (1) of those conferences (Big 12) to be destroyed, two (2) others (Big East and ACC) to be destabilized towards a merger, and one (1) more (SEC) to be isolated so it can?t adequately respond to the two (2) new power conferences in America (the Big Ten and Pac-10). Hell, it?s almost like the old days when the Rose Bowl was the premier New Year?s Day game and was controlled by the same two (2) conferences.

    9. Is there any more pressure that can be put on Texas A&M to join the Pac-10? ANSWER: Yes and it?s already happening. Without saying so publically (who knows what?s been said behind the scenes directly to Texas A&M), Texas is threatening to end its rivalry with the Aggies. Major newspapers in both Dallas and Houston, Sunday, are reporting that and other consequences if A&M doesn?t play ball. One paper suggests other Texas schools will blackball A&M if it doesn?t join the Pac-10. In other words play ball with us or pay.

Once again, Texas is setting up another self-fulfilling prophecy. 1: If Nebraska goes to the Big Ten, the Big 12 is dead and its Nebraska?s fault. 2: We did everything we could to save the Big 12, but now that it?s gone, we have no choice but to join the Pac-10. 3: We really want to maintain our rivalry with Texas A&M. However, if the Aggies don?t follow us to the Pac-10, the rivalry is no longer viable and it?s Texas A&M?s fault.

    10. What?s going to happen next? ANSWER: I don?t know unless Texas A&M bows to UT?s pressure. If that happens, the second phase of the plan will begin to destabilize the Big East in order to force Notre Dame to join the Big Ten. At that point every other conference in America will be directly threatened by the Big Ten/Pac-10 reconfiguration of college athletics.

My purpose here isn?t to influence any Texas A&M decision. To me A&M going to the Pac-10 makes little sense and -at best- is the worst of three (3) options. The other two are joining the SEC or making a real effort to save the Big 12 in a reconfigured form by attacking and exposing UT?s apparent complicity in the Big Ten/Pac-10 plan.

In conclusion, let me reiterate that I?m not a conspiracy freak. However, in this instance too many things have happened too quickly not to believe they are being orchestrated by someone or some group of people. I know the Big 12?s money distribution system of revenues was flawed. It contributed both to internal conference strife and to its apparent demise. However, the Big 12 could be salvaged and re-configured if people so wanted. I believe Texas A&M sincerely has tried to do so. I also believe the University of Texas has been complicit in the Big 12?s destruction in order to advance its own interests and that of two (2) athletic conferences. One of those goals is the continued subjugation of Texas A&M.

Texas A&M must find the best long term answer to the situation it now faces. It should understand fully the circumstances in which it finds itself and how they came about. I sincerely wish A&M the best because whatever decision A&M makes will likely change for decades the makeup of college athletics. It ought to know why it is presently under siege and who is responsible for doing so. And it should realize that by simply doing what is every American?s right ? the right to question and seek alternatives, Texas A&M finds itself in its current position at the very center of the future of college athletics and under the watchful, threatening eyes of others who care nothing about the university, but only what it can do for them.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS, MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE “SPORT” ASPECT OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR.

On the Airlines side UH should Look into Leasing a Plane doing the Football Season that can carry 160 Athletes. UH will have full control of the Seats on the Flight. The remaining seats if available can be sold to the Booster Club
Members. Here is another way you can cover cost if plane has to come to from San diego empty to pick up the team in Hawaii you can sell the seat on the San diego to Hawaii flight at a discount to anyone. When we playing at home. UH Can also Offer for a fee the Plane to the Opposing Teams.

    Kekoa,

It was HARD to find real and actual sports news lately, especially anything pure and ONLY about the student athlete and their pursuit to better themselves as people on and off the field.

I personally find it fitting that the UH spring sports season, the sports that do not generate as much revenue as football or men’s basketball, have thrived over their fall season counterparts, with the exception of Wahine volleyball.

When I mean “fitting” I do NOT mean I take “pleasure” in seeing other UH sports struggle while others thrive, I mean “fitting” as in the timing of such events around the nation at this current time.

What are the real lasting images we all possess of UH athletics in the year 2010?

The Rainbow Wahine softball team making waves on a national stage. In almost a defiant act of success, this program, a non-revenue program raised their bats as a figurative “middle finger” to the money-grabbing thieves of college athletics. With the swing of the bat, the Wahine said “look at us, were girls, we can win and we can win big and if you don’t care then we don’t care about you, we’ll keep winning”.

With one leap, Amber Kaufman jumped her way to national glory as if to inspire others to jump over adversity and politics in college athletics.

With one deadly spike, Jonas Umlauft showed that even the biggest challeges can be silenced with self dedication and confidence in your craft as opposed to relying on the heavy wallets of bankers and politicans to fight your battles on the field.

The Rainbow baseball team, with a timely home run told us that it’s not over until it’s over.

I love all these guys and gals. They still show us that the glitter and glitz of college football (on a national perspective) and it’s tyranny over ALL college athletics doesn’t mean much on the field of competition. The field of competition is where REAL men and REAL women win battles, only greed and selfishness are hashed out in conference rooms, airport hotels, and teleconferences.

As we approach the 2010 fall sports season, the pressure is on for OUR football and men’s basketball teams to produce. They shouldn’t have to look far for inspiration. Their inspiration is on campus, in the same classrooms, and in the same weightroom.

BLOOD ALONE MOVES THE WHEELS OF HISTORY! Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation – which everyone finds during the day – how long we have been striving for greatness?

Not only the years we’ve been at war – the war of work – but from the moment as a child, when we realize the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle, a never-ending fight, I SAY TO YOU AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS A PRIVELEGE TO FIGHT!!!!

    WE ARE WARRIORS!!!

WARRIORS AND THE RAINBOW WAHINE OF HAWAII NEI, I IMPLORE OF ALL OF YOU ONCE MORE TO STAND AND BE WORTH OF THIS HISTORICAL AND DIRE HOUR!!!

No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself!!!

Some people will tell you “HAWAII” is not the “ideal” location. They’ll conjure up images of grass skirts and long plane rides. This is our duty to change their perception. I say, Warriors – and Wahine – of Manoa… UNITE!

WE MUST NEVER ACQUIESCE, FOR IT IS TOGETHER… TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL!!!

WE MUST NEVER CEDE CONTROL OF THE HOMELAND!!!

FOR IT IS TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL!

New NCAA rule for appeals will make it hard for USC to reduce any of its penalties.

Frustrated with penalties being reduced upon appeal in a series of high-profile cases, the NCAA infractions committee in January 2008 sponsored an appeals rule change, then maneuvered its approval by the NCAA board of directors with a procedural move that did not require a vote by NCAA member schools.

Under the 2008 rule, the appeals committee can only rule penalties excessive if it finds the infractions committee demonstrated an abuse of discretion.

  192. Garret June 14, 2010 3:32 am

Nice conspiracy theory above. However, there are many things factually wrong in that theory. For example, the idea that ABC and EPSN are keeping silent about this because they are the main TV partners for both the Pac-10 and Big 10 ignores how FOX has the Big 10 TV Network (FOX owns 49%, the Big 10 owns 51$) and FOX is the one setting up the Pac-16 TV Network. So, FOX would be the biggest winner if the Pac-16 is established, not ABC/ESPN.

  193. Garret June 14, 2010 3:57 am

It looks like Texas has committed to staying in the Big 12. That ends the Pac-10’s attempt to go to 16 teams and they will probably add either Utah or Kansas to get to 12 teams instead.

It looks like the Big 12 Commissioner’s ability to pull TV numbers that *exceed* the SEC’s TV numbers might prevent realignment was going crazy. If Texas A&M doesn’t bolt for the SEC, the SEC won’t expand, the Big 10 will stay at 12 teams, the Pac-10 will stop at 12 teams, and this round of conference realignment will end with only Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and BSU moving to different conferences.

In a bombshell development that could bring a halt to seismic changes in college realignment, sources tell Orangebloods.com Texas has been convinced by a plan presented by commissioner Dan Beebe to stay in a 10-member Big 12.

UT officials are expected to announce their decision to remain in the Big 12 as early as Monday.

if the Big 12 survives as 10, i see some cards possibly lining up. like tcu, byu or utah being invited to join the big 12. tcu has a lot of history with the rest of the texas schools, so there is a possibility they may be invited first, then one or the other, but not both.

  197. Garret June 14, 2010 6:41 am

It looks like the Pac-10 Commissioner canceled his trip to Kansas. That means that either Utah will be their 12th school and they will stop at 12 (good for UH and the WAC) or Utah beat out Kansas for the 16th spot (good for UH).

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott filed a flight plan that would have put him in Kansas City on Sunday night, apparently to talk conference expansion with Kansas.

But the private plane that carried Scott and deputy commissioner Kevin Weiberg to Oklahoma and Texas on Saturday and Sunday did not make its scheduled 9:48 p.m. CDT arrival at Kansas City International Airport.

According to its flight plan, it was supposed to fly in from Austin, Texas.

An official at the airport said apparently the flight had been changed or canceled.

Ferd’s column was absolutely spot on this morning. No leadership.

I’ve suggested leasing or purchasing a plane to help with the transportation issue. Went down in flames.

Did someone do the books to see about the cost benefit to join the Pac 10 with concessions? In other words, UH may not and would not be on the same financial footing as the others since UH would have to subsidize all traveling to the islands by visiting teams (lease a plane). But would the revenue generated by TV contracts, BCS membership, tec. offset the expense sufficiently to cover that lease agreement, eak out a meager profit but beyond all, keep UH in D-1?

In the mean time, with State leadership, go ba___ to the wall and solidify a relationship with Japan (football, baseball, v-ball), Korea (basketball, baseball, volleyball, golf) and China (baseball, basketball, soccer, etc)? Create a television package to offset cost for travel, build relationship with governments (they subsidize travel) to make UH the “Gateway to Asia” in athletics.

Yes it’s a dream, but the same old way just does not seem to be working and waiting for bad news is not being strategic. Something UH has not been in a long, long time.

I appreciate a person who willing to come up with solutions regardless if they are feasible or not. However, leasing or purchasing a plane might be out of UH’s budget. However, Hawaii Airlines, should they turn out huge profits in the future, might be inclined to discuss a subsidized fare package with the school’s athletic department in exchange for advertisement cost at UH games. Just a little way of showing the Ohana spirit.

Whats funny is I always envisioned Hawaiian Airlines with a Wariors or Rainbow themed plane on their newly acquired Airbus 330, like Horizon Airlines contribution to Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, and Boise State with their themed planes to show pride. Might be a stretch, but one can’t deny a man’s dream. 🙂

Clarification to the person that asked about mainland coverage of football games. I believe there was only one UH football game televised in LA. A couple of years ago there were two. Of course the Boise State game that was televised had Boise State announcers. All ESPN games are pro other team, no matter what sport. The games are really too late, because they don’t end till after 1:00 sometimes. Imagine back east. No one wants to watch a game till 4:00 in the morning. UH games should really start at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon, like many of the games here. There use to be FOX coverage years ago, but there are none now.
As for game against USC, I wouldn’t count on Mike Garrett doing anything because he believes there are only two kinds of people: Trojans and those that want to be Trojans. So to many of us we’e nothing. He’s not arrogant, just stupid, like many people from there.
