    Great wedding.
    Jim Leahey was the M.C.
    Had a fun time.
Unfortunately, the iPhoto on my laptop doesn’t work, so I can’t post any pictures until I get to the office.

    Faye W:

Any chance related to the “Wai Boys” who went to UCLA in the late 30s?

Wai Boys = Francis, Conkling, Lambert and Robert.

Great, heart warming story by Lee Cataluna, who by the way hails from Koloa, Kauai – well at least her father – believe he was Kauai High class of 1956.

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2010 8:40 am

Here’s the link to view the Wahine game at 10AM. Go to list of events on the left hand side and at the bottom of the list, click to the second page of events. You’ll see the Hawaii and Tecxas Tech logos, click there.

While the publishing part of the Advertiser will close at 00:01 am on 6/7/2010, will the Advertiser’s internet site still be operational so we can log on to this blog?

  25. LizKauai (iPad) May 23, 2010 8:46 am

#23. That is the $64K question.

  28. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2010 8:49 am

    A-house –

That’s the $64million question these days.

I wonder if Stephen even knows.

  29. NorthShoreFan May 23, 2010 8:50 am

GT..using the Easton “Synergy” bats …

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2010 8:51 am

    LOL @ Liz!

Look at that, two great minds with the same thought. I adjusted my reply for inflation of course.

And good morning to you Ms. Lizzy!

  31. LizKauai (iPad) May 23, 2010 8:54 am

So – why should we be surprised that mainstream announcers and writers are unaware of or dissing the Wahine records and accomplishments? Colt and our perfect season guys got the same treatment.

Reminds me of shopping: “Free shipping anywhere in the US.”
    Oh yeah- except for Hawaii.

  32. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2010 8:54 am

    A-House.
Good question. I’m pretty sure The Advertiser online will go through Sunday, June 6.
    Then it will go dark.
I know the new company bought the online rights, but, as I understand it, it won’t be using the Gannett online system. So, I’m not exactly sure that starting June 7 there will be any archived blog entries available on line.
I suppose I should find these things out tomorrow.
I’ll get back to you on it.

  33. LizKauai (iPad) May 23, 2010 8:55 am

    Fist bump to DPK!

  34. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2010 8:55 am

I do know that Wednesday will be the last Warrior Beat Show featuring Leila Wai.
We haven’t decided if we’ll have Wai-less shows during Advertiser’s final week.

  35. koakane May 23, 2010 8:56 am

Is Na Koa still planning to have the Aiea Intermediate parking available for 2010 and beyond?

Got an invitation yesterday to bid on line for the Koa Anuenue “reserved” stalls witin the stadium.

Need to get the word out ASAP to us “old timer” parkers at Aiea Intermediate.

  38. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2010 9:00 am

They should do that for every team.

  41. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2010 9:06 am

    Stephen –

Is the Princess going to be with the newly formed paper?

She will be missed terribly on the Warrior Beat Show.

If any local TV stations is looking for a sports reporter, Leila would be an awesome fit. She’s a great journalist, knows her stuff and looks like, well, a Princess on camera.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid May 23, 2010 9:10 am

    DPK,

    Get change? 😆

  46. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2010 9:11 am

Just spoke with Scott Morifuji, our Web guru, and this is sort of interesting:
    • The Advertiser will assign someone to work June 6 to post breaking stories, so, yes, you may still post comments that day.
    • As of right now, there are no plans to shut down The Advertiser site. Doubt if there will be any new posts. At the minimum, the site will remain open to direct readers, if they need to be directed.
    • The site might be a ghost town, to which I asked Scott: What happens if somebody tries to post after June 6? There is a possibility a post would be allowed.
Scott M. said things could change if he gets notices in the next couple of weeks. He’ll keep us posted.

  47. Ralph May 23, 2010 9:28 am

  49. Ralph May 23, 2010 9:32 am

Yee grounded out, 1 out, bottom 7th, Ga tech down by 2 with 2 on in scoring position

  53. d1島 May 23, 2010 9:40 am

They IW to “get” to her?

  54. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2010 9:40 am

The WAC needs a Plan B.
What about the University of Denver? Sure, it does not field a football team. But it has a top lacrosse team (hmm, a sport the WAC should consider?).
The WAC might as well get proactive. While waiting for the shakeup in the football landscape, the WAC might as well try to plot a basketball plan.

  55. Kazz ($20.00) May 23, 2010 9:41 am

So if Georgia Tech loses does that mean ESPN can’t tell anymore LIES about who’s the REAL home run hitting machine in the nation?

  56. d1島 May 23, 2010 9:41 am

Talk about a look of disappointment….

    UO pitcher….

  57. d1島 May 23, 2010 9:43 am

    Kazz,

That supposition looks to be in trouble right now…. 🙁

AS SOON AS I STOPPED POSTING WHAT HAPPENED? 4-1.

    ENOUGH SAID.

And as soon as I post this we just got doubled out.

    (Falls back to internet silence)

  151. wafan May 23, 2010 10:53 am

    Darn.

#46- sound like a record-breaking posting day is coming up in a couple weeks. The “last” blog day should be Tsai-ko Day in Cyberspace. All in to test the blogserver’s capacity!

  156. jm2375 May 23, 2010 10:56 am

wafan – it’s Okie City, not Omaha. Omaha is basebaru.

  157. Kazz ($70.00) May 23, 2010 10:56 am

    Wafan,

Where are the Super Regionals being held. There’ll be eight of them next weekend with two teams each playing two out of three. Will the teams go to neutral fields? Will any of the teams be playing at home?

We tried to download Microsoft Silverlight on both of our computers but were unable to do so. That’s why we’re listening to the radio and doing hosuehold chores.

  168. madeinhawaii May 23, 2010 11:11 am

    Wahine looking good.

Great article in today’s advertiser about MBB recruiting and Coach Arnold. Looks very, very promising, but as Coach Gib noted that these players have not played any Division I ball yet so let’s not get too excited right now. However, the new recruits seem to have versatility, shooting ability, rebounding, hops, can run, and handle the ball. That’s a great start. It will then depend on how well and how soon the team will mesh into a real “TEAM” and if these players can share the ball.

You have to ask the question: How much the former coaching staff was spent on recruiting? Because it seems Arnold is recruiting every day. I have always said that in basketball you can turn around a program in one year given the right coach and getting a good recruiting class. It seems Arnold has done that. We still have to find out how well he can coach but we will find that out soon enough. However, I will go on a limb that this year basketball team will be a lot better in the win column than last year and will be a lot more exciting. Things are “looking up.”!

  177. al May 23, 2010 11:26 am

I’m glad that NMSU is honoring the military again this season.

For the second consecutive season, head coach DeWayne Walker and the New Mexico State football team will honor the US military by wearing the crest of the USS New Mexico submarine on the back of their helmets for the 2010 season. In 2009, the Aggies wore the crest of the 2nd Engineer Battalion out of White Sands.

“We are pleased that we have been granted permission to wear the crest of the USS NEW MEXICO on the back of our helmets this year,” Walker said. “We will wear these crests proudly during every game. The crest was important to put on the helmet because it symbolizes many characteristics of the state while honoring the contributions that men and women of the United States Navy are making to our country. The words on the crest “Defendemos Nuestra Tierra” means “defend our home.” This re-emphasizes a common theme that I repeat to our team, that is, that we must defend our home turf at Aggie Memorial Stadium. I am proud to have the crest of the USS New Mexico SSN79 on the New Mexico State helmet in 2010.”

  284. wafan May 23, 2010 12:57 pm

    Liz . . .

  286. Garret May 23, 2010 1:00 pm

Detailed analysis of La Tech, the #104 rated team according to this site.

Tidbit (coaching edition) Tony Franklin. Remember that name? The spread guru — and published author on the subject — most recently was the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State, where his one season in charge of the Blue Raiders offense saw the team land 10 wins and a second-place finish in the Sun Belt. Unfortunately, Franklin is most remembered for the one coaching gig that went awry: his short tenure as the coordinator at Auburn ended abruptly, with Tommy Tuberville relinquishing Franklin of his duties only six games into his first full season. Franklin has been nothing but successful as an assistant outside the B.C.S. conferences, however, and is a good fit at Louisiana Tech, especially under a coach like Dykes.

Louisiana Tech is not untalented; in terms of the talent level of the roster, the Bulldogs are easily ahead of programs like New Mexico State and San Jose State, teams I’ve already previewed on the Countdown, and potentially ahead of WAC brethren Idaho and Utah State. My main concern is in the coaching change in philosophy, which is sizable — especially on offense, obviously. Does Tech have the personnel to run the Air Raid offense at full tilt in 2010? No, not yet. And the defense, though strong at linebacker, does not look up to the task of handling the high-powered offenses in conference play; forget about Boise State and Nevada, what about Hawaii, or those Vandals?

I predict Louisiana Tech to finish in the bottom third of the conference in 2010, ahead of New Mexico State and San Jose State and slightly behind Utah State. The top half of the WAC is strong, and ahead of the Bulldogs in terms of their development.

  287. Kazz ($100.00) May 23, 2010 1:00 pm

    D1 and Koakane,

You guys got it all wrong. The story tonight will NOT be about the Wahine pretty much having an easy time in the Stanford Regional and embarassing TTech and Stanford, BUT it will be about how SAD ESPN is that their darling 🙄 Jenny Yee 🙄 is GONE and that “their” #1 home run hitting team Georgia Tech is eliminated.

  288. 808ike May 23, 2010 1:01 pm

    LizK,

    People nowadays, NO RESPECT!!!!!!

    Article about John Veniri.

Saturday night marked the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for our John Veneri.

Hawaii first met John Veneri on the football field. After graduating from Kamehameha Schools, the thin and lean track star walked onto the University of Hawaii football team where he earned a scholarship as a slot back.

A class act, a team player, a good father and husband and a good friend. “I think the art of TV broadcasting especially sports is gonna lose a real special voice,” said Leahey.

Sorry to hear about the break-in. BIG BACHI on them. BAD KARMA!

The webcast of the Wahine game: they interviewed the pitching coach, not Ricketts. I didn’t continue watching after that, so I don’t know if anyone else was interviewed. My cousin from Maui called during the last pitch of the game…I shouldn’t have answered…tsigh…

The Advertiser has it wrong. The Wahine beat the Red Raiders, not the Aggies. The Aggies are Texas A&M. Hello!

  304. expat May 23, 2010 1:24 pm

I was looking at the super regional bracket and there are some interesting things. First, of the 16 teams 6 are from the PAC-10 (assuming UDub holds its lead on NC) and 4 from the SEC. Also, all 16 teams advanced 3-0 out of their respective regionals — including the three un-seeded teams (again, assuming UDub holds its lead).

  305. Slugger May 23, 2010 1:24 pm

    Kazz-ur #287,

agree with you bout the snub by ESPN network….seems as if the Stanford regional was non-existant., but they’d always mention the regional goings-on involving Washington, etc.
Tried for hours on end to see if they’d mention or show scores involving UH and zippo!!!! What’s with that???

I gotta say, the PAC10 had what?, seven schools participating in the NCAA’s and looks like six(6) will be participating in the super regionals.
Like, WOW!!!, that’s saying something, eh??

And why the heck does UH land-up having to go almost clear across the country to play???..what?, ESPN had a hand in that decision-o-what?
Maybe they don’t like the way UH treats, WAC comissioner, (the loser-Benson).

  307. mctruck May 23, 2010 1:38 pm

Last I surveyed the WAC home page….there’s no mention of the Wahine Softball achievements. Just everything, BSU this, BSU that.
    Thank you, Comish-Benson.

  308. Momona May 23, 2010 1:44 pm

  309. Momona May 23, 2010 1:47 pm

Hopefully the Star-Advertiser will pick-up the writer who penned the Wahine’s win in breaking news – Kelly Grimes and Texas Tech Aggies. They should take the people who made the advertiser #1. LOL

  312. Kazz ($100.00) May 23, 2010 2:08 pm

The NCAA softball bracket is what it is. ESPN controls what they cover and who they cover so my gripe is with them.

If I never see the Wahine play on TV again this season, I can live with that ONLY because not having to hear and see the disrespect of these ESPN people would make it worth it.

How many games have I seen so far since ALL regional play has started???? 0 games and half an inning of the Oregon and Georgia Tech game.

Again, I can live without TV coverage because quite frankly the way we’re perceived is pathetic.

  313. Kazz ($100.00) May 23, 2010 2:11 pm

  324. d1島 May 23, 2010 3:06 pm

Commentator’s key to the matchup is that UH(U) hits lots of HR’s and ‘Bama’s Ace, Kelsi Dunn’s “go to” pitch is the riser. She went on to say that is problematic for Dunn but they can’t change her style and she’ll just have to stick with what got her there and hope she doesn’t give up too many dingers.

  325. koakane May 23, 2010 3:08 pm

good sunday for the UH sball and bball teams. both victorious, congrats and go get um at your various tournys.

btw how will the sports administration divide up to catch the teams?

  326. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2010 3:09 pm

    Kazz:
I knew there might be problems last week when it was announced the Stanford Regional was ranked No. 16. That meant the winner would play the winner of the No. 1-ranked Alabama Regional.
What I like is the Super Regionals are best-of-three series. If anything, UH can go with a two-pitcher rotation, if it wishes.
I think the Rainbow Wahine will be able to hit on the road. I also don’t think the crowd will be much of a factor. The toughest hecklers are students, and Alabama should be out of session, right?

There you go Kazz! We need your MANA!!!

  332. Kazz ($100.00) May 23, 2010 3:32 pm

    ST,

I think you are right that the crowd in Bama will NOT be a factor and as some eluded to that the girls MAY be caught up in the atmosphere and facilities at Bama, but I don’t think they’re gonna be distracted at all.

Heard Bobby Curran say that right after that final out to win the game today, it was a quick group huddle, cheer, and then the farewell handshake line and then to the dugout.

Sound real business-like and they’re focused.

I think the Wahine already proved they can SMASH it on the road. Stanford was 200 down the sides and 220 in the middle and I assume Bama is pretty much the same. No matter, the Wahine are good line drive hitters as well as long ball machines and we can keep it in the park and still win on occasion.

If anything I am concerned about the first game of the series as in all opening games in the WAC tourney and in the Stanford regional they came out “flat” by their own standards. Luckily for us we still won those games, but Bama ain’t no SJSU or UC Davis.

  335. Kazz ($100.00) May 23, 2010 3:38 pm

    D1,

Ralph’s scouting report is that Dunne can be hit. The riser and changeup as you mentioned.

The Wahine will have to be real picky with their pitch selection and hopefully get to her early.

A lot of pitchers and a lot of teams have NOT faced a team with our batting and slugging %s and I thought that Texas Tech would get shaken and they did.

  336. βρεω808 May 23, 2010 3:40 pm

    Link and excerpt re: Alabama

    http://blog.al.com/bamabeat/2010/05/goodbye_to_ncaa_regional_aloha.html

Dunne ended the game with a strikeout, and Alabama’s players stuck around to celebrate afterward with some of the 2,170 in attendance. For Lipscomb (50-13), which beat UAB twice to reach the regional final, today closed the school’s best Division I postseason performance in any sport.

The Lady Bison, however, did one thing this season the Crimson Tide did not. They played Hawaii, losing three road games in March.

“Hawaii does not rely on the short game at all,” said Ryman when asked to compare the teams. “They go up hacking and swinging for the fence. They’re going to get their money’s worth. But realistically, I think their pitching is hittable. Personally, I feel like from a pitching standpoint, Alabama has the edge.”

  341. 808ike May 23, 2010 3:52 pm

    Kazz ($150.00),

Bama has some power as well as pitching.

  342. wafan May 23, 2010 3:53 pm

Hey, now. Did the head Lady Bison call our Wahine a bunch of hacks?

And, if the Wahine pitching is so hittable why did Lipscomb lose three?

    Odd statements.

any updates from the Horiuchi family? prayers being prayed……..

  345. haka May 23, 2010 4:12 pm

I think that the Wahine have shown great composure. They believe in themselves and they understand what is at stake. Their goal is to get to College World Series and they know the task at hand. As with every team from Hawaii, they have to earn respect during the post season.

Playing Alabama will introduce the team to nation and will no doubt, give them the exposure and kudos they deserve. They will be a big underdog, but that has always suited Hawaii teams well. We love to “prove them wrong”.

When you get to this level of play everyone is great. It’s a best of three series and I think the Wahine feel very good about their chances. I feel good about their chances. Play with humility, play hard, put forth your best effort and good things will happen. Throw in a few ti leaves for luck and who knows?

    Go Wahine!

  346. koakane May 23, 2010 4:13 pm

  353. wafan May 23, 2010 4:38 pm

    Nytal!

  354. Garret May 23, 2010 4:46 pm

The Big 10 may go to *20* teams if they get Texas?

The key to the shakeup is whether the Big Ten opts to expand to 16 or become a mega-conference with 20 members. The linch-pin is Texas. If the Big Ten can entice Texas to join, it will expand to 20 and become the biggest power-broker in collegiate athletics.

That will ignite an arms race with such strong leagues as the SEC and Pac-10 looking to expand to keep pace.

The fallout will be more far-reaching than any volcano in Iceland could spew.

  355. Garret May 23, 2010 4:47 pm

The SEC has apparently already met with CBS about expansion–that makes sense, since they will want more money from CBS if they expand…and CBS *will* give them more money if they get teams like Texas.

Jimmy Hyams of WNML-AM 990 reports that, per a source close to CBS, commissioner Mike Slive has met with network officials regarding the SEC’s potential plans for expansion. Reportedly, Slive told the executives that their goal is to match the Big Ten team for team if they move to 16.

In such a case, Hyams reports, Texas, Texas A&M, Florida State and Clemson would be their targets. If the first two could not be had, the two Texas schools would be replaced by Georgia Tech and Miami.

  361. Kazz ($100.00) May 23, 2010 6:19 pm

Mahalo to Brew808 for the pics indeed!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s amazing. They say, “win and the respect will come”.

Well… anyone care to justify WHY ESPNU’s breakdown of the NCAA Super Regionals FAILED to mention ANYTHING about the home run record breaking Rainbow Wahine that DISPATCHED Stanford on their home field and EMBARRASSED Texas Tech, a team that did get mention on ESPN yesterday as a team that “deserves to be in the Stanford regional championship game” yet FAILED again to mention their opponent and the ONLY UNDEFEATED team in the Stanford regional in HAWAII??????

This will never change ladies and gentlemen… University of Hawaii athletes will ALWAYS have to go BEYOND winning to get any coverage. Poor Kelly Majam and Jessica Iwata have been studs and NOTHING. Yee this and Yee that. YEE IS GONE! 😆

Just winning is not enough for Hawaii to get national coverage or mention.

Mediocre performances and sloppy wins in big name conferences will continue to litter the airwaves and will continue to cash in on big TV contracts because that is supposedly what people want to see right???

Who cares about a softball team that IS nationally ranked, that can hit home runs from 1-9 in the order, and that have VANQUISHED opponents on their way to meet the #1 seeded team in the country.

No one can justify this and ANY attempt to do so is 21 slaps in the face to 21 hard working student athletes that represent the people of Hawaii and their university. Any justification of all this media discrimination equates to 4 backhanded chops to 4 hard working coaches that have done their jobs and MORE.

Teams in BIG conferences have a history of winning and they get the attention and $$$$ deals, can’t help that. But how can ANYONE justify that when a team that is NOT the traditional big ones starts making noise ALL YEAR LONG, that they continue to get the shaft so that they remain unknown and continue to miss out on national exposure to increase their recruiting range, to get some mainland fans, to be attractive for future broadcasts????

All of this HELPS teams become winners. Without this, teams remain short on recognition thus remaining short on a wider range of recruiting areas, thus remaining short on talent, and missing out on $$$$ TV deals in their conference.

It’s a suffocation of revenue sharing while maintaining the status quo of the rich STAYING richer.

Kazz, i watched the 5:00 news on KHNL or whatever the combined news is called. they did talk about the Wahine and actually showed pictures too. then i watched Kanoa too. at least we getting local coverage. no worry, once we play Alabama, we’ll be on national tv and the announcers have to study our softbows. they may be shocked as to how small Kelly is and all her homeruns. also Gonzo has a lot too. and Iwata too and….. well, you get the picture. They will also be shocked that the softbows just walloped the former national record of 134. 149 and counting! we’ll take the wins over the homers though.

Up early to do laundry then off to Mililani for fun and food with family and friends. Just returned.

CONTRATS TO THE UH WAHINE FOR WINNING THE STANFORD REGIONAL AND NOW OFF TO ALABAMA!!!!!!!!

Some one posted a day or 2 ago about “funding” post-season expenses for softball and unsure if I saw a response. How much is chargeable to UH.

I still say that Benson is an idiot for sitting on his hands on expansion, but this may be the “reason” to dump him if things go wrong. He looks to add “lower tier” schools while others are looking for equal or better! Sure makes him look stupid!!!!!

I agree w/ A-Joe. I’m sure the teams who will play the Wahine will scout them, but let’s surprise them and *smack* ’em on the side of the head when we play them. It’ll be a bigger story if/when we make it to the top.

  386. jm2375 May 23, 2010 8:12 pm

  387. Ralph May 23, 2010 8:16 pm

AJoe makes a good observation, it is better for our girls to go “under the radar” and focus on winning. Less media distractions will let the girls have their fun without someone poking a notepad, calling their cellphone for an interview, having a microphone or camera shoved in front of their faces. Having fun and getting game ready will bring the best out of our Na Wahine come game time. Just win Na Wahine, everything else takes care of itself.

being that Kelly Majam is so small compared to your proto-type home run hitter, maybe when they go to Alabama, maybe they could switch identities within the team. Makani could say she’s Kelly and be interviewed. Kelly could be Grimes. Amanda could switch with J. Iwata, etc. etc. etc. they could have a team joke and suprise the heck out of the ignorant media. I’m only joking on this, but just imagine how hilarious it would be. but then, that’s just me.

  391. d1島 May 23, 2010 8:30 pm

    AlnBama?

  392. Not an Expert May 23, 2010 8:58 pm

The Wahine softball team just needs to win against Bama. If they don’t ESPN and the rest of the establishment will convey once again all the negatives they can find to put them down. (The negative spin) Imagine how much coverage a big name school would be getting if they were on a record homerun streak playing in the regional and now a super regional.

Conspiracy? None dare call it that.

If UH had money like any big school they could build an athletic dynasty here in Hawaii. Let me correct that. If UH had the right type of people with money like any big school they could build an athletic dynasty here in Hawaii.

How? By building the best facilities and maintaining & upgrading these facilities so they will continue to be the best. Hire the best name coaches with success at the highest levels. Having private jets, small ones to bring in the recruits and for small athletic teams to travel in. A larger one for the football team or any large number athletic team.

Find a way for families to view the games played by their children who live across the country. Meaning with the computer age and technology Hawaii could create a way to stream the games over the internet. (Find ways to override the control of the networks).

Bring in national media people here for a vacation for reporting about UH athletics. PR.

Can one imagine Hawaii being in the top 5 of all the different sports. Teams coming to Hawaii not having to be concerned about losing, because they are playing the best and on top of that paid millions of dollars to come and play.

Thinking outside the box and more than likely just dreaming the impossible dream.

If anyone has ideas to improve athletics at UH then they should contact JD. Outside the box, inside the box, under the rubbish can, really doesn’t matter what kind of idea it is. Unfortunately most of the out of the box ideas require money, and lots of it. Unless you are a member of a BCS conference with hordes of TV money, good out of the box ideas are difficult to come by.

Don’t let anything or anyone deter you or chink the team unity by blatheringing about this person or that person.
The Wahine are going to hit the Super as underdogs and get it done just like they did this week. Marching, marching, the Hawaii Horde. Pickin up fans, admirers and even some recruits- who knows?

    al on 409 & postmanke on 419,

I think the stars & the team are aligned for the true ‘run-n-shoot’ (in it’s purest form) to re-appear. The weak points that may impede progress are under-achievement by the O-Line & if Moniz fails to re-gain his form & doesn’t re-capture his top-gun status. All the other weaknesses in other units seem to be squared away, including the kicking game (geez, even Enos looked solid in the Spring). I say Moniz comes back strong & that Coach Shaw will have his troops ready to play. Although USC will be ready, they don’t yet realize their absolute worst nightmare is going to happen; being embarrassed on national television.

  423. protector May 24, 2010 7:03 am

    troll on 314,

Do you really think that UH will average only 1 and 1/2 touchdowns in the coming season (going by your $20 total / $1 a touchdown figure)? I’d like to make a personal wager with you but that would mean we’d reveal true identities. A number of tsaikos know my name, but if you’re afraid to reveal it here we could set up a neutral party that you trust & that I can approve of. My estimate would at least be double of yours. We can set the number at 25. At 25 we push. 24 & below, you win, 26 and above, I win. Amount wagered: negotiable. What do you say? Please decide quickly as we’re still unsure as to what form the blog will take. Of course, I doubt you’ll take up the gauntlet.

  424. protector May 24, 2010 7:12 am

    re: 424,

Sorry troll, my figures are off. The fairer above/below line would be 30. 29 or below, you win. 31 and above, I win. Ball’s in your court if you got any. I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is and believe me, with my tight financial situation it’s not a whimsical thing; I don’t have a lot of discretionary cash/mad money.

  432. labrat May 24, 2010 9:06 am

The Texas Tech coach said it all. When they looked at the Wahine lineup they couldn’t pitch around anyone. And that is how it has been for the wahine this season. If you try to pitch around one the next one will pick it up. And they all can go long.

Tough realities for scholar-athletes is attracting attention of the Feds.

The NCAA says its rules are clear. Athletic scholarships are one-year, “merit-based” awards that require both demonstrated academic performance as well as “participation expectations” on the playing field.

College sport watchdogs — and, occasionally, athletes themselves — tell a different story. They see unkept promises and bottom-line decisions at odds with the definition of student-athlete.

Those discrepancies apparently have caught the attention of the U.S. Justice Department. Its antitrust division is investigating the one-year renewable scholarship, with agents interviewing NCAA officials and member schools. A Justice Department spokeswoman declined comment because the probe, announced on May 6, is ongoing.

  435. al May 24, 2010 9:42 am

athletes themselves — tell a different story. They see unkept promises and bottom-line decisions at odds with the definition of student-athlete.

How many times have we seen a student athlete kept on scholarship an not even play due to reasons not related to sports, sure there will be a few mishaps but over all I think the schools have been pretty good in dealing with students on scholarships. There is always going to be a D. Smith!!!!

  440. d1島 May 24, 2010 10:03 am

    Pomai,

Other than the one-year sit-out rule, it seems that the NCAA is mostly relying on self-policing.

Requiring Division I transfers to sit out a year before competing for a new school prevents coaches from recruiting players away from other schools, said Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams.

Coaches who routinely “run off” players risk sullying their reputation — and losing recruits to other coaches who would point out that track record, he added.

“I don’t know many coaches who do that,” Williams said. “If you develop a reputation for doing that, you probably won’t be coaching very long.”

Kazz, don’t sweat national recognition. Na Wahine will gain from this Super Regional appearance and the one thing they can do to help themselves is to WIN!
Alabama gets the love because of the programs they run, not just softball. Na Wahine can show the rest of the country they are not a passing fancy. This Super Regional appearance is a huge step up for the program.
It was great to know that Na Wahine was not celebrating like they reached their goal. It looks like they are still focused and stilll on a mission. This is what they need. Focus, play for each other, play for themselves, play loose because each and every game they play is some of the gravy for a “record” setting year.
That Lady Buffalo coach is just one mad buffalo after being taught by Na Wahine that we do play some pretty good softball out here. Her analysis is down to earth. That being said, Alabama can be hit too and Na Wahine will put the “BIG SMACK” on them!

  444. NorthShoreFan May 24, 2010 10:36 am

    from the Lady Bufalo coach…
    On Alabama pitcher Kelsi Dunne:
“She’s a great pitcher. As soon as she gets you guessing, you are just about done. That’s what she did to us today. Yesterday when we saw her, we were guessing a little too much early in the game, but then we settled in and started taking our hacks and being aggressive. Today I thought we were taking our hacks and being aggressive, but we just were guessing a little bit more than we were yesterday.”

    So…see ball…hit ball…not much guessing?

What I find remarkable about this Wahine Softball Team is that their success so far in the postseason is that they have accomplished it all on the road. Think about it, on the road since May 10, long plane rides, long van rides, sleeping in strange surroundings in strange beds, playing in mostly unfamiliar fields, eating fast food, traveling through different time zones and thousands of miles. They don’t have the luxury of being at home through the regionals and superregionals like Washington, Alabama, etc. I truly believe they have remarkable will and resolve, both physically and especially mentally. They are playing with a purpose and they are taking us along for this glorious ride. Feel the rush!!
